Very sad how Amazon turned this potential into a generic fantasy series. I also don't understand where this incredible budget was used, the cgi effects are good, but the actors and costumes certainly didn't cost much.

This show suffers from many problems, all of which could have been fixed by hiring better writers and other details. First off they fired the tolkein scholar hired to keep things to lore, because he was doing his job! The lead actress felt too stiff and wooden in her acting, and she played Galadriel like she was a mary sue. Doing everything and making everyone else look bad. The script was poorly written, as well as the production values as well as directorial work just pure shoddy. Now I would give this a 0, however it had maybe 2 points it did well in....

The visuals and music were the best parts of it, the backgrounds and set pieces felt like tolkein despite everything else feeling like they took his work to a chop shop and only kept what they wanted. Granted they were working with incomplete notes, and they had to fill gaps. However had the IP been in the hands of the family still they would not have allowed this, it is only because the group that holds the rights just wants to use it as 'content' to print money and will do anything for money. So overall this show feels like a betrayal to the fans of these works, and the fact you cannot leave reviews on amazon and IMDB limits how low you can review it says they are in damage control. This is just an honest review of the show, and how the company is handling it to demonstrate the reality. I would not recommend this show on prime, if you want something to watch go watch the wheel of time, The Boys, The man in the high castle, or anything else on prime and you will have a much better viewing experience. This is one of the biggest flops in history, and it will cost them way too much to recoup all the losses from it. I wish they had of done the legacy of these works justice, i wish it had of been good, but at the end of the day we have to call a lemon for what it is.… Expand

It's a shame to see Tolkien's legacy being used so sadly.

I would like to point out that for me I don't see any problems with the "woke" agenda. The best character so far is Durin's wife, Disa.

I tried to get my family to watch it, to maybe hear opinions from people who aren't fans of Tolkien's works and Peter Jackson's adaptations. My wife lost interest in the first thirty minutes and found the series too childish.… Expand

Bref, en ce qui concerne le plumage, on a bel et bien l’impression de se retrouver dans la Terre du Milieu…

Cependant, ce beau plumage montre quand même ses limites, car il faut bien des acteurs et des actrices pour l’incarner -tout n’est pas qu’effets numériques !- or, quelle bizarrerie, quelle infamie woke que de constater l’africanisaton au forceps de toute la distribution ! on a même des elfes (de la forêt) noirs… mais également des naines noires et ainsi de suite… ils sont partout !

Les wokistes ont donc encore frappé et nous imposent leur diversité qui n’a pas lieu d’être dans ce monde de fantasy hérité et inspiré des cultures européennes séculaires et caucasiennes. D’ailleurs, les wokistes oublient systématiquement d’inclure des Asiatiques et pourquoi me direz-vous ?… parce qu’ils sont -encore- trop clairs !

Alors évidemment, les Hauts Elfes sont quand même blancs mais c’est franchement tout juste… Mais ce n’est pas le seul souci de cette série de merde, car l’histoire se traîne lamentablement, les comédiens et comédiennes jouent mal -mal dirigés sans doute- et les bavardages incessants sont vraiment assommants tandis que l’action -rare- se laisse aller au cut & move.

Les épisodes sont trop longs et malgré leur nombre restreint (8 en tout), il ne se passe rien et/ou lorsqu’il arrive éventuellement quelque chose, on n’y croit pas une seconde ! l’incrédulité demeure en effet constante et se mêle de temps à autre à un ridicule involontaire mais bien réel. Sadly that was not to be. When ep. 1 aired it was mess, next one even more so. I decided to wait for season 1 to finish, then let some time pass before posting any comment. Just let things cool a bit, give myself chance to watch it again from the start. It didn't help, show is awful in almost all regards. Scenery and effects are good, lots of money got put in obviously. Everything else is catastrophe. Story is bad to the level of offense to intelegence. Acting is bad. Characters are totally "non Tolkien". Disaster all in all… Expand

I was really excited for a trip into Middle Earth, this is not it.
The dialog, action, and acting are something you would expect to find in a community theater. The show is just bad, which is shocking considering the amount of money spent. Avoid.

