Trailers were first signal that something is wrong but I still hoped that was just bad choice of things to show and that when series starts some context and story will make it work. Sadly that was not to be. When ep. 1 aired it was mess, next one even more so. I decided to wait for season 1 to finish, then let some time pass before posting any comment. Just let things cool a bit, give myself chance to watch it again from the start. It didn't help, show is awful in almost all regards. Scenery and effects are good, lots of money got put in obviously. Everything else is catastrophe. Story is bad to the level of offense to intelegence. Acting is bad. Characters are totally "non Tolkien". Disaster all in all Expand

The performances of the actors were very artificial (except for the spectacular performance of Nazanin Boniadi) and the script was so weak and ridiculous that it was as if you were watching a children's TV show! All the heroes of the series were women and all the cowards and slaves were men! The story line of the series was very dumb and vague so that it was not possible to distinguish what the main purpose of the characters of the series is and what they are looking for. I got through the first three episodes on that feeling alone, though I knew I wasn’t as impressed as I had hoped. And after the fourth episode I realized that it was not going to get any better. I couldn’t anticipate how bad it would end up being.

The writing and pacing is truly awful. I cannot stress enough how bad the dialogue was in every single episode. There were so many contrivances in the plot which were barely explained, if at all, and the characters and their races at large felt barely thought out. It’s as if the writers were told to not even try to write with Tolkien in mind, or the existing film universe Jackson gave us. At best this is a weird fever dream, fantasy fiction of Bezos’s making and someone should have woken him up an hour ago. The casting choices were weird, mostly where the elves are involved. Galadriel was performed with no dimension, which is such a shame because Cate Blanchette gave so much meat to her. Celeborn was stiff, cold, and the storyline honestly made me think he was evil. Celebrimbor was the first elderly looking elf, which just simply blows up everything Tolkien’s elves were meant to look like. Months later I am still so deeply disappointed. I know the show wasn’t made just for current Tolkien fans, but this certainly wasn’t the best foot forward in trying to keep those fans and then gain new ones. But I’m not shocked this was the outcome when Amazon hired show runners who have only worked on Star Trek films. I’m not sure if there’s hope for the rest of the series. The next seasons would have to have new writing team, show runners, and maybe some recasting to get my love.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Such a disappointment, I had to come on here and leave a review because I feel strongly that IMDB is altering the reviews and ratings. The series feels strongly of the hatchet, rush job that I've seen from Disney with treasured stories. After the first two episodes I began to fast forward through the Galadriedl and Aarondir stories. The only storyline I've found remotely interesting, and still the shallowness of characters is very visible is the Brandyfoot and The Stranger. I've written the series off but will probably watch season two with my button on the fast forward button. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To start off, let me say that, objectively, the series probably deserves somewhere between a 4-6 out of 10, but I am marking it lower because, subjectively and as a passionate, longtime Tolkien fan, I dislike it very intensely.

I'll start off with what works, as it is a short list. The visuals are mostly spectacular, as most others have noted. There are a few shots where the CGI is spotty, but overall it's hard to complain about how the show *looks,* unless it is to point out that it all feels a bit too "clean," lacking the grittiness of, say, Peter Jackson's original trilogy (but this can be said for almost all modern cinema/television).

The music is mostly excellent, with the one exception for me being the Harfoot music. I understand what Bear McCreary was aiming to achieve there, but it strays the farthest from what we might call the "Middle Earth" sonic palette, and I simply don't care for it.

The acting is generally serviceable to good. In fact, I think given better material, most of these actors could have done a terrific job.

That's about it. Now on to what DOESN'T work. I'll try to keep it as short and sweet as possible, which will likely be easier as I intend to avoid spoilers.

This is an adaptation, yes? One might expect an adaptation to at least attempt to, I don't know, ADAPT its source material with some degree of fidelity and faithfulness. This show makes no such attempt. There is not one narrative event that takes place in season 1 that is actually lifted from Tolkien's writings. (The event that closes out the final episode is technically a thing that does happen, but even it happens in such a way as to be totally out of order and thus defeat the purpose of the thing happening at all).

Here we have a show where, rather than tell the story that does exist in the Second Age laid out by Tolkien, the showrunners instead decided to take the names of some characters and places from the lore, add a few new ones, and invent an entirely different story altogether. Far from just "filling in the gaps," the show actively alters established lore and directly contradicts it at every turn.

