The script was just awful from start to finish, Kano was the only part that made it enjoyable and most of kombat towards the end of the movie. I could not help myself but cringe through the entire film, it made no sense. The story is just... Not great... And that's putting it nicely.

Feels predictable, poorly done and the pacing is just so jarring. Whole film felt like a giant **** of confusion and failed ideas.

I didn't expect many from this movie but its even worst than I can imagine.
Bad scenario, bad acting, bad fights.
Cole Young...why? Mortal kombat have around 50 60 characters and they create new one with stupid power of armor and ability likeI didn't expect many from this movie but its even worst than I can imagine.

Kano is the only good thing in the movie , funny aggressive and lookalike game design, but without cybernetic parts.
You have everything ready you just have to transfer it on the screen but you still cant do even this.
Take the story from the game and just show it to us like it is.

Overall the movie had a frame of potential that was quickly ruined by cringey jokes , terrible lines , and deaths that seemed almost forced. Что же я могу сказать по поводу этого фильма? Смог ли он изменить мое мнение. Что ж хотелось бы начать с того, что после просмотра данного фильма я был в полном ужасе. Дело даже не в том, что фильм оказался для меня, фаната этой классной вселенной, ужасно плох. Меня ужаснула реакция людей, которые получали от этого фильма огромное удовольствие. Оказывается, можно снять откровенную халтуру и замаскировать её огромной кучей фансервиса — а зритель будет доволен.
1) Начать хочу с Турнира, которого в фильме… просто нет.
«Но постойте, — возразит знакомый с франшизой читатель, — ведь в большей части игр Турнира тоже не было!». Да, всё верно, но это первый фильм в серии, и он должен был быть посвящен именно Турниру.
2) Что должно быть в центре фильма по Mortal Kombat? Турнир, драки, спасение мира. Нет, в центре фильма — суперспособности, избранные и пророчество. В здешнем Турнире участвуют не лучшие из лучших, а обладатели особой метки в виде дракона, которую можно получить от рождения или убив другого носителя метки. Кому принадлежит эта идея, это же полная хрень!!!
3) Персонажи:
Хорошо: Кано, Соня Блэйд.
Нормально: Кун Лао, Скорпион, Саб-Зиро, Кабал.
Средне: Коул Янг.
Плохо: Шан Цзун, Милина, Джакс, Лю Кан.
Ужасно: Рэйден, Рептилия, Горо, Нитара, Рейко.
Этому фильму можно простить многое, можно придумать много оправданий: «у создателей было мало денег», «это режиссёрский дебют», «ну это же фильм категории B». Вы меня конечно извините, но это ужасное кино!!!
Годы ожиданий не стоили этого!!!… Expand

This was sooo much fun to watch.. if you’re a fan of the games you’ll find lots to love here. Yeah, there are some grizzly fatalities, but the story is beyond dumb. The main new character is just so bland; you don't care for him in any way. Just saw it. I would call it average. Too average. In short - It’s fun, but really dumb.

I can’t help but remember that awesome viral trailer a few years back that reimagined Mortal Kombat in a dark, grounded, realistic way. That would of been 100x better than this. It’s not terrible, it’sIn short - It’s fun, but really dumb.

It’s not terrible, it’s fun. But the editing and pacing is awful (like seemingly all tentpole WB movies), the story is really dumb, and the fight scenes are so heavily edited I can’t even tell what’s going on half the time. It just looks super fake, like all American fighting movies where the actors can’t actually fight. It is a shame, because some of the actors look like they could actually fight and some of the choreography and special effects are cool.

Overall, its was disappointing, but it’s worth the watch if you already have HBO max. Just don’t waste your money to see it in the theater.… Expand

I get the whole idea of needing a new character for a new audience but this is a series that has had an established audience for the passed 30 years almost. Anyone just now joining in is super late to the party.

I will say that I appreciate all the fatalities and references to the games but this just wasn't as good as the original movie imo… Expand

Not only the character is bland and boring, but the actor himself can't act... he just can't. The dialogues are also pretty cringe and looked like they were written by a 10 year old ("These guys have super human abilities" - "impossible!!!"... like, like.)

Don't go into this expecting some deep **** just close your ears and pretend you're watching an overly corny video game plot and you're gonna have a good time. Having said that, I do want a sequel. Movie has flaws, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A real shame as it comes across as a B-grade film. It hit all the right notes as a fan of the game, the casts looked the part, well, almost. Goro was done amazingly, it was cast well for the most part and the little Easter egg lines were a good touch.

