This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The writing is not only lazy and sophomoric, but it completely disregards time and space. Middle Earth, for example, is massive, yet elves can swim for hundreds of miles in open ocean and a journey by sail of 1,800 miles from Numenor to the Southlands apparently takes one day. Those are some swift schooners. This show is not true or accurate to any writings by J.R.R. Tolkien concerning Middle Earth. None. Zip. Zero. Nada. #TheSeaisAlwaysRight Expand

This show has nothing to appeal to any true Tolkien fan. Any so-called "fan" of Tolkien who likes this show is either:
A. Lying B. Have never actually read the source material
C. Only know the movies/cartoons based on the work

Reasons why no actual Tolkien fan would like the show:
1. Tolkien hated allegory in all its forms. This is well documented and practically verbatim in Tolkien's own words. Meaning if you respect the author and enjoyed his works then it would be upsetting to see someone using the author's own work to do nothing but crowbar allegory into practically every scene of the show. 2. They take the names of well-known characters and then create a completely new character that shares none of the original beloved character's traits. This is not showing respect this is disrespect not only to the author but to the fans due to the way they responded when this was pointed out.

3. Do not use established known important milestones. Listen you are talking about a subject that people study with a passion some people know the history of Middle Earth better than real Earth history. Most people who are real fans know at least a rough outline of the history and even may have a favorite moment or hero. This show completely ignores the established history and milestones. This again shows disrespect for the author and his work. Then it turns into disrespect of fans who point it out.

4. Poor grammar and horrible monologs. Professor Tolkien was a professor of English and Litierute. If the writers were his students he would fail them for the amateurish writing of the show. Nothing flows no stirring speeches. Instead, you get dumb things like "give me the meat! and give it to me raw!" lol come one, and this gem "a boat sails because it looks up and rock sinks because it looks down". Yes, those are actual quotes from this atrocity.

If you stripped out the association with the beloved Tolkien and his works this show would be trashed universally since there would not any pretend "fans". Please someone at Amazon fire everyone who had anything to do with writing or running this show! You spent 1 billion and you got worse than nothing for all that money and energy.

This was so bad that I had to create numerous accounts in order to vote it into oblivion. Writing is atrocious. Acting is terrible. Costume design is bad. Specia effects are laughable at best. Music is fine though, Bear knows his ****

It is the murder of the story that carries the whole of the fantasy genre on it's shoulders. Really, making it this bad must have taken some special effort. Hats of to you, JD Payne and PAtrickMckkay.

The production value and plotting are excellent, and the casting is on point. Morfydd Clark as Galadriel provides one of the best performances in a fantasy role in a long time, and will likely be seen as her breakout role for years to come.

As someone who grew up reading everything Tolkien, this show has reawakened my love for Middle Earth in adulthood. For the first time in decades, I find myself wanting to dive back into Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle Earth, as the show has done such a great job of putting a new spin and making a coherent narrative out of the various drafts and letters written by Tolkien about the Second Age.

The fact that this show is clearly planned to occur over several seasons, with a strong commitment, is also clear, as the plots we saw in Season 1 are sowing the seeds for future growth and development. Hoping there isn't too long of a wait for Season 2!

I was very skeptical after the first trailers, but still wanted to give the whole series a chance, and here is my first feedback after the first 2 episodes:

I'm struck by the fact that the developers actually took a bit of a look at the Lord of the Rings lore. Unlike Peter Jackson's movies, the events of the first age are addressed here (albeit briefly). Important events such as the destruction of the 2 Trees of Valinor and the subsequent war against the dark ruler Morgoth.

