This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only reason I give this a 1 instead of a 0 is some scenic shots are decent. Characters, plot, most of the acting are mediocre. Sauron becomes an angry incel that wants to destroy Middle-earth because Galadriel will not marry him? WHAT?! Even a kindergartener could write a better plot than that. Galadriel is one of the worst characters ever portrayed on screen, and is in total contrast to the wonderful portrayal by Cate Blanchett. Bezos should go to Tolkien's grave and beg forgiveness for this besmirchment and blasphemy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow after finishing the first season I can say what an abomination this show truly is. I would call this fanfiction, but the showrunners clearly aren't fans as they are just making up their own BS and wearing LOTR as a skin suit.Everyone and their mother knew Halbrand would turn out to be Sauron I'm actually kind of surprised with how moronic the writing is they didn't mix him up with the pterodactyl guy from X-men. The fact that in the end he turns out to be evil (or continues to be) because essentially he got shot down by Galadriel is so dumb. Also the elves are morons because even after they realize the guy telling them to forge the rings is pure evil they do it anyways. Just terrible writing in this show all around I give 2 points for the crew and VFX people and maybe a couple of the actors since they are the only people who did a good job and the show is a pretty trash fire since the plot is god awful. It's amazing the damage Bad Robot and JJ Abrams has done to the entertainment industry. The 2 show runners being hacks and former employees of JJ Abrams's infamous Bad Robot. Even shows JJ isn't directly involved with feel his cancerous touch. Amazon you need to fire these people now and stay away from anyone connected to JJ or his terrible company. Expand

I always have the books and legendarium to satisfy my love of Tolkien and is what I prefer above anything else. But this show is fun to explore and gives an imaginative perspective of Tolkienania that feels true to his spirit while giving me things to rethink some of my own entrenched ideas and imagination. All I really hope for at this point is to see a version of Tom Bombadil to show up somehow next season. Expand

No one with a **** mind will ever rate this more than a single star. Those reviews are fraudulent. All these years I had a very high opinion on the RT and MC critics. I thought they were a lot more sensible than the audience. But they revealed their true self with this. The show's demise starts with Galadriel. Unfortunately her acting is pathetic because she cannot fully open her mouth. The story line is even worse. The one thing that I really liked are the Harfoots. That little girl really knows how to act. The rest of the characters are completely lack luster. Not a single scene in the entire show is worth watching twice. I wonder how they threw so much money on this. If they had released this as a motion picture in the theaters I can bet it would have been the most expensive disaster of all times. Direction wise one could easily see the immaturity. It really starts with the selection of actors. Photography, visual effects, sound and CGI are really grand no doubt about that . Therefore the half star. Everything else is really not worth anyone's time. The only reason I began watching this show was because of the high ratings. But alas that is so not true. Its just a very bad show. Expand

This thing should never have seen the light of the day and everybody who participated in the creation of this show should be ashamed of themselves. It is the most mindless, superficial, pale, uninspired, disrespectful, and talentless media product of all time. Even in a million years I would not be able to gather all the necessary words to fully describe the disgust I feel after experiencing the Rings of Power. I can`t even start delivering a constructive criticism, because this show simply doesn`t deserve the effort. 8 episodes of sheer torture. Dialogues are simply words gathered into sentences. No substance, no purpose. Characters are just empty shells that find themsleves in situations. They don`t act like living beings. Mindless tools of the script, nothing more. Visuals - mediocre at best. The secenry flourishes with fakeness and CGI. Action/battles - just pathetic and too few for a BILLION dollar show. The plot - a giant, unfunny JOKE. I sincerely hope that the 2nd season will never ever come out. I could somehow cope with Netflix butchering The Witcher, but seeing Amazon butchering Tolkien`s meticulously crafted world is simply too much for me to bear. Expand

First thing, Im putting aside 2 facts from my score.

1- The series mostly ignores the original writing story. Its very loosely based on it, using certain places, characters and facts, but most of the content is completely "original". I don´t just mean they "filled holes" with original stuff, (thats quite needed as the tolkien writings just described this era as historic events with no real novelization wich could be portrayed on screen) But also that this "original stuff" heavily modify or even contradict those writings.
As said, my score ignores this fact, as i watched the show purely as a fiction work "loosely based" on a certain book.

