This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 1 Point for graphics
I'll tell you why the series based on the Lord of the Rings franchise is bad. And it's not about black actors
What's good about the show is the graphics.
And by the way, I noticed that you use the creators of Amazon the Trident of Ukraine as a symbol of Sauron in the cave. What are these allusions to my country?
Everything looks juicy. Cons. - Agenda. It reads right away. The elves are shown as vile haters, and Galadriel is alone. Second elves. Why aren't they all pretty? Why with short haircuts and why old ones? Although elves are forever young. Why did the make-up artists badly worked out the images of elves, hobbits, people who were made homeless, why did they make lines where elves fall in love with people? They honor the purity of blood. Because people are all mortal. Why are the elves shown as dystrophics in the first series, except for Galadriel, and she alone includes Legolas, although he single-handedly smashed the army of orcs and a huge elephant? Third. Plot. Honestly, I tried not to sleep. But the dialogue is poor. Everyone sticks to their own line. Not a single strong male character. Apparently if they appear, they will be killed. And Galadriel alone will dance like a ninja. Why so many obscure characters? I read the book a long time ago, but I'm a fan of Tolkien's universe and entourage, and it hurts me how carelessly they worked with the appearance and plot of two series. I fell asleep on the second episode. I watched it later in rewind at a speed of +5, so at least funny voices like those of Chip and Dale. In particular, I laughed at the way that man behaved among the hobbits. Guys before praising the series. Set yourself a rule - Read at least The Hobbit or Books on the Lord of the Rings. There are strong characters there. There is a story. There is morality, but what kind of morality is this? Is Galadriel another Captain Marvel? Because strong? And where is the moral? What does this series contain? Nothing.. I'm disappointed. I expected more. If the truth in the series will also be sex scenes and it will spin into some kind of phantosmagoria where an orc will love a person, or a gnome a troll, then you can put an end to this. It is understandable why Peter Jackson did not face this. The series came out flat and superficial. I'd rather read books. Which is what I advise you. And ask a question. They didn't tell us why Sauron is bad, what did he do? They didn't say anything.. In general
Time wasted in vain

ROP is not worth watching because of the flatness of its dialogue and story.

I made it until episode 4, 0:16min before saying "Stop, I will not waste my time", I will watch Game Of Throne instead.

I give it a 2/10 because the Visual Effect studio did a nice job on the few panoramic shots.

The acting was wooden particularly Galadriel (one dimensional at best), the writing woeful and it moved at a glacial pace. I have now watched 5 episodes and if anything the story just gets worse. Galadriel continues to be awful, her facial expressions never change no matter what the scene - a real franchise killer here. I have not found one character or story line which is engaging and pulls me in to continue watching - the Harfoot storyline and crazy meteorite guy is particularly mind numbing. The writing continues to be pedestrian and the pace is still glacial. The storyline is also falling apart in terms of inconsistencies in logic and across relative timelines - beyond poor. It looks like the budget was spent on CGI - it’s not evident anywhere else. Season 5 was my final watch…….frankly it’s just boring. Expand

It attempts to tell 3 different story lines in parallel and they are all engaging. It is a pity that there are so many people that get so upset that there are black people in a show that they decide to review bomb it for no other reason.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is not consistent with Tolkien, and the characters that overlap LOTR bear no resemblance to each other. But even as standalone original work it is awful. Some examples:
Episode 1 - Galadriel is almost in Valinor, changes her mind, and tries to swim home, hundreds of miles across an OCEAN. I think the improbability engine from Hitchhikers Guide activated, because she was rescued.
Episode 1 - Galadriel leaps 30 feet in the air to kill an ice troll with her sword. She is Galadriel, not Wonder Woman. Her superpowers are not explained.
Episode 2 - Galadriel, stranded on a raft, mindlessly tugs on a rope for 3 minutes, while bragging to the mortal stranded with her that she is older than the Moon. Not a way to make yourself likeable, and what director leaves an actor in that situation with nothing to do with her hands during a long scene? And for a character that is already many thousands of years old, why has she not learned basic social skills, to not antagonize the person she is stranded on a raft with?
Episode 1 and 2 - the only enemies killed in hand to hand combat were by Galadriel and a completely untrained human woman. This after her young son, who can’t weight 100 pounds. violates basic physics by, tied to a rope, pulls up and captures a 200 pound orc using the rope as a pulley. If he was gripping an anvil to balance the weight this would work, but not in any real world.
Episode 3 - During a POW escape from the orcs, an Elf officer with CENTURIES of experience and training, once he is freed, throws his weapon to one side, goes up the hill, then stands there totally oblivious to being in an active war zone and gets killed by an orc arrow.

