First of all, the length of time Blizzard made us wait for the game, as well as the length of time they spent beta testing were obviously squandered. While the core game play itself seems bug free, everything else from the client, to logging in, to the auction house, to even doing in-game trading is finicky and simply just plain bad - untested, unfinished product. At the heart of the game is the Diablo hack and slash combat we all know and love, and the skills and classes feel good. From this aspect the game excels very well. However, and unfortunately for Blizzard, the fact the servers were horrible on the first week, and still lag constantly, the auction house which continually gives you error codes whenever you try to buy an item or sell an item, the incredibly short, predictable, and tired storyline that any elementary school student could have come up with, the incredible shortness of Act 4, and the quite clearly 4 year old graphics engine combine to give a rating - 5/10. The game hits all the points we wanted from D2, and that's not saying much considering that game is 12 years old. Feels like a Diablo 2 expansion pack more than a new full game. Expand

Blizzard failed with D3. WIth the money they are raking in on this and other games, it's criminal that they don't put enough into the infrastructure of their servers to ensure a fun, consistent gaming experience. I loved the 2 hours of this I could play on launch day. Blizzard decided to force always-on connections with no choice of offline playing, so now I've been waiting well over 5 hours to get back into a game I preordered months ago. I'll change my rating when I get to play more, but seeing as the game is unplayable right now, this is the rating it gets.

No offline play. Broadband required? If you have Satellite it is unplayable. In other words if you live in a rural area this game is not for you. I don't know if the actual game is any good, because the best internet available to me is too crappy to run the game. Thanks for nothing Blizzard. I used to be a fan of the Diablo games, but since I can't play the new one...

This game isn't even worth looking at it. Obviously, all of them developers are largely overpaid. and to say we've waited 12 years for this game, is a bit shameful. Shame on Blizzard for delivering such a botched up, wanna-be World Of Warcraft products to their clients. And shame on us, the clients, for believing they'd have done otherwise.

Also, compared to D2, this game is dumbed way, way down. Don't get me wrong, when you can actually play the game it's mildly entertaining, but far too easy.

D3 is to action RPGs what Halo is to FPS games: A dumbed down game designed for the unwashed masses, rather than a game engineered to be a fun, challenging ride.

This is a game which was developed for 10 years, I feel I could have gotten a degree in software writing, rendering, modelling and texturing and made a better game in the same timeframe. The lack of single player feels stingy and irritating, as the previous 2 games were primarily based on single player. The cash shop allows players to pay to win, the annoying thing is of course that you cannot choose to not play with these people as there is no singleplayer, playing the game requires you remain online. Similarly, the feel of the game, that is, the music, the texturing etc isn't in a unique style. Personally it feels cartoonish and unrealistic, so much so that the 128 colour graphics of d2 are more realistic. The music feels like they were trying to improve on a masterpiece by rewriting Tristram's theme. If you have played Diablo 1 or 2. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Need to be connected to Battle.net servers in order to play a SINGLE PLAYER game. Very draconian style DRM. Game only actually runs on 50% of users' computers. Others are having terrible graphics and performance issues. The game has been made easier and casualised to appeal to the Call of Duty crowd. Avoid this game at all costs. There might actually be a good game here, but between the error preventing login and the constant server downtime, this game isn't yet worth anyone's time. Most frustrating is the fact that even if you're playing single player you still must connect to a server at all times. So if your internet is down or there are too many people playing the game at once, you can't play the game at all.

Well, the game is pretty good. But, why I need their servers to be up to play singleplayer, by myself, is utterly confusing. Can the game not be hosted using my bandwidth? At this point I think my computer would be a more stable server than their real servers. Right now, I'm giving it a 0, because if I can't play it, it's a waste of time and money.

However, a company with Blizzard's experience (5+ major online service launches) has no excuse for the amount of issues this game has/is currently having on launch day. I have been able to play for a grand total of 15 minutes today, as the servers have been consistently down since noon, with the ETAs given by the customer reps being off by 2+ hours and constantly slipping. This kind of thing was understandable back during vanilla WoW's launch, as that was new territory for a company with little experience with large-scale server infrastructure, but with the amount of experience they have now, there is no excuse.

I know people are saying "oh well, things will be sorted out tomorrow", but they won't. As with the rest of Blizzard's major launches (although SC2 was pretty smooth, to be fair), expect 2-3 weeks of this BS with no attempt on Blizzard's part to set things right.

Basically, the title screen and intros look quite nice. The actual in game part so far has just been a case of clicking on enemies and nothing else. Unfortunatley the DRM/always on internet seems to have totally destroyed any gameplay experience for the majority of people I know. Several of my friends have got refunds and others have not been able to, but are planning on doing a charge back as they havent recieved a satisfactory quality of service. In short, this game could have been a giant, but due to Blizzard forcing people to be online to their extremely bad bnet servers, not many people can actually play.

