The game is god awful for the price. I won't drone on with all the same complaints others have had but they're right. Also this Reddit post gets it right. But look at all the Blizzard teat sucklers in there refusing to come to terms with how bad the game is. I downvoted this because blizzard seems intent on making getting to endgame the most horrible slog in history, actively hunting down legit tactics on youtube to nerf them the very next day.
This wouldn't be a problem if the other content wasn't so stale

Zero from me dawg, just to prove a point game looks nice, but season 1 just sucks so much ass cuz you have to create a whole new character just to get the new content.

Hate that the developers nerf dungeons to the ground. What about those who already benefited before it was nerfed? What about the casual players who dont have time to no life the game? Whoever directed the game was either depressed or missing in action. The game is now completely out of touch with the spirit of the Diablo franchise. I’m not sure if it can be fixed, they most likely missed the mark by so much that fans are already moving to other games. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, RIP Diablo. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. for context: I've over 6000 hours of time spent across various ARPGs including but not limited to:
D1, D2, D3, POE (since 2011), Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, Last Epoch, Wolcen..

    tl;dr
fans of good ARPG fans stay the hell away from this game for another 12-36 months, at its current pace of development (including the time since closed beta) the game needs multiple multiple years worth of development and getting reality checked by what ARPG enthusiasts want in terms of gameplay and game systems to be able enjoy it past a casual 30-60 hours

so far Activision King Blizzard has had:
20 years of experience & time to develop modern ARPGs
over 10 years of good examples like POE, Grim Dawn, Last Epoch etc. to draw inspiration from for game systems, customization, skill diversity, balancing, crafting systems, endgame systems
Billions of dollars earned by their CEO, carried on the backs of hard-working employees

and what did they deliver to you for an up to 3-digit € price tag?

    PROs:
    - 9/10 early game experience & campaign - ideal for your average casual dad gamer videogame "critic" to play through for 20-30 hours and come to the conclusion that "this game is a 90/100!!! so good!!" - mission accomplished
    - 9/10 visuals, never outstanding for an ARPG, art design is spot on, although the druid could have a more fitting fantasy "Ideal body" character look.
    - 8/10 audio, snappy and impactful sound design, skills feel weighty because of it, environment sounds are gear
    - 8/10 world & lore - despite being mostly not the old blizzard team anymore, it's still the Diablo universe with lots of references and very good world building
    - 5/10 soundtrack, honestly quite on the fence here
    - 5/10 potential - a solid mechanics engine foundation to build upon - hopefully this time it won't take 10 years like with D3 to make a playable ARPG that people enjoy coming back to every season for 40-100 hours
    - 5/10 pricing - pricey cash shop in a p2p game for 60-100€ in Europe - still fairly reasonable considering the many hours of gameplay you'll have over many seasons - but Bobby needs a new yacht for sure

    CONs:
    - 3/10 core class design - generator+spender patterns could work, but not if you need to use 3-5 generator attacks, for a spender that barely does 3-4x the damage of the generator, fails to kill elite monsters in one hit, and has a TINY aoe
why would you only have 6 ability slots? (see the UI design & input (click to select rather than hold), 10 total combat button keybinds, lack of choice and depth in talents)..
    - 2/10 endgame - if you're expercing over 50 hours of gameplay past the campaign, sorry, the game is far from that (playing just 1 class)
    - 1/10 honesty - lying in interviews about "more uniques and legenadries existing that players haven't seen before"
    - 3/10 progression & lvl scaling - leveling up makes you weaker past unlocking ilvl 725-815 item drops (which is around the level 45-60 mark)
the way the armor formula works has to be a joke, as you cannot upgrade your gear past a certain stage, while paragon points provide laughable "bonuses" of 5 attribute points on average, and rarely more than 5% damage (onto a pool of already 200-400% increases of the same kind, effectively 0.5-2%)
as you level up you tend to lose 5% mitigation, 5% damage and re-gain 1-2% damage/mitigation at best, making you not only slower to kill level-scaled enemies but also squishier
    - 1/10 "balance" - rather than buffing underused skills the devs will eventually nerf your build if it's remotely smooth to play, you will get caught in the crossfire of disabled uniques/legendary powers that were deemed exploitable -> losing 30-60% damage in the process and wonder why you got WEAKER over night as the devs try to frantically fix bugs while disabling core gameplay mechanics & ways to scale builds (affecting every player, instead of detecting the few exploiters with proper logging)

(IMO) what makes ARPGs "worth playing" - satisfying, interesting or straight up addictive:
-sense of progression = something to CHASE (levels, items, collectibles, unlocks, permanent power, etc)
-rewards for smart decisions (crafting, build making, farming routes)
-a well thought-out coherent game system "that makes sense", with reasonable combinations of gear/talents/abilities to optimize a character
-the ultimate POWER as a reward- achieving a "maxed out" build MUST be very rewarding and result in an extremely smooth, effortless and (borderline) overpowered performance after starting out weak & clunky - this is the main reward for your combined time, effort, thought and trial&error
-OPTIONS - all item/level/currency acquisition boils down to the same low level concept of "gaining options to change something" - be it the way your current character plays, the numerical/mechanical scaling leading to different potential for your build, or entirely new builds enabled by "the thing you JUST got that FINALLY allows you to do X..

