This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a stand-alone thing, this episode is brilliant. 10/10. But as an episode in a series? It wasn't the wisest choice when you have only 6 more episodes left of the series and there's still so much more to cover even if each episode is an hour to hour-in-a-half long. So as an episode in a series, 6/10. It's a brilliant story with brilliant acting and as a gaybie this made me ugly cry nearly as hard as San Junipero in Black Mirror, but I'm aware that it didn't add anything to the story. Someone could watch this out of context and love it, which means it's a bit of a filler episode made for fans of the game. Nothing wrong with it, but I do think Neil and Craig should have found a way to intertwine Bill and Frank's story through flashbacks throughout the episode that adds to Ellie and Joel's/the show's present plot that wouldn't have taken away from the emotional impact of either storyline. That's my own two cents regarding it, it's not a bad episode and the homophobes can suck my dick. But I hope others can respect opinions like these and recognize that they aren't an attack/reflection on the game or show. Expand

I think, is interesting to know a little bit more about the side characters, and I don't find it particularly bad this Bill and Frank's story, but, it does not help anything about the main story and the character development. I think, the school and the presentation of the new type of infected, the internal jokes and the relationship built between Ellie and Joel during this part of the story, is way better that what was presented to us in HBO's adaptation. Nice story, does not work for the main story. We could not have it, and all would be the same. So, that is why is a 5. The story is so amazing by itself, that you don't have to change it to be a success... please HBO, leave your politics aside, this story is already progressive, you don't have to double down on it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hope this will be the worst episode of season 1.
Why was this episode made, there is literally nothing to the development of the main plot.
Far too much Bill and Frank, whose relationship, nor their manner, has no relevance to Joel and Elie. Especially in view of such a big change from the game, where in the series by Bill and Frank's suicide, we don't meet them at all in the main plot . And it doesn't hold water for me at all, looking at the origin story of Tess herself, whom we didn't actually get in the series, and she was a much more important character both for the audience and for the two main characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you were to take this episode by its self, without any context of the rest of the show, I think it's objectively near perfect. The story it tells is realistic and emotional, the acting is excellent, and might be the best of Nick Offermans career. But who is this episode for? For fans of the game, this episode expands on, and concludes the story for one of the games best characters, Bill, but it also changes the story in a way where the interaction with the main cast of the show is minimalized. It feels less impactful for Joel and Ellie, because Ellie never even met Bill or Frank, and the episode shows that there wasn't really a strong relationship between Bill and Joel. I feel like in this case, it doesn't really strengthen the core material, and doesn't change the story in a more positive manner. If it's for people who haven't played the games, I think this episode may actually be a mistep. The show is already starting to feel rushed as a ~40 hour game story is being condensed into 10 TV episodes. In the first episode we meet and lose Sarah, in the second episode we lose Tess, and the expectation that in this short amount of time we are supposed to emphasize with what Joel is going through is already a huge ask. Now in the 3rd episode we meet and lose Bill and Frank, who are tangential to the story at best. I wish I could give this episode two different ratings, because as a standalone episode it's probably a 10/10 and should win awards. As part of a series though, I feel like it does a pretty poor job of adding to the overall story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look, the story barely progressed and the cover of the show, shows Ellie and Joel. The GAMES show ellie and joel, so why the heck is an hour of run time used up on Bill, who I rather see alive than to waste an hour showing a filler romance. Its just weird that they used this time to push out an agenda, the game does not centralize on gay couple but this episode surely did. Its just plain filler that couldve just been 20 mins of filler and it would still leave an impact. I think this filler was longer than it should have been and could easily been cut down and still continue the story Expand

Too much time focused on this story, it was a good story, but what people generally liked about the series wasn't this and doesn't add anything useful. Also Bill personality was plain better on the game for an apocalypse, even Frank attitude was more realistic than a princess and ponys story like this. Spoiler:
Also, maybe Bill suicided after Frank's dead or maybe not, it was open to -not that romantic interpretation-, and we lose the funny interactions with Ellie just to force a sweet story.

