This isn’t going to win best movie of the year but for a Marvel movie, I really enjoyed it (& I’ve skipped a lot the recent ones).

After a fantastic introduction in Civil War the Black Panther standalone film is finally here. It forgoes the more traditional superhero approach in favor of a more personal conflict. While there are still plenty of connections to the larger world of the MCU surrounding Wakanda, this is the most self-contained Marvel film in quite some time. There's no world-ending threat looming over the protagonist's head. It's just a man dealing with his new position of power and the sins of the past while trying to decide the future of his people.

The representation is fantastic. Black Panther opens up a culture we don't often get to see portrayed onscreen and never at this grand a scale or wide-reaching capability. Wakanda is a fantastic place and the costume design is spot-on. There are a lot of small touches that make it one of the more memorable corners of the MCU. A shame about that CGI though. I noticed around Civil War that the special effects in Marvel films have started to get decidedly less special. All the CGI costumes are quite obvious and you can notice the occasional green screen. Black Panther is another unfortunate victim of this. Although the movie is largely gorgeous, moments like the final one-on-one conflict look really bad. Marvel needs to get it's act together in this area again.

Director/co-writer Ryan Coogler wears his inspirations on his sleeve. This doesn't feel like your typical superhero movie. The grand sci-fi elements and plethora of characters give it a vibe and appearance similar to that of the Star Wars prequel films. The battle for the throne complete with family treachery calls to mind The Lion King (so no, not just because of the setting). Then there's that scene where T'Challa is introduced to his new gadgets that's ripped straight out of a James bond flick. With so many different styles of film on display Black Panther brings some needed diversity to film in more ways than one.

I was kept engaged by the likable characters, cool Wakandan culture, and the solid action sequences. Unfortunately the plot didn't do as much to entertain. Things really don't pick up until Killmonger finally takes center stage and drags the attention away from Andy Serkis (who by the way is cool to see in person for once). Before that everything feels like what would be the opening sequence in any other Marvel movie. Only here it's like they couldn't choose just one, so they decided to cram all the different takes in and pad out the running time. Not only does Jordan give a fantastic performance, but his character's arrival gives the story some much needed focus, an actual threat, and bumps things up from the initial snail's pace. Killmonger's motivations and backstory also allow Black Panther to talk about some social and political issues. As per the norm with the MCU though, he's still an underdeveloped villain.

Ultimately, Black Panther was a little harder to dive into than I was expecting/hoping it would be. There's are so many new things, concepts, and people introduced that there's not enough time for all of it to breath. The majority of the supporting character's go painfully underdeveloped. A shame as many of them are portrayed by fantastic actors and actresses. We never get to experience the full depths of their relationships to and with T'Challa or find out their place in the world. Something that makes deaths noticeable less significant. Then there's what a dull ride it can be at first. However if you get past this there's a remarkable culture on display and the typical superhero movie fun to be had. It's just of the more uneven entries in the MCU overall. Surprisingly the most interesting aspects of Black Panther are the ones related to the throne. Boseman's performance does a good job of capturing the character's internal conflicts and watching the character struggle with what kind of ruler he's going to be gives the film it's heart and makes it worth watching.

Good but not great. The African theme is great but the story itself is no better or worse than other superhero movies. I think this movie is getting more positive press because of political correctness.

Following T'Chaka's death his son T'Challa returns to the advanced, but secretive, African nation of Wakanda to assume the throne. Unfortunately this transition is not going to be a peaceful one.

The Black Panther is a good film but, after seeing so many extremely positive reviews, I couldn’t help but come away a little disappointed. The significant use of African culture and traditions does make a pleasant change from the over familiar New York setting, perhaps doing more than anything else to set it apart from other Marvel movies. There is also no shortage of interesting characters, including one of the most interesting ‘bad guys’ in Micheal B Jordan’s Erik. Personally however I found the pacing to be a little uneven at times and there was more than one occasion where a felt a little disinterested in proceedings. Overall the action scenes were also somewhat lacking compared to the best the Marvel movies have offered in the past and it was actually a little difficult to see what was going on during some of the fights with so many quick camera cuts. A good movie but not as entertaining as the best Marvel has offered over the past decade or so.

I really liked the actress who was basically this films version of James Bond's Q. It has a solid story and tells it well. Better than most Marvel films. Better but not the best. Because when it comes to deeper themes and meaning, there is just something lacking. Something Logan and a few of the Batman movies has managed to deliver. So don't tell me there is no room for that stuff in a comic book film. That stuff makes a great comic book film. Without it, this one is merely pretty good. Expand

The action and effects are mostly effective. The world and tech are undeniably cool. The protagonist and antagonist are both supremely well-developed. But where a lot of the other recent Marvel solo outings fell short, this one does as well. The plot is at times questionably paced and not entirely well-thought-out. Some stylistic choices here and there either sucked me out of the experience or rubbed me the wrong way. And the humor, while definitely more toned down in this than in other recent solo flicks, also became grating over time. Still, "Black Panther" is not a bad film. Maybe close to great, even. But it's also yet another solo Marvel film that's left me with the same conclusion - the team-up's are still the most to me entertaining as of late. Expand

Like my review's first few sentences, they just seem like they could be worded in a more coherent fashion. Fight scenes were definitely fun to watch although i did not enjoy some of the scenes filmed at night because the camera work was too shaky and it was hard to tell exactly what was taking place on the screen. Third act had some great camera work and great fight scenes however. The story was quite linear; you knew the entire time where story would lead, what the "twist" would be and how it would be resolved. All in all, it was another decent entry in MCU. One thing i always complained about when it comes to MCU movies is their color contrast or rather lack of it. This movie did have moment of vibrant colors mixed into its cinematography which made it more fun and appealing to watch. Comedy was present as it always is in MCU but this movie was able to go a good job keeping the tone serious since it was warranted considering the plot. There were a couple of points in the movie where it felt a bit slow and felt dragged on especially in the second act but picked up near the end which made up for it. It doesn't necessarily have to be seen in theaters but def is worth a watch if you are action movie genre fan and especially if you are a superhero/mcu fan. Expand

The greatest thing I can say about this movie, is that it corrects the train wreck of Thor Ragnarok. I was almost ready to write off the MCU after that movie. Black Panther prevented this.

