This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty fun, fast-paced plot that gets to the point and plenty of Easter eggs for Mario fan! Jack Black was on form as bowser and I loved that adorably nihilistic Luma. Looking forward to seeing Rosalina in the sequel - it seems set up that way! Expand

It admittedly has a pretty simplistic plot but the story it does give us was pretty good, and it was great to see Donkey Kong use a fire flower - when is this going to be incorporated in the games?

Your mileage may vary, however, when it comes to all of the references. When I saw the film in the cinema, I was pretty much the only person who knew who Foreman Spike was and what the GameCube startup sound was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is less a Mario movie and more a Peach and Toad movie, the power ups also kinda turn it into a Superman movie which felt odd and for a character who is known for getting kidnapped it's strange that Peach doesn't get kidnapped at any point also when the hell did Luigi learn to move/fight like that being that he spent like 90% of the movie in a cage. It's also a odd choice to have the movie mainly be about Mario unknowingly cucking Bowser
Character wise Mario and Toad are good there wasn't anything i didn't like about them, not saying i loved them there's just nothing i disliked about them even there voices were fine, Luigi was barely in the movie, Peach felt more like Daisy and it was kinda her movie which that lass part is fine but i was just waiting the whole movie for her to pull off her wig and say "it was i Daisy the whole time",even tho i ship Bowser and Peach it just feels weird here with the plot mainly being Bowser getting cucked, DK and related charcters are just a joke and i really didn't care for them there really just there to move the plot with most of them getting kidnapped and DK is just there to fight Mario and to give Mario someone to bounce off of sometimes literally.

Movie by Illumination; cliché, fast-paced, obnoxious in the humor department, and inoffensive. The visuals are stellar, with each shot oozing with little easter eggs and detail. Though they knocked it out of the park visually, the story is kinda stuff we've already seen before from other children's movies, but it's not necessarily roll your eyes bad. All the performances are well done, Chris Pratt as Mario isn't as distracting as expected and Charlie Day and Jack Black honestly fit their roles beautifully. The movie does a lot of favors for fans and also has some stuff to offer people who don't do that whole video game stuff and overall, is a decent serviceable movie that will no doubt be a hit with children. The story try to incorporate the game into a real world setting. And it does a pretty good job at it. However it is clearly targeted for children and Nintendo fans. It does help to have played those Mario's games, because there is a lot of reference to them. For an adult, the magic wears off after a while. That said, the visual style is perfect. The voices are fine. Peach facial animation, wasn't very natural for some reason. The music was in the theme. I give it 65%. It can best be summarized as a hero’s journey for the titular plumber Mario as he finds himself swept into a magical land and separated from his brother, Luigi, in the process. After joining Princess Peach on a mission to protect her kingdom from the clutches of the tyrant, Bowser, Mario’s own quest to rescue and reunite with his brother sees his resolve and fortitude tested time and again. Though the movie doesn’t hold back on slapstick situations that constantly put him on the back foot, his determination to always get back up no matter the odds carries him all the way into the finale; where it ultimately falls to him to save the Mushroom Kingdom. One factor that helps this basic plot to unfold well and feel like a grand adventure is the respect taken to ensure elements are properly set up. For example, the strong bond between the brothers is reinforced several times early in the film both before and during their separation to drive home the point that Mario will never give up on Luigi, no matter how many insults and bruises he has to endure. Another point is that the narrative never drags with needless, indulgent filler for the sake of dropping Easter Eggs not pertinent to the plot. In fact, the multitude of novel references placed into the film are positioned as such to seamlessly accommodate the world building and environment; thereby succeeding in appealing to fans while also expanding upon the experience.

As for the key characters, most were represented exceedingly well. As mentioned previously, Mario’s commitment and loyalty to his younger brother is out at the forefront of his motivations. This, combined with his tenacity to always go another round create a sympathetic main character that everyone wants to cheer for: making his triumphs all the more enjoyable. Likewise, Luigi’s depiction as a timid follower struggling to find his courage lended itself well to the scenario’s he found himself in; setting up an inner conflict that was rewarding to watch unfold. As for Princess Peach, there is a bit more nuance in fully understanding her role. At first glance, her actions early in the film seem to paint her as an overconfident warrior-princess who can be the best at everything she puts her mind to just because the plot needs her to be; though that cursory form of analyses doesn’t hold up for long. Her mildly bitter first encounter with Mario is laced with enough touches of sympathy to allow for a more genuine reflection of her true intentions, and her rigidity overall declines rapidly soon after as she maintains the role of a team player that is not immune to making mistakes. That is all to say, she never outshines Mario. Bowser, on the other hand, comes close to stealing the show due to his equal measures of goofy, romantic inclinations and hair-trigger rage; an iconic juxtaposition he is known well for within the series. Additionally, there is never a point where his feelings for Peach undercut the threat he poses when crossed. This leads to him ultimately being a villain that is both enjoyable and humorous, though also worthy of testing the protagonist’s strength when the time comes to throw down the gauntlet. Lastly, Donkey Kong made for a decent addition overall, though Seth Rogan could have done more to bring his presence to the screen. Compared to the outstanding job Chris Pratt did for Mario, Jack Black did for Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy did for Peach, it left much to be desired.

