Jokes aside, fallout 76 is a complete mess! And that statement is not even close to an exaggeration.
Server disconnection is a common thing, framerate dips, common bethesda bugs and glitches, enemies spawning out of the sky and you getting dropped inside a horde of enemies with no equipped weapons is just some of the things you can expect in the game.
That's just the technical side of things though and maybe bethesda will fix it, maybe...
One thing that bethesda can't fix is the empty open world, not without a massive patch that completely changes everything in the game, umm sorry did I say everything? 'massive patch that changes the game'. fallout 76 is bethesda's attempt to join the "Games as a service" movement.
Also, the engine hasn't aged well, bethesda seriously needs to develop a new engine for it's open world games.
Anyway, I can't recommend fallout 76 unless you wanna waste your $60 and question your life decisions.

This isn't a fallout game anymore than Mass Effect Andromeda was a Mass Effect game. Using the game as a skin and playing off the name doesn't make it part of the series. This is the MEA of the fallout world, and will be rated accordingly.

While there are endless opportunities to criticize the game for everything no one wanted, lets focus on one thing. NO one wants to read through endless terminals or listen to endless holotapes, in an empty environment. The same mistakes EA made with MEA, is being made all over again with Bethesda and 76. The reviews should reflect this accordingly, and so far they have. Like it or not, those happy with the game are likely in the minority of the collection.

The game is quite an abomination. Bethesda should be ashamed of themselves. Glad it was on their dollar. Their financial loss, is how we get their attention. With the significant discount in price in recent days, we should see this in the Gamestop bargin bin at $5-$10 in a month or two.

This is simply an online demo of FO 4 nothing more and, at present at least, somewhat less. That is how it should have been announced, a demo with ongoing dlc improvements. Easy really, quite acceptable the fans would have been engaged, money would still be made (in game) and time to bed in the new engine they would have bought with the enormous amounts of cash we have paid out over the years.

The world is pretty enough though graphics are starting to feel dated, it is also very large and sparsely populated (dlc anyone?), there are two largish settlements to occupy you for 2-3 hours but no more, unless your "grinding". The silliest part about quest and story lines being handed out by the deceased is....... why were they busy doing "dear diary" entries (well just about) instead of panicking or preparing or looting or rooting....... absolutely bare minimum of immersion. Pretty easy to play solo, which is just as well unless you byo friends!

Gosh, by industry standards this is so far off the mark for a AAA in all areas, right down to a 50G launch day patch.... I refer you to my opening paragraphs.

Ohh yeah one more thing, dont bother buying the physical game, the dvd is cardboard (I know right) with a download token hahahahahaha

And yeah, the game just.. well, it's Fallout stripped of essentially everything that made the games great and replaced with a structure that reeks of an identity crisis. PVP is bad, solo play is bad, even co-op is pretty broken (no shared XP and the way you work through quests as a team is very confusing). Gun mechanics and graphics are meh, which usually wouldn't matter too much but seeing as though this game pretty much gets rid of everything else it is more noticeable here. Survival elements are tedious enough to irritate people who don't want them yet not harsh or detailed enough to excite survivalist players.

I mean yes the world is "huge" but 95% of it is boring, drawn out radiant/fetch quests, not dissimilar to the Preston Garvey Minutemen missions - only this time you aren't helping anyone because everyone is dead. Is it a terrible sandbox co-op game? No, not really. Not a great one either though. But Bethesda can't expect to latch on to the Fallout title and give us such a medicore product.

