i'm disappointed:
the movie is slow, predictable and full of stereotypes. pretty good visual effect (but not awesome)
bad jokes
totally overrated and below average for a marvel movie

Killmonger is the best bad guy in MCU for now. Thats what I can say for sure.
But movie is just boring with low quality of CGI. For me it is just appetizer before the main course - Infinity War.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film presents a very solid 1st hour with many action scenes, a great presentation to the characters and the culture and a great villain, and I do not mean Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) but Klaue (Andy Serkis) who should have been the main villain in this movie and leave the character of Jordan for the sequel. Since Klaue seemed like a villain that should be explored more and the performance of Andy Serkis is phenomenal, I did not like that they killed him so fast. And I think that there is the main problem of the film, the 2nd hour of film, after the death of Klaue, the film falls, it becomes long, boring and predictable, and has moments (in my opinion) a little ridiculous.
Even so, the soundtrack (which I liked the inclusion of modern rap songs and traditional African music), the CGI and the cinematography are excellent.

The movie isn't bad, but it by no means is a 9 or 10/10. The humor is mostly cringy that the audience I was with only got two decent laughs in the entire film. There isn't much action for a long hero movie and it is hard to know what is even going on in most of the fights. The CGI isn't great either and it is downright terrible in a few parts. For Marvel movies the villain is probably one of the better ones, but he still wasn't that great. The movie was really boring at parts, so it had some pacing issues. There was a guy behind me that even fell asleep about halfway through the movie. Expand

A culturally relevant- and long overdo- blockbuster film featuring a superhero based on a highly underrepresented minority; bravo for that. Trouble is, Black Panther just isn’t a good movie.

I’m sure some of my disappointment stems from the fact that I haven’t had the crushing experience of consuming media my entire life wherein the protagonist doesn’t resemble me, then finally seeing a mega-budget Hollywood spectacle featuring a superhero who does (I’m white). I can intellectualize it- and think it must be a revelation- but I’m not able to truly feel the same weight of the film that an African-American might.

Unable to fully absorb the film’s weight, I’m left to judge the movie solely on its merits as entertainment. I’m sure the movie loses something when those two things are divorced from one another, but for better or worse, it’s the only perspective I’ve got.

Black Panther’s acting was hit or miss, the action sequences were shot in a way that made them nearly impossible to follow (even a massive suspension of disbelief isn’t enough to get over the total obliteration of physics), and while the storyline was fairly straightforward, it’s presented in a superficial and confusing way with zero emotional impact. Also, there’s a special material that’s central to the plot and it’s beyond ridiculous. The stuff can very literally just do and be anything and everything the script calls for, it’s a bridge way, way, way too far. On the plus side, the setting was unique and impressive and the women warriors were portrayed as fierce, highly intelligent and principled. And, of course, Andy Serkis was his usual scene stealing self.

It’s a Marvel movie- and a subpar one at that- only elevated by its cultural significance (which, however, shouldn’t be the least bit minimized).

I don't understand at all the metascore because I just went to see it and this is not the above 80 points movie. Chadwick Boseman (who was just fantastic when he played James Brown) is blunt, so is Michael B Jordan, Angela Basset and Forrest Whitaker are just useless. Only the lead female characters had some life ! The story is slow paced and full of clichés. The Execs at Disney need to bring back guys like Sam Raimi and Jon Favreau to blow some freshness in these movies like the first Iron Man. And those who compared it to James Bond (because of the car chase.... but in J.B. it's done by real stuntmen not CGI) or the Dark Night is high on drugs ! Is it because it's the first superhero movie with a black character that no one wants to give it a real critic ? It's like when you're kid sings in front of you and you're like "you're so great" but deep inside you're like "My god it was awful" ... it's your child so you're not going to criticize !! Expand

