Yes, they deserve it. That's the short answer. The long answer is gonna take me a whole day to write. Even metacritic's 5000 characters limit reviews won't be enough. Diablo III was just a huge series of disappointments.

I hate to give a 0 score to Diablo III, graphics are great, weapons are awesome and a lot of great cinematics. BUT! no offline mode. Seems like it's just Diablo II revamped. Mainly servers keep crashing => if it's online only then have it working before the release! I bought a game now that I can't use when I want then the question is what did I pay for?

Two nights in a row of trying to log on. Any failure of this magnitude would utterly destroy another game, but since its got the Diablo name, people keep "trusting" that blizzard will deliver. Blizzard is owned by Activision folks. You can't rely on them to deliver anything but something to please the Activision stockholders.

Blizzard openly mocking their customers with hamster videos in their twitter feed, and as always blaming the customer for the inability to connect to the game in the first place. In their concerns for piracy they opted not to provide a single player experience in the truest sense, demanding a high speed internet connection to even play the game this has left a bad taste in even the most rabid Blizzard supporters mouth. Most criticism of the game falls on the constant need to be connected to the Blizzard servers, which have spent more time offline then on as launch day continues.

A myriad of installation issues have also been reported, some which had existed even in the beta, but yet were never corrected.

The game it self leaves little ground breaking material, it feels and plays like Diablo II, for a new game it feels more like a expansion on a game nearly a decade old. Your sixty dollars are better spent elsewhere.

    Gameplay: 2/10
Extremely dumbed down, what exactly were the devs thinking when they decided to nix the skill tree in favor of some atrocious "customizable" rune system? It's hard to **** up an already perfected game genre (especially when Blizzard originally set the standard of dungeon-crawlers) but this game has actually done so. Wait it doesn't end there... Blizzard essentially signed a death warrant for its own game from Day 0. Introducing a Real Money Auction House has destroyed many RPGs whether MMOs or Single player (take a look at why Korean RPGs never really went international until recently). RMAH's destroy in-game economics and replay value so why introduce it at all? To snag up all the sales that the 3rd parties were getting in D2?

One of the greatest characteristics of D2 was to create a personal "build" for a class e.g. Rabies Druid. With D3, the makers of the game took away a very important facet of the franchise and this alone should hint at its unworthiness as a title in the Diablo series.

    Graphics: 1/10
Really now? Might as well have copied "Fate"'s cartoonish style. Maybe the consumers might've been more forgiving...

    Sound: 6/10
Great music as always, decent voice acting. Not the best but passable.

    Controls: 3/10
D3 attempt to carry on the Diablo series' tradition of 2-mouse button-oriented control playstyle is a bit nostalgic. But what happened to the innovation and ingenuity of the old Blizzard?

    Story: 1/10
Gone are the epic stories that once defined all Blizzard games. Throw together some half-*** bull**** set in the same environment as the other two games in the series, slap a Diablo logo on the game, and voila there you have it, the latest Diablo sequel.

Misc.: Only redeeming quality would be that it is still pretty addictive to play but I would attribute that to the type of game it is.

A classic, solid hack n slash with great graphics.
Too bad it's unplayable due to some executive decision to not allow a single player version of the game be able to run without CONSTANT internet access.

With that decision comes both positives and negatives, and I'm sure reviews will cover the positives in great detail. You can't make a cool auction house without server authority/validation. You can't make it an eSport with awesome PvP without a server authority on gear and other stuff.

But there are also negatives, and the big one is the one we're experiencing tonight. If you insist on using a server, you're going to screw players over with server problems.

So yes, remember that this was a key decision, and that Blizzard should be called out on it, because there's really no excuse.

