Viewing it as a generic fantasy, things do not improve: the script is banal and has unbridgeable holes that will never be explained. Many things happen just to get the plot from point A to point B, but without any motivated reasons behind them to make these passages believable. Galadriel have chosen to make her selfish, quite stupid (she always gets her attitude wrong making everyone dislike her) unbearably arrogant and with the wisdom of a teenager despite the fact that when you start the series she is already more than 4,000 years old. The pseudo-philosophical dialogues made me laughing sometimes. The dialogues are mostly flat, never moved me and sometimes made me cringe at their banality. If at first I tried to turn a blind eye, as the series goes on I found increasingly awkward dialogues and ridiculous narrative choices. The entire plot seems to be written following the "perfect screenwriter's manual" in order to create as much drama (often exaggerated and poorly justified), romance and "guess who" situations as possible: it seems to be written by an AI. Only a few minutes were devoted to the creation of the rings then, and everything was resolved in no time at all, with a cringe-worthy sufficiency. Celebrimbor looks like a senior accountant, Elrond (who is one of the best characters in the series) looks like a young career insurance man. The authors took a story that is indisputably one of the greatest works of all time and trying to adapt it to modern times. You can't do that. If you need a setting that fits your series, please come up with your own ideas. In summary, the problem is not so much that the authors have strayed from Tolkien's writings in adapting the story for film, which is inevitable when transporting a literary work to film, but that the spirit of the original work has been slaughtered: this stuff is not Tolkien, but not even close. I see from reading the reviews that there are also those who have enjoyed this series, and let me be clear that I have nothing against them: in the same way, I who like to drink wine but also am not a true connoisseur, sometimes happen to drink a poor or mediocre wine without even realizing it: simply at that moment I feel like drinking a wine and whatever they serve me served in a nice goblet I will happily quaff it. This fantasy is like a mediocre wine that could (perhaps) be appreciated if it were not presented as a top-of-the-line wine. I've had a lot of good parties with €1.75 wine. But if you serve me a wine by presenting it as a top-of-the-line wine (an Amarone della Valpolicella or an Marqués de Murrieta for example), and when I taste it I understand that it is a €1.75 supermarket wine, I spit that wine out. Hence the zero given to my review.… Expand

The entire series is an insult to Tolkien's beloved world. It's not only bad lore-wise, even if you view it as a standalone series (which it isn't, unfortunately) it fails to be an entertaining piece of media. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. IF the goal of this show was for me to support the forces of evil then they have completed their goal. Galadriel is not suppose to be a soldier I believe, she is also a pyschopath who wants to commit genocide. It's even more horrible when you see the past peformances done by those who play her character and its done really well its not a problem with actresses this universe has shown that. Another problem with the show why is there a bloody wizard coming from the sky? They come from the boats. Why is their a Balrog in moria? they don't dig deep enough until the third age with Durin's bane. Why do the elves have short hair it just makes zero sense I guess they spent their whole budget on the Visuals which a great and couldn't afford to buy some wigs or maybe there's some shortage?? Why are the numernorians whinny and not 8ft peak of humanity? How come when they go on the expedition to middle earth they have three boats and somehow come out with 500 horses its really not that hard to copy and past those three boats and make it into 50. Browyn or however you say her name should be dead the plot armor is ridiculous and it makes no sense how she is the leader after being berated at the beginning of the season suddenly everyone looks to her for guidance? For a show with a rumored budget of $58m per episode they really must of spent $55m on visuals. The real problem is we are going to have to deal with atleast another season of this crap as they are already filming season 2. These showrunners should be fired and they should bring in peter jackson or someone who atleast has some respect for Tolkien I am not asking for word to word the Lord of the rings movies proved that you can stray from the literature but it shouldn't just albeit changing history because oooh Balrogs are cool watch season 2 and Hobbits are popular so lets put them in and don't forget about Wizards.

No one would care if the show didn't have the Harfoots they are all horrible pieces of crap who leave their own kin behind while a lot of them are all walking around contributing nothing. IT feels so forced to have them in because they where in the movies.

This show also has no sense of just how large the world is for the trip with Halbrand going back to the Elf capital would of taken like 3 months to do on horseback Tolkien always made very sure to mention the scale of the world and just how long it takes so 6 days to get back from the Southlands or now mordor with that sexy transition is ridiculous.

