It is a good movie, it respected what the mario franchise was, but it is just predictable and a little boring.

I know Illumination does not make good movies,(possibly the reason why critics do not like the movie) but for me, this isIt is a good movie, it respected what the mario franchise was, but it is just predictable and a little boring.

I know Illumination does not make good movies,(possibly the reason why critics do not like the movie) but for me, this is Illumination's 2nd best and Nintendo's best movie.

Look, I'm not trying to say this is a great movie. In fact, academically speaking, it's very much a mixed bag. The voice acting takes a bit to get used to, the narrative is basic at best and some of the jokes needs to be launched into the sunLook, I'm not trying to say this is a great movie. In fact, academically speaking, it's very much a mixed bag. The voice acting takes a bit to get used to, the narrative is basic at best and some of the jokes needs to be launched into the sun (Illumination make a movie without any cringe humor in it challenge 2023). With all that said, however, I find myself in the incredibly precarious position of being biased by the subject matter. Given the cinematic history of the character at hand here, all this movie had to do was show just a modicum of respect for things and I probably would've walked out with a smile on my face. Gratefully, there's at least more than a modicum on display. The score alone for this is chock full of enough audio cues to make the avid Mushroom Kingdom visitor's ears prick up at least twice or thrice. Coupled with the stellar animation and some inspired set-piece design throughout, I have to say I was more than entertained. Sure, the fan-service is empty and lazy, but what can I say? I'm compromised here. Here's hoping I can feel less guilty about whatever sequels they make to this.… Expand

After a second viewing, I enjoyed this movie so much more. I guess my body can't handle staying up for the midnight previews anymore. As a normal movie, this barely a 6/10. But as a MARIO movie this is definitely a 8/10. Then why did i put 9/10?

First of all, this movie is the definition of fun. The characters, details and the music are really good.
The story is bare-bones, but that's expected from a mario film. I mean, i love a deep story, but for a mario game i think its ok to have a simple, relaxing story.
If you are a mario/nintendo fan, you will be always smiling watching this film. It is FULL of easter eggs that every nintendo fan will appreciate.
I give this movie a 9/10 and not an 8/10 because i can tell nintendo put love into this movie.
If you are not a Nintendo fan, like the critics, you will definitely not like this movie and only see the bad aspects like the story and how it's so fast paced. But as a mario fan, this feels like a fun game, and a love letter to nintendo fans.

It's fine. The voice acting didn't end up nearly as bad as everyone had feared. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad. Most of the characters are ho-hum except Peach and Bowser, who steal the show and have the only really interesting parts.

I wasn't upset that I watched this movie, but I have no interest in seeing a sequel. Don't see this in the theater, wait for it to stream. It really probably should have just been a straight streaming release. There's nothing in this movie that makes it worth the big screen.… Expand

This is such a great movie! I saw it earlier in the theaters today, and it was better than I thought, I would totally recommend this movie to people. And BTW, Hollywood critics are dumb for their rating of this movie.

The attempt to squish any sort of true depth into 90-ish minutes was doomed from the start, which left me pretty dissatisfied on that note. The ending, in particular, felt egregiously abrupt.

Overall, this is a slightly above-par Illumination movie that relies heavily on nostalgia in an attempt to appeal to adults, while presenting many elements that would likely enthral younger audiences. The lack of too many moments that felt like corporate attempts at pandering was a relief, but the lack of anything that bore true emotional weight is lamentable.… Expand

It is not perfect by any means, but it rewarded my inner child that had been yearning for a good mario movie. The movie gave me goosebumps and gave every character a perdonality I feel fits them perfectly.

Nintendos second try at an adaptation of one of their beloved game series, (Well at least up until super mario bros Wii, the series went a bit down hill from then) and is it good (unlike the original 1996 adaptation which was abysmal)? Hell yeah. Nobody cares what the critics have to say as they're notorious for their sh*tty reviews.
The animation is probably the best to come out of illumination, the amount of Easter eggs (such as anti-gravity from Mario kart 8 and rainbow road, music Easter eggs such as the music from the gusty garden galaxy in super mario galaxy and the secret levels in the 3D mario games and tons more, heck the cat suit even made an appearance!) in it was incredible and the story itself was a masterpiece. It's so good that they didn't go the safe ruit and just do the usual Princess Peach gets kidnapped by bowser and Mario goes to save her, as that plot line is unfortunately overused in the Mario series and the film probably would have been bad if they did go with that kinda plot. This film was very funny and Chris Pratt did a great job voicing Mario. It's certainly better than the first Sonic the hedgehog movie, but in my opinion, it's not as good as Sonic the hedgehog 2.
Fantastic film, can't wait for what in store for the future.… Expand

