Ignore the critics, this the best video game adaptation I've ever seen. I'm more of a sonic fan, but even I think that this movie is better. My only nitpick is that I wish Luigi more than just being lock up. Other than that, this movie was perfect.

Most of the voice cast is surprisingly solid. Illumination's art style mixes well with the art style of the Mario universe. They also set up a lot of details that could hint towards a potential sequel to further expand this new universe, or they could simply just be minor details for longtime fans to find, either way, they placed them well. The story, while not being very strong, still does what it needs to do to get things rolling, and the overall experience makes up for it Expand

Great fan service, colorful, extraordinary animation and music, this movie gives everything a fan would have wanted from a modern Mario movie.
Critics who are saying the movie is "souless" have clearly never played a mario game, it is not about a deep psichological story, Mario is and has always been a about a simple (and sometimes repetitive) story but with greatly executed gameplay that is fun to play, and Mario movie does exactly the same for the big screen.
The only "bad" thing about this movie is of course Chris Pratt, but hey, nothing can be perfect

It can best be summarized as a hero’s journey for the titular plumber Mario as he finds himself swept into a magical land and separated from his brother, Luigi, in the process. After joining Princess Peach on a mission to protect her kingdom from the clutches of the tyrant, Bowser, Mario’s own quest to rescue and reunite with his brother sees his resolve and fortitude tested time and again. Though the movie doesn’t hold back on slapstick situations that constantly put him on the back foot, his determination to always get back up no matter the odds carries him all the way into the finale; where it ultimately falls to him to save the Mushroom Kingdom. One factor that helps this basic plot to unfold well and feel like a grand adventure is the respect taken to ensure elements are properly set up. For example, the strong bond between the brothers is reinforced several times early in the film both before and during their separation to drive home the point that Mario will never give up on Luigi, no matter how many insults and bruises he has to endure. Another point is that the narrative never drags with needless, indulgent filler for the sake of dropping Easter Eggs not pertinent to the plot. In fact, the multitude of novel references placed into the film are positioned as such to seamlessly accommodate the world building and environment; thereby succeeding in appealing to fans while also expanding upon the experience.

As for the key characters, most were represented exceedingly well. As mentioned previously, Mario’s commitment and loyalty to his younger brother is out at the forefront of his motivations. This, combined with his tenacity to always go another round create a sympathetic main character that everyone wants to cheer for: making his triumphs all the more enjoyable. Likewise, Luigi’s depiction as a timid follower struggling to find his courage lended itself well to the scenario’s he found himself in; setting up an inner conflict that was rewarding to watch unfold. As for Princess Peach, there is a bit more nuance in fully understanding her role. At first glance, her actions early in the film seem to paint her as an overconfident warrior-princess who can be the best at everything she puts her mind to just because the plot needs her to be; though that cursory form of analyses doesn’t hold up for long. Her mildly bitter first encounter with Mario is laced with enough touches of sympathy to allow for a more genuine reflection of her true intentions, and her rigidity overall declines rapidly soon after as she maintains the role of a team player that is not immune to making mistakes. That is all to say, she never outshines Mario. Bowser, on the other hand, comes close to stealing the show due to his equal measures of goofy, romantic inclinations and hair-trigger rage; an iconic juxtaposition he is known well for within the series. Additionally, there is never a point where his feelings for Peach undercut the threat he poses when crossed. This leads to him ultimately being a villain that is both enjoyable and humorous, though also worthy of testing the protagonist’s strength when the time comes to throw down the gauntlet. Lastly, Donkey Kong made for a decent addition overall, though Seth Rogan could have done more to bring his presence to the screen. Compared to the outstanding job Chris Pratt did for Mario, Jack Black did for Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy did for Peach, it left much to be desired.

The quality of the animation and soundtrack was phenomenal from start to finish, and it was evident how much time was taken to properly bring the unique facets of the Mario universe to the silver screen. As an additional point of praise, Illumination withheld placing any of it’s oft-seen Minion’s humor into the film. Though comedy is mostly subjective, and many young audiences enjoy that form of levity, it would have been completely out of place and the film would have likely suffered for it. Instead, the humor feels more in line with how it is handled in the Mario spin-off games, which made the overall presentation feel more authentic.

In summary, the movie best succeeds in its appeal to all applicable audiences. Adults who grew up with the earliest Mario titles will savor and appreciate the nostalgic elements that were carefully woven into the film, while children and other audience members not familiar with the Mario Bros. franchise will still enjoy the experience for what it is.