Dwarven women should have full beards If you don't like it thats just the way it is.

I get that they don't have the rights to the similarion but its not an excuse to make such a lackluster disaster if they wanted to disrespect Tolkien they didn't have to make a tv show could of just pissed on his grave. There's very few ups but I rated it 0 because it's just disrespectful to Tolkien the only reason Amazon got the rights was to put The Lord of the Rings in the title of their Generic fantasy show because they know the name has weight.… Expand

Not ready to agree. This beautiful picture means only one thing. Artists and other professionals, graphics and other things that were bought for a billion, were in the clutches of insane propagandists of the current agenda, ignoring either Tolkien's legacy or viewers and fans. It is the murder of the story that carries the whole of the fantasy genre on it's shoulders. Really, making it this bad must have taken some special effort. Hats of to you, JD Payne and PAtrickMckkay.

This show has nothing to appeal to any true Tolkien fan. Any so-called "fan" of Tolkien who likes this show is either:
A. Lying B. Have never actually read the source material

Reasons why no actual Tolkien fan would like the show:
1. Tolkien hated allegory in all its forms. This is well documented and practically verbatim in Tolkien's own words. Meaning if you respect the author and enjoyed his works then it would be upsetting to see someone using the author's own work to do nothing but crowbar allegory into practically every scene of the show. 2. They take the names of well-known characters and then create a completely new character that shares none of the original beloved character's traits. This is not showing respect this is disrespect not only to the author but to the fans due to the way they responded when this was pointed out.

3. Do not use established known important milestones. Listen you are talking about a subject that people study with a passion some people know the history of Middle Earth better than real Earth history. Most people who are real fans know at least a rough outline of the history and even may have a favorite moment or hero. This show completely ignores the established history and milestones. This again shows disrespect for the author and his work. Then it turns into disrespect of fans who point it out.

4. Poor grammar and horrible monologs. Professor Tolkien was a professor of English and Litierute. If the writers were his students he would fail them for the amateurish writing of the show. Nothing flows no stirring speeches. Instead, you get dumb things like "give me the meat! and give it to me raw!" lol come one, and this gem "a boat sails because it looks up and rock sinks because it looks down". Yes, those are actual quotes from this atrocity.

If you stripped out the association with the beloved Tolkien and his works this show would be trashed universally since there would not any pretend "fans". Please someone at Amazon fire everyone who had anything to do with writing or running this show! You spent 1 billion and you got worse than nothing for all that money and energy.… Expand

Decisions made by main characters don't make sense, their personalities are uninteresting, and developments in story lines are either nonsensical, physically impossible or asinine (i.e. an Elven master smithe never heard of creating an alloy, and when coaxed to be gentler with the blending of metals, in the end he just tosses in a turd of mithril?). Even extras look and act like mobs of amateurs. We so wanted to love this show, I even purchased a 75 inch TV to watch it. If there was a negative score, I would give it.… Expand

Another point is the dumbing down of EVERYONE so that Galadriel can get her girl boss moments in, one example being the Numenorians, (supposed to be the strongest and best soldiers of man in all of Middle Earth) they barely even knew how to fight, until Galadriel shows up and teaches them how to do so, or the fact that the entire show is literally based on a happenstance that Sauron and Galadriel are in the same area of the ocean that she jumps into. So, Halbrand was secretly following the Elven ship (without them noticing???), then he just blew up his own ship and rafted over to her real quick when he thought the moment was right? If you can't see how awful this writing is, then I am truly sorry for you. Even the best storyline (the dwarves, which wasn't even that great to begin with, especially the Balrog scene) is undermined by the fact that the Queen of the dwarves believes that YOU are a "racist" if you didn't love every aspect of this show, it makes it hard to even care about the dwarven storyline after reading those articles, so thanks for that, Deesa :D Anyways, this show is garbage even if you don't care about the lore in Tolkien's books, it is a PRIME example on what you should not do when you are writing, and it is SO sad that instead of being something competent and watchable, it is a laughing-fest of some of the worst writing that I have ever seen.… Expand

A very expensive attempt to brainwash people subverting a legendary story written by one of the worlds best story tellers. It is crystal clear the writers and show runners are completely out of their depth. Very sad state of affairs. I would love to be a fly on the wall of the finance department when the results come back about viewer drop count after the first 30 mins. The writing is awful, the acting is terrible. Nothing makes sense in regards to the actual lore. Instead it is filled to the brim with identity politics and woke nonsense.

