Many were probably tortured by this directors vision and had to watch their formative years be ripped apart by this film. It is complete idocracy, even for today’s standards. The movie has horrible pacing. There is no tournament. The chosen outland characters were dumb. Raiden is useless and boring. The dialogue is horrible. Character development is horrible. CGI is bad. Main character is boring and their family doesnt belong in this movie. Cheesy one-liners. There is no tournament. Outland is never explored. Kano’s eye is so dumb. Hanzo who is clearly an honorable warrior and the victim at the beginning of the movie somehow ends up in hell becoming Scorpion? Thats dumb. This movie is like watching six different directors’ half remembered fever dreams of the 15 minutes they spent playing the game before filming. Oh, there is no tournament. For those who think I didnt understand the directors interpretation, I did and it doesnt work, its bad, like really bad. There is no tournament. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The proof that special effect does not make it for the rest. The character looks, combat moves and special effects are awesome, though that's all. The character feels empty, their introduction is weird and we feel as it was more about showing as much of them as possible and their magic than making them feel real. They feel more real in MK 11 game. They do not have their vibe (Kano is not scary at all, Shang Tsun looks half geisha and Liu Khang looks on weed ). The story pacing was weird as well. I was not hooked at all and I am a fan since Mk1 game. I will not buy and not rewatch this ever again for sure. Disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is all over the place with its story compared to the 11 games. Has nothing to do with the MK tournament if anything this movie is filler for a series. This move was not exciting at all, compared to MK 9,10, and 11 story modes. Hell at least make an attempt to play the all the games and make this movie for the fans. If anything LET THE FANS DIRECT VIDEO GAME MOVIES, HELLO??? ASK OUR FEED BACK AND STUFF. Cole is such a boring character, he barely talks and gets beat up most of this movie. How are we supposed to like this hero if he sucks? Also, all the characters are boring. Spoiler alert, you won’t see scorpion until the end of the movie and he is on screen for 5 mins. The music is terrible, and they need a Mortal Kombat fan to shoot the next movie, or just turn it into television television series on HBO max. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an old school MK fan, I really want to like this movie. The trailers were impressive and it was hard to believe that it was a low-budget movie. The effects are nice, Reptile's model looks nice too. Goro a bit ackward, expected it to be the same model as in MKX, but this one is a bit leaner/thinner.
The low-budget is seen in the seamless integration of these effects and models into the rest of the world as with any low-budget movie. And it's here where it is a hit or miss. Some parts are done very well, but a lot of stuff is obvious what's real and what's handled with blue/green screen.

With so much promotion on the Sub-Zero and Scorpion story, the movie focusses hardly on them. It seems just to be the sandwhich to hold the meat, where the sandwich is tastier than the meat.
With the abomination that is MK Annihilation and peaking new interest with the 'realistic take' of MK with the concept of MK Legacy (although I didn't like every episode of that one, sometimes it went too realistic), I had my hopes up with this movie. Only to be disappointed. It doesn't even feel like 'a fight for the faith of the world', but just some backyard choreographed fighting. This movie is full of neat references and even the use of exact moves of the game. But it all falls flat in every way possible. The story doesn't make sense nor how some obtain their 'invitation' to fight in MK. I also felt this movie fell into the 'subliminal 2020 politics' trap.

Having Kano bantering a bit wasn't necessarily bad, but seemed to be used too much as a slapstick character to be ridiculed. Which only made it aware Cage was missing. And is trademark eye just appears out of thin air. And what was up with Jax's chicken arms?! It didn't make sense to give him these kind of arms and then have them suddenly transform into bulkier ones, because he found his 'inner-strength'.
This happens with most of the characters. It doesn't happen naturally either, it really is forced and you know exactly when it's going to happen, before it happens. This movie is so predictable!
Kabal is one of my favorite characters (in the game), but why did they have to make him sound like an 1950s Brooklyn gangster?! Cole was an unnecessary character. Shang Tsung isn't even waiting to cheat until he has lost, he just starts cheating immediatly! In the original movie he atleast waited to cheat 'till he noticed he was losing the tournament (although he planned it just in case). And the creepiness Shang Tsung had in the original movie came from the fact that he was actually a likeable and charming guy. There was so much more going on in the original movie then what you thought at first glance, what this new version is lacking.