Defenders of the show love to point out that Peter Jackson made changes in his LotR trilogy adaptation, as if there's some legitimate equivalency to be drawn. Yes, he made changes, but his changes were generally made in service to the translation of the story as it exists in literary form to a form that would actually work on screen. Many of his changes were simple omissions of events or characters that don't meaningfully affect the plot. Others were done in order to enhance the story for a visual medium - but the story remained intact! At the end of the day, his LotR films were laudably faithful, and struck the appropriate balance between book fidelity and quality filmmaking. A film trilogy doesn't become the most awarded film franchise of all time for no reason, fwiw.

Defenders of the show will also point out whenever a reference is made to something that is actually in the lore - as if these little "easter eggs," essentially, are enough to justify every other change, and somehow boost the show's lore accuracy in any real way. "Oh, this character here is going places they never went, doing things they never did, participating in plot structures that make no sense, never happened, and run roughshod over the carefully constructed source material? Who cares, because look, they made a quick reference to Earendil! See, the show IS lore accurate!"

As an adaption of Tolkien, the show simply fails utterly.

The other big problem here is the writing. From the moment-to-moment dialogue, to the overall plot/narrative structure and pacing, I think this is one of the worst written shows I have ever seen, and I'm not being hyperbolic. It isn't simply, as some have said, "painfully average," where the writing isn't great but is competent enough that you can keep your brain engaged and actually enjoy what you're watching. On the contrary, it is so lazy, contrived, nonsensical and unbelievable, that the only way I can imagine anyone might enjoy it is to turn their brain off completely and gawk at the pretty imagery.

Characters don't behave in logical, believable ways. Their motivations don't make sense. Big, important characters routinely - and by sheer, unbelievable coincidence - end up at just the right place, at just the right time, so the plot can move forward. Sequences of events don't seem to connect in a logical or meaningful way. So many scenes, especially in retrospect, feel like one-off D&D moments that have no consequence or bearing on what follows. Fast travel is abused absurdly. It often feels like the writers just had a checklist of "moments" they wanted to have, and devised a bunch of lazy plot contrivances to get us to each "moment." A travesty, all in all.

I'm running up against a character limit here, so I'll leave it at that. The show is an embarrassing disgrace, simply put.

In 2022, even in cheap series, CGI is sometimes better, not to mention the battle scenes.
Maybe Amazon should call and recruit the creators of the Rammstein ADIEU video, who show such quality and content in a 9-minute video that your entire serial looks like a super-cheap production in the background of their video

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this. Peter Jackson's trilogy is my favorite piece of entertainment ever. I've read all of Tolkien's work, and like to think I have a decent knowledge of Arda, Middle Earth, etc.

I went into this completely blind not listening to any of the hype or criticism surrounding it so I could go in and judge it based on its own merits.

Sadly, it disappoints far more than it succeeds. The writing is absolutely atrocious. None of the plot threads fit together at all, and the timeline is all over the place. One scene concerning the Harfoots encompasses over a week, then you jump right back to Galadriel's story, which has only moved a couple hours. I think they would have benefitted from telling a simplier narrative than trying to shove so many plot points down our throats so quickly. It's also clear that this is a work of fanfiction by the writing team. Characters in this act nothing like the characters in the books. Things that happen in this show directly contradict Tolkien's books, like Gandalf arriving by meteor instead of arriving on a boat with the other Istari, or Galadriel getting on a boat in episode 1 to go West when in the novels she committed herself to Middle Earth at the end of the 1st age, over a thousand years prior, and changed her relationship with her own husband, who is absent from this show outside one reference in episode 7. It also tries to misdirect you as to who Sauron really is, but anyone with a passing knowledge of the source material know who Sauron is immediately, and the twist did not work at all. Character motivations make no sense whatsoever a lot of the time and change for no reason just so the plot can happen. Oh, and the Southlanders plan of leaving their hilltop fortress with only one entry point to fight in their village instead with no walls or bridges needed to access instead...WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT?!

The acting is very hit or miss. Charlie Vickers, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Sophia Nomvette, Lloyd Owen, and Joseph Mawle are all excellent in their roles. Unfortunately, the shows really hinges on the performance of Morfydd Clark, and DEAR GOD, she's more wooden than a Numenorian ship. She is just awful as Galadriel. For the first half of the show (where virtually nothing interesting happens), she does nothing but treat every single person around her like crap, demanding things from strangers and throwing a tantrum when she doesn't get her way. This is not how Tolkien envisioned Galadriel at all.

