Blood is the carrot they're trying to use to entice fans into this overboring and unfaithful adaptation to one of the best game franchises ever. The writing, (specifically the dialogue and plot lines) are so bad that I could have done better writing the whole movie plot myself in 3 hours. It’s almost as if they made a concerted effort to write the worst story they could.
The acting is some of the worst I’ve seen in the past 2 years, but they can hardly be blamed considering the material they had to work with. The cheesiest, most cringeworthy dialogue imaginable with noticeable plot holes and oversights that would have only required 10 seconds of critical thought to fix. This happens every 5 minutes of the film. I’ll just say that the movie showed a couple signs for potential brilliance, but desperately needed an actual writer and director. This was offensive to me as an MK fan.

Не понимаю недовольства некоторых людей, которые ругают фильм за плохую графику, отсутствие турнира, короткие драки и тд. Конечно, это ваше мнение, но подождите, это только начало. Дальше - больше! The script is laughable, and the actors involved are doing their best with what they are given. Worst of all, there is no actual final battle. Shang Tsung parades around a la Liz Taylor from AHS, and little else. Halfway through, you just want it to end.

With Mortal Kombat however there was still some ground left to be covered. Namely, the addition of blood and guts in order to be more faithful to the video games. So when I heard the property was going to be resurrected on the big screen with a liberating R-rating I was completely onboard and must say that the added brutality does lead to a lot of exciting fight scenes. Still, I'd be hard-pressed to call this is better than the 1995 original, and that's due to some pacing issues.

Say what you will about the Paul W.S. Anderson film, but the action came front and center there as it should have. Here though, after some exciting fights in the beginning we are treated to a middle section that takes too much time explaining the mythology of the tournament and emphasizes training montages designed to flesh out protagonist Cole Young for the audience, before reaching the final act that somewhat rushes through what should have been the most exciting battles and culminates in an anti-climactic, "wait for the sequel" ending. Bit of a bummer for those of us who just wanted to see nothing more than a bunch of fantastical warriors beat the crap out of and kill each other in gory ways the entire time.

As for Young, the film exclusive original character has been a point of controversy for some time now. Many fans have pointed out how his role in the story could have easily been filled by Johnny Cage who is actually from the source material, and viewed his inclusion as nothing more than another case of Hollywood unnecessarily changing elements from the games. Something that has led to the majority of video game adaptations falling short in the past. Personally, I understand why he was created, as he serves as more relatable proxy to introduce newcomers to the world of Mortal Kombat than a loudmouth movie star who would have spent the whole time hitting on Sonya Blade anyways would have been. Plus, they already had Kano as the comic relief. It doesn't help that Cole is about as interesting as a block of wood though and that Lewis Tan is responsible for most of the worst dialog and acting. If they find a way to not bring him back for the sequel I won't complain.

Writing woes aside though this was still a really good time. It does a respectable job of portraying fan-favorite characters (Mileena is questionable...) to the point I was even a little sad when some of them died. The action is also very fun and suitably grisly. Showing that, while these things still aren't getting the best reviews from professional critics, the video game movie curse has definitely come to an end. At least in terms of providing entertaining experiences that can be enjoyed by wider audiences that is.

Didn't use the original theme song once (Instant 2 off the score), the actors weren't comparable to the originals, no johnny cage, and the actor who played kano got a back injury afterwards due to him carrying the entire film.

Really big pacing issues, why was Jax even in it? Same for the teeth chick and whoever the 'chosen one' was. Christopher Lambert as Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung in the originals were easily a thousand times better than their counter-parts in the new movie. They should have at least brought a scottish guy back for Raiden or something instead of whoever the pudgy guy they had as him was. Both Lambert and Tagaway knew exactly what type of movie they were in and they hammed it up perfectly. The new Tsung and Raiden are always serious, all the time. It falls flat, like their acting, and just like the movie itself. Oh, and the new Liu Kang or however you spell it was terrible compared to the original actor as well.

Sub Zero and Kano stole what little there was of the movie worth stealing.

Mainly because those making them understood the game was over the top and somewhat silly. They didn't try to make them serious or attempt to create something with aspirations beyond what the source material gave them.

However, this MK reboot does try to take itself somewhat seriously and because it's a film designed to appeal to Millennials it's so 'woke' to be unintentionally funny on too many occasions.

The plot bears no real resemblance to the one set out in the original games, instead introducing a new central character, with a backstory that exists just in this film. All the other characters fall from the roster of the MK game series, some more familiar to gamers than others. Sub-Zero is now the main villain, going off on an initial mission to kill the Earth Realm fighters before actual Mortal Kombat begins. Then we get the other bad guys popping up and Shang Tsung basically saying the rules don't apply, so up yours Raiden...

