This is one of the worst games in the last decade. To give you an idea how broken Metacritic review system is: Over 5 thousand people logged into this site to warn you how bad this game is and that doesn't effect the "Metascore" at all. Instead it is currently rated 88 with only 1 negative review, Metascore is a separate reality. I would suggest ignoring it and reading user reviews.`

My favorite things about Diablo 2, in no particular order: -Ladder race -PK'ing -Item trading -Character customization -8 player games -Sense of community I give diablo 3 a 0/10 because in my opinion it has none of the fundamental aspects that i loved in Diablo 2.

I give diablo 3 a 0/10 because in my opinion it has none of the fundamental aspects that i loved in Diablo 2. There is now leveling ladder and understandably so because it only takes the dedicated player around 2 days to get to level 60. There is no PK'ing and there be no PK'ing. Blizzard will add a WoW styled arena PVP system at some point, but that leaves me feeling like I'm playing LoL rather than Diablo. Maybe I'm a bit strange, but I enjoyed trading in Diablo 2. Yes it took effort to find someone that was looking for the items you had available. And yes it took more time to find someone that was looking for those items that had something to offer that you were interested in. But I am sorry, I don't play games casually, and I don't want the games I play to be made for casual players. The inclusion of a real money auction house destroys a barter system and opens for the potential of newbs "buying wins." To me choosing which skills you're going to use is not costumizing a character. All level 60 Barbs will have the same skills and play styles available to them. In diablo 3 you will create no more than 5 characters, unlike Diablo 2 where you might have made as many as 100 characters if you found a new neat item or had an off the wall build idea. No attribute placement, no skill tree, and no committment to any decision that you make in-game simply prevents any sort of replayability in my eyes. Diablo 2, released more than a decade ago, supported 8 players in-game. How they chose to reduce that number in half for a 2012 release date is beyond me. Most people have more than 3 friends they would like to play with. Beyond that with only 3 other people to interact with it reduces the sense of community. The chances of finding like minded people or a clan to join are significantly hendered purely by the numbers of people you'll meet in a game. Because we all know that bnet 2.0 certainly is isolated and does not help anyone find a sense of community.

So there you have it. TLDR; Diablo 3 has 0 of my favorite features from Diablo 2. So it gets a 0/10 from my review.

Unlike past games in the Diablo series, you as a player are left completely out of Blizzard's equation. Your money, however, is not. Granted, PVP in Diablo was never that great, but, huh?) it's pretty obvious that they're trying to take as much of your money possible with as poor of a product that they can feasibly manage. Aside from a monthly subscription, this game was constructed from beginning to end out of a playbook to maximize addiction and minimize reward. In other words, Koreans will love it.

So you've already spent your money? That's fine. You get to click things, and, like Diablo 1 and 2, the first few sections are actually quite fun. However, by the time you've reached the second act, the world will have grown stale, and the old monsters you were clicking on will be replaced by new monsters to click on. It's a gameplay style that grows old fast, and even though I haven't played a point-and-click hacknslash for years, it felt just as boring as the day I put down the last one.

In conclusion, Diablo 3 is a boring game meant to take your money if you have an addictive personality. There is no fun here, only grind.

They enjoy a challenging interactive experience. Once again, as is happening more and more now these great games which made these companies stand out originally, are being remade as simplified versions. Who are these people Blizzard think are out there that are incapable of abstract thinking? For starters we are PC users so no need to bring a game down to console standards. Secondly, I was a young teenager when I was playing Diablo II and I loved it, I had no difficulty adapting to a challenging game, and that's what made me keep coming back.

Also, for those reviewers saying people are too hard on this game for not being like Diablo II and it should be considered a new game on it's own, that's complete rubbish, if they intended it as a new game or a reinterpreting of an old one Blizzard could have given it a different name.

