This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good movie. All of the positive things you have heard over and over again are true. Great world building explaining Wakanda and their history. Love the different fictional African tribes with their different religions, styles and technologies. This film stands well on its own among the Marvel movies in that a lot of the MCU backstory is not needed going into this movie and it stands well on its own. Also, as with most MCU movies of the last couple years, the universe is a lot different coming out of the movie than it was before coming in. The scores and soundtracks are some of the best I've heard in a movie in years. I would actually buy this soundtrack which I haven't done in quite awhile. My only 2 complaints are the shaky-cam fighting style used to hide the mediocre fight choreography and the killing off Klaw. I thought he was a fun chaotic villain that was different from most MCU bad guys and it would have been great to see him return to hassle other heroes in his unique way. It seems like Marvel sets up too many villains just to kill them off in their second outing. Aside from my couple issues, the movie is well deserved of its praise. Expand

The main plot was pretty run of the mill, thought Michael B was definitely an above average Marvel villain. Mostly I really enjoyed the characters and the world-building of the different tribes. Black panther himself wasn't really that interesting of a character, but the supporting cast, especially the sister and general were very well written and acted. Nothing crazily creative or surprising narratively, but what it did, it did well. Expand

The movie was interesting, but, even though it started out great in both story and action, in the middle of it was lacking and at some parts actually boring, which lower my rating for it, could've been great, but now it was just good.

Pantera negra é um dos melhores filmes introduzidos em 2018 e que dá um incrível boost no que está para vir nos filmes da Marvel. Ainda vou ver o filme de novo para comentar melhor mas está sensacional e o elenco é top.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, at this point, has been receiving great movies to watch throughout the past decade (that means Black Panther too) and it would be much of a shame if that streak ended at any time. I sure wish they don't ruin this streak though since the Marvel Cinematic Universe holds many surprises that many people would not expect to see for a film that features the Marvel characters they know and love. I'm only going to say this once and just once. Please go see Black Panther if you haven't yet. Definitely worth your money. Expand

I'mIt sucks to have to start off a review like this but I couldn't help but notice the weight of negative reviews left for this movie and the nature of the comments. The stench of racism and agenda pushing is blatant and ain't fooling ####. I'm not one to think we live in a world full of racist, however its sad the amount of people still out there with so much hate that they feel the need to purposefully go online to review a movie just because of the precedents it sets. All for a movie that although has general positive message most would agree with, really doesn't get too political and is actually pretty safe.

With that out of the way, now to the movie itself. Was this the best marvel movie now to date? Probably not. Was it still a fun and refreshing movie to catch? Without a doubt. There wasn't anything groundbreaking with the storyline, however everything you would want at least in an action movie checked all the boxes. Character motivation was believable, there weren't any annoying holes in the storyline, and the villain was reputable. The action scenes weren't on Civil War level, but not many movies are, and they were definitely not void of originality and excitement.

Following Chadwick Boseman’s character T’Challa as he returns from the location of Civil War, we are introduced to the bustling world of Wakanda, which is undoubtably the most colorful place in the entire MCU. The immersion is incredible - a grand introduction via a flyover of the entire city, accompanied by a terrific score from Ludwig Goransson (those drums are amazing). The way Coogler goes about exploring the culture of this world is invigorating, and he devotes the entire first half to this. When it comes to the action, it is largely hit or miss. It is quite noticeable, at specific points, when a character changes from a stuntman to a CGI model, which can get quite distracting. The majority of the fights don’t provide enough of the satisfying elements of other Marvel outings, and, honestly, the direction of the action could be better (Nothing against Coogler). Also, the seemingly poignant messages expressed throughout the film’s runtime sometimes come across as hamfisted, which was kind of a set back. All in all though, Black Panther makes up for its somewhat disappointing action sequences with a charming story, incredible characters, the best Marvel score to date, and terrific performances. And, most importantly, it’s a lot of fun. Expand

As good points: The comedy is present in the film, but it's not the principal aspect like it was in Thor: Ragnarok. Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), the villain has a lot of presence and his motivations are very realistic. Also, Ulisses Klaw (Andy Serkis), Shuri (Letitia Wright) the Agent Ross (Martin Freeman) and General Okoye (Danai Gurira) have their own special moments. Despite some CGI issues that I saw, the special effects for Wakanda or the Shuri's toys are really immersive and enjoyable. The best point of the film, as a lover of Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore...is the soundtrak which sounded really good.
Negative points: Well, I'll start with T'chala (Chadwick Boseman). He was great as Black Panther, but sometimes I had the sensation that he was overacting.
Aswell, as I said before, some CGI moments were to low for what we are used to in the MCU. And for the last, sometimes the rythm of the film is a bit slow, not enought to get bored, but enought to realize it.

