I don't get the trolling of this show since it's enjoyable to watch. Even if you don't like it the production is beautiful. It is leaving me guessing as to what's going to happen next. Troolers, Get a Life.

What happened to them all in the third age for the LoTR and Hobbit movies? Black actors could have portrayed all the the harfoots, who Tolkien specified had ‘browner skin’ and could have played ALL of the ‘Southlanders’ as Tolkien had already stated dark skinned men lived further south. But no, we had to be subjected to completely illogical scenarios. Apart from the green screen cgi, this is a joke. The dialogue is poor. No one with an IQ over 90 would give this 10/10. I only gave it a shot after visiting my parents and they wanted to watch it with me. After watching it I realized there were a few things that didn’t make sense, but ultimately it was pretty decent. It’s not boring like some say, the story is there, and I’m genuinely excited to see where it goes from here. That being said, with the amount of money Amazon reportedly spent making this, I’m sure there are many aspects they could of improved on. I do feel the spirit of Tolkien’s works in it to a moderate degree. Expand

I will elaborate further on my thoughts in this review after the season finale, but I am tenatively giving it a 7/10.

So far it has surprised me how interestingly they've covered parts of the Second Age so far, I am particularly excited by who I assume is going to be a Blue Wizard as they are characters I have been longing to see depicted on the big screen. I find it really exciting to see stories written for characters who were otherwise very empty in Tolkien's writing, among them being Galadriel.

The negative is that the Galadriel/Numenor point of view so far has been less interesting, I find myself just wanting to see more of the Hobbits or Dwarves. Some thing are pretty cliche, the ending of Episode 7 was pretty corny for example.

Whether I drop the rating or not will really depend on the identity of The Stranger. If it is Gandalf as many suspect, it will drop incredibly as that topples the current balance of creating something new and retaining what Tolkien established.

Expand

Looks and sounds great, but I've no idea where the story is going. Really hurts the story to make Sauron the main villain at the start since we already know they won't defeat him here.

Don't listen to racist bigots trying to defend it, but also avoid hating it just because it has a bunch of "woke inclusions" before forming your own opinion. This show has some redeeming qualities, the visuals are stunning with lots of throw backs to the movie trilogy (in both, the good sense and bad) and despite most dialogs being cringy and lousy with an overuse of cliche and plain tropes, the actors in general are quite talented and the sound/music quality is pretty decent... almost as if it were trying to compensate the lacks of other departments. I wouldn't recommend it to a fan of Tolken books though.

Most positive reviews come from bigots (aka Karens) who haven't read a single Tolken book and cannot distinguish between Gandalf and Dumbledore and only are trying to boost the user score out of ideological bias rather than an honest review or as a demonstration of how much they liked it, let alone critics with an amazon paycheck. Kinda hilarious how all positive reviews have the same amount of likes and negative ones of dislikes.

But clearly the main reason for that is because the show runner are fully realized that their one and only strongest point of this whole presentation, is the world that Tolkien has carefully crafted back in the days. What they've forgot, is that Tolkien builds all the character in his story with the same amount of attention that the world would've gotten. So when your source material is solely a footnotes of the world once has been completed, this shows falls exactly the same scenario as The Hobbits Trilogy did, by making the characters in that story as stereotypical as possible.

Lastly, the visual effects is not even that impressive honestly. I would love if with all that budgets they are pouring, we could get a cinematic experiences of the camera zooming in and out, tracking and overlapping throughout this expensive looking background. The same way Blade Runner 2049 does. But surely, hiring an established cinematographer is not in their capacity. So, the end result of that near 1 billions of a budgets just became nothing more than just an expensive looking backgrounds.

Halfway through season 1, I think we have a fair picture of this show.
The Good
-CGI and practical effects are mostly good.
-The portrayal of the dwarves is mostly good.
The Bad
-The pseudo-Tolkien dialogue comes off as amateurish and breaks immersion. -The portrayal of Galadriel as a rude, impulsive super-soldier is annoying.
-The elves do not look or act like the elves in the books, which makes it feel like generic fantasy. -The hobbits are insufferable. -The plot moves at a snail's pace.
-There are obvious plot holes and inexplicable decisions.
The fact that I'm still watching means the show has some appeal, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I hope (but do not expect) that they will learn from the season 1 feedback and course-correct in coming seasons.