Diablo 2 was just a simple enter into the game and simply start clicking on enemies, it had nice atsmophere and great animation for its time. It's sad that one of the things i most loved about Diablo 2 was it's Design and due to MODERN GAMES they have to completly change the style of Diablo, it's like Blizzard forgot how to do a Diablo game and simply borrow its style from its recent games such as World of Warcraft or Starcraft 2. The cutscenes are a great example of this, they are so generic it makes Final Fantasy parodies look a bit original, when in Diablo 2 cutscenes where dark and full of good spacing. Vote with your dollar. Don't buy a game that failed to transparently implement always online DRM. Not only does it disrupt play, but pirates were able to play on the 14th; the day before release.
So only paying customers were disrupted. That kind of consumer disrespect is shameful for a company that owes its current stature to investing in its players to create long term fans.

There is an argument that the online requirement is not DRM, but to protect the real money auction house. What that fails to account for is how simple it would be to exclude offline loot from eligibility on the auction. Just like how achievements work.

Anyway, if you require me to be online, Bliz, then I require you to be online.

Sluggish average ARPG. DRM and connectivity aside, I simply do not like the game at its core. Vaguely mimics the other Diablo's, but doesn't feel in any way like them. I would recommend Titan's quest over this lack luster. You may like the game shortly if you've never played an ARPG, but its the worst one to start with.

Diablo III, because the whole world has broadband right? It's ridiculous that I just paid 60 dollar for a product that is unplayable, I'd try to get my money back but I know they'd never do it. So i'm out 60 dollars because a game that previously featured offline gameplay decided that we shouldn't include that this time. Buyer beware, greed is a terrible thing. Enjoy your auction house.

SHOCKING FAIL FROM BLIZZARD! The first Blizzard game to TRULY disappoint on so many levels, and the reason I will NEVER "auto buy" a Blizzard game ever again.

From the moment I put the disc in the drive and was wrongly informed that my Windows 7 x64 OS was below minimum requirements, followed on by an installer that jammed on 0%, I knew something was WRONG. Googling these issues I was fairly shocked to find that these issues were in fact widespread, with many eager Diablo fans battling for hours to even get the game installed. Took the day off work to try this game out? TOUGH! Because if you get it installed, the servers are down anyway!

If you get the installer running, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the Diablo 2 theme tune playing throughout the install. The bad news is that the positives stop there. So now I'll start to list my issues with this game, which a vast majority of Diablo fans also seem to share:-

    1. Absolutely disgraceful graphics. Forget the World Of Warcraft styling (tired of hearing that?), as thats a given. The textures are low res and washed out. The colours are all wrong, it's too bright, theres no dark and dingy gothic areas you'd expect from the Diablo series (which seemingly started with Diablo 1 and promptly died with Diablo 2).

    2. Auto leveling, auto assigned skill points, stats now mean NOTHING.

    3. Auto assigned new skills at each level with NO skill tree to traverse. That's right, every level X character, class Y has EXACTLY the same skills and attributes as every other level X character, class Y. 4. Far too easy on normal difficulty and no choice to start at a higher difficulty. Fancy playing through this mess fest after you've completed normal difficulty? I DONT!

    5. Wizz-bang spell/attack graphics and mega-powered looking characters right from the get go! (and I literally mean, level ONE). Why bother scaling the spell or attack graphics/effects the more powerful your character gets? In Diablo 3 you can have a rainbow firing lightening storm of thunder crapping character right from the get go. All sense of achievement and progression RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW! I'm getting depressed thinking about the potential of this game, so I'll stop here. Why release an action RPG with all the RPG elements totally gutted out of the game? Leaving us with a rainbow colored bowel movement mess!

Overall I really don't think Blizzard could have f*cked this game up more severely. Casual gamers and console kiddies will no doubt disagree. Real fans of the Diablo franchise will be a bit more sympathetic to my viewpoint.

I guess Blizzard was trying to achieve a more fun and "refined" game. Why should they stick to a winning formula that's worked well twice before? Well, I'm about to do some "refining" myself and remove this rubbish from my hard drive.

    AVOID!

Skyrim was the same price as this, and that's an absurdity that Diablo 3 can charge as much.

I was curious about one of the reviews which mentioned this is the greatest game ever. In spite of all its short comings, how can an unplayable game be the greatest game ever? This had to be joke because he rated an unplayable game a ten. Also, the person mentioned the game has an economy that needs to be protected. But we purchased a single player game, not an MMORPG.

