So this is the point of view from a casual player looking to play single player. None of the complaints about balancing, nerfs or the endgame complaints from someone looking to sink 500+ hours in a game.

I approached this game expecting an uninspired but solid game that I could complete the campaign and move on. I have a backlog of games to play and I don't need to play something
So this is the point of view from a casual player looking to play single player. None of the complaints about balancing, nerfs or the endgame complaints from someone looking to sink 500+ hours in a game.

I approached this game expecting an uninspired but solid game that I could complete the campaign and move on. I have a backlog of games to play and I don't need to play something forever. Sadly despite my bar being set really low I was disappointed.

-Gameplay feels lacking with very few builds or diversity.

-For gear yellow rare items can be as good as legendary which is bad in that legendary items can and often do roll lower than yellows. You can transfer traits but that requires large amount of resources and you can only transfer once. for something you will replace in a couple levels it sucks. Many of the skills are super specific to just one build making most legendary items completely useless.

-Rubberbanding/sliding constantly. Sometimes during lag spikes which I believe are mostly server based. Not a new issue since diablo 3 also had online always but still sucks.

-collision with my own units making movement awkward(played necromancer) would sometimes need to move around to get minions to randomly move out of the way of object i wanted to interact with

-open world is fine if it adds to the immersion or exploration but it felt more like the open space was an obstacle to getting into more fights. ignoring 3-5 mobs not worth dismounting became the norm and I just ran from quest to quest with my horse when it was unlocked.

-The story was kind of so-so but it didn't really complete and left it super open ended to try to draw you back for more. If it is only added to seasonal I likely will not pick up the game again since leveling is a chore and the main campaign was long but not super enjoyable.

The overall end result is a game I wanted to play just to complete and didn't really enjoy. I ended up completing it only because I had the mentality of "I paid for this so I may as well finish". I was extremely tempted to drop difficulty part way through campaign not because it was hard but because I wanted to be done sooner. By the time I unlocked Torment and completed campaign I was done with diablo 4 and did not want to touch endgame or try getting unique gear. I regret my purchase and do not recommend unless you want to burn time and money and have nothing better to do.

A game released unfinished missing ALL the quality of life and good things fought hard for in Diablo 3, just to get its first actual season with a patch that nerfs EVERYTHING (no joke everything into the ground) instead of fixing anything they restsricted the game play and what little "end game" there was to nothing. These people have NO idea what they are doing

I have never seen a studio that hates their players as much as Blizzard. This is the first time that I uninstalled a game due to completely absurd patch notes. It is so outlandish, so out of touch that it is honestly just comical at this point.

They do not want you to play their game. They only want you to buy it.

Campaign is boring, but the two main cinematics are epic. Quality ends there. The game is full of bugs, is slow to progress through and is unbalanced. There's exploits and cheesey strategies that have been discovered by a few and shared online with others. This led to Blizzard making wild adjustments to the game that made it miserable for the average player.

If and after you do spend all this time grinding - far more than what's reasonable, especially if you want to try other classes...you're rewarded with a fun end game loop? Nope. More grinding for gear that has perfect rolls and the right combo of affixes. This isn't unlike any other game like this, but it's much slower.

Unique items in the game? Nope. They're pointless and don't drop often or you get the really useless ones a bunch of times.

Re-rolling gear affixes? You may find out you get offered the same one but with a lower roll. Or you may get to choose from the same affix twice (wasted enchant).

It's just an epic waste of time really. For no reward. You get nothing for all the time invested. They didn't finish their end game content. You can stop playing after level 80 or so.

Such a wasted opportunity. They had momentum too. They threw it all away. Well, maybe they can fix it. Check back in a few months or a year.

ActivisionBlizzard just made everything harder and worse with their pre-season 1 patch. This has been one of the best Diablo’s I had ever played, and then they did this.

I’m now telling my friends who have not yet bought the game, who I had been telling to buy it, to not bother. Better games on the horizon. Actiblizz are the worst gaming company ever.