At that time Tolkien was not so well known outside the Anglo-Saxon culture. It was an unforgettable experience, a real journey into another universe. He was one of the authors who pushed me to become a writer. However, I am not a Tolkien fan, much less a "purist". I understand that a movie or a television series has different needs than a book.

My opinion on the first episodes of the new series "The Rings of Power", however, is negative. This is a fantasy series like many others, done quite well, without honors or glory, however. A pleasant but unpretentious Sword & Sorcery. But it has nothing to do with Tolkien, although it is set in the world he created. Perhaps the only Tolkenian "touch" are the Harfoots, who — I must say — have been represented quite well. Elves are basically Humans with pointy ears. All their power, their magic, their connection with the land, remains in the background, that is, it is only a faint echo of what Tolkien had written.

But the worst part is that today all movies are becoming a bad copy of the worst Marvel movies, namely the latest. The scene of Galadriel jumping into the sea and thinking of swimming halfway across the ocean to return to Middle-earth is simply ridiculous. Clearly it was done because the writers did not find an alternative ploy for her "rebellion". Tolkien might have waited months to come up with an idea, but he wouldn't write a line until he found a likely one. Similarly, the descent of the meteorite is a bit too reminiscent of Superman and the various DC television series.

Then there is a "delicate" question that must be addressed sooner or later. American culture is a culture still steeped in racism and homophobia, fear of the different and discrimination. We have also seen this recently with the sentence on abortion. Thus, to compensate and because of a certain sense of guilt, the world of American cinema and television is trying to put in every film and television series a cast that should represent an example of respect for "diversity" as it is conceived in the modern American culture, especially in relation to people of color and LGBTQ+.

This is a "modern" problem, linked only to the last centuries of our history. This approach, however, although noble in principle, cannot and must not distort the meaning of every plot and story that is imagined, but must be applied where possible. I am not talking about the fact that there is a black elf, because in the end, although it is not consistent with Tolkien's view of the Elves which, I remember, has its roots more in Finnish than Celtic mythology, it is not such a serious problem.

The problem is more noticeable when dealing with the true Tolkenian diversity, too advanced to be acceptable to American culture, made above all of image and substance, that is the female Dwarves. Beyond the ten-year diatribe as to whether female Dwarves have beards or not, for Tolkien they resemble males in every way. They should therefore have the same nose, the same faces, the same build. But this would be difficult to accept for the average American, imbued with the principle that women must necessarily be "beautiful" and moreover according to the Western culture's standards. So the females of the Dwarves are short, a little round, but then they stop there, they don't go further. The females of Dwarves are basically beautiful.

Therefore, when they have to face a real diversity, one not linked to modern social conflicts, alien to the way of thinking of 20th century society, they can't do it, showing that all the rules imposed by American cinema on diversity are simple hypocrisy, all image and no substance. On the other hand, even in the LGBTQ+ sphere, the British in television series are far ahead of the Americans. Just think of Torchwood. Even in the field of diversity, Americans will always and in any case remain "puritans".

The acting is subpar. The story is piecemeal. It's like watching trailer after trailer after trailer strung together into an episode.

The visual effects are set pieces which stick out like sore thumbs, not vehicles of immersion, and it feels like their is little cohesive bond visually from one scene to the next.

The dialog treats the audience like idiots and is the antithesis of "show not say." Repeated attempts are made to offer sage wisdom and deep insight, but it's like Alexa is translating poetry from Mandarin into Russian and then finally into English - if there was any point to the rambling it was lost long before it left the actors' mouths. It's what happens when an upstart writer thinks they can mimic the literary legend which was J. R. R. Tolkien by being flowery. My biggest issue with Tolkien was how wordy he could get, but he understood the meaning, intention, and proper implication of every word he included. I'm still not sure what her brother was carrying on about the sailboat.

I am not a Tolkien "fanboy" but as a writer I deeply value and respect his work. It's clear the Rings of Power didn't understand what they were working with nor care to give any deference to a man who defined the modern fantasy genre. They believe they can do better and at every opportunity departed not just from source material, but from the key elements of Tolkien's inspiration and worldview.

