This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I registered specifically to leave a review here. This is something disgusting, I have never experienced such bad emotions. Dialogues do not arouse interest, the characters are faded, boring. There is no contrast of emotions during viewing, this is what Tolkien is famous for. The plot is not worth remembering. It's terrible, I'm not going to look any further. Good luck, Amazon, ruined everything as usual. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show in general, no lore accounted for: The show does not look like a billion dollar show, the effects are at times good, at times 10-years-old-video game like, the acting is sub par with the exception of, of all characters, the ones that show all of 5 minutes, female frodo and female Sam(Nori and Poppy) all the rest of the cast feel forced and carton like, heck even Shannarah was better madel, the score is sub par as well, does not feel middle-earth-kind of epic

Now the worst part, regarding lore, but the page is not letting me write all that so I'll say only this, Harfoots being ancestors of Hobbits is like saying that Imladris is an older city than Rivendell, they are the same but in a different language, and they did not exist until 3rd age, as a branching from the race of men

Galadriel was the most powerful being in middle earth, one of the most powerful, wisest, kindest, fairest and loved being in the whole world, both ME and Valinor, almost as magically powerful as the Valar(gods) themselves, and WISE, not the assinine warmonger she is, she could raise mountains with a twist of her hand, so putting her in armor that she never wore, and wielding a sword, which she never touched, diminishes her, not empowers her

I would talk more about lore attrocities, as most of the show is an attrocitie itself, but meta wil stop me from doing so

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This sucks. Sorry for my English, but it boiled over. The question is that it is possible to create a new universe, any one, and introduce any modern agenda into it. But why try to do it with a classic, especially when it's contrary to lore. As a big fan of Tolkien, I can only say: Tolkien forgive us. Expand

My god it's boring. Dialogue is weak, characters are cliche, acting varies from okay to nonexistent.
only thing that is good is visuals, but honestly good visuals are everywhere these days.
oh, and of course there's a clear popular political message which wasn't great to watch.

An arrogant main character and an absolutely repulsive actress who plays her. Poorly written character Halbrand, you don't want to empathize with him. Some incomprehensible villagers and a dubious elf, they are not at all interesting to watch. The hobbits were also poorly disclosed, but the creators fulfilled their main task - they showed "diversity". In 2022, shooting such battle scenes is just a mockery, and given the budget of the series, it’s generally ridiculous. 20 horsemen for 30 orcs And it's served as WOOOW EPIC..
In general, there are already 6 hours of screen time, but the creators failed to interest me as a viewer, I will not watch the second season. One point for the gnome prince actor. The rest is miscast.
And I don't even want to compare this parody with the great films of Peter Jackson, simply because it's like comparing drawings from elementary school with paintings by great classical artists.
This show deserves 1/10

But they promised big budgets and claimed loveWhen they first announced this show I was puzzled because the Second Age is easily the least interesting period of Middle Earth's history. It is indeed the "middle child" of the Legendarium. But they promised big budgets and claimed love for the lore. All that was pretty much exposed over the past few months witch clip after clip revealing a glaring ignorance of the themes of the original, not to mention the basic lore. It became obvious that even the characters from Tolkien were going to be radically altered. It also became obvious that much of the "story" would follow original characters, which makes no sense given that there are ample characters in the stories themselves. So the fact that the show is this bad is not really suprising. Beyond the obvious rejection of the lore and messages of Tolkien himself, it's undermined by awful writing, bad acting, and a convoluted, non-sensical "plot." Hard to see how something this disjointed could attract even non-Tolkien fans. None of the characters are likeable. The action scenes are about as fake as can be. Many of them look like something from the Sci-Fi Channel. They even contradict themselves. At one point we're told that orcs are multiplying everywhere. Soon thereafter, "no one has seen an orc for decades." So which is it?

Then there are the blatant SJW messages inserted throughout it. Why? If that's the story you want to tell, make up your own. There's no need to desecrate the work of a better writer that you so clearly don't understand. One can only hope people will want to read the books (beyond LOTR & Hobbit) and discover the real wonder of Middle Earth rather than settling for this bloated trash that is essentially the "tale of idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

