I can assure you I am not a troll — in fact, I was genuinely excited and enthusiastic when the series was announced. Sadly, after watching the first two episodes (which felt more like a slog or doing homework than coming along on a grand adventure) I can write my expectations are crushed. It’s all been said in the other reviews — beautiful scenery and expensive wardrobes can’t save basic, paint by numbers bad writing and plotting, cardboard thin and cliche characters, action sequences that unintentionally play as farce or comedy even, etc. Im done with it. I will not watch another episode unless by some miracle Amazon decides to replace each and every show runner, writer and producer who worked on this first season. Expand

This show is a complete travesty and an insult to Tolkien's memory, his legacy and all his fans. Anyone who gives it a positive rating clearly never read any of the books or is just on Amazon's payroll. I could write a massive review airing all my grievances with this dumpster fire but that would be redundant and also below my dignity. Suffice to say it's just generic fantasy garbage larping as a LotR adaptation. It's tacky, it's lowbrow and it's tasteless. Perhaps even more-so than Game of Thrones. PS - MetaCritic is the only site which doesn't hide or mass purge negative reviews like IMDB (owned by Amazon) or Rotten Tomatoes does. Expand

I won't even be watching to see how bad the remainder of the series is, and we are considering boycotting amazon as a whole because this is very obviously a cash grab investment that has been pushed by investors to take elements of a superhero series to try and reach as wide a market as possible. To amazon the fans are nothing but a number on a financial spreadsheet. And they have been cast aside as an acceptable loss in pursuing higher returns. Expand

I enjoyed also the beauty of simple things, the manners of the language, talking about how to enjoy things like light, feels, the use of methaphor....it's nice.

But there are to many bads in the show to give it a good grade, to put it in one word, sadly it's woke. Seems like the enemy all the time is society, the characters are settled in their little universes, elves, man, hobbits....the characters want to do things and the people close to them let them know that is not wanted, they must quit their dreams and join the fold, which they do not and they are righteous to do so, even when they're not. Galadriel may as well and up triumpht for pusuing the evil and not giving up, but she does not come relatable at all to me, she's just stuburn and entitled.

You can see also interacial relationships everywhere and mixed color people everywhere, and it just puts out of place, at least for me as a fan of the books. The world of Tolkien is vast, the regions of Middle Earth that wee see on the movies and in this TV show are really a small part of the world which would be the equivalent of Europe in our world, to the East and south there are plenty more regions in which other men live. I could get people from the East visiting and being there, but the show presents it like the settlements have mixed etnicities as a normal thing, and, again, it puts you off, does not feel natural.

I would feel the same if the show took place in the East for example (which I would welcome to see, a story of the blue mages for example), and suddlendly you see the cities filled with white people.

And seeing woman dwarves with no beard..... The story so far does not catch you anywhere. You can pass the time watching it and it's obviously selling you that something is going to happen, Sauron returning and all but I don't really care much for any of the storylines.

Laslty, if you know about the books, you'll see that the show is quite different, the map and events from the first age are wrong, the whole Sauron story is wrong (he was not haunted for example and considered to be good), the king of the elves was not so blind and careless, he was actually the one thinking a danger was coming, the elves did not need permission to go back to Valinor, they did not have elves watching people accross middle Earth, no things falling out of the sky, Mithril was already being discovered, the gate of Kazad dun did not exist yet, the one with dwarf friend was Celebrimbor.....Many many things that are wrong and they are like that because the showrunners chose to, and they also chose to use original characters instead of canon ones, which they are not in the show.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong about doing something new and original, but if you want to do that, do something entire new, don't take an already made story and change it to something else. It seems that you only do that to exploit the already stablished fame of that art and get an easy cash grab.