While some may garner enjoyment from the series, and I won't fault them for that, I do dare them to dig deeper into how the series treats the audience, its characters, and what messages are being hamfisted into Middle Earth.

Cast a sleep spell on me…

Nine minutes of weak character building and exposition. That’s how they decided to kick this off.

And it’s nine minutes focused on Galadriel, a dower and uncharismatic warrior totally unlike how she is portrayed in other stories. Heck, even her fellow elves can’t stand her, whether as a child or an adult. Then the first instance of action occurs and Galadriel takes out the threat single-handedly, bringing up the question of why even drag the others with her, presumably for centuries of fruitless labor.

The acting is decent all around, but nothing special. Not a single actor or role stands out as special or particularly memorable. It’s like a jumble of background characters, with Galadriel being propped up despite the mediocre performance and character. As for the story, it’s a hodgepodge of shifting perspectives that bounces all over the place at a breakneck pace. Likely an attempt to spice up an otherwise boring narrative.

Sets and props are colorful and thematic, but things are a bit off. Like how the elves and harfoots are basically humans with cosplay ears and the armor Galadriel and her company wear when given honors is spraypainted cardboard. If you look too closely, it all comes off like cheap props more at home in a theater play than a series with a half billion dollar budget.

That’s the real mystery of this series… where did all the money go???

So this kiddy friendly blood free pc watered down show for all ...isn't really the books or the films. So I don't really understand why it exists. Lore matters but not to me. I care about quality writing and story and a feel for adventure but sadly that is lacking along with weak performances. Also the casting is... well not great and the cgi is like a video game. Overall it's fine but not what we expected or wanted or needed. This is another missed opportunity and the sheer cost alone makes the entire endeavour kind of disgusting. Also...fudge Amazon and tax dodging Jeff bezos lol Expand

This one represents resentment and entitlement; while the other personified sympathy, conservation and the type of perspective that only a loving demi-god (animist, perhaps) might have. The amazon show is SPIRITUALLY BANKRUPT, and so was the Wheel of Time series they made because materialism is akin to nihilism; and the production staff are lost in the throes of self-interest. They're wading through the mire of modern industry, using software tools as their crutch: not one of them capable of creating art. Expand

First off, the anti-woke 0 & 1 star comments are off their rocker and are a distraction to the real criticisms of the show. The pushback against these reviews is valid.

Now on to the review... It's boring.

The visuals and music are epic, especially for a TV show, but what is on screen doesn't match except at the most shallow level. The show does a bad job of setting up an overall context for what happens. There is little to drive the story forward except a general, "Yeah some people think something bad will happen sometime in the future". That's made even worse because most of the people in the show don't share, or act like they share, that view, and make a good case why they shouldn't.

The show would have been better off if it had started by showing the growing threat, and given a reason why the main characters should know about it. That would have given a sense of urgency that was lacking in many scenes.

Another thing the show should have done was to show more of the conflict that shaped the main characters. Many are deeply driven to act the way the do, but the audience has been given little reason to feel what those characters feel. Even when a reason is given for one character, it is undercut by the fact that reason happened so long ago. The result of all this is that the actions of the main characters feel like character flaws instead of a heroic drive.

it does not seem very well thought out. Even the protagonist seems a bit childish, for a being that's been around for millennia.
Better stick to the books, I'm afraid. Great visuals, though!

