However, the drama of the episode made the story even stronger putting more life and blood into it as to a post-apocalypse fantasy. Enjoyed it! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look, the story barely progressed and the cover of the show, shows Ellie and Joel. The GAMES show ellie and joel, so why the heck is an hour of run time used up on Bill, who I rather see alive than to waste an hour showing a filler romance. Its just weird that they used this time to push out an agenda, the game does not centralize on gay couple but this episode surely did. Its just plain filler that couldve just been 20 mins of filler and it would still leave an impact. I think this filler was longer than it should have been and could easily been cut down and still continue the story Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate it, they turned a subtly written character into a stereotype. Bill was always gay, that's not the problem. They turned a character with clear sociopathic/psychotic tendencies into a highschool romcom character. Also, in the game, his lover/partner(as the game refers to him as) was driven away by his psychotic tendencies and died as a result of it, he was dead before you met either by the way. Bill seemed completely destroyed by this, especially since he left a note telling why he left. Bill was a seemingly normal for the situation person and survivalist, the show's depiction is ridiculous and completely ungrounded. His husband/partner Frank was also gone/dead before you ever get to them in the game, in the show they killed themselves together which was completely antithetical to Bill's character. There's a lot more that fights against the suspension of disbelief the show sorely wants but I think vocalized my main points, they turned the character into a purely identitarian idea. On its own, it would have been fine, it's probably good for people who aren't a fan of the game, for me it's a break point since they'll change whatever they want and devote most of an episode to a flashback of a side character only to flanderize them in a way they never were. They also live in a semi idyllic town he's surrounded with a perimeter fence and booby traps that have a 100% success rate outside of human raiders in one scene who apparently never came back after a failed attempt. I'm the game, the town was still full of infected and he did what he had to survive and fight back, the show just **** all over his in game depiction while somehow making him an ubermensch.
In that regard, it also **** all over the show since it has already been shown that keeping a livable area in the quarantine zones is almost on par with concentration camps and at least one has already been overrun based on his husband's opening lines

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I do not think it is necessary to show sex behavior on screen and it was a somewhat unconvincing fast developed relationship, but still, it just showed us two people were in love, and excellent adaptation of the original storyline, Frank turns out to be a kind and jolly fellow which connects Bill, Tess and Joel, makes the story more intense and believable. Great acting, almost cried when Joel saw Tess’ name on the letter. But I am gonna miss the “Ellie giving middle finger to Bill” scene… As I really do not think Neil as a good director, but if he was in charge of the script, it shows him has great talent in writing. It is a mystery why he fxxked up the part II game so bad…Anyway, amazing episode, keep the good work! Expand

I think, is interesting to know a little bit more about the side characters, and I don't find it particularly bad this Bill and Frank's story, but, it does not help anything about the main story and the character development. I think, the school and the presentation of the new type of infected, the internal jokes and the relationship built between Ellie and Joel during this part of the story, is way better that what was presented to us in HBO's adaptation. Nice story, does not work for the main story. We could not have it, and all would be the same. So, that is why is a 5. The story is so amazing by itself, that you don't have to change it to be a success... please HBO, leave your politics aside, this story is already progressive, you don't have to double down on it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Blown away how good this was. In the game the story of Bill and Frank is understated and told mostly through environmental storytelling, that works in a game but not on TV.