In addition, even though Ubisoft has DRM for Assassin's Creed, if their servers are down they don't kick you off the game. They just synchronize the game later when the server catches up. For battle net Diablo 3, if their server goes down, you're booted out of the game immediately and lose all your work. Right now I'm waiting for the server to come up, and when it returns it will make me play the SAME dungeon area for a fourth time because it wipes out all my work everytime the server crashes and boots me off.

In addition, whenever there are potential plot choices, we get no say in how to respond. Our characters answer for us without giving us a chance to accept quests or opportunities to help people.

I purchased a game advertised as a SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN with the ability to play with friends...THAT IS LITERALLY ALL THEY ADVERTISED...now it turns out i bought a multiplayer game that allows you to play by yourself or with friends...Well your servers suck and thousands cant play the game they bought so if anything let this stand testimant as something a game company will never do or follow. 2. Error 34634, Error 23235, Error 347756, Error 331356, Error 4578464.. ... The list goes on...As you play this game you'll find you can't connect due to numerous numbered errors. I bet the error number is as randomly generated as the items you pick up in the game. 3. Connection Lost, Server Timeout, Server overloaded...Please enter the queue....The list goes on... As you play this game you'll find you are forced out of the game and back to the main menu because their servers are crap. Not only is this aggrivating as it happens numerous times within minutes but you have to RESTART from the last checkpoint...I freaking played the same level 4 freaking times because of random timeouts...i swear...blizzard you're on a roll with the randomness..I just wish it was stuff i actually liked. And each time you are forced to restart the dungeons are randomly different...a couple times it was cool cause i ended up in better dungeon passages but other times i was like...wtf is this..i dont like this option.

    4. I seriously have to enter a queue to play a game I purchased? Has anyone here ever purchased a game and then realized when they want to play it they have to wait in line to play it as if going on a rollercoaster? This game should be called Six Flags: Amusement Failure because that's exactly what it feels like i did. Instead of paying $60 for an amusement park admission and spending 2 hours waiting in line to go on the rides... I paid $60 for a game and have to wait in line for others to finish playing before there is room for me...and then heaven forbid #1, #2, or #3 happens and i'm kicked off the ride..i mean game..while i'm in midair... That's a way to get killed..and the same is in the game...sometimes it will freeze and by the time it's unfrozen you've died 40 times from monsters LOL...wowwwww

    5. Hardly any magic to choose from and use. All that happens is every 4 or so levels a new ability unlocks and you can power it up with runes or what not...but it would be so much better if you could pick up abilities like you can in any other RPG or game. Stumbling upon rare magics and spells would greatly increase the amount of options a player has in this game.

    6. The list goes on... Linear game play similar to Final Fantasy 13, although Final Fantasy 13-2 greatly improved on that...guess we'll have to wait for Diablo 3-2 to come out where they have fixed all the problems gamers had. The major point is..don't do anything revolutionary if you can't handle it. Blizzard you boast the 12 years this game took to make...and honestly let's see what you've covered in the same amount of time it took to make Avatar.

---1---7 hour game on normal...seriously? you call that long? That's an average console game...okay so i wont complain..but uh...how many 12 year long developed games are only 7 hours long? Seems to me like it should have taken you the average time it takes to make a game with this crap and that's 1-2 years... In 12 years I would not expect a game 7 hours long.. Take a page out of Squareenix's book and make a game at least 20 hours long.

---2---Bugs...you had 12 years to make a perfect game and yet there are so many bugs in this game it looks like you didn't even test it yourself. If I'm not getting stuck in an infinite wormhole that keeps me locked in an area no matter which direction i go in I'm being constantly teleported back 10 feet from where i started....wow...you definitely upped the physics...in fact...you defy all physics in this game!

Blizzard should have made a NORMAL game instead of playing around with the formula. diablo 1 and 2 were amazing..this game is like UNCHARTED 3 for PS3...it's great...but the second game was the prime and from there they obviously couldnt go any higher. This should have been a single player game offline with a multiplayer component. Some people dont care about the auction house and some people may want to play this game offline...say while they're on vacation or traveling or in the military where they dont have a connection all the time, or maybe they are poor and saved up to get this game because they really wanted it only to find they need to pay $50 a month for broadband too just to play it...oh and that reminds me...