Let alone anyone from the Federated States of Micronesia or even Muslim Elfs, is it that difficult to put a Hijab on an elf? Like seriously, Wtf! If Tolkien’s related stories, if you want to call them that, cannot embrace anti-white multiculturalism like all other Hollywood producers(Top Gun the exception) then it should be cancelled!! Why give these white nerds any entertainment at all? Also, I am seriously disappointed in the lack of teenage LGBTQ+ representation, does Tolkien have us believe that in middle earth there is no isoflavones or soy products available for gender affirmation. Obviously these producers did not follow the proper required Checklist before getting their project greenlighted. I did not see any persons of color as female lesbians recast as characters once played by crusty old while men – disappointed!!! So please redo with Gandalf recast with POC LGBTQ+ representation and all will be forgiven. Morons! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was looking forward to this show because I love Tolkien and so I was curious to see how a massive budget would work on his Second Age.
As such I was very forgiving and kept watching even when the quality just wasn't there. The series' narrative is broken into 4 stories; - The High Elves worried their world is fading and resolving to 'fix' it by creating an object of some kind to store and retain their power, which means they interact with Dwarves - a brave young girl who is part of a group of proto Hobbits interacting with a mysterious, bearded, magical stranger. - A soldier elf helping a group of people led by a single woman and her son, - A warrior Galadriel hunting Sauron and convincing the queen of Numenor to invade Middle Earth while getting to know a mysterious, charming (but sinister) stranger

Each of these stories unfurls slowly, ponderously and at times annoyingly. The entire narrative could have been covered in a third of the time and by far the most interesting is the stuff that sticks to Tolkien (note: for the most part the series butchers Tolkien). The quality of the writing is surprisingly bad, which makes few of the characters stand out and many of them seem completely uninteresting or cliched. The visuals are of a high quality however.

This is not the worst thing I've seen - it is far superior to the truly dreadful Wheel of Time series Amazon produced last year - but if it wasn't for the Tolkien link I'd have turned it off after episode 2.

Tolkien has written a great story with great, heroic and mythic characters and events. Amazon will hopefully overhaul its writing for season 2.

All the heroes of the series were women and all the cowards and slaves were men! Amazon has just broadcast to the world just how much they don't understand about Tolkien. Before I begin, I have nothing against the actors cast for the roles. They did what they could with maybe not getting cast in the right roles and the horrible mish-mash plot they were given. Most of my problems stem from the fact that Amazon has consistently declared that they are following the source material and it is clear that they blatantly have not. First, the show struggles with any sort of consistent pacing. To top that off, the show never stays with any one scene subplot to develop it. Further complicating the matter is despite the fact that the show is "canon" and that they "tried to stick to the source material", the show couldn't be further from Tolkien's actual works. The show runners made the prologue far too confusing for noobies/casual fans and changed it far too much for avid fans.(I will give them the fact that they are trying to compress over 2,000 years of prologue, so that can't be easy, and, yes, I am aware that they only have rights to certain things). Secondly, it felt generic at best and a woke/politically correct rip-off of LOTR at worst. The GC is fine, if a little bit too shiny. The map transition are cool, but the common person doesn't know where in Middle Earth it is. The elves look too human and the costumes either look too distressed, not distressed enough or just plane weird. Thirdly, the character changes that have happened and all for the worst. Galadriel and Elrond have the biggest, most glaring personality changes (thanks to the show, Galadriel has been transformed into a whiny, punch-first-ask-question-later Karen while Elrond has been stripped of his respect and all the weight of his heritage). In addition, Celebrimbor (who is in canon, most likely near Galadriel's age) is waaaay older than he should be and Finrod has suffered a complete dis-service because he is turned into some sort of Sauron monster hunter when the opposite is true. They have also decided to leave out important characters like Celeborn, Celebrian and Anarion in favor of adding in their own characters and subplots. My fourth complaint is the dialogue. Some scenes felt flat while others felt far too forced. This bad writing was compounded with some questionable actors casted. My fifth complaint is anything and everything to do with the knock-off "hobbits". They are not necessary in the slightest nor were they even there. Stop trying to make this the LOTR where hobbits save the day. A further complaint, I have no problem with including "character of color" (thought I find that inclusion shaky at best; Tolkien wrote his works as a mythology for England/Norther Europe, not the world. I would have the same reaction if suddenly we suddenly had to include Native American characters in Mulan or European characters in an African folktale). My problem is the consistent use of only one. We have ONE black elf (not a very smart one at that), ONE black dwarf and ONE black human. Come on Amazon, you're not even trying to do anything beyond tick the boxes so that the politicians won't hate you. My last complaint is the music. Don't get me wrong, thus far the music is the only consistently positive thing to come out of the show. My problem is the fact that the music feels generic and does not at all capture the majesty and gravitas that Howard Shore was able to capture with his score.

