This is not Lord of the rings, neither is it Game of throne. It is not about epic battles, and that is fine.
It is another tale, and that is a good thing, right?

Does it have a problem with the casting? No, I do not think so even though this Triss does not look like the Triss I am used to. From an acting point of view they all do their job.
Does it have a forced diversity problem? Honestly I do not know enough about the world itself to know how common dark skinned people are in the northern countries of this setting. However, I am not annoyed by it.
Are the Nilfgard armor ugly as **** Yes, and the person who suggested it and the person who said ok to it should be fired.

A surprise hit for me. I loved Witcher 3 and read a bit from the books and I definetly recommend this if you enjoyed the lore and story from any of the games, obviously if you read the books also. If your not a fan of fantasy medieval inspired shows then you will probably not enjoy this.

Don't listen to review critics. 53/100 really? Are you serious?! Entertainment weekly 0/100?! I think that a 2 years old child has a better objective sense than these last "critics". Great acting, great story, great music, great action scenes. Keep up the good work, Netflix.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

For a long time fan like me, I was able to pickup on it very quickly, but i feel like newcomers might not understand what's going on if they aren't paying enough attention. Even so, with all these plots going on in different time periods, it ties together very nicely in the second half. For fans of literary excellence, i haven't read the books, but congrats on taking a chance on a literary work that has been so long in the making, reaching casual viewers, and any amount of an often times volatile gaming community.

The characters are good. Likes, dislikes, stengths, weaknesses, believable. My first qualification, aside from all that, the concepts attempted to be portrayed. Deep concepts such as, religion, apathy, popular belief, and survival. To a lesser extent, human empathy, very represented, but more veiled than any. Any empathy displayed is coming from the one you'd least expect it, and isn't explicitly verbally acknowledged, but shown over and over with little to no applause within narrative. That leads me to the main appeal of the Witcher universe, in my opinion, or at least, what i think most people got wrong about it, and the rest is up to you, and that is...

Heroes don't look like heroes, weaponizing religion has consequences, and destiny, is hard, and doesn't make sense, for those going through it. Powers beyond us are being used to manipulate nations, and the populace. Not really controversial in saying so.

The story is those in the middle, the heroes, victims, bards, and mages, forming it all into a history that is worth retelling.

There is lots of world building and heavy lore so you have to pay attention but it's worth taking in every bit of the Witcher world as it's excellent. It's sexy and mature. The action is gritty and raw with gory violence, sprinkled with some cool magic. The only small negative is the slow pace of the first episode but every episode after just gets better and better. All the sets are quality, the locations are epic and while the CGI isn't the greatest it still looks premium for TV. Henry Cavill is awesome, he plays the brooding, fearless, sarcastic witcher Geralt brilliantly. The supporting cast put in rock solid performances and their characters are fleshed out more than I expected going in. It's not all about Geralt, other characters are given ample time to shine. The show takes it's time to let scenes breath, even with the season only being 8 hours. The casting is fantastic, the acting is glorious and so is the set and costume (apart from the nilf armour). Henry is a great Geralt, and he understands the sides of Geralt. Even the humorous ones.

First of all I have to mention that I am quite the Witcher fan myself. I have read all the books and played all the games several times. As it was evident that Netflix is really putting effort into this and Sapkowski himself was part of the team so I had quite the high hopes. But still it was able to positively surprise me. Even more so now that I have watched the whole season 1 twice.

The series follows books pretty closely. There are a lot of added info on Yennefers back story during the early episodes which I found to be very good to flesh her out as a character. In the end she is one of the 3 main characters in the books and in them she kind of just comes out of nowhere and her backstory is only mentioned as a side note. I think that was something her character actually lacked in the books considering how important one she is. Anya Chalotra also does fantastic job as her. I found her performance excellent especially in the later episodes.

After that additional story part the series follows the books very closely. Some things do seem to be left a bit vague compared to books which I would attribute to the limitations of the medium compared to books. So many things have to be left unsaid to fit a book into a video format. The most important themes are there though and it is made clear that it is not just the story of Geralt, but his family; himself, Yennefer and Ciri. That might be why some people who only have played the games have seem so critical of the series. In the books and as a result in the series Geralt is A point of view character, not THE point of view character. That is totally the opposite in games so the storytelling is very different.

I was wondering before the show came out how are they going to implement the short stories from the books and be able to tell a coherent story. They do have to do a lot of timejumping which might be hard to follow sometimes for people not familiar with the books. Especially since they added the early story of Ciri already to the series 1. I am happy to say though that they do manage to do it pretty well. They have a lot of little overlapping scenes to show what part of the timeframe it is and which scene is related to what and it is often easy to see things happen in the past because certain people are still alive. And it all comes together pretty nicely in the end and everyone end in the same moment so it is easy for them to start series 2 and the Ciri epic for good. The timing will be much easier in the following seasons.

All in all I was very happy with how the series turned out. The team does show clear care and respect towards the original stories of mr. Sapkowski and they did a very worthy adaptation.

P.S. Some people seem to have issues with the races of some of the cast. There are black people in the world of the Witcher from the beginning, namely the Zerrikanians. Zerrikanians who are right next to the Empire of Nilfgaard and whose mercenaries Nilfgaard is known to use en masse. So how there would not be any black or mixed race people in the Empire? That would just not make any sense. The Zerrikanian units are in the Nilfgaard deck in gwent for god sake.

EDIT: Bumped up my user score to 10 because all of the crybabies giving it a 0 because they watched one episode and there was a black man in it. Such a horror! My honest score would be an 8.

I have played the games and read all the short stories. Most of the episodes are based on the short stories and therefore it was a lot easier for me to follow what was going on. In addition, the season contains time jumps within episodes without even making it clear to the viewer that is what is happening. This along with a lack of exposition about the world can make it difficult for someone new to the witcher to fully comprehend just how important some of the events they are seeing are to the world of the show. It would have been helpful if the writing had more world building in it for people who have no background knowledge about the witcher universe. The violence may be a bit too intense for some and this is not a show where people usually get to live happily ever after. All in all I think its worth watching the show and the more you learn about the world of the witcher the more it will all start to make sense and begin to click. I gave a score of 10. The show is worth a 9 but unfortunately you have people leaving zeros (there is no way a zero is justified) which just screws up the overall rating system Expand

It's not bad. Of the minor flaws in the nylph armor. Of the major shortcomings, the chronology of events. But in general, the series came out very, very good. Fighting is good, the music, though average, but in the context of video works not bad, the characters are curious to follow. And if there's anybody who's gonna edit the alternate chronology, it'll be great. I'd give you 7 out of 10.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
