Great movie, if you followed the games and their story. The actors do a great job, effects are top notch and there is no BS, don't get fooled by some negative reviews.

Its decent.

It fits the mold of what you would expect. Pretty CGI, extensive martial arts & presumably wire-fu. The basic set piece of the video game.

It makes a weird step to try to seem fresh with some of its character choices. It also sets itself up to likely be a trilogy of films. Question is, why?

Its definitely as good as the original Mortal Kombat was back in the 90s for its time. It has ample easter eggs to hunt for and hits a lot of lore choices along the way. It just really does not serve a lot of purpose that has not already been covered by the original. All that is really getting added is higher budget graphics and updated rosters with a few left for future sequels to "unlock"

Its good, and serves its purpose. Just like the original it will be mostly forgettable for being a video game film adaptation that isnt terrible.
6.75/10 rounded up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its okay...really.

The opening was phenominal and made me choke a little...serious...no really!!
It set the bar too high actually, as the movie focuses on Cole (a new character that somehow connected to Scorpion. Honestly, the high points of the remainder of the movies was Kano's acting, Kabal, Sonia and the short Sun-Zero/Scorpion fight. The Shaolin Monks were cool and could've used more team action from them. I liked how they threw in VERY subtle MK jokes and the Fatalities were cool.
BUT no Cage and Raiden never fights despite Outworld clearly breaking every rule of Mortal Kombat that was explained.

The original MK1 had better actors, settings, story and setting. Had there been a deeper focus on some backstory on other characters and the narrative focus on slighty higher pace than the opening, then yeah it would've been cooler.

Also, I hate to say this but Raiden was poorly casted.
This is an English-speaking movie and his accent was just so thick, I mean Shang Tsung's actor was crystal and well spoken. I know that sounds wrong or maybe in comparison to how clear Christopher Lambert spoke, I can be better understood.

Jax, Sonja, Kano had at least some form of arc and personality to go with it. Cole who? Sub Zero and Scorpion were the best part and both a class act.

Personally I would of liked a cat and mouse revenge take set in feudal japan than all the cheesy modern day stuff. That would of made the film a whole lot classier for sure. At times this Mortal Kombat felt like Mortal Kombat Annihilation.

The introductions of the other characters are also well done but the writers decided to go with an original character named Cole that wasn't seen before in any MK game. That fell flat. The character of Cole is rather bland, especially considering the fact that he is the descendant of such an iconic character as Scorpion. The fight scenes are a mixed bag. While they went all out on the gore, which is good and simply fits the franchise, the fighting feels too much like something we would see in a Marvel super hero movie. While some direct references to the games work rather well, others went way overboard. It gets just a bit too goofy when the fighters take the role of the MK game announcer and say "Fatalaty!" or "Flawless Victory!" multiple times during the movie. Overall, I would rate the movie as okay. It's watchable, it's entertaining, but it's nothing special. Expand

After the disastrous box office bomb and critical flopped of 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, there were no Mortal Kombat movies for nearly two decades until the direct-to-video release of 2020’s Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge and this movie. As for this movie, it is a reboot and not connected to the first two movies. Unlike the first two movies and just like Scorpion’s Revenge, the reboot is rated R.

An MMA fighter named Cole Young (Tan) and his family are attack by Bi-Han/Sub-Zero (Taslim) but Special Forces Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs and his partner, Sonya Blade (McNamee), manage to rescue them in time. Jax stay behind while he fight Sub-Zero but he end up losing both his arms. Once Cole got his family to safety, he and Sonya go to her hideout.

At her hideout, he learn that about a deathmatch tournament called Mortal Kombat. The tournament was created to give Earthrealm a chance to defend themselves from Outworld. Now that the latter have won nine out of ten tournaments, they just need to win one more tournament so that they can invade Earthrealm legally.

