The reality is that fantasy stories are based on the distant past so generally you wouldn't have different races in a small isolated village. So essentially it is something that is forced into the plot as opposed to making sense within a plot. Game of thrones dealt with race in a different way, a way that made sense.. Anyway I'm no closet racist, like I suspect a lot of these reviews have been written by or obsessed with Tolkien lore purity my rating is about the 2 episodes I have seen so far. I didn't like the first episode, especially the scene where a troll is killed by Galadriel, instead of showing her being a good leader and working to fight to face the threat there is a ridiculous scene where the 2 main protagonists do some circus trick to kill the beast while essentially Elven Special Forces are killed because they are not the main characters?! It's lazy and bad writing. The second episode improves more so because it takes advantage of the enormous budget to show some very impressive Hollywood quality scenes but again it's let down by bad writing, and odd design decisions, the Dwarves are just ridiculous, the ridiculous fake Irish accents of the proto Hobbits are pathetic, I literally heard one actress slip from RP (posh English) to a terrible Irish accent in one sentence, the directors are clearly all American and have no ears for authentic accents. LENNY Henry, the Iranian actress as well as the man who plays the Sylvan Elf are standouts in that their acting seems authentic even if they don't have much to go on in terms of dialogue however I can honestly say that I did not like the acting of any of the other characters especially the main protagonist and don't start me on the Dwarves,I hope this improves, I would recommend that people who enjoy flashy special effects, children or people who just want a bit of mindless escapism to watch this, but considering the source material and the budget this is a major disappointment which pales into significance in comparison to the Game of Thrones prequel which is well acted and character driven as well as actually making you think and remember scenes.. My problems are mainly with the acting and the dare I say ridiculous stereotypes used in the film which make a lot of scenes ridiculous to watch. Expand

This Amazon bastardization isn't genuinely Middle Earth inspired, it's a pollution of that Lore. Additionally, the writing and plot is weak. There are some nice visuals, but the costumes, and character depth is very lack luster.

I appreciate the choice of Lady Galadriel, as she resembles the Jacksons' one in her visage (albeit if not in her behaviour). You can see the monetary value in its visuals (despite the characters appearing separated from their environment), but it is a soulless husk.

note: I hope I will have to change my review with the coming of new episodes, but I have my doubts...

I honestly don't care about the diversity but It is pretty cringe when its so obvious when its purposely placed to check a box or quota. And for the ppl saying its getting review bombed by users, NO. Its getting the opposite by the critics because of the diversity they don't want to say anything bad about it because of the main female lead (whos a pretty bad actress) and the ppl of color. The mainstream critics will not say a bad word about it because of that and that alone. Its a real shame. Expand

I really wanted to like this show. As someone who has studied and written about the interplay between different mediums, and as a lifelong Tolkien fan, I was excited to see what Amazon Studios would offer.

That said, I am extremely disappointed. One would not think this is the ‘most expensive TV series of all time’. Where did all the money go? It doesn’t take half a billion dollars to pump out some impressive CGI. For writing, wardrobe and props, story development, and casting, it looks like they spent the bare minimum.

At first viewing, the impressive visuals serve to obscure the bad writing, but after you’ve had time to let it sink in, you realize how poor it is. You have little parables, like the already infamous ‘floating boat’ scene, that are stretching for profound meaning but fall far short and end up confusing. It’s the equivalent of a poorly written comic book or school play. Then there is writing that is lazy or out of place in an ancient/mythic setting. Think use of the word, ‘ok’, or Elrond’s cutesy, “why didn’t you say so.” Or, “you smell like an orc” (do ethereal being like elves stink?). I thought some of the best writing came in the Harfoot scenes (‘The Sky is Strange!’), but they are all speaking those lines with an odd southern Irish accent.

The wardrobe, sets, and props are of inconsistent quality, at best. Some costumes are passable, some look like they were 3D printed and made out of plastic or cheap metal. Again, at first viewing some of the sets look fantastic, but later you realize they felt sort of empty and lifeless, like you could tell they were shot in a warehouse studio. The hair choices for the elves is baffling. Why anyone thought it was appropriate to feature barbershop fades, buzz cuts, and pompadours with copious hair product is beyond me. Bear McCreary’s score is passable but does not thus far have the range and grandeur of Howard Shore’s LOTR. The acting is also a confusing mixed-bag. Once again, at first viewing it seems passable, but something still feels off. Only upon second viewing or later reflection do you realize that the elves (especially Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel) are wooden and expressionless. If you compare with the acting in Jackson’s LOTR, it is crystal clear that the acting quality is simply not there in Rings of Power. One might be tempted to think that elves are supposed to be stoic and expressionless, but this could not be further from the truth! The truth is elves are supposed to more human than humans, almost, express more, emote more, simply be more bright and divine than humans ever could be. Peterson’s original trilogy did a fantastic job at capturing this, while Amazon studios failed miserably.

