Game-based movies have improved quite a bit recently. On the one hand, it is still not a masterpiece. So I'm for? I didn't know whether to look forward to it or not, but I tried the film anyway. The very first 7 minutes, which were already released on the Internet before the movie came out, will draw you into the action. It's like John Wick. Not much is expected and we will immediately get tons of violence, which are delicious, but here and there I found CGI a little worse, but otherwise the action scenes flawless. Immediately, we find ourselves from the world of Mortal Kombat on planet Earth, which caused me to feel bad, because I was afraid that the whole film would be from our world and that we would get the opportunity to look into the world of Mortal Kombat at the end, but I can reassure you that this is not the case. You will enjoy Mortal Kombat world enough here, although most of the film takes place in the same place, where several will take place, but I will no longer deal with spoilers. The main characters have not grown very close to my heart, but they are not bad. In short, it's just not my cup of coffee. Quite a few messages fall to laugh. I would compare it a little to the Rangers of the Galaxy. I repeat a little. I don't mean the characters, but the jokes that come here and there. Well, since I didn't have to have characters here, I was quite afraid of how it would develop. Fortunately, everything turned out well. The action, as I already mentioned supr, and I enjoyed the final battle, where there was also a smaller revelation, which I will not reveal again, but I will only say that it is great and makes sense. In short, I want to say that the end didn't save it, but it definitely helped the film a lot. Overall, a good film for me, which I recommend, but probably only to fans of the game series. Expand

The simple plot is that MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) joins with others who have special abilities to take on the evil forces from Outworld. Obviously, the plot serves as a background for the numerous violent encounters. As action goes, there are a few inventive treatments among the brutal bashings and bloody bang-ups. Nothing else matters. There have been better battles in other films, but fans of the game will likely find this one sufficiently action-filled and brutal. Expand

I will admit, the whole movie seemed a bit rushed. There didn't seem to be much character progression even though the cast fit the characters perfectly, apart from the over theatrical Liu Kang.

But in all honestly, it was great fun to watch and it clearly has huge potential, given they listen to fan-feedback for a possible second movie. Just a little rough around the edges.

If you are an MK fan and haven't seen this yet, why are you reading a review? JUST GO SEE THIS! But to all the non-MK fans who are considering this, please understand that overall Critic Review scores are never going to be forgiving to a movie like this..

It has a feverish action-packed pace, and a ton of characters. So naturally, a critic is going to be disappointed that the character development can fall a little behind. But no time is wasted, and every character felt unique and fully-realized, and likeable. There are a couple characters that are laugh-out-loud funny, others that are just flat out cool/swaggy/flashy/fun, some even scary. This is a FUN thrill ride that everyone should give a chance to. This is not some awful Fantastic Four remake, but it also doesn't have the luxury of having every character get their own origin movie, so you have to just jump on the ride and enjoy. If you like imaginative worlds, violent, heart-pumping action, and memorable superpowered characters, this truly does an amazing job of balancing all of this with just enough plot and character development to glue it all together.

Please don't look too much into critic reviews, this just isn't an Oscar-winning drama or artistic marvel, it's an imaginative, rated R, bad a**, stylistic, violent, fun, action thrill ride in the vein of a Snyder's Watchmen, or Dredd, or Deadpool. All Mortal Kombat fans should be watching this 20 times over, and if you like Sci-fi/Fantasy and martial arts and a wide range of imaginative characters duking it out with everything on the line, this may be the beginning of a lifelong journey for you too.

Support this film because Sub-Zero is signed up for 4 more sequels (that's right, 4!) if it does well! Thank you so much to the directors, writers, actors and everyone who was responsible for this film that was so lovingly made with the source material put above all else!

If your not an mk vet but like action movies, you’ll enjoy it.
If you’ve played the games, you’ll love it.
From classic fatalities, to spamming the sweep, in game references galore.

Not to mention Hiroyuki Sanada as Hasashi Hanzo was perfect on so many levels. He brings a level of grace to the character that MK X and MK 11 equally captured.

Asano Tadanobu was also a great choice for Raiden. There has always been a criticism of the God of Thunder being white washed. Asano has the cynicism that echoes the Christopher Lambert portrayal so well.

Saddened over the recast of Shang Tsung but Cary-Hiroyuki can only be so young. Maybe they will recast him as old Shang Tsung, though Goro already died just outside a barn so that was weird.

All in all, a wonderful film to sit through, discuss on the fly, and oooh and ah.