That said, the acting, writing and pacing was just not very good, and it saddens me to say this because I've waited over 20 years for another real Mortal Kombat movie. Sub Zero and Scorpion set the bar but the rest never came close. The acting and fighting of Sub Zero and Scorpion was amazing and showed the true potential of the movie but the other character fights were just weak and filler. So many moments could have been better like when Cole was fighting Mileena and Sonya comes in for the finisher. That was an opportunity for a well coordinated combo move yet, it just looked half assed and a wasted chance. Her finisher looked good but it didn't have the proper set to properly highlight it. There's also tons of plot holes, like when Shang Tsung talks about going behind Raiden's back to kill the earth's champions, only to show up at his temple to let Raiden know his plans. All in all, it's worth checking out if you're a fan of the franchise but it pays tribute as a fan movie rather than a blockbuster to break the video game movie curse.… Expand

However, this movie was purely fan service and misunderstood by those who aren’t fans at all. If you’ve watched the first movie or the second, you know there’s a little bit of a niche when it comes to Mortal Kombat. Action, gore, cheesy lines, and oh, overacting. Mortal Kombat (2021) does what it does well. Give amazing fight sequences, provides the gore we know and love from the series as well as leaves us wanting more. However, Mortal Kombat (2021) doesn’t do what it does well, and that’s writing a good script. There are parts in the movie where it feels very.. “Si, se puede (Yes, we can!)” and character development seemed rushed. Definitely with the new character Cole Young. As for a lot of the reviews I’ve seen they’ve all said “the movie could’ve done without Cole” or “Cole is for the new fans”. While I agree with those statements, Cole’s storyline, albeit vanilla, provides a bridge for plot. Else it’d just be the first Mortal Kombat movie, everyone shows up in one place and fights each other in an actual tournament. Come to think of it, that isn’t so bad. Not much of a plot, and no character development.. oh wait, THAT’S THE NICHE OF THE MORTAL KOMBAT MOVIE SERIES!! This movie has a plot, this movie leaves us with something to look forward to. This movie for what it is, gave us what it is, and that’s a classic Mortal Kombat movie. Anyone expecting more are obviously spoiled by more modern day cinema, more specifically ‘The Avengers’.

If you’re gonna give this movie a watch do it with an open mind and open heart. You don’t watch Godzilla vs. King Kong for the plot, you watch it for the monsters and actions. Do the same.… Expand

It is fair to say I am bias with this movie. From the day I saw Mortal Kombat in the arcade over 25 years ago I have been playing this game. I have unremembered hours of time sunk into this game series over those 25+ years and to this day IIt is fair to say I am bias with this movie. From the day I saw Mortal Kombat in the arcade over 25 years ago I have been playing this game. I have unremembered hours of time sunk into this game series over those 25+ years and to this day I am still playing MK almost daily. We are up to MK11 now, but it is really MK, MK2 and the Ultimate that really hold my heart.

My point is... I am a MK fanboy, so take this with a grain of salt.

This movie was **** awesome!!!

The only thing that sucks about it is that if you are a fan you're sure to see some of your favourite characters die, and that is depressing, though of course death is never the end in MK! I am not sure what people are expecting but this is an old school American Martial Arts film. Think "Bloodsport" but modern. The movie is a weak, and I mean weak, framework to get people into a fight sequence. While the plot works, it never is able to rise above the fact that it is a framing device for the fight sequences. This is not a weakness of the film, this is the film makers understanding what they are making and who they are making it for. We are not forced to sit through much mellow drama or other assorted crap.. it is just blood and gore fight sequences pretty much non-stop peppered in with some fun jokes.

What makes the film really step up a notch is the amazing performance of Kano. He carries the movie as he is fun to watch, and funny as **** In fact Kano and Kabal are both fantastic in this movie. Everyone else is taking it a little to seriously. Still the casting is just boss. Scorpion is perfectly cast from Hiroyuki Sanada, and Sub-Zero being played by Joe Taslim is genius. (Can not wait for him to come back as Noob Saibot). Chin Han dose a perfect Shang Tsung and well, really, all in all.... everyone nails it.

The movie has its problems. The forced game lines like "Finish Him" and "Flawless Victory" stand out like dogs balls. With Kano's "Kano Wins" the only one that works. This is probably the films biggest issue, while the dialogue writing is actually really good, particularly the comedic stuff with Kano which is all working, the attempts to call back to the game constantly breaks the reality of the movie.

The gore is not as gory as I would have liked. It is not nearly as gory as the actual modern games, apart from a few "fatalities". If you have seen "The Night Comes for Us"... that is what the gore should have been. More vicious and brutal. This is more like "glory shots".. so the gore is there, but it is more cartoonish than brutal. Even so, in the modern age of Disney and WB comic book films with all the bloodless violence having actual gore and blood in a mainstream movie is 5 aces as far as I am concerned, even if the Indonesian Martial Arts film scene is way in front.