Trying to be as spoiler free as possible, this movie has many good points, but few, but GLARING problems. The movie is a classic Marvel movie along the lines of Phase 1. Good job.

The director is a bit short of experience and it shows. Pacing wasn't great, but not as bad as some have noted. The views and scenes were just not quite what was probably intended. I don't think he could quantify what his vision was. Experience will eventually give him the ability to make some great scenes in the future when he learns to quantify his vision.

This is also revelatory in the horrible mish-mash of CG. There were a dozen studio of various skill. You get some great looking CG and then others near Spawn level horrible CG. It doesn't appear that he had the capacity to tell people they suck and do it again, or get fired. This could be either through confidence, or communication.

The story was typical of what you would expect from Phase 1 Marvel movies. Set up the hero, give him a moral conundrum to find his own inner goodness, challenge the hero with an outside nemesis, earn redemption and establish his goodness to the audience. This was done relatively well and only failed in execution, though minimally. Almost 90% of the movie was well done Marvel.

I heard that Micheal B. Jordan's performance was of the show stealing variety, but only because many of the others were a bit lackluster. Even Chadwick Boseman wasn't a stand out. Many characters were just expositional players. Honestly, if it weren't such a small part, Andy Serkis was the show stealer.

Thankfully, comedy was just right. Not over the top, slapstick and not under cooked one liners. There were a bad bit of snark, but not cringy. The overall pacing of the comedy was perfect.

The WORST part was the music. Again, I think it might be a part of the lack of experience of the director, Ryan Coogler and a bit of nepotism. Ludwig Göransson was in charge of many of Googler's previous films music. The music was just haphazard. The times when it should have been sympathetic, was just barely acceptable. Then you have the downright jarring. When I notice the music and it is discordant to the scene, it drops you out of the story. I think a stronger, more experienced hand in the driver's seat would have done the movie better.

All in all, this was among the better of the Marvel origin movies. It wasn't too cliche, but a definite PLUS ONE for fan service. This was a quality entrance to the world of the Black Panther. If there was just a bit more experience from the director, we might have seen an 8, possibly even a 9 with the correct music department. Perhaps choosing people based on quality, rather than nepotism. Just because your buddy helped you in your last film, doesn't qualify them to be the right person for this movie.

Then to the people who want this to be a symbol for them, well as Georgie says, "I leave symbols, to the symbol minded."

Also, too bad that the coolest dude in the movie prays Hanuman, the white monkey, who is an Hindu God and has nothing to do with Africa at all, nice one Disney, who cares, as long as it's not a caucasian God, right ? Not to mention that destroying the idea of El Dorado is kinda a show of disrespect towards latin america and Aztek / Mayan cultures.

Not the best Marvel movie by far (Deadpool, Logan, Thor Ragnarok, last guardians...) but not the worst either.

The cast and characters are great, Ryan Coogler's direction is impressive as always and Michael B Jordan really stole the show for me, quickly becoming one of Marvel's best and most likable villains for me. Visually, this film is also impressive with it showing great care in displaying the vibrant culture thats represented in the film. Most of the problems in this film, for me revolve around its second half where I really felt like its becomes too caught up into itself as it doesn't take any risks and wastes opportunities to really carve out Erik Killamonger as the villian I envisioned him to be behind Jordan's intense, focused and rage fueled performance. All in all, its a pretty good movie, go see it but don't get caught up in the unfair expectations that the media have placed unto the film. Overall score: B- Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Now that I'm far distanced from all the social media vitriol circulating from both fans and critics of this film (which in its time was horribly damaging and hurt a lot of friendships and race-relations, let's not forget), I can view this film a bit more objectively. For me, this is one of the better films of the MCU. It has a complex villain with motivations that aren't cliche, and the film touches on real-world issues that are relevant. That said, they do this rather clumsily at times and there are moments that really hurt the film's maturity level and could easily alienate viewers, as they have some jokes and comments in there that really feel like cheap jabs at white people from the filmmakers. The joke "another broken white boy for me to fix. this should be fun" presents a double-standard where if it was a person of another race and their race was mentioned like this, it would offend people. Maybe they should've just stuck to "American" instead of "white boy". It's demeaning to call a grown man a "white boy". I don't think the MCU is an appropriate venue for racial humor. I might have laughed at this in an adult-targeted film. I can take a joke, but in a film that is seen by general audiences this feels misplaced and irresponsible. Same can be said for when one of the protagonists calls the white guy a "colonizer", and that horribly cringey scene where the white guy gets censored by Wakandans barking like apes who will not allow him to speak. It's just plain weird and doesn't even really make sense in the context of the movie.

Aside from that though, I feel like the film has a lot of heart, poses challenging questions, gives, for the most part, reasonable answers, and has a lot of visual wonder and charm (though the quality of art and effects definitely wavers between astonishing and made-for-TV looking). A good film in the MCU, but with some problematic moments, but mostly good. One of the bigger weaknesses may be that the title character is a bit bland in comparison to some of the film's other more vibrant characters, but it does set up his sense of duty and morality, and shows his perseverance, so maybe we'll see some more growth from him in the next one.

By any other measure I can think of, Black Panther is at least as good as any other film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and so I give it a 7 for providing an entertaining ride and bringing it all to a climax before my hair falls out from old age.

Yes, the film is too long, as are the action sequences, but that's how movies are made nowadays so clearly my opinion is in the minority.