Finally, yeah, the game is glitchy as hell, of course, but so are all Bethesda games so I wouldn't say that's the main takeaway from playing this.

tl;dr if you liked the old Fallouts and want something even distantly similar, I'd advise you either stay clear or wait until it's on sale But then I'm a random guy on the internet lol

After playing(or at least trying to play) solo I can confirm, it's the worst single-player open-world game I've ever purchased. I can deal with the many bugs and opening day issues the servers may have, but the lack of NPC's, dialog, graphical upgrades, game-changing decisions, settlements(all the things that take time and money to develop) and sense of achievement has left feeling like I'm not playing towards any type of goal or having any fun. Bottom line...it's not a fun single player game regardless of the fact Bethesda claims it can be. No two ways about it...I've been robbed of 60 bucks based on this claim. This game is not finished and... certainly not Fallout. It feels like some fan coded a mod to play Fallout 4 as an empty MMO. It fails terribly at single-player as there is no story. For some reason, EVERYONE recorded a holotape before they died and left it out on a table for you to find. Then you get to play a loot simulator while professional voice actors try and make the experience interesting. It's not.
There is no challenge, so multiplayer has no real point other than to run around randomly shooting respawns and looting with friends.
Nothing feels like it makes any sense and this beautifully rendered world is devoid of any immersion. This is not Fallout.
I've spawned under the world twice and I've crashed to desktop multiple times.
Always on Mics just let you hear people clicking their keyboards or hearing them argue with children or parents or spouses in their home. It's uncomfortable. I don't understand why anyone thought this would be a good idea. "Hell is other people" and why I play games like Fallout to begin with.
    This is not Fallout.
Leveling up and perks are handled in a random bizarre way and feel toothless.
Seriously feels like it should be a Free-To-Play game, but Bethesda charged a AAA price.

The graphics - The FOV is incredible small, they could of increased this slightly, i get they need all the extra FPS they need (especially for consoles) but that's kind of ridiculous.

Gaussian blur everywhere, you'd think your character requires prescription glasses or something...

VOIP - Mic is active during character creation screen... so you can hear everyone raging at the GUI while in their character creating screen. (one player was scream F&%%%$$$k while smashing his keys)

The game also uses holotapes/robots instead of human NPC's to deliver the story... and they are boring as hell, it reminds me a lot of the questing in world of warcraft back in 2006.

The micro transactions are working though.... but you'll have to farm for hours if you want a cap, or pay 5$ of real world currency.

What a mess... It's as if they handed you a hungry man meal and told you eat that in the busiest cafeteria... cold, no microwave.

Meanwhile, New Vegas was the fillet minion we all yearn for and wanted more of... (maybe with coop options)

The game is also very prone to hacking. Mods won't come unitl next year, but people can modify the. ini files of the game just like FO4, and alolws them to change stuff like lockpicking being easier and god knows what they might come up with next. A quick look at the game's anti cheat system reveals it's just a joke: https://imgur.com/eIOcWOA
Even while there's definitely a lot to explore, the fact that the game feels empty makes discovering stuff barely exciting, and reading or hearing stuff is just tedious as it makes just want to finish already, after all the mission objective updates itself. You no longer discover stuff that can affect the people around you, all because they are already dead, and all you have to do is launching nukes and boom, that's all.
If you honestly want an online game where exploring is better, you can play minecraft instead. I know it might sound as a joke but the game is actually fun, and has a great replayability.

If you are playing with a friend or two then Fallout 76 is "just fine" but alone is just pure garbage. There's no story, no NPS's, nothing. You just listen the holotapes and travel from A to B while killing a few robots, mutants or ghouls... Even base managing is a straight ripoff from Fallout 4.

It's just hard to understand that this game is made by Bethesda who also made Elder Scrolls Online.

I continue now with Fallout 76 with 3 friends and my god, this game has a lot of things to patch, the graphism did not evolove a bit in 3 years and the performance are terrific.

First of all, the numbers of bugs and quests that are blocked because of them are quite large, I am not even talking about the events which are 1 times on 3 event, not possible to finish.

The narative is not very interesting as we can't refer ourself to any character as there is none, the notes and holoband are an horror to read or listen to.

The garaphical bugs are everywhere some animations does not launch properly, shadows are all black or none existent. The graphics are still really rough and can't be considered as a style of the studio. When graphism are bad we have to say it.

Lot of mechanics are not good at all, as a french player the controls for base construction and overall gameplay are not really good, I have to find workaround to move in construction mode and I cannot move when I am lauching a grenade because the studio did not think of the shortcuts of nvidia.

