Played with 1.1.0 patch. Cannot progress at all due to a bug in "a wise friend" quest after 30+ hours of playing. Crashing time to time.
Probably about 40% of play time was for finding entrances. This game is a buggy version of Tomb Raider, not AC.

Pessimo comparto grafico, trama buona, gameplay tremendamente ripetitivo e noiso... troppo arcade.

This game is solid, with really fun gameplay, good raids, a compelling main character background and closest relationships... Then 5 hours after that, a slog.  You get the picture.  If they wouldn't have as much "forced filler" (just make some of those alliances clearly voluntary), it would serve the main plot and make it feel much more powerful and urgent.  Also the leveling is too fast.  It removes any feeling of accomplishment. So yeah, solid game, fun combat, good core story when you get to it, but to bogged down with fluff. Expand

That's the new standard for the Assassin's Creed experience, and that in itself isn't a miserable thing, even if the games become closer to chore lists than actual enjoyable challenge. After Odyssey, I expected the repetitive action game with RPG elements to come back, but I wasn't expecting the horrendous bugs and random performance issues to still be present in the game well over a month after launch.

Visual bugs and minor gameplay ones I can handle, so long as they aren't debilitating. What starts to test my patience are the bugs where an NPC stops walking, preventing me from completing her quest, which is followed by a bug where I can't speak to anyone at Ravensthorpe. No amount of reloading past save files or progressing with the main story helped, so I'm stuck being unable to do much of anything at the main camp. Since I'm over twenty hours in, this really took me out of the entire experience.

Then there are the random performance drops. My laptop isn't exactly a top of the line, $5,000 beast that can run brand new games at 240 FPS in 4k resolution, but it's more than enough to handle Valhalla when the game is behaving. After fast traveling, I'd randomly drop to a max of 25 FPS, and that was when I was looking at a featureless area with no NPCs around. That would always require a full restart of the game, and when it can happen multiple times per play session, I started to think that maybe I don't even want to bother.

Another disappointment is how visually dull everything is. With ancient Greece, even if it wasn't 100% accurate to the time period, the development team could make these grand structures of shining white marble. I know you lose some of that with 9th century England, but the core of Assassin's Creed has always been exploring interesting historical areas using its freerunning system to scale magnificent architecture of the time. Mud huts and longhouses just aren't visually stimulating. When you do get the odd tower, they're all in some state of ruin and completely identical to the next tower.

The entire experience isn't all bad, though. The gameplay is enjoyable at its core, even if it doesn't evolve enough to justify the forty+ hours of runtime. It's still satisfying to chop everything in your path, and the skill tree system they implemented isn't entirely unwelcome. It's more for show, since there's so much overlap in each one, but the idea was cute enough to be worth a try. It's always a bit of a rush to blow your horn and start a raid, even if that diminishes over time.

Another positive in the game's favor is the slightly tighter story focus. It reminded me of Assassin's Creed II in that way, and the series could really use a return to a strong character like Ezio. Eivor isn't unlikeable really, but you're always going to sacrifice narrative focus when your game is full open world. Odyssey at least had an engaging enough protagonist AND a visually spectacular world, so Valhalla feels like a step back as an entire package.

As a whole, the game wasn't ready to be released. Even a month after release, the game still isn't ready. I've played Assassin's Creed games on launch before, and while buggy to an extent, I've never been walled off from significant chunks of those games because of the bugs. It'll probably be in a much better state by the end or January, but I'm really disappointed with this entry in the series.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a game that makes the brand identity crisis more obvious than ever. This game has a passionate team behind it. The writing, especially towards the end may be the best the franchise has seen in a long time. The revival of the modern day and First Civ story are a welcome addition and tie in a lot of open questions that previous entries never cared to answer.Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a game that makes the brand identity crisis more obvious than ever. This game has a passionate team behind it. The writing, especially towards the end may be the best the franchise has seen in a long time. The revival of the modern day and First Civ story are a welcome addition and tie in a lot of open questions that previous entries never cared to answer.

However, many of the issues that plague the franchise since Origins and became even more obvious in Odyssey are still there and don't seem like they are going to be solved in the near future. Valhalla continues the RPG route and leaves oldschool fans like me unsatisfied again. Just like in Origins and Odyssey, you are greeted with various different RPG mechanics, skills, tons of unimportant side content and a massive world to explore (I don't mean this in a good way). The bloat that especially plagued Odyssey returns again, but is handled a little better since Valhalla tries very hard to tie every little side activity into your main story and the growth of your settlement. Side stories are mostly non existent since all major narrative quests are part of the various main story arcs. Everything else on the map comes down to a bunch of different collectibles, skills, gear and little world events that don't really make an impact whatsoever.

Theoretically, this doesn't sound so bad, but in reality it just shifts one issue into another location. Yes, it's true that there is no need to do side quests in order to have a high enough skill-level to continue the main story anymore. But the reason for that is that the side content basically became main content and is now mandatory. There are tons of different story arcs in Valhalla. One half is actually amazing, really engaging and makes you want more. The other half however, is often quite pointless and feels like massive filler. Don't get me wrong, they are still well written, but they really damage the quality of the main narrative. Everytime when the story feels engaging and makes you want more, it stops and the game forces you to finish one or two of the filler arcs before you can continue the really interesting arcs. Therefore, the main story never truly picks up until the very end.

Also, since Origins the AC games don't really have a clear ending anymore. There is no real climax and a satisfying credit roll. Instead, it's just another finished quest and after a short "congratulations!" you are being thrown back into the open world. Part of that probably has to do with the fact that Ubisoft wants to continue the story in future DLC. A practice that I'm not really the biggest fan of. Valhalla with it's sheer size often feels like work, rather than a fun experience. If a game demands so much time and attention, I feel like it needs to earn this right. Games like The Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2 do this by really pushing forward story-driven open-world games and not releasing regularly. Valhalla, just like Odyssey before it, doesn't. This is just more of the classic Ubisoft content. Nothing that allows it to be as long as it is.