The long conversation between Elrond and the Dwarf King in episode 2 is the only dialogue so far that seems to be written by grownups. Most of the rest is at the complexity of a children’s cartoon.

I am fine with a diverse cast. You can go the direction of Peter Jackson in LOTR, where each ethnic group looks like a distinct ethnic group, or go to a diverse cast. Neither is good or bad, just a basic casting decision. But so far there is only one good or likable white male main character, the dwarf king.. It would rightfully be considered offensive if every Black character was evil, but it is no better to stereotype almost all white male characters as corrupt or evil. Elrond is a slimy politician in this version.

The main character Galadriel is a stiff man-hating know it all who has no grace, zero charisma, and the warmth of a funeral drum. I feel like I could meet nicer women at a Lesbian domestic violence conference while wearing "I am the king T-Shirt". The Harfoots are made into poor dirty Irish peasants with IQ's of about 50 points and then sprinkled with some diversity hires just to make sure all the boxes are checked.

The billion dollars spent on this roadkill would've been better spent on feeding homeless vets than this leftist circle jerk. Save yourself some time and just go watch Peter Jackson's movies cause this thing is DOA.

The fight scenes are embarrassing and horribly edited. The costumes look artificial. The weapons and armor look plastic and have just come out of a Chinese factory. The plot is uninteresting and develops extremely slowly. I've never heard such bad dialogues before - an embarrassing story about a stone or other miracles ... As if a six-year-old wrote them.

Instead we get a insufferable Galdriel as the main character, nothing like Tolkiens character, instead she's like an immortal Xena, a rough and ready human with pointy ears instead of the Lady of Light despite her being thousands of years old at this point. We get poor cheesy dialogue, terrible visuals in regards to the elves, they simply looks nothing like Tolkiens Elves on the most part, i.e Arondirs always super fresh haircut and Celebrimbor that looks like an old Hobbit. Don't even get me started on the evil Harfoots..."nobody gets left behind" or is it "sorry we have to leave you behind to die because you have a twisted ankle". Halbrand who is just a poor mans Aragorn. Dwarven females with no beard and randomly dark skin despite living in darkness, yet orcs who also live in the same environment of darkness basically being albino, which actually makes sense, just another of many inconsistencies, to many to list here. They've done a terrible job with the regal Numenoreans, I mean "they took our jobs" low-class men. So much lore changed from Tolkien and just made up. I wish I could give this less than zero as I really wish it had never been made, it breaks my heart. Expand

Seeing all the locations of the show in their primes is something as a fan I’ve always wanted to see. The characters of Elrond, Durin, Halbrand, Disa and Elendil are the main standouts. With special recognition to Elron, Elendil and Durin. Galadriel as a character is in line with her description in the unfinished tales and her arc looks to be a slow burn into who she later becomes by the 3rd age. The Harfoots are written in a way where you can see their similarity to what would eventually become Hobbits

The show looks amazing. Visually, probably the best thing ever put on TV. This includes vistas, effects, prosthetics, cinematography etc. Not much more has to be said.

In terms of plot, the intro episodes are a lot of world building. If that’s your thing this is going to hit for you. If you want to kinda just get straight to the action then the slow burn might not be your thing. The show is weaving essentially a part of LOTR history that didn’t get a full novel. More so notes and key events and dates. So all the in between are being written for the show. I don’t think anything has been changed more or less than how the films did the novels. And what they have added, fits in the universe well. All in all, as a LOTR fan since the late the early 00s this show is awesome and fits right into where I keep the movies. If you’re overly strict on being *exactly* like the book or an impatient viewer in the beginning you’re selling yourself short.