Characters are directly not related to the Tolkien versions of the same people. An absolute farce. Galadrial is in places she never was, doing things she never did... And saying words fundementally against what real Galadrial would say and do. Elrond is nothing but a lazy anti war Politician now... Not the greatest of the Elven Warriors to possibly ever exist... And it seems to absolutely ignore the fact Elrond is basically Galadrials Grandson and very much heeds her advice and wisdom... Not in this show. Just terrible... The molestation of Tolkien.… Expand

The show have good things, the most obvious, is a high budget production, good looks, feels nice to see big elves and dwarf cities in their prime. I enjoyed also the beauty of simple things, the manners of the language, talking about how to enjoy things like light, feels, the use of methaphor....it's nice.

But there are to many bads in the show to give it a good grade, to put it in one word, sadly it's woke. Seems like the enemy all the time is society, the characters are settled in their little universes, elves, man, hobbits....the characters want to do things and the people close to them let them know that is not wanted, they must quit their dreams and join the fold, which they do not and they are righteous to do so, even when they're not. Galadriel may as well and up triumpht for pusuing the evil and not giving up, but she does not come relatable at all to me, she's just stuburn and entitled.

You can see also interacial relationships everywhere and mixed color people everywhere, and it just puts out of place, at least for me as a fan of the books. The world of Tolkien is vast, the regions of Middle Earth that wee see on the movies and in this TV show are really a small part of the world which would be the equivalent of Europe in our world, to the East and south there are plenty more regions in which other men live. I could get people from the East visiting and being there, but the show presents it like the settlements have mixed etnicities as a normal thing, and, again, it puts you off, does not feel natural.

I would feel the same if the show took place in the East for example (which I would welcome to see, a story of the blue mages for example), and suddlendly you see the cities filled with white people.

And seeing woman dwarves with no beard..... The story so far does not catch you anywhere. You can pass the time watching it and it's obviously selling you that something is going to happen, Sauron returning and all but I don't really care much for any of the storylines.

Laslty, if you know about the books, you'll see that the show is quite different, the map and events from the first age are wrong, the whole Sauron story is wrong (he was not haunted for example and considered to be good), the king of the elves was not so blind and careless, he was actually the one thinking a danger was coming, the elves did not need permission to go back to Valinor, they did not have elves watching people accross middle Earth, no things falling out of the sky, Mithril was already being discovered, the gate of Kazad dun did not exist yet, the one with dwarf friend was Celebrimbor.....Many many things that are wrong and they are like that because the showrunners chose to, and they also chose to use original characters instead of canon ones, which they are not in the show.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong about doing something new and original, but if you want to do that, do something entire new, don't take an already made story and change it to something else. It seems that you only do that to exploit the already stablished fame of that art and get an easy cash grab.… Expand

The Showrunner had to change many aspects of LOTR lore to assert their own agenda that it totally ruined the show. They created and twisted existing characters so much that it's unrecognizable. If they didn't use LOTR and just created a totally new fantasy series, everyone wouldn't have any problem with it, but by doing show they just shot themselves in their foot. This defiantly doesn't feel like Tolkien's world. All the paid critics and bots working for Prime won't save this series, the fans have spoken, this is going to be the BIGGEST FLOP in Cinematic HISROY!… Expand

There is nothing magical about the Elves anymore. Short hair, multiracial, no glow, no thoughtful dialogue... They're just like real people now.

Hobbits are multiracial, and don't look short anymore. They also look like real people... that are filthy and homeless.

Dwarves are multiracial. And there are white southerners too. Middle earth is now modern earth.

The fantasy is gone from this fantasy setting.

Too many plotlines that go nowhere. Costumes are cheap. Galadriel struggles with all the cowardly and weak men in the world. She is strong independent woman, don't need no man, and yet she is constantly put down by them.

Why do everyone detest elves? Where does this come from? Because casual racism is needed somehow?