The audio design is absolutely abysmal. I know Hollywood is famous for its questionable decisions regarding audio design these days, but this is just rediculous . The difference between the action scenes and talking scenes is so extreme that even with me constantly adjusting the remote, I still couldn't really hear the talking scenes and the action scenes were blasting my ears to the point of pain. I ended up enabling subtitles just to try and get a comfortable viewing experience. Definitely the worst audio design I have seen in modern film. Some of the visuals are nice, but others seem out of play or sparse. I'm giving this 1 point above 0 for the visuals, but they are far from a saving grace. I don't know how much money was spent making this, but it was far too much. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is such a dissapointing two wasted hours of my life. A truly terrible adaptation from TOLR appendixes. Bad script, terrible acting, completely boring, story jumps from group to group in a completely disjointed manner. Obvious tolkenizaiton and gender, race, LGBTQ quota checkboxes that they ticked off which completely takes me out any kind of immersion into LOTR world. Elves has short hair, the males seem feminist, Galadriel is supposed to be some kind of war lord but seems more like a Karen. The Hobbits or whatever are mostly all little girls and what's the point of them in this age? This show is utter garbage and a billion dollar waste. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Episode 1 and 2 review. Long time fan here. I know my Tolkien. This is not Tolkien. The casting is terrible. The acting was poor, the costume were bad. Armor looked cheap and everyone is dressed in sacks. That's what it looks like. They destroyed the lore in the first 7 minutes of this dumpster fire. Feanor was not a hero. They made it look like the elves went to Middle earth because Morogoth destroyed the trees. This is not what happened. Ungoliant who they never mention destroyed the trees while Morgoth watched. He then went and killed Finwe and stole the silmarils. Feanor and his followers went and Killed their own kin the Teleri elves and stole the ships. All the elves that participated in this including those that never killed but followed Feanor were exiled and never allowed to return. This is includes Galadriel who is now Galadiel Warrior princess. That is just some of the canon crushing stuff. If they would take Tolkiens name off it. Didn't us any Tolkien names. Tweaked the story a bit you would probably have a watchable series but as it is trying to call this Tolkien is a bad idea. The Tolkien estate should be ashamed they ever let this happen. Expand

Many of the characters dont resemble the characters we know from the movies.

Black elves and dwarves? I mean come on. Does EVERYTHING have to be woke these days?? Whats wrong with elves and dwarves being all white like they're supposed to be? Elves are known to all be tall, white, long haired and beautiful while dwarves are known to be hairy, bearded, short and very stubborn but honest and loyal, but also all white.

Whats next?

Stick to the movies and books. Its also too boring somehow, not nearly enough epic battles and that gritty darkness and sense of dread and horror we are used to from the movies.
for example when the nazgul came for the first time, i was absolutely terrified.

dont ruin the show!

The dwarven rock crushing ritual of sigin-tarag, seriously? That kinda stuff might get a pass in Klingon fan fiction. And dwarves live 300+ years, so the whole where’ve-you-been-for-20-years Durin/Elrond spat disrespects canon. I liked Princess Disa, Durin’s wife. “He’s staying for dinner” is the best scene to date, but that kinda underlines my fundamental beef with this series: JRRT wrote almost nothing about female dwarves, so I’ll give the showrunners leeway, and they did a good job with it. But where Tolkien did write things, you have to stay true to his vision, or it’s not Middle-earth.

As a generic non-Tolkien fantasy, RoP might be passable - there’s surely worse fantasy out there - but then why pay million$ for the rights?

This is my review of The Rings of Power which I posted on Amazon that I'm sure will be deleted.

As a person who read all of Tolkien's books, who owns all of Peter Jackson's movies and watch them over and over, what have you done! All Amazon had to do is to stay true to Tolkien's characters and story and you would have had a winner! Why did you spend 1.5 billion on this disaster.

Now as it's easy to blame the fans for your failure, but the truth is your writers blew it and you have no one else to blame but yourselves. How hard is it to listen to fans because it is the fans who pay and support your products and your company.

After watching both episodes, I spent last night telling fellow Tolkien fans to watch both episodes to judge for themselves, so I'm not surprised that you've had 25 million viewers because people just love to see a disaster in progress. Once word of mouth spreads it's all over for your views.

As a Prime member for decades, I'm no troll or bot so if this review gets deleted, I will not be surprised after all I see you've disabled your rating system.

Maybe it's time for your writers to read some William Goldman writing books.

Or what about a journey w no supplies and no horses in dresses Elrond and groomer Kel take that looks like it will take weeks only for groomer Kel to turn back alone and in a dress dejected like a scorned lover. Or what about not caring about any of the characters because they skipped thousands of years and didn’t even show the big bad battle properly in the beginning? It’s so superficial it’s insulting. Instead we get great lines like, ‘you haven’t seen what I’ve seen’
The writing is atrocious.

