The Mario Movie is a blast to watch from start to finish. Nintendo has put their heart and soul into the Mario series, and this movie is simply a love letter to Nintendo and Mario fans across the globe. While someone who is not a big fan ofThe Mario Movie is a blast to watch from start to finish. Nintendo has put their heart and soul into the Mario series, and this movie is simply a love letter to Nintendo and Mario fans across the globe. While someone who is not a big fan of the Mario series will not get a big chunk of the references, a true Mario fanatic (such as myself), well get them. From the Giant Eels from Super Mario 64, to the Sand Kingdom from Odyssey, and even the DK Rap, this movie is filled to the brim with sneaky Mario references. The story, while somewhat simple, works well for Mario, as the storyline of most Mario games is somewhat simple. While Chris Pratt was not the best choice, he did a serviceable job as our red plumber. Charlie Day, Seth Rogan, and Jack Black steal the show here with their performances as Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser respectfully. The finale of the movie is amazing, and the music is stellar. Like people said, "This movie is not for reviewers, its for the players."… Expand

I went in to this movie thinking it would be at least average to decent, and I ended up being blown away. Definitely not a critic's movie, but that's not who this was for anyway. As a lifelong Nintendo gamer that's played basically everyI went in to this movie thinking it would be at least average to decent, and I ended up being blown away. Definitely not a critic's movie, but that's not who this was for anyway. As a lifelong Nintendo gamer that's played basically every Mario game, I enjoyed the unique presentation of the characters, the great animation quality, the medley of classic Mario music, and most of all the countless references both obvious and obscure that are crammed into every scene. It reminded me of why I enjoy Nintendo games; and specifically, the Super Mario series. Illumination and Nintendo somehow managed to catch the magic of the games with this film, and I had a blast watching it (so much so that I saw it twice!).
My main criticism was the non-Mario music that felt out of place at times, the pacing was a bit off, and the post credits scene could probably have been more than just a few seconds of teaser. But these were harmless non-issues for me that didn't detract from the overall experience. 9/10, but I'm marking 10/10 just to help further contrast the User Score with the Critic Review aggregate. There is obvious love and care that went into this film, and it's being rewarded with tremendous financial success. Any movie that can you make smile ear to ear for its duration deserves as much.… Expand

As a long-time-fan of anything Mario, I greatly enjoyed everything I saw. Even the little cringy parts.
This doesn't really deserve a 10/10 but for the sake of underlining how amazing this movie is in comparison to everything else these days, I'll gladly give it just that.

Watch it if you love Mario - or are sick and tired of Hollywoke and just want to be entertained. This movie entertains, nothing more, just how it should be.… Expand

The animation in the movie is stunning, and the Illumination studio excels in bringing the iconic Super Mario characters to life. The voice cast is equally impressive, with each actor perfectly embodying their respective characters.

There were zillion game references and a very well realize Mario Bros world to enjoy.

Not as powerful as the Puss in Boots film or The Incredibles, but still worth watching 9/10 for me.

I was honestly disappointed after watching this. It did not spend nearly enough time in the world of Mario and spent too much time explaining the characters' origins to be entertaining. Definitely seemed like a setup for a sequel.

To start, I'll say that if you haven't played a Mario game, you won't get much out of this film. Yeah, not a lot. But even if you don't have said understanding you can still have with the Mario movie if you go in expecting simple fun. Beyond such exterior things, the film's visuals are some of the best in recent memory, with a diverse set of colourful locations and characters. The score is obviously great, being that it's entirety is composed of borrowed themes from the games. Though don't let that make you think this score is unoriginal however, Brian Tyler does an amazing job weaving motifs from the games to create the score. Overall, funny plumber movie good :)… Expand

The Super Mario Bros Movie is a tolerable action-comedy film with a lot of action and spectacle, but leaves a lot to be desired in terms of its world-building, characterization and pacing. It's a loosely-plotted sugar rush with greatThe Super Mario Bros Movie is a tolerable action-comedy film with a lot of action and spectacle, but leaves a lot to be desired in terms of its world-building, characterization and pacing. It's a loosely-plotted sugar rush with great animation and a serviceable voice cast and soundtrack. As a "movie" though, it feels more like a 92 minute commercial for the games than a genuine movie. The movie has pacing issues to where it goes by too quickly. The movie goes from one set piece to another in quick and rapid progression. It hardly slows down to give the viewer a chance to breathe and process the events of the plot, the locations and the characters. There are some heartfelt moments here and there, but they're very brief and also insignificant overall because the movie itself forgets them altogether. The characters just aren't fleshed out well enough to make me even care much about them.