With Elrond's plotline, the show appears to be pro industrialism. Maybe he'd like to burn down a forest to further his goal.
Everyone knew this would happen. It's still disappointing.

They have no idea what Tolkien was writing about, do they?… Expand

Начну с того, что являюсь поклонником произведений о средиземье Толкина. Начну с актёров. Почему большинство эльфов в сериале страшные? Это ладно, но почему они старые??? Не буду перечислять, но когда я увидел Келебримбора, то охренел. Его играет 60и летний мужик! Дорогие авторы, у Толкина все эльфы выглядели как 20и летние юноши. Даже Галадриэль которой (сведения разнятся) было к тому времени около 5000 лет, поразила Фродо своей ЮНОЙ красотой!
Ну, конечно, чернокожих актёров в сериале, наверное только ленивый не ругал. Не имею ничего против чернокожих, но во Властелине колец им не место. К тому же здесь у всех очень странные гены. У белых дети черные, у черных белые. Странно. А! Забыл. Толерантность взглядов! Маразм!
Теперь по поводу самой Галадриэль. Откуда авторы взяли, что она как следопыт лазила по горам, плавала кролем по морям, спала в грязи и махала мечом как Данте? Ах, ну да, забыл. Феминизьм! Баба равна (зачеркнуто) сильнее мужука!
Теперь по поводу "мохноногов" или протохоббитов. Почему они такие грязные? Ведь у Толкина хоббиты это невероятно, до фанатизма чистолюбивый народ, не выносящий беспорядка.
Теперь Гендальф. Я так понял, что автор сериала большой фанат Diablo 3! Иначе почему Гендальф падает с неба как Тираэль? Откуда вы это взяли? Что за чушь? У Толкина сказано, что истари ЯВИЛИСЬ в средиземье в виде старцев. Где вы нашли падение с неба???
Историю создания колец вообще выбросили на помойку. Ведь Келебримбор создавал кольца не один, а со своим другом гномом-кузнецом Нарви. Где гном? При том им помогали лучшие кузнецы-эльфы. Где эльфы? А тут втроём Келебримбор, Элронд и Галадриеэль (какая чушь) дунули-плюнули и опа три кольца готовы! Я не говорю уже о том, что три эльфийских кольца были созданы последними из девятнадцати. Шик! К тому же Саурон явился к Келебримбору в «прекрасном обличье» посланника Валар по имени Аннатар. При чем здесь какой то Халбранд, "король южан"?
Ну и Адар? Кто это такой, откуда взялся? Я охренел когда узнал, что слово Мордор, по мнению автора, происходит от имени Адар. Земля адара, мир - дара, мордор! Мордор означает "Страна тьмы", на черном наречии. Вот и всё, никакого Адара!
Короче, для поклонников произведений Толкина, сериал это просто помои!
А современным детям, тем из них кто книг не читал и кому ваще насрать на первоисточник, сериал может даже и понравится.… Expand

Incredibly sad. I really hope this isn’t what Tolkien is remembered for. This had nothing to do with his vision. At least there is a strong female lead and diverse cast.

Galadroolia is full of arrogance, hate, and spite. Ignorant of diplomacy. I thought she was over 1,000 years old? Galadriel is unbearable. Most characters are inconsistent and not very smart. The plot is all over the place (whose idea was it to go back and forth between like 4-5 different plot lines??). The music does not stand out at all, it's forgotten the moment the episode is over.
What the writers thought were clever plot twists were just dumb ideas that never should've been added! Even ignoring LOTR lore, looking at this as a generic fantasy TV show, I'd say it sucks and I would not go on watching. I had hope it would get better toward the end, but no, it gets worse. Good looks. Lore changes might be understandable considering the rights. Six episodes in and I'm giving up ! With one question though.

