This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have no exposure to the Eternals in comics. However, I do occasionally read comics and have enjoyed most of the MCU. On that note, I had no past exposure to Shang-Chi and I enjoyed that film quite a bit. So, I went into this movie with an open mind. I was seriously disappointed. In short: The acting was subpar. The characters weren't likable. The pacing was off. They tried to do too much. It was probably 30-45 minutes too long.

It seemed like the director/creative team wanted to tell one story and Marvel/Feige wanted to tell another. One regarding the Celestial story and another regarding the Deviant story. They were somewhat intertwined (explaining the cycle of life and creation of the eternals), but could have easily been separated into two movies. Personally, I felt like the stakes were higher with the Deviant storyline. However, just as I thought the Deviants were being set up as the threat for the sequel, they were unceremoniously killed them off. It would have been a great cliff hanger to have Ikaris (and maybe even Sprite) in hiding (instead of suicide by sun), then they get simultaneously struck by the tentacles of the main Deviant, Ikaris starts to turn gray, the main Deviant starts to change, then cut to black. The Celestial story was a bit eye-rolling and boring for me. Mainly because we've already seen this story. In Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Ego (a presumed Celestial, but now the writers of the Eternals say he may have been "lying") is discovered to have planted seeds on other worlds to convert them into other Celestials - destroying the planets in the process. In Eternals, the Celestials have conspired to prepare Earth (and other planets in the past) as a womb to give birth to other Celestials - destroying the planet in the process. In Guardians 2, there was emotional investment in stopping Ego and minimizing destruction throughout the galaxy. In Eternals, we (the audience) already knew Earth wouldn't be destroyed. So, what were the stakes?

Additionally, the weird attempt at a love "square" between Sersi, Whitman, Ikaris, and Sprite was a huge fail. Whitman was barely in it. Sure, Sersi and Ikaris had some chemistry but not enough to be investing. I understand the attempt at empathy with Sprite, but it ended up just being creepy.

Ikaris' betrayal was flat out dumb. His motive of "I'm a Soldier and I will complete our mission" wasn't believable. The Eternals were his family. The Celestials were his boss. No one picks their boss over family. It would have made more sense for him to be doing it all for Sersi. Each time the Eternals are sent on a new mission, their memory is wiped. Him wanting to complete the mission, so Sersi (and his) memory is wiped and they can start over on a new planet (without Whitman) would have made way more sense.

I'm all onboard a toning down all the quips/jokes and being a bit more serious in the MCU. However, most of these characters were not likable. Sersi, Makkari, and Ajak were one dimensional. Ikaris ended up being a mindless tool. Thena was a liability. The entire character of Sprite was a bit creepy. Kingo seemed like one of the better characters until he suddenly said that he didn't care if they saved the world. Phastos was similar to Kingo where there were moments that he was likable but his character was too wishy washy - pretty sure he wouldn't have needed convincing to help save the world that his husband and child lived on. Druig was a whiny jerk with a god-complex (and super poorly acted, which is a bummer cause I loved Keoghan in Killing of a Sacred Deer). Gilgamesh was awesome and I understand why killing him off made sense for the story - to help "awaken" Thena - but I think flip-flopping this where Thena dies and Gilgamesh goes on to fight harder and eventually take out the main Deviant would have been more satisfying.

In my opinion, this was hands-down the worst MCU film. If they never made a sequel, I wouldn't lose any sleep.… Expand