It's no doubt that a lot of people were prepared to hate it no matter what. Firstly, there has been a lot of care and attention to the scenery, the music, and the CGI. Shooting in New Zealand was a great choice (although I'm biased, as that's my home). I don't think the costumes have had the same attention to weathering and general wearing in as they had in the Lord of the Rings movies or Game of Thrones. After the first episode I was pretty angry, as it was far worse than I thought it would be, however I definitely softened after the second episode. The dwarves are done well, and there is some proper characterisation and interaction that was entertaining. As far as the diversity goes, that's just a factor of today's world. If it wasn't multi racial, then it would have been cancelled for not being progressive enough. This doesn't mean though that it destroys the show though. Look at something like The Great as an example. It's also colour blind, but a very funny and engaging show. Unfortunately here, there is not a strong story or good dialog. I realise we are only two episodes in, however, the comments on this not being Tolkien's world are accurate. This is a generic fantasy story set in a somewhat Tolkienesque world. I think it's a valid criticism that the writers have not respected the source material, at all. I think the real mistake was in the way the show has been marketed from the outset. If you are old enough to remember back to when Lord of the Rings was released, Peter Jackson did regular youtube updates talking about progress and the way that he was interpreting and adapting the source material. Before the movies were released we knew that he loved the book, understood it, and was really trying to deliver something that fans would enjoy. Unfortunately Rings of Power have had cast interviews where they talked more about the progressive elements of the script - the first female black dwarf etc. It has given the view that being progressive and at times political is more important than the underlying story. It's the same issue that fans had with Star Wars ("The force is female"). Going to war against your own fandom or trying to preach to them is unfortunately only going to result in what we are seeing now. We now have fans who believe that the stories they love are being weaponised to push an agenda - even if it's not really the case. In summary, the show looks very pretty. It's obviously had a lot of love and attention, but would have benefited for the same amount of love and attention to a lot of other areas as well. I really don't think this is going to be the Game of Thrones replacement that Amazon was hoping for, and I would be very surprised it makes it to season 5 as they are hopiong. Expand

Expand

Also, the story is presented in a very bad way. Even for those who do not know the middle earth, there is a confusion that takes place on a boring and tiring level. Most of the actors could not devote themselves to the production and created a soulles environment. It looks more like fan-made mundane work than a cinematic piece. The music is not bad but the use of music in the series is very bland and amateurish. So much so that any thematic music was used for different event focuses. Unfortunately the only positive comment I can make about the series so far will be about the descriptions of middle-earth places... Expand

I knew it was bound to be controversial and I wanted to give it a try, but thats unwatchable. If you want to watch anything "Lord of the Rings" related, you will not find it here. They have created a generic fantasy show, slapped some Names created by Professor Tolkien on it and called it "Lord of the Rings". Even if you take away their blatant piggybacking on more creative minds, this isnt worth watching. Its focus on controversial current year politics takes every bit of fantasy out of the script, their inaptitude to tell compelling stories denies all immersion, their disregard for character arcs ruins even the most unimportant original side character. It is not a Zero or a One, the visuals are sometimes stunning to behold. That is thanks to the visual effects artists, whose work is the only thing consistently great in modern Hollywood. If you must see for yourself, watch the first episode. But overall, there is sadly nothing in recent TV or cinema history I would recommend less. Expand

Princess Disa (I think is how you spell it?) And Durin I thought brought some much needed emotion to the show and actually made Elrond look better as a result. He was like a different person among the dwarves. I think the elves alone seem to be the worst part of the show and the reason everyone hates it during the first episode. The way they try to make every mundane conversation into poetry is extremely annoying. And then a lot of the things they say don't even make sense even metaphorically. A rock sees only downwards?? They would have been better off making elves communicate telepathically and just act with only body language except when communicating with other races. Or big brain idea... Have them speak ELVISH with subtitles. I'd be very surprised if episode 3 turned this series' fortunes around, as of right now, the majority of the plot seems like utter rubbish. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is such a dissapointing two wasted hours of my life. A truly terrible adaptation from TOLR appendixes. Bad script, terrible acting, completely boring, story jumps from group to group in a completely disjointed manner. Obvious tolkenizaiton and gender, race, LGBTQ quota checkboxes that they ticked off which completely takes me out any kind of immersion into LOTR world. Elves has short hair, the males seem feminist, Galadriel is supposed to be some kind of war lord but seems more like a Karen. The Hobbits or whatever are mostly all little girls and what's the point of them in this age? This show is utter garbage and a billion dollar waste. Expand

First off, the anti-woke 0 & 1 star comments are off their rocker and are a distraction to the real criticisms of the show. The pushback against these reviews is valid.

Now on to the review... It's boring.

The visuals and music are epic, especially for a TV show, but what is on screen doesn't match except at the most shallow level. The show does a bad job of setting up an overall context for what happens. There is little to drive the story forward except a general, "Yeah some people think something bad will happen sometime in the future". That's made even worse because most of the people in the show don't share, or act like they share, that view, and make a good case why they shouldn't.

The show would have been better off if it had started by showing the growing threat, and given a reason why the main characters should know about it. That would have given a sense of urgency that was lacking in many scenes.