The production value is also hit or miss. Some of the cities like Numenor and Kazadum look fantastic one moment, then very cheap the next. The orcs by and large look fantastic most of the time, but the Numenor and Elvish Armor looks incredibly cheap. There are also some terrible CGI sequences (the warg scene with "Gandalf", the creation of Mt. Doom) that feel very rushed and cheap. And at $60 million an episode, NOTHING about this show should come off as cheap or rushed. There's just no excuse.

And lastly, it is very clear that they want to make Sauron and the orcs layered, and that IS NOT what Tolkien wanted. There is literally an "Orcs lives matter" speech from Adar in Episode 6. Sauron and Morgoth are representations of pure evil. Making them complicated just cheapens the courage and sacrifices of the elves and men who fought to defeat them. Tolkien didn't live in a world filled with grey. Evil was evil to him.

In short, this show is a disaster. It's boring, poorly written with very inconsistent production values, some good performances overall weighed down by too many poor ones, and just plain disrespectful to the source material. And that has nothing to do with the race of the characters (see my favorite performances above), it's that they don't honor the characters and stories Tolkien wrote. They wanted to tell their own story with Tolkien's characters, and that to me is just unacceptable.

3.5/10. Do not recommend

Not ready to agree. This beautiful picture means only one thing. Artists and other professionals, graphics and other things that were bought for a billion, were in the clutches of insane propagandists of the current agenda, ignoring either Tolkien's legacy or viewers and fans. The worst thing in this genre so far. Perhaps if they didn’t spend a billion, it wouldn’t be so sad. 0/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This isn't Tolkien. Period! Nothing about this show feels Tolkien. The writing, stories, characters, dialogue are not Tolkienian. I've really tried very hard to like this show. I did, but after 5 episodes, I'm out. Its unbearable, specially after the insanity about the origins of Mithril and elves need for it. At this point, I think amazon is trolling us. Nothing about this show makes sense. Gil-Galad is portrayed as scheming and evil. Elendil is some low level commander. Harfoots are psychopaths who leave their own to die. Elrond has no conception of oaths and how serious and consequential they are in Tolkein's world. Durin and Disa are the only barely likable characters in the whole show. The lead character, Galadriel is petulant child. How does an 5000 yr old elven nobility have no courtly manners.. she is disappointing and poorly written, even after 5 episodes. She has only one mode and always dialed up to a 11. So many plot holes and characters that don't make any sense. Just lazy writing and poor pacing. 5 episodes in and still nothing has happened. Its like bland generic fantasy show that has Tolkien label slapped on it.. This isn't even Tolkien inspired or an adaptation. Huge disappointment. Expand

I did not care for any one of the characters because they were all either unlikable, or did not get any screen time! We teleport around a lot, there is no sense of time or a journey to see. The pacing, story, character development are all lacking.

The costumes: definitely horrible and badly made

Galadriel is unbearable. Most characters are inconsistent and not very smart. The plot is all over the place (whose idea was it to go back and forth between like 4-5 different plot lines??). The music does not stand out at all, it's forgotten the moment the episode is over.
What the writers thought were clever plot twists were just dumb ideas that never should've been added! Even ignoring LOTR lore, looking at this as a generic fantasy TV show, I'd say it sucks and I would not go on watching. I had hope it would get better toward the end, but no, it gets worse. YIKES.

And I can say that if this were not LOTR, I would have dropped this show after episode 1. I tried hard to be open minded, knowing that this won't reach the level of detail and charm that the LOTR movies had. I did not even refresh my memory about any other LOTR lore before watching, so inconsistencies with the original lore aren't even part of my review.
The show still sucks! The pacing is WEIRD. The characters are unlikable. Durin was the only character I kind of liked. Galadriel is one of the worst characters I have ever seen. This is the reason why I, as a woman, prefer male main characters. Because they don't know how to do good, strong women! There are some nice looking sets, and scenes, but that's it, and that is not enough to make me care about what happens.