Cole also learn that he has a dragon marking which means he has been chosen to represent Earthrealm in the upcoming tournament. Cole and Sonya reluctantly recruit an Australian mercenary, Kano, after being attacked by Reptile. Together, they travel to Raiden’s temple where they meet the other fighters, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, in order to be train for the tournament. Meanwhile, a soul-eating sorcerer, Shang Tsung, with the help from his minions have begin killing Earthrealm’s fighters with dragon marking before the next tournament starts.

First of all, I’ve got to say that this reboot is good. It is definitely much better than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Not only it is much better, the movie is faithful to the source material. The movie cashed in on the rated R and the inclusion of the franchise’s iconic signature, Fatality. This is what Mortal Kombat should be. Full of bloody, gore and violence like the video games which the first two movies do not have due to those movies being rated PG-13. The fighting scenes are really well done and much better than the previous movies. It is so well shot that it feels you are watching cutscenes from Mortal Kombat video games.

The characters in the movie resemble the characters from the video game which is another reason why this movie is faithful to the source material. The acting in this movie great especially Joe Taslim and Josh Lawson. For the former, he played the character very well as an intimidating villain like he is the main antagonist of the movie instead of Shang Tsung. As for the latter, he is perfect for the role of Kano, Besides sharing the same nationality, Josh is very much as Australian person you could find in real life. He is also played the role of comic relief really well which I cannot stop laughing. He stole every scenes in the movie. Let’s not forget about Hiroyuki Sanada, who played Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion in the movie. Despite not having much screen time, he played the character very well and he even get to say his iconic catchphrase better than how he said it in the trailer. I hope to see him more and play bigger role in the sequel if there is one.

On the bad side of the movie, I felt the storyline in the movie is rushed. Because of that, some characters do not have much developement including Cole Young. Speaking of Cole, I felt that he was overshadowed by the other characters to the point of being forgettable due to Cole being movie exclusive character. Shang Tsung did not even have much screen time as the main antagonist and the role was pretty much took over by Sub-Zero.

Nevertheless, this movie is still good but neither the best nor worst video game movie. As far as I know, this movie is definitely much better than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation which I have said earlier. Whether you think is movie is better than the 1995 movie or the other way around, is up for debate. If you are a fan of Mortal Kombat, don’t miss this one. I cannot wait for the sequel especially how the ending teases another famous and iconic character from the video game.

John Lawson steals every scene he is in as Kano. He is hilarious and genuinely some of the best parts of Mortal Kombat (2021). Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Jessica McNamee as Sonya is all also great casting as they resemble the characters from the game perfectly. Tadanobu Asano is very majestic as Lord Raiden and Chin Han is very sinister as Shang Tsung. I also really appreciate having an Asian be the main character with Lewis Tan as Cole Young. It's great that the director, Simon McQuoid, is giving Asians more representation in mainstream media and I can appreciate that.

A lot of video game movies don't work because it is clear the director and writers are not fans of the respective game. However, this is not the case here and this clearly shows within the movie. They have authentic casting so characters that were Asian in the game are played by Asians in the movie, characters act and resemble their game counterparts, gruesome fatalities and a lot of game references. Additionally, the first 10 minutes is amazing and is such a great start to the movie. The last 15 minutes of the movie is also really good which is down to the fact that any scene with Sub-Zero and Scorpion is great. The score by Benjamin Wallfisch is also quite good at times when orchestral instruments are used. However, sometimes the score can be quite odd such as when electronic sounds are used in the 17th-century scene which doesn't sound right. Furthermore, the editing of certain scenes is quite bad. Despite casting an actual martial artist who can fight, the director still uses a lot of quick cuts in fight scenes that just ruin it. It even happens during sparring fights which just makes it very disorienting. The most jarring editing comes around the middle where multiple fights are occurring with different characters and the scene just keeps constantly swapping between all of them. Instead of just focusing on one fight at a time which would result in a more pleasant experience. On that note, the action scenes not concerning Sub Zero or Scorpion lack a lot of brutality, grit and damage. You don't feel like the characters are getting hurt enough as during fights it feels like they are just slapping each other about. Where are the broken bones, bruises or physical impact in these fights?