Another thing the show should have done was to show more of the conflict that shaped the main characters. Many are deeply driven to act the way the do, but the audience has been given little reason to feel what those characters feel. Even when a reason is given for one character, it is undercut by the fact that reason happened so long ago. The result of all this is that the actions of the main characters feel like character flaws instead of a heroic drive.

Really really dull

Script: Full of sudo-wise quotes that don’t make sense 2/10

Costumes:
Men: 7.5
Nothing stands out - looks decent Dwarves: 8
Harfoots: 1
If you can embroid, you can make clean edges to items of clothing. They shouldn’t all be torn and in rags.
Elves: 2 Doesn’t look like they read Tolkien’s description of them - their armour looks like plastic figurines.

CGI:
5 average - very expensive. I don’t feel it will have an enduring staying power. It looks too clean and uniform. We see hundreds of entirely identical elven ships. Most of the elves in amour look like a copy and past in a computer.
World doesn’t look lived in - has a stock footage quality for selling TVs Kinda documentary feeling in first episode - strange for a high fantasy.

Don’t recommend you watch.

The audio design is absolutely abysmal. I know Hollywood is famous for its questionable decisions regarding audio design these days, but this is just rediculous . The difference between the action scenes and talking scenes is so extreme that even with me constantly adjusting the remote, I still couldn't really hear the talking scenes and the action scenes were blasting my ears to the point of pain. I ended up enabling subtitles just to try and get a comfortable viewing experience. Definitely the worst audio design I have seen in modern film. Some of the visuals are nice, but others seem out of play or sparse. I'm giving this 1 point above 0 for the visuals, but they are far from a saving grace. I don't know how much money was spent making this, but it was far too much. Expand

Watched the first two episodes as I was willing to give this show a chance.

The show disappoints for numerous reasons and falls short in pretty much everyway. The exception is the visuals of the environments which are all spectacular. The visual effects artists have done exceptional work.

I don’t believe the show has been graded effectively as the Lord of the Rings films were. This lack of final polish, unfortunately leaves the characters like the elves just looking like humans with pointy ears in good cosplay. The shows visual style lacks the ethereal effect the the team working on Lord of the Rings achieved so well.

Unfortunately all other areas of the show are mediocre at best. Wooden stilted acting from pretty much the entire cast does not lend to believability or bring impact to the story… if feels as if I’m watching actors walking around in costumes rather than characters living in a real (fantasy) world. The actors are probably doing their best with mediocre writing and a nonsensical narrative; it is fairly obvious none of them actually believe in or are living the role, they are simply reading lines from a script.

The writing is nonsensical with a plot that jumps around with out any rhyme or reason. Even though I am fairly well versed in Tolkien, I was confused by the motivations and desires of the characters… but then it dawned on me, these characters are NOT the characters from Tolkiens Legendarium, they have the same names but are not the same characters. They are merely corporate creations, doppelgängers if you will, that have replaced the characters Tolkien invented.

I do have sympathy for the writers, however inept the job they have done is. As Amazon only had the rights to the appendecies of the Lord of the Rings, and could not use material from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, History of Middle Earth and so on there was not much to work with. I understand a lot of the narrative and plot had to be written from scratch with only a vague outline to go on.

This brings me to my main point. This show should never have been made in the first place as the creative team never had the rights to the material that would allow a show like this to succeed.

It screams of Amazon wanting their own high fantasy ‘Games of Thrones’ and merely using the recognition of ‘The Lord of Rings’ as a marketing tool to sell their mediocre product. A well know quote from Ian Malcolm comes to mind.

I leave my review of the first two episodes of the series.
In my personal opinion the beginning of the series is quite weak. The interpretation of some canonical characters are far removed from their literary counterpart. Lady Galadriel shows an unseemly and annoying rebelliousness, adding that she shows no wisdom. Especially the fact that she lived in the kingdom of Doriath in Beleriand years ago and it seems that all teachings of Melian were left aside in this version. In reference to Lord Elrond and Celebrimbor, there is not much to say, except the physical appearance that is not very successful. The story of the elf Arondir and the woman is completely unnecessary; the argument that tries to bring the couple closer is bad and relapses into cliché. In the case of hobbits, I quite liked it. It brings freshness to the slow central argument, despite the fact that no character is canonical. Likewise, the contribution of the meteorite character generates additional intrigue. Finally, the most redeemable so far are the scenes of Kahzad dum. The characterization of the male dwarfs is very well done, even the challenge invented in the series, winks at Vala Aulë himself, the one who created the Naugrim; more resilient in all deadly physical sorrow than other races. In the end, the series does not promise what it announced, however, there may be further development as it progresses.