I wanted a sequel that built upon all that Diablo 2 did well - not a crappier World of Warcraft. The requirement of internet connection to play at all would've been fine had the servers did not disconnect or go down. Can barely play a long session without a server error. Bitterly disappointed and frustrated with what looks like a really fun game - too bad I can't have sustained game play. Shame Activision. Shame Blizzard.

Ugh! Total ripoff....gameplay is decent but completely irrelevant because you can't play offline. I am often in locations with my laptop WHERE I DON'T HAVE INTERNET!

Blizzard had 11-12 years to get this right, and they chose to screw it up with a DRM scheme that punishes the paying customers. FAIL!!!!

This is the type of game that Blizzard should have killed and started over again. Sure, it may gross 3-4 million sales this year. I also won't buy their games without reading reviews anymore. Blizzard now feels like an average game developer to me, and that is because they released a product that sucks. If I could return it, I would. Of course, this review ignores the DRM issues, which many more people are upset about. Expand

Average Hack'n Slash game, but a really bad Diablo game.
Complete failure, and the user reviews speaks for itself.
What bothers me the most, is the game itself, not the login difficulties. Below average graphics, pretty nice soundtrack, but HORRIBLE voice acting. Poor story, there is no Diablo feel to the game at all. No RPG elements, such as character levling, it's all automated.

Wow. I just can't believe how blizzard has fallen so far from grace. I used to buy all their games, starting with the original warcraft. I think they've been in mmo-land for so long they don't even remember what made the original diablos great in the first place.

I was expecting a game that would keep me interested and playing for a long time, but instead, I hit max level on several characters, and the only way to progress through Inferno is to purchase items from the Auction Houses. I like to farm, and was looking forward to farming and upgrading my characters when I max leveled them, but it turns out that this game is not the Diablo I once knew. This is supposed to be a gear farming game, and for many people (myself included, and I have over 200+ hours in the game) post patch 1.03, getting your own upgrades to drop is almost impossible. I'm stuck in Act II Inferno, and being a hardcore gamer, I want to progress, but can't because I didn't have the game prior to the patch that nerfed the quality of the gear dropping. Upgrades in the gold AH are too expensive for me to afford, and I refuse to spend real money in the RMAH, so I'm stuck farming and never getting anything of value, and never progressing. Not fun at all. Now I login every couple days to check the gold AH, but don't really play anymore. Until drops are fixed so that people can actually get their own upgrades without having to use the AHs, this game is broken. Other issues include: always online makes hardcore frustrating (I won't play HC because I don't want to rubberband to my death), multiplayer is limited to four players (and you get punished for playing with friends as they take a cut of your magic find), builds are cookie-cutter or you won't survive in Inferno, almost every class has to kite monsters to survive in Inferno (the exception at the moment being a WW barb, but even they must kite at times, and given Blizzard's track record, expect this build to be nerfed), Blizzard customer service is horribly inattentive and they seem out of touch with their player base, patch 1.03 was a horrible disaster, and the CEO has promised us we'll get more of the same in 1.04.

My hopes for this game are all but dried up. If you loved earlier Diablo games, you probably will suffer the same disappointment I have. Avoid for now, but don't hold your breath that anything will get better. It's looking like this might be the beginning of the end of great games from Blizzard.

So many people have spoke about DRM as it is that I am not even going to touch on it...obviously its crap...but clearly at the same time Blizzard considers it necessary. The mistake was the real money auction house which by no means was worth dealing with DRM considering fans hate both. On other notes though...the game is a huge departure from Diablo in many ways...it just doesn't fully feel like a diablo game...the colors, the ambiance, the in-game cutsceneces (not cinematics mind you) its like the world of warcraft team took over, and although I played that game, they are two separate entities. I remember a diablo that scared the living crap out of me, with very dark haunting music and horrifying enemies, bodies on pikes and hung by their innards...that was the real stuff..it made you feel like you were slaughtering terrifying creatures. This game is easy...the characters are nowhere near as impressive as in the past...they talk too much....the bosses talk too much...and without going on a tangent its just literally been redesigned for the casual gamer and ultimately to make more money. Blizzard you really screwed the pooch on this one, 11+ years to develop this game...and although it is a mildy fun game(not nearly as addictive as the other two were) it is not a Diablo game. Simple story, diablo speaking?? Really....horrible voice-acting. Its just dumbed-down in every sense and I could go on all day. This game may appeal to new players and loyal fanboys who will make themselves play it, but the most loyal of the fans have been betrayed. I will absolutely play it, I payed 100 dollars for it...but I will not invest in another product by Blizzard, and unless this game is fixed...unless changes are made...the Diablo franchise is dead to me. I will not wait another 11 years for disappointment. Expand