Another major flaw is the main lead Cole Young as he is very bland and uninteresting. The only thing about his character is he a chosen one and he has a family that he cares about. It's boring. The supporting characters are not that great either since there are way too many characters and not enough time exploring them. Liu Kang and Kung Lao appear but are pretty much just the strong yet generic Asian guys. Jax and Sonya are just initially there to get the plot moving and then fight some people which is all there is to them. Mileena, Goro and Kabal are in the movie but are just there to be fodder for the heroes. We get absolutely no information about them, not even an explanation on why Kabal has super speed. Raiden is a good powerful guy and Shang Tsung is a bad powerful guy. Both barely appear and when they do it is when the plot needs teleporting stuff.

MINOR SPOILERS HERE
Following that, the story is a mess. It starts in the 17th century with Scorpion and Sub Zero. Scorpion's family gets murdered and he dies as well but goes to hell. However, his thirst for vengeance for his family being murdered by Sub Zero will bring him out of hell and that alone is an interesting story. Such a shame we ignore that and just focus on boring Cole Young. The marketing plays up Scorpion's role but he is only at the beginning and the end. He also just randomly appears at the end with little to no explanation. It's very baffling even to me, a Mortal Kombat fan. Throughout Mortal Kombat (2021) there is a lot of build-up for this tournament. It feels like the movie will conclude with the tournament but it does not which is kind of annoying. They spend two-thirds of the movie leading to it but then decide in the 3rd act just to forget about it.

Overall, Mortal Kombat (2021) does a lot of right in satisfying fans but doesn't do enough to bring new people in. It feels like they were just ticking boxes instead of making a cohesive and good movie in general. Mortal Kombat has great characters which are why the movie should've just focused on one of them instead of just bringing in as many characters as they could. The movie has a fair amount of things better than the 1995 version but a fair amount that isn't as well. The only conclusion that I got out of it was that at least it was way better than Mortal Kombat Annihilation and honestly that is a huge win in my book.

But seeing something just as iconic as the latter makes me believe it a little more, Mortal Kombat movie is not some amazing recreation of the game but a competent argument for the 'Video game movies are now good' side.

The Good
A lot of things were well done, primarily the fight scenes and I believe that the character's personalities are well captured from the overall mythos of Mortal Kombat franchise.

The gore was welcome and so was the competent CGI that was used to create this movie, some uncanny valley stuff pops up here and there but everything pretty much holds up.

The best part of the movie was Kano however, I did not expect to enjoy the smart/foul mouthed Australian stereotype portrayal. I guess casting a true blue Aussie like Josh Lawson paid of well. I was genuinely sad to see him die, hopefully some Shang Tsung sorcery will bring him back for a sequel. Shout out to Sanada for giving a short but great performance as Hanzo/The face of the MK franchise aka Scorpion.

Jessica/Blade, Mechad/Jax, Han/Tsung, Lin/Liu, Huang/Lao and Asano/Raiden all looked like they enjoyed their time on sets and really got the essence of the MK franchise in their interactions.

The Bad
My one hope is that Cole does not come back in the sequel or if he does they give him the Cage treatment from Annihilation and then transfer over the POV of the hero to the actor that plays Cage.
Cole was quite boring just stumbling from one set piece to another except for the end where he faces off vs Goro. I get the need for a audience viewpoint into a new world but do all these slapped on characters in such franchises need to be a wet towel, I'm sure they can do better.

The pacing was a bit off, going briskly from plot point to plot point at a good speed and then just turbocharging into the climax suddenly it was a bit abrupt but manageable.

All in all this was a fun watch just like Sonic, not gonna be watching this again for a while but hopefully there will be a sequel.

The spirit is there and even though the 95 movie will always be my jam this is a good attempt nonetheless that deserves one more chance to get it right.