2- The "diversity thing". As I´m watching the show as a completely new thing unrelated to the book, im ignoring also the complains about changing or adding certain features as elves being dark skinned, or whatever. Still there is something strange and that feels forced, and im not refering to "black elves or female black dwarfs", but to the fact that diversity is absurdly forced into nonsense. Example: The queen of Numenor being black, while al numenoreans, including her father, are white, and the fact numenoreans are also a ethnic. The same happens with the leader of the hobbits, thats still stranger as they are a relatively small and absolutely closed isolated group. Still, while it seems a weird move to pretend a specific group or society is racially diverse even when its so closed or isolated, I can overlook it as well.

So why 3?

Well, at the start the show is somewhat watcheable, and the production and screenplay is very good. The point is: the show is plainly boring. It has some interesting moments, but its quite irregular.

It also abuse the "pretended deep conversations" stuff. Somehow feels like they forced those a lot, maybe to try give it a more book or lyric feeling vibe, emulating Tolkien style, but with little success.

And lastly, the characters. Its hard to empathize or sympathize with any of them. Galadriel seems to idealized, but at the same time is quite insolent and whimsical. Halbrand starts as a somehow Aragorn clone, on aesthetics but also on its background. Elrond-During may be actually somewhat ok. The most interesting plot actually would be the one around Arondir.

So, somehow we have a show with incredible production resources, great visuals. But with a somehow generic plot, generic characters, and as much, average writing, wich feels boring after few chapters hence with some rollercoasting moments.

This show is the antithesis of The movie trilogy by Peter Jackson.
I have honestly enjoyed watching the youtube reviews of the series that are ripping it to shreds for it's lack of logic, lack of continuity, complete and utter disrespect for the lore and legacy of Tolkien more than watching the series itself.

Tolkien and his wife's tombstones in real life are marked with the names Beren and Lúthien and this show decided to take that beautiful tale and give it to Galadriel - who this show seems to completely misunderstand and misrepresent. They have made her the villain with no reputable or remarkable traits and nothing redeemable about her character. Just a sociopath dead-set on a mission to kill and doesn't care who gets in her way - elves, humans, orcs, doesn't matter - everyone must die and anyone any my way is just collateral damage.

Imagine being 2000 years old and needing to be lectured by a 30 year old human on diplomacy?

Imagine be being filled with revenge for 500 years and the second a little boy seems to have that same trait you lecture him on how it's not good for the heart to carry revenge and celebrate the deaths of others - mind you this is literally hours after she just threatened to bring the orcs out into the sun to watch them suffer or later kill all of Adar's Children in front of him so that he can feel pain before she finally kills him...but now just hours later "It is not good to have hatred or revenge in your heart or to celebrate killing evil". Honestly, WTF. The show's dialogue somehow looks like a play written that would barely make sense on Broadway - it gives you the same feeling as Anakin in Star Wars explaining that he "hates sand, it's coarse and it gets everywhere".

Almost all dialogues and scenes end with you as the viewer thinking - WTF are they serious? And then we get to the worst of it all - a character ask a question, looks to the sky, and then letters appear on the screen to answer the question like it's a Garfield Sunday newspaper comic.

The characters that die on the show have no backstory and so therefore us as viewers don't care at all, nothing is sad, nothing is happy, if fact - it's almost as if you feel sorry for the 'bad guys' throughout the whole show.

Everything that has transpired could have taken place in 2 episodes, if they had taken the extra episodes for character development, backstories, flashbacks etc. then we might would have carried some emotion with the characters but instead everyone gets about 2 sentences of 'tell not show' (which is the opposite of good storytelling) and then we are following their current timeline.

Pure waste of time, obviously a huge waste of money for Amazon prime - I hope that the Tolkien family has the right to ask Amazon to cancel the show for all of our sake.