Overall, Valhalla tries to make the best out of a bad situation. Assassin's Creed has become an RPG franchise now, whether you like it or not. Odyssey embraced this and made very clear that it doesn't want to appeal to the older generation of fans. Valhalla is in a different situation, because it really tries to appeal to both sides. There is quite a lot of lore about Assassins / Hidden Ones, Templars / Order of the Ancients and First Civilization and almost everything of it is really good. In the bigger cities the game tries to emulate the feeling of older titles by including social stealth and blending in with the crowds. But in the end, it still is mostly a Viking fantasy with Assassin's Creed elements and fanservice added into it, never reaching the potential of older titles. It's still better than nothing though (looking at you Odyssey).

Apart from that, Valhalla often feels clunky and unpolished. There are a lot of bugs and glitches and the presentation at times may be a franchise low. Especially cutscenes, which for a long time were a prime discipline of AC with its fully mocap animations, are mostly nothing more than okay. The reason for that is because they now use AI animation presets to do most of the work, apart from a few mocap scenes.

But why is that? It's simple: Time. These RPG ACs are massive in every way. And with a development time of 2 1/2 years, the developers had to cut things short in order to deliver such a massive title. Quantity over quality in that case. Therefore, one can only hope that the next-gen AC will return the franchise to its roots. Delivering a smaller, but more thought out world, better cutscenes and a more streamlined story with an actual Assassin vs Templar conflict in the center. If you were looking for any of this in Valhalla, you will be disappointed.

The story is interesting and heavily based on history, characters have depth and make you care for your relationship with them. Voiceover work was done incredibly well both for the characters and the npc, it never felt like you were listening to a dude with a mic pretend to be someone. Their idea of being able to switch characters (genders) at any point with their clever signal scheme is very very nice, I can't count how many times I changed. Combat is smooth with nice hit impacts, every hit feels like it stuck in your opponent, the parrying system is very easy but balanced unlike other ac games were you were literally a god amongst men. I like that fights aren't leveled locked, for example I managed to raid places way above my level on my 40th attempt and a lot of swearing. When it comes to graphics no surprise there it's top notch. Music bangs and cinematography is decent. Lots of weapons and armors to choose and find. The store weirdly enough does not contain the coolest stuff in the game (except valkyrie armor i had to buy that it was beautiful). Also most of the store items or weapons at least you can get without money from vendors (luck based). Stealth gameplay is nice, the guards are the right amount of aware, they don't have the all seeing eye of aurus and they don't have object permanence issues. I also really like the quality of life decisions they made with the auto guided boat and horse that actually work well unlike witcher 3 were the horse would end up in narnia if you trusted it. Overall a very good game that I can safely recommend Expand

-Game crashes on average about every 8 hours. Frequent autosave helps this system from being even more annoying than it already is though.

-Item wouldn't drop from defeating enemy (x2)

-Died randomly from riding my horse on completely flat terrain

-Died from an enemy phasing through me

-Died from getting stuck in the terrain (x3)

-Quest npcs despawned, forcing me to restart (x3)

    - Destructible barrier respawned while I was still inside a building, trapping me inside.

-Tied up npc could no longer be picked up, forcing me to restart the mission

    -Quest character wouldn't spawn

    -Escort npc stopped moving (x2)

-Npc I was escorting stopped following me

These are just the glitches that forced me to restart, but there were plenty more that weren't as extreme.

The story is okay. The gameplay is similar to Odyssey. I like the weapon choices and dual wield options, although not having a single one-handed sword in a time period where almost everyone had one-handed swords is stupid. I also like the more meaningful armor and being able to upgrade it. Without the glitches, I'd give the game a 7. But overall REVIEW HAS ENCOUNTERED ERROR

The game for thousands of people can not be finishes as the Alliance map bug that they usually see near the end prevents them from finishing the main quest and seeing the end of the game. And for many this comes up after 100+ hours put it, you cant even re-load back.

Ubisoft while promising to address this bug and giving excuses like "We cant re-create this bug so it takes time" etc has just continued to create more content for their online store and ignored the problem for 2 patches now.

I have played over 40 hours by now. Only bots are at Cyberpunk 2077 who are trying to get better score for this broken unfinished mess. People like you are really cringe. Just cause you don't like good games,

This game has hardly any hardcore bugs, some small ones are expected in this big open-world game. But it's very much playable and runs well on any system. It's not even nearly as bad as Cyberpunk 2077, so haters should just stop their lies.

I'm extremely confused with hate, for me it has been one of the best gaming experiences of 2020. Most 2020 games have been incredibly mediocre like - resident evil 3 remake, cyberpunk 2077, marvel's avengers and so on. But AC Valhalla felt like another class compared to these others.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a great-looking open-world game with impressive landscapes and cinematography. However, the checklist collectible open-world still needs some work to feel truly engaging, and combat is too tedious and too frequent to be compelling. As a lapsed fan of Assassin's Creed trying to see if I can click with the series once again, Valhalla didn't quite hook me as I was hoping it would.

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a lot of fun and easy to sink dozens of hours into. It is the best entry in the more recent trilogy and genuinely elevates the gameplay mechanics. Content could be considered somewhat bloated still, but it is diverse enough and the setting and story is solid most of the way through.

Sneaking is fun, fighting is fun, walking through the great outdoors is so much fun. Sightseeing too! Valhalla is free minded and could be innovative, but lacks skills to persuade its players about that. [Issue#308]
