This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Now, I'll warnDespite my immense love for the Mario franchise, I went into this film expecting trash. Video games don't translate to cinema. But I found myself halfway through suddenly realizing there weren't any glaringly bad elements yet. Now, I'll warn you up front: if you're wanting a cinematic masterpiece, you're in the wrong place. It never takes itself too seriously, which works, but that being said, it does come across as a bit messy...

What I liked most was the visual and aural elements. It looked great. It's not going to win any Oscars for it, but Illumination did exactly what they needed to do to capture that Mario essence with their own trademark spin. It works, and it works well. The music is excellent. It perfectly utilizes the real Mario themes in a way that isn't tacky. The composer, Brian Tyler, uses Koji Kondo's motifs and melodies in a diegetic manner that feels seamless and gives you a plethora of moments where you go, "Oh wait is that... Oh, it is! It's THAT song." That being said, I was not a fan of their use of real world songs once they arrived in the Mushroom Kingdom. It took me out of it, personally. On the acting, it certainly wasn't flawless, but it was way better than I expected. Chris Pratt, who was my only real concern, did well. He didn't sound like Starlord, and I was worried he might. That's not to say he nailed it though, either. If anything, he's forgettable as Mario, which I might argue he is. Charlie Day was great as Luigi. Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach was phenomenal. And Jack Black nailed Bowser with his own spin. The only voice acting that fell below par for me was Seth Rogen as D.K. It just never worked for me. The backing cast was actually pretty good too. Story and plot-wise, I thought the opening sequence was good and I felt the dynamic between Maro and Luigi was so good that I was disappointed by the fact that we didn't get enough of them together. That and I thought the Mario Kart sequence was very well-done. Probably my favorite part of the movie apart from the platforming scene from the very beginning of the film. I also was very much swayed by the Easter eggs, and there were a LOT. I signed up for Easter eggs and I got them.

And that's about where the praise ends. But honestly, all of that was enough to get me to watch again. That being said, there were some lacking elements. First and foremost, the plot was jarringly messy. Without giving too much away, it jumped through a lot of the "adventure" parts of the story and, while the action sequences were cool, I was hoping for more exploration and scenery. That's where I felt the movie shined was when we could just sit back and take in the Mushroom Kingdom and enjoy our delicious Easter eggs. They had two mid-plot conflicts--one where our heroes are lifted up and another where they are beaten before the climax--and I felt like the former could have been shortened, or you could have done one without the other. But either way, having the Mario Kart scene, a mid-story conflict, a musical number, AND the entire opening sequence all in a movie under two hours just doesn't work. It's too quick getting through things. To be completely honest, I'd have taken the entire middle plot with the jungle out of the story to make room for the exploration adventure that was entirely skipped over. That and the story lacked a clear theme, as it felt only present when Luigi was on screen. I didn't really get what they were going for with the character arcs--if there even were any. It was missing some story elements. And I did not like their interpretations of Peach or Bowser. I didn't hate them, but Peach felt like a bit of a departure from her in-game persona, and Bowser was a bit too funny for our villain. He felt like he was never fully actualized. And lastly, my biggest gripe was that they didn't utilize things that would have been so easy to utilize. They chose to go with some random Toad as the role of Toadsworth instead of actual Toadsworth. And instead of Luigi's Mansion we get a haunted... castle? I don't get it. Those were simple to implement and they chose to invent generic alternatives instead of using what they could have. But I'm also a sucker for Easter eggs...

All in all, this was a decent film. It's not brilliant, but it does what it sets out to do. If you're a Mario fan or your kid is, absolutely watch it! You should go into this film expecting exactly what it is: a fun, colorful adventure with little plot or character development necessary. If you do that, you'll have a good ride. For me, it gets a 6.8/10.

Playing Mario Bros is fun because of its simplicity, even in the difficult levels that managed to drive you crazy, but to say that in its dynamics there was some kind of story to tell with those characters would be a monumental lie.

Having said that, this film plays on a terrain that puts it in a tricky situation if we are going to pay attention to anything beyond the profitable financial business it will become.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a kid's movie. No matter what angle you look at it from. Even if you're 50 or older and love the character.
It's a kid's movie filled with just enough humor and fan-service expectations to appeal to general audiences.

It's true that there are children's movies that work better for all audiences, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn't have that.
It doesn't have that because of its limitations, and that's because it all comes down to something elementary yet 100% crucial.
If you want to go see a movie about something that you can play and that I think you'll be more entertained doing it, what's the point of having something inferior to that experience?