I actually appreciate a diverse cast, but you can't substitute good writing with diversity. A good series or movie will have a diverse cast, and the viewers are so immersed that they don't even notice race or gender. The rings of power rubs your face in it. The pacing is very slow, the characters have no depth, and to make the female characters stand out, they make them loud and insufferable. They basically gave all the females masculine personalities and the males feminine personalities. This makes all of the characters unrelatable and unlikable. There is a trans person in the cast, but they are not trying to look like they've transitioned? Instead, they have a shaved head, a mans face, with boobs in a wedding dress? I'm no expert but isn't trans supposed to be transitioning into the opposite sex? The writers are idiots who think they are being edgy by pushing norms to the extremes. Instead, they've upset the whole Tolkien fan-base by corrupting the lore with their political ideologies, and piss poor writing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unlike LOTR, where each scene was memorable, a masterpiece designed to transmit a message and fill you with emotions, Rings of Power is... lacking content, to say the least. The conversations are plainly stupid. Galadriel has just one face filled with anger. I don't really care if it is just bad acting on her part or an overly simplistic character. She basically plays a spoiled brat with a temper who always throws a tantrum. I've imagined her as a wise person, managing always to avoid a fight rather than look for one with the mindset of a teenager... The show is a complete disappointment, probably the worst screenplay I have ever seen. I think that it was intended for a very stupid audience, otherwise I can't explain how it can be so bad. Only if you really want you can create such a **** otherwise you would still get some things right. Expand

Galadriel is deeply unlikeable, the proto-hobbits are psychopaths, and there don't seem to be many characters whose actions drive the story. Galadriel kind of floats around--sent to Valinor, picked up by a raft, picked up by Numenor, white-tree blossoms convince Numenor to go to war, etc. Instead of interesting characters making choices that push the story in unforeseen ways (like HOTD Rhaenyra choosing to fake Laenor's death and marry Daemon), stuff just happens and the characters float along.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Let's go! First of all,
It is always easier to criticize something than to create something yourself. One must be aware of this with every (albeit justified) criticism.
And under consideration of this maxim, I describe my impressions here.
Let's go!

First of all, one should appreciate the obvious effort with which this series was created. The setting, the landscapes, the armor, the cities; all of it is outstandingly produced.
The actors (all of them) also give a very solid performance,
the series started extremely brilliantly, catching me immediately and I was pleasantly surprised by this quality.

At this point it should not be left unmentioned that Peter Jackson made something impossible possible at the time and that he was allowed to spend more money on his films than any other studio ever before and that his project was on the brink more than once because of the horrendous and ever increasing sums.
His films had their own look and feel, he had put his own stamp on Tolkien's work, even then not without criticism. To do this, he used the works of some well-known artists who were already known and loved among fans.

A billion was spent. What a sum! However, if you take inflation into account, the two creations are no longer so far apart.

The expectations were high.

On the one hand, I was pleased that they followed the known style, on the other hand, I was disappointed that they didn't dare to create something new, something of their own. A chance to create a new style was missed.
So much for the basic look.

In terms of content, one certainly has more freedom, even if the appendices to Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion or other stories from Middle Earth throughsaus the direction.

Quite a lot of liberties were taken here. That hurts.

Now we come to the trickiest aspect of this series, namely its diversity.
Yes, this series is a child of the times. It perfectly reflects the lunacy and turmoil of our society, which allows itself to be taken over by a minority of ideologically fascist maniacs.
And so this series also follows the current, imposed narrative that in everything everyone must find themselves in some form.

As the saying goes: there is no sure way to success, only one to sure failure, namely to want to please everyone.

And so the creators reflect on this wisdom, ignore all sense and reason and desecrate Tolkien's legacy so that it may satisfy the fascists of political corectness.
To bring it to the point:
Ah... no. You know what? I am tired. I'm tired of it. I'm tired of explaining to the intellectually poor and the ideologically blinded how stupid and brazen they are.
And those who give absolution to this trash under the terse pretext of fantasy are not worth dealing with any longer than necessary.

And so I conclude with the words: shame on you!

This has to be one of the biggest acts of vandalism of original works in TV history by two Amazon charlatans clout chasing on Tolkien's name and gaslighting the fanbase.

Of course, they don't want the hardcore books fans, nor the Peter Jackson LOTR trilogy fans because they would and have pointed out the poor writing. Abysmal dialogue, constant lore breaking when they pretend to be scholars of Tolkien's work, awful pacing and editing but the worst are the portrayal of beloved characters like Galadriel. This also suffers from boredom which no CGI can mask. All this show will have as fans are shills and fake fans that is no base or foundation for a solid TV series with re-watchable content.

Very disappointed.