If you've seen the trailer, seen the Hanzo intro and the Scorpion/Sub-Zero fight, you pretty much saw the best the movie has to offer. They are better off scrapping what they have planned for a next movie, just go back to the drawing board and take a good hard look at what made the original 1995 movie still loved today and what made the concept of MK Legacy peak interest again.

This movie just picked some 'random characters' to do some choreographed fighting, walking from one scene to the next. Punches didn't have that oooomph that the 1995 MK movie did have. It's funny how the 1995 movie, although playing only on an Island (Shang Tsungs Island), made you feel like they were really fighting for the faith of the world, yet this movie with its grand landscape has made it feel tiny.
And I can make a whole list of comparisons from this movie to the original 1995 one. This movie might have great visuals, although understandibly not that seamingless, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original one. The original one really understood what Mortal Kombat was about. It knew when to be serious, it knew when it was allowed to be cheesy and it knew where it needed to be 'for the fans'.
It's funny how when the original movie first came out, I didn't like it so much because it wasn't exactly like the game. Like the same actors, same environments, ... . But then I realised it didn't have to and loved it ever since. Great cast, great soundtrack, great fighting you really felt punches of, ... .

At this point, I just hope they remaster the original movie like they did with the original Star Wars-trilogy. Update the CGI (especially Reptile, that hasn't aged well), maybe use CGI for Goro and if possible, add some discarded footage.

It's a shame these days you have reviews that either give 0's or 10's, so you are actually still left in the dark.
Although I'm an MK fan, I'll probably get downvotes for this and claims that if I didn't like this movie, I'm not an MK fan. But I have been with MK from the beginning and loved that MK has been picking itself up again this last decade, so it's actually quite 'painful' for me that this movie didn't hold my interest, except for a few references.

Cheers

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. tl;dr this is a poorly made film that rides more on the name rather than any actual substance.

The fact that this is the feature directorial and writer debut of Simon McQuoid is not all surprising thanks to how poorly this film is made. First off, the story. Instead of heading directly to the tournament, this film works as a prequel of sorts by focusing on the attempts by Shang Tsung to kill the chosen fighters before the tournament to secure an easy 10th and final win and be allowed to conquer Earthrealm. This isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it's a needless change when all the character "growth" could have still been done in the tournament proper. This change, comes more to add more weight to the death of Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion) earlier in the film due to some prophecy that a descendant of Hanzo would win the 10th tournament. This descendant is non other than the new protagonist Cole Young.
Cole is one of the biggest problems of the film. The character was clearly made to put more focus on Scorpion and Subzero, due to Cole being from Scorpion's bloodline. While that makes sense as Scorpion and Subzero are the mascots of the series, Cole is a terrible character to do it, as he is poorly written and acted, creating a generic and cliche character that comes off more as an author self insert rather than someone that belongs among the regular cast. This pushes Liu Kang out of his regular protagonist role and relegates him to minor character status. That fate also occurs to most of the other series regulars. Any weight that they have in the games is lost here, as the creator is relying on fans' familiarity with the characters to create emotional investment as opposed to developing them within the film's narrative. This comes back to bite the film as whenever characters are killed, there is no emotion for those with no prior knowledge of the games and characters. Kung Lau is the biggest example of this, as his death has no meaning though it is supposed to be an emotional low point. His connection to Liu Kang is only done through exposition, so it is difficult to really empathize with Kang as his lost. The films bad pacing also plays a part in the lack of emotional investment. The film swings between fights and exposition without time for character, leaving any emotional stakes in the fights nonexistent. The only character that really gets any character development is Cole, except it is trite and cliche, without doing anything that makes it unique. So any emotional stakes in his fight are more contrived.
The fights themselves are not poorly choreographed, but they are poorly shot and edited, with many of them also being poorly lit. This makes the fights difficult to watch and not even delivering on empty spectacle. The only fight that is decent is the final fight between Scorpion and Subzero.
The special effects overly rely on low-quality CGI that looks unfinished, minimizing much of the impact the amount of gore could have. When a body gets cut in half, it comes off as unconvincing as the effect looks fake. The only times the effects look good are when they were done practically, or used Subzero's ice (the only good CGI in the film).
Overall this is an incompetent film that can't even deliver on blind spectacle action like other franchises can due to the ineptitude of the creation. The only reason it is so pervasive in the zeitgeist is due to the mass marketing relying on the name of the brand, being on of the most popular fighting game franchise of all time. While a sequel is undoubtedly on the way, hopefully it is made with people who actually know what they are doing and try to make a decent product first as opposed to a cash grab.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As long as you do not shoot holes in the story, it's a great movie. SPOILER ALERT. The Mark represents a chosen for the tournament, but for some dumb reason Cole's mark was passed down through his bloodline, which originates with Scorpion. Everyone else has to get their mark by killing a combatant that has the mark and it transfers over. Last gripe would be the actor they chose for Raiden. Dry as a popcorn fart and very hard to understand. Okay with they bad out of the way, this film was GREAT. Seems like a prequel and there will definitely be another one, especially since there was no actual tournament in this one. Fights were amazing and they managed to bring in actual fatalities. If you're a fan of the game, then go see it. It's worth it for sure. If you're not a fan, you won't get it, so don't go. Simple as that Expand