Did anyone else get lion king flash backs when they go into the spirit world? Just me?

In all seriousness though this is a win for proving that minority casts with strong female leads can still make money and good films. Can we give Danai, Lupita and Letitia a spin off? Worst thing about the film, CG is a little off at times, not terrible but takes you out of the action at times.

Ok,so before we start,I just want to say that, since i'm a good person at heart,i'm going to say what went wrong with this movie too, since this movie is not flawless, that being said...Enjoy!
With all the new releases from MARVEL Studios (Spider-Man Homecoming or Thor Ragnarok),it might be a clichè to say that Black Panther is a great movie, but I would mostly define it as 'the most intelligent movie in the MCU.
Don't get me wrong,I loved their previous efforts, especially the recent Spider-Man Homecoming, but after a 'BOOM!' and a 'KA-POW!',Ryan Coogler (Creed and Fruitvale Station) decides to stop and do something that I think 'X-Men (2000)' and the whole DCEU should've done better: Giving us a 'realistic' look at superheroes, how superheroes can sometimes be threatened by the Government. All of that while giving us a fascinating look at Wakanda,T'Challa's hometown,a city so technological Apple would really blush.
Accompained by an excellent Production Design and some impressive cinematography by the Oscar-Nominated Rachel Morrison,as well as the score by Creed's Ludwig Gorasson and the rather bombastic soundtrack by Kendrick Lamar, this movie tries its best to shine in detail,a thing that even Jordan Peele tried to do with Get Out (2017). And holy smokes,it does...
Of course Boseman gives a great performance as T'Challa,of course Serkis and Freeman are great in this, but I really have to praise Michael B. Jordan (Creed and Fantastic Four 2015) for giving us the best MCU Villain since Loki. With Erik Killmonger,we understand where he's coming from,we understand his motivation, and while he makes stuff go 'BADA-BOOM!' and 'BADA-BING!',you can sometimes side with him because,as said, his motivation was interesting, and I won't spoil it because it needs to be experienced by your own eyes.
Also I have to mention the women in this movie, because, just like the gals in Wonder Woman, they are a treasure in this movie, from Letitia Wright (who plays Shuri,T'Challa's hi-tech sister) to Lupita Nyong'o (T'Challa's ex-girlfiend) and Danai Guirira. They were as charismatic as ever and they had their time to shine in this movie.
Now,as I said in the beginning,i'm going to mention the flaws, because this movie isn't flawless etc...
During the final fight between Black Panther and Killmonger, the CG in the suits was easily noticeable,as if it was a videogame (unlike the entirety of Justice League, where everything was a cartoon),and it was disappointing to see Angela Bassett (Ramonda,T'Challa's mom) being not used as much as the rest of the cast.
Also, from an impressive opening sequence, you're in for a game of 'Where's Waldo?',since Killmonger rarely appears during the whole 1st act of the movie.
But aside from that,Black Panther was a great time at the movies. With an excellent Production Design,Ryan Coogler's impressive way of directing and, obviously,Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa,it was great to see that I can even have a real blast at a movie that isn't Spider-Man 2 (2004).

Mmm... not really, because to be honest, the movie functions just as most Marvel movies do, Great action, good acting, great special effects, and lots of action and excitement. That being said, Black Panther is a great movie, with two of the best villains of Marvel so far, a fun and exciting story, and good music and message. Now as a project and event in movie history, there's where Black Panther really shines, because it showcases finally that all that of "I can't say my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such. I’m just not going to get it financed." is just not true. Hopefully this shines a way forward for more great movies of all types, no matter where they come from or who they are. Expand