The dazzling look and sound of this movie, combined with a fine cast, gives Black Panther an exhilarating edge. The plot is as dumb and unbelievable as James Bond but the bold and vivid Africanisation of the Marvel trope (complete with groovy threads and strong accents) has produced a cultural artefact which may long outlive the box office returns. One gets a glimpse of a wild notion: that a well-worn genre designed for the short-term gratification of 12-year-olds has the storytelling tools to explore in its unintellectual, visceral morality the social assumptions that underpin our adult lives. I rate it second only to Joss Whedon's first Avengers film as a true cinematic adaptation of the Marvel ethos. Expand

Yes, it's well made with great visuals and good characters, but I feel that's it's still a little bit too run-of-the-mill with it's story telling. The plot and story feel incredibly cliche and predictable and I was a little bit disappointed with the lack of storytelling risks. Yes, the movie takes some risks not usually seen in Hollywood like having a superhero movie take place in Africa and exploring/incorporating traditionally african culture, but the unique aesthetics are effectively the only major risks. The villain was probably the best part. Much more flushed out and understandable than most other Marvel villains. Also, I LOVED that T'Challa wasn't your typical wise-cracking snobbish MCU hero like Iron man, Thor, StarLord, and Dr. Strange who constantly make quips and comedic one-liners. I like comedy, but at times it can get too annoying in MCU films. Made T'Challa much more tolerable and likeable.

So yes, this movie is entertaining and it does more things right than it does wrong, but it's just a bit too generic. 7/10

After watching Black Panther, I thought..hmm...not bad...I liked.
But the more I read about it, all the controversies and hate around it just makes my memories of that movie be more foggy. Both political sides took this movie and threw into one another with stupid comments and statements. As a Marvel fan, superhero movie fan, a MOVIE FAN, I liked this movie as a movie, it had some issues like the CGI in the end fight and how dark the scenes where (a little light would have made it better) and some minor problems with movie logic/writing. but the cast is amazing! The villain is great. Cinematography and music is great and yet we see people on twitter saying "if you make bad review you are racist" or "if you are white you cannot watch this movie"...
how can you be a SANE person and take this as a normal behaviour? Anyways, 7/10 is a GOOD score and that's how i rate my enjoyment of the movie. This score is not affected by the politics surrounding the movie.

I will permanently move to Metacritic now for my reviews.

While the MCU genre has become stale of late, Black Panther does provide a breath of fresh air in a tired genre and I probably would rate it higher just for that factor if Thor: Ragnarok didn't exist.

On its own merits Black Panther is an entertaining movie. It has a nice balance of action, some great performances, and some of the most amazing landscapes you will see in a movie. Unfortunately the movie is let down by a bland, formulaic story line and shaky camera action sequences that make it near impossible to tell what is going on and even harder to avoid full motion sickness.

Still a great movie and well worth seeing.

While the movie is highly enjoyable, I don't see it being way up there as the very best. There were some silly, over the top moments I thought did not fit with the flow of the movie. Battle Rhinos? ehhhhh. Clear Lexus product placement felt in your face. NOT ENOUGH KENDRICK!! People lining the walls of a cleared out waterfall hideaway?? Come on. First the positives: The storys plot is good (and for the sake of this review, I will not tell you the plot) the characters in this this movie is great, especially Chadwick Boseman. He was born to play as ´´Black Panther´´. He was charming and serious. And, surprisingly, the main villain was also great. Micheal B. Jordan did a great job portraying Erik Killmonger. He was charming and he had a motive, which made sense, which many of the MCU villians lack. The action scenes were hit and miss, mostly hit. It had great choreograhpy and good editing... mostly. Now the negatives: The movie lacked character development. For example, T´Challa became a king and wants to protect his homeland and that's it. Nothing more to his character. And then there's this character that betrayed Wakanda for no reason and there was no reason for him to betray his homeland. Remember that I said that the action scenes were hit and miss? Well, the reason for being miss is that they don't know how to edit a fight scene. Sometimes the edits are not noticeable, but sometimes they do a quick edit and it's noticeable. And now... the CGI. Some of it looks nice, but some looked too... CGI-ish. Even though this movie have some flaws, it's still one of the best MCU movie. Expand

Money talks, and right now the film's box office dominance is sending a powerful and culturally important message to Hollywood and beyond. Stories of all colors and stripes are waiting to be told, and cinema fans are pining for fresh takes and innovative ways to convey those tales.

However--one way or the other--box office results should never be mistaken for a barometer of a film's quality. 'Black Panther' brings the fictional nation of Wakanda to life while shining a bright light on a handful of social justice issues that desperately need to be addressed. I particularly like their bad-ass female version of the Praetorian guard. But in end, those highlights aren't enough to overcome the handful of illogical moments scattered throughout the plot, the hewing of action scenes towards a more juvenile audience, and the frequently lame dialogue in which Michael B. Jordan's character is easily the worst offender.

First and foremost what i enjoyed from the movie was the characters this is one of the few movies whereby almost every character no matter main-cast or side cast was done right.I enjoyed Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther,Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia,Micheal B Jordan as Killmonger and special shoutout to Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright as they portrayed their roles very well mostly because i didn't expect them to be so good. Now since this is a Marvel movie we all know there is going to be humor and Black Panther truly did have some funny moments that were well executed and rather unexpected with made the movie more of a fun time to watch,BUT AGAIN since this is a Marvel movie there was some campy and unneeded humor which toke away some of the seriousness of the movie sometimes and just uneven, and it can be disappointing that Marvel still don't know how to balance funny moments and serious moments sometimes.