What’s so clever here is how they realise that and tell a better story that is more suited to a different medium. The acting was first class, and tears were shed. Brilliant, captivating television and a reminder that even those that have played the games can get a lot from this show. There were also so many easter eggs for fans, getting changed into their game outfits, line for line dialogue in places and, my absolute favourite, ending on the window which shadows back to the title screen of the first game. I’ll forever think of Bill and Frank when I see this now. They are building beautifully on what came before. It’s rare I give a 10 to anything but this was masterfully done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel bad for giving this episode the same grade I gave the first one, but this is a 10. This episode could be taken a part from the series and made into a short movie, easily. It’s sad seeing the scores being tainted by butthurt bigots, who minded seeing to queer man being loved and in love. Yes, it deviates from the game. But so has every episode up until now. This episode made me fall in love with a simple character we didn’t know much about, and fall deeper in love with a character we’re well accustomed to. I knew what it was coming and when it goes coming, yet, I was on the edge of my seat all throughout the episode. Not only did Neil and Craig give us a lovely love story, but it gave us a deeper inside of the world and Tess and Joel’s dynamic duo. It deepened the connection of those watching, with those acting. I am really happy it took this direction and that they’re nailing it. Thank you so much for this, Shannon Woodward :) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This episode gives us a decent story of how one can rebuild their lives in a more positive manner in the apocalypse. It is well-acted, has a good emotional core, and serves as a nice, almost self-contained story within the show. But that is also where my problems with it lie. I cannot help but feel that more time should have been spent more time focusing on the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Though they still have enough time to build up a proper bond between these two, I feel like it would have been best to give it a little bit more focus in this episode. It should also be stated that some changes are made to a character from the game that doesn't entirely sit right with me (and here I will delve into spoilers)
Bill's little town is too utopian for my taste. In the game, it makes sense no one would raid the town, because of both the traps and the crazy amount of infected that Bill uses as a natural defense. In the show, the traps are there, but the infected are missing, which raises the question of why the town isn't dealing with more raider troubles. It also takes away from Bill's survivalist attitude a bit. I get that he is more of a domesticated fella here because he has Frank to look after, but I think I would have preferred him a bit more distrusting and pragmatic. Thus far, this is the weakest episode of the show in my opinion, and seeing that I am still willing to rate it a 7 is a good sign for the overall quality of the show up to this point. Looking forward to the next episode

Episode 3 was just a useless filler episode with 2 characters that provided nothing to the story but added a sex scene for whatever reason, I know it's HBO but this show would have been much better if it stuck to the father daughter bonding that the game had as it's main focus. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the greatest episodes of TV in recent memory. Bill and Frank's relationship was so real, so heartbreaking, and yet so happy in a series that won't have many happy moments. Watching Joel bottle his emotions at the end was handled brilliantly by Pedro Pascal as well. Absolutely incredible from start to finish and sets the standard for showing any relationship, not just LGBT relationships, for media in the future.

Also, screw the homophobes dropping zeros on this episode. You're irrelevant and will continue to become irrelevant as society rightly pushes you to the fringe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you were to take this episode by its self, without any context of the rest of the show, I think it's objectively near perfect. The story it tells is realistic and emotional, the acting is excellent, and might be the best of Nick Offermans career. But who is this episode for? For fans of the game, this episode expands on, and concludes the story for one of the games best characters, Bill, but it also changes the story in a way where the interaction with the main cast of the show is minimalized. It feels less impactful for Joel and Ellie, because Ellie never even met Bill or Frank, and the episode shows that there wasn't really a strong relationship between Bill and Joel. I feel like in this case, it doesn't really strengthen the core material, and doesn't change the story in a more positive manner. If it's for people who haven't played the games, I think this episode may actually be a mistep. The show is already starting to feel rushed as a ~40 hour game story is being condensed into 10 TV episodes. In the first episode we meet and lose Sarah, in the second episode we lose Tess, and the expectation that in this short amount of time we are supposed to emphasize with what Joel is going through is already a huge ask. Now in the 3rd episode we meet and lose Bill and Frank, who are tangential to the story at best. I wish I could give this episode two different ratings, because as a standalone episode it's probably a 10/10 and should win awards. As part of a series though, I feel like it does a pretty poor job of adding to the overall story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An incredible episode, close to if not a masterpiece of storytelling in a way that few episodes of TV can hold a candle to. We're talking Ozymandias of Breaking Bad level of perfect here. To take such a meaningful tale between two people in love and manage to see it from beginning to end in the backdrop of humanities doom, in such a short amount of screentime is incredible. Bill's personal growth to go from surviving to living as Frank brought out his best is a powerful telling of the power that love and companionship can have on a person. In the end, they lived life on their terms and made the absolute best out of the worst situation the world could throw at them. It will be incredibly difficult for viewers to get through this episode without shedding a tear. Expand

So far worst episode that brings nothing to the story but only purpose for that is to please certain agenda. Okay the scenery is beautiful and music is top notch, yet Neil butchered his very own story.