Series started very well, just what the hell happened.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Acting was phenomenal in this episode. Also, very well executed in being sad. However, deviated far too greatly from the game. I don’t mind building backstory on frank and bills relationship but I don’t like how they killed off bill and didn’t add his badass entrance saving Joel and Ellie. I also don’t like how greatly the changed bill and Frank’s relationship. Also, they’re turning Ellie into a psychopath when in the games she is much more caring in ways. Overall, I feel like they could’ve utilized bill better while still adding to frank and making the episode gut wrenching, more action packed, and showing the great dynamic Ellie and bill had in the game. This was a pivotal time in the game building Joel and Ellie’s relationship which was done a little. Lastly, I wanted to see bill take out some more zombies. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett knocked their roles out of the park but I just feel like it was to distant from the main story to get me as invested as I was to the game during the bill section. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When Nick Offerman was revealed to be playing Bill I was very excited to see this episode in particular but honestly it didn’t play out anything like the game possibly for the worse. As an adaptation I think it’s a unique if not contentious direction but ultimately for an otherwise faithful depiction thus far this episode completely derails the series to a near halt.

We pick up with Joel and Ellie serving as this week’s prologue to an otherwise mostly filler, flashback episode introducing doomsday prepper Bill on the days following the outbreak. We follow Bill over the years where he eventually meets Frank and a relationship blooms. There is some great background lore here but otherwise I felt too much time was spent with this relationship. It results in some unnecessary deviation, tons of filler, and a curious omission of some major set pieces by this point of the game in what’s been an otherwise mostly faithful adaptation beat for beat. Joel and Ellie take the backseat almost entirely and Nick Offerman’s Bill is almost intentionally antithetical to the source material’s character. I think up until the very end I expected Bill to survive and things to pick up with Joel and Ellie meeting him all distraught at his survival. I feel disappointed by an otherwise stellar fan cast and robbed of specific interactions between Bill, Joel, and Ellie. Bill’s actual message by this point in the game - protecting people will get you killed is substituted for a more optimistic message serving the narrative “save who you can” that’s beginning to feel a little hamstrung.

I feel as if it was good tv; but this isn't The Last of Us anymore?

Like the whole episode could be built around the relationship of these two characters, because other than a couple of moments where they showcase the survival & horror elements from the game is almost null when it comes to its lenght and depth.

The entire plot of the game in regards to these characters gets blown over, the violence isn't here either...

I was one of the people who understood that the violence in the game served a purpose (whether the creator's wanted it or not) it fit with the whole narrative of the post-apocalyptic world, and it helped in showcasing what character's needed to do to survive.

But here the violence seems completely neglected from the show, as if it came -like Mazin said-, out of a need of keeping the "violence that's necessary" something that I agree with, but such a logic that has also omited a number of elements from the experience that were part of the game.

This hardly could be called an adaptation, is more of a reimagining of the game, I guess if you've never played the game you'll be okay with most changes, given the lack of a frame of reference; but for me, this was a good episode that had little to no focus in the elements that I enjoyed from the game or its world.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another solid episode in my opinion, but really fails to hold up to the first two. Spending the entire episode on Bill and Frank's new made up story was not a great use of screentime. I love how they gave more humanity to Frank's death as comapred to how he died in the game, but cutting out Bill's town, the graveyard zombies, and the bloater fight for this gay showcase was really unnecessary. Three quarters of the way through, it felt as if they were shoving GAY down my throat. Like I get it, they're gay, gay is okay, it's good, it's normal, or whatever ND's agenda is on this topic. But man, why the entire episode? At least the last half or quarter could've been simialr to the game. I just kept waiting like, "Ok now the bloater part comes" or "now we skip to Bill being old and helping Joel and Ellie". Ugh!

I really feel like this was a missed opportunity, possibly sacrificed to push an agenda that ND has seemed to have been pushing since TLOU2 release. It's becoming increasingly apparent now. I just hope this adaptation isn't also ruined by their agenda like part 2 was ruined.

However, negativity aside, I still strongly believe that this adaptation has HUGE potential to become one of the greatest video-game adaptations of all time.

A truly heroic story that shows that through love, love of any kind, that humanity can prevail and overcome any obstacle. Showing we, as a species do more together than apart. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 2 episode was great, but watching this episode I felt the writer got sidetracked.
I think this was an unnecessary change from the source material. They spent at least 30 minutes with showing us the relationship of Bill and Frank and in the end both of them died without meeting Ellie.Joel got the letter from Bill which changed his mind about Ellie. This was the whole reason to show us Bill and Frank's relationship. I think this is simply poor writing, especially because this is a mini-seried, so the format is not great for fillers.I think the episode could have been better with a better editing and and writing.