It was fun for a very brief moment but now it’s a mess with a pointless season and an aimless direction other than to stretch as much out of the content as possible. Here we go again with the same thing in Diablo 4... The leveling grind in an absolutely bonkers grind. If you are just playing casually, good luck reaching max level anytime in the next couple months. The balance of the game is an absolute joke. You have tons of ridiculous damage stipulations, damage from far away, damage when close, vulnerable damage, crowd control damage, overpower damage, lucky hits, crit chance, crit dam, pyromancy damage, flame damage, damage over time, flame damage over time etc... so building your character is incredibly challenging and if you use your brain trying to figure it out to maximize your build strength you get totally overwhelmed by all the mind numbing gear you get! Just follow some build online! Make it easy for yourself. By the way, all that gear you get which most of is NOT an upgrade will have you wearing the same stuff for 15+ levels... especially if you are one of the unfortunate souls to get stuck in WT2 and actually enjoy exploring, doing dungeons, taking your time, because if you do not rush the main quest you will eventually be so over leveled that you will stop getting any gear upgrades dropping! Next the balance updates/patch notes. If you want to ever truly understand how out of touch the devs are for this game just follow them... im not going into detail, just take a couple minutes during your lunch break and actually read what they post for balancing this game. After you do so and shake your head thinking "wtf did I just read" you will soon understand that the devs do not know wtf they are doing! Go watch youtube videos of people who do know the game like the back of their hand so they can break it down for you. Bless any of you playing sorcerer. Its a fun class... but holy is it bad! Massive mana issues, pigeonholed into using 3 to 4 (out of 5) defensive skills (flame shield, ice armor, teleport, frost nova)... low damage for anything outside of ice shards... love fire but holy cow are most of the pyro skills bad( low dps) I could go on and on... im finally about to complete the main quest and leave hell (WT2) after beating the cap stone dungeon... hopefully. Who knows. Im so over leveled (lvl 57 currently) that I have no idea how good my build really is. Guess ill find out soon hopefully. I played how I wanted to play... how i do other open world games and feels I have payed for it. There is a side note though and ill try to be positive about something(s). I have enjoyed the story/main quest line, when I have gotten around to it. Lorath and Donan are stand out characters. I have not beaten it yet so there is a chance stuff can fly off the rails, but going into act 6 I can say its one thing I have really liked. Also despite how bad it might be (its hard to tell now being so overleveled) from a meta point... i do like my firewall sorc... i like being a pyro maniac... and there lies the most painful part of this game.. things you can truly like and enjoy... bogged down by awful, out of touch devs. Take care everyone, and if you are the one person who ever actually reads this whole review, I hope you have a good day. The game is terrible, Microtransactions. Terrible gameplay loop. You reach a point where you continuously ask yourself why you are playing the game... there is no point. I've sunk a lot more than 20 hours into the game, but it was really only that first 20 that were fun. I waited until the first season patch to write a review, hoping they would listen to the community and make improvements, perhaps even adding features to make the game more fun. Sadly, the exact opposite has occurred. They have slowed down experience, made characters far easier to kill, taken any fun abilities and made them less effective while not buffing or even fixing skills that are broken or useless. It's almost as if the people making these changes don't even play their own game. Expand

But, considering the goal is a seasonal model and the monetization reflects that, I can't give it higher than a 2/10. Everything outside the campaign is unfinished and at least a year or two away from decent. All the issues have been talked to death, but I will say that there are soooo many dev decisions

The game on release was acceptable, if not great. Then the devs actively made every single aspect of the game slower or more tedious for no apparent reason other than to artificially slow down progress.

At this point, Blizzard does not make games for fun. They make vile sociological experiments designed to extract a finely-tuned amount of time and money from the consumer. Come back

The reason it gets a 2 rather than a 0/1 is because it is a game, there's no denying that. It just really sucks.

Whoever thought that repeating NM dungeons from level 45 to 100 was a good idea (what is that like ~70-100 hours of gameplay?) was foreseeably wrong.

If it took 30 hours to level a character from 0 to 100, then I would play. But as long as they continue to burn players time so that they can point to a graph of playtime and feel good about themselves I will not be reinstalling.

I liked that the beginning felt difficult and managing resources and potions felt important. Towards the end game, you pretty much one shot everything and it's annoying to wait for skills to come off cool down.

The balance feels very off to the point that everyone is running one or two builds per class. And for most classes can only deal damage with core skills, meaning there are only 4 possible skills to build your character around. All other skills are just there for unstoppable or support. Between having to use 1/4 skills to deal damage and the powers on items being either insanely overpowered or useless, your character does not feel unique or customizable. I think the paragon board starts to bring out uniqueness, but it doesn't offer enough power to make a build feasible. It's mostly just there to empower one of the two builds you can choose from. Not to mention how slow it feels to traverse the board, and it's the last thing you get to and it takes a good amount of grinding to finish. This almost feels like it should be the early access, and they need to listen to the community and make some major changes. I'd really like to be able to build a character around any skill, not just the core skills, and still have it be viable. Monsters and bosses aren't challenging and have few mechanics. Starting a new character, there is no content from levels 1-50, and after you only have dungeons and helltides. It's not challenging or fun enough to make me want to continue playing the game. This game feels like it could have potential, but with frequent bugs, crashes, and not much to do it doesn't feel like a finished game.