It feels weird when battles go on and there's no blood on sight. The thing that makes this movie great it's the story, it came in a great time and the moment it had to. When you leave the theaters you feel for Killmonger, you get him the most, and other political messages hidden here and there between the dialogue are great too. ThisTo be honest, this movie is very overrated by the critics. Now, that's not a great way to start a review, but the critics have absolutely adored this movie and hailed it as the greatest superhero movie of all time. It certainly is not. This film has some very amazing messages and the best MCU villain up to date (for now), the problem is that it seems like the critics have been caught up in both of those that they overlook the film's flaws. While the rest of the movie is not your typical Marvel movie, the first-hour certainly is. Killmonger is completely underused, he shows up and then doesn't come back in the film until 20 or 30 minutes before it ends. The CGI is inexcusably bad for a movie like this, to the point where it distracts me from enjoying the finale, which is an OK finale to begin with. Still, Black Panther is a pretty great Marvel film, filled with amazing messages and characters. It's just not as great as the critics say it is. B+ Expand

A movie that isn't one-dimensional, you can understand and maybe agree with attitudes from the villains or maybe don't agree with the hero, that's rare in super heroes movies. We have a bunch of tribes, with a development in some of them, they are well introduced and explained, with many different costumes, costumes that are simply great and beautiful. The soundtrack is awesome, with some hard beat that literally puts you on the edge of your seat pumping you up in some moments, in others making you feel the atmosphere of the place better. Visually it's really impressive, in some moments you can see Lion King surroundings and combining with the song it's just phenomenal. The bigger problem here is the CGI in some moments, mostly at the action scenes, you can see 2 digital beans fighting or animals that is easily noticeable fake, and it's ugly. About the actors and actresses, they are all formidable, the job that they did is memorable, they nailed. Every character has a purpose and the story flows, no unnecessary scenes on it. Expand

The story is more about Wakanda and the royal family in general. The decisions they made and how it impacted their future and past. This is pretty much a story about the ethics of powers, personal choices and political agendas. I didn't realized how much the music was good. Of all the cultural african reference that went into the movie, the music surely stands out. The FX were good. I must say I was frustrated in the cinema theatres about the lack of contrast and clarity for the night scenes. However on my TV the Black Panther night scenes are much more better. There was fun jokes all along the movie and I like the humour in general. It was the kind you do when you are between friends and family. I though it was the most personal story to date, bringing very close to Iron Man 1. Apart from the strange Rhynos, I like a lot of this movie. I give the movie a 78%. And just like Spiderman, it put the responsibility of superheroes powers as something to not take lightly. And when you think about it, he is the only superhero with a country to manage. I think Marvel did exploit that fact very well. Expand

They promised to show us something that (at least) felt new and it did that. I wouldn't say it's perfect, there were some scenes that popped out to me as feeling a bit goofy or sloppy, but maybe on repeat viewings I'd have a different opinion. Overall very impressive. Compared to other MCU movies for me personally it's behind The Avengers and Winter Soldier, but ahead of most everything else.

I literally felt a range of emotions with this movie. I liked that it paused to talk tech when needed, its really interesting stuff. I liked that the movie had actual stakes and made me worried for certain characters. It did a very good job.

One other point: Anyone giving this a negative review either has an agenda of their own or is being confronted by something that makes them feel uncomfortable. There's no rational way this movie deserves a negative review, given everything it does really well. It might be fair to be mixed about it, and it might not be a 10 either. 7 or 8 is realistically fair, I'm giving it an 8 because it did so many things right, way more than it did wrong.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty good movie. It seems like they copy 85% off of 'Avatar'. Some scenes are funny. Make it seems like African Americans are bad. I sat in the movie theater from 9:45 to 12:30, because of a hour long commercial. I don't appreciate that. So anyway, what is the point of the King taking the vibranium from his brother and then killed him if there are a lot of vibranium in the King's country. Why bother the white Detective if he wasn't really interesting in capturing the bad guys? Expand

Visually pleasing really well directed and shot action scenes, and amazing futuristic vibe to it. The actors did a decent job on their roles. Also the plot was pretty local and did not met the standards of today's marvel universe's huge roles but it did fill in one chapter which was needed for the future movie. The music in action scenes and tension ones was really great, also the plot had a taste of traditional African traditions which was breath of fresh air in the MCU. The humor was above average and it got a few really hilarious moments as well, due to it's humor. But the real show steal-er was the plot's simplicity yet interesting. Which made for immersion and entertainment at the highest value. It's a really fun movie to watch and it does not fault in the pacing of the plot and unfolding the story. I really liked historical references and the details about African culture. The film is a visual feast at its best. I simply can't wait to watch and learn about Wakanda.

Last super hero films bored me a lot but thanks to Black Panther, Marvel excites me again.