How in the hell can one studio, with a half a billion budget manage to deliver such p*ss poor spectacle ? It is puzzling.
We're certain the money didn't go to the casting or the writing ! Cringe inducing dialogues delivered by amateurs in the service of a snail paced plot, probably written by a 16 years old who focused way too much on shoehorning modern tropes such as ethnic diversity or the strong woman figure into the story, to a point it becomes absolutely ridiculous (and polarizingly counter productive).
And the more they try to emulate what Peter Jackson did with Tolkien's material, the more it falls flat and make this show failing miserably at being even remotely entertaining.
The ridiculous horse acrobatics of miss-clenched-teeths AKA Galadriel just definitely signaled me I was done wasting my free time with this borefest of childish gimmicks.
So I guess I'll give a point for the nice CGIs

At a base level it is boring, lacks cohesion or characters that compel the viewer to invest and care about them. Their personalities are wooden, and lack any redeeming features, and one finds oneself rooting for Sauron and the Orcs... The plot is non-sensical, everything happens in the nick of time, and is very predictable. Different storylines intersect in the most implausible fashion. It's as if the writers looked at a map of Middle Earth and decided events would take place all over it, without any consideration of the vast distances. There's no sense of grandeur, or scale that one associates with Tolkien.
As a huge Tolkien fan, I cannot fathom how anyone can enjoy this show, For casual viewers I can understand how it may seem like a half-way decent show, but at the same time, I am so disappointed. I was incredibly hopeful for this show.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The problem here is more systemic than just one show, though it definitely shows blaringly on Rings of Power given the sheer scope of the shows budget and marketing.

Fundamentally, this has to do with arrogant elitists who are self obsessed with "re-creating" society according to their own ideological concepts, and in so doing are making the intentional decision to take over and bastardize established cultural mainstays for their own purposes, it's a pure power move. This has absolutely nothing to do with Tolkien or providing an actual quality product.

I will elaborate further on my thoughts in this review after the season finale, but I am tenatively giving it a 7/10.

So far it has surprised me how interestingly they've covered parts of the Second Age so far, I am particularly excited by who I assume is going to be a Blue Wizard as they are characters I have been longing to see depicted on the big screen. I find it really exciting to see stories written for characters who were otherwise very empty in Tolkien's writing, among them being Galadriel.

The negative is that the Galadriel/Numenor point of view so far has been less interesting, I find myself just wanting to see more of the Hobbits or Dwarves. Some thing are pretty cliche, the ending of Episode 7 was pretty corny for example.

Whether I drop the rating or not will really depend on the identity of The Stranger. If it is Gandalf as many suspect, it will drop incredibly as that topples the current balance of creating something new and retaining what Tolkien established.

I’ve read a couple of the books and watched all of the movies therefore, I consider my opinion to be of some value on this matter. I have been waiting for this series for a long time now and I have to say I am not disappointed on it. The story is intriguing and not a typical plot that is 100% predictable, I can say it’s actually had me on the edge of the sofa more than once. Really wondering what is going to happen in the story and genuinely intrigued about the motives and desires of the characters. They are complex enough to make you feel like they are real, they have their own agenda but at the same time have loyalty. The story is complicated enough to keep your interest without making you want to pause and rewind which can sometimes happen with sagas. It has the right amount of drama, thrill, mystery, fantasy, adventure and even a bit of romance (without being cheesy). Expand

They made a lot of poor decisions for the showWhile visually impressing it is just a generic fantasy show with mostly poor writing and an unlikable main character. If you are a Tolkien fan and / or read the books it is even more painful. They made a lot of poor decisions for the show like developers with barely any experience for the most expensive show ever made. Galadriel is nothing like in the books or movies and is only defined by being always angry and burning bridges with other characters and often also viewers. As a sidenote even one of her enemies named Adar says that the search for Morgoths (Big bad guy before Sauron) successor should have ended in her mirror and at that point I agree as she wants to kill all Orcs he considers his children painfully before his eyes just to torture him (By the way Adar is a great character and worthy addition). This is monstrous and unforgivable if you are the hero of the show. Then there are the Hobbits which they have to rename Harfoots because they have only the right to the appendixes of LotR (Why was this greenlighted?). They are not different from Hobbits being just the most common type of all Hobbits. Those are horrible people that abandon everyone to death that falls back behind on their travels. This made it hard to like them. To be fair there are some good parts. I like the Dwarven stuff and characters and this includes Disa who is great (many did not expect this). Gil-Galad is also good and I can see sparkles of something that could be an amazing story. Sadly the slow pacing and horrible dialogues ruin a lot of the story. While the visuals aka the CGI effects are amazing I wonder where all the money was used. The settings, costumes and armor often look cheap. Also they name everyone who criticize the show as istaphobs. Has ever insulting your core audience helped to make a show a success? Lastly I ask myself why buying the rights Tolkien if you abandon most of what is Tokien. At the end you have a generic fantasy show that is Tolkien in name only with poor writing and not many characters I liked. I give a 3/10 and if you are more of a Tolkien fan than me you should read this as 1/10. Expand

