This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you can’t live this episode for what it does, there’s something wrong with you. The episode does a great job showing what is possible even in the worst of times. It shows an extreme contrast to the vile world Joel and Ellie are in. The letter at the end from Bill to Joel hits him hard because he’s already failed Tess, but now he has Ellie to protect. The review bombers are nothing but homophobic bigots that can’t recognize a great TV performance if it hit them in the a5$ Expand

Episodes 1 and 2 were really good.
Episode 3 is over one hour of homosexual love.

I am in for good adventure stories. I am not into romantic flicks, let alone homosexual romance flicks.

In the game we have these stories told through scenarios, letters, and lines, like in the sewer with Henry and Sam, where they show the history of the families that sheltered there. Happy to know that they dedicated an episode to this. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

I will keep this short and sweet without spoilers, 1. Character Development was rushed and ruined
2. clear agenda pushing where even the director ADMITS he wanted to "trick" people into watching it
3. the writing much like the last of us Part 2 (the game) suffers from poor pacing and writing.

honestly the episodes before were written better and had solid acting in it however this episode you could tell was shoved in where even the actors didn't have their hearts put into it. Since the 2nd last of us game came out it feels as if anything to do with the franchise besides the first game is 2 steps backward, poor writing, bad judgement calls on what people are wanting, changing characters for no good reason even sometimes making them more foolish to push the plot forward. Here's hoping they bring the writing and pacing back up to par at the very least otherwise i don't think the rest of the series will be worth watching, which is unfortunate because in the first 2 episodes you could feel the love they put into it (except some characters changed for no reason and with no sense to it *cough*joelsdaughter*cough*) i had high hopes for the series only for them to be dashed with this useless episode that has nothing to do with the actual plot

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited a week to review this episode. I wanted to replay this section of the game, and rewatch the episode so I could be fair.
Maybe my opinion is colored by personal experience, but I like this story so much better than just another hate filled body hanging from a rafter. Yes, it is a departure from the source material. From "Can I ha..." "No", to "seatbelt" it only progresses the story a little. It provides a bit of context for the relationship between Joel and Ellie, shows how they begin their actual journey, though not much else. But it is truly an amazing story. It is beautiful, and exciting. It is relatable and captivating. And, finally, it is soul wrenching.
This is honestly the most beautiful one hour and fifteen minutes of TV I have watched in over forty years of life. Please don't allow the biases which have been beaten into your skull to ruin it for you. Don't allow your love for the game to overrule the beauty of storytelling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The third episode could literally not exist and the main story would be fine. I saw a lot of reviews before watching it and I thought it was just people complaining that Bill was gay. Come to find out, they take the time to do a full back story and episode on Bill, someone we end up not needing to know anything about since he doesnt exist in the current time of the story. In the game, they make Bill a character, interacting with Joel and Elle. There was a PURPOSE to him existing in the game. Here, its just to show a romance sequence that literally doesnt matter.

The writers act like they can give us a good second episode and then beat us in the face with pointless interactions for the entire third episode. We have ZERO reason to care about either of these guys since they get introduced at the beginning of episode 3 and die before the end.

Its called bad writing when you could just delete an episode from a show with a story like The Last of Us and it just moves forward like nothing was missing.

I enjoyed Bills character in the game but here, I feel like I was robbed of potential exciting and memorable content that could be taken into episode 4.

Easy solution....KEEP BILL ALIVE, cut the flash back by 5-10 minutes, and show Bill helping Joel and Elle. Let him become more of a hermit and eccentric, like he was in the game. I would be been more than fine with Episode 3 if Bill would have just lived. I could have cared about the person he became because I knew what he went through at the same time he still did what he did originally.

He also writes a letterLoved the show, was actually very conservative and supportive of masculinity....the entire plot was about a guy with lots of guns in his doomsday bunker, who lived on his own until he met someone and fell in love. He also writes a letter where he writes of his longtime love, Frank, “I saved him. Then I protected him. That’s why men like you and me are here. We have a job to do.” (Sounds pretty masculine to me, regardless of sexual persuasion)

Thing is, that if this was a story about hetrosexual gun loving couple....all the people who have rated this episode 0 would be rating it a 10. Conservatives are the biggest snowflakes...they cannot even handle a fictional story about gun loving gays. Everyone who has rated this episode 0 based on the fact that it shows love between two men....is a weak-minded wimp, who would rather spew their toxic hatred towards the LGBT community then simply going about their lives in peace. Seriously – get a life, haters. And grow a pair.

Everybody knows Bill is gay, however, when we are talking about game representation for this episode, it is completely poor. This episode is not for the main target audience.

In the TV show, Bill got shot without no cover at all. That is just an example on how the TV show that made Bill completely different to the video game. Bill is stupid in the TV show.

Bill is suppose to be a man up, a badass and a tactical person but in the show he's the opposite round. Lastly, screw the media for calling most of the true Last of Us fans homophobia. Some of my gay friends didn't even like the episode as well and the character Ellie is part of the LGBT characters lol. It's stupid for accusing most of us homophobic even though we already know the LGBT characters in the Last of Us games.