What this film shares in common with those two is a strong directorial voice: it's not a coincidence that these are the three least 'MCU formula' films in the canon. 'CA:TWS' was a straight-up spy thriller with visceral, grounded action sequences that also offered a commentary on state surveillance, while 'T:R' was a more purely escapist fantasy adventure-comedy. Both were great. 'Black Panther' also takes the MCU in a new direction: it's an afro-futurist science fantasy, a shakespearian tale of dynasty and betrayal, and an unabashedly political statement. Let's be clear: this is a superhero film produced under a Disney-owned banner, but it also has things to say about our world aside from "bad guys ought to be punched". If you're the kind of person who thinks that, say, singers should "shut up and sing" when their songs don't fully agree with your worldview then you might be annoyed by this movie.

The dynamic in Black Panther is distinctly different from other Marvel films. Unlike most of the other rebellious super-vigilantes, BP is a hero, but he's also the king. His nation, Wakanda, is dizzyingly advanced but also overwhelmingly traditionalist. And it is also an *African* nation, and that is a major point of discussion within the film. Given the history of colonialism and slavery, what would a hyper-advanced African nation owe to people outside of its borders? This issue, and BP's journey to answering it, provides the central tension of the film. Frankly it's (unfortunately) bold for a big-budget Hollywood film to engage with 'sensitive' issues like the historical/current oppression of black folks. But for the most part this is handled really well. Some reviewers have accused Disney/Marvel of 'shoehorning' a political agenda into this film, and I couldn't disagree with them more. The story of Black Panther simply *cannot* be un-political. The Thor movies can afford to be apolitical because Thor himself wouldn't be touched directly by anti-black racism. Black Panther and his kingdom wouldn't have that luxury. It's useful to have a movie address that.

PRO: This film does a fantastic job of establishing Wakanda and its people. The cast is honestly incredible - BP has the current best dramatic actor on TV in a minor supporting role, for cripe's sake. Boseman is solid as T'Challa, but Letitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as M'baku, and especially Danai Gurira as Okoye are all scene-stealers. Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger ultimately stands out the most for me. He's menacing and charismatic. Also Andy Serkis seems like he's having a legit great time. The costumes are fantastic. The humour isn't overdone and works really well in places. The prominence of the female characters is a big plus - after so many movies starring white dudes named Chris (8 of them, if you don't count the Avengers films!!) it was refreshing to see an MCU film that foregrounded both black characters and women. The Wakandan tech shown in the film was inventive and interesting. The hand-to-hand fight scenes were well-done, as was a particular big battle scene. But ultimately the journey that T'Challa makes toward defining his rule, and his conflict with the main antagonist (who was ruthless but also at times sympathetic) really provided the meat for this film.

CON: There were times when the CGI looked a bit on the rubbery side - especially when figures (mostly T'Challa himself) were flying through the air. And it would have been nice to have the film acknowledge the romantic relationship between Ayo and Okoye that has been established in the comics (but this won't be an issue for the average MCU fan, obvs).

Black Panther is a great superhero film. I'd really suggest taking with a grain of salt any of the low-score reviews that claim that it is 'just another cookie-cutter Marvel film' or call it 'formulaic' (they haven't seen the film at all) or make any reference to reviews being bought by Disney (they are almost certainly DCEU fans with an axe to grind). And don't be put off by complaints about "identity politics". I'm a white dude and I loved the film. We've had literally *every single other* MCU film led by white guys - it's refreshing to mix up the formula for once and get some different perspectives. Check it out, for sure.

I liked it quite a bit. And I think a lot of Republicans or Conservatives actually don't realize that Black Panther is actually quite a good role model for Conservatives, let me explain why.

Where the film is strongest is in these areas.

-Visuals
-Story
-Revelations
-Role Models (This section is for Republicans and Conservatives, Especially)

Where the film is weakest in areas.

-History
-Racial Issues
-Side Characters (Particularly Villain Elements) -STRENGTHS

-Visuals: Visually I enjoyed all the purple and wild colors all over. The paint on the masks, the paint on the walls, the faces, the Art. This was just so well done that it was very atmospheric. It literally felt like we were in East Africa or Wakanda. The giant lips, the Rhinos, the people using the shields as cloaks. It was simple yet elegant. The only visual Marvel movie that would be better is Guardians of the Galaxy. And who could forget the dirt ancestor ceremony! That was just sheer coolness.