I enjoyed it. But that being said, the movie is extremely shallow in the middle (aka the guts of the film) I think it is a big case of the director trying to do too much in too little of time and it hops around so much that you don’t really get time to develop relationship with any character enough to give a damn. Also, the baddies are clearly what makes this movie good, and they deserve more screen time. Making sub zero so menacing is literally what made this movie any good. And joe taslim deserves a damn subzero mythologies like movie. Also I think they could have went with more horror like themes to make the villains even more terrifying. Kabal looked amazing until he spoke. I think there needed to be another 40 minutes to make you give a damn and develop these characters more if you are gonna try and tell this many stories in one film. That’s where the original movie shines because it was clearly More focused on the main 3 characters. But is worth mentioning that the soundtrack is great with the swooping synth keyboards along with the pounding drums. I also approved of almost all of the cast in their roles, I think I just wanted more depth from the dialogue. Bottom line this is not a great movie, but that’s not to say it isn’t any fun. It’s actually very fun and has a ton of potential for strong follow up sequels.focused. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. just want to start off by stating the things I did love about the movie which are, somewhat introducing the rivalry of Sub-Zero and Scorpion though not in detail and having empty dialogue “for the Lin-kuei” or whatever. The fights scenes were great, I loved the fatalities and brutalities that were shown.

BUT THE MAIN CHARACTER WAS TERRIBLE, they should not have made a new Character! If anyone knows who Takeda is from Mortal Kombat, I believe making him a character and taking that route with him would’ve been amazing, and his powers would’ve been amazing, his battle with Gorro which was WAY TOO FAST AND CORNY like that matchup deserved so much better. If they took they Takeda route it would’ve fulfilled it better especially since Takeda trained under Scorpion, so he has resemblance in his moves while also having a few mixed martial arts in the mix to make it his own which would’ve fit this Cole character way better. Cole was basically a mute through the movie and was just someone nobody enjoyed at all which was disappointing because his actor is amazing in other films. Partial additional problems with the film was having a first time writer, should not have risked it with this movie, a movie that could’ve been a 10 out of 10 Legendary Classic if they made better decisions. I don’t like how quick Kung Lao died I feel Kung Lao should’ve fought Gorro if anything, could’ve brought his hat tricks into the mix to use against his arms, etc. the greatest characters were sidelined, didn’t see much of Scorpion. Fight scenes were too short, the ending fight scene was great and then ruined by Cole getting involved. I feel like if you grabbed a fan to write the movie it would’ve been better hell, I could’ve told them to make Cole Takeda and it would’ve made more sense, it’s just so disappointing. I was really excited for this movie and was let down, I’m giving it a 4 because only thing great about this movie was the fight scenes and they were cut short. Characters were flat except Kano, Scorpion, Sub-zero. Casting was great though, iffy about Liu Kang and Shang Tsung

Its decent.