About the story:
The story is mostly true to lore (so far). What is new is that Galadriel tries to avenge her brother Finrod Felagund, who was killed by Sauron in the first age. In itself a good idea, in the books Finrod was just dead and no one cared, the war just went on. Here, on the other hand, a little more importance is given to this actually important figure. However, the developers also made some stupid mistakes: the half-elf Elrond, for example, was excluded from a meeting of the royal council in the first episode because he is not a full-blooded elf...WHAT? Elrond is the great-grandson of Turgon, the predecessor of King Gil-Galad as High King of the High Elves. NEVER would they dare exclude him from a council meeting, for he is the rightful heir to the throne should Gil-Galad die! If you can overlook these mistakes, you get an entertaining fantasy adventure - but I've only seen the first two episodes, so beware, I don't know if there won't be worse mistakes in the upcoming episodes. However... the war against Morgoth is over and the free rulers of Middle-earth are preparing for a time of peace (just like in Tolkien's The Silmarillion).

So is the series well or rather poorly realized?
Difficult question... actually, it's mediocre at best.... Why? Well, Amazon has decided to make some modern adjustments to the characters. For example, the elven princess Galadriel is now suddenly a warrior (representing the strong woman in the main role) and in principle there is nothing wrong with that, BUT there is one problem: Galadriel is actually a witch and NOT a warrior. I can understand why Amazon chose this path, BUT to rewrite, replace or as happened here, rob already existing characters of their identity for ideological reasons is an absolute no-go.

My suggestion to Amazon: If you need characters in the future to represent certain groups of people or want to do inclusion for ideological reasons, please invent a new character, like you did with the elf Arondir for example. Please don't change existing characters that are loved by the fans....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is not awful. There are definitely worse things to watch, but I can't help but compare it to the actual lore from the books and movies. For being a prequel it changes the characters too much for them to even be considered the same characters. If you didn't watch/read the originals then it's just an average fantasy show with unlikable characters. Galadriel is the most arrogant and annoying prick, she is right about everything until the "Twist" in the final episode. Elrond is pretty good being a much younger version of himself that is seen in the later films. As a lord of the rings prequel, it's absolutely awful. Every character they try to have twists can instantly be predicted in the first few episodes. They try to give suspense around characters who we know are alive because THEY ARE IN THE MOVIES!!! The only way to make this show watchable is with friends, or with drinks.

As just a fantasy show, it's 5/10

But as a lord of the rings prequel, it's a 3/10 shoulda made the Silmarillion.

Even if we (as this review will) set aside the obvious fact that zero respect has been paid to Tolkien's work and just view it as a stand-alone fantasy series it, simply put, is a pure disaster considering the extensive budget. As a viewer you constantly fluctuate between boredom caused by the extremely low tempo and irritation over the silly plot and the unlikable characters. Almost every single scene comes across as drawn-out and unnecessarily slow. 50 percent of every scene could be cut without losing anything of value. The show constantly attempts to cover up these obvious short-comings by blasting mood-setting music. To no avail.

The dialogue is best described as cringeworthy, filled to the brim with pseudointellectual garbage.

The characters are terrible. The main character comes across as pure B-word Karen and a Mary Sue. The harfoots are unlikeable psycho-hobbits. You find yourself rooting for the main villain before too long.

The storyline is full of plot holes, fillers and conveniences and there is no universal concept of time. The script is filled with uninteresting mystery boxes leading nowhere.

The series is, lastly, full of overt modern political messaging. It's also filled with intersectional theory, meaning that "all" female characters are wise and capable by default, and "all" male characters are either uncapable or evil. Unless they happen to be portrayed by people of colour, of course. It even allows you predict the identity of the main villain with precision by simply blindly picking the most capable white male character around. Nobody wants this in a showing purporting to create something epic. Please just stop.

I can't think of anything positive except for the visuals, which most of the time are stunning. The armour and some of the CGI needs more work, though.

As a Tolkien adaption this train wreck is a pure 0/10. As a stand-alone fantasy series it's a 3/10.

It's a story about unique, at times unlikely and even more rarely unfortunate friendships between characters. It's a story about pride, greed, deception, and fantastical marvels to be achieved. It's the best place to get a glimpse on Valinor, the Undying Lands, Lindon, Eregion, Kha-za-dum, Numenor and Mordor to name a few - placed that weren't exceptionally well if at all covered in Peter Jackson's films. Amazing acting in place by the actors of Galadriel, Durin, Elrond, Disa, Adar, Aldir and many others. Underappreciated gem in the TV history. A must see! Expand

Provides a brilliant new marker of whether or not people have the remotest taste — just ask them what they thought of this drivel!

