Sure but with the crap thats come out lately this didnt need to try that hard to be good. Is rather silly at parts which seems to be in every movie as of late, nothing can be serious for too long for some reason recently it seems.
Not 100% sold on the VAs (DK was straight up horrible); Black thou knocks it out of the park as Bowser. Loved seeing the different powerups we all know and love on the big screen.

Took my father (who got me my first Mario game) and he absolutely loved it. If I had my own kids Id be taking them back to see this again.

8.5 out of 10
Must see in theaters, stay for the credits, and Im looking forward to the next one.

Without a doubt, you will be thrilled. Not a fan of Mario? Well, if you enjoy brightly coloured, well-animated films, you might still enjoy this one because of its excellent animation. The plot might be the only thing that needs improvement; everything else is perfect. Also, I didn't think the screen time was adequate; therefore, I don't see a problem with the film being about two hours long to allow for a more well-developed plot. Everyone who like Mario-related content should definitely try it, and even if you have never heard of him before, I still urge you to do so if you don't have anything else to do. Expand

This was going to be a brutal movie to rate, so I'm just going to say what I like and Don't like and why most critics think this movie is poopy doo doo.

Clearly, this is what the critics think:
The story and its logic are straightforward, predictable and don't make sense in some scenes.
And of course, the length of the film is short, why? Well uh, Nintendo doesn't have any money...Ok, that's a lie, they clearly played safe with this one and didn't want the characters to explore as much as they should and relied purely on nostalgia to lead the wagon.

On to other Things:
Now that all the bads are out of the way, let me say, this animation is beautiful, all the characters are represented excellently, some in more interesting ways, others pretty down to the source.

And yeah that's my review. The movie was short what did you expect it's just a simple bad guy plot and dealing with him in the end.

Maybe they should have renamed it Super Mario Bros: Origin.

8/10, I want MORE. I expect the sequel to deliver a 2hr30 animation after the box office money they made. 1 billion damn, we better get 2 more movies, and pretty long ones of course. It's time for the SMBCU to rise and destroy all animation movies just like Marvel Did with superhero movies.
I'm not even a Mario Fan And I want this to happen.

So I admit I was expecting a little heartwarming plot and whatnot and I was a little disappointed when my predictions did not come true. What I did enjoy, though, is the amazingly spectacular visuals and animation, and it has jokes that did make me laugh. Despite me not "super-loving" the movie, I think it was well-done, and I could tell it would appeal very well to Mario fans, and I'm very happy that is already proven now that it grossed over 400 million worldwide just 6 days after release. :) Expand

visuals and voice acting are great too (peach and bowser especially) and the soundtrack is alright

wouldnt mind it being longer though although you could see it being shorter as a plus

It’s less a film and more of an hour and a half cutscene from a game. And I’m just fine with that. Mario will undoubtably appeal to kids, but it’s real target audience is fans of the series, which it should be first and foremost. I’d call the story more basic than paper thin, as it has been called elsewhere, as it carries enough motivation from all the characters to keep it together and moving; never getting bogged down. Voice acting for the most part is solid aside from Seth Rogen, but Jack Black as Bowser is the real show stealer. Visually, it’s a treat, with a bright color palette that doesn’t overwhelm the senses. The soundtrack is a good blend of original OST mixed with the classic video game music and the hit single by Bowser is a blast. I did find some of the licensed tracks odd, but never fully out of place. Overall, The Super Mario Bros is akin to a restaurant bringing you exactly what you ordered and not insulting you for ordering it. It’s not deep or thought provoking, but it will leave you satisfied as a fan. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is less a Mario movie and more a Peach and Toad movie, the power ups also kinda turn it into a Superman movie which felt odd and for a character who is known for getting kidnapped it's strange that Peach doesn't get kidnapped at any point also when the hell did Luigi learn to move/fight like that being that he spent like 90% of the movie in a cage. It's also a odd choice to have the movie mainly be about Mario unknowingly cucking Bowser
Character wise Mario and Toad are good there wasn't anything i didn't like about them, not saying i loved them there's just nothing i disliked about them even there voices were fine, Luigi was barely in the movie, Peach felt more like Daisy and it was kinda her movie which that lass part is fine but i was just waiting the whole movie for her to pull off her wig and say "it was i Daisy the whole time",even tho i ship Bowser and Peach it just feels weird here with the plot mainly being Bowser getting cucked, DK and related charcters are just a joke and i really didn't care for them there really just there to move the plot with most of them getting kidnapped and DK is just there to fight Mario and to give Mario someone to bounce off of sometimes literally.

