My wedding ring is from the very makers of the One Ring in Peter Jackson's adaptations - I love the series that much. The pace of the show is rushed in important areas like character and world development while being laborious and long in areas where I felt like dozing off. Galadriel is an annoyance, which is a shame since she is supposed to be the main character. The first two episodes don't make me care about the characters, or the world, and that breaks my heart. The cinematography and CGI is beautiful, but it is overshadowed by terrible dialogue and lore inaccurate story lines. Amazon should have known better... Expand

I gave it 3/10 because its lord of the rings. For a fantasy show 5/10

Many of the characters dont resemble the characters we know from the movies.

Black elves and dwarves? I mean come on. Does EVERYTHING have to be woke these days?? Whats wrong with elves and dwarves being all white like they're supposed to be? Elves are known to all be tall, white, long haired and beautiful while dwarves are known to be hairy, bearded, short and very stubborn but honest and loyal, but also all white.

Whats next?

Stick to the movies and books. Its also too boring somehow, not nearly enough epic battles and that gritty darkness and sense of dread and horror we are used to from the movies.
for example when the nazgul came for the first time, i was absolutely terrified.

dont ruin the show!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show insults our intelligence with dumb dialogues, woke propaganda and cringe action scenes. "Galadriel" defeats a troll single handed using a man as a stepping stone. How symbolic that scene really was. Completely disrespects the world created by Tolkien. One more disguised show trying to push the same old hateful message: Women are all perfect, Men are all bad. The music score is good. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If there is anything left of Tolkien in this mess, it's no more than 10% or so.

There is nothing magical about the Elves anymore. Short hair, multiracial, no glow, no thoughtful dialogue... They're just like real people now.

Hobbits are multiracial, and don't look short anymore. They also look like real people... that are filthy and homeless.

Dwarves are multiracial. And there are white southerners too. Middle earth is now modern earth.

The fantasy is gone from this fantasy setting.

Too many plotlines that go nowhere. Costumes are cheap. Galadriel struggles with all the cowardly and weak men in the world. She is strong independent woman, don't need no man, and yet she is constantly put down by them.

Why do everyone detest elves? Where does this come from? Because casual racism is needed somehow?

With Elrond's plotline, the show appears to be pro industrialism. Maybe he'd like to burn down a forest to further his goal.
Everyone knew this would happen. It's still disappointing.

They have no idea what Tolkien was writing about, do they?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My heart is bleeding...

From the beginning, the Amazon Rings of Power series wanted to put itself on a par with Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. Amazon does not live up to this claim, paid for with 1 billion dollars. Money is not everything. So I'll start with the positive aspects:

-With the money, tremendous and partly even coherent images were created. Valinor and Khazad-Dum look very good. One wishes for slower camera movements to absorb more details. And here we come to the limit of the short CGI sequences: They are just facades. (Khazad-Dum was a bit more detailed due to the longer scenes.) Still, it's no comparison to the companions' journey through Moria (Khazad-Dum) and Gandalf's arrival at Minas Tirith in the original Lord of the Rings films by Peter Jackson. -The images in the series are accompanied by good music. Sauron's theme sounds intimidating and threatening - great! At other points, however, the music falls short of expectations. An example: Everyone will still have the atmospheric sound of the Shire of the Jackson films by Howard Shore in their ears. The ancestors of the hobbits of the Amazon series have their own theme. It's quite cute, but it doesn't invite to dream like the masterpiece of Howard Shore.

-The acting of Disa and Durin in the presence of Elrond in the second episode was a bright spot. Unfortunately, the imposing images described at the beginning can't hide the negative aspects of the series.

Weak dialogues and partly very weak storytelling (our main character jumps off the boat in the middle of the ocean with no chance of rescue and of course she gets lucky when she meets the remains of a ship's crew). On the whole, I have to admit to myself that the presentation of the story around Galadriel (our main character) is so weak that I don't even know where to start. The actress can't do anything for the narration. In the films of Peter Jackson, Elves were rehearsed choreographies. Posture, elegance, and expressiveness. In two scenes that I personally noticed, the actress of Galadriel loses face. She plays a millennia-old, high-born Elf who has seen a lot... bad Quote incoming (you have not seen what i have seen) and she seems unfortunately simply - human. Driven by revenge for her brother without putting the greater good in the foreground.