While I am aware that we have only seen the first two episodes of this epic length series, I am not terribly optimistic about where it is going. My final thoughts: loose the "hobbits", loose the speechless Gandalf look-a-like, stop putting characters in the wrong locations and actually READ the source material. If you are a die-hard Tolkien fan, this show will let you down again and again. If you are looking for a generic fantasy show because you finished GOT and you need to play something while you are folding laundry, go for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story is kinda bad. I think that even a 11 years old kid can have a better imagination to invent something better than this. It has 1% action and 99% jokes "dramatic" moments. Nothing happens. It's just so boring. I do not really know for what are these "writers" paid.
The music is decent, the graphics too, but some characters are just unbearable (the face of the black elf seems to ask for punches for real like most of the elves faces). Galadriel seems to have no scope in life, but to revenge her dead joke brother (that battle scene in which he died looks like a bad joke, the soldiers seem to not even fight but to just move their hands randomly).
By the way, guess that an elf doesn't really have the power to smash those heavy rocks, but there are many phases without logic in this series.
Overall, this series should be watched if you don't have a better alternative.

The characters are bland, lifeless vessels that cary out a boring story. The bizarre part is how they have beloved source material and maybe even more beloved Peter Jackson Trilogy to lean on. The men just hate the elves. No reason. Galadriel is a one dimensional soldier. Elrond, the brilliant leader, is banal and tactless.
The actors themselves I feel are doing a serviceable job. The dialogue the are forced to bring to life is a brutal march of exposition in which the actors do what they can to bring the miserably dead script to life.

It looks great most of the time. The first revealing of the resplendent halls of Khazad-Dum gave me hope that the show would hit its stride. But the story is ruined by an empty army of characters you can’t bring yourself to care about.
The result is a bland, water-color story hung in a beautiful frame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've never written a "review" before. This show is beautiful, has it's good moments sometimes but I'm sorry, mainly a disappointment for a lot of reasons. First, it's unlogical a lot of times. For example: Elrond swore to durin not to tell anyone about mithril. Then he proceeds to tell Celebrimbor and when Celebrimbor say he needs to tell gil-galad about mithril, Elrond say he can't broke his oath... Right after he broke his oath. These moments are annoying but let's go to another reason. In my opinion a lot of times Galadriel acts like a children. She is idk how many hundreds if not thousands years old, I expect a little maturity sometimes if your that old. In the latest episode (6) how she threats Adar at the end was cringy af. (I'll let you live bcause... then proceeds to almost kill him afeter 5 seconds of that) and I could go on... I'm sure these ppl are good actors but the writing was poorly executed... It's trying to be woke at times, but sadly it doesn't got the inpact... At least for now. This ofc is only my opinion. Sorry for the grammar, still learning. Take care Expand

(It doesn't quite feel like bad fan fic as Halo does but pretty damn close) with all the stage direction as the village am-dram group after an all night bender. The actors for the most part are serviceable to good, a few accents flip around from time to time but that could be the direction as much as the actors ability / reshoots. I've watched worse but I'm in no hurry to go back to this if it does last 5 seasons there is a ton of better stuff to watch, HoD for example right now. Expand

First thing, Im putting aside 2 facts from my score.

1- The series mostly ignores the original writing story. Its very loosely based on it, using certain places, characters and facts, but most of the content is completely "original". I don´t just mean they "filled holes" with original stuff, (thats quite needed as the tolkien writings just described this era as historic events with no real novelization wich could be portrayed on screen) But also that this "original stuff" heavily modify or even contradict those writings.
As said, my score ignores this fact, as i watched the show purely as a fiction work "loosely based" on a certain book.

2- The "diversity thing". As I´m watching the show as a completely new thing unrelated to the book, im ignoring also the complains about changing or adding certain features as elves being dark skinned, or whatever. Still there is something strange and that feels forced, and im not refering to "black elves or female black dwarfs", but to the fact that diversity is absurdly forced into nonsense. Example: The queen of Numenor being black, while al numenoreans, including her father, are white, and the fact numenoreans are also a ethnic. The same happens with the leader of the hobbits, thats still stranger as they are a relatively small and absolutely closed isolated group. Still, while it seems a weird move to pretend a specific group or society is racially diverse even when its so closed or isolated, I can overlook it as well.