This film’s big issue is that it really didn’t do anything to keep me interested. I found myself dozing off at points and having to rewind a couple times because I would miss something. I also just didn’t really care about the characters that much. Even if you have played the games, a lot of these characters aren’t given arcs and the ones that do have one, their conclusions don’t feel satisfying. The only thing that really kept me going was the fight scenes but it wasn’t because the choreography was cool, it was because I liked the use of blood. The Mortal Kombat games are very violent and this film keeps that element. The film is pretty brutal at points and I enjoyed that but nothing else stood out. The fight scene at the beginning was cool but I don’t remember any of the other fight scenes after that. A lot of them feel like they mesh together and don’t have a big impact on the overall story. The film is bland looking. Nothing about the cinematography or the lighting really caught my eye. I did like some of the production design though. The sets for some of the fight scenes look cool at points and I kinda liked the guy with the metal arms. That’s really about it. There isn’t a whole lot I remember about this film and I watched it less than a week ago. Check it out if you want but you’re missing nothing if you skip it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't say that this movie diverges more than that from what I rationally expected from the Mortal Kombat franchise. Yet it is very disappointing.

It perfectly showcases how shallow the franchise is: the lore could be way more precise and full of details. The characters are just the fighters we all know and they are 'useless' (as Raiden says) if they don't find and use their surnatural powers. The concept of death is really weird since Scorpion is able to come back to life. The protagonists spend the most part of the movie talking about a tournament we don't see in the end (maybe in the sequel who knows). There is no reason for Sub-Zero to be that strong, I mean why would Scorpion need the help of a rookie to defeat him? In general, what irritated me the most was the lack of attention of the producers leading to countless incorrect scenes: fighters have wounds that never heal, that disappear from their bodies to return later in the feature and people's positions always change even if they are not in motion.

Fortunately we deserve some mildly bloody sequences but same problem here: wounds are useless and never taken in account. If there are many easter eggs and special moves 'Mortal Kombat' wasn't that brutal to me excepted some particular scenes. The characters are really unattractive (especially Raiden and Sonya) and I found Kano to be dull and insipide. Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is so uncharismatic.

CGI is gorgeous (but how could it not be that way with the amount of money spend on this feature). Soundtrack is okay but uneven throughout the movie. Overall acting is terrible. Scenario is predictable. No replayability.

When my friends invited me to watch a movie with them I did not expect it to be the New MK movie and was less than thrilled. After seeing the movie for the first time I can honestly say that it passed my expectations by an exponential amount. The choreographed fight scenes were exhilarating to watch, the character cameos were on point, and the cheesy one liners were not overused. I enjoyed watching a diverse cast of actors that fit well into their roles with the exception of Cole Young played by Lewis Tan. I didn’t particularly think his acting was on par with his cast members and kept wondering why he was picked for the main role of this movie. He did exceptionally well in the fight scenes but his delivery in the more conversational parts of the movie were lacking. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. Expand

Of all the places they could've picked, why the hell did they choose Gary, Indiana? I could be here all day explaining why that makes zero sense at all.

The lack of general Mortal Kombat knowledge from the filmmakers is baffling, they played maybe 5 minutes of one game and went from there. If you're going to make an adaptation of something, at least learn more the baseline lore so you don't have to make sh*t up. They completely butchered all of the characters and they feel like caricatures. Especially Scorpion, why did you have to do that to my boy? Scorpion, who is arguably the strongest and most feared fighter in the realms, feels completely useless in this film. None of his brutality nor ferociousness is felt whatsoever in the 5 minutes he is in the movie. This is simply a terrible film adaptation.

Very boring main character Cole, the lines are terrible and not funny. I skipped a lot of the slow parts. Kano is cringe, and Sonya Blade actress just doesn't sell it. I dunno man -- I'm looking back at the original 1995 Mortal Kombat to compare it, and this one is so forgettable, while the '95 version is SO ICONIC? The 1995 Mortal Kombat the characters believed in their roles, casting was great, the jokes actually worked.
There are some good fights scenes in here, especially the final one. But this movie is missing a lot of the elements that made the original propel itself into the stratosphere. This one will be forgotten by tomorrow.