Unfortunately, despite there being a lot of fight scenes in the film, none are choreographed very well. Throw in far too many cuts, zooms, pans, dolly shots, etc as the fights are going on, and you can't really tell what is happening.

Everything else about the film is just 'meh'. The CGI, cinematography, visuals, acting, soundtrack... All just average, with nothing to really discuss.

But as a martial arts action film, it is pretty terrible!

The story was basically non-existent and partially abandoned halfway through the movie. There was no tournament. There was lackluster combat. The mythology behind the mortal kombat was poorly planned out. It was made to be this "tradition" but the heroes and villains just kept running into each other. The plot and story have potential but they keep bringing in politics and horrible actors, directors, and producers! To give you an idea of the politics, they replace Johnny Cage in the first movie because they didn't want a white man being "the hero" or the main protagonist. It is nonsensical anyway, as it was Liu Kang that was supposed to be the savior! But they needed the white man to be an evil villain (Kano) instead. I'm so tired of the leftist bs in movies and in games. Just make a good god-damn movie, leave bs politics and race out of it! Obviously, rated R for lots of reasons. I think they overdid it with the language, but the blood makes sense for the MK franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you came into this movie expecting it to win awards, be profound, or to see an American film have fight choreography on levels similar to The Raid... there's nothing "wrong" with that, however I'd recommend re-evaluating your expectations so you can have more fun movie-watching. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Joe Taslim steals the show as Sub-zero. Ludi Lin, Max Huang, and Hiroyuki Sanada are all excellent, especially considering they each had limited screen time. Most other characters are fairly forgettable. Josh Lawson as Kano was about 60/40 hit or miss and could get a bit irritating. I loved all the references to the games. The opening scene is absolutely fantastic. The final fight is a lot of fun as well, but not on the same level as the opening scene. For anyone complaining that "they don't actually fight in a tournament," I think that's a little petty. The final act of the movie is very much tournament style fighting and reminiscent of the source material. Understandably, the minds behind the film understand that they can't just keep making movies about another tournament and another tournament and another. I like the idea of introducing the characters and mythology first, trying to make that film as audience pleasing as possible, so you can come back and do the tournament in a later film. Expand

If you want to watch a film that's fun, take it for a ride. If you are looking for Oscar material, go somewhere else. But on a whole, it was a blast.

My one criticism of the film is it might have been too fast paced for the plot at a few points, and might have worked better with a couple more minutes to breathe in some areas, but it's a really small complaint from me.

The use of teleports was ridiculous.

The only redeeming parts of the film were some funny Kano quips, and the ninjas. Should have just made a film for the ninjas.

Maybe I’m biased where I’ve been a long time fan of the games but it makes zero sense why people are applauding this and give it a ten. The fighting is okay, not great but okay. I loved sub zero and Scorpion especially the actors but the story was such trash it was like the director could not decide what storyline to go with and went with a dual story plot which seems like a poor choice when it’s obvious they had a low budget. I had to force myself to watch this from beginning to end. Messed up my boy raiden and made him a douche. Also, not a fan of the new cole character. Pointless character really and just forgettable. Fans of the series just stick to the games. Hopefully if there’s a sequel we’ll get a larger budget, better writers and a director who knows what their doing and isn’t focused on SJW politics as well. Expand

It feels like its 80% action scenes jumping from one to the next. As much as I enjoy tons of action, some of that could have been cut down to help with the story which was very weak and at times completely nonsensical even for MK standards. When it comes to characters, everybody got decent screen time for their fights though some not as much as others but all of the main characters were extremely underpowered in this movie including those that should be far stronger and the bad guys are practically all jobbers with nothing going for them besides having their names given for context even though they should be more important down the line. Speaking of characters, I actually did like our new protagonist Cole. I feel if he is included in an MK game in the future, he might be appreciated more but as it stands I still wish he was not in the movie and instead was another character that people do know. Overall though, I did enjoy watching the movie and would watch again and definitely want to see a sequel that improves on it. Expand

