Like a Marvel flick, but more gory. Great action scenes. Great one liners. Just wished they brought Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung

The trailer certainly does not disappoint with the violence. If you enjoy the series of the same name, are a gore hound, disappointed with the older movies, or have heard of the games and want to start somewhere, then this movie might appeal to you. It brings in some old-school fatalities from the older Mortal Kombat games, and adds a new one to the mix. The story might be a little disappointing but it can appeal to certain others. The music is definitely some of the best you can ever hear. Action sequences? Awesome! Overall, I would definitely recommend the movie to you. I give it a 10/10, an A+, an 5 stars, and a thumbs up. Actually, I'll give it TWO thumbs up. I definitely recommend you check it out! Expand

Except for the Sub-Zero VS Scorption backstory and fight, the movie is straight up junk to me. Visual effects are great, fatalities are cool so I guess fans will be served. Characters, dialogues and locations are the problem. Characters are empty shells with words coming out of their mouths. The script is made out of corny and cheesy stuff. Locations are so bad and so repetitive. It's unbelievable. If you like violence and entertainment related to MK, you're probably gonna like it somehow. However, the general viewer may not understand certain themes or references that occur in the film. The one thing that the film delivers on for all audiences are the spectacular and gory fatalities. The fighting throughout the movie is relatively tame and similar to a regular Marvel Movie in terms of how violent it is (apart from the opening scene), it's only when a fatality happens that the film uses its rating to its full potential. Some fans may find this disappointing but the fatalities should definitely make up for this.

Overall, Mortal Kombat is especially great for fans and its also enjoyable for general audiences even if some stuff may be hard to understand as well as the occasional corny dialogue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mortal Kombat definitely tries to provide a storyline similar but at the same time they also try and get themselves away from the original Mortal Kombat storyline. First of all, the action is AMAZING. While it didn't exactly exceed my expectations, my expectation for the action was very high. Each character keeps their moves from the games, so its great to see them come back and with an actual budget unlike the 1995 movie. The kills in this movie are awesome as well, and to me the action is just the highlight of this movie. I also loved how faithful the kills stayed to the characters fatalities, like how Kung Lao killing Nitara is just like Lao's fatality in the game, and I love that. However as most people complain about, the plot is too different. Instead of Shang Tsung hosting a tournament, as Earth realm has to choose its best to keep their planet from being invaded by the Outworld, the tournament never even happens...its just a battle of who can kill whos champions before the tournament even starts. While this was obviously done to avoid Earth realms champions dying (other than Lao), it can still disappoint you at times. The movie does characters and casting VERY well though, the actors are fantastic and make you interested in them at times. They also change the characters up very well. Kano as most people say is the best character in the movie, or its just me. Kano will make you laugh, and its hard not to laugh at his lines. However I really wished that his death was done better, instead of being stabbed by something just like that. Blade is better, and compared to the 1995 movie Sub-Zero is given WAYYYY more time and is an entertaining villain in his fights. While Scorpion is only in for the first part (and eventually comes back to fight and kill Sub-Zero), hes still a solid character and I love his actor. But the obvious problem everyone will point out is Cole Young, who shares heritage with Sub-Zero. I thought they were going to have him turn into Scorpion or some **** but he just comes off as bland as times, like he's the main character in some Wattpad fan-fiction, as much as I hate saying it, because his weapons are cool as all hell. I'd say characters are an upgrade from the 1995 movie, costume design for SURE...but its hard to compare a big-budget film to a film like 1995 MK.

Finally I'd just give Mortal Kombat an 8/10. It's the start of a series of movies, and I think its a solid start. While there are some flaws with the plot, the soundtrack being a bit TOO forgettable, its not a bad movie. And I recommend it to action and fans of blood.

The opening sequence was extremely boring, and if you don't know the stories told from the games, you will likely be COMPLETELY lost during this movie.

I would even go as far to suggest that MK2 from 1997 could be a better film, especially if edited or remastered for today's standards. As with most folks, Kano became the best part of the film! He was likeable, but I do get tired of the schtick from his character. I was always hoping he'd be a bit more serious, a better natural fighter, but I liked seeing his anger in the film. That's the Kano I grew up with.