There is no handCritics that rated this film low obviously never played the Mario games at all. They mixed up their lack of knowledge and understanding of Mario's lore, designs and the like, and simply attribute it to a lack of writing. There is no hand holding folks for non gamers; either you are familiar with all the elements of Mario games or you are not. Also, why do people complain about its simple plot: The original Star Wars has a very straightforward plot. Like the latter, the whole point of the movie is the spectacle and this film has it in spades. This is a perfect rendering of the games, supervised by Shigeru Miyamoto himself, and as close as you can get in getting the 'sensation' and excitement of playing the games. All the casts are well really great, especially Black as Bowser, an inspired casting choice. As of writing, the film will earn above US$200 million dollars in US alone, excluding its overseas numbers. Make up your own mind and watch it. The best film of 2023 so far. Expand

The trailers initially had me excited to see the movie, but the abysmal critic scores brought my expectations down considerably. Pretty soon II went into this movie as a Nintendo fan, but also as a fan of all sorts of different genre film. The trailers initially had me excited to see the movie, but the abysmal critic scores brought my expectations down considerably. Pretty soon I found myself hoping the movie was at the very least watchable, so that maybe we'd get more Nintendo universe films in the future if the movies did well enough to give things another try.

In the end I am glad I read those reviews, not because I ended up agreeing with them, but because they lowered my expectations to a point where my nephew and I left the theater very happy and surprised. I got a lot more out of the movie than I thought I would after reading the negatives, which I do not think has ever happened to me before. After watching the movie myself, I can say that the complaints regarding licensed music, Chris Pratt's mario voice and the Illumination Team's style of childish humor are indeed over-inflated. I kept waiting to find the issues the critics cited, but by the hour-mark, I must have became lost in the world of Nintendo, because the problems never manifested for me. I was ready to painfully cringe after the critic reviews, but spent my 90 minutes laughing, and found myself smiling scene to scene.

So, was the movie perfect? Not by typical film standards no, but as kid and gamer films go, I don't think I've ever been this entertained by a family movie. One gripe, is that I didn't get ENOUGH Mario movie! The film was a little short, and that made the plot move faster than it probably should have. I wanted to savor the worlds Mario traipsed by in montage instead of jumping directly from challenge to challenge. The movie also could have benefitted from some slower scenes for further character development, lore, and dialogue to better establish the desires and relationships of the characters. This becomes noticeable when we finally do end up getting these few moments because they are done exceptionally well! Mario had some solid interactions one-on-one with Luigi and Peach that proved the writers were capable of creating some meaningful dialogue that could really flesh things out. That said, this is a movie for kids, and I can't say for sure that they would really want to sit through those scenes when they may just want to skip to scenes with fireballs and koopa shells flying around. Depends on who you ask I suppose.

So there. I'm happy to say the movie ended up exceeding my expectations. It has me very excited for future projects from Nintendo/Illumination. Princess Peach and Bowser were probably my favorite characters out of the cast, but I enjoyed the work with the exception perhaps of Fred Armison's Cranky Kong, who was the one strange choice for voice work. Despite that, his performance was bearable for the amount of screen-time given to his character.

In closing, this is a movie that is going to make kids and gamers who are fond of Mario smile, and I think that is about all Mr. Miyamoto and Illumination were trying to accomplish. If you don't care for the Mario games or the characters, why are you buying a ticket? It was great. Ignore the critics this time and judge for yourself.

This movie is constantly rolling with some pacing issues here and there. However, the Mario characters were represented very well and the action pack nature of the games comes through very well. The main story arch about two brothers who love each other no matter what is very sweet, and the innocence and optimism they demonstrate over and over comes through as genuine and adorable. The poor reviews i have seen are usually strange mix of "this isnt what I expected" and "who are these characters" Sorry but the movie does a great job at explaining the characters and their motivations, and that is the same extent or much more than you will find in any video game, that probably explains a bit of these reviews imho. The art style was refreshing and actually great. The choice of using Bowser's love for peach instead of just conquest were great and using Jack Black's talents was an exceptional choice. In all if you know Mario, or you don't, this gives you a great summary of whose these characters are. If you do know anything about them this will show the brotherly love between the two that is all too adorable and sweet. You will love the fast pace action that many Mario players know all to well. You will enjoy the Bowser sequence as it gives us some Jack Black talent and some of lighter side of Bowser's motivation. Expand