Loved it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was the most excited I've been for a movie in years, boy did this let me down. I don't get why anyone would give this over a 7/10, that blows my mind. There is just so much cheesy dialogue, kano gets way too much screen time, attempting joke after joke, none of which are even the slightest bit funny, the fact that there are so many just becomes incredibly cringy, this coming from someone that loves mk95's kano. For some reason they decided to cast liu kang and kung lao as high school boys, they looked like they weighed all of 150 pounds, hard to not find that silly. Cole apparently can survive easily vs goro, without a power, who for some reason doesn't kill cole in any of the 10+ opportunities he has. The dude with the hammer is lame AF, the bat lady char sucked, coles power or whatever was more like a superhero knock off, for some reason everyone hours him in his plate instead of this completely exposed head, c'mon. I could go on and on, there is so much more, but I'll leave it at that, not even worth watching IMO.

What a bad, bad movie, waited so long to get this movie and this is what they deliver. At the very end, to top it all off, the poorly cast shang tsung saves all his people that died, so it was all a pointless setup, dumb.

The battles of Mortal Kombat will as well. A victory, albeit flawed. I’ve been a casual fan of Mortal Kombat since the arcade days. I also wouldn’t say I’m an avid fighting game player. However, this movie was purely fan service and misunderstood by those who aren’t fans at all. If you’ve watched the first movie or the second, you know there’s a little bit of a niche when it comes to Mortal Kombat. Action, gore, cheesy lines, and oh, overacting. Mortal Kombat (2021) does what it does well. Give amazing fight sequences, provides the gore we know and love from the series as well as leaves us wanting more. However, Mortal Kombat (2021) doesn’t do what it does well, and that’s writing a good script. There are parts in the movie where it feels very.. “Si, se puede (Yes, we can!)” and character development seemed rushed. Definitely with the new character Cole Young. As for a lot of the reviews I’ve seen they’ve all said “the movie could’ve done without Cole” or “Cole is for the new fans”. While I agree with those statements, Cole’s storyline, albeit vanilla, provides a bridge for plot. Else it’d just be the first Mortal Kombat movie, everyone shows up in one place and fights each other in an actual tournament. Come to think of it, that isn’t so bad. Not much of a plot, and no character development.. oh wait, THAT’S THE NICHE OF THE MORTAL KOMBAT MOVIE SERIES!! This movie has a plot, this movie leaves us with something to look forward to. This movie for what it is, gave us what it is, and that’s a classic Mortal Kombat movie. Anyone expecting more are obviously spoiled by more modern day cinema, more specifically ‘The Avengers’.

If you’re gonna give this movie a watch do it with an open mind and open heart. You don’t watch Godzilla vs. King Kong for the plot, you watch it for the monsters and actions. Do the same.

The storyIt's fun to watch, but I would say the movie could get a better direction and casting. What probably appeals to MK fans, is the gore, finishing moves, and special effects, but that's a given, considering the advancement in the sfx. The story itself is decent, logical enough for a videogame plot. With the exception of a few characters like Hanzo, Bi Han, Kano and Shang Tsung, acting is abysmal. The rests feel like a B movie actors, and the bad script surely doesn't help. Not sure why they picked Simon McQuoid to direct a fighting movie such as this, and it shows. The only good fighting sequence is shown at the first seven minutes (available in youtube). They underutilize of having Joe Taslim here, because we know what he's capable of, given the right fight choreography. Most of the other actors seems like they need to train another year to make the fight sequence believable. And for god sake, couldn't they use camera trick to make the movement seems faster like kungfu flick? They move hella slow for chosen warriors. All in all I so wish this would be a hit, commercially and critically. Now I'm not so sure. Expand

From the day I saw Mortal Kombat in the arcade over 25 years ago I have been playing this game. I have unremembered hours of time sunk into this game series over those 25+ years and to this day I am still playing MK almost daily. We are up to MK11 now, but it is really MK, MK2 and the Ultimate that really hold my heart.

My point is... I am a MK fanboy, so take this with a grain of salt.

This movie was **** awesome!!!

The only thing that sucks about it is that if you are a fan you're sure to see some of your favourite characters die, and that is depressing, though of course death is never the end in MK! I am not sure what people are expecting but this is an old school American Martial Arts film. Think "Bloodsport" but modern. The movie is a weak, and I mean weak, framework to get people into a fight sequence. While the plot works, it never is able to rise above the fact that it is a framing device for the fight sequences. This is not a weakness of the film, this is the film makers understanding what they are making and who they are making it for. We are not forced to sit through much mellow drama or other assorted crap.. it is just blood and gore fight sequences pretty much non-stop peppered in with some fun jokes.