The casting follows the general theme of: wtf were they thinking? The supreme controversy, both contrived and genuine, about diverse casting is the least of the show’s problems. Though there have been perfectly valid arguments that inclusivity could have been artfully done through Rhun (analogous to Asia in Tolkien’s universe) and Harad (analogous to North Africa) storylines that intersected with those in Middle Earth and Numenor. As it stands, it is awkward and cheap tokenism, which used to be considered offensive to people of color.

Again, elves are supposed to have a timeless quality about them. In this show, Galadriel and Elrond look about forty human years younger than Celebrimbor, while all three are thousands of years old at this point in the story. Elves are supposed to be the fairest and most beautiful beings, some of whom seem to almost emit a holy light. The Rings of Power producers failed miserably at capturing this quality. Furthermore, where are the top class actors? Half a billion dollars couldn’t manage to bring in any recognizable actors?

The plot is jarring at times because there are simply too many events that flatly defy logic. In the first two episodes, a character jumps off a ship in the middle of a huge ocean with the prospect of swimming at least a thousand miles to land with no plan or guidance. Characters are shown arriving at a destination hundreds of miles away without equipment, guides, or horses, as if they got there while taking a leisurely morning stroll. Supposed elite elven warriors are made into hapless bowling pins for an ice troll. These add up and really hinder the ability to suspend disbelief. All this ultimately amounts to a humongously baffling missed opportunity. Seriously, it makes almost no sense! It seems like this show was rushed to the cutting room floor without any edits, reshoots, or recastings. One can only surmise that the producers thought they could ride the wave of goodwill that the Lord of the Rings name carries without putting the care, time, and hard work necessary to create a good final product.

I really don't think I'll make it through this season or any other season after it. Thankfully we have the films and books. If this is your first foray into Middle Earth I cannot stress enough, start with the books (or audiobooks) and then the films, and skip this. This is just bad television. The show moves as slow as molasses, the script is incoherent and the characters of all poor reflections of themselves from Tolkien’s original works.

Bref, quelle grosse daube !

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to give this show a chance, but holy Hobbit, what a mess! And since some trolls have destroyed the positive ratio of all most helpful negative reviews on Metacritic in just a few minutes, only one thing helps - to resubmit again! Where to start? Elves whose hairstyles are reminiscent of a poorly made Pop music video from the 80s and for whom actors have been cast who don't look like immortals at all. Plus: A one-dimensional main character who, miles away from the shores of Middle-earth, goes for a swim in the biggest plot hole since the penultimate episode of the final season of Game of Thones - and who, thousands of years later, still behaves like a defiant child whose self-made paper ship has just been sunk. For whom nothing is at stake at any time, because this very special elf is able to kill a troll in 30 seconds, which took Legolas and the Fellowship almost ten minutes in the mines of Moria. Infantile Harfoots, whose scenes are sometimes reminiscent of a sitcom from the 50s, but where you wait in vain for the laughter to fade in in the background. And when two elves, without provisions, without horses and above all - without any presentable delegation, walk miles to get an audience with a dwarf prince and one of them (who, by the way, is the most important blacksmith in Middle-earth) must simply turn around to make the long, arduous journey back...then, dear viewer you truly wonder whether this Is High Fantasy or a Brigand's Tale.

Fortunately, it turns out that the diverse cast, which some "so-called trolls" have questioned in advance, cannot and will not have any influence at all on this review. How could it, given that we live in an age in which heated discussions are justifiably triggered when historical or fictional films are not cast with appropriately ethnically correct leading actors because people want to renounce the "white-whashing" of times past. It is anything but politically correct and respectful to miscast, for example, Scarlett Johannson in the live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime masterpiece "Ghost in the Shell" or John Wayne as Genghis Khan. Who would think of casting Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan with Caucasian actors, like in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"? And just to make it absolutely clear: I think that's a good thing! But why do the opposite here? Especially when you know in advance that the majority of Tolkien fans seem to worship all his works as "history" with almost religious zeal.

Leaving aside the pointlessness of such a discussion: not everyone will have the opportunity to see the first two episodes in the cinema on a big screen, so that at least some of the really great images can unfold their effect. And this despite the fact that the CGI effects are unfortunately clearly perceived as such and some things look like ultra-graphic settings in a computer game. But if, like most people, you can only watch the whole thing on a normal TV, then the sheer glamour of this big visually blown-up nothingness fades very quickly and you focus on what really makes a good TV series: A compelling script with main characters that you can and want to sympathise with. Unfortunately, the vast majority here is reduced to a moderately written soap opera full of clichés. And no - I don't expect the quality of the whole thing to improve significantly, at least not in the first season, but I sincerely hope for a more differentiated development of the main protagonists in the future - especially that of a certain person.