i am not intrested in these characters and what they'l do in the future

Easily one of the worst movies of 2021. Sad to see Marvel loosing to DC like that, but maybe it's about time that happened. Marvel's last hope is now Spider-Man, hopefully that delivers. Eternals lost already.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disappointing.The whole movie is tensionless and it's got two villains! (the baby celestial and the deviants). We spend so little time with the characters that by the time Gilgamesh dies we feel nothing. Ajak dies and we feel nothing. Thena and Giglamesh's relationship looked cute but there was no development, how did they love each other? Was it sibling love, romantic love? Go figure. There is also some kind of relationship between Makkari and Druig but we get a line of dialoge that kind of sort of implies it and nothing more. Not even the relationship between Phastos and his husband is explored and they're being sold as the first "gay couple" and what not. We're also supposed to believe that Ikaris and Sersi love each other, not sure where we were told about that but it never feels real. In the end Ikaris offs himself without seeing any consequences, Sprite is gladly rewarded for betraying the eternals with "mortal life" and Kingo was in the movie for reasons? He even leaves before the final big boss fight. Oh, and Jon Snow is also there because he needs to be introduced for his new show/movie/appearance in other films. This could've been an awesome series, but it makes for a mediocre movie.… Expand

Just a mid movie overall. Boring for the most part, takes too much to get to the good part. It would be a 5 or a 6 if it were created by any other studio, but Marvel should be able to do something better with all their money, so it is a 2.

Disappointing.

Marvel Studios grew a tendency to deliver good plot twist and immersive story telling, but not this time. Ethernals felt like and eternity on the theater, is disengaging, empty and with poor casting, looks to me this movieDisappointing.

look, I may be pretentious when it comes to movies but I still enjoy the occasional superhero flick, Eternals is just bad, the reviews aren't fake, the movie is just awful. At an excruciating 2 hours and 40 minutes it's an exercise in tedium. A movie where people stand around outdoors talking nonstop while saying nothing of value. This is pretty much a discount Zack Snyder movie, with the worst traits of those movies but without any of the good ones. The movie is boring, badly acted and, for a 200 million dollar production, it looks like a Netflix Original.

Marvel got high on their success of Endgame and thought they could turn any turd into gold. Maybe with a better direction they could have gotten something out of this, but as it is now it's a movie not even Disney shills can defend with a straight face. Embarrassing. It is just bad, but not even bad enough to make it entertaining. It is just dull and mostly it lacks logic and depth. The excuses concerning Thanos are laughable. They're good, solid, blockbuster fun and there is some exceptional storytelling, so I'm not a lover or a hater. This is just pure dreck, though. You can tell it's a movie made by the diversity and inclusion team at Disney. I don't mind that **** if it's organic, but anymore I just see through to what it really is; unadulterated corporate pandering. I could even tolerate that if there was decent storytelling, but there isn't. In fact, some of it is just insulting. I only lasted 30 min. A deaf God? That's too far. Surely we can tell solid stories with deaf characters, but c'mon!… Expand

This is a prime example of terrible casting. Not only that but the script is trash, jokes severely unfunny (didn't even smile or chuckle once), acting atrocious, story even worse. It's your run of the mill save the world or be betrayed superhero movie, and this one is by far the worst I've ever seen.

I'm glad this was as cheap as it was on Black Friday month 2022 (because black friday deals are actually a month or longer now if you haven't noticed), or I never would have bought this garbage.

It took me 3 days to finish this movie. It was so bad I had to watch it in 30 minute increments before being completely bored or annoyed at how bad the writing and jokes and script are. These actors have no place in any Marvel or DC movie moving forward. Angelina Jolie was basically the only tolerable character here and that's because she didn't say much at all in the film. Everyone else was complete cringe.

This movie was not necessary in the Marvel universe and no one asked or wanted it. And the fact that a sequel will come is even worse. Save your time and money on this one, and pass.