I suppose if you did not read the source material, did not see peter jacksons loving tribute trilogy, and do not mind bad acting, bad writing , poor pacing, this is an ok series.

Galadriel is an unlikeable Mary Sue with an ego rivaling Vladimir Putin. She's untouchable and perfect in every way, a group of elves struggle with a troll? No problem! Here come Galadriel! Wanna jump off a ship in the middle of nowhere and survive? Crazy idea right!? Not for Galadriel, who not only survives, she runs in a mysterious man who obvious isn't Sauron. Want some terrible fight choreography? All of the fight scenes, there was even a training scene where she states the obvious... "Stab, twist, gut." I mean she did forget slash... but how can you blame her? She's Galadriel, the golden child of the elves. Let's talk Hobbits, just kidding there is nothing to tell besides they find some wizard dude who is totally not Gandalf. Which is weird because he doesn't show up til the 3rd age. Then lets talk about Dwarves, being the best trash inside a junkyard isn't much praise but we get golden lines like - "give me the meat and give it me raw." I thought I was watching the wrong rings of power and started to wonder where is Brooklyn Chase fit in this scene? There is no sense of scale or time in this show. The armor all looks cheap and poorly designed. Not to mention one of the most legendry smiths in all of Middle Earth, doesn't understand metal alloy. They gave a terrible origin story to mithril that it somehow is going to save the tree, so the elves can live and all they gotta do is wear those rings of power...

They disrespected Tolkien's work and disrespected us as an audience.… Expand

This is the WORST show on TV right now not even taking into the account the obscene budget. The dialogue is non-sensical and showcases how little the marketers *COUGH*, I mean "writers", are in tune with basic human conversation as they spend their time surrounded by fart sniffing intellectuals, celebrities, and greed. Even in a fantasy setting, the lines are so horrendously out of place, juvenile, and contrived. There are a handful of, not just 1 or 2, "wait what? How is that even possible?" moments in every single episode. Also, this version of Galadriel has to be the most insufferable, 1 dimensional, entitled, outright nasty, and painfully corny character to have been created for TV since the beginning of the streaming era. Almost nothing she says or does is remotely believable, not bathed in a petulant tone of outright meanness or superiority, or not meant to demean, properly educate, or "one up" whoever she's interacting with. It's a rusty, vanity soaked dagger in the back of Tolkien. A shameless pandering to normies that lap up their nutritionless store brand kibble media fed to them on a daily basis. A self congratulatory fornication of egos, agendas, and $. Not to be harsh... oh hell why not, but the same people loving on this show and claiming the hate is rooted in character flaws of the reviewers are likely the same people that thought Jurrasic World Dominion was wonderful. Like that unfortunate cash grab, Rings of Power insidiously rides in on the back of cherished nostalgia and intrigue all the while abusing and mutating that which carries it into a poorly conceived, barely recognizable amalgam of unprovoked errors. The real hate, the real disrespect, lies in the hearts and minds of the hack creators and the monied interests behind them who play on society's joys, divisions, and previous works of art to make a quick buck.

Massive lord of the rings fan here, so sad to be majorly disappointed by this show. Every character that is cannon has been bastardized by amazon, and every new character is a characature. Then you have galadriel my favourite character from the lore/books, now my least favourite character from the show. So annoying, horrible and angry towards her friends / soldiers 'one track minded', everything galadriel isn't. Then we come to the action scenes, a troll attacks the entire group one shotting multiple men on the way over, then galadriel has a 1v1 'dance sequence' spinning her sword about in front of a green screen until the troll dies instantly to just her attacking. Some of the worst combat choreography i've ever seen. The only positive is the visuals/sets and I feel sorry for the talented few who were in charge of these decisions while amongst the children writing the scripts. Feels like a fan fiction that has had 1b$ thrown at it.… Expand

Lord breaking. Insult to Tolkiens work. Decided the “perverse” characters like Tolkien said he hated. He had many more quotes that align with things in the show that he hated. Don’t try to make Tolkiens work without his ideals.