Cringe inducing dialogues delivered by amateurs in the service of a snail paced plot, probably written by a 16 years old who focused way too much on shoehorning modern tropes such as ethnic diversity or the strong woman figure into the story, to a point it becomes absolutely ridiculous (and polarizingly counter productive).
And the more they try to emulate what Peter Jackson did with Tolkien's material, the more it falls flat and make this show failing miserably at being even remotely entertaining.
The ridiculous horse acrobatics of miss-clenched-teeths AKA Galadriel just definitely signaled me I was done wasting my free time with this borefest of childish gimmicks.
So I guess I'll give a point for the nice CGIs… Expand

This also suffers from boredom which no CGI can mask. All this show will have as fans are shills and fake fans that is no base or foundation for a solid TV series with re-watchable content.

I'm struck by the fact that the developers actually took a bit of a look at the Lord of the Rings lore. Unlike Peter Jackson's movies, the events of the first age are addressed here (albeit briefly). Important events such as the destruction of the 2 Trees of Valinor and the subsequent war against the dark ruler Morgoth.

About the story:
The story is mostly true to lore (so far). What is new is that Galadriel tries to avenge her brother Finrod Felagund, who was killed by Sauron in the first age. In itself a good idea, in the books Finrod was just dead and no one cared, the war just went on. Here, on the other hand, a little more importance is given to this actually important figure. However, the developers also made some stupid mistakes: the half-elf Elrond, for example, was excluded from a meeting of the royal council in the first episode because he is not a full-blooded elf...WHAT? Elrond is the great-grandson of Turgon, the predecessor of King Gil-Galad as High King of the High Elves. NEVER would they dare exclude him from a council meeting, for he is the rightful heir to the throne should Gil-Galad die! If you can overlook these mistakes, you get an entertaining fantasy adventure - but I've only seen the first two episodes, so beware, I don't know if there won't be worse mistakes in the upcoming episodes. However... the war against Morgoth is over and the free rulers of Middle-earth are preparing for a time of peace (just like in Tolkien's The Silmarillion).

So is the series well or rather poorly realized?
Difficult question... actually, it's mediocre at best.... Why? Well, Amazon has decided to make some modern adjustments to the characters. For example, the elven princess Galadriel is now suddenly a warrior (representing the strong woman in the main role) and in principle there is nothing wrong with that, BUT there is one problem: Galadriel is actually a witch and NOT a warrior. I can understand why Amazon chose this path, BUT to rewrite, replace or as happened here, rob already existing characters of their identity for ideological reasons is an absolute no-go.

My suggestion to Amazon: If you need characters in the future to represent certain groups of people or want to do inclusion for ideological reasons, please invent a new character, like you did with the elf Arondir for example. Please don't change existing characters that are loved by the fans....… Expand

Tolkien was such a great writer, any adaptation of his work should be engaging to watch, but amazon's version is ponderous and boring.

Amazon's Elrond is also a snooze fest, but in more meek and mild way to galadriel(he's a bit of a wimp if i'm being honest and i'm convinced it'll stay that way under these current writers).

All we need now is for meteor man to be gandalf and the destruction of famous tolkien characters will be complete(because we know they'll ruin gandalf as well).

Gave it 1/10 for the music.… Expand

What did I just watch...First and foremost, this isn't Tolkien and I am glad he and his son are not around to see this. Cons:

Costume design and care is CW level of investment and creativity
Music a big wet fart when compared to Jackson's Pros:
Chris and JRR are not alive to see this

I hope this is a lesson to Hollywood about respecting IPs, and if you are going to make a story off something beloved like Tolkien, do it right...this is just fan fiction bad, handled by amateurs, and show obvious contempt for the fan base.… Expand

It has nothing to do with Tolkien's vision and spirit. The dialogue is awful without any deep meaning. The actors look very amateur with baby faces, there's no epic feeling in this at all.

The landscapes and the overall film look is ok, there's no problem in those. But the plot and the actors are really awful. It looks like a childish D&D movie, not for serious fans.

It looks like a cheap version of Lord of the Rings and I hope Amazon will create a new series with a serious approach rather than this high-school drama.… Expand

Only good point in this series is landscape - for this 1 point.

Everything else it is total misunderstanding: - there is no Tolkien in this - in first episode only role which is decent is Elrond (not good enough to earn next point), allOnly good point in this series is landscape - for this 1 point.