They removed negative reviews from IMDB because Amazon owns it. Liars. They know their show is s***t.
About diversity. Is it is important that you risk ruining your half billion show?
You can literally make complete shows shows and movies about current times filled with all black cast. Yet they gotta in your face Tolkien's work.
It is pathetic. Truly pathetic.
Also about whamen good, men bad. It starts getting annoying. I remember I would read a 100 reviews on IMDB and I would not see a single comment about wokeness.
Now they are much more people who sya they cant stand it anymore. They do not wanna see movies wqhere men get diminished and portrayed stupid to elevate female characters.
It is not even fun, it is not smart, and it does not help you sell your media.
How stupid do you have to be to not understand this?
Or do they hope that if they do it continuously eventually people will buy into it?
But I already told you, normies start noticing this pattern. And it annoys them and me too.

It's obvious tokenism over Tolkienism, done in the pursuit of viewership, and has nothing to do with the LORE of The Rings. It is unbashedly dull and slow. Galadriel is both a Karen and a sulky Mary-Sue more concerned with her 'feelings' than how to be a beacon of hope to her people. There is little to like about this show so far, and that little is mostly contained within the landscape shots. Also there are some scenes of actual good acting in this show, but more on that later.
Now for the negatives:
1) The story is sometimes hard to follow due to some neglected plotpoints. Example: The elves consider returning to Valinor a great honor but it is never explained why they don't all go back at once (in the books its because they were banished but this goes unmentioned in the show).
2) The actors are really struggling with the script. A script which includes more pseudo-philosophical methaphors that don't work half the time instead of some genuine relatable dialog. I remember being captivated by the interactions of the Fellowship in the LOTR-movies but here its just boring and hollow...and the actors seem really uncomfortable saying those lines.
3) The character designs. Did you ever notice that in the PJ-movies each realm (Gondor, Rohan, Imladris, Lorien, Dwarfs, Haradrim, Easterlings) has a very distinct style of clothing and hair? Like the people of Rohan are tall with unkempt and brighter hair-colors and a brown-green color scheme and the gondorians are rather dark-haired with more silver-blue clothing. In this show all styles are mixed across elves and men and even withing those cultures which does not give a strong sense of identity to them.
4) Celebrimbor looks way older than Galadriel eventhough he is a lot younger. Weirdly enough some elves actually look rather old, despite the fact that they should possess some form of ageless beauty. The weird hairstyles do not help in that regard.
5) Just to emphasise this point again, the dialogue is just weird. Characters are saying lines instead of talking to each other. Also some appear to be braindead: e.g. Galadriel finds a clue to Sauron still being around and EVERYONE dismisses it. Even Gil-Galad who sanctioned her very mission to look for said clue just brushes it aside. People are complaining that Galadriel is unlikeable in this series, but I kinda can relate because every character she interacts with is just a douche for the sake of it.

Personally, I'm in awe of Tolkien's life's work, loved the movie experience of the original Lord of the Rings, I had mixed feelings about the Hobbit and felt disheartened about this current project after the first episode. The added value seems to come in crisp shots of this beautiful world. But immersion was frequently broken by awkward dialogue and forced plot points. The team developing the story seemed to have a story in mind that they would like to tell and try to mix it with an existing great story in order to market their better. It feels like an unfortunate attempt of a cash grab, by piggy banking on the success of earlier great work (eg Tolkien, Peter Jackson). The focus seems to be on marketing and appealing to current cultural/political ideas instead of storytelling. In conclusion, if you like Tolkien's world, and would like to more content telling or expanding on his work, there is much better fan fiction on YouTube. Expand

Tried to watch 7th episode but I couldn't fathom to watch it beyond opening scenes. The writers absolutely ignore law of physics e.g. surely it wouldn't be wise to lift a burning wooden beam with bare hands but our "heroes" are able to with ease. Volcanic ashes should be scorching hot, not this **** we see in the show. Galadriel trying to act caring doesn't do it for me, she sucks. And harfoots, I can't stand them. Where to start with this abomination? The worst writing I have ever encountered this side of the WB. "A stone sees only downward." Ya, that is why stones sink. How deep and profound. It is filled with junior high level, YA writing. They try so hard to be deep, but have no understanding of philosophy or metaphor. Again, junior high writing.

How about that troll fight? Wow. Apparently the show runners are big fans of anime or video games. She mashed x at exactly the right time in that fight for the dodge and finishing move. No sweat, just wanted to sit there for a little while watching her troops get chucked around to humble them a little, I suppose. She certainly is one tough bird. I mean, hell, she basically swam the equivalent of the Atlantic Ocean. What is a troll compared to that? And her motivation for the centuries of suffering, looking for the hidden enemy? She's upset. She wants revenge. Such a one note character.