However the action was very good,Black Panther has some of the most enjoyable action sequences since Captain America: Civil War and i especially liked how some action scenes were gritty and grounded while other fight scenes had more of a comic book movie style which was very fun to see and also a bit different. Now for the story,i personally liked the story not just because it was different than any Marvel movie because of it's cast or location but because it related to the real whole in some aspects and we haven't seen that since Captain America: The Winter Soldier dealing with stuff like politics or social commentary so it was greatly appreciated and needed.

The Villain Killmoger is easily in the Top 5 if not Top 3 of best Marvel villains or best villains in recent superhero movies, because who understood his motives for being the way he is and why he is doing the things he did.Micheal B Jordan was good in the role had felt like a genuine threat to Black Panther and Wakanda and his motives again weren't generic or cliche and his story is clear and fully explained in the movie.

As for the bad things in the movie well,i didn't find anything that was a huge problem with the movie however this was not a perfect film.I already stated that some of the humor was forced and it doesn't seem like Marvel is learning from this also some character motivations for me shifted too quickly or easily for my liking, what i mean is during the course of the movie some events may lead a character to change during the course of the movie which seems weirdly easy and almost rushed for the sake of it this goes for Black Panther himself and Daniel Kaluuya's character but luckily it was too bad that it took your focus off the movie and another thing is certain things are not explained in the movie like the spiritual aspect is not explained and certain plot points come out of nowhere and the movie just expects you to be okay with this which is just super lazy.

Also these maybe nitpicks but some of the special effects look weird and some of the African accents are exaggerated (don't know maybe because i'm African and i notice this stuff). Now as i said the movie is pure Marvel 101 but it is different in how it executes things like the villain and how the hero grows from his challenges and learns from his mistakes which is good story-telling and the world of Wakanda was well detailed and again the African culture aspect of the film as super on point and the world building was well done and sets up the future of Black Panther without being forced.

Some may say this is a typical Marvel movie and some of that is true but with over 10 films from Marvel it is nice too see that there can be new concepts and ideas to explore while maintaining the humor, action and well done story-telling that most Marvel movie have and can't wait for the future.

Jordan) who he will come up against as the movie progresses.Noteworthy are Production Designer Hannah Beachler’s lavish Wakanda set and Rachel Morrison’s sweeping cinematography of the fictional country’s landscape.Moreso Ruth E. Carter’s richly colourful costume design for the movie’s characters including T’Challa’s nicely embroidered Kaftan from northern Nigeria with cuffs made from Ghana’s Kente cloth and Ramonda (Angela Bassett), T’Challa’s Mother’s South African-themed outfits. The coronation ceremonies were unnecessary and off-putting.The African accents used in the movie are of two types; the very poor, used by Boseman, in portraying T’Challa, and Forest Whittaker, Sterling K. Brown and Daniel Kaluuya in their respective portrayals of the characters Zuri, N’Jobu and W’Kabi. Then there are the better sounding and convincing accents of Letitia Wright as Shuri, T’Challa’s tech geek sister, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, as well as John Kani and his son, Atandwa who play the older and younger T’Chaka, respectively. The standout performances are from Wright in her role as the excellent comedic foil to T’Challa and Gurira’s portrayal of the steely tough Okoye who commands the Palace Guard. All said, Black Panther is a job well done by Director Ryan Coogler, and a bold statement on black identity, history and ingenuity for which Marvel must be commended. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black panther is one of those movies that you are confused by the whole movie but by the end of it its much better. The plot was a bit dizzy, and mostly in one place, which is a main problem. For a movie to be entertaining at most, it must be in multiple settings across the globe or in a galaxy far, far away. However, the time the setting is changed, it is one of the best thrills in the movie. Another slight problem with the movie was the cliche. It seemed do ordinary that T'Challa lost, looked at inspiration, and got the throne back (by force, or course). You want to know what was one good thing about the movie? The woman. And no, im not saying that because i'm looking at them with lust (god no). It because they are so engaging in their roles, just that can make the movie worthwhile. Of course, there more good things about it. Another positive from the movie was the action. Despite the few action in the middle of the movie (plot development), Black Panther has thrilling action sequences, and not too plain, but not too chaotic and the same time. The comedy was light, the exact opposite of plain (to be honest, I let my guard down with the WHAT ARE THOOOOSE meme), and it works perfectly. Last but not least, Micheal B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman nails their place perfectly. The villain is terrorizing, and it doesn't really have issues. Chadwick Boseman (Chad for short) nails his throne of the king, like he is one in real life. Last, but not least, the CGI. This one is kind of mixed. In the beginning and middle, the CGI is not too sen, and the whole movie looks realistic and dazzling. However, towards the end of the movie, it goes into full OVERDOSE. In the end, Disney manages to make a full movie (great by the way) with a single cliche, and succeeded terrifically. 7.0- Not Bad Expand

The "What are those" joke sucks ass, the acting is acceptable, the action is acceptable but somewhat bland at points, Kilgrave is definitely better than most Marvel villains in movies (except for Vulture, Loki, and **** Hydra.) This movie certainly meanders at points, especially in the beginning, but at least it sets up scenes later in the second half. Daniel Kaluyaa is fine, his character is so ignorant it hurts, but his acting's fine. None of the characters really act like they're related to each other...

So why did I give this a 7... I don't know, it just doesn't suck ass if you don't think about it too much. Although this is definitely within the bottom half in terms of quality for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's not the Incredible Hulk, it's not Thor 2, and it's certainly more memorable than Age of Ultron... personally, I do think the movie presents some interesting ideas at certain points in the plot, especially towards the end when I thought it was about to become something quite unique in the superhero genre... then rhinos show up and the same stupid **** happens yet again. (By the way, I actually give this more like a 6.5, it's just that I have to round up since it's a 6.5 and not a 6.49)

Is this movie flawed? Yes. Is this movie better than anything DC has done within the last four years? Also yes... Wonder Woman is just as overrated as this movie, I hate to break it to you, but try rewatching that action scene in the alley, and you'll realize how poorly coordinated that scene in Wonder Woman actually is (or just watch RalphtheMovieMaker's review on it, he'll sum it up in a way that my stupid mind can't explain.)