In the end, all that remains for me is the realisation that this is probably more of a retelling of the fairy tale "The Emperor's New Clothes". Only this time, the majority of critics praise the sheer finesse and epic grandeur of the "outfit", whereas the majority of hardcore fans will put it more honestly: "The emperor isn't wearing anything at all!"

Amazon, in its wisdom, decided that it was only necessary to secure the rights to the appendices of The Lord of The Rings and hire a bunch of talentless woke hacks from Bad Robot/Secret Hideout in order to create a new work based on Tolkien's characters. The result, as one might expect, is the typical unwatchable garbage that these kinds of people consistently produce. Who is Rings of Power supposed to be for? It's too slow and boring for children, too inauthentic for Tolkien fans, and too stupid even for normies. There are no famous or highly-regarded actors, so how is it possible that they spent a billion dollars making this? The dialog is trite, the acting is terrible, the characters dull as dishwater, the plot and pacing are yawn inducing. The woke feminism and forced diversity sit uneasily in a setting in which they don't belong. The direction is uninspired and cheap, with dialog often delivered in close-up and fight scenes choppily edited to mask the lack of choreography and ability of the actors. The Rings of Power is just another defilement of popular culture by today's woke Hollywood. It deserves to fail, and fail hard. Expand

I really had high hopes for this show. Bringing to tv a new aspect of middle earth history.
The show is beautiful, expensive. The characters and their dialogues are blend and empty. This is not a story of the Second age of middle earth. They do not even respect the chronology written in the appendices of the Lord of the Rings. I wanted to witness the forging of the rings as Tolkien envisioned it. This is a bad fan fiction mixing timelines and events, rewriting characters' stories. I am sad.

Where to start with this abomination? The worst writing I have ever encountered this side of the WB. "A stone sees only downward." Ya, that is why stones sink. How deep and profound. It is filled with junior high level, YA writing. They try so hard to be deep, but have no understanding of philosophy or metaphor. Again, junior high writing.

How about that troll fight? Wow. Apparently the show runners are big fans of anime or video games. She mashed x at exactly the right time in that fight for the dodge and finishing move. No sweat, just wanted to sit there for a little while watching her troops get chucked around to humble them a little, I suppose. She certainly is one tough bird. I mean, hell, she basically swam the equivalent of the Atlantic Ocean. What is a troll compared to that? And her motivation for the centuries of suffering, looking for the hidden enemy? She's upset. She wants revenge. Such a one note character.

How about the visit to the dwarves? Just a few minutes walk away, no need for gear or a wardrobe change. Challenging someone to the sacred right of rock smashing will always get you in the door. How idiotic. This show is a death by a thousand cuts. Hair styles, wardrobe, acting, directing. Everywhere it sucks, but the writing is the biggest downfall. 2 hours in and I care not one bit about any of the characters. I'm starting to root for Sauron. Hopefully he can kill all the characters and put this show out of it's misery.

You know that Amazon knows it sucks when they have to take away the ability to rate the show, and has their company, IMDB, not allow reviews under 6 stars. Sycophantic "professional" reviewers trying to kiss Amazon ass and saying all the legitimate criticism are just a bunch of racist trolls will only deflect attention from this actual failure for so long. Your empire is crumbling, Bezos. Pull the plug on this mess while you still can. Admit it was a mistake, you will be more respected for it.

The director, the scriptwriters and the actors, none of them are fans of Tolkien, the actors mostly live giving interviews and never quote Tolkien. This series is an aberration, it should never have been created.

They created characters unnecessarily.

Shortened the timeline.

They completely changed Galadriel history and personality.

They exchanged ethnicity of characters/races.

They should have created something without using Tolkien name, it would have been better, because this could be anything, it’s just not LOTR.

Really Amazon? You think by deleting bad reviews your bloated abomination of a show would be saved?

People are aware so better revaluate your strategy because gaslighting your audience doesn't work anymore.

Imagine a reality where a 'Game of Thrones' spinoff is MILES more compelling (as of now) than the most expensive show of all time.

The sets look (sometimes) great. That's it. The acting is flat, the charactrrs are frustrating, GUYladriel is insufferable and the wtiting (you know, the foudation of a story) is catastrophic.

Congratulations! You baught an ip!
Now you feel what happens when you smear its name and what it stands for.

Tolkein fans will keep going. This will NEVER go away.

If only you've respected his legecy.