For some very peculiar reason, a great many seem to rate it on principle (because of the diverse casting apparently). But the reality is, this I s one of the worst shows I’ve ever sat through. Only did so because I had COVID, and it was a distraction. Very funny in parts (unintentionally). An absolute sacrilege to Tolkien, to the point that you can hardly equate this monstrosity to his world. The desecration of the Numenorians was especially sad for me. Huge waste of money. The show runners should hang their heads in shame. That Amazon is going ahead with a second season says it all really.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was looking forward to this show because I love Tolkien and so I was curious to see how a massive budget would work on his Second Age.
As such I was very forgiving and kept watching even when the quality just wasn't there. The series' narrative is broken into 4 stories; - The High Elves worried their world is fading and resolving to 'fix' it by creating an object of some kind to store and retain their power, which means they interact with Dwarves - a brave young girl who is part of a group of proto Hobbits interacting with a mysterious, bearded, magical stranger. - A soldier elf helping a group of people led by a single woman and her son, - A warrior Galadriel hunting Sauron and convincing the queen of Numenor to invade Middle Earth while getting to know a mysterious, charming (but sinister) stranger

Each of these stories unfurls slowly, ponderously and at times annoyingly. The entire narrative could have been covered in a third of the time and by far the most interesting is the stuff that sticks to Tolkien (note: for the most part the series butchers Tolkien). The quality of the writing is surprisingly bad, which makes few of the characters stand out and many of them seem completely uninteresting or cliched. The visuals are of a high quality however.

This is not the worst thing I've seen - it is far superior to the truly dreadful Wheel of Time series Amazon produced last year - but if it wasn't for the Tolkien link I'd have turned it off after episode 2.

Tolkien has written a great story with great, heroic and mythic characters and events. Amazon will hopefully overhaul its writing for season 2.

There's nothing about this show that strikes me as politically charged. With that out of the way, I'd say this is definitely worth a watch. The set design and overall aesthetics is breath-taking. It's awe-inspiring the landscapes, architectural design, costumes, everything! They obviously put a great deal of work and thought into this and they tried to include all the important bits from what is known of Tolkien's works.

However, there are some changes that some might not agree with. In these situations, as long as it's not such a large change that it is a completely different story, I don't mind. The question that always arises for me is simple: Is it a good story and enjoyable?

To both, I'd say unequivocally, yes. Very much so. The characters are fantastic and you get to see the pieces moving about where they were only talked about in books/stories/movies/etc.

The casting is top notch with very little that I'd disagree with or have changed. The dialogue is also excellent.

My ONLY real problem with this is that the show's pacing is a bit slow. They could've easily accomplished telling the same story in half or even a third of the time. It falls prey to consistently wallowing in it's own set design with gratuitous panning shots and setting up of scenes that were, in essence, already set up.

This is a pretty minor 'crime' however and in all honesty, if you enjoy the LOTR movies or the books, this will be enjoyable for all excluding contrarians. (And when do you EVER please them, really?)

7.5/10 with only a bump up to 8 because simply put: It was very enjoyable.

P.S. One last note: Ignore the people who say it doesn't 'match up with lore'. Not every single aspect needs to match a book. If the story is enjoyable and entertained you while managing to accomplish the overall result of the original story, then shaddup about 'lore this' and 'lore that'. Just enjoy it on it's own merits

Fan baiting show with gaslight marketing. I am apathetic to updating my review for this show beyond season one. Hey Amazon a life long Tolkien fan who doesn't care about a season two of this show. Good job, not...

Tolkien lore wise the depiction of Guy-lad-riel, Nuemiaroians and the Southlands are all wrong. Yeah I get normies don't care about the lore, but the writing, acting and story still sucks in TROP. The non lore ideas behind the creation of Mithiral and Mount Doom are laughably bad. Oh my all the big reveals at the end!!!??? This a prequel we know who is who and when live and when they die. The show has no surprises beyond the dumb lore breaks.