Then after that, I was so disappointed. Action sequences were good, special effects and sound were good. But the story, casting, and acting were not so solid. It's 2021 we should be able to draft a decent screenplay for a story by now. The earth is about to be conquered and you just did not feel anything.

I say reboot asap, better casting and story and it's all good. It's a positive step forward for sure. It's watchable and entertaining definitely.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start by saying I have loved Mortal Kombat most of my life. it was my first videogame ever. My favorite character was always Scorpion.

I had already expected to hate this movie, because it came to light that Johnny Cage was replaced by a Taven tier fan fiction character: Cole. It didn't help that heir reason for doing that was that they didn't want a white man saving the world. WTF that's racist as hell. Unfortunately, being prepared to hate the movie wasn't nearly enough. It was just an all around bad movie.

Cole was about as interesting as a plank of wood, as was everything centered around him, including the plot of him being a descendant of Scorpion. I couldn't help but laugh at the stupidity. The plot was a mess, the dialogue, pacing acting(while not entirely the actors fault) was a complete mess. A lot of characters get misused in this movie. Kung Lao died so Shang Tsung wouldn't be completely irrelevant. Jax was completely forgettable in this movie, the actor had no charisma, and the creators gave him minimal screen time, (Also he never said "Gotcha"). Liu Kang; the freaking hero of MK accomplished nothing the whole movie until he managed to beat Kabal. Not Goro, not Shang Tsung. Kabal. Kano was one of the only good parts of the movie. The actor seemed to have the time of his life portraying him, which made him that more fun to watch. Scorpion was in the movie for all of twenty minutes, which wouldn't be a problem if they utilized his screen time to its full potential. If you were excited for the inevitable clash between Scorpion and Sub Zero then you'll be disappointed because Scorpion needed help from discount Taven to help him beat the ice mage. I personally looked forward to their fight the most so I was incredibly let down.

Some of the good points of the movie. Kung Lao's complete annihilation of Nitara was one of the only completely satisfying moments in the whole movie. Sub Zero dominated the screen with every scene he was in. He felt like an intimidating antagonist that was worthy of respect, which was something I wished for the other villains. There were gags that only a gamer would understand, like constantly sweeping the leg of the opponent, or turtling and following it with an uppercut.

Another thing that might seem like a small change, but it's infuriating. Mileena's existence. She literally couldn't have been made without Kitana, and there was no mention of her. Not to mention they butchered Mileena's appearance ( she was black and hardly had any pink in her outfit.)

Ultimately this was a movie that did NOT need to be made, but since it was we as the fans deserved WAY better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was the most excited I've been for a movie in years, boy did this let me down. I don't get why anyone would give this over a 7/10, that blows my mind. There is just so much cheesy dialogue, kano gets way too much screen time, attempting joke after joke, none of which are even the slightest bit funny, the fact that there are so many just becomes incredibly cringy, this coming from someone that loves mk95's kano. For some reason they decided to cast liu kang and kung lao as high school boys, they looked like they weighed all of 150 pounds, hard to not find that silly. Cole apparently can survive easily vs goro, without a power, who for some reason doesn't kill cole in any of the 10+ opportunities he has. The dude with the hammer is lame AF, the bat lady char sucked, coles power or whatever was more like a superhero knock off, for some reason everyone hours him in his plate instead of this completely exposed head, c'mon. I could go on and on, there is so much more, but I'll leave it at that, not even worth watching IMO.