So why 3?

Well, at the start the show is somewhat watcheable, and the production and screenplay is very good. The point is: the show is plainly boring. It has some interesting moments, but its quite irregular.

It also abuse the "pretended deep conversations" stuff. Somehow feels like they forced those a lot, maybe to try give it a more book or lyric feeling vibe, emulating Tolkien style, but with little success.

And lastly, the characters. Its hard to empathize or sympathize with any of them. Galadriel seems to idealized, but at the same time is quite insolent and whimsical. Halbrand starts as a somehow Aragorn clone, on aesthetics but also on its background. Elrond-During may be actually somewhat ok. The most interesting plot actually would be the one around Arondir.

So, somehow we have a show with incredible production resources, great visuals. But with a somehow generic plot, generic characters, and as much, average writing, wich feels boring after few chapters hence with some rollercoasting moments.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Do yourself a favor and watch the witcher instead. I didn't mind the first 2 episodes of ring of power because i understand world building and introducing characters, but nothing is happening even after 3 episodes, contrast that to the witcher after 3 episodes and holy **** - Geralt is already the butcher of blaviken, taken on a princess striga, saved by Triss Merigold and spared by the elf king Filavandrel. Ciri arrives at brokilon forest after fleeing Cintra and Yennefer has already gone from a pig feeding hermit to the beautiful, powerful strong willed sorceress that we know and love.

Like i didn't expect it to be on the level of the witcher or to be on it's level for pacing but geez you need to have me invest in something, teasing me with celebrimbor for 10 seconds isn't enough.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Three episodes in and nothing of note happened, we have four separate storylines going super slow. Still world building and introducing new characters. Im not knowledgable at all about the lore but even to me some of it seems of, especially some of the designs.

WHere did the budget go? there are a few beautiful CGI shots of cities and thats it. The sets look plain bad and even some CGI(dagger lying on the boat at the end of E1...) just horrendous.

This is some average TV and doesnt really feel like LOTR

Update after E6 - Where did the budget go?? CGI only?? the battle for Southlands had 40 people vs 40 orcs in a fight over a village which has 5 buildings. WTF?!
Numenoria, the biggest human civilization had only 5 ships total? two destroyed so can only send three now, what a joke. I was trying to enjoy this as an epic fantasy show but its not epic at all.

If you are a Tolkien fan and / or read the books it is even more painful. They made a lot of poor decisions for the show like developers with barely any experience for the most expensive show ever made. Galadriel is nothing like in the books or movies and is only defined by being always angry and burning bridges with other characters and often also viewers. As a sidenote even one of her enemies named Adar says that the search for Morgoths (Big bad guy before Sauron) successor should have ended in her mirror and at that point I agree as she wants to kill all Orcs he considers his children painfully before his eyes just to torture him (By the way Adar is a great character and worthy addition). This is monstrous and unforgivable if you are the hero of the show. Then there are the Hobbits which they have to rename Harfoots because they have only the right to the appendixes of LotR (Why was this greenlighted?). They are not different from Hobbits being just the most common type of all Hobbits. Those are horrible people that abandon everyone to death that falls back behind on their travels. This made it hard to like them. To be fair there are some good parts. I like the Dwarven stuff and characters and this includes Disa who is great (many did not expect this). Gil-Galad is also good and I can see sparkles of something that could be an amazing story. Sadly the slow pacing and horrible dialogues ruin a lot of the story. While the visuals aka the CGI effects are amazing I wonder where all the money was used. The settings, costumes and armor often look cheap. Also they name everyone who criticize the show as istaphobs. Has ever insulting your core audience helped to make a show a success? Lastly I ask myself why buying the rights Tolkien if you abandon most of what is Tokien. At the end you have a generic fantasy show that is Tolkien in name only with poor writing and not many characters I liked. I give a 3/10 and if you are more of a Tolkien fan than me you should read this as 1/10. Expand

No Spoil.