My gold standard for a reimagined IP that is well acted and well written is Ronald D Moore BSG. The WB Shadow of Mordor game has a way better Tolkien vibe than TROP. I finally figured a more apt name for this show. "The Repurposers of Power" just like in the creatively bankrupt vein of Star Wars TFA.

This show is no different than the dumpster fires of Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr Who, Predator, Aliens, Terminator, MCU, etc.. It is the current trend for talentless hacks to ruin well crafted franchises by talented artists of yesteryear. Like the Star Wars sequels did for prequels well I am betting TROP will do that for the Hobbit trilogy. Amazon spent nearly billion dollars all to elevate the WB Hobbit movies lmao. This is only season one of five oh deary me, better luck next time, oof!?

Galadriel is not suppose to be a soldier I believe, she is also a pyschopath who wants to commit genocide. It's even more horrible when you see the past peformances done by those who play her character and its done really well its not a problem with actresses this universe has shown that. Another problem with the show why is there a bloody wizard coming from the sky? They come from the boats. Why is their a Balrog in moria? they don't dig deep enough until the third age with Durin's bane. Why do the elves have short hair it just makes zero sense I guess they spent their whole budget on the Visuals which a great and couldn't afford to buy some wigs or maybe there's some shortage?? Why are the numernorians whinny and not 8ft peak of humanity? How come when they go on the expedition to middle earth they have three boats and somehow come out with 500 horses its really not that hard to copy and past those three boats and make it into 50. Browyn or however you say her name should be dead the plot armor is ridiculous and it makes no sense how she is the leader after being berated at the beginning of the season suddenly everyone looks to her for guidance? For a show with a rumored budget of $58m per episode they really must of spent $55m on visuals. The real problem is we are going to have to deal with atleast another season of this crap as they are already filming season 2. These showrunners should be fired and they should bring in peter jackson or someone who atleast has some respect for Tolkien I am not asking for word to word the Lord of the rings movies proved that you can stray from the literature but it shouldn't just albeit changing history because oooh Balrogs are cool watch season 2 and Hobbits are popular so lets put them in and don't forget about Wizards.

No one would care if the show didn't have the Harfoots they are all horrible pieces of crap who leave their own kin behind while a lot of them are all walking around contributing nothing. IT feels so forced to have them in because they where in the movies.

This show also has no sense of just how large the world is for the trip with Halbrand going back to the Elf capital would of taken like 3 months to do on horseback Tolkien always made very sure to mention the scale of the world and just how long it takes so 6 days to get back from the Southlands or now mordor with that sexy transition is ridiculous.

Dwarven women should have full beards If you don't like it thats just the way it is.

I get that they don't have the rights to the similarion but its not an excuse to make such a lackluster disaster if they wanted to disrespect Tolkien they didn't have to make a tv show could of just pissed on his grave. There's very few ups but I rated it 0 because it's just disrespectful to Tolkien the only reason Amazon got the rights was to put The Lord of the Rings in the title of their Generic fantasy show because they know the name has weight.

Oh, no no nooo! Episode 8 proves the show is garbage. I said I was out, but I had to see where this aberration would end up. The dialog is infantile. The forging of the rings is lore breaking. Celebrimbor is an idiot like Elrond. Halbrand is Sauron without being Annatar. It was clear from episode 1 that Halbrand was Sauron. No surprise there. A lot of standing around. The writing is TERRIBLE. Durin's Bane wakes up not from the digging too deeply but from a stupid soft leaf. LMAO. Season 2 will only be good if Bezos fires the showrunners for using the first season as an experiment. I just wished the season had ended with Sauron killing everybody. No survivors. It could be done since they are masters in breaking Tolkien's Lore anyway.