It fits the mold of what you would expect. Pretty CGI, extensive martial arts & presumably wire-fu. The basic set piece of the video game.

It makes a weird step to try to seem fresh with some of its character choices. It also sets itself up to likely be a trilogy of films. Question is, why?

Its definitely as good as the original Mortal Kombat was back in the 90s for its time. It has ample easter eggs to hunt for and hits a lot of lore choices along the way. It just really does not serve a lot of purpose that has not already been covered by the original. All that is really getting added is higher budget graphics and updated rosters with a few left for future sequels to "unlock"

Its good, and serves its purpose. Just like the original it will be mostly forgettable for being a video game film adaptation that isnt terrible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie just isn't good. While it does follow certain elements of the game, it felt like a giant 2 hour long teaser for the actual movie to come (if there is enough money and hype to make the damn thing). The characters are also very bland in terms of emotion (except for Kano) and I found their performance so soulless, I'm surprised Shang Tsung didn't die in the first few minutes. As for the tournam--wait....I've been waiting 2 hours and there's no tournament!? And if there's no tournament, then anything goes, right? So where's Raiden when you need him? Oh yeah, he's too busy talking slowly as if he's trying to hold in his elder god poop.

Overall, if you loved the 1995 version of Mortal Kombat, stick to that. The 2021 version of Mortal Kombat makes MK: Annihilation look more watchable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a big fan of the game, of its elaborate (and somewhat cheesy) lore and its interesting characters. This movie does a disservice to all. There is some good fighting to watch here, but it’s mostly on the second half tucked away after some pretty tedious introductory act / rocky training montage

I don’t understand the need for this new character Cole. He is supposed to be an audience stand-in, which would be fine and dandy if MK didn’t already have a perfect one since day 1. The name’s Johnny Cage... A chosen one who has no idea what the hell is going on! A character slot is wasted in this Cole guy who brings nothing to the table except for a generic family and personal life we have to pretend to care about. Cole is representative of the problems with this movie: when it sticks to MK lore (like the feud between the Shirai Ryu and the Lin Kuei), it’s great. When it tries to get all Hollywood-y, it completely loses its charm. Unfortunately it spends more time trying to repackage Mortal Kombat for the masses rather than building upon it. The titular tournament isn’t even here! Villains as iconic as Kabal and Mileena are reduced to punching bags with no attempt to build on their own canon (and since when is Kano’s laser a weird spiritual power? He’s half cyborg! For god’s sake). Some recognizable fatalities are there but more often than not deaths feel anti-climactic and cheap. MK is pretty much a franchise served on a platter. By rehashing the first game, presenting the tournament and a few key characters, they could’ve had a simple, satisfying story that focused on the action and still have a ton of cast and plot left for sequels. Instead, they tried this weird prequel experiment to please both fans of the game and the general public and which guarantees no one will leave completely satisfied.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mortal Kombat was amazing, I loved it so much. I loved how they didn't skimp on the violence and gore and how they perfectly mixed it with comedic moments also how they used iconic lines and moves from the games. The writing especially the screenplay was superb. The visual effects were remarkable especially Sub-Zero's powers, Liu's powers, Scorpion's Kunai, Milenna's powers, Jax's arms, Syzoth (Reptile), Raiden's powers, Cole's powers, Nitara's wings, Kung's hat, Goro, Sonya's powers, and Kano's powers. The acting was stupendous especially from Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Sisi Stringer, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Max Huang, Ludi Lin, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Tadanobu Asano, and Damon Herriman. The makeup and hairstyling was phenomenal especially on Sisi Stringer, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Mel Jarnson, Max Huang, Jessica McNamee, and Lewis Tan. The costumes were outstanding especially ones wore by Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Max Huang, Sisi Stringer, Joe Taslim, Chin Han, Ludi Lin, Lewis Tan, Daniel Nelson, Mel Jarnson, and Josh Lawson. The sets were spectacular. The score was also great. To me this was an A+ movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its okay...really.