It is one of the best Marvel films and a fresh instalment into the cinematic universe. However, it still falls short in many aspects that the average blockbusters and Marvel properties always do... The writing is a bit better than usual, in that it has one character with purpose and a satisfying arc, and certain story elements carry more weight than usual. Still, the film falls into the usual trap of inconsistent characters, logic that the film explains but then contradicts all the time, and a predictable narrative with poor pacing, evolution and too much lazy exposition. The costumes and soundtrack were better than expected, but the visual effects are terrible considering the standard of recent films in the franchise. The direction overall was slightly more aware than average but felt bland at times with a lack of technique and intelligence. Most of the performances were competent and the score was surprisingly good. Overall, it is somewhat better filmmaking and writing than most Marvel films, but was elevated by the politics and social influence it had. Expand

While it can be considered that both, Marvel and Disney are already abusing a bit of it is also fair to recognize that this is necessary in order to continue adding new characters to their franchise, especially considering all the actors who will end their contract with Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel.

But talking about the film, well I can say it's quite entertaining, it's fun, at last the humor flows correctly and not as overwhelmingly as it had happened in the last MCU films, especially in Thor: Ragnarok.
The cast is great, Chadwick Boseman has taken over the character and I can see him becoming the leader the franchise would need in the future. Michael B. Jordan makes a good villain but for me is not the best that the MCU has seen as a lot of people has been saying, although he has strengths that others do not, his formula is also very practical.
Of the rest, both Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright stand out as two strong female characters, especially Letitia Wrigh as Shuri, who achieves a funny and endearing character, if they allow her character to continue to grow, she can undoubtedly adopt the mantle of the Black Panther as she did in the comic books.

In general, I enjoyed it, Marvel continues to cement its huge cinematographic universe and continues to do so in a really good way. For me it's not one of the best movies of the MCU but without doubt it's quite pleasant, amusing and gratifying.

And now we've finally reached the crucial point, c'mon Marvel, surprise the world and give us the best superhero movie with Infinity War.

This surprised me in the best sort of way as the real emotion and dilemmas the protaginist faced felt so human and like a real film, not just a blockbuster. The acting was quality mainly for Michael B Jordan for his role as Erik Killmonor but the entire cast was great. Special effects were pretty great too and once again the action scenes were pretty great. Every actor did a great job especially Michael B. Jordan who played one of the best villain in superhero movies ever; his motivations are so compelling that make you sympathy with him. The dramatic moments were touching and they are clearly inspired by The Lion King. Unfortunately, the action scenes are very very bad especially with the use of such poor CGI; the characters seemed as they were fully animated in some kind of a computer game. The major issue I have with this movie is the ending; it's so rushed and clichéd. I think the movie should have been separated into two parts because it ends weirdly, I feel that the ending came out of nowhere; it's very displaced. I hoped to see King T'Challa more stronger as he was in Civil War but they made all the women in the movie stupidly strong that their fight scenes overshadowed Black Panther's. Overall, I had so much fun watching this movie but I think it's so overrated. Expand

Does anyone remember the days when you could go see a movie and people didn't have to be political about it? I remember going to see Blade and Blade II and no one said anything racist or liberal about it whatsoever. I haven't seen this movieDoes anyone remember the days when you could go see a movie and people didn't have to be political about it? I remember going to see Blade and Blade II and no one said anything racist or liberal about it whatsoever. I haven't seen this movie yet but I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it just like all the other Marvel movies I've seen besides Ghost rider and maybe a couple others. Will I think it's the greatest movie ever made? Probably not... Then again as much as I enjoy Marvel movies I can't think of one of them I would say is the greatest of all time, among all the movies I've seen. I really personally can't stand how racist people have become on both sides of the argument, It's rather pathetic. If a reviewer doesn't like this movie they are met with the brand of being racist or they are threatened. If certain African Americans or hardcore liberals see the movie they claim it as the greatest movie ever made to further some agenda. I don't mean every black person or every liberal by the way. Why are we treating Black Panther the movie like Affirmative Action the movie? We really have to start realizing that it's a fictional movie and the whole point of watching a movie is to try and have fun. Also before anyone attacks this with your agenda supporting comments like "you don't like to see a wealthy black person in a movie"...I really loved Coming to America and it was one of my favorite comedies growing up and if it's on TV I always watch it. If you say I can't stand a black person portraying a super hero... I beg to differ because I love the Blade movies with exception of the third, but I do in fact own all three of them. Funny enough when I was around 19 I sat in a theater to watch the movie "Friday" with an packed audience of 99.9% black folks and though there was a moment of awkwardness by the time the movie was going I was bumping elbows with a complete stranger and laughing my ass off. At that moment color didn't matter and that is the way it should always be. So for people that gave this a movie a 0 or a 10 to further some agenda through a Marvel/Disney movie, YOU are what's wrong with America. You folks are the racists. Now I know there are honest people who really liked this movie and to you I have no ill will and I'm sure there are going to be some who just didn't like the movie. Shouldn't people be able to have a simple honest opinion? I think so. Also I realize there are people that give 0s and 10s like they are handing out candy on Halloween and to those people I will always view you as just trolls or people who can't have rational thoughts but to each their own. As for my score for now I'm giving it a 7 because, well I have not seen it yet but I'm sure it will be at least a good movie considering it was the same guy who did "CREED" , another movie I really enjoyed and of coarse it's a Marvel movie and they have quite a good track record. I wouldn't doubt after seeing it I'll probably think it's a 8 or 9. Until then I ask that people try to understand how foolish you're acting and you may think you're making progress when you are actually further dividing everyone. Put your agendas aside and just go see a movie and enjoy it for what it's worth. If you want to get mad about something, get mad at how much you just payed for a ticket or a large soda. That my friends is ridiculous. I can't wait to see how many racists and trolls show how little they have to do in life and down vote my thoughts. LOL!!! Expand

Getting an honest review was practically impossible because they couldn’t get past the identity of the movie and just tell me if it’s a good story. So here’s my honest review!