Galadriel can't be dumber. so many people have died because of her. he has no intelligence at all. the whole scenario is a soap bubble. 8 episodes for nothing. very different from Tolkien's books. it has many failures. also the black actors who became elves and dwarfs and hobbits. Tolkien will rise from his grave and hunt you all down. it would be best if there wasn't a second season but since you want to capitalize on Tolkien's name, at least fire all the slackers who are spoiling the project and hire professionals. who do you think will want to rewatch the episodes a second time? once and forced to see them because we are Tolkien fans. you could have made a masterpiece with the millions of dollars you say you spent but in the end you made a failure and that's only a failure to you because money is wasted. Top! Expand

I think that in the end, the creators did end up creating a very compelling and impressive first season, even if I did take issue with some of the decisions. Many of the elements did stand out to me, the music, production design, and visual effects were all very impressive, and helped to sell this is as a part of Middle Earth. I was surprised to see how much stylistically Rings of Power took from the Peter Jackson films, but I think this was a good choice as it makes it feel familiar, even though this show is by a different studio and directors. I think the storylines are overall very well set up, and provide variety to the tone and settings. There are quite a few changes to the lore, but I feel that most of them were justified for fitting the story into a television format. I hope with future seasons Rings of Power continues to improve, it's not uncommon for a show to really come into it's own in the 2nd season and I think that's a very likely outcome here. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show in general, no lore accounted for: The show does not look like a billion dollar show, the effects are at times good, at times 10-years-old-video game like, the acting is sub par with the exception of, of all characters, the ones that show all of 5 minutes, female frodo and female Sam(Nori and Poppy) all the rest of the cast feel forced and carton like, heck even Shannarah was better madel, the score is sub par as well, does not feel middle-earth-kind of epic

Now the worst part, regarding lore, but the page is not letting me write all that so I'll say only this, Harfoots being ancestors of Hobbits is like saying that Imladris is an older city than Rivendell, they are the same but in a different language, and they did not exist until 3rd age, as a branching from the race of men

Galadriel was the most powerful being in middle earth, one of the most powerful, wisest, kindest, fairest and loved being in the whole world, both ME and Valinor, almost as magically powerful as the Valar(gods) themselves, and WISE, not the assinine warmonger she is, she could raise mountains with a twist of her hand, so putting her in armor that she never wore, and wielding a sword, which she never touched, diminishes her, not empowers her

I would talk more about lore attrocities, as most of the show is an attrocitie itself, but meta wil stop me from doing so

The writing is terrible, the dialogue subpar, the lore of Tolkien is absolutely mangled into oblivion. Main protagonist Galadriel is insufferable and the most annoying character in the entire show. All characters are forgettable and when they die or fake die, I don't care. Drama and strife is forced on the viewer and it is painfully obvious. The Sauron reveal is the most heavy-handed, obvious and pathetic thing I have ever seen in film ever. I can't believe there are people out there who actually love this travesty so much to give it a 10. I'd give this maybe a 2 in a vaccuum, but this is the real world. It turns downright silly and nonsensical by making characters unlikable and the plot lines seem trivial. It’s not that they create great characters to root against, but rather you just want it to hurry up to something that seems to matter. I think to enjoy it you have to come in with low expectations and just accept it isn’t really designed to tie into the Jackson movies or books, other than loosely drawing from them for general and altered references. In other spots it seems to contradict what we would expect with elves often being portrayed as short humans with little foresight, self-control, reasoning, or wisdom, then seemingly important moments really just being a matter of coincidence and chance. Overall uninteresting and anti-climatic with no fight scenes or high drama moments that make any lasting impact other for being silly. Expand

It’s a Dungeon and Dragon Fan Fiction not the lord of the rings.

The pace is terribly slow, the elves doesn’t look like Middle earth elves but rip of from any d&d, dragon age game.

The OG character (Elrond, Galadriel) are not respected and are totally different people (not the same psychology).

CGI are expansive but at the same time look like a Green Screen Festival.

Locations looks empty and void, Khazad Dhum or Valinor, it looks like they are 10 people at max in each scene.

The Hobbits look like junkies of the forest.

This show borrow the name « LOTR » but represent something totally different and superficial that look empty on the surface and in the details.