Perhaps the only obstacle to this is that you don't have a Nintendo console. Otherwise, I'd say you'd better look for any Mario game and you'll have a better time.

Popcorn, coke, reclining seats AND two hours of America's favourite plumber? The big kiddo loved the minions when he was younger so for our family this was a must-see. Thought it was a sure shot as I loved mario when I was his age. Unfortunately I was disappointed to see the movie rely on cheap gags (that are not always appropriate for children) instead of the tried and true koopa-stomping action I expected from the nintendo. Not so bad but not worth the price of admission. Time to dig around in the basement and show him what mario is really all about! Expand

The sounds, visuals and fan service were great. But the plot is awful and honestly ruins the movie. I wish they would have just kept the original stories of Peach being kidnapped from the very start and Mario having to go on a grand adventure to save her. They could have used various worlds in lots of cool ways and introduced us to all the characters and villains throughout the movie as he goes through a few worlds. Let’s chill out as fans because we actually deserve so much better then what was given to us. Just because Mario himself was on a big screen and we were given all the proper nostalgic moments doesn’t mean the movie was good. 5/10 movie and the critics were right. The movie is not very good. Great fan service, colorful, extraordinary animation and music, this movie gives everything a fan would have wanted from a modern Mario movie.
Critics who are saying the movie is "souless" have clearly never played a mario game, it is not about a deep psichological story, Mario is and has always been a about a simple (and sometimes repetitive) story but with greatly executed gameplay that is fun to play, and Mario movie does exactly the same for the big screen.
The only "bad" thing about this movie is of course Chris Pratt, but hey, nothing can be perfect

Why are people so negative these days ? This is a VERY GOOD KIDS/FAMILY film. You don’t have to be a Mario fan. BUT for obvious reasons it’s way better if you are. I watched the 1993 Mario (or when ever it was) and was sooo disappointed. But this is great. I don’t know why Chris Pratt is getting so much hate. It’s like people don’t want to like him because he is now popular, I can’t think of a better cast. The nod to Charles Martinet the original Mario voice as jump man is a great touch. The original voice would have annoyed for a full length movie. I feel like The 1993 film is almost what todays ‘critics’ are angling for but, would be saying things like “where is the fan service”, “a more popular voice and change for Mario’s voice would have been a great move”….. we live in a world where if something is going to be popular let’s rip it apart. But praise some artsy crap film. This is fun. Expand

I couldn't give it a 10 because I feel some parts were a little overdrawn out & a few jokes were overplayed. There are some clever jokes & creative ideas sprinkled throughout though. Its not full of substance, yet not shallow either. I don't know if this movie ties into the game's canon. If modern DK is DK JR then wouldn't Mario already know present day DK? Or is Jumpman a differant Mario altogether? Baby Mario from Yoshi's Island DS was already familar with Bowser, DK, Peach & so on. Also major plothole near the end with Luigi. No spoilers, but a clear oversight & will be distracting if you are counting all the Cinemasins. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The movie hits all the right notes with a tremendous amount of fan service that will please longtime fans of the Mario series as well as longtime Nintendo fans in general. I’m sure it will take multiple repeat viewings to find every reference crammed into this film. The Super Mario Bros movie is a very wholesome and family friendly movie about good overcoming evil and finding inner strength to overcome fear. The voice over performances are top notch especially for the mario brothers and bowser. Chris Pratt did a fantastic job trying to balance a voice somewhere between the video games and a brooklyn accent and comes off very fitting and likable. Jack Black likewise did an excellent job not only sounding intimidating as big bad bowser but also funny and comedic.

The film itself is also gorgeous with some of the most colorful and detailed animation. It’s a real treat for the eyes and really brought the mushroom kingdom to life.

I highly recommend this film for anyone looking to see a fun family movie that was clearly made for fans but can be enjoyed by anybody.