Conclusion

If you love Tolkien's books and appreciate Peter Jackson's first trilogy, then you probably won't have an easy time diving into Tolkien's world with Amazon's new series.

The storyThe show is very pretty and has high production quality, the acting is decent and the music is good. The script is bad at times. The dialogues are inconsistent, some of them are good, some of them are extremely weird/nonsensical. The story has several logical flaws and only a few interesting arcs so far, but if you don't think about it too much you can live with that. Overall I'd say: you can clearly see they put a lot of money into this, but ultimately it feels a bit like Amazon itself, empty and soulless. Purely on the quality I'd give 4.5/10, but I have deducted two point because Amazon is actively censoring IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes reviews and ratings (I saw reviews and ratings disappearing with my own eyes). Don't believe any ratings you see on these sites, they are manipulated. Expand

I have seen hours of conservative video about how woke and bad this was going to be. I started the first episode chanting "No woke, no woke, no woke" and after 2 episodes I found nothing I would call woke. I fell into the fantasy by the second scene. IMO, if this wasn't so negatively hyped we would not see these ratings. Characters. The main character, Galadriel, is quickly unlikeable but not in a accidental way. She is obsessed with a coming darkness, and so isn't lovable and care free. The only mistake I can see so far is here trying to swim what would be the Atlantic ocean. The hobbits don't like what we expect, but they are just coming out, they are in hiding and in fear. They had their fancy clean homes in the shire because the rangers protected them. The dwarves were awesome. Music. Good, but not memorable. No memorable themes.

Dialogue. The dialogue is good, with the occasional poetic and dire lines which come off well and what you would expect in a Tolkien story. Woke. The only thing you could call woke is the fact that there are races you do not expect. That said, Tolkien built his world around our own, with Europe as middle earth. It is not a stretch to imagine our own races would be there as Tolkien included Arabic people in the world. Why wouldn't dwarves and elves go through whatever made the various races. The whole world loves Tolkien, and they want to see themselves in what is going on. I don't think it's being politically correct, I think it's just opening the world up for more people to put themselves into it. This review is my opinion based on the first 2 episodes.

At that time Tolkien was not so well known outside the Anglo-Saxon culture. It was an unforgettable experience, a real journey into another universe. He was one of the authors who pushed me to become a writer. However, I am not a Tolkien fan, much less a "purist". I understand that a movie or a television series has different needs than a book.

My opinion on the first episodes of the new series "The Rings of Power", however, is negative. This is a fantasy series like many others, done quite well, without honors or glory, however. A pleasant but unpretentious Sword & Sorcery. But it has nothing to do with Tolkien, although it is set in the world he created. Perhaps the only Tolkenian "touch" are the Harfoots, who — I must say — have been represented quite well. Elves are basically Humans with pointy ears. All their power, their magic, their connection with the land, remains in the background, that is, it is only a faint echo of what Tolkien had written.

But the worst part is that today all movies are becoming a bad copy of the worst Marvel movies, namely the latest. The scene of Galadriel jumping into the sea and thinking of swimming halfway across the ocean to return to Middle-earth is simply ridiculous. Clearly it was done because the writers did not find an alternative ploy for her "rebellion". Tolkien might have waited months to come up with an idea, but he wouldn't write a line until he found a likely one. Similarly, the descent of the meteorite is a bit too reminiscent of Superman and the various DC television series.

Then there is a "delicate" question that must be addressed sooner or later. American culture is a culture still steeped in racism and homophobia, fear of the different and discrimination. We have also seen this recently with the sentence on abortion. Thus, to compensate and because of a certain sense of guilt, the world of American cinema and television is trying to put in every film and television series a cast that should represent an example of respect for "diversity" as it is conceived in the modern American culture, especially in relation to people of color and LGBTQ+.

This is a "modern" problem, linked only to the last centuries of our history. This approach, however, although noble in principle, cannot and must not distort the meaning of every plot and story that is imagined, but must be applied where possible. I am not talking about the fact that there is a black elf, because in the end, although it is not consistent with Tolkien's view of the Elves which, I remember, has its roots more in Finnish than Celtic mythology, it is not such a serious problem.

