This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is an excellent adaptation of the books. Not outstanding, but excellent. Geralt is portrayed masterfully by Cavil. His mannerisms and motives are spot on. Yennifer is as cunning as ever and her expanded character creation was a very good add. Jaskier is just like I recall from the books. Ciri seemed truly scared and afraid of Cahir while she was on the run. I am interested to see how they portray a more confident bandit Ciri in the coming seasons after her training. The acting all around were superb. Netflix has even raised the countenance on dopplers. They seem to have much more meaningful or scariness to them then in the books. The locations and settings were diverse and believable. Artuza is just as I pictured from the books. I also saw no plastic water bottles on screen:) Expand

Other than the sometimes confusing shifts of timeperiods, really satisfied with how this turned out. Cavill proves to be a great witcher with some amazing cast for the other aswell.
Hoping this will get many more seasons!
Fun to see some scenes from the books in live action, just as how you imagined them!

Kevin Sorbo's Hercules by way of Game of Thrones aesthetic

It starts out as episodic tales of the wandering hero who values solitude and few words and it builds to a larger connected more epic adventure story. It grew on me. I'm not gonna lie; I didn't like the first few episodes. But I stuck with it. I got used to the humor and the comic character and just surrendered to the show

And for all those who are comparing it the Game of Thrones, just stop. Just because you love Game of Thrones it doesn't mean that you have to hate The Witcher. I was not that dragged into Game of Thrones after watching it's first few episodes.

Some also commented on how terrible it is when compared to the book. I never read any of the books but this series seems quite nice to me. Maybe when you compare this to the books, this might seem as absolute garbage.

Without having played the games and without having read the books, I can honestly say that The Witcher was pretty interesting from the start.

Every episode I watched, i relatively quickly knew which chapter its source was, and that is good. I also liked the new storyline telling a bit about the background story of Yennefer. The only thing I did not like was the ending: It was my favourite chapter in the book and I don't feel like it has been done justice here.

I don't get why the second season had to be so bad...

I'll say I was almost shocked at the high quality of this video series. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was the creator and showrunner for the series - which I did not know until after I watched the first episode. She has a very respectable filmography and I assume she has a very large role in the high quality of the series.

Obviously, not everyone is going to like an action/adventure/fantasy video series - but, if this is the type of subject material you favor, I would highly recommend that you watch this series.

It probably needs to be pointed out that Lauren Schmidt Hissrich first noteworthy writing effort was for the liberal/leftest American TV series "The West Wing". Hissrich has a strong liberal/leftest ideology that she imparts to this series. Some viewers may not be able to accept this because they are so strongly opposed to her political and social beliefs and/or because it is not within the original spirit of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski works. Regardless, the series itself is of high quality within the context of writing, casting, acting, directing, editing, costume, set design, etc, etc.

I just now took a look at the Metacritic user-ratings .This show is obviously not a "10" and it is obviously not a "0" - but, somewhere betwixt. There is an obvious highly emotional reaction to how Hissrich has deviated from the source material and re-imagined the Witcher into a woke/social-justice platform. I'm ignoring that issue for the most part in my review as I prefer to ignore political/religious/social issues in regard to fictional entertainment.

Spends a bit too much time setting up the story, plot and characters, if you are unfamiliar it will be very overwhelming what is happening, who is who and where the current on screen story is taking place due to erratic time skips. Some casting choices are a bit on the safe side but overall Herny Cavill, Freaya Allan and Anya Chalotra are great castings for Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Only the casting of Triss Merigold is a bit of a head scratcher, while she doesn't play a huge part yet in the series she will judging by the Books and Game. Triss being such a big name in the Witcher universe it was weird not having her play a bigger role in the story.

Overall I'd recommend anyone to watch until the third episode to give it a real shot, has decent fights, true to lore monsters, politics, nudity and overall good acting. Only major downfall of the first season was the slow burn, plodding story for the first few episodes and 1 or 2 uhhhh okay at best CGI moments but nothing thats a show killer. More budget and time and this could be a great show for years to come.