The writers have taken so many liberties with Tolkien's Middle Earth history, you need to look at it as a completely different story unrelated in anyway to his writings. For example, this story takes place in the First Age, about 3,000+ years before the LOTR's Third Age. Galadriel stated that her husband Celeborn was dead, when at no time in any of the writings does Tolkien present that story line. There is a great deal of conjecture if the "Old Visitor" is Gandalf. Per Tolkien's writings, the wizards (Istari), 5 in total, do not arrive in Middle Earth until the Third Age; thus, neither Gandalf, Saruman, Radigast nor the other unamed wizards should even be considered in these stories.

Again, while it is enjoyable as such, it should be looked at as a completely separate story with similarly named characters to Tolkien's stories.

All the people complaining and hating without constructive criticism are just missing on the fact that they have the opportunity to revisit middle earth in a glorious way. The craftsmanship of this show is off the charts. Personally, I like a slow paced show that takes it's time for world building and character development, which this show gave to me, though I'll admit some scenes got dragged out. Wasn't such a big problem for me, personally. Overall, I'm eagerly waiting for season 2 after that great finale and I'm pretty confident it will be a step up. The story, places and characters have been woven, and the finale gets us to a point in the storyline where every plot is focused, and moving forward. Expand

But clearly the main reason for that is because the show runner are fully realized that their one and only strongest point of this whole presentation, is the world that Tolkien has carefully crafted back in the days. What they've forgot, is that Tolkien builds all the character in his story with the same amount of attention that the world would've gotten. So when your source material is solely a footnotes of the world once has been completed, this shows falls exactly the same scenario as The Hobbits Trilogy did, by making the characters in that story as stereotypical as possible.

Lastly, the visual effects is not even that impressive honestly. I would love if with all that budgets they are pouring, we could get a cinematic experiences of the camera zooming in and out, tracking and overlapping throughout this expensive looking background. The same way Blade Runner 2049 does. But surely, hiring an established cinematographer is not in their capacity. So, the end result of that near 1 billions of a budgets just became nothing more than just an expensive looking backgrounds.

The costumes are hilarious; Numenorians with man boobs armour. Elfs in maternity gowns. Galadriel is the most annoying thing I have ever seen in my life. This thing is not Tolkien. It is laughable and downright insulting. Insulting to the fans, to Tolkien’s genius and to the audience intelligence. Expand

Has no basis in actual Toklien lore. They literally have made everything up with bits and pieces from the LOTR appendices, used names of characters, reused lines from the movies/books and thats IT. It is terrible.

Really poor. Really wanted to like this but very amateurish. More like watching the world of Smurfs, or Willow…. very unconvincing. Slow, terrible dialogue and not fun to watch.

Great show! I don't get the hate. The pacing is a bit slow, but I like it because they're are doing a lot of world- and character building. Maybe attention span is what a lot of people are missing these days. Looking forward to season 2!

That's the all show sum up. I mean why hire bad writters don't they look at the resume of this people? Are they just friends of a producer?
The only good thing it's the photography and the dwarfs but even that has flaws. Please hire someone better someone that actually cares for the lore

I liked the way the show was built even though there were some pacing and storytelling issues. It fits the Tolkien universe well enough, given time compression requirements for the story.

Great production. The photograpy of the series is brilliant, it has changed the scale and the way to watch fantasy series. The actors are very good, all clearly embrace their roles and knew how to bring to fans new and old their roles.

About the story itself, it has a rhythm tempo, increasing in grandeur and events near the end, very much like what happens in the books of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

Yes, there are changes/adaptations of the Lore de Tolkien. But, I liked the adaptations, they are very well made and necessary, in view of the copyright acquired only from the Second Age, appendages and Third Age.

It's sad when a work like this ends endlessly, I'm already looking forward to the next episodes.

So far so good, meeting to expectations to tolkien fans. Tolkien world is completely different from other authors work, there are so many stories happening in single world and prime is portraying them just perfect. One ring to rule them all!!!