While it rightly goes up against it's genre peers such as HBO's House of the Dragon, Rings of Power cannot help but falter and fall under the weight of it's own ineptitude. It's flaws are numerous, flagrant, and back breaking. A seemingly polished and beautiful spectacle piece built on foundations made of Loess. Like several of its derided peers, one need only take a glance at the creative team driving the dump truck to see the most fundamental failing Rings of Power makes. Both showrunners have neither the resume nor the pedigree to take one of, if not the, most important pieces of fantasy on earth and create an adaptation of it. Looking beyond the behind the scenes and into the meat of the problems themselves, issues are abound. After a relatively enjoyable first two episodes the series falls apart under the weight of its hubris. Characters are often flat, uninteresting and tritely underwritten. Pacing is glacial at best once the show gets going with most plot points resolving in the most predictable fashion while several prominent ones are forgotten altogether. Narratively the suffers greatly from four entirely underwritten story lines that receive little payoff by the eigth and final episode, begging one to wonder why several appear in the series at all when many do nothing to push the story forward. The series has one passable action sequence near its end, with the few others showing a glaring amount of clumsiness and lack of power its movie predecessors were known for. Positive platitudes to the musical score and digital effects cannot save Rings of Power from artistic mediocrity. Tolkien fans (and fantasy television fans in general) will be left scratching their heads as to this shows potential got led astray so quickly, let alone gets so much wrong. The show amounts to an exceptionally poor Amazon product. Expand

Most of it has already been said. I'd like to point out the particularly bad fight choreographies. They are pointless, artificially bloated, unnatural, and don't serve the overall plot. Not comparable to the original trilogy.

starting with the good part of the show, the few city's featured are, for the most part beautiful. that's where the good things stop

The writing is amateur at best, overall a waste of money on poor story telling that has mediocre characters, bland twists. All other components of a show fall apart because of poor writing The characters are not well thought out and dont capture me in the slightest. besides the one dwarf i wouldn't care if the entire orc army took them all down.

Finishing all the episodes and looking back, i will probably not watch it again, and after more thought it reminds me of a film students attempt at a remake of a J. R. R. Tolkien story which is arrogant to say the least, on top of poorly attempted.

to think all that money was wasted on bad writing with bland charters is heartbreaking. It makes me question where did all the money go is this some kind of money laundering?

Tolkien is rolling in his grave after this one. 1/10 . the 1 for the visual of the citys because there great. everything else, not so great

I'm here for the Goosebumps!

Wonderful imagery, storytelling and music. Even though it is more of a "saga" so far and less raw than the LOTR movies, and differs from the original Tolkien writings(which even LOTR did BTW), I feel like it still delivers a true Middle Earth experience with the same world, imagery, ideas and cultural differences as I grew up to love. I love especially the music since it isn't a copy of the LOTR score but still has a similar feeling. Screw the criticism and just enjoy a good, EXPENSIVE show! If I'd want to criticize I could but I'd rather go on an adventure and see where this goes.

I'm hooked and I want to be.

Unrelatable characters, weird time jumps and plot holes litter the series. This is so far the biggest "TV" disappointment in years. This comes from some1 who consumes all fantasy and sci-fi good or bad. By episode 5 i fell a sleep and didn't even bother to continue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do not consider myself an extremist Tolkienian, but, like many, a reader who loved the author's writing and the complex creative process that, by applying linguistics, mythology, genealogy, philosophy, and history, led to a real cosmogony.

Let's start with the positives:
The scenography is fantastic! 3D computer graphics manage to recreate a coherent and immersive, credible environment, attributable to Tolkien's stories and to what we have already seen in Peter Jackson's films.

And unfortunately, in my opinion, this is the only good thing in this series: contrary to my expectations, the negative sides are innumerable and deeply impacting.

The first major problem is the actors: the main characters lack charisma and consistency. The king of the Elves, a millennial being who should be of immense experience and wisdom, but he seems a "simple" human king, narrow-minded and with no prospects, so insecure that he continually listens to Elrond's advice, who looks like an arrogant kid with styling.

The actress who plays Galadriel fails to convey, either physically or through her acting skills, the light, the height of a High Elf, a semi-divine being of 3000-4000 years. She looks like an angry, temperamental little girl [quote: "you remind me of my teenage daughter" ... sigh!]. She is totally blinded by her impulsiveness and desire for revenge, with no ability to relate to others, unable to be heard by both the Elves and the humans of Numenor. When she tries to appear absorbed or intense or is framed in the many slow-motion scenes, she does not convey the coolness, strength, or nobility appropriate to her rank, her age, but she just seems empty, absent.

The fact is that it seems that the writers did not bother to understand some key aspects of Tolkien's world, its genesis, the characteristics of each race, and the chronology of events, but rather they were in a hurry to superficially insert their stories original and new characters regardless of the disastrous consequences they generated.