How did it come to this? Bad writing, bad acting, and a disdain for meaningful character development leads to mick that the show is. It makes Galadriel an incompetent fool, all elvish men toxic and selfish, and any other characters meaningless.

Amazon would have done better to create a story about water than it does to give any personality to its characters

The excitement and suspense is what's driving this show. Character development is solid and the cast members perform believable, and engaging, roles. The fight scenes revealed so far are unexpectedly more disturbing than what was seen in director Peter Jackson's films. Parental guidance is recommended for sure. The visual scale of the show is very realistic and breath-taking. The Elven Kingdoms of Lindon and Eregion; the subterranean Dwarven realm of Khazad-dum; the Edain kingdom of Numenor; and the overall beautiful landscape scenery; all completely stunning, and marvelous, in their own ways. The stunning imagery will have you admiring what the show-runners have presented us. Bear McCreary's musical score is spot on and can become very moving in many scenes. I'm completely sold on this show. So far so good. And despite some deviations to Tolkien's lore, it seems the show-runners and writers are doing the best they can with what rights they have to Tolkien's Second Age source material. Much of the lore is still there, while even the creative liberties capture the spirit of Tolkien's writings. I'm looking forward to more episodes. From someone who has been a lifelong Tolkien fan, and approached this series with the highest level of caution, I was impressed! My expectations were exceeded. Expand

The show is so entertaining, all the dialogue and character moments are so charming and enthralling, and it does not shy away from showing elements of the world with the gravitas and weight they were meant to have, despite how silly they may seem outside of their context, making the show that much more endearing. The effects are beautiful, the cinematography is excellent, and the fight choreography is surprisingly well put together and brutal at times, and no moment so far of the show has been a disappointment, so I highly and wholeheartedly recommend it. But honestly, I thought it was awful. The first scene left such a sour taste in my mouth, and it just kept getting worse from there. As a Tolkien adaptation it's pitiful. 1/10 is a generous score.
By the end of the second episode I couldn't wait for it to be over so I could go to bed. With one or two exceptions, I found the characters astoundingly unlikeable, the plot was unengaging, and I really really didn't care about any of it.
The series should have been just some different fantasy story and not pretending to be a Tolkien story. And I know this may sound like a hateful review, but it's not. I'm not hateful, I'm not emotional, I'm not angry. I'm just blown away by how dumb the whole thing was. I genuinely can't fathom how anyone can watch it and consider it Tolkienian.

As huge Tolkien fan, when I first heard that Amazon are going to make series about Second Age - I was excited and thrilled as kid. There were so so much to tell about those times!

But after watching first two episodes, my excitement has gone to zero. I do give some credit for quite good visual effects and landscapes though. But everything else is just rehashable common modern bubble-gum, just like Wheel of Time or any modern fantasy show like it. There is no spirit of Tolkien lore in these series at all. Elves look like man in golden gowns, there is no grace and wisdom of eons lived in them. Dialogues are empty and kinda 'Fast and Furious' level of sense in them. And I don't even mention all that widely disputed 'diversity' cast stuff...

Conclusion is: I don't recommend anyone to watch this show. As for me, I won't watch next episodes, and I prefer to keep Silmarillion books lore in my mind rather than this averageness. Disappointment.