I still find Sonic movies better for various reasons but this Mario movies does justice for the franchise and is a great introduction for the next Nintendo movies. The main thing that bothered me was about cramping too much stuff into a fairly short movie. It's too much lore to put into a single movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It isn’t a bad movie. In fact, it was really good. A whole lot of references to the video games. I really liked the part where Mario and Luigi grabbed the star power-up. And the peaches song was just perfection. The only bad things would be that most of the main characters are not played by their original voice actors. They didn’t do that bad of a job, I will say. And Donkey Kong is Cranky Kong’s grandson. Other than the bad things about the movie, it was a true masterpiece. Probably one of the most greatest video game movie adaptations I’ve seen. Expand

Movie doesn't just boast gorgeous and vibrant animation, it features the most fun a kid can probably have in the last several months. For long-time fans of Mario video games (like myself), even more fun might be had for a rock-solid, fun, and fan-service experience that is a bombastic callback to anything Mario. Critics of the film have described the plot as "thin" which I think is an unfair characterization. It doesn't showcase, universal and deeply thematic narrative threads like Pixar sometimes does, but there's fair characterization and strong overall story structure to make everything completely coherent and sensical (for the story's world of course). I think the voice talent did a great job embodying the characters they play and the world's they designed are vibrant and great representations of the world you've come to see and enjoy. From a technical standpoint, the film is completely solid and Illumination has done a wonderful technical job with the aesthetics, animation, and editing. I did find the some moments in the final act to be slightly rushed but it didn't hinder the overall impact of the ending. All in all, I found myself smiling throughout having a good time. Even better, my little daughter who has played Mario Kart and watched me play Super Mario Odyssey had an even better time. I would say this film deserves the financial success and warm audience reception it's receiving since follow-up films and even a Nintendo universe is more than welcome in my eyes. Expand

First off if you’re not familiar with Nintendo the Mario bros franchise this is a generic movie for you but if you a fan 100% worth it. There a so many Easter eggs you need 3 eyes to see all. and I guess even than you miss a lot in the sonic movie you can put speedy Gonzales in sonics position and it the same movie because it has no real connection to the sonic universe but the Mario movie the mario movie is different. if you have played mario Odyssey I think you a ready for the movie this Game is so the the base knowledge but so more you know from the Nintendo universe so more secrets you find I love this movie and I want to see it a second time.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is definitely aimed towards kids, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. As a Mario fan, I thought the movie was very enjoyable. It was packed full of the Nintendo references and nostalgic charm that I hoped it would have. Luigi being the "damsel in distress" was an interesting change but not a bad one at all. The thing I more had issues with was the paper thin plot and pacing issues. The really great things about the movie are the animation and voice acting. Surprisingly, Chris Pratt didn't ruin Mario. I thought his performance was very good. The character with the best voice, however, was definitely Jack Black as Bowser. Jack is a person with a big attitude, and it fits very well for a character like Bowser.

Even with some of the issues it has, I believe all Mario fans, young and old, should go and see this movie because of the nostalgia factor it has. Also, critics suck.

As a gamer veteran with no kids of mine in the movie I really enjoyed it.
The movie manages to address the entire age range of viewers almost evenly.

Story 6/10: The story was probably constructed to show many of the very memorable settings of mario games which worked in my opinion, even the NYC world worked in combination as well. No exceptional story but I would not expect one anyway with the given mario world ingredients (doesn't mean that it isn't possible to create an exceptional story in this world if you wanted).

Visuals: 10/10
Complete immersion in the world. Would have liked to stay somewhat longer.