Kung Lao was a throwaway character, Shang Tsung, who should have been one of the most memorable characters, was completely uninteresting, and possibly the worst part of the film!

I don't know. This movie wasn't as hard for me to get through as those four ridiculously overrated Avengers films (where all people did was shoot colors from their eyes and hands), but it was almost below mediocre, at best.

I hope the second one has more heart, more of what made the 1995 original SO good.

John Lawson steals every scene he is in as Kano. He is hilarious and genuinely some of the best parts of Mortal Kombat (2021). Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Jessica McNamee as Sonya is all also great casting as they resemble the characters from the game perfectly. Tadanobu Asano is very majestic as Lord Raiden and Chin Han is very sinister as Shang Tsung. I also really appreciate having an Asian be the main character with Lewis Tan as Cole Young. It's great that the director, Simon McQuoid, is giving Asians more representation in mainstream media and I can appreciate that.

A lot of video game movies don't work because it is clear the director and writers are not fans of the respective game. However, this is not the case here and this clearly shows within the movie. They have authentic casting so characters that were Asian in the game are played by Asians in the movie, characters act and resemble their game counterparts, gruesome fatalities and a lot of game references. Additionally, the first 10 minutes is amazing and is such a great start to the movie. The last 15 minutes of the movie is also really good which is down to the fact that any scene with Sub-Zero and Scorpion is great. The score by Benjamin Wallfisch is also quite good at times when orchestral instruments are used. However, sometimes the score can be quite odd such as when electronic sounds are used in the 17th-century scene which doesn't sound right. Furthermore, the editing of certain scenes is quite bad. Despite casting an actual martial artist who can fight, the director still uses a lot of quick cuts in fight scenes that just ruin it. It even happens during sparring fights which just makes it very disorienting. The most jarring editing comes around the middle where multiple fights are occurring with different characters and the scene just keeps constantly swapping between all of them. Instead of just focusing on one fight at a time which would result in a more pleasant experience. On that note, the action scenes not concerning Sub Zero or Scorpion lack a lot of brutality, grit and damage. You don't feel like the characters are getting hurt enough as during fights it feels like they are just slapping each other about. Where are the broken bones, bruises or physical impact in these fights?

Another major flaw is the main lead Cole Young as he is very bland and uninteresting. The only thing about his character is he a chosen one and he has a family that he cares about. It's boring. The supporting characters are not that great either since there are way too many characters and not enough time exploring them. Liu Kang and Kung Lao appear but are pretty much just the strong yet generic Asian guys. Jax and Sonya are just initially there to get the plot moving and then fight some people which is all there is to them. Mileena, Goro and Kabal are in the movie but are just there to be fodder for the heroes. We get absolutely no information about them, not even an explanation on why Kabal has super speed. Raiden is a good powerful guy and Shang Tsung is a bad powerful guy. Both barely appear and when they do it is when the plot needs teleporting stuff.

MINOR SPOILERS HERE
Following that, the story is a mess. It starts in the 17th century with Scorpion and Sub Zero. Scorpion's family gets murdered and he dies as well but goes to hell. However, his thirst for vengeance for his family being murdered by Sub Zero will bring him out of hell and that alone is an interesting story. Such a shame we ignore that and just focus on boring Cole Young. The marketing plays up Scorpion's role but he is only at the beginning and the end. He also just randomly appears at the end with little to no explanation. It's very baffling even to me, a Mortal Kombat fan. Throughout Mortal Kombat (2021) there is a lot of build-up for this tournament. It feels like the movie will conclude with the tournament but it does not which is kind of annoying. They spend two-thirds of the movie leading to it but then decide in the 3rd act just to forget about it.