I hope Blizzard realize that they're only hurting their image and customers by placing such a stupid and idiotic limitation on a game which was once loved.

Great job Blizzard. Just got my Collectors Edition in the mail and I can't play it because of the DRM that you've implemented. If you're going to put DRM in a game, you sure as well better be able to handle people logging in. Can't even play offline.

I'm sure the game is good, but you can't rate what you can't play on launch day.

And to those claiming that all these bad reviews are all about "server issues" and not about the game I have this to say: since they made it compulsory to be "always online" to play this game, they made server issues an integral part of actually playing the game. It's not a separate experience. The issues with their servers are part of the game playing experience as a whole, and that aspect is so underwhelmingly disappointing. I had faith in Blizzard, I played WoW for years before I moved onto greener pastures. I loved all the Warcraft and Starcraft games. But I convinced myself that I wasn't going to buy D3 because of the "always online" garbage, and the RMAH. But I eventually came around to giving Blizzard the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps they can pull it off. If the servers are always up, and my connection is stable, I could probably get over not being able to play away from home. Unfortunately this is completely not the case. It actually doesn't matter if the servers have 100% uptime from this moment onwards until the eventual heat death of the universe. The story was lazy, the combat boring, and the music repetitive. I enjoyed the voices, but that wasn't much of a comfort. Honestly, if you have to go through the full game and change a mode to "see the real thing" as I was challenged to do, the product has already failed.

I got the game for "free" through the 1 year wow subscription and I still feel ripped off. I don't know why anyone would pay anything for this game, let alone $60+. The only point I can see to the game is to be a farmville in dungeon crawler form to let people buy stuff with real world money so Activision can skim their cut off the top. I've played games that are literally given away by their developers that are better made than this.

Add to that the fact the game can only be played online and that the servers that allow you to play (a game that runs LOCALLY) were down preventing it from being used, so you also will lose the game whenever Activision decides they've milked all they can out of this stillborn disaster.

If you want a good old school dungeon crawler, get Torchlight instead, far better game play, better graphics, better story, and far cheaper.

That would be fine if the servers worked, and if every Internet connection was reliable. More to the point, the game itself is cartoony, confusing and short. One group of players beat it in seven hours. It's almost like they hired 3D Realms of Duke Nukem Forever fame to build the game. Dislike. Expand

Blizzard: Online mode is fine. You'll still get to play.
Reality: Error 37, Error 3006, Error 30008 at login. After getting in, 400-1000ms latency, disconnections with Error 3007 every 5-10 minutes. Unplayable.
Blizzard: Connection issues are completely client-side. Our servers are fine. It just happens that tens of thousands of players happen to have bad ISPs when they started playing

Blizzard: Connection issues are completely client-side. Our servers are fine. It just happens that tens of thousands of players happen to have bad ISPs when they started playing Diablo 3. Clearly those ISPs secretly improve their service when other games are being played.
Reality: Excuse for one of the worst launches in history, and the most broken and unpolished title ever released by Blizzard.

Blizzard are the biggest gaming company in the world (11 billion dollars) with over 4000 employees and they still cant launch a game right. Ain't this one big fail? Now because of their greed every legitimate player is suffering. The real money auction house is one of the many things that have ruined this game. Now every kid with their parents credit card at hand can become stronger than people who play for a much longer time. I wouldn't mind it if there was no PVP. But there is, so its not going to be fair at all. Another point - there is no single player and no LAN. Which is just absolutely retarded, even for Blizzard. I just played a bit of single player right now and it was LAGGING MASSIVELY. I just cant express my feelings with words alone. Blizzard failed in so many ways... Expand

This game is such a disappointment after Diablo 2. They completely removed any form of character customization. Every single hero of a class is the same as any other hero of that class. There are no more unique builds both attributes and skills are automatically gotten for you as you level up. It tries far too hard to hold your hand and made it impossible to make your character unique.

Big fan of D2, this is just the worst launch in history, of any product, not just a game!
Paying for something and being denied the use of it = Theft

The original creators of Diablo no longer work in Blizzard. They currently work on Torchlight 2 which is going to be the true Diablo successor. Not this piece of broken ****

Come on, we can't EVEN review the game you know!?!?!?

Its pretty obvious, Blizzard is how old? How many patch day crashes, launch day crashes, and other things have they dealt with? Don't you think, with what could be their hugest release ever, they maybe should get it right? Vanilla Wow BC WOTLK Cata SC2 Any major wow patch All of those have been marred by issues. It's just that bad, seriously. Let's show Blizzard that they can't get away with all this crap they did. Is this really what we waited for 12 years? Diablo is never going to be the same. Thank you Blizzard for ruining this game.

I do not even know how people can even gave 2/10 for this game. This is most overhyped and biggest let down of all time. Blizzard fail to deliver, no wonder they fired so many people. Their games no longer has the factor of quality and polish. Always online-DRM and then no capcity to handle all pre-orders and known retail and digital sales? Buying a product you can't use.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
