Slow start to this series but it picks up wonderfully! Lots of Tolkien fan-bois ripping this apart on ratings, it's honestly pathetic. So far it's been a great show and looking forward to more!

Terrible dialogue, slow, boring and hookless. It doesn't follow the lore. Actual characters are mischaracterized. The acting is mediocre to bad. This is just a terrible show overall.

To quote the legendary John Mcrenroe. 'You cannot be serious?'
Oh wait, I just quote a hugely succesful white man, eek! How dare I do that!
I dread to think what state the woke writers of this show are in. Yes they have money, but do they have the respect of their peers? Do they have self-esteem? I doubt it.
If any of them don't like what I've written, please reply or get in touch. This show is not Lord of the rings and doesn't make any sense. Avoid.

Terrible cast of actors. Curve gluing of frames and installation. All the actors are terribly overdoing it. Disgusting dialogues. Plot. Galadriel is shown as a mentally unstable character. Delusional behavior of minor characters. There is no adequate explanation of the global issues that are in the plot.

I sincerely feel sorry for the real fans of the Lord of the Rings.

Review after Ep. 6:
The biggest hook of the series is the visuals. Especially the design of orcs, various armor sets, the Haarfoots and Numenor is just terrific. Often times the series hits that LotR feeling with epic landscape shots and well cut montages. Another highlight is the dynamic between Durin and Elrond which is very reminiscent of Gimli and Legolas. While many feel the dialog to be cringy, I do think it delivers that Tolkien feeling quite well. The story takes its time to develop, with a bit too much time spent in Numenor (especially ep. 5 feels a bit redundant), but I still think the pace is adequate.
The biggest downside is the issue of certain developments feeling rushed. You're meant to believe the damaged friendship between Durin and Elrond to be fully mended, when actually not enough time has passed for that to happen. Or you're meant to believe the chancellor's son and Elendil's daughter falling in love, when in actuality they just met. Other times it feels like certain scenes are left out and you're expected to connect the dots yourself.
All in all it's a great watch though and I'm excited for each new episode.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here is the positive I have to say:
The show definitely invested a lot of effort into making the environment look good; The scenes of the mountains, lakes, rivers, and landscape shots do look good. I enjoyed Robert Aramayo's performance, I think he's doing a good job. Lloyd Owen's performance is also enjoyable to watch. The Last positive thing I have to say is that they occasionally make this show feel like Middle-Earth.
Negative:
I have a lot of negative things to say about this show but i'll sum them up in two broad strokes: First, while the show has a good story on paper, they have executed it horribly so that the story doesn't make sense. Second, while the show has a handful (a very small handful) of positive moments, the negative ones far outnumber them and they take you out of the show, ruining what few good things the show had going for it. What do I mean by this? Well, for one thing the dialogue is particularly bad to the point that you have to backtrack to understand what is being talked about, removing you from the story. You end up asking yourself "why?" at different points rather than "wow". As the story on paper seems good, the writers went about executing it terribly. For example: In the sixth episode, it's not a bad idea to bring the tower down on the heads of the Orcs to stall them; this is a good idea on paper. However, an ancient elven tower that can be brought down by burning a single rope that held up a single piece of metal that was holding the whole tower together, is not a well executed idea. And the show has so many moments like these spread from the first episode to the last one that I find myself scratching my head and wondering "why?" more often than I find myself saying "that's cool".
Overall, I rated this show as a 2 because it has a couple good things going, but the negatives keep me from really enjoying it, taking me out of the story, thus getting a bad score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Three episodes in and nothing of note happened, we have four separate storylines going super slow. Still world building and introducing new characters. Im not knowledgable at all about the lore but even to me some of it seems of, especially some of the designs.

WHere did the budget go? there are a few beautiful CGI shots of cities and thats it. The sets look plain bad and even some CGI(dagger lying on the boat at the end of E1...) just horrendous.

This is some average TV and doesnt really feel like LOTR

Update after E6 - Where did the budget go?? CGI only?? the battle for Southlands had 40 people vs 40 orcs in a fight over a village which has 5 buildings. WTF?!
Numenoria, the biggest human civilization had only 5 ships total? two destroyed so can only send three now, what a joke. I was trying to enjoy this as an epic fantasy show but its not epic at all.

The worst writing on any show I have seen - bad acting, bad casting, bad costumes, bad continuity…..