The people who gave this 10s have the lowest standards imaginable. There wasn't one good thing about this movie except for how good Angelina looks with silver hair in a white costume.… Expand

The acting was good. too bad everything else was so bad. a great cast and CGI can't save a film that is poorly written, directed, etc. This was more of a 'film' than a 'movie' per se, so I will judge it as such. It mostly focuses on the least likeable of the eternals, while the only bearable or interesting ones are killed off. the characters are just as intolerable as they are at the end that they were at the beginning. they put so much focus on sersi and ikaris, without even attempting to flesh out their characters or even the relationship. Maybe if it was a series, they would have been able to flesh things out more, but this story was made too big for its runtime. If they HAD to focus on a couple for some odd reason, it should have been thena and gilgamesh through athena basically losing her mind. i don't get the love a lot of people had for ikaris and druig because i wanted to knock both of their teeth out. The contrast and lighting this film has is WAY out of place, it feel like Man of Steel. It should have been called "what if... Marvel tried to make a DC movie"… Expand

Hilarious thing is that even Liberal Movie Critics didn't like it. Shows that even they are tired of mediocre movies full of political agendas. I have been liberal my whole life and i didn't like this movie at all. Not recommending it to anyone ever.

Utter rubbish. Its not a movie. Its a diverse group of people pretending. Sigh. If you want real Marvel its hard to look past Logan. Or just go back to reading the comics and pretend phase 3 was where it ended.

They aren't humans but love humans but were created to help Populate the earth but didn’t stop thanos but then wanted to cause the emergence but didnt but did.....

Also their powers are weak it’s not even a superhero movie it’s just a weird alien story, marvel is really struggling after iron man 2 and it shows.

Waste of time don't recommend it for anyone. There is so many things they could do but they decided to just let him fail Because he loved her. Also Ikaris and Spirte did not have the bracelets to connect them so another major flaw...… Expand

I make it plain and simple. The MCU died after Avengers: Endgame. There is a time for everything, but the time of the MCU is over. This is just an empty vessel of what once was. Safe your money.

Another tired Marvel entry. They really will do anything for money. Horrible story telling. Poor casting. Terrible character development. I’m sorry, the director massively failed with this film. So many pointless and uninteresting scenes. Also the camera never stops moving, it’s a cheap way to create energy, but it doesn’t work in this film because is nonstop and over used. Set and costume designs is impressive. Sadly, this feels completely like an amateur film made for TV on Sunday afternoon. Absolutely boring and uninspired. God I miss the days of great film making from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.… Expand

Lazy and boring cinematography with forgettable characters. Another garbage MCU movie which tries to educate the world. But the biggest sin is the fact that a viewer cannot connect with the story, which is flat. Waste of time.

I'm just glad this rubbish is the debut and ending of a lame united colors of Benetton approach where everyone has to be represented even if it's in the most generic and uninspiring way.

This film was just a bore all around. The film made little sense in the MCU world even thought they explained why the eternals don't help, but when the world is about to end. Where are the Avengers!!! No sense at all!

Terrible movie. Marvel needs to abandon this brand and find another avenue. Find something else to do for 2.5 hours, you will be a better person for not watching this awful movie. Yuck.

I watched this for free (a friend had two free tickets). I did not want to go at first, as my friend insisted, I accepted the invitation. Serious mistake from my side. Ou tenté de voir, car s’infuser deux plombes et demi de ce truc bavard, prétentieux et compassé avec de temps à autre des combats grotesques contre des créatures « pas gentilles »‘, ce serait s’abrutir totalement, en plus de perdre son temps ! même les effets spéciaux sont niais, à croire que ça vient de chez Disniais… oh mais en fait, c’est le cas puisque Marvel s’est fait bouffer par Disniais depuis quelque temps déjà !

On constate à quel point ça déteint, même si les marvelleries n’ont jamais fait preuve d’une quelconque intelligence en termes de narration, d’idées et de super héros… (sinon, ça se saurait… ou on l’aurait su). Ces gugusses éternels sont donc aussi grotesques que tout le reste, incarnés par des tocards et autress inconnus au bataillon… ainsi que deux stars cougars en perte de vitesses à propos desquelles on se demande laquelle a eu le meilleur charcudoc. J’hésite encore.

M’enfin bref, que c’est chiant et bête à la fois, ce putain de truc ! on n’en revient (toujours) pas… une daube éternelle en somme !… Expand