I guess the studio pushed the racism train with their 99% Black cast, and everyone jumped onboard. To bad that everyone whom commented on Black actors/actresses as having more (or less) value than anyone else, proved they still have some work to do in understanding what racism is. I saw a lot of talented people being wasted on a very lazy story, that tried to claim Vibranium is not only stronger than Adamantium (which it is not according to Marvel), but is the key to unlocking Star Trek level tech across the board. The overall effect is just to jump the shark and begs the question, where the hell were these guys/gals when the world was about to be destroyed the last few times? I guess they did not think Wakanda was actually on the planet? Whee....? Expand

Well forget that because this is the Black Panther movie we deserve. Early reactions have been the most positive for a superhero movie in years and as it stands it’s currently the most positively reviewed superhero movie of all time. How’s that for high expectations. So I must admit I’m a little disappointed, for me it has been overhyped to unrealistic expectations. Not as good as I was hoping for and still one of the better solo Marvel movies but I wasn’t blown away at any point.

T’Challa aka the Black Panther aka the new King of Wakanda played by Chadwick Boseman returns home to his technologically advanced African nation that’s hidden from the rest of the world. Because the rest of the world cannot know about the vibranium and all the futuristic machines and weapons they possess because that could cause war and Wakanda are a peaceful nation who don’t want to wage war on the rest of the world even though with all their superpowered vibranium weapons they’d win easily. Anyway enter Andy Serkis and Michael B. Jordan. Also starring Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett. The cast are absolutely perfect, my only criticism is I needed more of Andy Serkis, his manic performance was great and he seemed underused. Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira give standout performances and add that extra wow factor to the action sequences. It’s got the story even though it reminded me of The Lion King / Shakespeare on more than one occasion. Even when everything else around it is a bit over powering the story-line is solid and doesn’t become an over the top mess as is the downfall of recent superhero films. It also has a great villain, with clear motives and nothing ridiculous about him. Honestly I was very concerned when the film first started because I found the opening scene to be one of the most underwhelming scenes to start a superhero movie. That aside, the rest of the film makes up for it. The action sequences are terrific and thoroughly enjoyable even if the film itself didn’t really blow me away. Maybe it came down to all the hype or maybe it was the ridiculous CGI armoured rhinos. It’s not brilliant, I liked it but more importantly you’ll be entertained. Visually stunning and the soundtrack was excellent. Black Panther is a prime example of a good stand alone superhero movie and it’s recommended for all you superhero fans out there.

One on hand, the critics are raving for this movie, saying it is a "game-changer" and things of the sort, but on the other hand, we have regular people saying the movie is "decent". I, like the majority of those that have seen this film, would have to agree that it is simply...decent. I cannot disagree more with the critics when they say that this movie is "game-changing" and "revolutionary", because if you get past the nice visual effects, this film is rather dull, not to mention cliché.

Not even half an hour into this film, I found myself wanting it to end, or at least begin living up to the hype, but the unfortunate truth is that something of the sort never came around. The action was really the only thing keeping this movie afloat, that and the visual effects which seem to be the best part of this production. At times I was simply in awe of how beautiful some of the scenery was, only for that admiration to be decimated by your classic superhero-movie-moment, or, perhaps even worse, a very cheesy joke. In my opinion, the dialogue is so bad, it rivals the Star Wars prequels, and that is an accusation I would never take lightly.

So, if you're like me and have been a huge fan of the MCU, definitely see this film because you won't feel like you wasted time on this film. Keep in mind, however, no matter what the critics say, there is nothing that this film does that has not been done in nearly every single superhero film to date. Not revolutionary, simply entertaining.

Anyways. The movie is fine. Its only probably the most boring one in the entire MCU (not the worst).

Between:
1) fanboys that would love a black screen with the Marvel logo
2) critics that would love any movie with this type of cast
3) critics paid (not literally) by Disney
4) people that laugh at "what are thooooose" type of jokes

this movie was going to be overrated.