I just don’t see where the money went - the CGI is ok but is only on par with much lower budget efforts.
I have been watching it only as it is one of the best comedy shows around.
The “army” of 500 warriors + horses + armour + supplies in three tiny boats… crossing the ocean in a day…whilst wearing their armour… honestly I have not laughed so much since “THE SEA IS ALWAYS RIGHT”.
I genuinely feel sorry for everyone who had high hopes for this show, cast and crew included.
The writers, producers and directors should be ashamed, there is no love of Tolkien in this show, just a lazy exploitation of a well loved classic.

Keep your political statements out of Tolkien's lore! I'm tired of my childhood memories being destroyed by woke political **** nowadays. I'm not bothering with this show! The rings of power is just that.
Its only purpose seems to be to show financial potency.
Things look really expensive but completely lack taste and soul.
One episode after another i feel myself just kind of sitting there for another hour waiting for something. The story is so slow that it feels like they should have made another movie or two instead of a series. The characters are so bland that they become completely expendable. All of them could leave the show and i wouldnt mind.

Only well written and entertaining thing in 6 episodes was elronds and durins friendly dispute.

It's a shame to see Tolkien's legacy being used so sadly.

I would like to point out that for me I don't see any problems with the "woke" agenda. The best character so far is Durin's wife, Disa.

I tried to get my family to watch it, to maybe hear opinions from people who aren't fans of Tolkien's works and Peter Jackson's adaptations. My wife lost interest in the first thirty minutes and found the series too childish.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've never written a "review" before. This show is beautiful, has it's good moments sometimes but I'm sorry, mainly a disappointment for a lot of reasons. First, it's unlogical a lot of times. For example: Elrond swore to durin not to tell anyone about mithril. Then he proceeds to tell Celebrimbor and when Celebrimbor say he needs to tell gil-galad about mithril, Elrond say he can't broke his oath... Right after he broke his oath. These moments are annoying but let's go to another reason. In my opinion a lot of times Galadriel acts like a children. She is idk how many hundreds if not thousands years old, I expect a little maturity sometimes if your that old. In the latest episode (6) how she threats Adar at the end was cringy af. (I'll let you live bcause... then proceeds to almost kill him afeter 5 seconds of that) and I could go on... I'm sure these ppl are good actors but the writing was poorly executed... It's trying to be woke at times, but sadly it doesn't got the inpact... At least for now. This ofc is only my opinion. Sorry for the grammar, still learning. Take care Expand

Tolkien wrote the story and handed us the blueprint for a breathtaking adaptation, but for some reason, someone felt they could do better and changed an excellent story into a literal faecal mess. The lead character is so unlikeable one will begin to wonder if she is actually a hero, antihero, or villain; are we expecting a secondary protagonist later on? Expand

I am mindful that Amazon paid a lot of money to make this happen and given the current times and technicalities of what exactly they bought the rights to, I knew there would be deviation from canon (casting, non-canonical plotlines, etc) which I am fine with. I am also aware that Tolkien was a genius who spent decades shaping his world and lore and it would be quite unfair to expect writers of a TV series to match the quality work.

Yet, even with these caveats, I am completely perplexed to no end on how abysmal the writing for this series is given the reported cost per episode of about $60 million. It is so bad that no amount of fancy cgi and visual effects can mask this. I am left now wondering...where did all the money go? Is it that hard to spend a bit more on quality writing?

Here are some issues I have:
First, why would you cast a 5000+ year old Galadriel (one of the oldest elf still alive on Middle Earth at the time of the show) into the likes of a "tempestuous" teenage brat who has to be taught lessons on diplomacy from a 20-30 year old man...Really?

Second, there are simply too many storylines going on here for character development and for me to be invested in. I don't think the show so far would change at all if you dropped the Gandalf + Harfoot story line completely.

Third, I think the writers could have done much better by focusing on a few characters and explored the internal character struggles more in depth. For example, Elendil + Miriel's faithfulness in their belief in time of doubt and disavowment - why do they still cleave to the old ways? what sacrifices are they making to continue in their path? Another example could be SHOWING Halbrand's history in the Southlands and the horrible things he may have done more in depth first before meeting Galadriel instead of TELLING us. They try to do this with Elrond and Durin and Mithril but this whole plotline is not convincing to me. In contemplating some my points made above, I have to come to the conclusion that (1) such quality writing is not possible for TV. Games of Throne went to **** after they exhausted all of the source material; and (2) a faithful understanding and appreciation of the philosophy and spirit behind Tolkien's work which is Christian at its core is highly improbable in Hollywood today.