Oh and don't let the "critics" reviews give you a bad impression, let those idiots go back to drooling over a meh at best Star Wars Rise of Skywalker and a terrible end to Game of Thrones that they seemed to love. I think they watched completely different things than we did.

    Creativity/Imagination:
    - Plenty of original concepts of magic and bestiality. Subverting Netflix tropes (oh you think all women characters are going to be barbie-perfect? Nope). That makes things less predictable.
    - Some crucial scenes are actually the least imaginative and cookie-cutter. Namely the first scene of Ep1 and the last scene of Ep8. It's really sad that the first and last episodes have the weakest moments when they should be the strongest.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who never read the books, and only played the games, my opinion is that the show is "good". Not fantastic, but definitely enjoyable.

I think the production values are very high, the direction was competent, but that the writing was a little on the weak side, specifically in certain episodes (like episode 4). If they're looking to compete with the likes of Game of Thrones, they need to find better writers. I especially didn't like how inconsequential Ciri's plotline was. Her entire season can be summed up as "Escaped Nilfgaardians -> Found Geralt". Didn't help that the final episode was basically Yennifer's show, so the meeting of Geralt and Ciri at the end had less impact than it should have.

I'm also not really a fan of them going for this triad of lead characters. IMO they should have focused on Geralt. But if anything Yennifer had more of a fleshed out story. And considering her character isn't really that likeable for a good 2/3 of the season, that was a problem. Perhaps she'll be better after Sodden.

As for the acting, I think it was really good. Ciri, Triss and Yennifer met my expectations. And I liked Cavill's interpretation of Geralt, even though it doesn't exactly match my idea of him.

Overall I think season 1 was a success and I look forward to season 2, especially if they can find some better writers.

Just like the game, the series takes time to get into, no matter if you roughly know what's going on or not. The did a really poor job at signposting that all the episodes play at different timelines, with the mother of Ciri, Pavetta, looking so similar to her that I was totally lost when she got married to a hedgehog knight. In general I love the tone of the movie between brutality and humor, but especially when you have played the third game, you'll find the colour of the series a bit flat and bland. The world painted in the books and games was very beautiful and colourful in its glory (Toussaint) or misery (Vellen). Here it looks mostly meh. Good work on books adaptation, amazing performance from actors, interesting to watch at all. Series got minor disadvanteges, hovewer more good things. Witcher doesn't deserve all this hate from another "angry internet army warriors, ahrrrr". It just nice, brave enough with violence and universe from Anjey Sapkovsky book series. Hope to see season 2, peace everyone and calm down.

I too had some minor issues w/ the casting but wow, Anya Cholotra has been fantastic as Yennefer. Triss isnt in it much, her actress is fine but not sure why they changed her look so much, she is well known for her red hair through the books and games, but no biggie though I expect her role to grow substantially. Ciri, well again the actress is good but her character is not very fleshed out in the first season so we will see. The biggest issue with the show is that if you have no previous Witcher knowledge, be it the games or books I can totally understand you being lost more often then not. I am also not sure how I feel about the Time jumps or more how they showed it or actually didn't show them etc. All in all though its a really good show, I really enjoyed it though I wish the first season was a few episodes longer.

Totally understand some of the negativity and makes sense, totally do not understand some other parts of the general negativity. The racial tensions exist within the canon itself and is a constant point of contention humans vs elves vs dwarves vs monsters vs mages vs queens vs kings vs women vs men and so on and so forth. For everyone who has the capability to separate themselves from the political road-maps of our current generation there is good-slow story telling and some amazing portrayals of beloved characters and I urge everyone to make up their own minds after completing the show, positive or negative experience from your own minds and not from what everyone says how you 'Should' feel.

    The Good
I have only played The Witcher 3, neither the books nor the first two games have any influence on me and also neither does racial representation and or political agendas, unless I get it forcefully shoved down my throat without some form of organic reason for it existing.
The only things that give my joy a pause while watching a story being told is unskilled actors, writers, editors and directors. So believe me when I say I absolutely hated Cavill in Man of Steel and the movie itself more so on a storytelling level.
But after watching Count of Monte Cristo and Fallout I believed that maybe my insipid taste for Cavill was not for his acting. I am happy the Character of Geralt was where my misconceptions of Henry being a bad actor were totally resolved.