The quality of the animation and soundtrack was phenomenal from start to finish, and it was evident how much time was taken to properly bring the unique facets of the Mario universe to the silver screen. As an additional point of praise, Illumination withheld placing any of it’s oft-seen Minion’s humor into the film. Though comedy is mostly subjective, and many young audiences enjoy that form of levity, it would have been completely out of place and the film would have likely suffered for it. Instead, the humor feels more in line with how it is handled in the Mario spin-off games, which made the overall presentation feel more authentic.

In summary, the movie best succeeds in its appeal to all applicable audiences. Adults who grew up with the earliest Mario titles will savor and appreciate the nostalgic elements that were carefully woven into the film, while children and other audience members not familiar with the Mario Bros. franchise will still enjoy the experience for what it is.

I’d call the story more basic than paper thin, as it has been called elsewhere, as it carries enough motivation from all the characters to keep it together and moving; never getting bogged down. Voice acting for the most part is solid aside from Seth Rogen, but Jack Black as Bowser is the real show stealer. Visually, it’s a treat, with a bright color palette that doesn’t overwhelm the senses. The soundtrack is a good blend of original OST mixed with the classic video game music and the hit single by Bowser is a blast. I did find some of the licensed tracks odd, but never fully out of place. Overall, The Super Mario Bros is akin to a restaurant bringing you exactly what you ordered and not insulting you for ordering it. It’s not deep or thought provoking, but it will leave you satisfied as a fan. Expand

A nice story, somewhat typical and atypical at the same time.

To those of us who left adolescence behind recently or not so recently, it will surely bring us beautiful memories and at times it will extol our scenes behind the video game with a somewhat dreamy air, bringing it to reality, to family life, to day to day of work and life, with its problems and joys. This mixture between the real thing and the 2d video game is a very big and pleasant plus.

Then we will move on to a fictional world, which will bring with it, in addition to a good load of memories, a large amount of adventure and action. Here, the story leaves the everyday behind and we find ourselves with adventure and more adventure, with little context, since the context is provided by the video game, it is nice to see how the characters, antagonists and main challenges of Donkey Kong and Mario, little by little are fitting into history; With pleasant surprise we see how some characters are given another meaning, an example of this: 'the princess', who little fulfills her role as a damsel in distress to become a strong and valuable character BUT, preserving all her feminine, sweet and pleasant. The main Bad guy is not so typical either, he's a love-struck bad guy and SOMETIMES kind of cute.

The ending also follows the same formula, satisfying, beautiful, with a lot of action, mixing the real world with the video game, yes, all this in a good-natured, calm environment suitable for all audiences, without being childish, however for some reason it is rated PG (with parental guidance) however I think it is more than suitable for all audiences.

Rating
-Idea 8/10
- Story 7/10
- Script 6/10
- Characters 7/10

Age PG (For all ages with parental supervision)

Animation is good but story just too bad. This film really for children. Even adults who play Nintendo Mario games, watching this film really gives you no feelings at all. A heartless animated film.

Expand

It is enough for me to call this film an admirable and faithful adaptation to the Nintendo gem with witty slapstick, humor, and tone; only for me to scrutinize the defeat maneuver of Bowser's defeat and maneuver of Brooklyn's save.

(or any other video game), so I can't relate to the graphics and characters, like most of the others in the audience. It follows the titular plumbers (voiced by Chris Pratt & Charlie Day) on an adventure that basically looks like a video game. There's a bit of water works to start, but that gives way to them bouncing thru a variety of objects and obstacles in the Mushroom Kingdom. The plot involves Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) coming up against the evil king Bowser (Jack Black) with the subsequent battles, but it's basically more of the same. Considering the cast, you'd expect some comedy (no real laughs), but this is pretty much a high-energy romp with bright visuals and a lot of cartoon violence. Fans of the game may enjoy seeing it "played" out on the big screen, but as someone who has no relationship to the Brothers, I found it silly and flat. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is definitely not a 10/10 movie as a lot of people seem to be giving it and the people downvoting any review that isn't a 10/10. It seems for these people all the movie had to do was have Mario jump with the Mario jumping sound, hit a coin box with the coin sound and eat a mushroom and they would have given it a 10/10. The plot is as basic as the Mario games, Peach/Luigi gets captured by Bowser and Mario has to save them. That's it, that's the story. There's no character development. In the beginning Mario is portrayed as a failure but he never fails at anything other than the montage. He becomes an expert with every new powerup he receives within a few seconds. Peach is more perfect than Mario, beat the montage level Mario failed at first try, no development. Donkey Kong is just the jealous jerk/bully because Mario beat him.