This movie is constantly rolling with some pacing issues here and there. However, the Mario characters were represented very well and the action pack nature of the games comes through very well. The main story arch about two brothers who love each other no matter what is very sweet, and the innocence and optimism they demonstrate over and over comes through as genuine and adorable. The poor reviews i have seen are usually strange mix of "this isnt what I expected" and "who are these characters" Sorry but the movie does a great job at explaining the characters and their motivations, and that is the same extent or much more than you will find in any video game, that probably explains a bit of these reviews imho. The art style was refreshing and actually great. The choice of using Bowser's love for peach instead of just conquest were great and using Jack Black's talents was an exceptional choice. In all if you know Mario, or you don't, this gives you a great summary of whose these characters are. If you do know anything about them this will show the brotherly love between the two that is all too adorable and sweet. You will love the fast pace action that many Mario players know all to well. You will enjoy the Bowser sequence as it gives us some Jack Black talent and some of lighter side of Bowser's motivation. Expand

The only person on the cast that does a bad job, is Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, and I wish that Mario and Donkey Kong had a longer rivalry, they became friends too fast. Also, the movie is really fast paced. I wish we got more Mario and Toad interactions. But everything, down to the last detail, is amazing. Expand

Nintendo respects all the fans and they ALWAYS over-deliver and give us a lot more than expected. Critics who're not in this warm Nintendo bath won't understand this at all. With Nintendo, it's not "JUST" this movie, the fun never stops. This month they will also release a new Advance Wars game and next month Zelda and then Pikmin 4 etc. It's a lifestyle. You also need to understand what it feels like to beat a game like Super Mario Odyssey or Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze BEFORE you review this movie.

Nintendo is a special company with genius creators that work their entire life at the same company. Just like they chose MercurySteam as the new creators for Metroid, Illumination is the perfect pick for this movie. Nintendo always recognizes real talent. Illumination is a team that truly understands the fundamentals of animation and rendering. They're now the best in the business.

Expand

Pretty soon II went into this movie as a Nintendo fan, but also as a fan of all sorts of different genre film. The trailers initially had me excited to see the movie, but the abysmal critic scores brought my expectations down considerably. Pretty soon I found myself hoping the movie was at the very least watchable, so that maybe we'd get more Nintendo universe films in the future if the movies did well enough to give things another try.

In the end I am glad I read those reviews, not because I ended up agreeing with them, but because they lowered my expectations to a point where my nephew and I left the theater very happy and surprised. I got a lot more out of the movie than I thought I would after reading the negatives, which I do not think has ever happened to me before. After watching the movie myself, I can say that the complaints regarding licensed music, Chris Pratt's mario voice and the Illumination Team's style of childish humor are indeed over-inflated. I kept waiting to find the issues the critics cited, but by the hour-mark, I must have became lost in the world of Nintendo, because the problems never manifested for me. I was ready to painfully cringe after the critic reviews, but spent my 90 minutes laughing, and found myself smiling scene to scene.

So, was the movie perfect? Not by typical film standards no, but as kid and gamer films go, I don't think I've ever been this entertained by a family movie. One gripe, is that I didn't get ENOUGH Mario movie! The film was a little short, and that made the plot move faster than it probably should have. I wanted to savor the worlds Mario traipsed by in montage instead of jumping directly from challenge to challenge. The movie also could have benefitted from some slower scenes for further character development, lore, and dialogue to better establish the desires and relationships of the characters. This becomes noticeable when we finally do end up getting these few moments because they are done exceptionally well! Mario had some solid interactions one-on-one with Luigi and Peach that proved the writers were capable of creating some meaningful dialogue that could really flesh things out. That said, this is a movie for kids, and I can't say for sure that they would really want to sit through those scenes when they may just want to skip to scenes with fireballs and koopa shells flying around. Depends on who you ask I suppose.

So there. I'm happy to say the movie ended up exceeding my expectations. It has me very excited for future projects from Nintendo/Illumination. Princess Peach and Bowser were probably my favorite characters out of the cast, but I enjoyed the work with the exception perhaps of Fred Armison's Cranky Kong, who was the one strange choice for voice work. Despite that, his performance was bearable for the amount of screen-time given to his character.

In closing, this is a movie that is going to make kids and gamers who are fond of Mario smile, and I think that is about all Mr. Miyamoto and Illumination were trying to accomplish. If you don't care for the Mario games or the characters, why are you buying a ticket? It was great. Ignore the critics this time and judge for yourself.

I really don't get the harsh critics. It's already the best movie of the year.

If you like Super Mario games or well done animation then this movie is for you! I definitely recommend it for all ages that enjoy Nintendo games, Mario, Bowser, DK and all of the Mario Galaxy goodness!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Call me petty all you want, but I despise this movie for what they did to Bowser's character.