Also there was a lot of fps drop during my playtime going to 20 fps and going back to 60, 2 second after.

To conclude, I think the game is not bad at all for the price, you can have fun on it. But it really need a lot of fix and the engine need a lot of work for the next games.

Absolute disappointment of a **** game. A world devoid of anything compelling. A badly coded mess that is open to multi-player cheating and opens you up for hacking.

Avoid this piece like the plague. Consider all reasons why you loved playing Fallout in the past like me any many other fans. Now, take out all these positive aspects and you get Fallout 76.

Cannot say the same about Fallout 76... No NPC's, awful retcons that only exist for brand recognition rather than elaborate world building, beautiful yet empty world, every bit of lore is presented via holotapes, robots or terminals, essentially denying any chance for emotional connection to be created.
Every location is empty simply because LITERALLY everything to do with that location is a fragment of the past (3 lore conveyors mentioned earlier).
Now lets get to the gameplay.
Game is pathetically easy, you can start exploring everything at low levels and have no troubles against enemies 3-4 times your level, simply move back and shoot, but don't be disappointed when you can't use the loot you get, because items are LEVEL based.
My biggest issue with the game is that it has no point, it is literally No Mans Sky.
You get out of the vault, do fetch quests, listen to 5 minute long holotapes, kill terrible AI, explore a very empty world, build a base because its a feature, not because its rewarding in any way and just look at the most beautiful location a Fallout game is set in and just wonder how Bethesda could make it worse than Fallout 4.
Did I mention that the most polished feature in the game is the microtransaction store? Let that sink in.

After all, if you don't have real NPCs, you don't need to worry about endeavouring to write decent dialogue.

I truly hope the overall response to FO 76 proves to be the wakeup call that Bethesda so desperately needs. With Fallout 76, they have truly completed their fall from grace, and they need to understand that.

Finally, I can't help but wonder... If 76 fails to achieve an 85% score here on Metacritic, I wonder if Bethesda will deny themselves royalties.... (I'm sure many remember how Beth screwed over Obsidian over New Vegas in this way)

If a game isn't going to have a story, it needs to have a compelling world and environment. If it isn't going to have a compelling world and environment, it needs to have a great story. There is no story in Fallout 76, and the limitation on building structures (and the only permanent structures are those near your CAMP deployment [UPDATE: even those structures will randomly disappear without warning, it turns out]), makes building a futile waste of time. You're better off investing time into Fallout 4 settlements. Adding to this frustration is litany of poor design choices and bugs - no push to talk, no engine update (setting is in West Virginia but you can't climb up ledges when jumping at them - even DOOM lets you do this), its a social game that limits your party to four, the graphics are mediocre for the era, server crashes aren't uncommon. I really want to say something positive about the game because I love the Fallout franchise, but this honestly feels like discovering while you still care about your significant other, they've given up on the relationship.

This game lacks story, it lacks environment, and it comes with an unruly bucket of bugs from an outdated engine that needed to be put out to pasture after Skyrim. After the first day of playing it the only motivation I had for keeping at it was to see if it ever got compelling in its own right besides having Fallout in the title. It doesn't. This is the kind of work I'd expect, and be excited for, if it came from community modders, for free. This is not a AAA title release. Save your money for then it's 10 dollars.

This is a Vault-Tec style social experiment at total deprivation of satisfaction.

Yes, it has a huge map and crafting is back with more options and the gameplay loop is still passable as "somewhat fun", but we've lost NPCs, engaging story quests, most of the narrative, not to mention the trainwreck that's the SPECIAL system right now and at the end of the day, this game is a huge sandbox that, in all its vastness, ultimately feels empty. Bethesda has removed a lot of things compared to FO4, but forgot that if you take away from the game, you're supposed to put something in instead.

Additionally, we still have the same friggin problems we had with FO4, but this time, modders won't be able to fix these for at least a year. No FOV slider, FPS lock on PC, weird glitches, objects and enemies stuck in the terrain, MY CHARACTER stuck in the terrain, missin push-to-talk option, disappearing and t-posing enemies... the list just goes on and on... Hell there are even bugs that Bethesda supposedly "fixed" during the beta, but here they are in the final release.