The show looks mostly good, yes, but the pacing is bad, camera work is dull (there is pretty much no narrative behind shots). Character introductions are absent, amount of exposition is enormous, leading to believing that shows thinks that the audience is stupid and can't understand things from context. Everything needs to be explained, even if the explanation makes no sense for the characters as they either know it already (the moment when Elrond is telling Celembrimor what Silamriles were) or there is no possible way of them knowing things (Galadriel being Sherlock Holmes in the Sauron`s stronghold). The show has lots of silly moments like the fight with a troll when only Galadriel was able to solo kill it, even though the Party was in search of Sauron, so I wonder how they wanted to deal with him if the ice troll is such a problem. Or when Galadriel chooses to jump ships and swim all the way back by herself, even though is hundreds of miles away from the Middle-Earth. I understand that showrunners wanted to make her badass with all of these "creative" decisions but it really made her silly. What is also visible is that writers couldn't write intelligently conversations to make people look wise and eternal, so they chose to either force poetics in every dialogue in a way that sounds more like a recitation than conversation, or to make everyone else stupid, so that main characters would shine.

Not to mention other Lore-breaking moments like no Celebor, Warrior-Galadriel, time condensation, two Durins at the same time, Meteor-Man, elves looking more like Wither's elves than Tolkien's, hobbits in Second Age. So far my favourite characters are Arondir and Disa, so hopefully, my opinion about the quality and lore-breaking problems won't be marked as racist. Overall, it is just sad.

Travelling in general is with a snap of the fingers. ( think of Indiana Jones on the plane without the cross fade of him sleeping) IMDB is not allowing reviews below a 6 Amazon owns IMDB. ( Just saying) 1/10 purley for some of the visual shots Expand

It has the usual modern woke agenda you often see in low quality tv shows and movies. It has poor casting, poor acting, poor direction, poor script writing, poor action scenes and an extremely poor story structure. Perhaps the biggest failure of all, is that it claims to be true to Tolkien's setting, but this could not be further from the truth, it completely and utterly fails in every way possible to be true to Tolkien's creation. This is not the immersive story that I’ve come to know and love from this series. This is just horrible acting with some just ok CGI.

Otherwise you don't have the right to call it "The Lord of the Rings" or to say that actions are taking place in the very same world! I strongly disapprove how authors of the series butcher one of the most favorite worlds of my childhood for the sake of political and social agenda. This is outrageous, such people should be restricted from taking part in movies and series production! Expand

She only has one note and that is unpleasant. It doesn’t help that the face that she shows is completely contrary to the character of Galleriaal that millions of people already are familiar with and have come to know and love. And I don’t have a clue what they’re trying to do with the accents here. It’s another disjointed mess that doesn’t really seem to make any logical sense. Are the hobbits Irish now? And why are they all hobos?

To me the elves do not act elf like. They do not seem or act like elves. They’re acting like humans with human motives and human behavior. Like I’m watching a very expensive cosplay. This makes most of the oven characters feel very forced and false. Nothing will take you out of the feeling of middle earth like seeing little elf bullies. Why does every heroic female character now have to be bullied as a child? Not only is it trait but it takes away from the grandiosity of Lady Galadriel‘s character. Her fighting like a common soldier also does this as she is one of the most powerful beings in middle earth. It’s not that she couldn’t use a sword it’s that she never needed to. again it’s this attempt to make a Elves seem human that takes me out of the story and makes middle earth seem like a generic fantasy.

The dwarf soever were appropriately to work like. In fact they were the only characters I liked. Do you want to know who one of the best characters is, it’s Disa. Yes, all of us who have been accused of racism actually love Queen Disa. How is that for irony? I would have to say the dwarves in general are the only decent characters so far in the entire show. On the other hand Lenny Henry is absolutely terrible so I guess you can still call me racist. To be fair it’s hard to separate who is delivering a bad performance because of the material they have to work with. This script is dry as the appendices from which claims to derive its inspiration. I was falling asleep and honestly I couldn’t finish the second episode. There was nothing in this series to compel me nothing for me to get excited about. well that’s not entirely true I was giving a little bit excited in the wrong directions seeing all of the elements of the show that were absolutely contrary to what Tolkien wrote. I’m not talking about cast I’m talking about the actual mythology of middle earth. The stories about what happened and who did what. They had a great guide to follow and yet they felt the need to change everything. In the end it we are left with a generic fantasy which is not all that exciting that has Tolkien‘s name on it. It’s very disappointing. Compare this:
“ you have not seen what I have seen“ Ugg!

seen”. “There’s a hole here. I must go down in to see what’s inside” “Why?” “ to see what’s inside.”
“ True creation requires sacrifice“- wtf?

To this:
“Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."

I wonder if these guys really think they can write. To attach Tolkien‘s name to this vapid dialogue is laughable.