I've watched all five of the currently aired episodes so as to be able to provide the show with a fair review. The first two episodes had me excited for the potential that they represented. Had I only watched those episodes I would have oscillated between a 6.5 to 7.0 rating. By the end of episode 3, I would have given it about a 6.0. By episode 4, I had abandoned all hope that the show would be able to provide anything more than a CW-level narrative (e.g., Smallville), and watching episode 5 has further confirmed this view. The show's rating now sits at a very firm 3.0 for me and it would take a significant deviation from current formulaic plot structure and surface level dialogue to convince me that this show will ever offer anything more than it currently does.

As with any viewing experience, your mileage may vary, and what you as a viewer look for in a show may differ from what I look for. That being said, I will try to provide the pros and cons of the show as I see them.

Pros:

1. Whoever did the 3d modelling for the animals was on point. I feel that the wolves and wargs were extremely well-done and have a great unique-but-recognizable quality to them.

2. The content to which (I presume) they are building towards always gets me excited (i.e., the battle of Dagorlad).

3. If you enjoy movies such as Disney's Star Wars films and/or the Marvel movies, I feel like there are definitely some similarities in terms of plot structure, dialogue, and visual presentation.

Cons:

1. I don't think the writers understand how to build meaningful social relationships. Etiher that, or they don't understand how to accurately convey a meanigful social relationship. Following from this, the character's decisions lack meaning and substance. As an example, characters who are vehemently opposed to something will (in the same scene in which they are decrying their outrage) completely switch their set of ideals at the behest of a poorly made and cliche-driven speech.

2. The narrative is so concerned with not rushing to the finish line, that literally nothing of substance has happened in the last 5-episodes that I've watched. To contrast this, I would have been nearly through the entire movie triology of the Lord of the Rings by this point.

3. Characters behave in unpredictable ways. For instance, Nori is unphased by a man smashing into the ground in a ring of fire, or by his apparent use of magic that warps her very reality, but, when said man accidentally gets some "magic ice" on her arm (through no fault of his own), and then attempts to apologies, she runs away in fear.

Summary: I'm meandering and my girlfriend just made me a danish, so I'm going to go and eat that. I'll probably forget that I wrote this but, watch it if you want to. I think it's god awful, but I also thought the marvel movies and the new starwars were awful, not everyone agrees. I strongly feel that this is PG13 level writing at its most mediocre, and I guess I just expected more from the Lord of the Rings. Thanks for reading.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this. Peter Jackson's trilogy is my favorite piece of entertainment ever. I've read all of Tolkien's work, and like to think I have a decent knowledge of Arda, Middle Earth, etc.

I went into this completely blind not listening to any of the hype or criticism surrounding it so I could go in and judge it based on its own merits.

Sadly, it disappoints far more than it succeeds. The writing is absolutely atrocious. None of the plot threads fit together at all, and the timeline is all over the place. One scene concerning the Harfoots encompasses over a week, then you jump right back to Galadriel's story, which has only moved a couple hours. I think they would have benefitted from telling a simplier narrative than trying to shove so many plot points down our throats so quickly. It's also clear that this is a work of fanfiction by the writing team. Characters in this act nothing like the characters in the books. Things that happen in this show directly contradict Tolkien's books, like Gandalf arriving by meteor instead of arriving on a boat with the other Istari, or Galadriel getting on a boat in episode 1 to go West when in the novels she committed herself to Middle Earth at the end of the 1st age, over a thousand years prior, and changed her relationship with her own husband, who is absent from this show outside one reference in episode 7. It also tries to misdirect you as to who Sauron really is, but anyone with a passing knowledge of the source material know who Sauron is immediately, and the twist did not work at all. Character motivations make no sense whatsoever a lot of the time and change for no reason just so the plot can happen. Oh, and the Southlanders plan of leaving their hilltop fortress with only one entry point to fight in their village instead with no walls or bridges needed to access instead...WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU DO THAT?!

The acting is very hit or miss. Charlie Vickers, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Sophia Nomvette, Lloyd Owen, and Joseph Mawle are all excellent in their roles. Unfortunately, the shows really hinges on the performance of Morfydd Clark, and DEAR GOD, she's more wooden than a Numenorian ship. She is just awful as Galadriel. For the first half of the show (where virtually nothing interesting happens), she does nothing but treat every single person around her like crap, demanding things from strangers and throwing a tantrum when she doesn't get her way. This is not how Tolkien envisioned Galadriel at all.