Political Correctness scale:
The only role that stuck out in that sense was Peaches' role as modern girlpower-version instead of helpless princess to-be-rescued in the game. A bit too overdrawn-badass in my opinion (e.g. with the motocycle instead of a classic go-kart like everybody else).

It is very confusing why this movie got such a bad rating from critic reviews. I asked myself what the critics can possibly expect from such a movie. Obviously something very different from the people that went to watch it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a very enjoyable watch especially as a Super Mario Bros fan. The references were good and subtle but it did heavily rely on them for marketing and getting people who played the OG game when they were younger to go see the movie, however the best part of the movie was definitely the Donkey Kong and Mario Kart stuff I mean for god sake they even used the DK Rap to introduce Donkey Kong (even if they didn't credit the composer) and the whole idea of the literal apes being the ones to invent cars was kind of funny. The only things that disappointed me about the movie were the fact that Luigi was set up as a side character (despite the fact that he could've easily gone on his own mini adventure or have been teamed up with Mario and Peach to stop Bowser) and the final battle being kind of underwhelming. All in all I'd definitely recommend this to any people who grew up on Mario and any Mario fans who want to see it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros-The references are good nostalgia for Mario fans. It defies old stereotypes of princesses having to be rescued. It also shows Mario as a loyal person looking out for his brother,as well as extremely resilient and determined. The voice acting is not too shabby, with Jack black being the mvp in voice acting here. Lumalee is suicidal which is rare to see in films, which intrigued me,standing out as more unique.
Cons- Bowser has a very unhealthy obesession with Princess Peach and sings a song about it. The lyrics make his crush come off very obesessive, making me wince at that as well as the off-key shouting at the end. I'm not a big fan of obesessive love,so i didn't really enjoy this part. The story is not that impressive and could be better, could use more thematic elements

I found myself quite bored for long periods, until the third act when the movie goes completely over the top. It also wasn't nearly as funny as I was expecting; a few laugh out loud moments but mostly meh. Also surprisingly violent; as a punch in the face is a punch in the face whether you're a video game character or not. Overall I'd say this isn't as good as the first Sonic movie, and nowhere near as good as the Lego movie. Expand

It kind of begins...and ends. Where's the middle? Where's the beef? Where's the twist? Where's the character motivation? What IS the Mushroom Kingdom? Why does Peach immediately trust Mario? The answers don't have to be perfect, but we NEED answers in order to stay with a movie. The creators of the movie decided not to go deep on story at all, but instead decide on a bunch of cool sequences and lazily string them together. To their credit, the sequences are all very cool and well done, which is why this movie gets a C+ and not an F. I am optimistic this movie will grow on me with the next viewing, now I fully comprehend what it is and isn't. Expand

The voice acting takes a bit to get used to, the narrative is basic at best and some of the jokes needs to be launched into the sun (Illumination make a movie without any cringe humor in it challenge 2023). With all that said, however, I find myself in the incredibly precarious position of being biased by the subject matter. Given the cinematic history of the character at hand here, all this movie had to do was show just a modicum of respect for things and I probably would've walked out with a smile on my face. Gratefully, there's at least more than a modicum on display. The score alone for this is chock full of enough audio cues to make the avid Mushroom Kingdom visitor's ears prick up at least twice or thrice. Coupled with the stellar animation and some inspired set-piece design throughout, I have to say I was more than entertained. Sure, the fan-service is empty and lazy, but what can I say? I'm compromised here. Here's hoping I can feel less guilty about whatever sequels they make to this. Expand