    Pros
Very cool cosmetics and a beautiful world
    Feels good to play
No pay to win/ pay for power

    Cons
Unbalanced in that some builds are not viable while others are broken with very little overlap
Progression feels very slow, I like having the power tied to the character - but powering up a new character is so time consuming and boring I'm not really trying other classes
Monsters and bosses do not have mechanics that make them fun to fight
Crowd control is basically the only thing you need to be afraid of, and you can get around it with unstoppable
Content feels very lacking and repetitive

You can be a lvl 49 anything and still get your butt kicked. You should be able to go back to the beginning and kick those demons butt not still get your butt kicked. And every boss is extremely difficult. Every boss can just kill you by looking at you. And you can't really proceed unless you have the perfect gear and you won't get the best gear because of the minimal loot drops. And with every boss fight you have to fight the boss while running around. It's like you're in training for a track team because all you do during a boss fight is run. Sometimes you stop and fire at them from time to time but most of the fight all you do is run around. I'm almost at lvl 50 and I can't kill anything and I'm also not even close to finishing the game. The game doesn't feel fun at all. It feels like a constant grind. The thing with D3 was, at some point you become so strong you can just destroy monsters. And that was fun. While in D4, you're just running from everything hoping to get a lucky hit in. No matter how much I change my skill tree, my Necro can't kill anything unless he runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. Monsters should have a cap. They shouldn't just be able to lvl along with you. It seems like, the lower you are, the better chance you have to kill the monsters and the higher you are, the more difficult it is to kill them. I am on the brink of not playing this game anymore. I hate Diablo 4. Expand

Music: Whatever, hardly ever paid any attention to it. The only one that stuck in my head is the theme for the main hub of fractured peaks.

Skills: BOOORING. It's D3 skill table without runes. You have slightly more freedom during leveling, but as soon as you hit max points, it starts to show how unintuitive and useless it is.

Paragon board: you have nods, common, magic, rare, legendary and sockets for glyphs.
Forget legendary nods. They are pretty useless. Focus on common nods giving you stats like in diablo 3. Pick all the matching stats for the glyph around it for maximum benefit. That is so exciting right? Especially when you realize how expensive and painful it is to refund each point 1 by 1.

Items: Itemization is a joke, bloated with useless affixes, useless uniques, legendaries are just rares with an extra affixes. Rerolling items is a major pain in the a**. Multi-tier system. Sacred-Ancestor. It's worthless, it's a bad joke, it's bad design. When you play at lvl100, and sacred items start raining for you. Free gold I guess, same as when uniques drop. Few 100k gold or don't even pick it up, because apparently ancestor rare items have better potentials and values.

    UI: Console Trash.

There's so much to talk about, but I just don't care. This game doesn't deserve more effort from me. It managed to make some cash so good for blizzard. S1 will be a blast, low latency due to the absence of the majority of people who read the v1.1 patch log.

I hope my review will deter some customers from making the same mistake I made, wasting money on a product that isn't even loved by the same people who are developing it.

Patch 1.1.0A ended the game for me and for many others. They really need to play their own game before making such drastic (poor) changes. So many features/QOL/pain points they have not bothered addressing, yet take quick action if there were an exploit/bug which gets hotfixed within an hour. They took a good game that has so much potential and continue to keep ruining it.

Blizzard deploys nonsensical patches that break the underlying mechanics of the game and in doing so ensures that it has no long-term playability. The patch today was a steaming pile. I think most people would agree with that. Nerfs across the board never sit well with gamers, especially in ARPG's. But I don't think they understand how "on the fence" most people already were.

As more and more people reached the end game and realized how truly lacking in depth this game really is, the tone amongst Reddit, Twitter, Discord, and Forums started to shift. That was two weeks ago.

The fact is, people are getting bored. This is an ACTION RPG with slow-paced action. It's a LOOT hunter with boring loot. This is an MMO with no social aspects. A dungeon crawler that feels more like a game of fetching the stones and putting them on the pedestals.

The cracks are starting to show in the end game, and people feel like we're playing a paid Beta, you decide now is the time to drop a patch that **** on every build. What better way to push everyone over the edge than to nerf everything?

    Damage? NERF
    Defense? NERF
    Cooldown? NERF
    XP? NERF
    Power Leveling? NERF
    Helltide? NERF

Sure, some builds needed to be fixed, but you didn't have to completely gut entire classes while you were at it. But the nerfs are not even the point of this post. I don't even care about them. I'll adapt and overcome, I'm not afraid of a challenge. But this patch made me really think, why play season 1 at all? You didn't address a single one of the NUMEROUS valid complaints about this game.

6 new uniques? If you think adding 6 new unique items for every 3 month season is an acceptable pace to bring some depth to the sorely lacking itemization in this game, I might as well not play until season 30.

No leaderboards? No in-game trading with an option for self-found mode? No paragon board reset? No Occultist changes? (Cost or listing possible outcomes) No group finder? No stash tabs?

Nothing, in fact. Not a single thing to shine a bit of light on this **** sandwich. You made the game slower. Mobs take longer to kill, and yield less xp, and we're now gated to lower world tiers until the "recommended" (now mandatory) levels of 50 for WT3 and 70 for WT4.

So on Thursday, we're expected to start over, but this time it's all slower, less fun, time & experience gated. And all to get to the end and realize what an unfinished and lacking game this really is. Again. Still.

Maybe if you spend less time trying to "balance" a SINGLE PLAYER PVE GAME WHERE NOBODY CARES ABOUT BALANCE, and more time adding things that are actually fun and immersive, you might sell more battle passes and cosmetics.

    What an absolute joke.