I do not know if there is some post recording artificial modulation to his voice but it is as if Doug Cockle leaped out from the game and took on Henry's form as Geralt of Rivia, his grunts his sighs his inflections and the single worded "F#CK's" were some of the best moments. Geralt/Henry is the absolute best thing about this show and I say this on all levels from his character writing, dialogue writing and appearance which means hats off to the costume department. The casting for everyone else was well done and based on what I saw did not feel forced due to beliefs or agendas, everyone who played their roles played them well and did so with passion which always bring out the best in everything.

The show itself is well written and slow thankfully taking it's time setting up the frankly vast sea of world building that exists for the franchise. The direction as well is competent as well as decent cinematography hold this show up along with the aforementioned Geralt portrayal.

    The Bad
A few things a bit lacking though and I believe this would be solved with some more finesse, some of the editing is a little bit lacklustre especially during the battle scenes. It is clear that Henry has spent time with swords for this portrayal but it always seems that the cameras keeps shying away from the battle scenes couple this with some not so great editing for these scenes make the eventual gory finishers not as satisfying. Some of the pacing also drops at certain places but spends some time fleshing the characters out which makes it acceptable. The whole two timelines thing was a bit jarring in a few places as you are not too sure of the time frame for what is happening but this is minute since the climax episode brings it all to an end in a way that sorts this out.

Without a doubt, my favorite chapter was the first one, it's great.

The music is perfect. The battle scenes are brutal. The special effects ... comply.

It seems to me a good adaptation, although they have modified elements and the order of events.

It is possible that many people get lost because of the unusual way of telling the story (temporary leaps into the past, and into the future). There may even be spectators who get bored ...

I want to mention also the great work of dubbing in Spanish (Spain). I liked it a lot.

Although I know that not everyone will like it, I recommend it.

Apart from that, yeah great start. Give me more of it. Characters are all likeable, the world feels a long way from black and white and production values seem excellent.
There is room for this show to grow into what it should be. A faithful recreation of the story and feeling of the world of The Witcher, even if your casting was driven from a less-than-faithful narrative to turn the story into something it wasn't.

The Dandelion is fantasy Ed Sheeran which is hilarious, and the music written for him is a highlight of the show for me. Also I wish the show didn't squish all of the timelines together, I read the books and it left me really confused at first, and my gf who doesn't know about the universe had zero idea of what's going on and I had to explain a lot which is not ideal for a show.

I thought the acting was good, costumes were in par with how it is in the game not really the same but it is there. Though the way the story was depicted i was lost a bit at when Geralt's and CIri's story line was happening until i understood how it was i guess that could've been shown better or at least given a time of when things were happening; but still i liked the whole series a lot. I would re-watch the whole thing again and wait for more episodes to come out or next season we will see. Expand

Its not a 1 to 1 from the books- wich is good so people who read em can still watch it- BUT it can be very confusing and outright dumb at times. Can be confusing for viewers new to the witcher lore etc. The eefects are not the best and some could be way better but in general thy are good enough.
When they learn from the mistakes of the first season it could be a good show.

I played all the games, never read the books. I think the show is great. After you make it through the pilot, it gets better continuously. Cavill nails it! The characters are well written and performed for the most part. The setting looks fantastic. Some of the CG are mediocre. The only thing I hate is Dandelion's haircut...

Pretty good series about The Witcher`s Universe.
Too underrated, but it has a lot of disadvantages:
    - Strange casting (black elves and Vigo, Triss-romal)
    - Too much unspoken and too much unnecessary
    - Nilfgaardian armor

But, in summary, The Witcher is fine and **** for fans and geeks.

A solid 8. The only thing off-putting is the timeline shift from character to character. I can't wait for the next season!

As a mindless fantasy rollercoaster, Geralt’s journey is five stars all the way to tea-time. Sadly, for those who like brains with their brawn, it may be more of a slog.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