Black Panther is very good movie, if you like Marvel movies it’s definitely worth it and I’d even say it’s one of the better ones. Visuals are stunning, fights are great (overused shaking camera though), and my favorite is the aesthetics of the tribal/super advanced Wakanda. It has that same cool flavor Asgard had in Thor. Just really neat to see the culture of Wakanda. Very imaginative. The main character is ok, but it works out as his supporting cast compliments him rather well. He’d be too stoic and boring without them. The movie has 2 villain. Andy Serkis is absolutely fantastic as ‘Claw’ and I loved every minute of him. Warmonger is the primary villain, and though threatening, is rather typical as a hate filled villain who wishes evil on the world cause he’s bad. I wish the movie had ‘Claw’ as the primary villain for a number of reasons I’ll get to in the story.
The story is where it gets dicey. -minor spoilers-
Overall it’s about the main character, T’Challa, ascending to the throne, as we see how the Wakandan culture works, before hunting ‘Claw’ who not only discovered Wakanda, and is thus a threat, but also murdered Wakandans to steal Vibranium. The tribes of Wakanda are seeing how their new king will deal with what even the last king couldn’t deal with. However an African-American (and yes, that’s actually important) comes to use Wakanda’s technology to kill all non-blacks. Now that last part seems to come out of west field... and you’d be right. Everything with Killmonger is odd in the story sense.
-end minor spoilers-

So it appears that Warmonger’s primary purpose is to have a central message regarding race. The message is overall good, ‘Let go of the sins of the past, the sins of your race and move forward’ however I’m more interested in good stories, and Wakanda has nothing to do with this message and the story stumbles because of it. That’s an African-American message, but it takes place in Africa, in a fictional place that has never been enslaved, had slaves, or even cared about slavery until recently, and that’s regarding Africans enslaving Africans. They only care about Wakanda. You can put Warmonger in any movie and have the exact same message. He doesn’t bounce off the other characters very well or the plot since he has no one to relate to. He’s just a racist that came to do genocidal racist things. Warmonger would have to be in a movie with another African-American who he could relate and dig deeper into that message. The movie would have greatly benefited if he stuck to his other revenge motivation.

Only other gripe I can make is there’s a really, really bad CGI rhino. You can’t miss it.

Good Movie, I wish it didn't feel the need to put a race message that is incompatible to the rest of the story and confuses the motivations of a possibly good antagonist. Could have just been an awesome super hero story.

I kept wondering how the story about wakanda's super secret city & strength be revealed to the audience. And I couldn't have expected any better, simpler, crispier father-son narrative on why wakanda is the way it is!
Black Panther covers most of Marvel's ingredients, but it feels to have gravely lacked in finding the proportions. There were hardly a couple of scenes that was really funny. Neither the story nor the plot felt fulfilling. Story was weak, didn't cover much but just revolved around the technical advances of Wakanda's super secret city and its rituals. Plot could have been better, didn't have much coverage either. Killmonger was shown the main villain, but for some reason Klaw seemed a better and audience loving villain who got killed in a jiffy. Killmonger needed a stronger background and story showing him more competitive to the black panther, but it was just his muscles, attitude and an american accent that took more coverage (oh i missed "Nay". You'll know what i mean). Black Panther is not as much a negative movie as i might have made it sound, but the expectations for various reason were so high, that the movie just failed to meet it. Although it is a definite 1 time watcher, but one lacks the content of having watched a full-package Marvel movie simply because there just wasn't enough of everything.

Black Panther a one time watcher if you are a Marvel's fan. Else the film will interest you only in parts.

Jordan great actor well cast as Killmonger but it didn't feel right as to this point Micheal B. Jordan had portrayed the protagonist. His character was well written and I felt as he should not have been killed off he should have been kept around for the sequel. A positive is its limited amount of action scenes the movie is mostly about Waknada and its politicians and it does knot have a lot of action scenes but when thy come there amazing this movie has great effects, great directing, great cinematography, I definitely recommend this movie but dont let the hype get to you Expand

I honestly think it's one of the better Marvel films and is, for the most part, visually astounding. The writing is pretty standard for a Marvel film, it's formulaic but it gets the job done well enough to entertain the intended audience. This film wasn't so much created to be a statement or offer a different outlook on life or the world around us. This film isn't Logan, which took the concepts of death and depression and used them in various aspects of the narrative. Nor is it as fun and offensive as Deadpool. It's meant to make money while entertaining a broad audience, which it does. Some of the visuals in this film were taken straight out of the comics and look almost watercolor at times, which I thought was really interesting. There are many other aspects of the visuals that I thought were honestly astounding while there were a few (more specifically the rhinos) that looked like they were right out of an old PS3 video game.

The soundtrack is comprised of a mixture of rap, hip-hop, and traditional African music. I honestly really liked this soundtrack and it was honestly great to see something original rather than having them use licensed music.

Will I be buying this for myself when it comes out? Probably not, but I wouldn't be disappointed if I received it as a gift or a birthday present.

Something many people will claim the anti-hero to be right about, which is the most compelling part of the story. However, the portrayal of this theme is weak, and lacks complexity. The overuse of CGI, and the overall lack of real story makes this movie fall short of great. Expand

Black Panther is most definitely an above-average superhero film, but does it deserve the "universal acclaim" that it has received from critics? In my humble opinion, no.

The strongest point of the film is in its story. Although all the twists and turns it takes are thoroughly predictable, the political tensions and personal vendettas make for more than enough drama and action to keep viewers engaged for the over two-hour runtime.