Overall, Mortal Kombat (2021) does a lot of right in satisfying fans but doesn't do enough to bring new people in. It feels like they were just ticking boxes instead of making a cohesive and good movie in general. Mortal Kombat has great characters which are why the movie should've just focused on one of them instead of just bringing in as many characters as they could. The movie has a fair amount of things better than the 1995 version but a fair amount that isn't as well. The only conclusion that I got out of it was that at least it was way better than Mortal Kombat Annihilation and honestly that is a huge win in my book.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay where to begin I was lucky enough to watch it with my friends because he had HBO max pro tip don't watch it in theaters. If ACTUALLY play mortal kombat or know any lore throw it out the window because the name of characters is mostly what they stick to. I'll skip the beginning because after I saw the new guy Cole I wanted to stop watching it and so did my friends. After the horrible forcing new lore in you get more Cole a guy that is not a good or decent fighter and his useless family besides his daughters bracelet besides that bracelet nothing matters more on that later. Jax shows up shows birthmark same as Cole useless new lore and I can't keep going it's that bad. I'll just list the bad it's a remake that barely follows the original lore. Characters don't follow the time line and are forced in. Important characters are killed early ruining major events for the future. Cole goes from the worst fighter to killing Goro with ease thanks to a bracelet power up moment freaking Goro! Mileena is there first but not Kitana! Wtf how is Mileena there but not the original how do you put the clone that was made after her appearance and not Kitana? Nothing is mentioned on her lore too.Everyone powers up at the last part and beat the same enemies that destroyed them. Forgot that Kitana is Asian and Mileena is a clone of Kitana so sorry to say it but watch Kitana be in the second part (If the movie doesn't bomb) be played by a Asian actress and leave you thinking why is Mileena you know. The worst part is the absolute destruction of the lore of this series. If you ever played even one you'll know something is wrong at the start. This movie is not for fans of Mortal Kombat that know even a little lore It's for those people that don't know anything about it and even then they'll think really this has stacks of games made with this horrible story? You want a movie to watch? Go watch Demon slayer it was sold out when I went and Mortal Kombat was empty. Seriously want the news say Mortal Kombat was first in the box office...besides Demon Slayer that earned more than they'll make with this horrible movie and it's sequel and what they got paid combined! There's a reason why people love Japanese media it's good and doesn't have woke crap and follows the lore! I'd watch Demon Slayer the whole Saturday all showings than watch this horrible movie for 10 minutes. Don't believe anyone who says they know Mortal Kombat and like the movie that's not a fan it's freaking garbage. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie has a good story line but every scenes comes too quickly without proper introductions and suspenses.. the fighting technics are way below expectations... characters are portrait in a poor manners and also do not fit in like the best for their roles( like character Liu kang is way too small and play a weak role as in the original mortal Kombat back in 1996.. fighting too weak and not a good fit. ). Custom is quick good but fighting technics are weak.. only character Sub Zero plays a good fighting technics..i really think there should be something more better than this. Please fix this because it seems like a mess and nothing seems right to me after i watched it. it's far below my expectations. Fix in good and smart characters... Let there be good fighting vibes like putting more energy to fights makes it real.. extend each scene with a good conversations and create in more suspense...... I believe this movie could be much more better when it's is on tv series....i will advice you look at the TV series called 'Warrior' take more fighting vibes from it and make the fighting more better and full of energy Expand

With Mortal Kombat however there was still some ground left to be covered. Namely, the addition of blood and guts in order to be more faithful to the video games. So when I heard the property was going to be resurrected on the big screen with a liberating R-rating I was completely onboard and must say that the added brutality does lead to a lot of exciting fight scenes. Still, I'd be hard-pressed to call this is better than the 1995 original, and that's due to some pacing issues.

Say what you will about the Paul W.S. Anderson film, but the action came front and center there as it should have. Here though, after some exciting fights in the beginning we are treated to a middle section that takes too much time explaining the mythology of the tournament and emphasizes training montages designed to flesh out protagonist Cole Young for the audience, before reaching the final act that somewhat rushes through what should have been the most exciting battles and culminates in an anti-climactic, "wait for the sequel" ending. Bit of a bummer for those of us who just wanted to see nothing more than a bunch of fantastical warriors beat the crap out of and kill each other in gory ways the entire time.

As for Young, the film exclusive original character has been a point of controversy for some time now. Many fans have pointed out how his role in the story could have easily been filled by Johnny Cage who is actually from the source material, and viewed his inclusion as nothing more than another case of Hollywood unnecessarily changing elements from the games. Something that has led to the majority of video game adaptations falling short in the past. Personally, I understand why he was created, as he serves as more relatable proxy to introduce newcomers to the world of Mortal Kombat than a loudmouth movie star who would have spent the whole time hitting on Sonya Blade anyways would have been. Plus, they already had Kano as the comic relief. It doesn't help that Cole is about as interesting as a block of wood though and that Lewis Tan is responsible for most of the worst dialog and acting. If they find a way to not bring him back for the sequel I won't complain.