Even with better graphics the game does not even get close to offering you the same immersion and feeling that D2 used to have (as it was proposed). They just made D4 less flashy and more gory compared

Boring, All the gear modifiers are the same, All the rings/amulets are the same. But it doesn't matter that all the gear is the same, because the enemies all scale to whatever level you are, so you will always pretty much do the same damage.

If this game was to be rated by itself, on it's own merit, outside of the name of this franchise, or the studio behind it, it would be a 6/10. Mediocre, but scratches the arpg itch for a week or two and that's it. Unfortunately, there is a whole lot of parasites and baggage attached to it, that makes me hesitate to even give it a 3/10.

Mediocre, but scratches the arpg itch for a week or two and that's it. Unfortunately, there is a whole lot of parasites and baggage attached to it, that makes me hesitate to even give it a 3/10.

I will start with the company behind it. It's not the Blizzard that made Diablo 2, it's not the Blizzard that made WoW, one of the most impactful accomplishments in gaming history. No, it's a parasite that uses the name and goodwill of mislead "fans" that still support it to push for things, that I don't think belong in an escapist entertainment. I will attach the marketing to this as well, most of it was just brutally unfunny, but using Megan Fox in marketing is not just stupid, (no I have nothing aginst hot women that's not the point) but disturbing and downright creepy/should be criminal, considering what she does "outside". We live in times when this matters, and it should matter to Blizzard as well.

Now for the game. Part of a more than 25 years old franchise, and genre that now has some very strong competitors, compared to what Diablo 2 had to "fight against". This is absolutely pathetic. Not a single aspect of this game contains anything truly new, truly innovative, some might say that Blizzard was never really known for the innovations, much more for perfecting what already existed, but that's a pathetic excuse this game does not deserve. And for those that use the "it's just the initial release they will add it later they don't have the 15 years of added content PoE has", I would tell them to do things that would get deleted from this review. 10 years of development, absurd budget, (100s of millions and I am not even exaggerating) and the opportunity to look at what Path of Exile, Last Epoch or Grim Dawn did, copy it, and make it better with the insane resources studio like Blizzard can offer. They did absolutely none of that. Non-existent endgame, one boss that's basically a corpse rush until you make it. Season 0, and characters already hit for billions of damage. Boring, extremely boring stats that are just % increases. Why are there no class specific stats on items, why is everything just so uniform, every single class has damage to close enemies, reduced damage from distant enemies is that really what the combined brains of thousands of people that worked on this game were able to come up with? Critical chance and critical damage? Really? We haven't seen that ever before... This is not a sequel this is not a new game. It should have been. Stop making excuses for something created by this behemoth of a studio that gets dumpstered in content and creativity by a group of 20 people and a hamster. It's something that "works", which of course it does, it's geared towards a certain group of players and they will buy it. I absolutely don't care about graphics in games, so that's something I am not going to spend too much time on, and probably the reason why I am even going to give it a 3 and not 1/10. The game looks good, the cinematics look good. But everything underneath it is worthless. And that makes that nice coat of paint worthless as well. I am not going to talk about all the "problems" people have with leveling and grind being hard. Games should be hard...but also rewarding. With both gameplay and interesting loot. This offers none of that. Those supposedly infinite different builds are 3 builds (at best!) per class, that use the exact same skills, and pretty much the same, "most efficient", paragon board. Barbarian, for example, has 3 skill slots locked in, because everything else is trash, so everyone uses three shouts. Pinnacle of game design by one of the biggest developers in the industry. The story...exists? I guess? And I love Diablo books and lore. Nothing in this game made me interested in the characters or their journey...

And one last thing. Pricing. Premium priced game (yes 70 dollars is a premium end of discussion) has no right to have microtransactions in it. Absolutely none, I despise everyone that says that cosmetic only microtransactions are fine in games you pay full price for. I don't like them in f2p, but I am willing to stomach that, if the game is worth it. This is not the case, and it's disgusting. Then you have three battlepasses, there are for sure going to be paid dlcs, and the price of those cosmetics is exorbitant as well.

To finish this off. I do not recommend buying this game under any circumstances. I know that writing this review is worthless, and that people will do exactly that. This is Diablo 3 somehow downgraded sideways.

The tree(new bounty system) awful rewards in t4
Gambling with orbs seems worthless in t4, everyone avoids events
Helltide is an annoying chore maybe put the chest items into tree.
Nightmare dungeons are more tedious than anything. Im not going to use the ones with heavy minus to my builds damage or burning my rescource. Why are there all bonuses for elemental damage appearing when playing a physical class, makes the whole crafting part pointless.
Dungeons on a whole 75%+ have too low mobs. They keep nerfing the good ones

Class builds are boring, 1 spender. Many skills are useless, end up using the same defensives across all builds.

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