So High Elves, behave like stupid human teenagers, completely distorting them. Numenorian men should be over two meters tall and deeply connected to the Elves.

Sauron should be disguised as an Elf and infiltrate Numenor corrupting the soul of the regent, causing the departure from the Light and therefore the fall of the kingdom that was given to Edain by the same Valar for the help offered by men to the Elves in the wars of the Before It Was.

* SPOILER ZONE *

The rings of power are created, over the span of tens of years, just a thousand years after these events. And not in ten minutes at the end of the season.

The original storylines, created by the writers, are nonsense, using tricks to add unnecessary romance and drama. Visually epic scenes, like Galadriel being burned by the eruption and Isildur's death? Totally useless. The fallen Ishtar they want us to believe is Sauron (using super Sayan priestesses)? But who believes it?

The fact is that Tolkien's books are the most widely read in the world. Everyone has read them, apart from the writers, who seem to be writing dialogues for soap operas. So you can't think about creating a series, spending $ 1 billion, and pretending that no one knows what happens next, or has no expectations of the correct sequence of events.

This series offends the viewers' intelligence and Tolkien's genius. He tries to appear philologically correct by plagiarizing Peter Jackson's films, and at times even mistaking context. The fight scenes are awkward. The werewolf looks like a mouse. Adar looks like a corrupted Elf, he doesn't look like an Uruk Hai should have. And anyway, the Uruk Hai are created by Sauron much later. In each episode, you keep asking yourself: why do they do this? It does not make sense! And why don't they do this else?

Why don't they break the dam with the Orc army instead of damning themselves to find the key that ... opens the dam?

What a mess. How sad. What a missed opportunity!

With the money Amazon spend on this series, you would expect securing the commitment of established actors or at the very least - competent writing. Writing and acting is what makes or breaks a show. Not budget, paid reviews or virtue signaling. You are not doing any favors to the "diverse" actors, if you put them in a disaster of a show with barely anything to work with.
While I am extremely disappointed with the show so far, I must give credit where it's due. Some of the CGI and cinematography is really good, unfortunately not enough to offset the horrible writing of the show.

P.S. Initially, I gave the show a 1 to reflect the superior production quality. However after seeing how the creators, instead of taking the overwhelming criticism to heart, started instead attacking their viewers by calling them bigots and racists, I am going for a score of 0. Do not waste your time.

Galadriel literally "jumping ship" to swim around in the ocean doesn't make sense unless you just want to create a damsel-in-distress moment and cram action scenes in your TV show. Expand

The bad:
- Mediocre acting (high school acting level)
- Inconsistent storytelling (annoying contradictions in the plot)
- Action scenes that are completely illogical
- Predictable all along

"BECAUSE I CAN NOT STOP, THERE IS A TEMPEST IN ME!!" hahaha, I mean I was just hatewatching at some point, I HAD to continue watching just so I could get a good laugh at this travesty of a show, so I guess Amazon really did do something right, they made a show that is so bad that you have to keep watching.

Another point is the dumbing down of EVERYONE so that Galadriel can get her girl boss moments in, one example being the Numenorians, (supposed to be the strongest and best soldiers of man in all of Middle Earth) they barely even knew how to fight, until Galadriel shows up and teaches them how to do so, or the fact that the entire show is literally based on a happenstance that Sauron and Galadriel are in the same area of the ocean that she jumps into. So, Halbrand was secretly following the Elven ship (without them noticing???), then he just blew up his own ship and rafted over to her real quick when he thought the moment was right? If you can't see how awful this writing is, then I am truly sorry for you. Even the best storyline (the dwarves, which wasn't even that great to begin with, especially the Balrog scene) is undermined by the fact that the Queen of the dwarves believes that YOU are a "racist" if you didn't love every aspect of this show, it makes it hard to even care about the dwarven storyline after reading those articles, so thanks for that, Deesa :D Anyways, this show is garbage even if you don't care about the lore in Tolkien's books, it is a PRIME example on what you should not do when you are writing, and it is SO sad that instead of being something competent and watchable, it is a laughing-fest of some of the worst writing that I have ever seen.

An absolute embarrassment to watch! I mean like I was really embarrassed watching it, I laughed out loud and even had to pause the playback to take a break it was so painful.

I was overwhelmed with awful dialog, nonsensical amateurish writing, misguided casting, cringe inducing "action" scenes and a story that is riddled with absurd plot holes and ridiculous moments.