I do not really know what more people could have wanted from a MK film. Lets not pretend that the original movies are some kind of high art. You see some great realisations of your favourite characters, you see them fight... all in all it is a much better MK film that I expected and I was very happy with what I saw.

Gets a 3 mainly for Kano. Without him, this movie is unwatchable. It's borderline unwatchable already but at least his humor is good. Crige and budget. Suposed to have hired martial artists, but the fights are bad and the acting atrocious.. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My biggest issue was the incongruous tone. The opening and the rest of the movie felt entirely different from one another. The actors and their dialogue didn't match the mood - specifically the lighting and music, which weren't really doing them any favors. If the goal is to make a serious moment with a menacing monster, then stop lighting everything up like it's a scene from Mary Poppins. Make it dark... make the scene have some weight, give the character an edge of menace....just so many weird directorial choices that seemed to try and blend things together that it honestly came across as a mid-90s straight-to-tv teen movie.

The fatalities were fun and the fighting wasn't bad, but it definitely could have been filmed better - longer shots would have helped showcase the raw talent of the actors they chose. I've seen arguments that the script shouldn't have to be superb because it's a video game movie, and if people expected a good story then they're looking at the wrong film. I have a problem with that sentiment. Video game movies have been historically bad, but they don't have to be. Sure, the story is "two wizards gather their respective teams and face off for the fate of the world." ... but so is lord of the rings... and if the argument is that it's a fighting movie so there doesn't need to be a deep plot, then showcase the fighting; don't jump cut every 2 seconds. And realistically, for the fights to really shine, they needed far more character development. I know that's hard to do in a 2 hour movie, but that's why they don't need to try and rush through and cram as much as possible into the movie. They should take their time and tell a good, deliberate, focused story. If that means they can only get two or three characters in it, then fine. People will pay to see a good movie with a good story about those characters. Hell, people paid to see a movie where Tom hanks and a volleyball were the only real characters. You don't need to thrust in a dozen people and try to fit everything in at once. The worst part is, they obviously didn't even need to worry about everyone in this movie anyway, since we're not getting a tournament until next movie at the earliest. They could have REALLY spent time building a foundation so we cared, but opted for a shotgun approach.

As well, the "magic" they threw at us. I cant pinpoint why exactly, but wow did that rub me the wrong way. Magic-arm Jax was just such a big head shake from me I almost gave myself whiplash.

All of that notwithstanding, I will say that some of it was okay. I actually really liked Kanos character. I liked Not-Reptile more than I thought I would. I liked how Kung Lao was portrayed, although he went out because of dumb reasons (really, Liu threw a fireball at kano for talking.. can't muster up a little one to save your cousin?) And of course Scorpion and Sub Zero were really on point (the little bit that we saw them - another point of criticism). So yeah, I think the casting as a whole was honestly pretty decent, some things just felt off-putting. And the entire movie felt really rushed.

It was just a strange movie, overall. And not necessarily a pleasant one; it felt like something I'd watch on CW after The Flash or some other DC show. Really kinda disappointed.… Expand

This movie is a ton of fun! Loved every moment. The pacing was on point and the action scenes were choreographed well. Best game adaptation in a long time. If you love MK you will love this movie. If your new to MK you may not appreciate it as much.

Raiden, Shang Tsung and Liu Kang were the biggest disappointments as they had zero personality and very little dialogue. These were the ones suffering from over-acting. The actress who played Sonya was awful to watch and the less dialogue she had the better.… Expand

If your not an mk vet but like action movies, you’ll enjoy it.
If you’ve played the games, you’ll love it.
From classic fatalities, to spamming the sweep, in game references galore.

Not to mention Hiroyuki Sanada as Hasashi Hanzo was perfect on so many levels. He brings a level of grace to the character that MK X and MK 11 equally captured.

Asano Tadanobu was also a great choice for Raiden. There has always been a criticism of the God of Thunder being white washed. Asano has the cynicism that echoes the Christopher Lambert portrayal so well.

Saddened over the recast of Shang Tsung but Cary-Hiroyuki can only be so young. Maybe they will recast him as old Shang Tsung, though Goro already died just outside a barn so that was weird.

All in all, a wonderful film to sit through, discuss on the fly, and oooh and ah.

Its just as campy as the 90s classic with my biggest complaint is the how much the second half of the movie is what everyone is here for. Good entertainment, fans of MK will definitely enjoy. A bit shallow story-wise. Would have enjoyed more fleshed-out characters (Kabal and Mileena). It's a solid 7/10.