Microtransactions are the final nail for me. Yes, you can earn everything by playing but just the existence of MTX in this game makes my blood boil. It makes it seem like this game went for profits and profits only. At least the cash shop works perfectly, am I right boys? It just adds insult to injury.

Bethesda really needs to get its crap together if they want me to put money down for their products ever again.

The story is limited to notes and recordings in a medium that's "Let the player do" instead of "Tell them what happen", normally that kind of story telling is an optional addition to the games experience.

Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 both have lore that goes against established cannon, retconning those previous games is disrespectful to the writers and developers of past games.

The PC edition launched without a number options typically found in sixty dollar triple A titles. From the options menu you cannot, turn off depth of field, bloom, god rays, bloom, change the Anti Aliasing settings, or set an ultra wide screen resolution. The strange thing is the game does support all those settings if you change them from the configuration files. However the normal user would have a difficult time figuring out how to go about that process. Bethesda omitted those options from the game for seemingly no reason.

After exploring the map, the size of which is one of the games few positives, the gameplay would consist of mostly building your camp and controlling public workshops. The building mode in the game while aggravating at times does work and is improved slightly from Fallout 4.

Other players from my experience will have voice chat turned off and will ignore you after a wave. After twenty hours of leaving my microphone on in hopes that I would make a lasting connection with someone I decided to turn it off so I could listen to an audio book without having to worry about others at all.

All of the good things in Fallout 76 can be better found in Fallout 4, and basically this game is Fallout 4 striped of it's substantial story elements and combined with the restrictions of a multiplayer game.

This game is awful, but lets start with the basics:
-The game is buggy as hell, we might have let it go in the past but this time Bethesda needs to pay the piper, the engines has bugs that were in Fallout 4!
-Optimization is obscene, imagine FO4 Boston but its everywhere -The enemy variety is poor despite the fact there is a lot of enemy types, get used to seeing scorched repeatedly

-Optimization is obscene, imagine FO4 Boston but its everywhere
-The enemy variety is poor despite the fact there is a lot of enemy types, get used to seeing scorched repeatedly because there are no raiders
-The quests are dumb, who thought it was a good thing to do quests for dead people? Imagine if you played Fallout 1 and you were fetching a water chip for your dead vault, thats every quest in this game
-The gameplay is still clunky, animations don't play properly or smooth enough
-Enemies are too hard (by "hard" I mean spongy) or too easy, there is no inbetween
-The texture work is terrible, outside maybe the exterior lighting the game looks terrible and the interior lighting makes me want to puke
-Lore retcons up the eyeballs, seriously nothing makes sense anymore its all just to keep the illusion its still fallout
-The microtransaction store filled with crap, nuff said
-The game is empty and not in a good way, the servers only hold around 20 players, thats not enough for a map thats apparently "4 times the size of Fallout 4"
-No Push to talk, so listen to screeching kiddies
-No FOV slider, for people like me it makes me feel literally sick
-Physics are STILL tied to fps, Bethesda...why?
-The inventory limit is waaaaay too low to be enjoyable, but then again Bethesda maybe should make their game an actual survival game than adding stuff all over the place!
-The perk cards seem like an interesting idea, just waiting for them to be monetized, gg for killing skills, which is actually a very simplistic system, this is just condescending and insulting.
-Re-use of assets, I **** you not the final end-game boss is a reskinned dragon, even the behavior is the same where they circle around like retards then land
-No NPCs, in a fallout game this is despicable, I could MAYBE buy it if there wasn't any hints of life but there is literally signs of recent life all over the place with notes and holotapes and fresh dead bodies, why can't bethesda commit to being an actual post apocalypse?
-The settlement building limit is too low and even storing stuff counts towards the limit, this is so dumb in an age where INDIE survival games are allowing people to do whatever without limit, if this is an engine issue, GET. A. NEW. ENGINE!
-The voice acting that is there is boring, you listen to stuff like the overseers past life as a farmer...NOBODY CARES! EXPOSITION! And because everyone is dead in this game she likely is too, so why should I care?
-The UI is disgusting, other than the favourite menu they have improved NOTHING, no sub menus, tags, nada, the settlement building UI is also atrocious, pray to god you don't rebind your keys or well...just try it, I dare you.
-The game is trying to appeal to everyone and appeals to nobody as a result, even the survival elements are tame outside of maybe radiation
-"Dedicated servers" might as well be a joke in the AAA games industry, i've had a more stable experience with Multiplayer mods for MORROWIND