The characters are bland, lifeless vessels that cary out a boring story. The bizarre part is how they have beloved source material and maybe even more beloved Peter Jackson Trilogy to lean on. The men just hate the elves. No reason. Galadriel is a one dimensional soldier. Elrond, the brilliant leader, is banal and tactless.
The actors themselves I feel are doing a serviceable job. The dialogue the are forced to bring to life is a brutal march of exposition in which the actors do what they can to bring the miserably dead script to life.

It looks great most of the time. The first revealing of the resplendent halls of Khazad-Dum gave me hope that the show would hit its stride. But the story is ruined by an empty army of characters you can’t bring yourself to care about.
The result is a bland, water-color story hung in a beautiful frame.

The morons calling this show "Marxist" don't seem to understand this show is the product of pure end-stage capitalism.

This show has sporadic insanely good visuals, good action, and then is drowned by something that looks like a 13 year old with a camcorder back in 1999 making baby's first movie. I don't care about "muh elves aren't white and don't have long hair," the black elf is the coolest person on the show period. But everything else is bleh. How they gonna have my man whipping chains around like the coolest dude on the planet, flying around like a G, catching arrows and cucking orcs, and then Galadriel in the next shot looks like she has no health insurance and doesn't want to get hurt while swinging a lil plastic sword around?

Episode 4, Galadriel does some shuffle karate chop thing and teleports four guards into a prison cell. That was the breaking point for me. It was more entertaining to say "deez nuts" after every line of the show. It made the people watching with me laugh and not fall asleep. This show is literal peak corporate "culture," there's nothing there. Galadriel can apparently teleport up a tower wall, I guess they can't show it cause it's too expensive or whatever despite 1 billion dollarinos thrown at it.

CGI looks okay until it's terrible. Like the scenes on the boat, you can practically see the school gymnasium they filmed the "ship" in. Also how does Elrond teleport between the Dwarf kingdom and the old elf's tower, how does that work. And why does the orange light from fire look like someone photoshopped an overlay layer onto the scene. The scenes in Numenor are comical. Such a huge city with 30 extras in each scene. All that an Gal walks away with what, 120 soldiers to take on the orcs?

There are some beautiful shots for sure, extremely gorgeous stuff, but then you get scenes with pig-wolves that last all of 20 seconds before they are deleted from memory.

I can't even remember any of the character names because I literally just don't care cause they're all boring. I don't even care about the "woke" parts that these alt right incels are whining about. The diverse casting choices are actually the only ones putting in an effort ironically. Everything is reactionary these days, yes the alt right Trump idiots and "we wuz Tolkien purists" conservatives are annoying but so are the people making these shows lazily hoping to just get away with it and shooing all criticism off as the work of incels (which it may or may not be).

It's just that there's not much effort going into the writing or planning, the show feels half-finished or something I dunno. I tried SO HARD to like it, I loved the first two episodes and thought people were exaggerating with the hate. Like bro if they took the black elf and made a show about him just going around beating on orcs for 45 minutes I'd watch the sh*t out of that.

Then episode 3, 4 then 5 rolled around. I just can't.

Don't let the childish behavior of review-bombers get in your way. It's disheartening to see so many people looking to spite the show for reasons based in anger.
I went into this also with reservations, but I've found myself warming up to the series and enjoying it (though, yes, the first 10-15 minutes have some terrible writing, I'm thinking of you "stone and ship"). Visually it brings out much of the magic and splendor of Middle-earth, and while the story might be a bit slow, I don't mind taking time to get anywhere with the excellent soundtrack of Bear McCreary (the composer of God of War) lifting you along the way. Sure, it is made by Amazon and is at times inconsistent with Tolkein lore, but neither of these detract from the series as a show or experience in itself. Also, Durin is a mood and I love his character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The good: Beautiful music, good visuals, sometimes good CGI, I think the actors are mostly fine. I find the Elrond and Durin storyline quite enjoyable. The bad: Everything else. Galadriel's behavior is inexplicably both stupid and amoral. She jumps out of a boat in the middle of the ocean and attempts a swim that would take weeks at least to complete back to Middle Earth. She threatens murder on several occasions to get what she wants. The scene where she shoves four Numenorean guards (who possess super-human strength) into a cell is just embarrassing. The harfoots want to abandon one of their own due to a injured foot, despite clearly possessing cart technology. What do they do when someone is pregnant? The timeline is a total mess (I'm a huge Tolkien nerd so I know my stuff), with events thousands of years apart mixed together haphazardly. Sometimes the orcs are allergic to sunlight and other times they're fine. About half the segments are simply boring. If the meteor man turns out to be a Wizard, then it's a spectacular fail from a lore perspective (just saying). Not recommended. A big disappointment, especially considering how the writers claimed they wanted to stay true to Tolkien. Clearly what they really wanted was a fantasy show full of moral ambiguity and drama like Game of Thrones because money. I'd suggest getting a whole new writing team to dramatically correct course. Most of the characters have been completely changedThe is the best example of purposely destroying art for corrupt political/Marxist ideals, in existance. It is the polar opposite of Tolkien's vision and ruins his work at every single turn. Most of the characters have been completely changed in order to be "woke". Also, new characters were made up while important main characters Tolkien created were deleted. Races were changed, sexes were changed, the appearence of certain fantasy races were changed, the story was heavily changed, and character's personalities are completely different from what they're supposed to be. No one should be supporting this, or anything like it. The people who made it are Marxist political radicals.