Yes, the music could be better.
Yes, Cole is not a great main character.
But I dont really know what people expected from a cringy IP in the first place? A masterwork of art and acting? Please... Its action. Stupid, unrealistic and brainless action!
For todays standards this is a very good brainless flick, that simply entertains through good action, in the likes that you havent seen since the 90s.
Also it has almost no political crap in it, which gives it quite a few plus points. But it doesnt get along completely without it. Mileena is such a thing. She looks nothing like the original character (not even the same ethnicity) and has a body shape that makes her fit better into a Weight Watchers commercial. She also gets dealt with rather effortless. Other than that its really well made and how those fighters got their powers and other abilities/features is also more or less well explained.
I am excited for a sequel!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting Oscar material here, but even for a Mortal Kombat movie the wrtting was terrible. I don't care what the haters say, the first Mortal Kombat movie is to this day one of the best video game adaptations and it mops the floor with this trash when it comes to characters, build up and pay off. This new movie seems like a 12 year old, who doesn't understand pacing or story structure, came up with the script.

First off, I am baffled by the choice of main protagonist. I admit, I haven't played a MK game in the last 15 years or so and I am not familiar with the lore and all the new characters, so at first I thought this is a character from the game's roaster. But no, aparently he is an original character for this movie and I don't get why they went with this boring character. Liu Kang and Kung Lao would have been a much better choice of protagonists and if they wanted an audience-insert they already had Kano(which btw is the only decently written and acted character here). Hell, Kano would have been the only character who could have gotten an actual redemption arc and payoff but at the end the writters thought it would be so much better to revert him to being a villain and get a lame demise. The rest of the characters are also one dimensional and boring and I don't think there is a single one that has any development by the end. Also, the acting is terrible. I didn't expect them to get DiCaprio for a fckn Mortal Kombat movie, but it would have been nice if the acting wouldn't have been bellow direct to DVD standards.

As far as action goes however, it's fine, and I guess that's the most important. It's much more gory than the 1995 movie and the fatalities are actually quite cool, but the action suffers from any type of build up. Bad guys are introduced, they fight the main characters, then they fight a second time and lose. The movie makes a point of not using a tournament format(yeah, who would want that in a fantasy martial arts movie) but it would have actually benefited more for building up tension. And lastly, the music sucks. Say what you want about the 1995 movie, but its soundtrack was boss and even people who don't know of the series at least know of the main theme. They use it here at the end, but other than that the soundtrack is very generic and there's nothing to pump you up for the fights.

At the end, this is probably a bit above Annihilation, but there were some things even that movie did better. Watch it only if you are a huge fan of the series or if you have time and braincells to burn.

Whatever your opinion of that movie was, it will probably be the same as this one. To me, the two movies are incredibly similar in tone and structure: ridiculous concepts that try to play it serious. The script is the biggest letdown here. Much like the power rangers movie, instead of just trying to tell a fun and engaging story, they decided to lay the foundation for a new franchise. And much like that movie, this translates to one long training montage littered will dull exposition to hastily build a universe. What's that rule about storytelling? Show don't tell? Just build a good story and let the universe emerge out of that. This movie is trying to be a "beginners guide" to mortal kombat when really it just needed a simple character story to get things moving. Think "Iron Man". We only got a teaser for the wider universe at the end, the rest of it was just about Tony Stark. So, while some visuals were impressive, ultimately this is just a really dull movie. I look forward to the next reboot. Expand

The film essentially has a gear of actors taken as if directly from the benches of the acting school and thrown into the arena of the MK circus, with the exception of Hiroyuki Sanada. This film gives you "fatality" due to the lack of crowds, and everything happens predictably at all times, between the same interlocutors, like a chess game with 2 characters (good and bad) and a few pawns, on the board. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mortal Kombat was amazing, I loved it so much. I loved how they didn't skimp on the violence and gore and how they perfectly mixed it with comedic moments also how they used iconic lines and moves from the games. The writing especially the screenplay was superb. The visual effects were remarkable especially Sub-Zero's powers, Liu's powers, Scorpion's Kunai, Milenna's powers, Jax's arms, Syzoth (Reptile), Raiden's powers, Cole's powers, Nitara's wings, Kung's hat, Goro, Sonya's powers, and Kano's powers. The acting was stupendous especially from Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Sisi Stringer, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Max Huang, Ludi Lin, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Tadanobu Asano, and Damon Herriman. The makeup and hairstyling was phenomenal especially on Sisi Stringer, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Mel Jarnson, Max Huang, Jessica McNamee, and Lewis Tan. The costumes were outstanding especially ones wore by Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Max Huang, Sisi Stringer, Joe Taslim, Chin Han, Ludi Lin, Lewis Tan, Daniel Nelson, Mel Jarnson, and Josh Lawson. The sets were spectacular. The score was also great. To me this was an A+ movie. Expand