The performances are all great, as the cast consists of actors who have proven themselves to be beyond capable time and time again. They are equally matched by a solid script that makes for a fast-paced, fun film. That being said, while the acting and dialogue are good, nothing really stands out to make it memorable. In the sense of these things, it not much different than whatever else Marvel has to offer.

The weakest part of the film is in the visuals. Once again, while perfectly fine and suitable, there is nothing that has not been seen before. We have seen the CGI cities, the advanced aircraft, the alien weaponry, etc. many times before. And in addition to this, the fight sequences are disappointingly dull. There are a couple of cool surprises here and there, but the climax feels like it just sort of comes and goes in an utterly predictable fashion.

Black Panther is certainly enjoyable and certainly worth a viewing, but it's not a film that I was incredibly excited to discuss after seeing it and it hasn't really stuck with me.

I think the movie should have been separated into two parts because it ends weirdly, I feel that the ending came out of nowhere; it's very misplaced. I hoped to see King T'Challa more stronger as he was in Civil War but they made all the women in the movie stupidly strong that their fight scenes overshadowed Black Panther's. Overall, I had so much fun watching this movie but I think it's so overrated.

The biggest disappointment I have with this movie is that it doesn’t really differentiate itself from any other Marvel movie. I wouldn’t mind so much, but this movie is directed by RYAN COOGLER, aka the man who directed Fruitville Station and Creed. I almost never felt his distinctive vision for direction in this movie. All the times I did centered around Killmonger, the villian. One this movie DOES do differently from other MCU films is that the villain is the best part of the movie, which is usually the complete opposite in almost every other MCU film. Michael B. Jordan is both charismatic and heartbreaking in the role, and he was far and away the single best aspect of the movie. Every thing else ranged from good (the story and performances) to bad (the **** CGI). Like most MCU movies, it’s pretty average. I would give it a pass if it wasn’t for the fact that Ryan Coogler was directing, but because he was, I left the theatre very disappointed. Expand

Wakanda Forever!

Marvel’s Black Panther will forever hold a place in Academy Awards history as the very first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. It is also only the second comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture—the first was Skippy in 1931 (which was my favorite of the Best Picture nominees for that year). Black Panther is also notable for being a major studio movie that features a predominantly black cast and crew. It was the highest grossing film of 2018, received critical acclaim, and now has been nominated for 7 Academy Awards. Despite all of that, Black Panther is most notable of all for standing out amongst the din and spectacle other superhero movies and giving us memorable characters and a new and exciting country: Wakanda.

The fictional African nation of Wakanda is a feast for the eyes. The costumes for its people blend traditional African motifs with a sleek futuristic sensibility with creative and impressive results; it’s no surprise costume designer Ruth E. Carter has received an Oscar nomination for her work. Production designers Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart have received much deserved Oscar nominations for creating the look of Wakanda. The visuals of both interiors and exteriors are exciting and dazzling. The design for the snowy mountain homeland of Wakanda’s reclusive Jabari tribe alone deserves an Academy Award. Most of all the production design creates a high-tech futuristic place that feels like it could be a part of the real world.

Of course, Black Panther is woven into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The African superhero first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, where the king of Wakanda was killed by terrorists making his son, Prince T’Challa, unexpectedly king. T’Challa also became the Black Panther, protector of Wakanda, aided by a super suit and magical potion that gives him super strength. The brilliance of the screenplay by director Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole is it does not require you to have seen other Marvel superhero movies to enjoy or understand the characters or plot. This might be the most accessible film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe aside from the first Iron Man back in 2008.

Chadwick Boseman plays T’Challa/Black Panther and he does a good job of playing not just a believable superhero but also a believable leader of a country. Though T’Challa is the main character, the stand out characters and performances are in the supporting cast. Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger is easily the most memorable and interesting villain of any Marvel movie. Killmonger is a living breathing person (not just a big CGI bully like Thanos) with understandable though not admirable motivations. T’Challa’s allies are the mostly female and all badass warriors and scientists of Wakanda. Letitia Wright plays Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister. She is the Q to his James Bond, inventing cutting-edge, high-tech gadgets and since they’re siblings the characters have a lively back and forth banter. Lupita Nyong’o is T’Challa’s ex-girlfriend and Wakanda’s chief spy, Nakia. Danai Gurirais Okoye, Wakanda’s tough and unflappable general. Martin Freemanis good comic relief as a fish-out-water CIA agent awestruck by Wakanda.

I think part of the reason for Black Panther’s success with audiences and critics and the reason it doesn’t feel like just another superhero movie is its story follows the template of a James Bond movie rather than a superhero movie. There is even a memorable action scene set in a posh casino followed by a car chase. The rest of the action sequences are not as jarring or bombastic as those from The Avengersmovies. You can follow what is happening and where and who it is happening to; you can actually be engaged in the action. Moreover, there’s reason for the action. Killmonger’s sincere but villainous motivations and T’Challa’s dilemma in being both a protector and a leader add substance to superhero spectacle