What makes the film really step up a notch is the amazing performance of Kano. He carries the movie as he is fun to watch, and funny as **** In fact Kano and Kabal are both fantastic in this movie. Everyone else is taking it a little to seriously. Still the casting is just boss. Scorpion is perfectly cast from Hiroyuki Sanada, and Sub-Zero being played by Joe Taslim is genius. (Can not wait for him to come back as Noob Saibot). Chin Han dose a perfect Shang Tsung and well, really, all in all.... everyone nails it.

The movie has its problems. The forced game lines like "Finish Him" and "Flawless Victory" stand out like dogs balls. With Kano's "Kano Wins" the only one that works. This is probably the films biggest issue, while the dialogue writing is actually really good, particularly the comedic stuff with Kano which is all working, the attempts to call back to the game constantly breaks the reality of the movie.

The gore is not as gory as I would have liked. It is not nearly as gory as the actual modern games, apart from a few "fatalities". If you have seen "The Night Comes for Us"... that is what the gore should have been. More vicious and brutal. This is more like "glory shots".. so the gore is there, but it is more cartoonish than brutal. Even so, in the modern age of Disney and WB comic book films with all the bloodless violence having actual gore and blood in a mainstream movie is 5 aces as far as I am concerned, even if the Indonesian Martial Arts film scene is way in front.

I do not really know what more people could have wanted from a MK film. Lets not pretend that the original movies are some kind of high art. You see some great realisations of your favourite characters, you see them fight... all in all it is a much better MK film that I expected and I was very happy with what I saw.

Verdict : Round 2.... FIGHT!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly hate reading critic reviews... It's like these people literally have no idea about what makes a good movie... I give this movie a 10... I was at the edge of my seat the entire movie. Jumping at certain points because they shot out the lines at the perfect moments. The story was fantastic and stayed true to the original video game. The graphics were phenomenal and what you would expect about big Hollywood Blockbuster. The excitement in the combat scenes will have you at the edge of your seat if you are a true fan. As for the critics I have to honestly ask you if you're not a fan of the series why do you even bother watching these types of movies. If you'd rather vote on something like When Harry met Sally then watch When Harry met Sally and leave the reviews to people who actually enjoy these kinds of movies. You asked me the critics are stupid majority of them. And what pisses me off is that people actually listen to these reviews to decide whether or not they're going to watch a movie or buy a movie and it's determines whether or not we get a sequel. This movie was amazing if you enjoy mortal Kombat and you enjoy the story and the series and everything that has grown around it. If you're not somebody who enjoys this type of thing don't watch it. But don't ruin the rating so that we don't get a sequel because this was a fantastic movie and I hope to God they do a part 2. Expand

Very boring main character Cole, the lines are terrible and not funny. I skipped a lot of the slow parts. Kano is cringe, and Sonya Blade actress just doesn't sell it. I dunno man -- I'm looking back at the original 1995 Mortal Kombat to compare it, and this one is so forgettable, while the '95 version is SO ICONIC? The 1995 Mortal Kombat the characters believed in their roles, casting was great, the jokes actually worked.
There are some good fights scenes in here, especially the final one. But this movie is missing a lot of the elements that made the original propel itself into the stratosphere. This one will be forgotten by tomorrow.

Although many fans were expecting something closer to the original, or had expectations of a certain plot, what the screenwriters did with this movie was a great way to take the key elements of what fans love about Mortal Kombat, and make it their own and unique thing.

They were smart in the fact that they did not throw all their eggs in one basket. As fans know, there are a LOT of characters and lore in the Mortal Kombat universe, and anything more than what was included in this movie would have been overkill. The characters they did include were introduced in a way that goes a little closer to their origins, allowing the opportunity for the evolution of said characters throughout this movie and into (hopefully) the sequels to come. As mentioned, we had fan favorite characters included in this movie, seeing some epic and absolutely brutal fights, giving just enough to satisfy but leaving out just enough to want and anticipate more! Though the plot itself may not be exactly what some fans would expect, what they did do with it was smart and makes sense for the first of a series of movies. Besides the fights, there was a good balance of drama, story, comedy, lore (whether directly or indirectly included), and thrilling moments. For example, the way they started off with Hanzo Hasashi and Bi-Han's story, was enough to get you invested right out of the gate. Those stories and an interesting thread throughout the movie, and into what could be the sequel! This movie was not meant to throw everything we already know at us, but to tell a unique story using elements of what we know, allowing the opportunity to evolve this story throughout multiple movies. All in all, for what it was in and of itself, it did a great job at telling a balanced story with a mix of fan favorite characters, while not overdoing it right out of the gate. I for one hope they do in fact make a sequel, and we get to see where they will take this story next! I loved it and I would highly recommend watching it, but doing so with the intent of enjoying what it is and not what you may necessarily expect, appreciating the unique story they are telling.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying I have loved Mortal Kombat most of my life. it was my first videogame ever. My favorite character was always Scorpion.