The production values are stellar and it shows. No more short charging ala Disney, with great effects = less running time. What we have is literally multiple blockbusters production values poured ad nauseum into this series. However, that aside, it actually has a bare boned plot, with characterization that is as straight forward as it is. In comparison to the more low key, House of the Dragon, it pales in term of that. However, it is still a good watch and near the end of the series, it does pick up on its last quarter. Expand

This series has nothing to do with the great Tolkien work, a total disaster where we now see how the showrunners try to improve an already dead show.
What a waste of money and hype.

The writing is very dumb, unfortunately there's no way around it.
The original material that this show is based on by JRR Tolkien has won the hearts of millions of people, yet this show that is based upon it, completely changes its main characters (Galadriel is not a wise sorcerer and seer, but a teenager with a sword, Elendil is not one of the greatest warriors of all time and a noble one directly related to the king, but a lowly ship captain, and so on and so on.
The acting is subpar for many characters - Galadriel is just aweful, the queen of Numenor is just bad, and so on...
It doesn't even look like an expensive show which is mind boggling, since it's the most expensive in history...
and the writing..... the vilagers are running away from the Orcs, so they destroy their fortified watch tower, and hide in their on ground village, in the tavern? I mean.... good lord this is just sooooo amazingly bad.... Galadriel jumps from the boat in the middle of the ocean literally to swim back 500 miles alone in sea. I can't even.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the worst written big budget show I have ever seen . People trying to brand it a racist backlash is nuts - the acting/casting isn’t the issue - Samuel l Jackson and travolta couldn’t get drama out of this . Expand

It is a bland and corporatized version of Tolkien, written by a production-line writing staff with a very poor understanding of the lore, and an even poorer understanding of good storytelling. The lead characters are horribly one-sided, uncharasmatic and the entire story is bereft of logic, respect of timelines, and every time the story needs it, some convenient story prop falls down from the sky (Sauron made a map and note informing they will make a land of evil? really? the Dark Lord wrote down his evil plans while laughing evilly and caressing his dark mustache? really?). I could keep on going about the cringe dialogue, the poor casting choices, the terrible pacing, and the general total lack of quality. But the show speaks for itself. Atrocious. This should be buried and forgotten. Expand

Characters are 2D.
Plot is so predictable and weak it's an embarrassment to the franchise.

Geographical innacuracies everywhere. The hobbits. What did they do to hobbits? They're songs and culture go against themselves. "Nobody walks alone." "now walk alone because you're too slow to walk with us?!" This series is not reflective of the work of arts that Tolkein crafted. It's a hollow, shallow, tokenist (Not Tolkeinist) money grab.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After watching 6 episodes of this travesty I am officially done! It's beyond awful in terms of writing and general credibility... Tried to watch 7th episode but I couldn't fathom to watch it beyond opening scenes. The writers absolutely ignore law of physics e.g. surely it wouldn't be wise to lift a burning wooden beam with bare hands but our "heroes" are able to with ease. Volcanic ashes should be scorching hot, not this **** we see in the show. Galadriel trying to act caring doesn't do it for me, she sucks. And harfoots, I can't stand them. There's nothing in this show that makes me want to watch it further. I just don't care what happens. Amazon should just count their losses, cancel the show and sell the rights to HBO to save it, or CW to bury it even deeper in poop. Expand

The cuck elf is really cringe. I'm surprised Peter Jackson is such a raging racist as he didn't cast any PoC other than the men of the East. Daddy Bezos probably likes it tho.