All talent customization is gone, making one of the most anticipated releases nothing more than a mid 90's hack and slash. No character customization, attributes are assigned automatically on level up, skills can be swamped and are very limited (so no more experimental char builds), no visual customization. Overall too gear dependent (again RMAH...) and too dumbed down. Graphics look too much like warcraft and overall 2006-ish, they don't have that dark feel of previous installments. Story is sketchy at times, gameplay forces you to linearity, you can't skip quests and rush to the next act like in diablo 2, no you have to do everything 4 times over. If you want to maintain your image as a game company, it's typically advisable to make sure people can play your game after they've bought it. It also helps to make sure the game doesn't suck, especially if it's a well known and liked series. Blizzard couldn't have gotten at least one of these right?

But, unfortunately, the game itself really does warrant such a low score. It's without doubt one of the great gaming disappointments of recent years. Why? Well, to sum it up - the game feels like it has no soul, it is an alarmingly empty and shallow experience (even in multiplayer) that feels like some sort of bizarre on rails clicking 'experience' (I hesitate to even call it a game because it genuinely doesn't even feel like one). While the first two games were also clickfests, they were great because they had a great amount of character - they were immersive experiences that allowed you to feel your character's progression in the world and feel genuinely excited at the prospect of awesome loot. D3 is just weird to play because for some reason Blizzard have stripped out ALL forms of character customisation and you are just playing an empty shell of a character that looks and plays like every other player out there. This combined with the child-like difficulty level of the game on normal (which you are forced to play through) and the ridiculously high drop rate on blue and yellow items means that loot is just nothing more than generic text. I can't associate any fun at all with anything in this game - it is so empty it is scary. I am actually surprised and shocked that Blizzard put out a game this bad with their usual standards of quality.
Sadly this game is being torn apart by the general public and fanbase and rightfully so.

The graphics would've been impressive in 2002, but that's minor compared to what happened to the artistic design. The game is incredibly cartoony and does not look or feel at all like Diablo. Even Torchlight which deliberately goes for the cartoony look feels more Diablo-esque. In addition, the environments feel really uninspired and - again, unfitting.
The soundtrack is a bunch of soulless tryhard orchestral arsegravy, interrupted by a few brief moments of Matt Uelmen.
The gameplay is somehow even more simplified than in the earlier Diablo games. Even on the harder difficulties, the game is always unbelievably easy. Blizzard kept telling beta players that it gets harder later on, but that was a blatant lie. Customization has been largely removed to make the game even more casual and easy. The game itself is very short with little to do once you complete it. The rune system could've been interesting, but they even screwed that one up. The writing is horrendous and largely saturday morning cartoon level. Don't expect cool, unique boss dialogue that you'll remember for years to come. Instead, you get "You'll never beat me!", as if this were an episode of He-man. Most bosses would better fit a Warcraft title, although some of them might even be too wacky and cartoony for that. The voice acting is quite bad as well, with many of the classes/characters using ludicrous accents that sound hilariously bad. No one speaks like that in the world, and rightly so. It's the Skyrim-effect, where the voice actors (who I have to assume have never heard any foreign person speaking) try to speak with some sort of non-specific, generic foreign accent and end up sounding like a bad Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonator. I could go on about the real money auction house, always online DRM, 4 player limit, poor connections and so on, but I think other reviews have already gone over those more than enough times. The bottomline is, if you buy this game you are willingly and knowingly supporting the brutal rape of a once great franchise. If this weren't a Blizzard game, it would already have sunk and been buried, but unfortunately they've got enough blind fanboys who will buy literally anything if it says Blizzard on the cover. Expect this turd to float around for a while yet.

I see many people complaining about the users that rated this game low because of the servers. You say that we should review the actual game and not the servers.. but how can I play the game if the servers are not working and I can't login? Last night I tried for almost 3 hours until I manage to enter, and then I was able to play for 20 or 30 minutes because it was already too late. Last night I tried for almost 3 hours until I manage to enter, and then I was able to play for 20 or 30 minutes because it was already too late. So, I'm sorry but the login is still part of the game, a very important part, so if it's not working I can't do anything else, so I can't give this game a bigger rate if all I saw for almost 3 hours of `play` was a screen with errors. The took everything that made diablo diablo and removed it. theres basically no character customization, you cant spend talent points, you cant choose which talents you want as you just get the next one available when you level, theres no button customization. They even took out the scrolls of TP and identify.....thats like not having your presents wraped at christmas time....essentiallyThe took everything that made diablo diablo and removed it. theres basically no character customization, you cant spend talent points, you cant choose which talents you want as you just get the next one available when you level, theres no button customization. The games cinematics for when they exist are awesome and Leah is hot. DRM is fine no issues there. The game has no PVP though and clearly is WoW as you can see it has a WoW login screen and banners are straight from WoW. 0/10 missing PVP which stops me from showing my skillz.