I had already expected to hate this movie, because it came to light that Johnny Cage was replaced by a Taven tier fan fiction character: Cole. It didn't help that heir reason for doing that was that they didn't want a white man saving the world. WTF that's racist as hell. Unfortunately, being prepared to hate the movie wasn't nearly enough. It was just an all around bad movie.

Cole was about as interesting as a plank of wood, as was everything centered around him, including the plot of him being a descendant of Scorpion. I couldn't help but laugh at the stupidity. The plot was a mess, the dialogue, pacing acting(while not entirely the actors fault) was a complete mess. A lot of characters get misused in this movie. Kung Lao died so Shang Tsung wouldn't be completely irrelevant. Jax was completely forgettable in this movie, the actor had no charisma, and the creators gave him minimal screen time, (Also he never said "Gotcha"). Liu Kang; the freaking hero of MK accomplished nothing the whole movie until he managed to beat Kabal. Not Goro, not Shang Tsung. Kabal. Kano was one of the only good parts of the movie. The actor seemed to have the time of his life portraying him, which made him that more fun to watch. Scorpion was in the movie for all of twenty minutes, which wouldn't be a problem if they utilized his screen time to its full potential. If you were excited for the inevitable clash between Scorpion and Sub Zero then you'll be disappointed because Scorpion needed help from discount Taven to help him beat the ice mage. I personally looked forward to their fight the most so I was incredibly let down.

Some of the good points of the movie. Kung Lao's complete annihilation of Nitara was one of the only completely satisfying moments in the whole movie. Sub Zero dominated the screen with every scene he was in. He felt like an intimidating antagonist that was worthy of respect, which was something I wished for the other villains. There were gags that only a gamer would understand, like constantly sweeping the leg of the opponent, or turtling and following it with an uppercut.

Another thing that might seem like a small change, but it's infuriating. Mileena's existence. She literally couldn't have been made without Kitana, and there was no mention of her. Not to mention they butchered Mileena's appearance ( she was black and hardly had any pink in her outfit.)

Ultimately this was a movie that did NOT need to be made, but since it was we as the fans deserved WAY better.

It's 2021 we should be able to draft a decent screenplay for a story by now. The earth is about to be conquered and you just did not feel anything.

I say reboot asap, better casting and story and it's all good. It's a positive step forward for sure. It's watchable and entertaining definitely.

It feels like its 80% action scenes jumping from one to the next. As much as I enjoy tons of action, some of that could have been cut down to help with the story which was very weak and at times completely nonsensical even for MK standards. When it comes to characters, everybody got decent screen time for their fights though some not as much as others but all of the main characters were extremely underpowered in this movie including those that should be far stronger and the bad guys are practically all jobbers with nothing going for them besides having their names given for context even though they should be more important down the line. Speaking of characters, I actually did like our new protagonist Cole. I feel if he is included in an MK game in the future, he might be appreciated more but as it stands I still wish he was not in the movie and instead was another character that people do know. Overall though, I did enjoy watching the movie and would watch again and definitely want to see a sequel that improves on it. Expand

Maybe I’m biased where I’ve been a long time fan of the games but it makes zero sense why people are applauding this and give it a ten. The fighting is okay, not great but okay. I loved sub zero and Scorpion especially the actors but the story was such trash it was like the director could not decide what storyline to go with and went with a dual story plot which seems like a poor choice when it’s obvious they had a low budget. I had to force myself to watch this from beginning to end. Messed up my boy raiden and made him a douche. Also, not a fan of the new cole character. Pointless character really and just forgettable. Fans of the series just stick to the games. Hopefully if there’s a sequel we’ll get a larger budget, better writers and a director who knows what their doing and isn’t focused on SJW politics as well. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

In the land of remakes, reboots and streaming services, Warner Bros couldn't have picked a better movie to update, Mortal Kombat. You all might remember the game from the 90's or even the live action thrillers from '95 and '97. Well here we go with an update for the CGI ages. Let's see how this movie turns out for HBO Max and the theater return scene.