The rings of power is the very reason why you CANNOT rely on influencers and critics as a metric for whether something is subjectively entertaining or otherwise. Yet the show makers and paid critics have the temerity to cry foul at ‘review bombing’ – Oh the irony. This show is so bad I feel I need to apologise to all the Tolkien fans for ever doubting them. Tolkien fans, I sincerely apologise, your fears were 100% valid. I don’t think there is enough booze in the world to induce permanent forgetfulness of this intersectional feminist diatribe as a veiled ‘tribute to Tolkien.’ To anyone still considering watching this glorified catalogue of left-wing caricatures, stereotypes and tropes through a feminist lens I say, good luck and you’ll be sorry. My only hope is that these critics for sale charge a hefty price tag for abandoning any pretense of journalistic integrity – the cost of securing their pseudo intellectual insights making up the bulk of the supposed $1 billion of this self-indulgent, narcissistic, bechdel test passing tripe. My wife seems slightly less interested/confused in the show. I won't lie that my knowledge of Middle Earth greatly enhances the show for me, so if you are a fan, give it a shot. I did real that people were concerned that Galadriel acted differently than she did in LOTR. Of course she does. Its been 5k+ years plus she hasn't even been in possession of a ring of power yet. I think back even 10 years of my life, and i'm a completely different person.

It's just so stupid.

I could pick 100 moments but to be spoiler free lets take Galadriel climbing and ice wall in the trailer. She uses a dagger to hang on not an ice axe as if a dagger would work well. She is in full armour which is very heavy and restricts movement, no one could free climb in that. She's still wearing gauntlets for an activity that involves getting your fingers into crevices. It's clearly freezing cold but she's wearing metal armour (a great conductor of heat) so she would just freeze to death.

Whoever wrote this couldn't be bothered to think, I don't understand how you can get paid so much and have so little clue? As I watch I am continously looking at it and thinking "that doesn't make sense" or "that doesn't work" or just "but why"?

Poor acting, writing and failing completely to be anything like the world Tolkien created lead me to think the executives were too focused on rolling around in their massive budget.

As such if you enjoy generic aimless fantasy that sets new precedent in boring, this is for you. It almost feels like the goal of this show was to dumb down every aspect of it to achieve meandering meaningless unenlightened humdrumness.

The only reason IMDB give this a 6.8 rating (at the time of typing) is that they are pnwed by Amazon. The CGI work is ok but certainly not excellent.

The show feels cheap and unimaginative. It lacks direction and any meaningful character development. Action scenes are very quick and tactically make little sense. The elves feel like humans with pointy ears. Ultimately the story embraces everything Tolkien isn't.Succinctly Put, Boring

Its so stupid, she was originally one of the most powerful being in the entire universe but she wasnt a warrior, she was a Sorceress.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ep.3-4: Halfway through season 1 a short update. Did it get better? Not really, but it got a bit more interesting. While I hate Guyladriel with a passion, her Numenor storyline is kind of watchable. I actually enjoy the dwarfs, at least these grumpy guys have an attitude. Harfoots are unwatchable, episode 4 was the best so far, for the simple reason, it had none of these little cringe buggers. Don't know what to make out of the Arondil(?) story, it is dumb, but it has a few good scenes and I actually find Adar(?) intriguing. So what's keeping me from promoting this to a glorious 3 or even 4? Immigration politics, Numenors haven't seen elves in at least centuries, 5 minutes after seeing 1(!!!) they rant about losing their jobs to immortal, never tiring elf workers.

Ep.1-2: First of all, this thing looks really, really amazing, apart for a few moments, where it looks really cheap. That's kinda odd, so much money and armor looks like cheap plastic. All in all though, the look is too clinically clean, especially in battles, why is there no blood? I also like the soundtrack, it's good, not amazing, but good. I also have to say I like the idea, I kinda get what Amazon wanted to do, before they decided to hire an incompetent crew.

Everything else is... really bad. The whole story is rushed, after the prologue I had no idea what is going on and I feel, that a way better story (defeat of Morgoth) was wasted. Characters range from dumb to bland to fu... annoying (hello there harfoots), most dialogues are really hard to bear, so much cringe there. Many scenes are a disaster like free climbing an ice covered mountain in plate armor, or jumping of a ship in the middle of the ocean, or not leaving directly after an orc attack... Rings also follows a common trend these days, so far I have seen one unlikeable Mary Sue (hello there Galadrial) and one very strong women (hi Bronwyn) and an army of stupid, useless men. As a male viewer I can't help but feel insulted.