Why are people so negative these days ? This is a VERY GOOD KIDS/FAMILY film. You don’t have to be a Mario fan. BUT for obvious reasons it’s way better if you are. I watched the 1993 Mario (or when ever it was) and was sooo disappointed. But this is great. I don’t know why Chris Pratt is getting so much hate. It’s like people don’t want to like him because he is now popular, I can’t think of a better cast. The nod to Charles Martinet the original Mario voice as jump man is a great touch. The original voice would have annoyed for a full length movie. I feel like The 1993 film is almost what todays ‘critics’ are angling for but, would be saying things like “where is the fan service”, “a more popular voice and change for Mario’s voice would have been a great move”….. we live in a world where if something is going to be popular let’s rip it apart. But praise some artsy crap film. This is fun. Expand

I can't believe it took this long for such a movie to happen. It was very nostalgic experience. It looked fantastic, I loved the characters, the music, all the references, etc. However, I did have one problem with it" The plot was definitely a simple one and it ended up feeling a little too fast paced for what they wanted to do. If the movie was 30 minutes longer, I might not have had that complaint. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the heck out of it. It's such a charming and energetic film and I had a great time watching it. 9/10

I highly recommend this movie to people who like the Mario series. Maybe the best Illumination production I've ever seen.

This is the main reason I believe that critic scores are typically low for this movie, how movie critics do you expect to have even a surface level understanding of the inner workings of the Super Mario universe? Yeah, not a lot. But even if you don't have said understanding you can still have with the Mario movie if you go in expecting simple fun. Beyond such exterior things, the film's visuals are some of the best in recent memory, with a diverse set of colourful locations and characters. The score is obviously great, being that it's entirety is composed of borrowed themes from the games. Though don't let that make you think this score is unoriginal however, Brian Tyler does an amazing job weaving motifs from the games to create the score. Overall, funny plumber movie good :) Expand

The animation and story is great, and the vast majority of the voice actors are perfect. We all though Chris Pratt would fail us miserably, but he really pulled it together in the end. My only complaint is that it felt rushed, like they wanted it to be 1:30 hours and sacrificed some story elements for that. If it was made 2:00 or even 2:30 it probably would have been better. Also the fact that pop song are used in 4(?) locations instead of better songs written specifically for those scenes is a bit disappointing. Otherwise, an altogether great movie with TONS of Easter Eggs! Expand

Illumination and Nintendo actually did a phenomenal job here. The two basically main characters of the film are Mario and Peach, who are completely transformed from their game counterparts, going from characters whose essentially only personality traits were "heroic" and "kind," respectively, to characters who have surprising depth (It's nothing crazy, but definitely a big improvement). All the other characters were great too, except for Spike. They turned everyone's favorite fictional foreman into just some generic Illumination guy. Truly an L (for "Luigi left your business"). Mario and Luigi's relationship is also adorable. Next, the voice acting. There was a lot of prerelease apprehension for how Chris Pratt would do as Mario, but he actually nailed it. All the other voices are great, as well. Except maybe Cranky. He sounds real weird. Not that they had much to go on from the games, mind. The art style and animation are gorgeous. Musical score is great, with lots (I think the composer said over 100!) of references to famous themes from the games. Lots of other Easter eggs too! The overall plot, while fairly simple, is very well done. One thing I really liked in specific was that Bowser is presented as a real threat this time. The only real problem I have with the movie besides Foreman Spike is that it does move a little quickly in the first half (one thing the critics did get right), but overall the movie is incredible. Sorry if I droned on a bit!

ALSO BOWSER SINGS A FREAKING ROCK BALLAD, THIS MOVIE IS GREAT

9/10 overall (overall? Get it? Because they wear - never mind.)

Sólo se permiten alguna pequeña licencia (que no menciono para no desvelar nada.). Pero, not a big deal.

Nothing unpredictable or groundbreaking, but is highly entertaining. Emphasis on fun just like the games. If you were excited by all the previews you will like this extended cut, no question. I couldn't give it a 10 because I feel some parts were a little overdrawn out & a few jokes were overplayed. There are some clever jokes & creative ideas sprinkled throughout though. Its not full of substance, yet not shallow either. I don't know if this movie ties into the game's canon. If modern DK is DK JR then wouldn't Mario already know present day DK? Or is Jumpman a differant Mario altogether? Baby Mario from Yoshi's Island DS was already familar with Bowser, DK, Peach & so on. Also major plothole near the end with Luigi. No spoilers, but a clear oversight & will be distracting if you are counting all the Cinemasins. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. E-Value: 8
Acting: 8
Plot: 7

After the disastrous live-action 1993’s Super Mario Bros. which led to Nintendo stopped licensing out their IPs to movie studios for movie adaptations for a long time until 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Nintendo have decided to give a second chance to have another Mario movie with this time in an animated movie.

Two Italian-American brothers, Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day), are struggling plumbers in New York trying to start their plumbing business after leaving their employer and much to their father’s disappointment. After a news reported that there is a water leak in the city, the brothers use this opportunity to fix it hoping this will boost their publicity.