I was super on the fence about this one for a number of different reasons. For starters, like most others, I had my reservations about Chris Pratt voicing the titular plumber out of fear that he'd sound nothing like the Mario we've all come to know over the years, let alone the fact that he felt like such a random choice for the role. I also had my concerns about how well it would cater to the OG fans that grew up with the series over the past few decades vs. how much it would pander to all the Gen z kids that don't have as near as much knowledge or background on the video games by just throwing in a bunch of irrelevant or silly gags. However, the final result? I have to say that I was most pleasantly surprised for the most part, as this turned out to be not just a fun and entertaining romp for all ages, but it also really paid great respect and tribute to the legacy of Mario and the franchise as a whole! I really wasn't expecting this, but the amount of subtle winks, nods, Easter egg/sound effects and tributes to various games in the franchise were all greatly welcomed and fun to see. As if that wasn't enough, it was so much more hilarious than I could've possibly imagined it being. I quite literally laughed my ass off through most of it! Granted, there were some moments that delved into a little more childish humor for my liking, but it thankfully doesn't go too overboard with it. As for the voice acting, while it was a little difficult for me to wrap my head around Pratt's take on Mario, I did find myself becoming a little more used to it after long enough, although admittedly, he still would've been far from my first choice for the role. Nevertheless, he gets the job and ever so slight Italian accent done adequately enough I suppose. Charlie Day as Luigi on the other hand felt and sounded absolutely perfect, though his character was rather wasted and spent the majority of the film as more of a prisoner/damsel in distress character than even Princess Peach. Speaking of whom, Anya Taylor-Joy's take on Peach felt more capable, confident, and all-around badass as opposed to the prim and proper damsel in distress depiction most of us are likely familiar with for her character, which was a very welcome and refreshing change of pace. Seth Rogen is also a hoot to watch as the voice of Donkey Kong. Last but certainly not least, Jack Black damn near steals the whole movie with his equal parts menacing and hilarious take on Bowser. Anytime he was onscreen, I was just about dying of laughter. Storywise, none of it felt too predictable or formulaic in the slightest and it simply seemed to flow at a frenetic yet always enjoyable pace without ever feeling like too much or an overload. Overall, while Pratt may have not been the perfect choice for Mario in my eyes, and the humor felt only slightly forced towards the children demographic at times, the rest of the voice cast really fit and made the most of their characters quite well. In addition, this was an undeniably enjoyable and satisfying modernization of the classic plumbing duo that pays all the loving homage that the beloved video game franchise deserves while managing to balance it all out and remain a delight for audiences of every age. Now, I'll warnDespite my immense love for the Mario franchise, I went into this film expecting trash. Video games don't translate to cinema. But I found myself halfway through suddenly realizing there weren't any glaringly bad elements yet. Now, I'll warn you up front: if you're wanting a cinematic masterpiece, you're in the wrong place. It never takes itself too seriously, which works, but that being said, it does come across as a bit messy...

What I liked most was the visual and aural elements. It looked great. It's not going to win any Oscars for it, but Illumination did exactly what they needed to do to capture that Mario essence with their own trademark spin. It works, and it works well. The music is excellent. It perfectly utilizes the real Mario themes in a way that isn't tacky. The composer, Brian Tyler, uses Koji Kondo's motifs and melodies in a diegetic manner that feels seamless and gives you a plethora of moments where you go, "Oh wait is that... Oh, it is! It's THAT song." That being said, I was not a fan of their use of real world songs once they arrived in the Mushroom Kingdom. It took me out of it, personally. On the acting, it certainly wasn't flawless, but it was way better than I expected. Chris Pratt, who was my only real concern, did well. He didn't sound like Starlord, and I was worried he might. That's not to say he nailed it though, either. If anything, he's forgettable as Mario, which I might argue he is. Charlie Day was great as Luigi. Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach was phenomenal. And Jack Black nailed Bowser with his own spin. The only voice acting that fell below par for me was Seth Rogen as D.K. It just never worked for me. The backing cast was actually pretty good too. Story and plot-wise, I thought the opening sequence was good and I felt the dynamic between Maro and Luigi was so good that I was disappointed by the fact that we didn't get enough of them together. That and I thought the Mario Kart sequence was very well-done. Probably my favorite part of the movie apart from the platforming scene from the very beginning of the film. I also was very much swayed by the Easter eggs, and there were a LOT. I signed up for Easter eggs and I got them.