Episodio teve um ótimo começo mais se desenvolveu bem apático no meio levando quase para um filme pornográfico! Uma história que sempre gostei de contar a minha filha como uma ótima história! levou para um momento distorcido! de porno

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah, its a beautifull story and a good chapter, but it seems that Neil has forgotten what his own series is about, can we stop for a second to remember that frank commits suicide by hanging himself and bill lives in the middle of a town infested with cordyceps in the video game? They could have made a really epic and dramatic episode with the romance and desperation of both of them, but they have changed that to sex scenes with lots of facial hair, strawberries, delicious dishes and glasses of wine. It would have been a good episode if at the end bill woke up and it turned out that it was all a wet dream. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This episode was mixed for my taste as someone who played the game. the story line with Bill and Frank were executed greatly and the cinematography was done beautifully explaining Bill's love life on what happened off-camera in the game from another perspective which was done right.

but I feel like Niel lost the ball on this one, I understand not everything isn't supposed to be like the game but lets be honest - the part where Frank walks from the house yelling at bill (3 years later) is where Frank should've walked away and Bill should've stayed true to the core about his survivalist instincts and let him walk *scene cuts* and then showed the part where Joel and Ellie shows up to bills town and the moment we've been waiting for: When it came to bill and ellie's interactions would've been amazing and hilarious since they both would argue in the game. From the games POV this is the part where you have to get a truck battery from a high-school on the other side of town and you fight off infected, clickers and finally meet the bloater in the highschool gym then after being chased in the alley way you stumble upon a house where you meet Frank hanging from the ceiling and you get the note about what Frank said:

(note from game)
" Well Bill,
I doubt you'd ever find this note cause you were too scared to ever make it to this part of town. But if for some reason you did, I want you to know I hated your guts. I grew tired of this **** town and of your set-in-your-ways attitude. I wanted more from life than this and you could never get that.

And that stupid battery you kept moaning about ---I got it. But I guess you were right. Trying to leave this town will kill me. Still better than spending another day with you."

Good Luck,
Frank

then after acquiring the battery you go to the truck, start it and you have to push start it while 20 or so clickers are chasing behind you including infected. I feel like they should've went this route instead of just focusing on the romance scenes. a nice balance between love and survival and also Bill never died - that's what I like about his character too in that game we never knew what properly happened to him and I thought the show would finally tell us but they didn't. I'm a bit disappointed in this episode and how they killed off Bill sadly but I feel like Bill would be fighting still in honor of Frank to get back at those bastards for infecting him but as to this episode overall I may have to say that it could've gone different here not fully execute a gay romance scene for 45+ minutes - it should've been perfectly balanced between the two...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. By focusing on Bill's relationship with Frank, they completely missed the point.
It was long and unnecessary. No prejudice, but the kissing and sex scenes between the two were also exaggerated, in number and intensity. Totally distorted the direction of the show.