The villain COULDve been great. It wasn't. It just was better than the average Marvel villain. I get why. He had a point, so by making it a psycho (kills anybody that gets in the way and cant form any kind of relationship because he's broken and all he has is hate blablal) makes it easier to relativize the revolution ideas.

The hero could've been great. He couldve been this guy which needed tons of help to lead his people, but at least he was strong.
NOPE. He's weak and without the help of his little sister he would be dead. GREAT!

And then the scenes in the ethereal world. MY GOD. What a boring waste of time (except the last scene, which should've been the only one there).

Other than that, typical funny movie!

I have to say that this was by far the most boring MCU film to date. I was not expecting much when I went to theater, but the film still managed to disappoint me. This is not to say that you cannot be entertained by it, but the perceived greatness relies heavily on the type lens you have. This film, like all other MCU films, got nothing to do with reality, it is a fantasy movie. The setting is somewhat interesting, but even as a fantasy, it forces suspension of disbelief. We know from history that an isolationist state like depicted in the film would not be able to exist. It would stagnate and most likely fall to tyranny at some point. This is conveniently explained away with magic (Vibranium), which makes it slightly more palatable. The film also introduces host of new characters to MCU, which are a mixed bag at best. Some of them are quite cringe worthy, some are not believable, while others do indeed put a solid performance and have development during the film. The plot is probably the strong point of the film. Some will not like it, as it is quite different from other MCU films. However, I did enjoy the plot more than the other parts of the film.

Aesthetically the film was pleasing. However, the over reliance on CGI is noticeable and poorly done at times. The film also lacks action scenes and the few that we have are not very well done. The combination of color, CGI and editing makes some of the scenes look very cartoonish and hard to follow.

I would still recommend the film. Lower your expectation and don't believe the professional film critics. They seems to be outright lying or pandering to perceived audience. It is pathetic.

Somehow it's being talked about as 'important', but for all its well-intended and rather limited redress of colonialism, it's really more of the same in another form. For some reason, all the actors are forced to use an exaggerated 'nowhere we know in Africa' accent, that makes it about as progressive as an episode of 'Allo 'Allo. It's a curious Western fantasy of high-technology, magic weapons, and mag-lev trains, but also of people who are ruled just as much by violence, monarchy and tradition (while maintaining an abiding love of ceremony, mask-wearing, totemic animals, dancing, patterned fabrics and riding armour plated Rhinos). Therefore it's assumptions are largely shaped by the very colonialism it apparently sets out to critique. What it probably does reveal is a confusion around attitudes to Africa at the border of US identity politics. The resulting mess is interesting to think about, but as a film is over-long and crawls to a somewhat predictable end. However, by playing the game of positing a mythical technically superior African nation, it both reshapes Africa to be like the West, while revealing that it is the only standard it thinks anything is worth measuring something by. Even the idea of Africa bringing 'aid' to America was wasted in sincerity, rather than rye satire. Again this is because it honours the foreign saviour myth it really should have done a job of demystifying. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the first act. The scene in the casino with that one dude that was missing an arm was really entertaining, and I was hoping for more action of the main characters fighting in other countries. But, they just kind of ended that abruptly and went in a completely different direction with the plot. The first villain was entertaining and had a funny personality. The second villain was stupid and his personality was just revenge. The love side plot was predictable, but not distracting to the story. They did a good job of explaining the backstory of the country and the whole deal with the father and his brother. The ending was **** and got confusing. I liked most of the characters, music, and design of the futuristic dealies. The ending was the main thing that ruined for me. I liked where it was going in the beginning, but over all... It wasn't as good as Dr. Strange. Expand

That third act, Attack of the Clones bad (the rhinos). Humour landed like a brick to the face and the jury is still out whether Boseman doesn't have cue cards when he reads his lines. Also someone please stop Martyn Freeman from ever doing an American accent again.

It was a shame about all the political agenda garbage they shoe horned in. It added nothing to the film and sometimes it was just lazy racist jibes, seemed really out of place for a Marvel film.