And that's about where the praise ends. But honestly, all of that was enough to get me to watch again. That being said, there were some lacking elements. First and foremost, the plot was jarringly messy. Without giving too much away, it jumped through a lot of the "adventure" parts of the story and, while the action sequences were cool, I was hoping for more exploration and scenery. That's where I felt the movie shined was when we could just sit back and take in the Mushroom Kingdom and enjoy our delicious Easter eggs. They had two mid-plot conflicts--one where our heroes are lifted up and another where they are beaten before the climax--and I felt like the former could have been shortened, or you could have done one without the other. But either way, having the Mario Kart scene, a mid-story conflict, a musical number, AND the entire opening sequence all in a movie under two hours just doesn't work. It's too quick getting through things. To be completely honest, I'd have taken the entire middle plot with the jungle out of the story to make room for the exploration adventure that was entirely skipped over. That and the story lacked a clear theme, as it felt only present when Luigi was on screen. I didn't really get what they were going for with the character arcs--if there even were any. It was missing some story elements. And I did not like their interpretations of Peach or Bowser. I didn't hate them, but Peach felt like a bit of a departure from her in-game persona, and Bowser was a bit too funny for our villain. He felt like he was never fully actualized. And lastly, my biggest gripe was that they didn't utilize things that would have been so easy to utilize. They chose to go with some random Toad as the role of Toadsworth instead of actual Toadsworth. And instead of Luigi's Mansion we get a haunted... castle? I don't get it. Those were simple to implement and they chose to invent generic alternatives instead of using what they could have. But I'm also a sucker for Easter eggs...

All in all, this was a decent film. It's not brilliant, but it does what it sets out to do. If you're a Mario fan or your kid is, absolutely watch it! You should go into this film expecting exactly what it is: a fun, colorful adventure with little plot or character development necessary. If you do that, you'll have a good ride. For me, it gets a 6.8/10.

I think he does a good voice for Mario that works for the whole runtime. Likewise, Charlie Day as Luigi is good as well. The first act of the movie with Mario and Luigi together is incredibly enjoyable. The pacing is great and they do a great job illustrating the strong bonds between the brothers. This is also thanks to the great chemistry between Chris and Charlie. In terms of great voice performance, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad is terrific. We have seen in interviews that he does the high pitch voice without just sound editing tricks. His voice as Toad works perfectly for the film while still having the same energy as Toad in the game. He is only outshined by the best voice performance in the whole film, Jack Black as Bowser. Jack Black gives a voice performance that actually sounds different from his normal voice to the point that you won't be able to tell it is him. His voice was perfect as Bowser's as he gave a menacing tone but a slight goofiness to the performance as well. Charles Martinet (the video game Mario voice) is also here and not just as a cameo which I appreciate as well.

Brian Tyler is the music composer for this film and he does a great job. They incorporated a lot of the great music from the Mario games into the film wonderfully. He sometimes does it subtlety and sometimes uses it fully for big moments but it is done tastefully. The visuals are also great and they did a great job of making the world of Mario look alive. This is definitely one of Illumination's best-looking films. There are also some great, enjoyable action sequences such as the obstacle course that reminds you of the classic games, Mario vs Donkey Kong, the Rainbow Road, and the whole final act. These sequences utilize the elements from the game superbly. On that note, there are so many references and easter eggs to not just Mario but Nintendo in general. There are easter eggs in the sounds, the music, the visuals, and the dialogue and it is just a lot of fun spotting it all. There is no doubt that this movie was created with the fans in mind.

However, I do have some issues with this film. The first is the plot splitting up Mario and Luigi. It was great seeing them interact but the movie hints at some issues in their relationship and the movie could've explored their brotherly relationship. Unfortunately, the plot splits them up and changes it to be about Mario rescuing Luigi which is super generic. It's a shame, as the plot didn't need to be about Mario saving anyone as Bowser was already a looming threat anyway. The plot being straightforward isn't a massive problem though. The issue is that there is no proper character exploration or development in this straightforward plot. Every character remains the same from beginning to end, except for one character but they just change because the plot demands it to. It isn't naturally built up or earned. Peach's character is also just perfect with no flaws which is kind of boring. The pacing is also incredibly fast after the first act. The movie doesn't spend any time letting a scene breathe with our characters. It is always on to the next thing almost instantly. This is jarring as I wanted to see more of the adventures with Mario and Peach but this is just dealt with in a quick montage.