The worst part is that they got A-lister hollywood actors that don't do voice acting. All the character voices are just the A-listers doing their regular voice. Jack Black with Bowser and Fred Armisen with Cranky Kong being the few exceptions. Seth Rogen did a huge disservice to Donkey Kong, basically just using his regular voice and laugh which is really distinct. Being a Nintendo fan that has been playing since the original playing Mario and Donkey Kong on everything from the Nintendo to gameboy to 3ds to Gamecube to the switch, characters that were given distinct and unique voices that matched their characters had hollow voice performances by actors like Seth Rogen that were just using their regular voice was very very disappointing.

This movie is just an average movie that leans heavily on the success and global recognition of Mario from the video games. Nintendo phoned this one in, of course their loyal fanbase will defend it to their dying breath with 10/10 reviews and rake in cash from the global recognition of the characters from Nintendo's video games.

It's cool Nintendo is doing movies, seems like it is something they should have done, even though their games basically have no story. Would love a Zelda movie, hopefully one that isn't just cookie cutter like this one filled with things like Link breaking pots.

The highlights were hearing Koji Kondo's themes, though they lasted mere seconds and were trodden down by Brian Tyler's uninspired trailer music and random forced pop music.

The story and characters seemed to be written by people who didn't play the games and were hoping throwing fanservice in would make a lot of easy money. They weren't wrong, but I hope that the next film gets better writers and more fitting English voice actors like Jack Black was for Bowser.

Pero, not a big deal.

It was decent at some points but, for the most part I was rolling my eyes. It was cool being able to identify the games they referenced and so on but, their explanation for not having Italian voice actors was stupid. Mario went from navigating the hustle and bustle of New York hopping through loops like a pro, to then getting completely annihilated by a course. He was then upstaged by the usual "damsel in distress," which literally made me furious. At what point in the games is Peach the actual star? It's always Mario, he is saving Peach, she's always locked away in Bowsers' castle. In a Hollyworld that wants to push woke agendas, here we go again! As I was walking out of the theater a woman asks her husband, who exactly are the characters and their purpose and the man says, "It's Mario, Donkey Kong and Luigi, what more do you need to know?" That summarized the viewing audience for me, children and adults who literally know the IP's but, nothing of their adventures. The movie will sell well because kids will digest anything with pretty colors and stupid dialogue and parents will just go along with it. As a die hard Mario fan I left completely disappointed. The entire time, I just wanted to go home and play the video games instead. Also, I hate Illuminations animation style, the way they render eyes freaks me out and Peach didn't even put her hair in a ponytail when she consumed the fire flower. Don't get me started on how they literally bent Bowser over and just...well you know. For those saying the "fans" are over-hyping this, I once again am a die-hard fan, with extensive knowledge of the lore and I do not support this film at all. The "fans" are just a bunch of people who played Mario Kart 7 & 8 or, Mario Party 8, 9, 10 (Not the good ones.) In the words of the King, I say to this movie; BOOO!!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Parabens, voces superaram toda a Pixar (Disney) e a Dreamworks.
Não gostei de musicas famosas no filme, (AC/DC Take on Me) odiei.
The Super Mario Bros movie 10/10.

I think that this movie could've done better, but I liked a lot of it, first off, I didn't like how they spent pretty much no time at all in Brooklyn, they could've fixed a sewer pipe at a Mets game or something, but after that, I think the world building for the mushroom kingdom was pretty good, And I liked the main toad, although, I thought he didn't get enough screen time, I thought the pacing of it was very fast, which didn't give me really enough time to see the characters develop, but besides that, I thought the ending was very weird, bowser getting put into a jar was a very odd way of defeating him, and I thought maybe their could've been a less strange way, I loved Jack Black in this movie, he really carried this whole movie for me. So I liked it, but I just thought it was kinda off, It wasn't as good as puss in boots, but I think it can be compared to puss in boots as a good 2nd place. Expand

As a gamer veteran with no kids of mine in the movie I really enjoyed it.
The movie manages to address the entire age range of viewers almost evenly.

Story 6/10: The story was probably constructed to show many of the very memorable settings of mario games which worked in my opinion, even the NYC world worked in combination as well. No exceptional story but I would not expect one anyway with the given mario world ingredients (doesn't mean that it isn't possible to create an exceptional story in this world if you wanted).

Visuals: 10/10
Complete immersion in the world. Would have liked to stay somewhat longer.

Political Correctness scale:
The only role that stuck out in that sense was Peaches' role as modern girlpower-version instead of helpless princess to-be-rescued in the game. A bit too overdrawn-badass in my opinion (e.g. with the motocycle instead of a classic go-kart like everybody else).

It is very confusing why this movie got such a bad rating from critic reviews. I asked myself what the critics can possibly expect from such a movie. Obviously something very different from the people that went to watch it.