I would've liked to see more detail on Peach's backstory and how it affects her emotionally, why Bowser is so fixated on marrying Peach and conquering the world, how Mario and Luigi's family reacted to them being gone for so long, more interactions between Mario and Luigi, more interactions between Mario and Peach, more interactions between Mario and Toad, more screen time for events in Brooklyn, etc... The lackluster world-building is especially a problem to me because of how it incorporates many elements (floating bricks, floating platforms, warp pipes and power-ups) from the games into the movie at the expense of their logic not being explained well enough for non-Mario fans. A non-Mario fan would typically have so many questions about how things work in the Mushroom Kingdom, but the movie leaves so much unexplained and just expects you to tolerate it. The movie can be too faithful to the games at times.

By being too faithful, I mean its emphasis on references and easter eggs for the sake of them being there without much logic or reason to the point of it alienating the casual audience. This movie pulls no punches in bombarding you with references to the video games to where it has no grasp on subtlety. As a Mario fan, it may be somewhat fun pointing out those references and easter eggs, but when I'm more focused on the writing, plot and characterization, it's a very bland and unimaginative experience for a hero's journey film.

All-in-all, the movie is just average to me. It's not a bad movie, but it's far from good and leaves a lot to be desired in terms of its writing, characterization and world-building. This movie is a perfect example for why video game movie adaptations need to do a lot more than simply incorporating elements from the source material. As a movie, it needs to have a substantive plot to it, along with good characterization and themes, so I can feel emotionally invested in it overall. I don't care that it's "about Mario" or that it's "for kids", even though it's clearly geared towards Mario fans of all ages and there are much better written films than the Mario Movie like the LEGO movie, Angry Birds movie, and of course, the Sonic movies. Nintendo played it too safe with this movie and focused so much on fan service, references and easter eggs while refusing to actually make a movie that's accessible to the general audience. That's a major failure for the movie overall and makes it come off as soulless and corporate, since as I previously stated, the movie really is more of a 92 minute commercial for the video games and the brand than a genuine movie. Pretty funny, many elements from many Mario’s games. I enjoyed the whole movie. I don’t know what low rating people were expecting. It’s Mario!!! I give it a 10, because I was laughing so hard in many parts of the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is definitely aimed towards kids, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. As a Mario fan, I thought the movie was very enjoyable. It was packed full of the Nintendo references and nostalgic charm that I hoped it would have. Luigi being the "damsel in distress" was an interesting change but not a bad one at all. The thing I more had issues with was the paper thin plot and pacing issues. The really great things about the movie are the animation and voice acting. Surprisingly, Chris Pratt didn't ruin Mario. I thought his performance was very good. The character with the best voice, however, was definitely Jack Black as Bowser. Jack is a person with a big attitude, and it fits very well for a character like Bowser.

Even with some of the issues it has, I believe all Mario fans, young and old, should go and see this movie because of the nostalgia factor it has. Also, critics suck.… Expand

This is still Super Mario, an entertainment film for the whole family. And what should I say ? It's everything I wanted. I also thought at first that it couldn't work, but yes, it works. Nostalgia, Easter Eggs, humor, and music. All great. Perhaps one could criticize the voice actors (German) and 1-2 mistakes in the story structure/contradictions, so 1 point deduction. But otherwise a very good entertaining nostalgic film.

Based off the long-running classic Nintendo game series that most of us all know and love, Super Mario gets the 3D computer-animated treatment at long last in this vibrant and colorful film that follows him and his brother Luigi, a pair ofBased off the long-running classic Nintendo game series that most of us all know and love, Super Mario gets the 3D computer-animated treatment at long last in this vibrant and colorful film that follows him and his brother Luigi, a pair of plumbers living in Brooklyn, New York who find themselves transported to the Mushroom Kingdom and must band together with Princess Peach to stop Bowser from trying to marry her, lest he conquers the whole kingdom. I was super on the fence about this one for a number of different reasons. For starters, like most others, I had my reservations about Chris Pratt voicing the titular plumber out of fear that he'd sound nothing like the Mario we've all come to know over the years, let alone the fact that he felt like such a random choice for the role. I also had my concerns about how well it would cater to the OG fans that grew up with the series over the past few decades vs. how much it would pander to all the Gen z kids that don't have as near as much knowledge or background on the video games by just throwing in a bunch of irrelevant or silly gags. However, the final result? I have to say that I was most pleasantly surprised for the most part, as this turned out to be not just a fun and entertaining romp for all ages, but it also really paid great respect and tribute to the legacy of Mario and the franchise as a whole! I really wasn't expecting this, but the amount of subtle winks, nods, Easter egg/sound effects and tributes to various games in the franchise were all greatly welcomed and fun to see. As if that wasn't enough, it was so much more hilarious than I could've possibly imagined it being. I quite literally laughed my ass off through most of it! Granted, there were some moments that delved into a little more childish humor for my liking, but it thankfully doesn't go too overboard with it. As for the voice acting, while it was a little difficult for me to wrap my head around Pratt's take on Mario, I did find myself becoming a little more used to it after long enough, although admittedly, he still would've been far from my first choice for the role. Nevertheless, he gets the job and ever so slight Italian accent done adequately enough I suppose. Charlie Day as Luigi on the other hand felt and sounded absolutely perfect, though his character was rather wasted and spent the majority of the film as more of a prisoner/damsel in distress character than even Princess Peach. Speaking of whom, Anya Taylor-Joy's take on Peach felt more capable, confident, and all-around badass as opposed to the prim and proper damsel in distress depiction most of us are likely familiar with for her character, which was a very welcome and refreshing change of pace. Seth Rogen is also a hoot to watch as the voice of Donkey Kong. Last but certainly not least, Jack Black damn near steals the whole movie with his equal parts menacing and hilarious take on Bowser. Anytime he was onscreen, I was just about dying of laughter. Storywise, none of it felt too predictable or formulaic in the slightest and it simply seemed to flow at a frenetic yet always enjoyable pace without ever feeling like too much or an overload. Overall, while Pratt may have not been the perfect choice for Mario in my eyes, and the humor felt only slightly forced towards the children demographic at times, the rest of the voice cast really fit and made the most of their characters quite well. In addition, this was an undeniably enjoyable and satisfying modernization of the classic plumbing duo that pays all the loving homage that the beloved video game franchise deserves while managing to balance it all out and remain a delight for audiences of every age.… Expand