Writing woes aside though this was still a really good time. It does a respectable job of portraying fan-favorite characters (Mileena is questionable...) to the point I was even a little sad when some of them died. The action is also very fun and suitably grisly. Showing that, while these things still aren't getting the best reviews from professional critics, the video game movie curse has definitely come to an end. At least in terms of providing entertaining experiences that can be enjoyed by wider audiences that is.

The use of teleports was ridiculous.

The only redeeming parts of the film were some funny Kano quips, and the ninjas. Should have just made a film for the ninjas.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you wonder if there's something crucially innovative or more striking in this film, in relation to the video game and the previous films, well there isn't. At least not in general terms.

Of course it is more ambitious, and of course it has a lot more budget, but Mortal Kombat makes childish mistakes trying to be more than it really is.
And that has a lot to do with the script, because the script is a tremendous mess for wanting to take itself too seriously. I wasn't expecting it to be a bit goofy or something like that, but when you have such one-dimensional and stiff performances, then the dialogues, motives, and confrontations that have nothing to do with punching, they feel and sound ridiculous.
The Arcana? What the hell was that? Yes it's true that this Mortal Kombat offers a lot of fan service.
The fights are not bad at all, and the gore is present. It does not increase anything, but it adds a visual punch, and this more than anything else is just another element to satisfy fans and people who enjoy watching action mixed with such violence.
Nothing wrong with it, but you have to accept that after a while it becomes too repetitive and empty.

And of course we must mention the fundamental issue of this film, and by which many will feel not only disappointed, but cheated.
There's no tournament. Just random fights where the main villain and the big good guy are recruiting their fighters.

If this was done with the intention of a sequel it's understood, more than anything by the business angle, but as a narrative decision? It was a huge mistake.
Mortal Kombat is precisely about that, and this movie takes it away from you.

Now that, if your thing is to have a fun time without demanding more, as you could've done with the previous films, which is completely fair, then surely you will find more attractive things in this daring, but ultimately failed reboot.

The story doesn't live up to the standards of the newer games, and at times the dialogue is awful. Some characters feel genuinely wasted, and the decision to center the story around a character who isn't even from the games is deeply confusing. The story still has some good ideas, and the action, especially towards the end is pretty good. That being said a lot of the movie feels sort of sloppy. With some scenes feeling completely unnecessary while others end just a little too soon. Not to mention some jarring cuts between scenes. Dialogue ranges from alright to awful. It's fun, especially if you like the games, but there is a lot of room for improvement, hopefully if there's a sequel they'll make those improvements. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My biggest issue was the incongruous tone. The opening and the rest of the movie felt entirely different from one another. The actors and their dialogue didn't match the mood - specifically the lighting and music, which weren't really doing them any favors. If the goal is to make a serious moment with a menacing monster, then stop lighting everything up like it's a scene from Mary Poppins. Make it dark... make the scene have some weight, give the character an edge of menace....just so many weird directorial choices that seemed to try and blend things together that it honestly came across as a mid-90s straight-to-tv teen movie.

The fatalities were fun and the fighting wasn't bad, but it definitely could have been filmed better - longer shots would have helped showcase the raw talent of the actors they chose. I've seen arguments that the script shouldn't have to be superb because it's a video game movie, and if people expected a good story then they're looking at the wrong film. I have a problem with that sentiment. Video game movies have been historically bad, but they don't have to be. Sure, the story is "two wizards gather their respective teams and face off for the fate of the world." ... but so is lord of the rings... and if the argument is that it's a fighting movie so there doesn't need to be a deep plot, then showcase the fighting; don't jump cut every 2 seconds. And realistically, for the fights to really shine, they needed far more character development. I know that's hard to do in a 2 hour movie, but that's why they don't need to try and rush through and cram as much as possible into the movie. They should take their time and tell a good, deliberate, focused story. If that means they can only get two or three characters in it, then fine. People will pay to see a good movie with a good story about those characters. Hell, people paid to see a movie where Tom hanks and a volleyball were the only real characters. You don't need to thrust in a dozen people and try to fit everything in at once. The worst part is, they obviously didn't even need to worry about everyone in this movie anyway, since we're not getting a tournament until next movie at the earliest. They could have REALLY spent time building a foundation so we cared, but opted for a shotgun approach.