In terms of voice performances, I do have issues with some. Anna Taylor Joy is just phoning it in as Peach. She is just speaking in her normal voice and that is fine just because her normal voice suits the character but I wish she put some effort into it. Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong is another performance where they are just speaking in their normal voice. I don't like the casting of Seth and the film doesn't change my mind. On that note, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong is another big miscasting. He doesn't sound old enough or cranky enough as the character. There is also a weird creative choice in having 80s song in the film. There is AC/DC Thunderstruck and Take on Me in the film and it is just very off-putting. These songs didn't work for the scene and I'm not sure why they put the songs in a Mario movie. I also didn't find the jokes laugh out loud funny but kids were laughing so it was maybe that the jokes just aren't funny for adults.

Overall, my biggest worry was The Super Mario Bros movie sucking. Fortunately, this movie does not suck and is actually a very fun movie. I do think the critics were a bit harsh but their criticisms are understandable. The movie plays it very safe with the plot and characters. There is not any meaningful message in this film. Nevertheless, the movie succeeds in delivering a fun Mario adventure that is fun for kids while being enjoyable enough for adults. A kid behind me in my theatre called it the 'best movie ever' so clearly it is doing something right! Hopefully, this movie opens the door for more Mario or Nintendo properties getting their own film adaptions.

Movie” was fun and simple, just as it should be. I have no idea what the deal is with these ridiculous reviews, saying the movie is completely inaccessible for Non-Mario fans, one of the worst Illumination movies ever made and the film is inappropriate for children… Some of these pretentious reviewers need to go eat breakfast or something. I would actually go as far to say that this might be one of Illumination’s better films. Thankfully, there wasn't a lot of Illumination's... "Well, THAT just happened..." brand of humor you frequently see in their films. This movie feels a bit more controlled in that aspect, though that might be Nintendo keeping Illumination in check, so to speak. From beginning to end, it felt like I was watching someone else play a Mario game in the most entertaining way. Lot’s of snappy action and fight scenes with direct/to the point motives. If there is one portion of the movie where they lose major points, it would be some of the music choices. There were A lot of on-the-nose, 80’s music references (I can only assume these were Illumination’s choices) that didn’t really need to be in the movie. But the score itself was AMAZING. A lot of reverbed and re-orchestrated pieces from multiple Mario games that flow naturally and added so much to the spectacle of the film. Some of the voice acting was great, but some of the roles were a bit disappointing and I will now rank the big roles from my favorite to least favorite:

1. Charlie Day: Easily my favorite role of all. He did the whole fraidy-cat thing very well and felt like the spine of the whole movie.

2. Jack Black: This man portrayed Bowser as a simpy little incel and did so flawlessly. He even channeled his Tenacious D stuff, which was great!

3. Anya Taylor-Joy: Amazing as always and her portrayal of Princess Peach as a "Girl Boss" instead of her typical damsel in distress role really made her shine.

4. Keegan-Michael Key: Definitely the happy medium between the good and not so good roles. He was funny enough at times and sounded very refreshing compared to other iterations of Toad that I’ve had to listen to. (See old DIC cartoon series)

5. Chris Pratt: This kinda went as I thought it would. My dude just didn’t really sell it. It's pretty surprising that one of the weakest characters in a Super Mario Bros. Movie is Mario himself.

6. Seth Rogen: Surprisingly low energy as D.K., but he had some funny moments. 7. Fred Armisen: Cranky Kong just didn’t sound all that… Cranky to me.

While “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is mostly a spectacle, it’s a fun spectacle that brings all the fun of playing a Super Mario game to the big screen with no immediate need for a deep plot, save all of that stuff for a “Metroid” or “Zelda” movie. This movie is a good lean into a potential Super Mario Bros. Cinematic Universe. And I REALLY hope that the potential comes to fruition, because I really wana see the Koopalings in a sequel! I always loved them as a group!

THE GOOD: Score, animation, references... all of these will bring you to your childhood memories. A must see in the cinema.

THE BAD: It is pretty simple and it feels way too rushed, could have used a bit more of runtime.

