I've gone to every review site in the hopes of being able to tell you that movie is amazing. I may be biased as a Mortal Kombat fan but even trying to look past that I generally can't see a flaw in this movie. Well beyond expectations, there were times where I was concerned the extreme nature of the movie would wear thin however it was consistently entertaining. Kano didn’t disappoint.

Why do I score it an 8? Because it amused me. Maybe nostalgia. You should go into this movie knowing what it is, a goofy movie about a handful of humans fighting monsters in a competition to save the world. It's not high art.

There are two major issues, Mortal Kombat never "officially" occurs and a stupid amount of content is shoved into the last thirty minutes of the movie. It definitely could have been improved, but it happily takes the throne of it's predecessors.… Expand

This movie is just bad. Entertainingly bad, but still bad. If you want to watch a mindless popcorn flick, I suggest this movie. If you’re looking a for a movie with an interesting story and deep characters, this isn’t for you.

Crige and budget. Suposed to have hired martial artists, but the fights are bad and the acting atrocious.. The director intentionallt made sure noe to use White men in ant herois roles , because hes racist, i guess. But the Irony is the wholeCrige and budget. Kano has no metal eye, Melina is just a joke, shes suposed to be eye catchingly sexy, and when she removes her face mask its a shockband forces you to confront your desires.. Overall good movie, most characters are ok, Kano carried a lot of the movie, they blew it with Raiden, the worst of all by a mile.

It was a fun start to what I hope to be a continued reboot. It's light on the back story, but has some of my favorite characters, some good and great fight scenes, and a bit of violence and gore...but what else would you expect from Mortal Kombat?

Overall I had doubts going into it, but it was a lot of fun for what it was, it definitely looked and felt like a Mortal Kombat movie, but my biggest problem with this movie is that it felt like a fan-film. But a super high budget fan-film.Overall I had doubts going into it, but it was a lot of fun for what it was, it definitely looked and felt like a Mortal Kombat movie, but my biggest problem with this movie is that it felt like a fan-film. But a super high budget fan-film. The second problem I have with this movie is that some characters don't get enough time to establish themselves.
But that's not to say that I didn't enjoy all of it, the production values are really up there, the cinematography looks beautiful, the script is fine, the story lays the foundation in a solid way, the performances are iconic enough to where I can see these characters come to life, and the fight scenes. Needless to say they are AMAZING. The blood and gore was awesome to look at.
In the end, I enjoyed this movie for what it was, and I hope the sequels build on what worked while removing what didn't… Expand

I went into this movie with an open opinion, but it has some problems, first why did they make up a new character that does not exist in any of the games big no no, especially to play the lead role, Coal Young is a nobody, and that is hisI went into this movie with an open opinion, but it has some problems, first why did they make up a new character that does not exist in any of the games big no no, especially to play the lead role, Coal Young is a nobody, and that is his special distinction as a character almost as if he is Yamcha from Dragon ball z, the guy is written to be a loser, but to the movies credit I will admit, Kano, Kabal, sub-zero, scorpion, were done well, but even they were lacking good back stories, the script lets even sub vs scorp down, I mean MK fans love violence and that is what you will see in the movie, mostly blood, but I would like to understand the motivations of the characters, and see their perspectives better brought to screen then what I saw in this movie, Kano and Kabal were the best thing about the movie acting wise, because they have dialog and use words and emotions, and have personality, I thought the fight between sub-zero and scorpion would have been the center of the movie, based on the trailer, but without a purpose or reason behind why sub-zero slayed scorpions family it seems more shallow and ultimately less interesting, a movie is supposed to make sense of these rich characters, and I wanted to see more tournament based environment/ and rules explained, like in the 1995 film, but we don't get that here, they just sort of fight anywhere and skip rules and plot setup, the movie is cartoony violent I will give it that but 3 stars is all I feel it's worth, the script was likely the culprit, and it skips too many crucial points of character development in favor of flashy stuff and not explaining, this movie needed a better script and someone that understands MK.… Expand