How about the visit to the dwarves? Just a few minutes walk away, no need for gear or a wardrobe change. Challenging someone to the sacred right of rock smashing will always get you in the door. How idiotic. This show is a death by a thousand cuts. Hair styles, wardrobe, acting, directing. Everywhere it sucks, but the writing is the biggest downfall. 2 hours in and I care not one bit about any of the characters. I'm starting to root for Sauron. Hopefully he can kill all the characters and put this show out of it's misery.

You know that Amazon knows it sucks when they have to take away the ability to rate the show, and has their company, IMDB, not allow reviews under 6 stars. Sycophantic "professional" reviewers trying to kiss Amazon ass and saying all the legitimate criticism are just a bunch of racist trolls will only deflect attention from this actual failure for so long. Your empire is crumbling, Bezos. Pull the plug on this mess while you still can. Admit it was a mistake, you will be more respected for it.

If this is your first foray into Middle Earth I cannot stress enough, start with the books (or audiobooks) and then the films, and skip this. This is just bad television. The show moves as slow as molasses, the script is incoherent and the characters of all poor reflections of themselves from Tolkien’s original works. I really wanted to like this show. As someone who has studied and written about the interplay between different mediums, and as a lifelong Tolkien fan, I was excited to see what Amazon Studios would offer.

That said, I am extremely disappointed. One would not think this is the ‘most expensive TV series of all time’. Where did all the money go? It doesn’t take half a billion dollars to pump out some impressive CGI. For writing, wardrobe and props, story development, and casting, it looks like they spent the bare minimum.

At first viewing, the impressive visuals serve to obscure the bad writing, but after you’ve had time to let it sink in, you realize how poor it is. You have little parables, like the already infamous ‘floating boat’ scene, that are stretching for profound meaning but fall far short and end up confusing. It’s the equivalent of a poorly written comic book or school play. Then there is writing that is lazy or out of place in an ancient/mythic setting. Think use of the word, ‘ok’, or Elrond’s cutesy, “why didn’t you say so.” Or, “you smell like an orc” (do ethereal being like elves stink?). I thought some of the best writing came in the Harfoot scenes (‘The Sky is Strange!’), but they are all speaking those lines with an odd southern Irish accent.

The wardrobe, sets, and props are of inconsistent quality, at best. Some costumes are passable, some look like they were 3D printed and made out of plastic or cheap metal. Again, at first viewing some of the sets look fantastic, but later you realize they felt sort of empty and lifeless, like you could tell they were shot in a warehouse studio. The hair choices for the elves is baffling. Why anyone thought it was appropriate to feature barbershop fades, buzz cuts, and pompadours with copious hair product is beyond me. Bear McCreary’s score is passable but does not thus far have the range and grandeur of Howard Shore’s LOTR. The acting is also a confusing mixed-bag. Once again, at first viewing it seems passable, but something still feels off. Only upon second viewing or later reflection do you realize that the elves (especially Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel) are wooden and expressionless. If you compare with the acting in Jackson’s LOTR, it is crystal clear that the acting quality is simply not there in Rings of Power. One might be tempted to think that elves are supposed to be stoic and expressionless, but this could not be further from the truth! The truth is elves are supposed to more human than humans, almost, express more, emote more, simply be more bright and divine than humans ever could be. Peterson’s original trilogy did a fantastic job at capturing this, while Amazon studios failed miserably.

The casting follows the general theme of: wtf were they thinking? The supreme controversy, both contrived and genuine, about diverse casting is the least of the show’s problems. Though there have been perfectly valid arguments that inclusivity could have been artfully done through Rhun (analogous to Asia in Tolkien’s universe) and Harad (analogous to North Africa) storylines that intersected with those in Middle Earth and Numenor. As it stands, it is awkward and cheap tokenism, which used to be considered offensive to people of color.

Again, elves are supposed to have a timeless quality about them. In this show, Galadriel and Elrond look about forty human years younger than Celebrimbor, while all three are thousands of years old at this point in the story. Elves are supposed to be the fairest and most beautiful beings, some of whom seem to almost emit a holy light. The Rings of Power producers failed miserably at capturing this quality. Furthermore, where are the top class actors? Half a billion dollars couldn’t manage to bring in any recognizable actors?