200 million budget, I don't know what they spent it on. It definitely wasn't that windows 95 CGI or the 3 to 4 tiny sets they made for the entire film.

Plus point is that Disney did another Casino based scene and it didn't suck arse. The South Korea bit was great and Micheal B Jordan redeemed himself from Fan4stic. The hard line Army General actress (don't know her name) was a show stealer for me.

One of the weaker ones so far, weakest of phase 3 by a stretch. Shame because I was hyped for it and came out really disappointed. 5/10.

You won't see anything new in this movie that Marvel hasn't already done. Acting is poor, CGI is the worst in MCU. You could predict what will happen in the end after seeing the first 15 minutes of it.
Black Panther was much more epic in Civil War.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disney did a good job marketing this movie to put emotion into it. The irony in Black Panther is that it is a film about exploiting the resources of Africa, without actually going to Africa and using Disney money to stimulate any economy there. Africa is a beautiful continent, and would have been an amazing backdrop. Unfortunately, Black Panther's backdrop is a green screen. Some gadgetry did not make any sense as anything conveyed by hologram could have equally been a text message, the "sneakers" never seemed to work, and it only takes a joystick to fly a plane?

The plot? Much like Hamlet, if the King and Denmark won. Black Panther becomes the worst king of Wakanda, loses his throne to a viable competitor. His family are sore losers, and lead a revolution to stop the king from sharing the secret of Wakanda. Once they win, they then share the secrets of Wakanda...

The lesson Disney is conveying is to not battle the powers to be, because they have better weapons.

Overall, only see Marvel if there's multiple heroes in it. Only see DC if there's one.

And Shaft was entertaining, also for a white kid like me. I didn't see skincolours. I felt a bit relegated to the Blacksploitation era of Shaft, when I watched this movie. Sure it was entertaining. Sure the actors were ok. Sure the story was ok. And again, it served its purpose. It kept me entertained. But it wasn't precisely high art. It was just entertaining.

If You expect politics with this one, better know your real world politics first. Wakanda is pretty much as Nationalistic as South Africa was during Apartheid. So please. Try to leave the politics out of it and see it as entertainment.

I really went into it expecting to see one of the best movies that the MCU has to offer and I left extremely disappointed. Nothing in this particular movie stands out as special except for the fact that it is about a superhero who is black. The fact that this is up for best picture is an absolute shame and warrants an apology from the academy. It is nothing more than just another hype train of a film escalated by the fact that it did something as "different" as have a predominantly black cast lead it. It's "Moonlight" all over again! I honestly feel that "Blankman" was a better black superhero movie than this overrated hunk of mediocrity. Expand

This one has kinda ok villain and nice Boseman acting, but besides that everything is mediocre or worse. Plot feels really generic (well it's origin story, so it could be predicted), CGI sometimes is really terrible (like last battle) and can't really find something more than lead actor charisma.

It's like critical affirmative action and actually insulting to serious black artists in all media to overpraise such junk just to be PC. I never go to Marvel films, so maybe they are all as cheesy as this, for all I know. But this movie has pathetic production values compared to Star Wars A-list movies, for example. But at the heart of the film is simply preposterous nonsense. It's pathetic that some African Americans seem to find the movie somehow uplifting or inspiring. It will be great if the movie teaches black kids that STEM courses might be cool, so they should work hard in school. But what's with the fantasy that there's a magic African country that bears no relationship whatsoever to the real black African world? The late great black cultural critic Stanley Crouch used to talk about how African Americans need to stop being "lost" by orienting themselves strictly to the truth and reality as their only hope for actual advancement for themselves individually and for their race in America. The silly fantasies of Black Panther are a step backward into flattering fantasies of lostness, instead of a serious grappling with things within the black community holding blacks back. Expand

I was so disapponted that I had decided to write a short review. The movie is average. What I don´t understand is professional rating that gives a very high number. For what...?
It is true that this movie is unique because of 90% of actors in this blockbuster are blacks. I have never seen such movie before and I don´t mean it is a bad idea. But only this fact can not make from movie a good movie. At least I got this feeling.
The story is stupid. Actor's performances are average. English-African accent is irritating after 5 minutes. The contrast of the rich and technologically advanced mini country in poor Africa is ridiculous. Scenes from Korea are a parody of secret agent movies. Costumes generally fit into some adult movies. Another Black panther. No, thank!