I wish I didn't get to log in, I wish I did have a connection error because this game is boring as hell. I loved Diablo 1, and 2 was my favourite of the franchise but this is pure crap. I can see why it took them so long to release it, the higher ups must have played it and seen what a disgrace it was to the franchise. And at the end they must have given up and just cashed in. The game was blatantly put together as a quick cash machine for a well known franchise.
10 years of development? Sure. FYI, Bethesda made Skyrim in 5.

I am giving this one a zero, I feel I am being relatively generous with this score as well. This game is a sequel to what was a great game for this very reason Blizzard has made one of their worst games to date. They thought they could just roll through on a name -- think again. It is literally impossible to even get into the game with Blizzard's new multilayer only solution to DRM.I am giving this one a zero, I feel I am being relatively generous with this score as well. It is literally impossible to even get into the game with Blizzard's new multilayer only solution to DRM. Blizzard and every other dev take this game as an example DO NOT use online as a DRM it is just being lazy learn better encryption then develop games. Now when you FINALLY get into this game you will notice the lacklustre game-play and graphics. Then once you have played for a day you will have beat the game already. This game has literally no playability. If it costed less or was free with 3-months(not a whole year sub) of Word of Warcraft things may be different. In the state that this game was released, sorry to say but it is utter garbage. Expand

Blizzard USED to be a company that gamer's respected for only releasing polished games. The past few days have shown that Blizzard has changed. The simple lack of being prepared with adequate server capacity and the sheer amount of errors related to in game bugs (templar shield equip), Battlenet issues, language support, etc is just insulting. In addition to this, the fact that many of the game's features were cut from the initial launch (RMAH, PVP, etc) tells me that they had even more time to focus on the core gameplay and to iron out the simple issues of being able to log in. Unfortunately, I have already paid for this game so my boycott of Blizzard will have to wait, but mark my words that I will NEVER buy another product from Blizzard for as long as I live. Expand

I blame their design decisions. They changed the game design on all things that made the game fun, entertaining, addictive. I loved Diablo because there was no BALANCE. They tried to think of everything people could do and removed our freedom. They treat us like criminals. There is no freedom. There is no point playing. Banal **** Boring. Carebear Design. They denied their original target audience. What we loved about the game, they removed and changed. They changed things as if we didnt liked the things that were in the previous games. They forced everyone to cycle through abilities instead of using just the cool ones we like over and over. They removed the power of the gems. Made crappy worthless gems. They made it so there is no meaningful choice. Everyone is a clone of each other within their classes. Customization is a gimmick. They tried to convince us that customization occurs based on gear! Thats not what we wanted. They made it so nobody can fail. There is no true feeling of victory either. They removed the freedom. They removed open world griefing and PVP. They removed Godly broken characters. Players cannot aspire to godlike immortality through build and gear. They capped power and mitigation of difficulty curve. They removed specializing for more power. They tried to balance everything. They removed absurd levels of magic find. They made it so we cant have some builds and classes that are more suited for magic find such as the sorcerer was. They removed rushing. They force us through the experience and content. They removed repetition of the same areas and boss rushing. Trying to force us to play their way. They removed absurdly hard to reach high levels that differentiated pro players from losers who kept dieing and going back in the XP ladder. They changed the art style. Cartoon game. They added online only DRM. They destroyed their game by offering pay to win through real money auction house so that they can gain money. I hate Diablo 3. Jay Wilson and other developers/designers ruined the game I loved. Expand

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