All in all, watch it for the eye candy it is, but don't do it sober. And don't expect to be entertained, maybe turn it into a drinking game? Every time you cringe, get a shot.

Halfway through season 1, I think we have a fair picture of this show.
The Good
-CGI and practical effects are mostly good.
-The portrayal of the dwarves is mostly good.
The Bad
-The pseudo-Tolkien dialogue comes off as amateurish and breaks immersion. -The portrayal of Galadriel as a rude, impulsive super-soldier is annoying.
-The elves do not look or act like the elves in the books, which makes it feel like generic fantasy. -The hobbits are insufferable. -The plot moves at a snail's pace.
-There are obvious plot holes and inexplicable decisions.
The fact that I'm still watching means the show has some appeal, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I hope (but do not expect) that they will learn from the season 1 feedback and course-correct in coming seasons.

But the biggest problem with all of this is the compression of 4,000 years the second age down to a couple hundred years at most? The tone of this is not Tolkienian, the story writing and script writing is not Tolkienian, the dialogue is not Tolkienian. This is a disgrace to the legacy of the professor and to all his fandom. So so sad. I left this review after watching the first three episodes. I couldn't get through neither episode 2 nor episode 3 in one shot. They were both so spectacularly bad that I could only take them in small chunks so I wouldn't blow chunks. Literally blow chunks. Expand

Sure, there's a woke agenda, but they could at least make the brainwashing fun. This is tedious.

Definitely Not Tolkien. Galadriel is closer to Marvel's/DC's superheroes. The whole Middle Earth mythos is raped and killed. If it was named "The legendary adventures of Suzan" I would give it a 5/10. 1 point for special fx

From a review posted YESTERDAY! In less than ONE DAY, 157 people voted this review up? Really? I think not.

Scanning through these reviews, I now know that there is concerted effort to make positive reviews and reviewers look better than the countless people that voted negatively.

So cynically obvious it's laughable. EVERY positive review has been upticked by almost every person.

The only problem with attempting to fix a positive impression are the vast majority of those pesky negative reviewers.

You can try to fix things to look like positive 'Green' reviews but sadly for the fixers, I am seeing a LOT of 'Red' reviews here!

Remember; how many find something useful is not nearly as important as the reviews written.

The reviews for this show are awful - because the show is awful. Fix it all you like. The truth is out.

The most boring trash I've ever watched. Reduced Tolkien's work into easter eggs and somehow expects people to know tolkien stuff when making sure tolkien readers will hate this fanfic.

Next time Amazon plans to spend half a billion dollars on a TV show, they should make sure they have an interesting story to tell first. People will watch low budget movies and shows if they are compelling and interesting, but it's really hard to keep people around if all you have is flashy lights and no substance. Unfortunately Rings of Power has no substance. Expand

Furthermore, Tolkien is practically one of the primary forefathers who invented the formula for what would become the fantasy genre. He’s not just an author; he played an impactful role in history itself. Tolkien’s literature is not only studied in universities, but it has also laid the groundwork for thousands of fantasy writers to this day. Amazon using Tolkien’s writings for their own money making agenda is extremely disrespectful to Tolkien, his millions of fans, and to an entire subculture. However, what takes this situation to an entirely new level of disrespect is how people are bringing racism into it. The fact that people, Amazon included, have insinuated that we are being racist and misogynistic for disliking Rings of Power is such a horrible insult and so off base. A la verga! I find that personally insulting and enraging. How dare you insult people with such a horrible accusation without even knowing them. It’s so disgusting that Amazon has even tried to play this race card in order to avoid the real issue of how they have ruined one of history’s best writers, because they wanted to make bubble gum entertainment just to make money. They fired the Tolkien scholars when they wrote the script that’s all you need to know. Amazon…it’s shameful what you have done, and how you’re reacting to your mistake is even worse, shameful. Really disappointed with everything from costume design to writing & everything in-between. Only decent aspect is some of the shots of scenery.