TheCGI is poorly blended and it sticks out like a sore thumb when the cast is clearly standing on the green screen during several scenes throughout the film. The plot is pretty basic as well and does nothing to be even slightly original. The cast is rather so-so as well. I enjoyed Boseman and Jordan as the leads, Freeman and Serkis played wonderful supporting parts but everyone else seemed kind of awkwardly out of place and it didn't really click well on-screen. There was no real chemistry and it shows. The action scenes were probably the only real enjoyment this film had to offer and even those were kind of boring at times and again, The CGI painfully out of place.

Honestly, This has to be one of the most overrated films in recent years. I think the fact that it's the first black superhero film to come out during the superhero film kick (not ignoring Blade) really overhyped it. And the user reviews show that IMO. You don't have a near 2 overall score drop out of over 2000 reviews if that wasn't the case. It's an alright movie worth renting but not worth owning because there honestly isn't one real stand out thing about it, Aside from the superhero being black.

The movie, from opening to closing, is special effects whether between the actors or in the background or car chases, battle sequences, even in hand to hand combats. Talking about things like fights and car chases, why have one of each when you can have two? Also, let’s have two villains instead of one plus instead of an all-white cast with one, maybe two faces of color, here we have an all-black cast with two white faces.

As with other sci-fi movies this runs around 20 minutes too long but this, in a way, distinguishes itself by having 2or 3 more storylines, even going for Shakespearean plots here and there of kings and queens, family treachery and rivalry. All in all, at certain times it gets convoluted and you just have to shake your head and skip on to the next special effect.

Chadwick Boseman does a fine job as the Black Panther but Winston Duke who challenges Boseman and is another Black Panther at times, except for the shifting color of his costume, makes a good rival. The two scene stealers are Andy Serkis as an over the top villain and Letitia Wright as Boseman’s sister who can cracks jokes that are hilarious, that make you laugh out loud and can walk into any James Bond film as Q and steal that movie from Bond.

Also in the cast are Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Daniel Kaluuyya, Lupita Nyong’o and Sterling K. Brown. It was directed by Ryan Coogler, who also wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, with a lo0t of help- from the editors Michael P. Shawver and Debbie Berman.

Along with Letitia Wright the musical score by Ludwig Goransson are the two outstanding features of the movie.

“Black Panther” will obviously appeal to the millions of sci-fi fans and Marvel comic followers and by the same token not appeal to the rest, like me!

Nothing special going on... A generic love story, one interesting and one boring villain, an apocalypse kind of story mixed with cringeworthy dialouge and bad CGI.

Now for the more controversial part; "The Black oppression myth" as I like to call it.

Hang on, I do know the history of slavery in the Americas, but it's not about that. Black Panther has a black superiority and victimhood complex. The characters of the movie joke around with words like "colonizer" and "white boy" (to make them look immature) frequently. They (the villains) aren't shy about talking of a global white genocide either.

Basically; this movie's plot is of a prince becoming king of a fantastical hidden african country with super strict border controls and tribal culture together with alien like technology...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The same film heralded, largely rightfully, as a triumph in social justice and racial equality is also tragically-written. Ironically, the villains are killed or silenced alongside the theme of black liberation, an outcome demonized enough for the most advanced black cultures in the world to slaughter one another over their weapons being used to crush the oppression that economically, socially, technologically and geographically strangles the rest of the world's black cultures, even avoiding saving the world and instead entrusting this task to a white guy inexperienced with their technology.