The problem is more noticeable when dealing with the true Tolkenian diversity, too advanced to be acceptable to American culture, made above all of image and substance, that is the female Dwarves. Beyond the ten-year diatribe as to whether female Dwarves have beards or not, for Tolkien they resemble males in every way. They should therefore have the same nose, the same faces, the same build. But this would be difficult to accept for the average American, imbued with the principle that women must necessarily be "beautiful" and moreover according to the Western culture's standards. So the females of the Dwarves are short, a little round, but then they stop there, they don't go further. The females of Dwarves are basically beautiful.

Therefore, when they have to face a real diversity, one not linked to modern social conflicts, alien to the way of thinking of 20th century society, they can't do it, showing that all the rules imposed by American cinema on diversity are simple hypocrisy, all image and no substance. On the other hand, even in the LGBTQ+ sphere, the British in television series are far ahead of the Americans. Just think of Torchwood. Even in the field of diversity, Americans will always and in any case remain "puritans".

I am not even going to go into ruining the established lore, I am going to plainly overview the show itself. What we get is a generic, absolutely empty fantasy show that hid itself behind a world-known name. It could (infact it should) easily be an origianl title, or DnD series, or anything else. Characters are for best dull, for worst they are actually irritating! The writing is awful! The only thing this series is good at is actually doing what it was made for - delivering "the message". Unlike Rogue One for example, this show is utterly empty on the story side of things, so you actually are going to hate the main character (yes, it's Galadriel) from the very first scenes. The dialogs are just hillarious. They drop some totally sensless grandiloquent phrases all the time... "You have not seen what I have seen"... "I have seen what I have seen"... "They have seen what they have seen?" For real? Is that a show based on one of world's best book series? The show is a total amaturity. And yes, we can see it from episode one, so there is no point in watching it further. Save your time and go read a book instead, or spend an evening with your family. Expand

Tolkien in name only, it has nothing of the Pathos of the real LOTR books or movies....just a dull Bathos. A waste of money and a waste of time for those who have the stomach to watch it to the end.

At the core of any production is the script. No amount of lipstick can amend a compromised story. Unfortunately, the same downfall to the last seasons in Game of Thrones is at play in the Rings of Power.

For any writer, this would be the most challenging task of their lives to stand in the ring with the Professor. It's painfully apparent that the production suffers from the Dunning-Kruger effect. The script is fraught with issues ranging from pacing, positioning, characterization, and pail attempts at sounding Tolkienian. Characters behave in ways that the plot demands but are unbelievable when you think about it. No sane person would attempt to swim across an entire ocean on their own!

The greatest flaw of this show is that it fails to be escapism. This is mostly the marketing's fault for being hyper-fixated on what should be the least important aspect of a fantasy journey. If RoP survives to future seasons, I can only hope that Amazon stops trying to lean on allegories to the modern-day as a crutch (and shield) for the subpar writing.

Let alone anyone from the Federated States of Micronesia or even Muslim Elfs, is it that difficult to put a Hijab on an elf? Like seriously, Wtf! If Tolkien’s related stories, if you want to call them that, cannot embrace anti-white multiculturalism like all other Hollywood producers(Top Gun the exception) then it should be cancelled!! Why give these white nerds any entertainment at all? Also, I am seriously disappointed in the lack of teenage LGBTQ+ representation, does Tolkien have us believe that in middle earth there is no isoflavones or soy products available for gender affirmation. Obviously these producers did not follow the proper required Checklist before getting their project greenlighted. I did not see any persons of color as female lesbians recast as characters once played by crusty old while men – disappointed!!! So please redo with Gandalf recast with POC LGBTQ+ representation and all will be forgiven. Morons! Expand

So long as visuals and diverse casting is met, everything else can fall by the wayside. This move toward "inclusiveness" based on reality and co-opting someone's work to fit someone else's agenda is, and has always been, at the expense of fiction. Fiction is what it is because it doesn't need to fall in line with reality. Reality can influence fiction but exists apart from fiction, and fiction apart from reality. If this weren't the case, we'd be discussing non-fiction. Fiction is not non-fiction.