Simply put. Credit goes where credit is due. The artists did one hell of a job. The body markings were just cool.

-Story: Although I kind of got a vibe of Scar vs Muffasa from the Lion King. I actually found the motivations of the characters to be quiet tragic and well motivated. I'd be pissed to if someone killed my father and just left him there, only to find out that it was my uncle. Although I would be pressed to think that my fate would be fighting my fathers battles. Although I thought the tension of being a monarch was rather missing, but that went away when the villain showed up.

-Revelations: One thing I enjoyed about this movie was not revealing deaths or certain key plot points till later in the film. I think what a lot of films fail to execute on is actually showing how certain past events unfolded as certain present events unfolded. I like that quiet a bit.

-Role Models: This was actually a positive role model for black people. Why? The main character is show to care for his people more than himself. Put's his nation, family and traditions, first. While the villain is show to be aggressive, controlling, unhinged in his emotions, vengeful, and a warmonger. Black Panther represents what people who are conservative are all about. Family, Nation, Protecting Borders, helping the world when needed but not too much, tradition, honor and mercy. He marries into a black wife, lives in a very homogeneous society where all the people have the same values.

Ironically, the whole black liberation non-sense really isn't historically accurate, but the villain is pretty much a BLM supporter. He wants to wage war against non-blacks, wants to put them on top, etc. He's pretty much Black Hitler with daddy and racial issues. He dies, he is finished. He is not the strong one. That's all that matters.

-Weakness

History: It's kind of redundant, but hearing the whole “were slaves by white men” thing just kind of gets old after 160 Years. Also, it never made sense to me when the sister of black panther would call an American a colonizer, when they had no colonies in Africa. They also never touched up upon how Blacks sold other blacks, or how Jewish merchants profited from the Atlantic Slave Trade. There are numerous historic inaccuracies, but it's not a major weakness, because the film is technically fantasy. -Racial Issues: “White Wolf, Colonizer, Saving Another White Boy.” I mean clearly there were jabs at being white in this movie. I only ask if Captain America would say, Blacky, Slave or Black Bull, would it get the same treatment? Also his sister was kind of a rude, flicking his brother off and being just downright indecent at the start. Although later she gets better, not really a racial issue, but I just hate snarky rude arrogant women. What I'm trying to say is: CALL 1800 CHOKE DAT HO

-Side Characters (Villains) I really don't get how the main leader of the blue tribe just easily stops supporting the Black Panther, all over not killing the merchant villain. It just seems forced and lame. I mean, they're pretty much like really good friends, and all of a sudden that just goes out the window because some foreign prince killed a merchant. Also the white villain merchant died to quickly, was hoping he would actually be better. But he was also a throw away character for the most part. Overall I would give it an 8/10, and is about 100000000000 times better than Star Wars the Last Snowflake.

It's a visual feast and the villain is portrayed greatly, whose motives and actions are actually somewhat believable and to a degree justified. I'm assuming a lot of the negative reviews are because the cast is 95% black.... I mean really? WHy wouldn't it be? These are the kinds of things in this day and age people bring up and get all offended about. The story takes place in Africa, and it's main hero is black, what would you expect? I loved the movie, it was entertaining, the villain was done well, and the underlying political message wasn't shoved down our throats, it wasn't screaming for attention but it wasn't going unnoticed. Considering that racism is still rampant in our society I feel as though this movie was needed. The director did a fine job with balancing the two. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Movie is solid - definitely in the better half of the MCU. My biggest disappointment was how they portrayed Black Panther. In the comics, he's god tier strategist. Has contingencies for everything and while they made brief mention to Killmonger's brilliance as a special ops solider, we don't see it as much, particularly since he seems to struggle with the Wakandan guards. I'm just hoping they power him up in the future because he doesn't seem very capable without the help of his fellow Wakandans and that doesn't seem like the Black Panther I remember from the source material. Marvel president Kevin Feige announced late last year that there will be a noticeable difference between Marvel Films Pre-Infinity War and Post-Infinity War, and the latest release from the studio quite clearly proves this point.

Black Panther, mistakenly labeled as the first African-American superhero in cinema: Blade, Storm, War Machine, even Frozone from the Incredibles, has turned into the banner for diversity in the Marvel universe.

Yes, the culture and political standpoints that the film tackles are very relevant and downright powerful at times, yet the mass media seems to want to pigeonhole the film to serve its own political agenda.