The third episode was unnecessary and agenda driven. I don't care whose gay or not. You ruined a show I truly look forward to every week, needlessly. Sad.

This episode wasted precious screen time on characters that don’t reappear, making it feel like forced ideology on a TV show. Too bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While not very thrilling, I enjoyed what they did with this chapter vs the game. Instead of an hour long run and gun through a town with only 15 mins of dialogue, they’ve managed to flesh out a once forgettable character into a feature length story. I would’ve enjoyed a little more tragedy but the “kill all your gays” trope died in 2013. Overall a great episode in a historic series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Outstanding episode! This paralel story brought by the writers of the series gives the show a necessary and great different view of the original game story (to which show is very faithful). So well explained and represented. Unfortunately I could see this review bombing happening from the very first moment. People doing that is only guided by hate, so sad. If Frank would have been a woman this would not be happening. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When playing the game, you come across so many story fragments and easter eggs throughout that are never explored in detail. So glad we are getting more than fragments.

This episode is a perfect example of the greatness of this story, Joel and Ellie truly are some of the last of "us". The corpses in the ditch are us. Bill and Frank are us. Tess is us.

I would so be dead if the world was infected, but damn, i hope i would leave a good story behind. *Chefs kiss* Cried like a baby.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Clunky Metacritic decided to eat my review, so once more, briefer: for me, episode 3 is the best one yet in this series, although telling the backstory of Bill and Frank in such an intimate manner came unexpected. But I'm really happy with the care taken, the slow pace. Performance-wise, Pedro Pascal seems to have found his stride, loved the scenes of Joel and Ellie. It strays from the game, intelligently; glad this is not mere action drivel jockeying the ghost of an emotional video game tale. Expand

An incredible emotive story. I've loved it from the beginning to the end. The story es subtle and deep, and really well constructed. The acting is absolutely great. I cried at the end. And no, you don't need to be LGTBI+ to enjoy this chapter.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will keep this review short simply because my other review was removed without any good reason despite it being safe for work. I have 3 main problems with this episode, Rushed character building, Bad pacing, and the relevance to the main plot. Let's start with rushed character building. Bill lets a complete stranger into his house. This part isn't what's unbelievable because the man had no weapons, and Bill probably get's lonely being by himself 24/7. I actually liked the Kitchen scene because it gives us a decent amount of character depth to Bill, seeing him trust other people slowly and seeing how he thinks was good, and a part of the episode I wish stayed consistent. However, the next scene seemingly makes the previous attempt at character building meaningless by making Frank, a complete stranger to Bill start making out with him after they literally just met. There is no way to say that this is anywhere close to realistic, and the show should have spent more time making the romance realistic rather than rushing it in the span of a short amount of time. This leads to me my next issue, which is the relevance towards the actual plot of the main story. If Bill and Frank literally have no other relevance other than just their gay love story, shouldn't we have just skipped to when Joel and Ellie got to their place and them reading the letter. Because that would have saved more time, and would have been more respectful to the audiences time when they find out that the episode they just watched was basically a gay romance film. And I don't even think all of it was completely terrible, but this isn't "The Last of Them" This is "The Last of Us". So honestly, I wasn't looking for them to cut everything from their lives, but come on, their whole life story in the span of one episode when they just die later on? That's pointless, and was quite literally a waste of time to the main plot goal, which is getting Ellie to the fireflies to make a cure. The last thing is pacing. I think that the pacing overall could have been a lot better than it was in this episode. There just wasn't a whole lot happening to begin with. Sure raiders came, but there wasn't any sense of real danger because in the end they both survive it anyways. It just has a failed attempt of building actual tension throughout the episode, something that a show like The Last of Us needs this seeing how it's a, "Drama, Action & Adventure, Suspense, Science Fiction" show. Lastly, I just want to point out that a lot of people that critique this episode are on the belief that it's just propaganda and the liberals are pushing an agenda. And honestly, I think that's bull **** Whether or not they're "pushing an agenda" doesn't mean anything to me. Agenda or not, you should still critique the episode for what it is. And to me it was that the episode overall was pointless, boring, and forgettable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The characters were gay back in 2013. The Last of Us has many gay characters and has always been LGBT friendly. In fact, Ellie is gay. The review bombers aren't actually fans of the games or the series. Just homophobic. If you want to criticize how the episode is different from the story, then do that. This is actually a great piece of cinema, either way, and it doesn't deserve the hate. You might have been "tricked" so to speak, but would prefer to have a boring predictable episode every time? Most TV shows "trick" you by leading you somewhere you weren't expecting to go. And for those who say they're just "side characters" the plot with Bill is very important because that's how they get a vehicle. Even if they did it exactly like the video game, the characters would still be gay, and Bill would still be a major part of the plot. They changed Tess' death scene and there was no outrage over that. Hmmm. Expand