    Lets talk about the positives:
-The settlement system is okay I guess, if you ignore the limits and bugs, its cool coming across other peoples camps and you can also utilise theirs, so there is kind of a purpose.
-Gameplay loop is addicting even if it is mindless, there is something about picking up a toothbrush and being able to scrap it
    -Playing with friends
-Locations are somewhat varied, somebody tried but its not enough to recognise with how ugly everything is, I feel bad for the concept artists
-Power armour is awesome again, its now that rare thing you want to achieve, shamefully its heavy as hell so it will take a large chunk of your inventory space
-The character creator has improved a tad bit, adding some options and the hair colors actually look like hair and not plastic, but even so modders have added far more to Fallout 4 already, Bethesda are outplayed here

I would only EVER recommend this game when private servers and mods become a thing, but honestly we've let Bethesda away with too much, I hope mod authors let this game rot, they deserve better, we deserve better. And this $60 full priced crap needs to go, its ripping us off in reality and then they have the gall to ask us for more? No, I'm done. The AAA industry is a joke if this is the standard we hold for full priced games.

Combat is taken from Fallout 4 and made worse, most egregiously in the form of neutering VATS. VATS used to be the cornerstone of several incredible builds, from the crit-based pistoleer to the sneaky Blitz-based melee type, teleporting from mob to mob without exposing yourself to undue danger.

Aside from removing playstyles and dumbing down combat, all storytelling has been reduced to audiologs. There are so many audiologs, you'll frequently get the next one before the previous one has even finished. It's the epitome of lazy writing. And, if you actually force yourself to suffer through the main story, you'll find that it never gets better.

So what do you actually *do* in Fallout 76? Walk around and collect herbs, mostly. You have to be constantly gathering because meats, vegetables and herbs spoil over time, so if you intend to use them for crafting or cooking, you need fresh ingredients. This boils the gameplay down to a really slow walk through the fields, quite literally picking flowers. One of the best/most reliable healing items can be crafted with two types of flowers and water... but one of those flowers only grows near streams and rivers. Guess what the map has very few of? You guessed it; streams and rivers. You're gonna get really familiar with the small handful of farming spots for specific pieces of loot.

Disappointing game, all things considered. It is more fun if you bring friends along, but that's not praise; it's condemnation. The game is a boring, mindless, tedious, grindy slog if you're trying to play solo.

    1/10 would not recommend.

Just a very lazy rehashing of previous IP to make a fast buck. Fallout 4 was pretty bad and this is just Bethesda cashing out on the last of the value this game has. This franchise had it's glory days and it's over.

There is no reason why this game should exist; Fallout 76 is a watered-down version of an already watered-down Fallout 4. Simple, finicky, glitchy, empty, and a waste of time. Thumbs down.

Just don't touch this game. There's next to no content, VATS and SPECIAL are so streamlined now that they don't feel like they add anything to the game. Building and Crafting is so heavily simplified and is so poorly implemented, and on PC if you don't have WASD bound to your movement keys while in a build menu, you get stuck until you rebind them back. Enemies are pushovers and Death has no meaning other than losing your junk and wasting time. There is a Microtransaction shop that is utterly worthless, with simple cosmetic items costing $5+ and it takes a very long time to earn atoms in-game. Framerate is locked to 63 FPS and your FOV is locked at the console default 70 with no way to change it. Autosaves take forever and the servers crash so often that you can actually lose progress because of the long interval between autosaves. PvP is useless and only serves to waste time or troll people, as the attacker gains nothing most of the time since their damage is limited, and the defender can chem up and equip their best gear just to slaughter the attacker. With the massive amount of bugs and the fact this just feels like a Multiplayer mod, there is 0 reason to get this game unless it goes for less than $5 USD. This only gets a 1 because of the gunplay. I'm registering my account here just to say the same as already said by hundreds. If you are a fan of Fallout 1, 2, 3 (NV), even the 4th... Don't buy. You will be sad, you will be disappointed.
Such a waste... Not my money.. What they did with Fallout.