What a bad, bad movie, waited so long to get this movie and this is what they deliver. At the very end, to top it all off, the poorly cast shang tsung saves all his people that died, so it was all a pointless setup, dumb.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overhyped. This describes the movie in one single word.
It starts good, making you think that it will be well done, dark and bloody... Then it turns into an absolute joke with ridiculous acting, bad one-liners (which I think were supposed to hype fans but it only made it terrible in my eyes) and cringeworthy plot... Most of the evil characters are pretty much treated as simple grunts, Nitara having the worst of them all (she literally lasts for 2 minutes worth of screen time). The only valuable notes were the Sub-Zero effects, the fight with Scorpion (still somehow ruined by the main character) and the opening scene. All the rest, including the absurd plot of "unlocking the arcana" is just terrible.
Oh, and one more thing...
Why on Earth were all the characters' ethnicities respected but Mileena has been assigned to a black actress? It just makes absolutely no sense except for "BECAUSE YES, THAT'S WHY".

I'd give the movie 0 but it gets a 1 because it made me laugh at how bad it was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Although many fans were expecting something closer to the original, or had expectations of a certain plot, what the screenwriters did with this movie was a great way to take the key elements of what fans love about Mortal Kombat, and make it their own and unique thing.

They were smart in the fact that they did not throw all their eggs in one basket. As fans know, there are a LOT of characters and lore in the Mortal Kombat universe, and anything more than what was included in this movie would have been overkill. The characters they did include were introduced in a way that goes a little closer to their origins, allowing the opportunity for the evolution of said characters throughout this movie and into (hopefully) the sequels to come. As mentioned, we had fan favorite characters included in this movie, seeing some epic and absolutely brutal fights, giving just enough to satisfy but leaving out just enough to want and anticipate more! Though the plot itself may not be exactly what some fans would expect, what they did do with it was smart and makes sense for the first of a series of movies. Besides the fights, there was a good balance of drama, story, comedy, lore (whether directly or indirectly included), and thrilling moments. For example, the way they started off with Hanzo Hasashi and Bi-Han's story, was enough to get you invested right out of the gate. Those stories and an interesting thread throughout the movie, and into what could be the sequel! This movie was not meant to throw everything we already know at us, but to tell a unique story using elements of what we know, allowing the opportunity to evolve this story throughout multiple movies. All in all, for what it was in and of itself, it did a great job at telling a balanced story with a mix of fan favorite characters, while not overdoing it right out of the gate. I for one hope they do in fact make a sequel, and we get to see where they will take this story next! I loved it and I would highly recommend watching it, but doing so with the intent of enjoying what it is and not what you may necessarily expect, appreciating the unique story they are telling.

So was the Legacy series, hell, even Conquest & Defenders of the Realm were better than this. Acting was horrible, plot was horrible, low budget, cheaply made movie. The only good thing about this movie was Joe Taslim, if they make a sequel, which would be shocking since this first one was so bad, Taslim needs to come back as Noob Saibot. Kano was okay but he died, and Johnny Cage was teased for the sequel. I can't get over how bad this movie was overall. It's very hurtful. Thank you Warner Brothers! Expand

Game-based movies have improved quite a bit recently. On the one hand, it is still not a masterpiece. So I'm for? I didn't know whether to look forward to it or not, but I tried the film anyway. The very first 7 minutes, which were already released on the Internet before the movie came out, will draw you into the action. It's like John Wick. Not much is expected and we will immediately get tons of violence, which are delicious, but here and there I found CGI a little worse, but otherwise the action scenes flawless. Immediately, we find ourselves from the world of Mortal Kombat on planet Earth, which caused me to feel bad, because I was afraid that the whole film would be from our world and that we would get the opportunity to look into the world of Mortal Kombat at the end, but I can reassure you that this is not the case. You will enjoy Mortal Kombat world enough here, although most of the film takes place in the same place, where several will take place, but I will no longer deal with spoilers. The main characters have not grown very close to my heart, but they are not bad. In short, it's just not my cup of coffee. Quite a few messages fall to laugh. I would compare it a little to the Rangers of the Galaxy. I repeat a little. I don't mean the characters, but the jokes that come here and there. Well, since I didn't have to have characters here, I was quite afraid of how it would develop. Fortunately, everything turned out well. The action, as I already mentioned supr, and I enjoyed the final battle, where there was also a smaller revelation, which I will not reveal again, but I will only say that it is great and makes sense. In short, I want to say that the end didn't save it, but it definitely helped the film a lot. Overall, a good film for me, which I recommend, but probably only to fans of the game series. Expand