When Mario and Luigi go underground to fix the water pipe, they got suck into some kind of a warping pipe where they both get separate and end up in another dimension. Mario land in Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach (Taylor-Joy) while Luigi land in Dark Lands ruled by Bowser (Black). With the help of Princess Peach, they work together and make new allies along the way not only to rescue Luigi but also to stop Bowser from using the recently stolen, Super Star, to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if Princess Peach refuse to marry him.

If you ever think for one second that this movie will be like its live-action counterpart, you are totally wrong. This is movie is so super (pun intended) better. Not only the movie is fun and have many funny moments, this movie is faithful to the source material even with some deviations unlike the live-action movie. The voice acting performed by the cast is great in this movie especially Chris Pratt and Jack Bowser. Although it’s a disappointment that Charles Martinet, who is the original voice of Mario and Luigi in the games, did not voice the characters in the movie, the filmmakers still make an effort to gave him a voice cameo in the movie as a way to pay homage to him. This is something not often seen in other movies.

The animation is very well done and this is what I pretty much expected considering that this is the same animation studios that made Despicable Me franchise. It really looks a lot like their video game counterparts. The plot of the movie is pretty simple and not too convoluted but I think the plot is not nothing unique as this have been seen before many times in another movies. If you have play Mario games before, there are many things from the games are shown in this movie which you may be familiar which kind of makes this movie for fun. The only bad thing about this movie is I felt the ending is rushed right after the big battle to the point that it’s like the filmmakers want to end the movie as soon as possible.

Conclusion, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of the few good video game movie adaptations in the late 2010s and 2020s. Hollywood movie studios should take note on how video game movie adaptations should be done especially if it’s a Japanese IP. This movie really redeems Mario franchise on the big screen. If you are fans of Mario games, this movie is a must watch. There is a mid-credits and post-credits scene especially the latter scene where it tease another familiar character from the franchise for a potential sequel.

I think most people who are big Mario fans will really enjoy it, but if you aren't a Mario fan, nor do you have children, this probably isn't the movie for you. It is a high quality movie full of references and easter eggs, but finding those references and easter eggs is a huge part of the fun of the movie, perhaps too big a portion of the movie. I think everyone involved put in great performances with special mentions to Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black who were both particularly good. I think the movie could have made better use of Jack Black's musical skills though. Bowser does a little bit of music, but not nearly as much as I would have expected for a part played by Jack Black. The story was about what I'd expect from Mario. It wasn't anything particularly special, but good enough to get the job done. The music was really good. The animation was fantastic. All in all, I thought this was a good movie for Mario fans, but not so great for anyone else. Expand

When I was wee I only cared about how exiting and cool the movie looked, and this movie looked great and exiting. I can dismiss the not very interesting story and the basic writing because kids (the target audience) don't care about that. Maybe older viewers might care but not the target audience. Also, this movie has a lot of fan service and references so if that is your thing and you like Mario (and other Nintendo IP's) then this will entertain you. I rate The Super Mario Bros. Movie 8 out of 10 because it succeded at being an action packed Mario movie for kids but was not terribly interesting storywise. Expand

Your mileage may vary, however, when it comes to all of the references. When I saw the film in the cinema, I was pretty much the only person who knew who Foreman Spike was and what the GameCube startup sound was.

Illumination really outdid themselves with this one visually, as the animation is stunning and had no need to look this good! The plot was pretty basic, but for a Mario movie, a deep story isn’t really needed, and it worked out here. I loved the amount of Easter eggs and references to the games, which is a Mario fan’s dream, and the orchestrated sound bits were beautiful. I was happy about most of the characters and their voice actors. I do think Chris Pratt did well with Mario even though he got mixed reception, and Charlie Day was really good as Luigi. The best character though was Bowser, as Jack Black was the perfect casting choice! He absolutely nailed it! The one character that they screwed up with though is Peach. They went too far with making her the "strong female character" to the point where she had no flaws and was kinda mean at times. This also doesn’t make sense because if that was her character, explain to me why she’s been kidnapped 1000 times. The other big flaw this movie has is that it felt a bit too fast paced at times, especially near the end. But overall, this movie was actually good and probably the best video game movie of all time since most of them suck (I’m looking at you 1993 Mario movie), and I think having Miyamoto involved with it really helped. If you are a die hard Mario fan like myself, I would definitely recommend seeing this movie! Expand

The humor can be a bit off (i mean its Ilumination after all) but its still great. My favourite scene was the blue shell scene to be honest. Expand