I was really worried that this was going to be a bad movie when it was first announced. A lot of the marketing did little to dissuade me from this outlook. I genuinely laughed at the jokes throughout the whole thing and I think they did the characters justice. Plenty of people were worried about characterization of Peach but I can say she is one of the best characters and comes off as competent and strong but also kind, caring, and helpful which is what is usually missing from all modern versions of the "strong female character". If you love the Mario franchise then this movie is a great rendition of the characters and the world they inhabit.… Expand

This is definitely NOT a generic hollywood spin-off, no matter what you might see people say. It gives us much more story than any of the games, and it surprises me how natural it was to see the characters fully voiced; I legitimately think this movie could be a standalone entry in the Mario series. Illumination Paris also did an incredible job animating it, and it's graphics are top-notch. The critics, as usual, are completely disconnected and really don't know what they're talking about. Look at the user score, and no, it's not just people who like Mario or who are being nostalgic. This is the best animated film of the last few years.… Expand

seeing these characters i grew up with, regardless of their lack of any deepness, forced to fit into the most generic children's hollywood archetypes hurts my feelings and eyes in a very low way

It's mediocre when compared to what it could've been. I feel like more characters could appear, or have more major roles (Yoshi, Koopalings, Daisy, King Boo, King Bob-Omb, etc), and I felt whelmed when walking out of the theatre. I do have a theory, that Nintendo MIGHT be eventually making a Mario Movie 2, which will include more.

I'm also somewhat disappointed that by the end Mario and Peach weren't confirmed to be a couple, like I don't want a passionate romantic scene or anything, maybe just a little kiss, like most movies do when the princess is saved or whatever.

So, to recap, could've had more characters, could've used certain characters more, Mario and Peach could've got confirmed to be a couple.… Expand

Don't listen to the critics (mostly). A movie doesn't need to have the deepest story to be good. First of all, the characters. Illumination and Nintendo actually did a phenomenal job here. Illumination and Nintendo actually did a phenomenal job here. The two basically main characters of the film are Mario and Peach, who are completely transformed from their game counterparts, going from characters whose essentially only personality traits were "heroic" and "kind," respectively, to characters who have surprising depth (It's nothing crazy, but definitely a big improvement). All the other characters were great too, except for Spike. They turned everyone's favorite fictional foreman into just some generic Illumination guy. Truly an L (for "Luigi left your business"). Mario and Luigi's relationship is also adorable. Next, the voice acting. There was a lot of prerelease apprehension for how Chris Pratt would do as Mario, but he actually nailed it. All the other voices are great, as well. Except maybe Cranky. He sounds real weird. Not that they had much to go on from the games, mind. The art style and animation are gorgeous. Musical score is great, with lots (I think the composer said over 100!) of references to famous themes from the games. Lots of other Easter eggs too! The overall plot, while fairly simple, is very well done. One thing I really liked in specific was that Bowser is presented as a real threat this time. The only real problem I have with the movie besides Foreman Spike is that it does move a little quickly in the first half (one thing the critics did get right), but overall the movie is incredible. Sorry if I droned on a bit!

THE GOOD: Score, animation, references... all of these will bring you to your childhood memories. A must see in the cinema.

THE BAD: It is pretty simple and it feels way too rushed, could have used a bit more of runtime.

This is honestly the best Illumination film I've ever watched in my entire life. And it is also my favorite. Before this movie was released, it was Despicable Me. It is VERY faithful to the games and the references are sick. I know some people didn't like Chris Pratt's performance as Mario but I don't mind it. I actually really loved it. My favorite is Jack Black's performance as Bowser. He literally sounds badass and fits him incredibly well. The voices in the movie are amazing and no one can change my mind about it. The voices are phenomenal. The animation is flawless and great for Illumination standards. The voices are phenomenal. The only flaw is the runtime. I mean, I like the runtime but it just feels like the movie is going quite quickly. But I couldn't care less. It is a Mario film, what did you expect? No trata de ser algo más, Mario es Mario en la película, la mejor adaptación de un videojuego La trama de los juegos no son grandes historias pero hace que te metas en el juego ,la película es exactamente lo mismo ,no es la trama mejor desarrollada, pero en ningún momento te aburre, hace que estés al pendiente cada segundo ,ya sea por lo simple que es pero entretenida ,añadiendo un montón de referencias al juego Mi hija la disfruto ,tengo 35 años ,y si ,es una película para niños pero en el cine la sala estaba llena de niños disfrutando la película con sus hijos ,yo me convertí en niño durante mis mejores 90 minutos minutos en el Cine Fácil esta película entra en mi top 5 personal de películas en general Nintendo simplemente siendo Nintendo
Obvio las malas críticas vienen de estudios que pagaron por eso ,de gente que espera inclusión, etc,etc