Letting aside the fact that this series disrespects and subverts Tolkiens works, the show lacks any soul and point.

I cannot identify with the quest of any character, I do not believe their motivations, I do nor care about their feelings, I am not anxious about their fate because there is no serious threat from no one, since Galadriel will save everyone simply because she is a woman (and hence the Chosen One and perfect in every imaginable aspect) without any effort, struggle, and specially without any moral self questioning (because, again, since she is a woman, everything she decides by herself is right, and everyone who does not follow her is wrong or will be proven wrong).

All of the characters are depicted as plane, one-dimensional souls. Everyone except Galadriel is dumb and inefficient (specially men) and do not have any clue about anything that is happening in the world, until they are enlightened by the perfect being that is She, the Chosen One.

CGI is perfect, with stunning views of cities and landscapes, but then when the action cuts to the actual place, there is no continuity, places seem small and lack the detail that was shown in the CGI pictures.

Yet the worst part is the dialog and the performance of the main characters. No word is said in a believable way, no compelling emotions are transmitted (nor in voice tone nor in facial expression). And the words themselves make no sense either. They are complicated and convoluted in a way that makes them difficult to grasp, until the moment in which you pay particular attention to the meaning and discover that they mean nothing, just a bunch of fancy words put together to appear grandiose and important, but without any rational or emotional meaning. Like a politician addresses a difficult question by pronouncing complicated words without saying anything, the characters in this ROP world speak the language of plain, self evident and uninteresting concepts in a way that mimics poetry and wisdom, but lack any of those.

Would all of this matter if the series wasn't about Lord of the rings? No, really not. I would just stop watching it in the exact moment I did with this episode and forget it.

Would I be writing this review if the series wasn't about Lord of the rings? No, definitely not.

But the show runners decided to disrespect and subvert Tolkien's works for their own profit and personal ambitions, and something must be done to (at least) send them a message.

Visually it looks fantastic but at the heart and soul of it it is empty and swallow and doesn’t feel like Tolkien at all.

This first episode doesn't sound like one. No presentation of the timeline, you have to digest a lot of information about the world, the characters, bad and good guys but still you don't understand the purpose of this show.
All the characters look british (no offense) and their acting is really bad. I was really disappointed that the dialogs between elves have been act in english and not in elvish as you should expected from a multirace fantasy franchise.
CGI is not good not bad and fortunatelly they still can fly helicopters to take beautiful landscapes from NZ however the OST is inexistant.
Finally costumes and armor look cheap as hell. Next time call me if you need a wardrobe's door to dress somebody in the most uncomfortable way we would recommend you to purchase some at a sweedish furniture store I know.

Not Lord of the Rings, they are just using the name but it has nothing to do with what Tolkien has written. Even if it were it´s own thing, it would still be a very bad generic copycat fantasy. Avoid this woke garbage.

CGI landscapes were beautiful. Some of the first age description was accurate. I wish we had gotten to see that show. Anyway, some of the character changes (Galadriel) were a bridge too far. Galadriel was a powerful witch, not a warrior. TheCGI landscapes were beautiful. Some of the first age description was accurate. I wish we had gotten to see that show. Anyway, some of the character changes (Galadriel) were a bridge too far. Galadriel was a powerful witch, not a warrior. The troll scene was CRINGE. Don’t change beloved characters. Just invent new ones if you want a more modern take. Also, if you are going to spend almost a billion dollars, why not get a couple of big stars to do more of the heavy lifting? I wish they’d just been honest and hadn’t included any of Tolkien’s characters or places but had instead just called it a new world “inspired by Middle Earth”. If this was an original show my review might have been higher. Expand

WTF is going on here? I put 2 for amazing graphics, and one for interesting plot, but the atmosphere worth nothing. Seriously, black elves? What a shame!! Dwarf queen without a beard?! Sir John Tolkien would cry for such stupidity. If youWTF is going on here? I put 2 for amazing graphics, and one for interesting plot, but the atmosphere worth nothing. Seriously, black elves? What a shame!! Dwarf queen without a beard?! Sir John Tolkien would cry for such stupidity. If you want to add more black persons - just create your own Wakanda, which will be logical to have a black nation in the tropic climate, but don't destroy the atmosphere for **** tolerance. This is the shame!!!!!! Don't even know, would I like see the next episodes, or I'm enough with this circus... Expand