The plot is jarring at times because there are simply too many events that flatly defy logic. In the first two episodes, a character jumps off a ship in the middle of a huge ocean with the prospect of swimming at least a thousand miles to land with no plan or guidance. Characters are shown arriving at a destination hundreds of miles away without equipment, guides, or horses, as if they got there while taking a leisurely morning stroll. Supposed elite elven warriors are made into hapless bowling pins for an ice troll. These add up and really hinder the ability to suspend disbelief. All this ultimately amounts to a humongously baffling missed opportunity. Seriously, it makes almost no sense! It seems like this show was rushed to the cutting room floor without any edits, reshoots, or recastings. One can only surmise that the producers thought they could ride the wave of goodwill that the Lord of the Rings name carries without putting the care, time, and hard work necessary to create a good final product.

That said, this show is insanely boring, and that’s coming from someone who loves the Fellowship of the Ring, arguably the slowest of the trilogy. The action just doesn't feel grounded in reality and we’re not led to believe the protagonist is ever in any sort of real danger. Yes, I’m aware this is a fantasy show, but good fantasy and Sci-Fi should be grounded in reality to some degree (the way the original movies were). The dialogue is tedious and pseudo-philosophical. It often just sounds pretentious. My wife fell asleep half way through the first episode. Do yourself a favor and just rewatch the movies. Expand

Absolute worst show I've ever seen in my life. The story and dialogue is horrific and feels like a crappy fan-fiction.

Why can be a some hobbits with down syndrome maybe ? Just think about how you make movies. Expand

(direct lore violation), the fact it uses more made up characters than real Tolkien characters? (indirect lore violation), that it is clearly politically motivated? (“It felt only natural to us that an adaptation of Tolkien’s work would reflect what the world actually looks like,” which is inserting modern elements from the real world and thus a direct lore violation), or perhaps how Tar-Míriel is alive before the forging of the rings and actually interacts with Galadriel in Númenor? (direct lore violation multiple times over) or maybe because Isildur is alive before the forging of the rings? (direct lore violation) and what of Celebrimbor looking like an old man? (indirect lore violation) or how Galadriel's character being described as being full of "piss and vinegar" but is also totally different from the books and a Mary Sue and thus perfect at everything? (direct lore violation) or how Galadriel is seemingly being both unmarried and unaware of the fact Finrod was reincarnated long ago? (direct lore violations) and why are two Durins alive at once? (direct lore violation) with there being Númenórean war cavalry? (direct lore violation) Is that enough or do you want more? Ok how about Harfoots existing in the second age and elf-identifying as such? (indirect lore violation) or how the Númenórean army will have a 50/50 gender split (direct lore violation) with Tar-Míriel as a ruling queen? (direct lore violation) Lets also consider the driving question behind the production, he [McKay] adds, was this: “Can we come up with the novel Tolkien never wrote and do it as the mega-event series that could only happen now?” - thus it is not an adaptation of Tolkien's work anyway with there being at least one non-Tolkienian elf-human romance (indirect lore violation) to boot. Is that enough or is this somehow racist too? What a train wreck. Only people who have no idea about the lore will love this and dislike this review haha. Expand

As a lifelong Tolkien fan and proud gatekeeper of Tolkien's legacy, I had high hopes when this was first announced however the slow drip drip drip of bad trailers and teasers followed by Stephen Colbert hosting a Comic-Con panel of the showrunners told something was rotten in Denmark and indeed something WAS. At Comic-Con the Con was on as the show runners, the executive producer, and virtually all of the cast indicated that this was off track. Virtually nobody involved with this production is even familiar with Tolkien. This show is a flop on every level imaginable where the hell did 68 million go each episode? Certainly not to the character development, script writing, costumes, sets, armor, heraldry or iconography. But the biggest problem with all of this is the compression of 4,000 years the second age down to a couple hundred years at most? The tone of this is not Tolkienian, the story writing and script writing is not Tolkienian, the dialogue is not Tolkienian. This is a disgrace to the legacy of the professor and to all his fandom. So so sad. I left this review after watching the first three episodes. I couldn't get through neither episode 2 nor episode 3 in one shot. They were both so spectacularly bad that I could only take them in small chunks so I wouldn't blow chunks. Literally blow chunks. Expand

It's just so stupid.

I could pick 100 moments but to be spoiler free lets take Galadriel climbing and ice wall in the trailer. She uses a dagger to hang on not an ice axe as if a dagger would work well. She is in full armour which is very heavy and restricts movement, no one could free climb in that. She's still wearing gauntlets for an activity that involves getting your fingers into crevices. It's clearly freezing cold but she's wearing metal armour (a great conductor of heat) so she would just freeze to death.

Whoever wrote this couldn't be bothered to think, I don't understand how you can get paid so much and have so little clue? As I watch I am continously looking at it and thinking "that doesn't make sense" or "that doesn't work" or just "but why"?