Disney's opportunistic marketing would seem to be largely responsible for its box office success, alongside public discontent being easily pacified with commercial purchases. This seems more plausible than an indication of Hollywood becoming accessible to minorities or less racist.

It was another dumb comic book movie and maybe not a great choice as a cultural icon of our time, though the obvious qualities of its largely-black cast and the achievement of Hollywood blockbuster diversity are intact. This was a rather average couple hours of cultural appropriation as I was told what to care about, even when the rather poorly-written-and-oft-acted alleged supervillain wasn't talking smack like someone who enjoys cold, plain oatmeal. I find it appalling that critics are heaping praise upon that performance. The female characters, and even title character, I have few complaints about, if any, as they exist in the confines of this story. They are well-acted and largely well-written.

Observe, however, as they butcher both the sequence of major plot points and the villain's otherwise understandable motivations (black freedom and vengeance), often with the cheap, lazy, typical Hollywood blockbuster writing and acting of 90% of his lines and character development. This was a below-average Marvel flick from our friends at Disney.

This movie is monumental for a couple reasons, the irony of this being commodified cultural appropriation aside. The inarguably necessary potential advancements for representation in major media a la Obama in politics (we have been simultaneously bombing these seven countries and leading all five of these wars since well before he left office) and the blatant blaxploitation.

You can't just throw Huey P. on a wall in Oakland projects, give the character gold fronts and a dead father, speak in slang, have him kill and assault a few women, not to mention hundreds of others, blacks among them by his own admission, before demonstrating his combat prowess in ritual ceremony and expect absolution, nor for the mood to be empathetic and redemptive, some much-needed homecoming nor reunion. It was a bit telling how at the climax, all the black characters are fighting each other, instead of the oppression they speak of throughout the movie. Black liberation dies with the villains. Further, the son kills his brother-cousin just as his father manslaughtered his uncle and the task of directly stopping the escape and imminent activation of Wakanda's collective ultra-advanced weaponry with a futuristic Augmented Virtual Reality Remote piloting system is given to a white guy, allowing him to operate a spaceship he has never flown in because he used to be a pilot, who then completes the task without further sacrifice beyond his previous bullet to the spine to save the Panther's sister. It felt too reminiscent of African American history, outside of media let alone inside it, to sit well, despite the paternally and historically separated son uniting with brothers and sisters in his ancestral homeland in not-Africa. Because he was an ****

Other notes: I dug all the dream sequences during the ceremonies as well. The costumes were fantastic. The capital city of Wakanda (or was the city itself Wakanda?) did make one wonder what a major city would look like in Africa if it weren't overtaken. The friend I watched it with had no idea that either the General and Rhino Master (no affection shown for each other besides a couple lines throughout, which also completely nullified any drama when he lays down his weapon at her demand without event) were a thing nor that Michael 'G. Boredom' and his supposed Bonnie were a thing. Her getting merc'd didn't have enough setup to work emotionally - just more wanton misogynistic violence. Choosing the REAL villain twist probably required more effort being put into Killmonger, as I thought Claue was well-setup by that time in a great a performance by Andy Serkis, as himself.

Seriously, this movie is boring, slow paced, very naive (story) and cheap made - I really struggled to find any positive side to it and barely had any fun watching it. One of the worst of the MCU.

Not good.
Ok, to be honest, is not a bad movie, but... i don't know is just is not good enought.
The history is so plain, and the character's background... so simple

Start and ending are boring and generic although picks up well in the middle, cgi is fairly dated and the pacing makes this movie feel too long. Wouldn't recommend to anyone but for 3.50 it was OK, I'm sure Disney & Marvel will mage their money back.