The production value is also hit or miss. Some of the cities like Numenor and Kazadum look fantastic one moment, then very cheap the next. The orcs by and large look fantastic most of the time, but the Numenor and Elvish Armor looks incredibly cheap. There are also some terrible CGI sequences (the warg scene with "Gandalf", the creation of Mt. Doom) that feel very rushed and cheap. And at $60 million an episode, NOTHING about this show should come off as cheap or rushed. There's just no excuse.

And lastly, it is very clear that they want to make Sauron and the orcs layered, and that IS NOT what Tolkien wanted. There is literally an "Orcs lives matter" speech from Adar in Episode 6. Sauron and Morgoth are representations of pure evil. Making them complicated just cheapens the courage and sacrifices of the elves and men who fought to defeat them. Tolkien didn't live in a world filled with grey. Evil was evil to him.

In short, this show is a disaster. It's boring, poorly written with very inconsistent production values, some good performances overall weighed down by too many poor ones, and just plain disrespectful to the source material. And that has nothing to do with the race of the characters (see my favorite performances above), it's that they don't honor the characters and stories Tolkien wrote. They wanted to tell their own story with Tolkien's characters, and that to me is just unacceptable.

3.5/10. Do not recommend

Just invent new ones if you want a more modern take. Also, if you are going to spend almost a billion dollars, why not get a couple of big stars to do more of the heavy lifting? Watched the first two episodes as I was willing to give this show a chance.

The show disappoints for numerous reasons and falls short in pretty much everyway. The exception is the visuals of the environments which are all spectacular. The visual effects artists have done exceptional work.

I don’t believe the show has been graded effectively as the Lord of the Rings films were. This lack of final polish, unfortunately leaves the characters like the elves just looking like humans with pointy ears in good cosplay. The shows visual style lacks the ethereal effect the the team working on Lord of the Rings achieved so well.

Unfortunately all other areas of the show are mediocre at best. Wooden stilted acting from pretty much the entire cast does not lend to believability or bring impact to the story… if feels as if I’m watching actors walking around in costumes rather than characters living in a real (fantasy) world. The actors are probably doing their best with mediocre writing and a nonsensical narrative; it is fairly obvious none of them actually believe in or are living the role, they are simply reading lines from a script.

The writing is nonsensical with a plot that jumps around with out any rhyme or reason. Even though I am fairly well versed in Tolkien, I was confused by the motivations and desires of the characters… but then it dawned on me, these characters are NOT the characters from Tolkiens Legendarium, they have the same names but are not the same characters. They are merely corporate creations, doppelgängers if you will, that have replaced the characters Tolkien invented.

I do have sympathy for the writers, however inept the job they have done is. As Amazon only had the rights to the appendecies of the Lord of the Rings, and could not use material from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, History of Middle Earth and so on there was not much to work with. I understand a lot of the narrative and plot had to be written from scratch with only a vague outline to go on.

This brings me to my main point. This show should never have been made in the first place as the creative team never had the rights to the material that would allow a show like this to succeed.

It screams of Amazon wanting their own high fantasy ‘Games of Thrones’ and merely using the recognition of ‘The Lord of Rings’ as a marketing tool to sell their mediocre product. A well know quote from Ian Malcolm comes to mind.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is not awful. There are definitely worse things to watch, but I can't help but compare it to the actual lore from the books and movies. For being a prequel it changes the characters too much for them to even be considered the same characters. If you didn't watch/read the originals then it's just an average fantasy show with unlikable characters. Galadriel is the most arrogant and annoying prick, she is right about everything until the "Twist" in the final episode. Elrond is pretty good being a much younger version of himself that is seen in the later films. As a lord of the rings prequel, it's absolutely awful. Every character they try to have twists can instantly be predicted in the first few episodes. They try to give suspense around characters who we know are alive because THEY ARE IN THE MOVIES!!! The only way to make this show watchable is with friends, or with drinks.

As just a fantasy show, it's 5/10

But as a lord of the rings prequel, it's a 3/10 shoulda made the Silmarillion.