What an entertaining movie. As an MK fan growing up and playing the various iterations they finally did justice to the franchise. Acting was pretty average (hence the 9) but fight scenes and fatalities were awesome! Glad they going to make itWhat an entertaining movie. Odio con toda mi alma al personaje protagonista, cero carisma, normal que no aparezca en los videojuegos, a los cuales, disclaimer: no he jugado.
Por mi que hubiera sido hora y media de pelea entre Sub-Zero y Scorpion, los dos mejores personajes, sobre todo el primero, y los que mejores combates nos traen, porque recordemos, no todos los combates son buenos, sí la mayoría, pero no todos.
Justifican muchas cosas por la cara, el argumento es bastaaante malo, y el hilo argumental, el humor está mal mal medido, y la primera mitad, se hace bastante pesada.
Por lo visto es buena adaptación, y eso, en resumen: buenas coreografías de combate, sin duda lo mejor, y sobre todo las muertes y todo eso, una película pasable, depende de lo que busques.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are 2 types of Mortal Kombat fans: the fans of the lore and the fans of the gore. I like both. Making this a rated R film is the best thing ever happen in this movie. This is what Mortal Kombat should be. The action was solid but bloody, best thing in this movie. Some characters in this film are either likable to watch or very dry to listen to. Characters like Jax, Sub-Zero, Kabel, and Scorpion, are entertaining to watch. The one that carry this movie was Kano, acting how his character is portrayed in the video games. Sub-Zero was really threating in this film and Scorpion was good, although I wish he had more screen time and make it seem like his revenge matters.

Now, to the bad parts of this movie. The writing was pretty trash except the opening seen of Hanzo(Scorpion) vs. Bi-Han(Sub-Zero), making it seem like the only accurate story in this movie. This movie is a prequel for the actually Mortal Kombat tournament and I'm already not liking the idea of it. The main character, Cole, who is the new character to the Mortal Kombat universe is easily the most uninteresting generic character of this film. Every time I see him on screen, I just want to look away. Lui Kang, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Raiden, and other characters were dry to me. I didn't like the acting and I find each character not having potential of be recognized to me. Sonya Blade was a decent character, that's it.

Overall, is a bad movie but still entertaining to watch.… Expand

Came in with zero expectations and left the drive in theater quite happy with what I saw. Very good acting and interesting plot. Better than most action movies I’ve seen in the last 20 years. Just watch and have fun. Recommended.

Mortal Kombat starts out strong by actually introducing the audience to the feud between SubZero and Scorpion. The introductions of the other characters are also well done but the writers decided to go with an original character named Cole that wasn't seen before in any MK game. That fell flat. The character of Cole is rather bland, especially considering the fact that he is the descendant of such an iconic character as Scorpion. The fight scenes are a mixed bag. While they went all out on the gore, which is good and simply fits the franchise, the fighting feels too much like something we would see in a Marvel super hero movie. While some direct references to the games work rather well, others went way overboard. It gets just a bit too goofy when the fighters take the role of the MK game announcer and say "Fatalaty!" or "Flawless Victory!" multiple times during the movie. Overall, I would rate the movie as okay. It's watchable, it's entertaining, but it's nothing special.… Expand

I also just didn’t really care about the characters that much. Even if you have played the games, a lot of these characters aren’t given arcs and the ones that do have one, their conclusions don’t feel satisfying. The only thing that really kept me going was the fight scenes but it wasn’t because the choreography was cool, it was because I liked the use of blood. The Mortal Kombat games are very violent and this film keeps that element. The film is pretty brutal at points and I enjoyed that but nothing else stood out. The fight scene at the beginning was cool but I don’t remember any of the other fight scenes after that. A lot of them feel like they mesh together and don’t have a big impact on the overall story. The film is bland looking. Nothing about the cinematography or the lighting really caught my eye. I did like some of the production design though. The sets for some of the fight scenes look cool at points and I kinda liked the guy with the metal arms. That’s really about it. There isn’t a whole lot I remember about this film and I watched it less than a week ago. Check it out if you want but you’re missing nothing if you skip it.… Expand

Having been a fan of the MK franchise since playing the first game in the arcades in 1992, I'd taken the subsequent 'original' movies with a pinch of salt. Mainly because those making them understood the game was over the top and somewhatHaving been a fan of the MK franchise since playing the first game in the arcades in 1992, I'd taken the subsequent 'original' movies with a pinch of salt. Mainly because those making them understood the game was over the top and somewhat silly. They didn't try to make them serious or attempt to create something with aspirations beyond what the source material gave them.

However, this MK reboot does try to take itself somewhat seriously and because it's a film designed to appeal to Millennials it's so 'woke' to be unintentionally funny on too many occasions.