It's classes are artistically dynamic and mildly interesting gameplay wise. Overall the game is has more in common with World of Warcraft then its progenitors but that is beside the point. The reason i am giving this a zero is that I am finally over DRM and the retarded money grubbing auction-house. This game is tantamount to highway robbery if you don't have internet. Also even if you do good luck getting on you it might happen right away it might not who the fuchs knows, Blizzard certainly doesn't. I would also like to point the hypocrisy of the real money auction-house, Blizzard has posited that gold farming in WoW is wrong but oh well if we get a cut its all hunkey dorey. On a more personal note I would like to say I own every game Blizzard has developed, and will not buy another one until they fire the apparent room full of retarded monkeys with typewriters who are high on mescalin running their anti-piracy/having common sense department. Another point of contention for me is the fact that it took them twelve years to make a game that looks four years old built on a server infastructure and DRM system i could have made with my pen1s nailed to my face. If games like Sins of Solar Empire and World of Goo (both of which are amazing) can release without DRM, and have a singleplayer while still making a profit. I'm inclined to believe that, Diablo 3 ,one of the most overhyped games ever that wasn't developed by Peter Molyneaux with a mewling sheep like fanbase that will buy anything Blizzard says is good because of their stellar track record since Warcraft 3 (sarcasm!) might make a profit. All in all I'm not saying pirate the game but I'm not saying don't pirate the game. I'm just saying the game is ultimately disappointing and is not worth sixty dollars for a game that could have been made without DRM at much higher quality in less then twelve years. Not only did Blizzard need 10 years to make this sub-par game, they have made it with MMO's in mind and moved it away from the "true way"of hack'n slash. There is so much info out on this game I feel no need to explain. Everything about it is just wrong. I really hope the way many fans react to this game/launch will teach Blizzard and the gaming industry something.

If it was a new IP stand alone game from people who never made an RPG hack and slash before I would rank it as meh, an average game. But as a Diablo game? It sucks so bad I can't even begin to explain. I don't care how many expansions, patches or DLC they can churn out. They can't fix this. This game has been **** screwed over and generally ruined from the ground up. There is no amount of polish that can hide the problems it has. Because they are all at its core. From what I can tell, it reverts back to a dumbed down, ancient gameplay formula, the tech used and mechanics of the game is atrocious in comparison to the games of today. If you put the failures of this game with the fact that Blizzard is such a large and powerful company and the game has been in the works for 10 years to produce the following list of failures, then I'm afraid your heart will sink once you realise you just wasted your game money on something not even worth 10 bucks on steam.

    a) Constant internet connection required for a supposed to be single player rpg
    b) Ancient and dumbed down gameplay
    c) The graphics and textures are ancient
    d) They have a zoom in option which you should never ever chose b/c it will make you cry
    e) Ancient isometric 3D nonsensical mess
    f) Boring gameplay elements

    h) Can't pause the game, EVER

Yet I don't see who really will throw real money for singleplayer or just COOP.
Perhaps for PvP..oh snap..wait...there's not full PvP ingame yet because Blizzard broke their rule "It's done when its done".
Low-res textures, low-poly models, terrible voice-acting, terrible sound effect, lack of content. Yup, there are different modes but all they do is adding more and higher-HP foes. It makes the game last longer, not an actual real content. LAG LAG LAG while you play singleplayer.. WTF? You lose connection - your game fails. Simple.
The game even doesn't feel grim. Doesn't feel like Diablo game. Your 7yo can play it with no problems.