I thought this movie was ok, but no more than that. First the good stuff. Graphics, animations and audio are spot on. Voice acting is very good. Overall I'd say this isn't as good as the first Sonic movie, and nowhere near as good as the Lego movie.… Expand

Amazing fan service. Lovingly and carefully written interpretations of the characters. It is obvious Nintendo took great care in supervising Illumination and crafting a film that would appeal to fans and kids alike. Mario and Peach areAmazing fan service. Mario and Peach are selfless heroes with hearts of gold who strive determinedly for others, and their relationship forms the heart of the film. Bowser is equal parts threatening and hilarious. Luigi has an arc, though he could easily have been given more screen time. Toad, DK, and Kamek were all fine. Loved all of the easter eggs and the film’s fast pace will help it on repeat viewings. It’s a real crowd pleaser that had everyone clapping. I can’t wait to see it again.… Expand

How can I explain the Mario movie it's perfect the visuals are absolutely stunning with easter eggs a plenty for any hardcore or causal Mario fans to point at the cinema with glee, the plot is way better than any critics opinion with an amazing unexpected Super Mario Odyssey reference. The music is amazing to listen too with many remixed classic themes such the DK Rap from Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario Bros 3 Airship theme, Superstar theme, Captain Toad Treasure Tacker main theme, and Attack! From Bowser's Fury also a new theme in the film called Peaches which was amazing. Paramount put in more Sonic themes in the third movie.

Chris Pratt is better than anyone would expected, Charlie Day fitted Luigi really well but we could got more of him though, Jack Black steals the show, Keegan-Michael gave us a not annoying Toad voice, Anya Taylor-Joy was an amazing fit for Peach, Seth Rogen was good as DK. Overall the Mario movie is a love letter to every Mario or Nintendo fan with amazing everything, the critics are wrong, the movie ended with an excellent location the Mario series hasn't been to much and the Rainbow Road part was stunning and the best part of the movie. The definition of a MUST WATCH!… Expand

As i've been playing the Mario game since i was a kid both in my Nintendo DS and 3DS, I got a well enough knowledge of Mario Bros. To actually get the whole reference in terms of the object and the music, and that's one of the things7.5/10

To actually get the whole reference in terms of the object and the music, and that's one of the things that i really like about the film, i also quite surprise by the music choosing in the film, good animation, like some of the shot especially the video game perspective angle, and of course the one that people have been most talk about is the voice acting, and i thought everybody did a good job on it, there is a couple of parts that are meh but mostly i'm perfectly fine, my problem is more on the story, it is a straight to the point film which mostly if it's happen in other movie i will absolutely love it, the thing is the story in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the most basic story that they could ever told for a movie, it is entertaining and fun but in the most basic way possible, couple of exciting and impressive scene and visual inside the most basic story of Hero vs Villain type of story, the comedy wasn't really work, couple of little giggle but there is also a couple of cheesy moment, overall The Super Mario Bros. I loved its simplicity, its colorful worlds, its voices (Chris Pratt was excellent), its fidelity to the video games, the movie has soul. I was excited for this movie for over a year. 1st movie Ive been since 2019. Great kid friendly movie and nostalgic from my childhood. My 5 year olds first movie also and he was amazed. Great visuals, great voice acting & no woke trash. And only 1.5 hours long.

One its issues is when the movie rushes into new teritories without really acknowledging the enviorment properly, like I know its targeted to kids but try to impress the hardcore fanbase of these worlds and its characters that have changed video games for the ages. But the film is really fun I will give it that, even for kids to adults you can still have a great time watching this without knowing too much about the mario franchise. Hopefully in a sequel the run time gets extended to flesh out everything with more creative styled worlds like in this one.… Expand