Bethesda. You promised us that war never changes. Well, it did change. It became a laggy and boring experience. Huge, empty sandbox without any meaningful content. This isn't the Fallout we want.

Bathesda is clearly milking this game so they can have enough budget for fallout 5. DON'T BUY THIS GAME.

Edit: and enough with this "everyone have their own opinion" bs, there is a clear difference between "opinions" and facts, the fact that Bethesda made a half made, bug rendered game is just pathetic, it is getting old that people are still super defensive towards Bethesda and their "quality games" after all these years with little to no change. And in the counter of "I enjoy this game with my friends" statement, well no **** **** you dip****, anything can be fun with friends, even watching Boku no Pico is fun with friends, but should anyone watch a child gay porn just because "it is fun with friends"?? Hell nah. Bethesda stripped everything good out of the fallout franchise and expected people to like it, well that 80% sale drop is the direct **** you" response to Bethesda from fans, and I am glad that a big company finally gets punished by their ****ty actions

    There is no NPC.
    There is no story.
    There is no Fallout universe.
    There is no survival feeling.
This not Fallout. It looks fake.

Laggy glitchy unfinished no content mess. This is not worth 60 dollars.....it is barely worth 20! If this "game" was on nexus mods it wouldn't even be one of the best ones.

    Great idea, terrible execution.
This is what many people has asked for sadly it took yet another step away from the roots. removing the life from the game.

And ofc the endless amount of bugs and issues this game has had/has.

It feels like Fallout, including all the bugs the old fallouts had, except you have no pause menu, and now you have microtransactions. Also the game runs terrible, locked FOV and Framerate. No support for 2560x1080 monitors, which is pretty common resolution now. Wait for the patches or skip it.

this game completely exposes the fact that bethesda games have and will continue to be carried by modders. 76 will likely eventually become a good game due to fans creating mod servers. but right now this game is a lackluster buggy mess. do not waste your money on this right now. buy the game when it goes on sale later in its life it will have a great selection of mods then.

SO MANY BUGS. They will probably patch them, but it was obvious this was rushed out. Like reallly rushed out. Also, the game does not even attempt to show you what areas are fitting for your level or how many people you should have for the big boss raids. Oh! And the raids are just particle spam crap. Yeah. This is trash. Even the visuals seem to be on like a late PS2 era level. Nothing of value here. Only reason I am not giving it a zero is it at least runs...most of the time. Still cashes a lot though too. Terrible and I called it. I knew it would be terrible, but I had no idea it would be this trash. DO NOT BUY! Expand

From the very first second of playing, I was greeted with the sound of a man deeply taking drags on a vape and commentating his every thought while I used the horribly clunky face customizer as fast as I could so that I could reach a menu where I could mute the player.

Shortly after, a Brahman spawned on me inside a bathroom, trapping me. This is the experience of Fallout 76.

This is the experience of Fallout 76. Obnoxious other players who are there occasionally, and when they aren't you still suffer by losing out on NPCs, VATs, being able to pause the game and just generally everything that makes Fallout a good game.

I do not think I have ever been so disappointed in a "AAA" release.

On top of this, when I went to pick up my physical copy from GameStop (which was ordered 5 months ago) the disk was made of cardboard and had a code stamped on it for download. Now I want to return the game but GameStop "doesn't accept returns on digital purchases," one of the reasons I ordered a physical copy in the first place.

Just a colossal failure on the part of both Bethesda and GameStop.

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