The opening was phenominal and made me choke a little...serious...no really!!
It set the bar too high actually, as the movie focuses on Cole (a new character that somehow connected to Scorpion. Honestly, the high points of the remainder of the movies was Kano's acting, Kabal, Sonia and the short Sun-Zero/Scorpion fight. The Shaolin Monks were cool and could've used more team action from them. I liked how they threw in VERY subtle MK jokes and the Fatalities were cool.
BUT no Cage and Raiden never fights despite Outworld clearly breaking every rule of Mortal Kombat that was explained.

The original MK1 had better actors, settings, story and setting. Had there been a deeper focus on some backstory on other characters and the narrative focus on slighty higher pace than the opening, then yeah it would've been cooler.

Also, I hate to say this but Raiden was poorly casted.
This is an English-speaking movie and his accent was just so thick, I mean Shang Tsung's actor was crystal and well spoken. I know that sounds wrong or maybe in comparison to how clear Christopher Lambert spoke, I can be better understood.

Didn't use the original theme song once (Instant 2 off the score), the actors weren't comparable to the originals, no johnny cage, and the actor who played kano got a back injury afterwards due to him carrying the entire film.

Really big pacing issues, why was Jax even in it? Same for the teeth chick and whoever the 'chosen one' was. Christopher Lambert as Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung in the originals were easily a thousand times better than their counter-parts in the new movie. They should have at least brought a scottish guy back for Raiden or something instead of whoever the pudgy guy they had as him was. Both Lambert and Tagaway knew exactly what type of movie they were in and they hammed it up perfectly. The new Tsung and Raiden are always serious, all the time. It falls flat, like their acting, and just like the movie itself. Oh, and the new Liu Kang or however you spell it was terrible compared to the original actor as well.

Sub Zero and Kano stole what little there was of the movie worth stealing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People who kontinue to say there is no plot line or bad plot do not understand MK lore or the realms and should watch again or maybe stick to Harry Potter. This movie is def. a Part 1 of 2 and this movie sets up the next beautifully. The reviews remind me of when Kill Bill Vol. 1 came out and people killed it and didn’t get the vision til Vol. 2 came out. The movie does well taking the time to set up the Earthrealm characters and how each ends up brutally becoming MK combatants. The development of the new character is well done with dope weapons in the blade and Kali stick. Kano and Kabal are gems in this movie.

The Tournament will obviously be hosted by Shao Kahn in the 2nd movie and Bi-Han will return as Noob. Kung Lau will probably become a revenant like in MKX and Goro will return from the NetherRealm. Raiden might even summon Night Wolf and Katana. The cinematography is top notch and the camera work on the fight scenes is awesome and add realism to a video game movie. They give perfect nods to the game itself in well timed parts and the movie works great comedically and seriously which is though to pull off. The movie is fun and will be rewatched when the 2nd comes out and the reviews will only get better with time.