Besides the fact that it's an overtly woke mess, which made a point to purposely destroy Tolkien's vision (apparently they believe they are better at writing fantasy than Tolkien), but the production values are all over the place. Some scenes look incredible while others look very poorly put together. I blame that solely on the directing. It's a directors job to oversee the entire production and make sure the final product is the best it can be. There was a big failure here, in that regard.

The acting is one of the shows weakest technical aspects, however. Some of the actors are so inept with their abilities that they come across like people who you'd find on a WB channel television show. For a 1 billion dollar budget I have no idea how the production values are as bad as they are. While they're not terrible, they're not nearly as good as anyone was expecting. Maybe it's the fact that instead of seeking out incredible talent to portray Tolkien's art accurately they, instead, focused all their efforts on trying to shoehorn in as much woke/Marxist programming as possible.
as low as they are. h of the productionva.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before I get into the show's issues, I ask anyone reading this to look to the left at the critic score, and then to the right at the viewer score. Don't you find it interesting that there are little to no negative reviews from critics? Please think about how interesting it is that people the creators have access to have nothing negative to say, even slightly negative. Please just think of that.

Watching the show and knowing anything about Tolkien's work, anything from the books to the movies, this will feel like you are being punished for knowing anything. This series cannot function with any of the events in the movies or books, as it clearly does not mean to. It is beyond clear that this show was not made by people that know anything about how this world works, instead making their own show while grave robbing the names of Tolkien.

However, I know it is likely that this review will be ignored as merely a butthurt Tolkien fan, so I will instead talk about the show itself without regard to its source material. The main character of the show is insufferable, willing to sacrifice members of how own people to chase her own personal mission- that in the view of the show is likely fruitless. She often offends and complains to those that provide her aid, yelling and insulting the captain and queen who provide her with accommodation even though they have reason to be distrustful of her. She volunteers a man to put his life on the line against his will and without his knowledge because she wants him to do something for her. The thing that makes this so bad is the fact that the show doesn't see this as wrong, the show portrays her as being in the right for doing these awful things. Next, let's talk about the actual writing as well. The story is about the return of Sauron, and the efforts of Galadriel to get people to move to try and destroy this evil. The main issue with this storyline is how watered down it is. So much of the story is fluff, that overall does not play into the overall narrative being told. The story of Adar and the Southlands is overall meaningless to the story of the forging of the rings and the return of Sauron. You may say that it shows Sauron appearing and taking over Mordor, however, it is not required for this story to be told over this length of time. We know how this story is going to end, which doesn't necessarily make it bad, it's the fact that the story wants to be invested in what is going to happen, not how. We know what is going to happen, so why is the story asking us to wonder? If you say that this is meant to show how this affects the everyday person, here's the thing, you don't need to spend this much time on it. My main proof for this is the prologue to The Fellowship of the Ring. There is a brief montage that shows Sauron laying siege to the Southlands, and that is sufficient. Here the story is the culmination of the two biggest problems of the show, it is a way to pad out time, and a way to have a mystery box. The show wastes so much time, trying to tell stories that ask "what will happen" when we know the answer, repeats storylines, adds several nonsequiturs and often has nothing stories. Then there lies the other main offense, the mystery boxes. The show constantly sets up useless mysteries that I can guarantee you will be terribly answered. This show was made by disciples of JJ Abrams and it is very clear. The story is not about telling a fulfilling narrative, but hooking you by making you wait to see what the answer to its useless questions is. "Who is Halbrand really?" oh you mean the man from the Southlands who said 'looks can be deceiving who is trying to remain in Numenor while the forces of good are away, who has a dark past with violent tendencies who loves to forge with an almost unnatural talent? Sauron. "Who is this mysterious guy who fell from the Heavens?" oh you mean the old guy with a long beard, grey hair, who wears grey robes, loves to hang around with Hobbit- I mean Harfoots, has an incredible affinity for magic, and knows the mysterious languages of birds and beasts? Gandalf. This sort of stuff is painful.