For long-time fans of Mario video games (like myself), even more fun might be had for a rock-solid, fun, and fan-service experience that is a bombastic callback to anything Mario. Critics of the film have described the plot as "thin" which I think is an unfair characterization. It doesn't showcase, universal and deeply thematic narrative threads like Pixar sometimes does, but there's fair characterization and strong overall story structure to make everything completely coherent and sensical (for the story's world of course). I think the voice talent did a great job embodying the characters they play and the world's they designed are vibrant and great representations of the world you've come to see and enjoy. From a technical standpoint, the film is completely solid and Illumination has done a wonderful technical job with the aesthetics, animation, and editing. I did find the some moments in the final act to be slightly rushed but it didn't hinder the overall impact of the ending. All in all, I found myself smiling throughout having a good time. Even better, my little daughter who has played Mario Kart and watched me play Super Mario Odyssey had an even better time. I would say this film deserves the financial success and warm audience reception it's receiving since follow-up films and even a Nintendo universe is more than welcome in my eyes.… Expand

I have been excited to go see a movie in theaters in a very long time. When I heard they were making a Mario movie I had hope that Nintendo wouldn't let it be overrun with leftist Hollywood politics and just make a fun movie but, I wasI have been excited to go see a movie in theaters in a very long time. When I heard they were making a Mario movie I had hope that Nintendo wouldn't let it be overrun with leftist Hollywood politics and just make a fun movie but, I was skeptical due to flood of woke movies and TV shows that have been crammed down our throats in the last few years. After watching the Mario movie I can safely say that Nintendo and Illumination delivered! This movie was pure fun, just like a movie targeted for kids should be. With that said, Mario isn't just for kids, there are so many references in this movie to classic games that only adult gamers would really pick up on and appreciate. I'm so glad that I was able to take my kids to this movie and share the love I have for Mario with them without having to be lectured about CRT, racism, grooming, trans kids, etc. Mario is what a family movie is supposed to be, just a fun escape from reality and a great time for the whole family.

The animation is top tier, probably the best I have ever seen in a movie like this, yes I would put it over pixar any day of the week. Illumination really worked hard on this level of animation and it shows. I remember being in awe as a child watching Toy Story for the first time and this was reminiscent of that. There were plenty of songs taken from several Mario games that just fit with the Movie so well. All the easter eggs to other Nintendo games made me smile each time I caught a glimpse. I loved the nods to Luigi's Mansion in particular.

As far as negatives go, there really isn't much to complain about. If anything, I wanted more time in the mushroom kingdom and less time devoted to Brooklyn but, overall, its nothing to dock points on. I thought Chris Pratt was great as Mario, the accent was well balanced and not to overbearing. Jack Black knocked it out of the park as Bowser, Charlie Day was fantastic as Luigi, and Anya Taylor Joy was great as Peach. Cranky Kong's voice was a little weird to me. Seth Rogen was really distracting as Donkey Kong because he didn't even try to sound like something other than himself. Having his weird laugh left in the movie was cringey. Overall, if you are on the fence about going to see the Mario movie because of critic reviews, go ahead and give it a watch for yourself. It's worth it. I loved this movie and I can't wait to see what they do with next one and what this movie's success might mean for more Nintendo franchises to come.… Expand

Parents, kids and gamers are marveled until the end !

As a Mario gamers since 1993 my mind blows with the hundreds Easter egg about Nintendo universe (cameos, actions, dialogue between characters, music, sounds FX…) they are everywhere ! And to finish, I’ve been lucky to watch the movie in French and PIERRE TESSIER sounds perfectly like Mario video games ! Every actors are perfect !

It’s as great as it’s going to get as far as a nostalgic experience. I’m 38, and I enjoyed it for what it was, a joyous romp through a world I discovered in my adolescence and played everyday with my father.