Genuinely, I haven't been satisfied with a video game film like this for a long time. And that's explicitly due to the simplicity of this movie. Illumination wasn't aiming to make some cinematic masterpiece or some glorified commercial, but rather a roller coaster ride that pays tribute to the Super Mario franchise. I was surprised to see the writers do there homework and make references to not just the most popular games in the series like Mario Kart, but also hidden relics like Wrecking Crew, Punch-Out, and even Donkey Kong 64. We now have a cinematic version of the DK Rap! Somehow, miracles do happen. Even the world design feels natural. I've had theories since I was a kid about how Mario and Luigi first made into the Mushroom Kingdom, mainly drawing inspiration from the Super Show, and the execution here feels...wholesome. They establish the more down to earth human world, that includes the brothers' family, and even their plumbing careers. The exposition for all the important details about this universe may be rather brief, but not unfocused. No one is going to mope around for 10 minutes trying to figure out what to do. This adventure runs on a lot of positive energy and fresh comedy to keep the party going. If you were looking for a more deep and manful Mario story, then I suggest you watch the classic Paper Mario trilogy cutscene movies. They'll give a much more richer experience if you feel like the storytelling was lacking. Expand

As i've been playing the Mario game since i was a kid both in my Nintendo DS and 3DS, I got a well enough knowledge of Mario Bros. To actually get the whole reference in terms of the object and the music, and that's one of the things that i really like about the film, i also quite surprise by the music choosing in the film, good animation, like some of the shot especially the video game perspective angle, and of course the one that people have been most talk about is the voice acting, and i thought everybody did a good job on it, there is a couple of parts that are meh but mostly i'm perfectly fine, my problem is more on the story, it is a straight to the point film which mostly if it's happen in other movie i will absolutely love it, the thing is the story in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the most basic story that they could ever told for a movie, it is entertaining and fun but in the most basic way possible, couple of exciting and impressive scene and visual inside the most basic story of Hero vs Villain type of story, the comedy wasn't really work, couple of little giggle but there is also a couple of cheesy moment, overall The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a nice little film, flawed but still a pretty good movie with the most basic story to tell.

Thank God they didn’t.

I appreciate this movie for what it is - a fun film with a lot of clever references to the series it’s adapting. Although the story isn’t so deep. But that’s not what I’m looking for in a Mario movie, of all things.

Overall, I give it a fair 7/10. Watch this movie if you can.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its good just not what was expected, plot at times felt way too easy and predictable for anything to feel impactful. One its issues is when the movie rushes into new teritories without really acknowledging the enviorment properly, like I know its targeted to kids but try to impress the hardcore fanbase of these worlds and its characters that have changed video games for the ages. But the film is really fun I will give it that, even for kids to adults you can still have a great time watching this without knowing too much about the mario franchise. Hopefully in a sequel the run time gets extended to flesh out everything with more creative styled worlds like in this one. Expand

I hated that they got rid of Mario and Luigi’s accents. They don’t sound like they are from Brooklyn at all; instead, they sound like generic actors in Hollywood. It was such a downer. The actors did a fine job; they probably all played Nintendo growing up and were happy to have a part in a real Mario movie. Jack Black was great as Bowser and I really liked Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. The writing can be pretty cringey at times, but not too bad for a kids movie. Don't expect Inside Out or Spirited Away quality writing here. It’s about Sonic and Lego quality.

That is really all the negatives. Even though I hated that they got rid of the Plumber's accents, the movie was so entertaining that it didn't bother me too much by the ending. The movie is very funny. It had me cracking up throughout. The lines this little blue star thing was saying was hilarious. They did great on fusing the different games together. It is like they combined Mario Bros, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros. The cinematography in this movie is really good as well. It feels like a platform game with all the different 2D and 3D camera angles they implement. The music was pretty good, though the song for the Rocky/Creed training montage had me thinking of Shrek 2 the entire time. There are millions of songs, it would probably be good to add stuff people aren't going to associate with one of the most popular animated films of all time.