According to Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser, it is established that Bowser considers "Destroy Mario" to be too hardcore to order his minions to do. We notice this after Bowletta (disguised as Bowser) tells Captain Goomba to do what he was born to do and "Destroy Mario" which confuses him as it sounds like a bit much. Bowletta tells him to begone and he goes. The Captains are talking about it and say that they already knew. Captain Goomba points out that the way he was talking was definitely strange, not like Bowser at all, because he said to "Destroy Mario" which is too hardcore.

According to Paper Mario: The Origami King, when King Olly says he's gonna use the 1000 crane technique to grant himself the wish of turning all Toads into mere blank pieces of paper (King Olly was basically gonna commit Toad genocide) and Bowser replies to King Olly with "What? That's crazy talk! The Toads can't come back from that, you know? I wouldn't even do that! And I've done some mean stuff, believe me, ask Kamek!" basically setting it more in stone after what was confirmed in Minion Quest, that Bowser, does not, kill!

And what does the movie do? Decides to pee on AlphaDream's grave after they went bankrupt in 2019 of course! (AlphaDream, the creators of Mario & Luigi) although all the games portray the characters the same, AlphaDream set out to reveal the message that the world of Mario really isn't all black and white. There is lots of good to the minions, and Bowser Junior's Journey even said "Good and evil are outdated, simplistic terms, everything is relative!" (Though the Japanese version had Bowser Junior answer if they were evil with "Bowser's army is Bowser's army, the army of me and my dad!" which gives off the same message of "we're not evil, we're just us" but the English version made it more clear) so AlphaDream set out to prove Bowser and his minions are not evil with the side modes in the Mario and Luigi remakes, then went bankrupt in 2019. Fast forward to the Movie, and the MOVIE set out to UNDO WHAT ALPHADREAM REVEALED!

AlphaDream revealed that Bowser treats his minions well (even if some such as Larry Koopa take him literally and do what he says out of fear of being scolded) and although Bowser sometimes lets his anger get the better of him, it's typically when someone else provokes him like Peach deliberately outcasting him during the Blorb pandemic in Bowser's Inside Story, Bowser in the intro of Bowser Junior's Journey almost blew fire on Kamek as a result of Peach outcasting him, or when Iggy made fun of Bowser and talked bad about Bowser Junior by responding to Bowser saying Junior is a good kid by saying "Bahaha! You're joking, right? And people say I'm the crazy one!" or when Starlow boldly told Bowser he has absolutely NO right to visit the blorb meeting without even stopping to ask why and realizing his Goombas were going through the same problem. Despite this, we hear it from Kamek in Bowser Junior's Journey, this is why the minions choose to listen to and take orders from Bowser, as oppose to the Koopalings leaving Junior. (Larry is the only one who would really rather not do as Bowser orders, as he'd rather rest or hang with friends than defeat Mario, but does what Bowser says specifically to avoid being scolded, and the fact of the matter is that it's because Larry is a gullible kid who takes Bowser literally, and Bowser talks tough and acts tough so he can be the "biggest baddest brute around" in the games, but despite this, it seems Larry still sees how Bowser treats him well regardless of not wanting to do as ordered, but taking Bowser literally) Bowser is a good king to his minions to the point Minion Spirit is a thing. Although Bowser isn't always around for Junior, Bowser is an overall good father to Bowser Junior and it's shown through how much Junior wants to be just like him!

But in the Movie, Bowser was HORRIBLY misportrayed, even within the first few seconds of his screentime, first thing he says "Open the gates, or die" adding "or die" was completely unnecessary and out of character for him! Then there was him going on to threaten to kill Luigi or try to kill Mario, or have his minions kill Mario which MINION QUEST ESTABLISHED IS OoC, and then the movie flanderized Bowser's love for Peach (making it way too excessive) as well as flanderized how much of a manchild Bowser is, and mixed it with the writers over vilifying him by having him threaten to kill if he doesn't get his way, and then when he GETS HIS WAY, HE ATTEMPTS TO KILL ANYWAY! And the worst part? He was attempting to kill a whole bunch of people in cages! Because he was "sacrificing them for Peach" when that is bad thing to put in his character, because ORIGAMI KING ESTABLISHED THIS IS OoC! Fueling the toxic Mario fandom is unforgivable and so is misportraying characters I know so well and care so much about!

Don't listen to to critics. This is a Mario movie made for fans young and old alike... This is a Mario movie made for fans young and old alike... It is exactly what it sets out to be, unashamedly nerdy family entertainment for gamers. Expand