Mortal Kombat has very few redeeming qualities. It's as if the studio was like "How can we show all the same fatalities in the video game but in a movie. That'll be cool." The story was basically non-existent and partially abandoned halfway through the movie. There was no tournament. There was lackluster combat. The mythology behind the mortal kombat was poorly planned out. It was made to be this "tradition" but the heroes and villains just kept running into each other. I cannot believe how much the people behind this film just totally mismanaged it. Give me $70 million and I cannot do 1000x better. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s fun seeing some iconic moves from the games, but things just go down hill from there. Character design is amazing with certain characters while being completely lackluster with others, I’m looking at you young.... while I know a mortal kombat movie won’t have a solid story considering the games are the same, it still seems like the story was purposely made incoherent and to make as little sense as possible. Talks about the final tournament however everybody just has personal spars to the death instead of actually go to mortal kombat the tournament. Movie had potential but was flopped with every aspect. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Started out great with the nice Japanese setting and suspenseful atmosphere but then it went downhill from there. The movie introduces a brand new character, Cole Young, as the main character of the movie, big mistake. The Mortal Kombat franchise has plenty of awesome characters they could have used but instead they decided to make up a brand new one who is mostly mute throughout the entire movie and when he does talk it's just generic gibberish. I thought Kano was decent and he mostly carried this movie, it's too bad he's dead now. The Scorpion vs Sub-Zero fight scenes were cool but short. Kung Lao does a cool fatality and dies too soon. Liu Kang does his dragon fatality but makes you wonder why he doesn't just stay in dragon form. Jax does a cool fatality but at the wrong setting, he should have instead uppercutted Reiko into the bottom of the pit like in the first game. The movie tries to explain how these earthrealm fighters got their super powers by coming up with this idea of arcana, that these people chosen by a dragon tatoo can unlock their powers by having something happen to them. Apparently the tatoo can be passed on to the victor if the victor kills someone with a dragon tatoo. Cole somehow has the tatoo because he's a descendant of Scorpion, apparently you can pass the tatoo by having babies. Dumb. There's no need to come up with explanations of how they have their powers, this is Mortal Kombat not the real world, they just have these powers and that's fine. But by coming up with this arcana stuff you end up with dumb decisions like Kano unlocking his arcana by arguing about egg rolls, Cole unlocking his by getting punched by Goro despite the fact that he's been getting punched for many years in his MMA career, Jax getting super robot arms which suddenly evolved from skinny robot arms, Sonja unlocking hers I have no idea how she unlocked hers so quick after getting her tatoo. It's so silly and unnecessary. Some other big disappointments were Raiden and Shang-Tsung. Raiden spends the entire movie claiming he can't interfere but he does at the end. It's funny how he always shows up too late, he's like the opposite of Superman in this movie. The 1995 Raiden was so much better. As for Shang-Tsung the only thing he does is give out some orders, takes away Kung Lao's soul without having to weaken him, and gets banished by Raiden. The 1995 Shang-Tsung had some cool fight scenes and some nice lines, this new one is just lame like this movie. Expand

The film essentially has a gear of actors taken as if directly from the benches of the acting school and thrown into the arena of the MK circus, with the exception of Hiroyuki Sanada. This film gives you "fatality" due to the lack of crowds, and everything happens predictably at all times, between the same interlocutors, like a chess game with 2 characters (good and bad) and a few pawns, on the board. Visual effects, the only pluses, but too little for 2021. The 1995 film is Rolls Royce next to it. Expand

The opening and 1st 20 min or so of the movie is great then it falls off a cliff hard. Music sucks, Cole is not a good character and the fight scenes at the end are cut way too short and the final fight scene would of been better if Cole was not there. I'm being extremely generous giving it a 6 it's got pretty bad writing in my opinion. And Cole is completely irrelevant. Expand

Yes, Cole is not a great main character.
But I dont really know what people expected from a cringy IP in the first place? A masterwork of art and acting? Please... Its action. Stupid, unrealistic and brainless action!
For todays standards this is a very good brainless flick, that simply entertains through good action, in the likes that you havent seen since the 90s.
Also it has almost no political crap in it, which gives it quite a few plus points. But it doesnt get along completely without it. Mileena is such a thing. She looks nothing like the original character (not even the same ethnicity) and has a body shape that makes her fit better into a Weight Watchers commercial. She also gets dealt with rather effortless. Other than that its really well made and how those fighters got their powers and other abilities/features is also more or less well explained.
I am excited for a sequel!

The CGI is hit and miss. The writing feels really lazy. The movie focuses on the conflict between Sub-Zero and Scorpion, but this still takes up less than 10 minutes of the movie.

Still worth a watch, just don't expect to be blown away. Kano carries the movie. Worth watching it for him alone. But don't expect much beyond that.

A good videogame adaptation and a bad movie. As a result, mediocre release.