Lots of great elements and performances (all of the female leads are outstanding), but they're all suffocated under the standard-issue Marvel endless blurry action and needless bombast.
I'd say it was a huge disappointment, but I really wasn't interested in the movie until the so-called critics did their weird-ass gushing thing. Speaking of critics -- the f**k is wrong with all of you? Seriously. Do your jobs or quit. Right now, you're all just professional turd-polishers for a multinational corporate behemoth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. Everyone treats it as this cultural phenomenon. The truth is, actually, that its very mediocre. Compared to other MCU films, this is one of the worst. T'Challa is extremely boring and uninteresting in this movie. The character motivations don't make sense at all. Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger (the highlight of this movie) has good intentions and wants to treat poverty in the rest of the world. Black Panther wants to stop him. The motivations are flipped. The side characters are stale and their jokes don't hit at all. The movie does a good job of using Andy Serkis's and Michael B. Jordan's acting skills but forgets about the rest of the cast. Also, the CGI. What the **** was that **** A movie with a $200 million budget shouldn't look like someone drew it in "Paint". It is absolutely embarrassing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is shockingly bad, considering how late it comes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I have a lot to go through, but the short version is that if you're looking for anything other than a time-killer this will probably disappoint you.

Let's get one thing out of the way: while Black Panther is undeniably cool and sets a standard for diversity, the entire premise of Wakanda is troubled. I can't knock the movie too much for this, considering they must have wanted to stay true to the source material. But it would all have gone down a lot easier if Wakanda's timeline was shortened to a few generations. It is simply too big a pill to swallow to believe a super-advanced society has existed for millenia while Africa has been getting **** over. Your mileage may vary on this, but personally I hoped the movie would make this aspect more palatable.

The first thing I noticed was the movie's poor cinematography and awful CGI. The opening action setpiece takes place at night, and you'll just have to imagine what is happening because no amount of adjusting the picture will let you see anything. Obviously it's a challenge to portray a man dressed all in black stealthily taking out some bad guys at night. But a more gifted filmmaker would have found a way to at least imply BP's movement (i.e. muzzle flashes or moonlight glinting off the shiny parts of his suit) in the scene. This is by far the worst example, though the final battle against Killmonger is also a bit confusing. However, the movie in general has a lot of static shots that just don't bring any dynamism. The CGI in the entire movie is poor and really sours the amazing choreography. By comparison, the opening CGI story of Wakanda and the scenes in the Ancestral Realm fit those scene much better.

The story isn't awful as a whole, but it clearly needed a rewrite to focus all the elements. As it is, the movie is part origin story, part coming-of-age, part social commentary, part comeback tale--but not one element feels satisfying. It's good that the movie is ambitious enough to give each of its plotlines room to develop, but in the end nothing bears fruit in a movie that is overlong.

The acting is generally fine, at least as much as could be with the poor writing. None of the characters have much depth, so each scene relies heavily on plot to move it forward rather than any human elements that engage the audience. The only exception is Michael B. Jordan, who seemed to really get into his character's head. Unfortunately his villain makes some pretty outlandish leaps in logic by the end and it's hard to sympathize with him. The two other standouts were Letitia Wright as Shuri and Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue. Both seem to be having a lot of fun with their respective roles and light up the screen when they're on it. Chadwick Boseman, unfortunately, falls short of being charismatic, rarely stepping beyond "noble hero" territory.

Black Panther isn't the worst movie ever made, not even the worst MCU movie out there. But considering how much the MCU has matured in 10 years, it is surprisingly devoid of nuance and originality. I hope future entries in this character's story find their footing and boldness since the potential is clearly there both in the source material and the assembled cast present here.

Danai Gurira and Daniel Kaluuya stole the scenes. The film rightly boasts of stunning effects and breathtaking imagination but it misses out on complex nuances for the modern world, how fighting to death for a throne is inherently regressive; glorifying monarchy and war should hardly be the biggest selling point of a culture. The storytelling isn't compelling enough even though the visuals are. The good news about Black Panther is that it is a huge cultural and political moment for the United States. The bad news is that it could have been written a little bit better and had more to offer in the plot and pace. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rather bad, over hyped.
I was putting a lot of hope in that movie, and I guess as a lot of people I was really hyped about it. But in the end, the movie was too long, boring, and with a poor scenario. Luckily the special effects and dresses were good, but overall acting was really bad...