As well, the "magic" they threw at us. I cant pinpoint why exactly, but wow did that rub me the wrong way. Magic-arm Jax was just such a big head shake from me I almost gave myself whiplash.

All of that notwithstanding, I will say that some of it was okay. I actually really liked Kanos character. I liked Not-Reptile more than I thought I would. I liked how Kung Lao was portrayed, although he went out because of dumb reasons (really, Liu threw a fireball at kano for talking.. can't muster up a little one to save your cousin?) And of course Scorpion and Sub Zero were really on point (the little bit that we saw them - another point of criticism). So yeah, I think the casting as a whole was honestly pretty decent, some things just felt off-putting. And the entire movie felt really rushed.

It was just a strange movie, overall. And not necessarily a pleasant one; it felt like something I'd watch on CW after The Flash or some other DC show. Really kinda disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't expecting Oscar material here, but even for a Mortal Kombat movie the wrtting was terrible. I don't care what the haters say, the first Mortal Kombat movie is to this day one of the best video game adaptations and it mops the floor with this trash when it comes to characters, build up and pay off. This new movie seems like a 12 year old, who doesn't understand pacing or story structure, came up with the script.

First off, I am baffled by the choice of main protagonist. I admit, I haven't played a MK game in the last 15 years or so and I am not familiar with the lore and all the new characters, so at first I thought this is a character from the game's roaster. But no, aparently he is an original character for this movie and I don't get why they went with this boring character. Liu Kang and Kung Lao would have been a much better choice of protagonists and if they wanted an audience-insert they already had Kano(which btw is the only decently written and acted character here). Hell, Kano would have been the only character who could have gotten an actual redemption arc and payoff but at the end the writters thought it would be so much better to revert him to being a villain and get a lame demise. The rest of the characters are also one dimensional and boring and I don't think there is a single one that has any development by the end. Also, the acting is terrible. I didn't expect them to get DiCaprio for a fckn Mortal Kombat movie, but it would have been nice if the acting wouldn't have been bellow direct to DVD standards.

As far as action goes however, it's fine, and I guess that's the most important. It's much more gory than the 1995 movie and the fatalities are actually quite cool, but the action suffers from any type of build up. Bad guys are introduced, they fight the main characters, then they fight a second time and lose. The movie makes a point of not using a tournament format(yeah, who would want that in a fantasy martial arts movie) but it would have actually benefited more for building up tension. And lastly, the music sucks. Say what you want about the 1995 movie, but its soundtrack was boss and even people who don't know of the series at least know of the main theme. They use it here at the end, but other than that the soundtrack is very generic and there's nothing to pump you up for the fights.

At the end, this is probably a bit above Annihilation, but there were some things even that movie did better. Watch it only if you are a huge fan of the series or if you have time and braincells to burn.

None of the jokes were funny and simply cringeworthy at times. My expectations were already low going in, but holy sh*t, this movie may be dumber than the 90s films. There is a scene where Jax tells the dude whose name I can't remember to go to a specific address in Gary, Indiana. The dude shows up to a damn boatyard with a cardboard sign taped to the fence with the exact address Jax gave written in f*cking sharpie. Also, Sonia Blade lives on a boatyard in Gary, Indiana? Of all the places they could've picked, why the hell did they choose Gary, Indiana? I could be here all day explaining why that makes zero sense at all.

The lack of general Mortal Kombat knowledge from the filmmakers is baffling, they played maybe 5 minutes of one game and went from there. If you're going to make an adaptation of something, at least learn more the baseline lore so you don't have to make sh*t up. They completely butchered all of the characters and they feel like caricatures. Especially Scorpion, why did you have to do that to my boy? Scorpion, who is arguably the strongest and most feared fighter in the realms, feels completely useless in this film. None of his brutality nor ferociousness is felt whatsoever in the 5 minutes he is in the movie. This is simply a terrible film adaptation.