The plot bears no real resemblance to the one set out in the original games, instead introducing a new central character, with a backstory that exists just in this film. All the other characters fall from the roster of the MK game series, some more familiar to gamers than others. Sub-Zero is now the main villain, going off on an initial mission to kill the Earth Realm fighters before actual Mortal Kombat begins. Then we get the other bad guys popping up and Shang Tsung basically saying the rules don't apply, so up yours Raiden...

Unfortunately, despite there being a lot of fight scenes in the film, none are choreographed very well. Throw in far too many cuts, zooms, pans, dolly shots, etc as the fights are going on, and you can't really tell what is happening.

Everything else about the film is just 'meh'. The CGI, cinematography, visuals, acting, soundtrack... All just average, with nothing to really discuss.

But as a martial arts action film, it is pretty terrible!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mortal Kombat 2021 is hard to say its bad. It’s not good, but it’s not Mortal Kombat Annihilation bad. The film focus’s around Cole, a new character added for the film to take place around. Cole is an average guy with a wife and young teenaged daughter. He’s a past his prime MMA fighter who takes last minute calls for a couple hundred bucks. He, of course, loses his first couple of fights because, lets face it, he needs an arc. When it comes to faithfulness to the games, again, its mixed. The characters were fairly faithful and the tournament aspect. The problem comes when they discarded the tournament for some back alley fights because the bad guys want to kill everyone before they get to the tournament. There really isn’t a lot to say about the movie. You have a dragon tattoo? You have to unlock magical powers and fight. Yes, instead of great skill and fighting technique, its about magical powers. Kano has an eye laser that somehow shorts out when Sonya throws a bottle of stuff at it. How a magical, completely biological eye laser shorts out? Beats me. Jax gets magical metal arms that are pretty bare bones (excuse the pun) at first, but when he unlocks his magic super power, they grow into crazy cybernetic punching machines that give him super strength. While most of the others had to go through beatings and harsh training for theirs, Sonya unlocks hers as soon as she gets her tattoo. The only GOOD thing in this movie is Kano. The actor portrayed him well, if not a little less brutal than what he normally is. He seems to be a jokester punching bag for the first half, then a backstabbing incompetent in the second. He was funny as hell to watch though so I got some entertainment out of it.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie left me with very mixed emotions. As a MK fan, it was exciting to see it return to the big screen. However, as a movie lover and scriptwriting enthusiast, there are so many points which left me feeling indifferent. Below are some points on some factors I thought about when watching the movie, followed by what I would have done differently:
- The first seven minutes was released on social media, probably to encourage buys on streaming services. The first seven minutes is arguably the best of the movie.
- The absolute shambles of character building is a sin. - The character of Cole is fine. Not good, not bad. Just fine. It's as if he's there to join all the MK characters up... a new character with stakes. It's as if the script begun with a list of characters to drop throughout the movie, and found having a central character would help stick it all together.
- This brings me to my next point - fan service. This is a great fan service movie - it's very fun and has the violence and gore that MK fans want to see. However, this is at the expense of world building.
- Speaking of world building; Goro and Kano has been killed off in movie 1. I'm sure they don't return from the netherrealm in the games.. so...
- And as for Kano - hands down, the best character and portrayal in the movie. If this was a Kano movie, it would be an 8/10. Funny, a back-story, and Unfortunately, he dies, and part of my interest died with him.
- The dialogue at times is attrocious. The way both Bi-Han and Hanzo appear on screen after the prelude and proclaim "Call me (insert character name)". As if Hanzo went to hell, and thought 'I fancy calling myself Scorpion when I come back'. - I don't think anyone can explain why you need to hit subzero with a gardening tool before Scorpion can teleport from the netherrealm. Or how the timeline of scorpion/sub-zero fits with the other characters. Or why the Lin Kuei have beef with the Shirai Ryu (no mention of Takeda). The movie suggests Bi-Han kills Hanzo and his family because he carried the mark to represent Earthrealm - why not flesh this out? (Plus, the actual story is a long rivalry between clans; there is so much more to this).
- The story discusses the chosen fighters having an 'ikana' (not sure if that is spelt right) - I liked this take only because it helped the movie flow. Although, I'm sure there was a better way to portray why fighters have an unlockable special move(!).