My review for mortal kombat (No spoilers) The good : the characters were amazing Kano was hilarious, Sonya was a badass, Kung Lao and liu kang were an amazing duo, bi-Han was an amazing villain, and scorpion was awesome New characters :My review for mortal kombat (No spoilers) The good : the characters were amazing Kano was hilarious, Sonya was a badass, Kung Lao and liu kang were an amazing duo, bi-Han was an amazing villain, and scorpion was awesome New characters : creating a new character with Cole young was risky but it paid off he was amazing in this movie and I can’t wait to see more The action: when you make a mortal kombat movie the most important thing is the fighting and fatalities and it was brutal it felt like I was watching gameplay of mk 11 The pacing: the pacing was absolutely excellent The bad : the characters Raiden : In the games raiden is wise and optimistic in this he acts like a grumpy old man that doesn’t care
Shang Tsung: Shang tsung is one of the best characters in the game in this movie he was annoying and cringed to watch Mileena : mileena was not needed at all she was useless I felt like they throwed her in the movie for no reason at all
In summary this movie exceeded my expectations and definitely live up to the games it was amazing 9/10 And that’s how you do a video game movie Paul ws Anderson and Mila jovochich

The character is poorly written and trying to interweave his story with established characters from the franchise just doesn't work. I spent much of the movie looking forward to the moments where Lewis Tan isn't speaking. Another issue I had was the tonal shift any time Kabal is on screen. While I highly enjoyed his presence, every time the film would put focus on him it was like watching the movie shift into parody territory and it can feel jarring at times. The fight scenes are where the film shines brightest just as it should be. Aside from Scorpion and Sub-Zero's fights, Liu Kang's fight with Kabal was my favorite. The film is by no means perfect, some of the CGI is janky as hell, especially the close up shots of Goro and Jax's arms. But overall it is pretty good for what it is. Anyone expecting Shakespeare here clearly has never played a MK game in their life. We came for the fights and the gore. The film absolutely delivered there. Grab some popcorn, sit down, turn your brain off, and just enjoy the ride. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay where to begin I was lucky enough to watch it with my friends because he had HBO max pro tip don't watch it in theaters. If ACTUALLY play mortal kombat or know any lore throw it out the window because the name of characters is mostly what they stick to. I'll skip the beginning because after I saw the new guy Cole I wanted to stop watching it and so did my friends. After the horrible forcing new lore in you get more Cole a guy that is not a good or decent fighter and his useless family besides his daughters bracelet besides that bracelet nothing matters more on that later. Jax shows up shows birthmark same as Cole useless new lore and I can't keep going it's that bad. I'll just list the bad it's a remake that barely follows the original lore. Characters don't follow the time line and are forced in. Important characters are killed early ruining major events for the future. Cole goes from the worst fighter to killing Goro with ease thanks to a bracelet power up moment freaking Goro! Mileena is there first but not Kitana! Wtf how is Mileena there but not the original how do you put the clone that was made after her appearance and not Kitana? Nothing is mentioned on her lore too.Everyone powers up at the last part and beat the same enemies that destroyed them. Forgot that Kitana is Asian and Mileena is a clone of Kitana so sorry to say it but watch Kitana be in the second part (If the movie doesn't bomb) be played by a Asian actress and leave you thinking why is Mileena you know. The worst part is the absolute destruction of the lore of this series. If you ever played even one you'll know something is wrong at the start. This movie is not for fans of Mortal Kombat that know even a little lore It's for those people that don't know anything about it and even then they'll think really this has stacks of games made with this horrible story? You want a movie to watch? Go watch Demon slayer it was sold out when I went and Mortal Kombat was empty. Seriously want the news say Mortal Kombat was first in the box office...besides Demon Slayer that earned more than they'll make with this horrible movie and it's sequel and what they got paid combined! There's a reason why people love Japanese media it's good and doesn't have woke crap and follows the lore! I'd watch Demon Slayer the whole Saturday all showings than watch this horrible movie for 10 minutes. Don't believe anyone who says they know Mortal Kombat and like the movie that's not a fan it's freaking garbage. Expand

I will admit, the whole movie seemed a bit rushed. There didn't seem to be much character progression even though the cast fit the characters perfectly, apart from the over theatrical Liu Kang.