Yet despite thatLook I'm not a hater, Bill and Frank were a plenty cute couple AT FIRST, but it was so generic and 1 dimensional, and it just dragged on and on. In the game Bill loved Frank but they had issues, and Frank tried to leave Bill. Yet despite that in the end Bill still loved him, and it made for a complex character you could genuinely feel for. Instead we got given a generic hallmark tearjerker with a sooooooo sad double suicide, game Bill was a SURVIVOR, which made him realistic. Plus we were deprived of the Joel/Ellie/Bill scenes which had some of the best dialogue in the game, and in game it set the tone for how dangerous the world is, raiders, bloaters, etc. Instead we see the least terrifying post-apocalyptic raiders I've ever seen, genuinely. World building, stage setting, action, tone, you know all that stuff that makes TLoU great was thrown out the window for a generic love story. People say it's better, so go watch the hallmark channel and leave HBO for the big boy dramas with complex characters. This episode also kills the pacing, which already slowed way down in episode 2. I dunno, episode 1 started off with a 10, episode 9 was a snoozer but ended strong, and then this episode just... oof. No incredible intro clip, world building cut for cheesy romance, no incredible joel/ellie/bill dialogue, limp raiders, just yuck. Why does Hollywood have to insist on injecting bad writing into scripts these days? Like was the purpose just to enrage people and drum up online dialogue? I'm wildly liberal, fully vaxxed, and bisexual before anyone wants to attack me for saying this, but I am TIRED of intentionally inflammatory dialogue being slapped on for no other reason than to "own" someone. All you do is push people away, if you wanted to convert someone to not hating gay people, then congratulations your dumb dialogue pushed them away. While I laughed at the pandemic line at first, thinking about it (which I had a lot of time to do during the cheesy hallmark romance), it struck me that all of the stuff they're doing has no audience. None of what is being done is ground breaking to me, sorry I watched and loved broke back mountain. Their writing this episode was just a self congratulatory pat on the crotch, we did it boys, we wrote the gayest cutest couple alive and owned those dirty others with our terrible dialogue, hahaha, we win! Which is what this episode is, it's a writer jerking himself off to a fantasy that is franky one dimensional. You want a complex romance you need an entire season to develop it, what we got here was a telenovella quality tear jerker. Meanwhile an actually complex gay character just got steamrolled for something that people might whip out the popcorn and controversy for.

So frustrating to watch anything out of Hollywood anymore, nothing original, and anything that was original gets bastardized to drum up clicks and drama and whatnot. Like oh no, a complex character! Quick! Make it simpler and easy to understand! Oh and add a sex scene! Ohhhh *hollywood exec rubs nipples furiously* and add a double suicide!!! I guess this is what happens though when Hollywood only makes content for the common clay, you know, morons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When Nick Offerman was revealed to be playing Bill I was very excited to see this episode in particular but honestly it didn’t play out anything like the game possibly for the worse. As an adaptation I think it’s a unique if not contentious direction but ultimately for an otherwise faithful depiction thus far this episode completely derails the series to a near halt.

We pick up with Joel and Ellie serving as this week’s prologue to an otherwise mostly filler, flashback episode introducing doomsday prepper Bill on the days following the outbreak. We follow Bill over the years where he eventually meets Frank and a relationship blooms. There is some great background lore here but otherwise I felt too much time was spent with this relationship. It results in some unnecessary deviation, tons of filler, and a curious omission of some major set pieces by this point of the game in what’s been an otherwise mostly faithful adaptation beat for beat. Joel and Ellie take the backseat almost entirely and Nick Offerman’s Bill is almost intentionally antithetical to the source material’s character. I think up until the very end I expected Bill to survive and things to pick up with Joel and Ellie meeting him all distraught at his survival. I feel disappointed by an otherwise stellar fan cast and robbed of specific interactions between Bill, Joel, and Ellie. Bill’s actual message by this point in the game - protecting people will get you killed is substituted for a more optimistic message serving the narrative “save who you can” that’s beginning to feel a little hamstrung.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Acting was phenomenal in this episode. Also, very well executed in being sad. However, deviated far too greatly from the game. I don’t mind building backstory on frank and bills relationship but I don’t like how they killed off bill and didn’t add his badass entrance saving Joel and Ellie. I also don’t like how greatly the changed bill and Frank’s relationship. Also, they’re turning Ellie into a psychopath when in the games she is much more caring in ways. Overall, I feel like they could’ve utilized bill better while still adding to frank and making the episode gut wrenching, more action packed, and showing the great dynamic Ellie and bill had in the game. This was a pivotal time in the game building Joel and Ellie’s relationship which was done a little. Lastly, I wanted to see bill take out some more zombies. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett knocked their roles out of the park but I just feel like it was to distant from the main story to get me as invested as I was to the game during the bill section. Episodes have been 1 10/10
2 9/10
3 5/10 Episode 4 looks promising and faster paced