Just that it wasn't worth all the hype. The only thing it has to be a unique MCU film would be that it had was the majority of people from black community as its cast members. I am not criticizing that, but that's NOT a legit reason to hype it up so much. .
.
Good : It was whatever the first Thor movie couldn't be. In other words, it was "Thor" (2011) on Wakanda and better. It has some fantasy elements regarding the "Black Panther formula" and at the same time, it is quite of a sci fi too, and on the sideline it's also a crime film. These themes hold together very cohesively and make the movie a solid piece of art, on the whole. For the first time in an MCU movie, a villain was good. Killmonger is probably my second favorite MCU villain till date, the first one being Thanos. That character was well written to say the least. We knew where he was coming from, his motives, what he is up to and why. He is the best part of this movie. Many of the heist and crime film vibes it had was very interesting in the scenario they set up for this movie. The character interactions and the dynamic between various characters were good. Some funny scenes and dialogues land properly (while some don't, it's an MCU movie, after all). While watching this film, you won't want to skip any part of it, even though, in the end, you might be saying, "is that it?! Dafuq?!!" But most importantly, it gives you a really good introduction to Black Panther. We can get behind this hero for good. The character arc they give to him is excellent. .
.
Mixed : A lot of it feels like parts of Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. The "sci fi" part feels quite like the stuff going on between Batman and Fox. The establishment of the character of Killmonger was (in a subtext) similar to how we got introduced to The Joker in "The Dark Knight" or to Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises". Also, some scenes are quite similar to interrogation scenes of "The Dark Knight". I am not saying that it was a ripoff of Nolan's films. It might be the same in the source material they adapted, I don't know. But noticing those themes being dealt in a similar way, makes it kind of a mixed bag. The movie, also, apparently "kills" off a character, which doesn't feel so compelling because they were to be back in future films (which had already been announced or were seen in the trailer of Infinity War). Not saying that the way they killed off the character was bad. If we didn't know about him being back in Infinity War, it would've made a solid impact. But, we know about him being back. So, it wasn't much interesting. .
.
Bad : Many fights and scenes in the film are super clichéd. Not only that you can predict what will happen, you can even predict what kind of a dialogue will close that scene, and what will be the immediate consequence for the character who gave that piece of dialogue. The third act of the movie was just plain generic third act of a superhero movie with a lot of clichés and dumbed down "Captain America: Civil War" conditions with some of kind of "Lord of the Rings" vibe. .
.
Conclusion : "Black Panther", for me, was some kind of a mixed bag. It was surely overhyped, but wasn't so bad of an overhyped movie. On the whole, a solid entertainer. Not something like Infinity War or Iron Man or Avengers or Civil War that will be talked for a long time. .

This is one of the rare MCU movies where the villain is more charismatic than the main character.

T'Challa in this movie is surprisingly bland and the character development that it went through in Civil War seems to not be there anymore.

Weak CGI effects and the glorification of what is essentially an absolutist monarchy based on a quasi-medieval society with Vibranium-based tech doesn't portray Wakanda as a "good country". The main story of the movie acknowledges this with a villain more empathetic to the viewer than the nobles of Wakanda.

Cunning edge, however some parts of the movie were not as good, and some of the actors which, did not give us the best end of it all.

I thought it was a joke! This is a good movie, I won't deny that, it actually has some social commentary about racism that superhero movies don't really have too often, it's competetively shot, it has some cool action scenes, solid acting for almost all the cast, but almost every other aspect was just bland and pretty standard, like the writing, the cinematography and the score (Many people seem to love the score but I thought it wasn't anything special even if it's good).
It has that basic superhero movie formula, the movie felt pretty predictable at times and the message about racism, while it's good to see a superhero movie talk about this topics, it's really standard and generic, nothing that changed my mind or anything.
And the CGI, oh my god it's maybe the worst CGI that a MCU movie has ever had, there was CGI that felt straight out of a PS2 game, it's shocking.

I mean this is a pretty competent movie, a pretty good one, but why is this nominated? Why was this nominated for best picture over other way better movies like Eight Grade or First Man, or even a superhero movie like Spider-Verse, in that case, Spider-Verse could've been nominated for that award! But nope, let's give it (the nomination) to Black Panther.
When I saw it I liked it but I never thought it was Oscar-worthy and I was shocked when I saw the reviews.

CG scenes when our hero is in his signature suit are a bit sloppy, but the live fights, with no superpowers, are much more engaging. The effects fall incredibly flat and the story isn't the most original, but it makes up for it in it's performances and Marvel fun.

I'll be honest. I am not the target audience of this movie, although I am a HUGE fan of comic book movies. As much as I liked it, there is a group of people who identify with it on a much deeper level than I do. Because of that, I'm sureI'll be honest. I am not the target audience of this movie, although I am a HUGE fan of comic book movies. As much as I liked it, there is a group of people who identify with it on a much deeper level than I do. Because of that, I'm sure there are things that I miss or do not understand the cultural significance of. However, as a purely comic book entry of the MCU, I thoroughly enjoy the character of Black Panther and the supporting cast. It is great to see Andy Serkis as something other than a CGI character. I have much respect for Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright, especially. Michael B Jordan makes a great sympathetic "villain" who begins the movie much more sympathetic than he ends it. What I mean is that he starts as someone whose intentions are understandable but ends as nothing more than another movie tyrant. Still, his performance is fantastic!
So, you may wonder, "Why just a 7 if you like it so much?" My biggest frustration is one major scene and one major addition in that one major scene: the rhinos. The computer animation on them is so frustrating compared to other digitally inserted characters in other films that I cringe every time I watch it. I don't know why it grinds me so much, but there is something about them that makes me want to stop watching right then and there! I know it seems petty, but those rough-looking cartoon beasts really stand out against all the amazing character development and awesome fight choreography that takes place before and after it.
Still, I would pick an MCU movie or many other movies most days of the week!

Funnily enough, everyone says this is the first black marvel superhero movie, which my cousin of all people pointed down. Saying the first one was actually Blade, and I found that very interesting. I wonder if the reason not more people pointed that out like he did is because Blade may have failed to resonate with a wider audience like Black Panther did, and so people assume Black Panther has been the first.

Be that as it may, I'll keep this brief. The story, characters, art direction and soundtrack are pretty good! I thought the cheesy jokes may have done the movie a disservice and the movie at large failed to engage me all that much tbh. I like it for what it is regardless.

An extremely mediocre Marvel movie about a ridiculous fantasy land in the heart of Africa that despite its vast technological superiority defends its borders with spears and chooses its monarch in a tribal fight to the death