What I would have done:
- Don't start writing a script with a list of characters! Start with a strong story.
- The best story in the movie was Hanzo vs Bi-Han. This should have been the movie. This would have included other characters relevant to the story (Grandmaster, Kuai Liang, Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke, Frost) and Takeda (the founder of the Shirai Ryu who was a Lin Kuei deserter) with other Shirai Ryu.
- This would have also given the opportunity to have non-MK characters be subject to fatalities without killing off important characters so early in the franchise!!
- The opening scene of the film could be fleshed out and made as a final sequence, resulting in a second movie.
- The movie could be set in 1890s Japan following the first Sino-Japanese war (and hence explain the beef between a chinese and japanese clan). This would also be a rough setting for a seventh MK tournament, which would play in nicely towards a modern day 10th MK tournament for the second movie.
- Quan Chi being name dropped as hiring the Lin Kuei during the movie... token post-credits scene with Hanzo meeting Quan Chi in the netherrealm.

All in all, 4/10. Fan-tastic (meaning totally fan service, but without Kano or fatalities, meh).… Expand

I didn't expect many from this movie but its even worst than I can imagine.
Bad scenario, bad acting, bad fights.

Watched the movie twice because the first time it didn't sit well with me. On second view, this is the best Mortal Kombat movie yet. I love the orginal, hated the sequel. For a "game based" movie, it was quite good. If I'm being honest, the storyline was so-so. It's a bit rushed. I enjoyed the movie. Don't expect good dialogues thought. There is a lot of gore but I would love to see more violent fights. I want to see more.

I enjoyed the movie and look forward to the franchise moving forward. The beginning is 10/10 will the other character developments are just enough fleshed out 7/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sub-zero seems to be hunting Scorpion’s clan for some unexplained reason, and somehow found Scorpion simultaneously in hiding with bodyguards, yet totally unprepared. Whatever their rivalry, it is left totally in the dark.
Cole’s introduction to the impending Mortal Kombat tournament is rushed, and confusing, creating more questions than it answers. How did Jax find him? Why is the mark of the tournament champions being passed down to Cole through his bloodline? Does the mark get passed down through every bloodline, unless an individual is killed? Are killers inherently stronger and more worthy than their victims, under any circumstances?
How did Sub-zero find Cole conveniently moments after Jax found him and started following him? What kind of supernatural ninja fails to murder a completely unarmed and unsuspecting guy in a restaurant?
Sonya and Jax claim to be part of a special task force researching the Mortal Kombat phenomenon, but they appear to have 0 resources. They are literally operating out of Sonya’s childhood trailer-house, with the cliché spiderweb of pictures and news-clippings tacked to the walls, and no money or any other sort of support.
Sonya captured Kano of camera, with a brief, unsatisfactory after-the-fact explanation. Again, Reptile manages to find Sonya and Cole and get to them without any explanation.
Another odd threadbare plot connection is that Kano conveniently knows where Raiden’s Temple is.
While Jax, Sonya, Subzero, and Reptile have had no trouble finding Cole without any explanation, Raiden and Lui Kang could not be bothered to go out to find Cole, who has been marked his whole life, but they did manage to rescue Jax after he lost his arms. They simply waited around until Cole and Kano arrived, with less than a month to train for the tournament that they have been aware of forever. So, I guess it would have been too much to expect Cole to be brought up preparing for this tournament that he was born to participate in.
Apparently there are Elder Gods that simultaneously set the rules of the tournament, to determine the fates of worlds, but are also “too lazy” to do anything when Outer World cheats? Except Raiden, who is there to help Earth realm, but only so much?
Raiden’s capacity to intervene in events is poorly defined. He goes out of his way to protect the champions from Shang Tsung at first. But when Shang Tsung finally penetrates Raiden’s shield barrier, Raiden claims to be obligated to stand by and remain neutral when Kung Lao is killed.
Our john doe fanfiction writer’s-ego Cole Young did not win a single fight on his own.
His wife helped him with Goro.
Raiden then agrees to use his teleportation ability to basically create game-like match-ups between champions. Sonya kills Kano and she immediately masters her “arcana” power, offscreen, and then magically saves Cole once, before Cole goes on to continue getting his ass kicked again.
After burning in hell for hundreds of years, waiting for no explained reason, Scorpion shows up at JUST the right moment to save Cole from Subzero – but only after letting all the events of this movie unfold.
Why does Scorpion say “Get over here” in English, when he exclusively speaks Japanese the rest of the movie? Why not say it in Japanese?
Jax’ “arcana” appears to simply be the ability to make his unbelievably frail mech-arms into the super strong arms we knew we’d be getting eventually. How can arcana – which generally appear in the forms of classic elemental magic like fire, ice, etc., make flimsy prosthetics into beefy robot muscles? I am not an expert on ableism and the nuances of the “supercrip” trope, but I’m pretty confident that this was a solid example of that ugly, tired trope.
The “arcana” premise is an unnecessary non-canon cliché.
This feels like some amateur’s sophomoric fan-fiction in which Cole is their generic John Doe add-in character so they can fantasize becoming part of the Mortal Kombat universe, canon be damned. The problem with this movie is 90% the script, an uninspired mix of unexplained, rushed plot points, and bad jokes.… Expand