For those of you who don't know this much loved series of games and movies, Warner Bros. Describes this movie as MMA fighter, Cole, who is unaware of his heritage-or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, to hunt him down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of some partners in crime who have been marked like him. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, for sanctuary. Here, Cole meets some fighters that will help him to fight in a tournament of Earth's mightiest champions against things that are literally out of this world. But will Cole be able to make the most of himself instead of a punching bag? *eerie air passes by* I know you're just begging to watch it now.

Let's just say this. You know what you came to see and this is just a lovely, bloody and brutal mess. Just like the games, the brutality and fatality of this movie will probably never be matched. 2021 CGI and societal ethics have allowed this violent and entertaining action flick to exist. But let's say I'm not just focus on the blood and gore of it all, the fight sequences are just better than other movies. I can't say I know much about the technical part of martial arts, but the look and feel of the action is superb. In times where movies are just copying the John Wick model of fighting and guns, it's nice to have a movie that is more about the different martial arts and styles. Wish we had more like Ong-Bak but maybe we'll get back to that.

Now to my knowledge of the games, Cole is not a character and I guess that's cool for this movie to add in a different dimension. Lewis Tan does pretty good job in this flick but really the cast is too big for his britches. This movie is full of star power but it's full of some really nice character pieces. People like Kano, played by Josh Lawson, and Sonya Blade, played by Jessica McNamee, do a good job, but others are just plain corny or borderline stereotypical - I'm looking at you Kung Lao. Now, if I look at the characters and not the acting then we venture back in to the realm of worth watching again. On top of that, the writing of this movie is extra basic and boring, except for the quick hitting comedy pieces. What's interesting is the videogames do such a good job of storytelling, yet this movie lets that take a backseat in the basic garbage truck. So, yes, there's room for improvement in this movie but did we even come to see that? Noooooo, no we didn't! Another thing that is slightly annoying is the movie feels long and short at the same time. The ending feels rushed while also taking too long. It's the craziest contrast.

With all of that said, Mortal Kombat is a reboot for the ages. Just like the video games, the movie has come to the present. Mortal Kombat has it's good and bad just like most movies but if you came to see some disgustingly violent scenes then you've come to the right place. For those considering the theater, I recommend just watching on HBO Max. For those of you watching on HBO Max get your bowl of popcorn and FINISH IT!

If you aren't a big MK person you probably won't enjoy it as much. No one can deny the excellent choreography though! 8/10 from me

Mortal Kombat delivers everything it should. Great fight choreography and brutal Fatalities, and it does it all flawlessly.

The writing, (specifically the dialogue and plot lines) are so bad that I could have done better writing the whole movie plot myself in 3 hours. It’s almost as if they made a concerted effort to write the worst story they could.
The acting is some of the worst I’ve seen in the past 2 years, but they can hardly be blamed considering the material they had to work with. The cheesiest, most cringeworthy dialogue imaginable with noticeable plot holes and oversights that would have only required 10 seconds of critical thought to fix. This happens every 5 minutes of the film. I’ll just say that the movie showed a couple signs for potential brilliance, but desperately needed an actual writer and director. This was offensive to me as an MK fan.

We came for a popcorn martial arts film but got a film that has trouble landing the martial arts.

The gems of action-acting being Hiroyuki Sanada(Scorpian), Lewis Tan, and Joe Taslm(Sub-Zero). The rest of our talent just didn't have the martial skills for the long-take fight scenes that Mortal Kombat tried to go for.

I love that they used a lot of no-name actors but either the actors weren't good and everything sounded cringy or the actor was amazing but the dialog was cringy. Either way, it was easy to disconnect from the movie.

Digno, visceral e muito empolgante.
Podemos falar MK2021 estabeleceu um novo patamar de como realizar uma ótima adaptação de um game nos cinemas.

Gets a 3 mainly for Kano. Without him, this movie is unwatchable. It's borderline unwatchable already but at least his humor is good. I think you can imagine how bad the movie really is. Terrible casting and writing overall just leads to a boring movie. Got a little over an hour into it and just had to turn it off. Wouldn't bother trying to watch again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was bad. In the end I was really pissed off because it doesn't follow at all the plot of the game. There's no tournament, the characters are killed without any respects. Expand