Unlike the garbage live-action Mario Bros. movie my generation got as kids, this actually feels like Super Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom fighting Bowser, King of the Koopas. For a family film, this is pretty fun and funny. I would like to see a sequel with better writing, more lore and world building, and more character development to keep the characters from becoming one-dimensional. Have it feel less like a generic Hollywood movie and more like a high quality Studio Ghibli or pre-woke Pixar film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Fan Service Done RIGHT!

There are some very minor spoilers ahead, i just want to say that this movie exceeded my expectations! The Critic score should not be taken seriously it's nowhere near a bad nor average movie. There are some things that i didn't like about it but overall i left the theaters with a smile.

The Visuals are probably the best Illumination Studios has ever done, very smooth and gorgeous to look at. The human characters like Mario, Luigi and Peach's faces look different from their videogame counterparts and kind of weird at first but you will get used to them and at least their clothing match but on the other hand the animals and creatures from the Mushroom Kingdom like the Koopas, Donkey Kong and Bowser all look very accurate and detailed.

The Voice Acting, Sorry but Mario does NOT sound like Mario, at all in this movie! I'm not a fan of Chriss Pratt's acting as Mario. Luigi sounds better but not accurate either, Peach is good i guess and Donkey Kong sounds like Seth Rogen...Yay... Bowser however, gets a straight 10/10 Jack Black actually tried to sound like Bowser and he should be cast again as Bowser in future movies. Long time Mario fans will be surprised to know that Charles Martinet is also in the movie, but not as Mario... The character he got to act for is such a waste and not even worth mentioning to be honest.

The Story is not your typical Mario videogame story, it's actually baffling at first how literal they took the Mario "origin" story of him being a New York plumber. The movie starts going in the wrong direction but as the movie goes on it becomes better and better and ultimately it worked in the end. The pacing is very fast there is no real character development except for Luigi and maybe Mario but there's just too many relevant characters and not enough time to flesh them out. At least they all have defined personalities.

Overall, it's not an Amazing movie but definitely a fun and good first outing by Nintendo and Illumination, it's full of Mario references and just good fan service like a Mario movie should be. Here's hoping future Mario movies!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think that this movie could've done better, but I liked a lot of it, first off, I didn't like how they spent pretty much no time at all in Brooklyn, they could've fixed a sewer pipe at a Mets game or something, but after that, I think the world building for the mushroom kingdom was pretty good, And I liked the main toad, although, I thought he didn't get enough screen time, I thought the pacing of it was very fast, which didn't give me really enough time to see the characters develop, but besides that, I thought the ending was very weird, bowser getting put into a jar was a very odd way of defeating him, and I thought maybe their could've been a less strange way, I loved Jack Black in this movie, he really carried this whole movie for me. A nice story, somewhat typical and atypical at the same time.

To those of us who left adolescence behind recently or not so recently, it will surely bring us beautiful memories and at times it will extol our scenes behind the video game with a somewhat dreamy air, bringing it to reality, to family life, to day to day of work and life, with its problems and joys. This mixture between the real thing and the 2d video game is a very big and pleasant plus.

Then we will move on to a fictional world, which will bring with it, in addition to a good load of memories, a large amount of adventure and action. Here, the story leaves the everyday behind and we find ourselves with adventure and more adventure, with little context, since the context is provided by the video game, it is nice to see how the characters, antagonists and main challenges of Donkey Kong and Mario, little by little are fitting into history; With pleasant surprise we see how some characters are given another meaning, an example of this: 'the princess', who little fulfills her role as a damsel in distress to become a strong and valuable character BUT, preserving all her feminine, sweet and pleasant. The main Bad guy is not so typical either, he's a love-struck bad guy and SOMETIMES kind of cute.

The ending also follows the same formula, satisfying, beautiful, with a lot of action, mixing the real world with the video game, yes, all this in a good-natured, calm environment suitable for all audiences, without being childish, however for some reason it is rated PG (with parental guidance) however I think it is more than suitable for all audiences.

Rating
-Idea 8/10
- Story 7/10
- Script 6/10
- Characters 7/10
- Effects 7/10
- Entertaining 8/10

Age PG (For all ages with parental supervision)