The VFX do hold solid and are truly impressive, and to be clear this does not include the costumes and practical effects which are mostly atrocious. The score and sound design are solid for the most part, but not particularly memorable, although the Howard Shore title track is a true bait and switch.

I came in with an open mind, trying to temper the pre-release criticism, but to my pure disappointment I found the pre-release criticism warranted if not tempered in levels. This is truly a media disaster for me, I don't how they can salvage this mess without practically a re-boot for the next season. I'd actually prefer them to throw in the towel, take the loss and move on from this embarrassment.

Harfoots in the Second Age just because they wanted to have “hobbits” in the show, female dwarves with no beards, average sized Numenorians. With all the money they spent on this you think they could have afforded a more accurate take on Middle Earth. Expand

The storyline deviates so far from what Tolkien wrote that it might as well be a completely different world. The characters are written so totally different from those that Tolkien created that they shouldn't even share the same name. Character dialogue ranks among the worst that's ever made its way onto a screen and the acting is equally poor. The wardrobe looks like it all came from thrift stores. I'd go on and on, but it almost seems pointless. I'd like to point to something in the show that actually stood out as being well done, but there just isn't anything that passes the test. Don't waste your time watching this. Even if you've never read Tolkien's works, this show will leave you asking yourself why you wasted your time. Expand

Bad fanfiction in the guise of a Tolkien story. The first season of the Rings of Power runs as long as Peter Jackson's trilogy but has maybe 1/10th as much going on plot-wise. Entire episodes are nothing but wheel-spinning. To quote BilboBad fanfiction in the guise of a Tolkien story. The first season of the Rings of Power runs as long as Peter Jackson's trilogy but has maybe 1/10th as much going on plot-wise. Entire episodes are nothing but wheel-spinning. To quote Bilbo Baggins, "I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread." This wouldn't be so bad if the series was at least building up to something memorable but in the end it just sort of fizzles out. The storyline involving the hobbits ("harfoots") and their mysterious visitor is the weakest of all, spreading about 10-15 minutes worth of storytelling over 8 episodes. The best is the storyline involving Elrond and Durin attempting to strike a deal between the elven and dwarven empires. The actors play off each well and there's several humorous moments. Ultimately though it doesn't lead anywhere. The fact that the actor playing Elrond looks absolutely nothing like Hugo Weaving doesn't help.
The other two plotlines, Galadriel's obsessive quest to find Sauron and a human village trying to fend off orcs, are given lots of moments of high drama but just aren't engaging. A pair of major plot reveals in the final episode both flop because you can see the twists coming as early as the first episode.
The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit have already been done. There's nothing of Tolkien left to adapt. That sets the bar pretty high for anybody trying to expand on his works: It has to be both original and as good as Tolkien's own novels. The Rings of Power isn't anywhere near that level.

A lot of money was put into CGI, but extremely little into the scripts and the actors. The monotonously played, permanently grumpy Galadriel just gets on your nerves. It would have been good if she had been killed in the first episode. But no, she's the main character. Oh dear. I effectively gave up after four episodes. This dross is in line with what modern Hollywood does to popular nerdculture icons - buys them up and then perverts and degrades them, either through sheer writing incompetence or through active hatred of the original material. There's certainly both on display here but straightforward incompetence wins by a mile. Amazon paid for the most expensive entertainment undertaking in the history of the world and put the most inept showrunners in charge of it. The writing is actually shocking, given the cost and prestige of this project. And considering you can say the same about their previous bungled adaptation of a beloved fantasy series - the Wheel of Time - a strong pattern of arrogance, stupidity and incompetence starts to emerge for the Amazon Studios. And the attempts of the Amazon top brass and the showrunners to explain the universal rejection of their amateurish, fanfiction-grade product by pretty much everyone except the journalist by painting Tolkien fans with your usual "-ism" brush is just a sad cherry on top of this cardboard cake. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stunningly terrible writing and direction. The show is amateurish when not flat out boring. Decisions made by main characters don't make sense, their personalities are uninteresting, and developments in story lines are either nonsensical, physically impossible or asinine (i.e. an Elven master smithe never heard of creating an alloy, and when coaxed to be gentler with the blending of metals, in the end he just tosses in a turd of mithril?). Even extras look and act like mobs of amateurs. We so wanted to love this show, I even purchased a 75 inch TV to watch it. If there was a negative score, I would give it. Expand