Please, do not support this trash, let it be known that we consumers expect better, and do not let the shills silence you by strawmaning you into being a Racist or something. Be smart, and be strong

Payne, I have never heard of these guys until now. their past work is unknown to me, how do you choose your writers? I watched enough tv shows and movies that I can do better than this, this show is comedy, and cringe, a lot of time while watching I was laughing, I just couldn't take it seriously, the Heros of this show look so weak and always needs the help of others, especially (Galadriel) her height: 5' 3¾" (1.62 m) IRL she reminds me of Noot from Water World for some reason, they made her a lot like Deloris from West World she is always angry and looking for revenge and like to ride horses, if watch West World you would know what I mean, and she is always mumbling when she speaks to everyone why? Every time she speaks, she mumbles, she needs to yell like a hero would. I thought this show was comedy, especially the opening scene when they are fighting the orcs and then the guy is yelling and crying and the orc just hugging him instead of stabbing him. Give it to Netflix or Disney or Parmount or some other studio they are going do much better job and hire better people for the job, I grantee you. Thank God for Amazon for providing us with these cringe worthy moment and laughable moment like they "they took our jobs". I don't remember when Elden Rings the video game came out, but the show's writer played the game and said that it is, then went and watched The Hobbit, and the LOTR Trilogies, and flipped the books and said we are ready. Also, Arondir looks so weak and doesn't have enough thinking before planning.
This show is more misogynistic more than real life for instance the human absolutely has no strong leaders, only Elves and Dawrfs, that is the only way for human women to be a leader when there are no strong men around, another instance is the queen that her dad is dying that is the only reason she is the leader because she didn't have any brothers, another example is the opening Galadriel is fighting the giant in the Icey mountain the man put his sword for her so she can jump why she couldn't jump on her own? I will let the writers answer that.
The part of this series is when Amazon ghosted Peter Jackson and then stole every idea from his movies and put it in the show, like the mounting drone shots, the swords movement, the fighting scenes, the arrows shots, and so many others, if you have watched the movies, and match the scenes you would understand the similarities they are more like copy and paste, no creativity, or anything new introduced to the table, "

But there is a professional problem with the Rings of Power TV series story and writing. The bad pace, the dull story idea (no spoilers), and of course, how Galadriel, who is supposed to be a few thousand years old, behaves like a teenager which makes her unbelievable, in regard of her age. The graphics are great. But if you compare the writing, even the jokes, to a film like, say, Fargo, you'll notice why film critics complain rather about the writing alone. So, overall, it is okay. I don't mind watching it. It's just not a good series. Expand

There is noting here apart from a extremely badly written and warped political statement. What a waste of time and money.

Looks and sounds great, but I've no idea where the story is going. Really hurts the story to make Sauron the main villain at the start since we already know they won't defeat him here.

Half the season in and I am still not sure where the power rings are going to come into the story. So far, no mention and no particular reason is given to forge rings yet. Are some of the rings for men already created?

special effects are amazing. Music is beautiful. Too many characters and overly complicated story, but it's finally picking up. Can't wait for more.

The writing is terrible, overall the show is very very boring. Acting is ok-ish mostly, the only exceptions are the actress who plays Galadriel - the main character - and the guy who plays the main elf. They both have absolutely no facial expressions and they look constipated all the time. Like the girl from Twilight. Very very stupid fight choreographies. I gave it a 1 because good CG (it does not look "50 million dollars an episode" good CG btw) isn't everything. I'd rather have a good story and interesting characters and good acting any day. Expand

Lot of fake reviews being paid, its all lobbying, just like cigarettes big pharma etc.

Another case of corporate hubris. They buy up a long established, beloved and revered franchise and just throw out the story for their own version. “Screw the author and screw the fans; we know better.”

This is by no means a zero. It's a C+ fantasy show. Folks whinging about black elves and dwarves need to realize this is what's happening. Either get on board or be left on the outside.

I'm not reviewbombing. This show is the worst show I've ever seen and I'm only 5 episodes in. I could list what's bad about it but saying that only Durin is good would be a far shorter list.