Its a martial flick based off a video game....a very entertaining one at that. Surprisingly lots of humor (specifically from Kano). Manage your expectations and enjoy it for what it is. Decent martial arts/action sequences, funny, blood and gore - all checkmarks. CGI so-so, story so-so. Entertaining overall without expecting every actor to be Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour - check! Это никакая музыка, т.е. вообще , такое ощущение, что за пару дней написали эти саундтреки на заднем фоне и все на этом. Где мое легендарное интро, от которго я в детстве не в силах оторваться от экрана телевизора? Где легендарная музыка в файтинг сценах? Где блин крутая музыка??? Я велосипед в детстве продал ради касеты Мортал Комбат, чтобы постоянно пересматривать этот фильм и повторять приемы возле зеркала под наикрутейшую музыку из фильма. Посмотрите у всех легендарных фильмов есть свой саундтрек, который узнаешь по первым нотам. Короче за музыку ставлю 0.… Expand

The script is terrible, the plotline is terrible, the dialogue is cringeworthy at best except for Kano's lines. Tadanobu Asano was easily the worst actor in the film, and I don't know if it's his fault or the Director's fault, I couldn't understand what the **** he was saying. So yeah, this movie is a solid 5/10, not completely terrible, but definitely not good.… Expand

For an MK fan this movie was pretty good and waaaaaaaaay better than this trash MK Annihilation! Even though the writing sometimes felt weird.

This is a movie that starts out fantastic. The first 20 mins makes this look like its going to be a great ride. It is not that movie. The rest of the film looks like it is shot by another director

The Good
Kano ia a good comic relief and really carrys most of the movie
Subzero is a good character and has some great scenes
Scorpion is also another interesting character and has great fighting scenes
There is a few good gory scenes

The bad
The cgi is horrible, its really bad at times
The other characters are dull and dont really have much character, and the main character Cole is flat as a character.
A lot of bad choreographed fights and choppy editing. Also fights become very rushed.

Most people will not like this movie. Besides a few fans of MK.

I was entertained, but barely. I wasn’t expecting much and that’s what you get. Not much in character development, story, plot or acting. I spent most of my time watching this trying to fill in the gaps from what I know of MK as the writersI was entertained, but barely. I wasn’t expecting much and that’s what you get. Not much in character development, story, plot or acting. I spent most of my time watching this trying to fill in the gaps from what I know of MK as the writers put in several twists on the existing lore. While it had it’s moments, they were mostly surface level and didn’t go deeper then the shocks that the gore delivered. The acting isn’t “bad,” but it’s very flat. This becomes more noticeable with one character who stood out as someone who was very dynamic when on screen stealing the show in a way that negatively effected the story line. (You end up rooting for them at times and that’s definitely not what the writers wanted.) The movie did look beautiful and was very well filmed, but it had such a narrow scope for something that was supposed to be about a grand tournament to decide the fate of our world. If you have it available to watch as part of a streaming service at no extra cost and you like the 90’s movie I’d give it a watch. Just be warned that this movie is not of kids.… Expand

A few nothing-special fight scenes with some fan service in the form of fatalities and special moves (not to mention Kano's mouth) is really all there is to stitch together the slow scenes, the story is pretty been-there-done-that and (spoiler alert? maybe?) the power unlocking bit feels like a tacked-on plot contrivance... But it was fun, and I'm just not inclined to poke that many holes in it considering how far we've now come since Annihilation.… Expand