People often seek fiction to leave behind reality, even if only for a moment, because our real world problems are not what we want to focus on. We want to see another world's problems from another person's perspective, and come out of the fictional world with new insights.

What's beautiful about fiction is that events, people, and places in fictional worlds are unique to the creator. They might sometimes be based (in varying levels) on reality, but they're different from reality and different from one creator to another. Tolkien's world was based on medieval Europe, but is a place with all colors of skin, all levels of height and weight, all varieties of accents and speech, but a (general) separation of peoples for various reasons. They do come together to accomplish great things, but they are not normally intermingled together.

Forcing those things beyond the creator's vision muddies and sullies the story that was built up around those things, and will almost always invariably result in bad reviews by unpaid critics (your average viewer), especially those who were great fans of the original works. You can chalk it up to racism, sexism or some other -ism, but that's mostly fiction. The reality of the matter is that you co-opted someone else's vision to suit your own agenda, and people don't like that, regardless the social or political gang colors they wear. Diversity of actors, in terms of color, gender, or sexual identity is perfectly fine. Take stories that already include the diversity you're looking for, and build that world. Or create new ideas with the amount of diversity you're looking for, and build that world. This is only as difficult as creators want to make it. If it's "too hard" to build something new with the ideas you're looking for, that's on you. Not the story or the world that needs to be built. Build your own worlds, or use worlds that closely match what you're looking for in a story. Don't steal from others and pretend for, whatever reason, that it's "okay" or "this is what he would have wanted". You're mixing up fiction with reality and all you'll end up with is a broken, poorly reflective imitation of reality and truth, and if it's not true reality, it's fiction. Co-opting TV, film, and streaming services are living in fictional worlds while destroying other people's fictional worlds. And that's why you'll continue to see bad reviews on stories that ventured too far beyond the creator's vision. At least what DC and Marvel have is alternate realities, that have explored variations in timelines and people. These companies and creators did that. So it's easy to incorporate all the possibilities across universes. Tolkien's world does not have alternate universes, and this world of make-believe is not his vision anymore. It's become someone else's agenda.

And yet the script and direction look like a very cheap TV series where the plot is driven solely by dialogue, and where so few locations are shown as if it were a sitcom. Scenes are resolved in two acts. And the characters don't live in their world, they act out the script.
That's too bad.

How dare they use black characters and three dimentional women characters, that's not Tolkien's idea of middle earth.

The changes are the logical ones when adapting books to TV, nothing relevant there. As for the hate these series have recieved, I find it's a social trend to critizice what others do with little reason at all, just the "fashion" to follow what's fun. In their minds, there is an agenda behind everything and "a secret empire" is trying to brainwash them, so they sell themselves as "social warriors" to impress simple minds. Returning to the show, beautiful Telperion and Laurelin! very nice to see hobbits there, Galadriel trying to fit her own moral standards is epic to see (no Celeborn, though). Seeing a dwarven famly is a gift for some of us who have used dwarves in role playing games and miniature wargames. I can't wait for the next episode! Expand

I'd prefer to go back and watch "The Hobbit" movies in extended than watching this crap. Some of the visuals are nice but the writing is crap. It feels like a crappy tv show with LOTR lore.

You are pathetic people trying to impose their own abominations using Tolkien. Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars you've spent and the cutting-edge technology, you've done a terrible job. Because you're idiots devoid of art and logic.

Isso não é sr dos anéis, não é uma obra de Tolkien, é só mais um parasitismo da nova fase de Hollywood que está destruindo tudo de bom pois não é capaz de criar nada.

Blasphemy, there is no Tolkien in here. The only positive is CGI, sometimes music and dwarves. Rest is just disgustingly boring, dialogues are cringe and pseudointelectual. I do not recommend it.

I have only one question, who stole the money allocated for this series? For at least the first two episodes, Terrible acting, no canonicity, cheap costumes, I'm disappointed.

JFC... Tolkien just rolling in his grave. Another example of dirty money-making by exploiting well-known creations.