About acting : M.B.Jordan and D.Gurira acting were good, C.Boseman was ok. While W.Duke and L.Wright were quite bad. The other were just... transparent. But I think this come more from the directing than the actors themselves. I think Ryan Coogler as a big part in this overall poor acting, the actors were probably not "push" and just easy with their acting..

About dressing : This is the best part of the movie, lot of nice dresses, colorfoul, designed, mixed, interesting.

Visual effects : Between good and bad.. The actions were too fast and even blur on screen for the panther, and CGI was crap, really amateur. But big group action in daylight were better and pleasant to watch, even though not extraordinary.

Music : I guess it is a matter of taste, I enjoyed it but.. it was a bit too much sometime and always the same, which in the end was almost getting annoying.

Scenario : BAD. I think scenario and poor acting just ruined the movie (with directing). The movie was too long, while you can resume it in 10s. It was the typical bad people steal good people, then a bad guy try to conquest a good guy throne, then in the end the good guy win. There was a bit of political, mixing poor punchline "your ancestor stole mine", "bring in another little white guy"(I am translating from french), "I would rather die like my ancestor", so not developped at all and really cheesy. The characters were also not developed at all, except maybe Killmonger, what a waste.
And what about the joke ?? I didn't even smiled, it was just BAD. Like this one "I will eat you blabla... kidding we are vegan" like seriously ?? Was it written by a 7 yo kid ??

Conclusion : Good special effects, good dresses, bad acting, bad scenario, bad jokes and punchline, and I guess very bad directing. Resulting in one of the worst Marvel, at the same level of transformers or last iron-man. Disapointing and over-hyped.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say, while it is an entertaining movie, it is not the monstruous marvel most people are claming it out to be. I don't know if it was the fact that the Black Panther was teased and introduced in Civil War in a way that made me heighten my expectations, but I came out heavily disappointed.

The visuals are good, taking out some details here and there, but while I was expecting them to elaborate more on T'Challa's character, I found out it was just an empty shell when it came to character development and an engaging plot. I honestly expected a lot more than I've got, and there wasn't a single redeeming quality throughout the film that could save it. It seems that it was placed to glorify black actors that, while they have been underappreciated, it just was made in such a way that turned overall ridiculous, like a sort of 'empowerment' and 'coolness' that just wasn't there because the writers didn't bother with a well-developed script. They could have made a much more interesting story out of what they had to work with, and instead it just felt like a b-side to merely set some background for what's to come (infinity war).

T'Challa's character was bland and uninteresting, lacked a backbone and depth. A major disappointment, since he was depicted differently in CACW. Nakia was plain as well, which I found unfair for such a talented actress, and while they tried to make her more at some points, I felt like their efforts fell flat. Her kiss at the end with the king had as much chemistry as the one between Sharon and Steve in CACW. I wish they stopped pushing pointless 'romantic' relationships and focused more on the characters as complex people and their development.

Shuri was so-so. I feel like I would have liked her more if they'd worked more on her, but whatever. The villain's motivations where aimless and clichéd, and I feel like everyone is trying to make him more than what he really is. A resented child in a disfunctional home who thinks it's okay to bend everyone to their will because he says so. Boring.

The rest of the characters... don't even ask me. When you make the secondary characters be as uninteresting as they managed here, despite having good things to work with, you know you're doing a **** job.

(By the way, Okoye and W'Kabi's relationship? Pointless, unnecessary, they tried to add depth to their actions by taking this shortcut. No wonder it failed).

Overall, it was entertaining, the kind of entertaining you find a movie on a sunday when you're home bored and have nothing else to watch. Eat some popcorn, watch some mindless entertainment. I think actually some movies should be made for the sake of entertainment alone, but not all of them. And honestly? This sort of crossed the line.