Whatever your opinion of that movie was, it will probably be the same as this one. To me, the two movies are incredibly similar in tone and structure: ridiculous concepts that try to play it serious. The script is the biggest letdown here. Much like the power rangers movie, instead of just trying to tell a fun and engaging story, they decided to lay the foundation for a new franchise. And much like that movie, this translates to one long training montage littered will dull exposition to hastily build a universe. What's that rule about storytelling? Show don't tell? Just build a good story and let the universe emerge out of that. This movie is trying to be a "beginners guide" to mortal kombat when really it just needed a simple character story to get things moving. Think "Iron Man". We only got a teaser for the wider universe at the end, the rest of it was just about Tony Stark. So, while some visuals were impressive, ultimately this is just a really dull movie. I look forward to the next reboot. Expand

Not because the script was amazing, not because the acting was perfect, but because the movie is what it needs to be. It's cheesy at times, but I went to this film expecting something to be FUN. It was fun the entire way through, I enjoyed the characters, I liked the fight scenes, I really REALLY enjoyed how they handled Sub-Zero and Scorpion. Kano steals most of the scenes he's in. Liu Kang and Kung Lao were a lot of fun. Sonya was great.

If you want to watch a film that's fun, take it for a ride. If you are looking for Oscar material, go somewhere else. But on a whole, it was a blast.

My one criticism of the film is it might have been too fast paced for the plot at a few points, and might have worked better with a couple more minutes to breathe in some areas, but it's a really small complaint from me.

Really good graphics! Wish Kitana was in this one. The storyline was kind of cheesy and felt rushed but fighting scenes made up for it.

The movie had horrible character and costume design. Also strayed way too far from the canonical story of mortal kombat

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The fake blood, none stop digital effects drowning the fight scenes, corny story line, unnecessary vulgarity, Goro being out of contrast and bad acting just made the first installment a much better film. The characters signature moves didn't seem to captivate me enough and put me in that moment to reminisce the video game. Expand

The character is poorly written and trying to interweave his story with established characters from the franchise just doesn't work. I spent much of the movie looking forward to the moments where Lewis Tan isn't speaking. Another issue I had was the tonal shift any time Kabal is on screen. While I highly enjoyed his presence, every time the film would put focus on him it was like watching the movie shift into parody territory and it can feel jarring at times. The fight scenes are where the film shines brightest just as it should be. Aside from Scorpion and Sub-Zero's fights, Liu Kang's fight with Kabal was my favorite. The film is by no means perfect, some of the CGI is janky as hell, especially the close up shots of Goro and Jax's arms. But overall it is pretty good for what it is. Anyone expecting Shakespeare here clearly has never played a MK game in their life. We came for the fights and the gore. The film absolutely delivered there. Grab some popcorn, sit down, turn your brain off, and just enjoy the ride. Expand

First great game adaptation to a movie. I hope we get more of this. It's a new story with a low budget but with great image fight scenes and characterization.

It was underwhelming and cast was entirely forgettable with pretty bad writing throughout.

You may find it difficult to follow if your not into the games, that's your fault, not the movie. Having 18 different games in the franchise you should've played one of them by now... This is how a game-made-movie adaptation should've been from the beginning, throwing you right into the action. This will tickle the fancy of every MK lover. The inclusion of Cole is unobtrusive to the overall MK lore while remaining true to the core of the franchise. Kano was written in very well, and cast even better. I was also surprised to see the Scorpion / Sub Zero story almost completely carried over from "Scorpions Revenge" (that's another great watch for the MK buff). With how well this sticks to the game franchise, I'm expecting a sequel.

*Quasi Spoiler*
This was clearly written to have a sequel. It's kinda clear the writers didn't want to drag the movie on.

Raiden and Shang Tsung in particular didn't fit at all. Scorpion was great though, the actor playing him has a very commanding presence which fit very well. There are some fun fight scenes, it's pretty faithful to the franchise and some fun gory scenes. It's disappointing and not nearly as memorable as the original mortal kombat film though. I hope if they make more they can do better. It's a great franchise and deserves better. Expand