But in all honestly, it was great fun to watch and it clearly has huge potential, given they listen to fan-feedback for a possible second movie. Just a little rough around the edges.

the movie was on my expectations of it, but the fight was too great, but in terms of plot it wasn't too good, the protagonist was too passive and fuzzy.

It's fun to watch, but I would say the movie could get a better direction and casting. What probably appeals to MK fans, is the gore, finishing moves, and special effects, but that's a given, considering the advancement in the sfx. The storyIt's fun to watch, but I would say the movie could get a better direction and casting. What probably appeals to MK fans, is the gore, finishing moves, and special effects, but that's a given, considering the advancement in the sfx. The story itself is decent, logical enough for a videogame plot. With the exception of a few characters like Hanzo, Bi Han, Kano and Shang Tsung, acting is abysmal. The rests feel like a B movie actors, and the bad script surely doesn't help. Not sure why they picked Simon McQuoid to direct a fighting movie such as this, and it shows. The only good fighting sequence is shown at the first seven minutes (available in youtube). They underutilize of having Joe Taslim here, because we know what he's capable of, given the right fight choreography. Most of the other actors seems like they need to train another year to make the fight sequence believable. And for god sake, couldn't they use camera trick to make the movement seems faster like kungfu flick? They move hella slow for chosen warriors. All in all I so wish this would be a hit, commercially and critically. Now I'm not so sure. Expand

If you are an MK fan and haven't seen this yet, why are you reading a review? JUST GO SEE THIS! But to all the non-MK fans who are considering this, please understand that overall Critic Review scores are never going to be forgiving to a movie like this..

It has a feverish action-packed pace, and a ton of characters. So naturally, a critic is going to be disappointed that the character development can fall a little behind. But no time is wasted, and every character felt unique and fully-realized, and likeable. There are a couple characters that are laugh-out-loud funny, others that are just flat out cool/swaggy/flashy/fun, some even scary. This is a FUN thrill ride that everyone should give a chance to. This is not some awful Fantastic Four remake, but it also doesn't have the luxury of having every character get their own origin movie, so you have to just jump on the ride and enjoy. If you like imaginative worlds, violent, heart-pumping action, and memorable superpowered characters, this truly does an amazing job of balancing all of this with just enough plot and character development to glue it all together.

Please don't look too much into critic reviews, this just isn't an Oscar-winning drama or artistic marvel, it's an imaginative, rated R, bad a**, stylistic, violent, fun, action thrill ride in the vein of a Snyder's Watchmen, or Dredd, or Deadpool. All Mortal Kombat fans should be watching this 20 times over, and if you like Sci-fi/Fantasy and martial arts and a wide range of imaginative characters duking it out with everything on the line, this may be the beginning of a lifelong journey for you too.

Support this film because Sub-Zero is signed up for 4 more sequels (that's right, 4!) if it does well! Thank you so much to the directors, writers, actors and everyone who was responsible for this film that was so lovingly made with the source material put above all else!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh boy... What a let down after the first 7 minutes.. instead of boring you with a long description here are quick hitters: Earth's greatest champion fighters suck at fighting, Joe Taslim is one of the greatest martial artists of our time and he was Nerfed, speaking of Nerfed Lui Kang, Kung Lao, Mileena, Reptile, Goro(???!) All were reduced to a minor version of themselves. Humor forced at times, but Kano was pretty darn hilarious.Tone is all over the place and the writing will need to get drastically better for this franchise to have a fighting chance! Expand