The fact of the matter is, Black Panther is a great film because it is a well-executed, well-acted, heartfelt genuine film – that’s all.

The film follows T’Challa who returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to become king, but when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk.

One of the first elements that draw attention is the film’s beautiful color palette which is chock full of vibrant African colors, patterns and ultimately captures the African tradition and weaves it throughout the film’s visual landscape and narrative.

Veteran costume designer Ruth Carter’s designs are immersed in the African custom while reflecting the fantastical elements inherent to the mysterious country and culture.

On a visual level, the film is the epitome of an epic, transcending every Marvel film that has come before: from landscapes to costumes, colors, and cinematography.

Ryan Coogler ensures that his paw-prints are all over the film with many of his now established cinematic language clear in Black Panther, which is another first in the MCU.

Utilizing his signature long takes, and a hand-held camera, Coogler enhances the Marvel experience by truly placing the audience in the middle of the action taking place.

However, some of the CGI work in some of the fight sequences, and the warrior rhinos was noticeable and felt a bit like watching a computer animation film – this may have been an effect of budgetary purposes due to the film’s high production value.

The second most powerful element in the film was its narrative.

Taking on narrative beats that are more akin to Greek Mythology and Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey than typical superhero tale, Black Panther again breaks out of the formula that its predecessors had established.

It trades in two-dimensional heroes and villains, global threats, and rushed weighty moments, with complex characters, focused inner threats, and earns every beat it delivers whether it be a laugh, a tear, or a whoop of excitement.

Yet some of the ideologies within the film to cater to the globalist, let’s all join hands and sing Kumbaya mentality, which is fine in a feature film, but much more complicated in real life.

The dialogue smooth and fun also uses African dialects to enrich and ground the film in the world of Wakanda, though two or three lines did refer to real world YouTube jokes (the “what are those” moment) and political situations (refugees and barriers) which in a way is a bit jarring.

Xhosa, one of the official languages of South Africa, was the language of the fictional Wakanda and subsequently, the Xhosa culture lent itself as a touchstone to the Wakandan citizenry.

The decision behind the language choice was made during the filming of Captain America: Civil War, when celebrated South African actor John Kani, who portrayed King T’Chaka, used his native accent and Chadwick Boseman who plays T’Challa, in turn, picked it up.

Building off of that, the film’s cast is then given enough material to truly dig deep into their performances.

This leads to the third powerful element: Black Panther has one of the best performances from an all-star cast ensemble in a Marvel film.

Both Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan carry the film as protagonist and antagonist, respectively, and give it their all – Boseman as the tortured new ruler of Wakanda, and Jordan as the revolutionary violence prone forgotten son of Wakanda.

The score, a team effort from Kendrick Lamar and Ludwig Goransson, is a vivid audible masterpiece due to its fusion of African culture and instruments.

Overall, the film is a much more than a super-hero film. It is a film about family, duty, and country. Black Panther is a most-welcomed new direction for the MCU and does bring a new level of excitement for the new entries to come.

For a characterI have to agree with the critics - Black Panther is definitely the best MCU movie so far. Truly well written characters, great camaraderie between them, and very heavy underlying themes, unlike your typical comic book movie. For a character that I was never familiar with via comics, Black Panther is an instant fan favourite, and that's not an easy task. It's so much easier to make Spider-Man or the Hulk or Wolverine likeable. To an extent, Iron Man had a similar task on it's hand as he wasn't really an A lister for casual, non comic fans and RDJ just blew our minds. Chadwick Boseman has that same effect minus the eccentricity. He's more Captain America than Iron Man clearly, principles, valor and all that. As a movie, I've never seen anything like it in the MCU, if not for the introduction of Black Panther in the hero heavy Civil War, it might be a rather difficult task reaching casual audiences - that was a masterstroke marketing wise. The connection to MCU (as well as being a run up to Infinity War) is a big advantage and will bring in the green, but not to take away from the fact that it's just a very good standalone movie and an excellent origin story. I wish the villain had more screen time but Michael B Jordan does well with the little time he has and isn't a typical one dimensional villain. I just wish that conflict between them was fleshed out more. Is this my #1 Marvel movie? That title still belongs to Iron Man, but while Iron Man was fun, Black Panther is just stellar. Since it's comic book movies you can see why my # 1 doesn't have to be the best one. Bottom line is, I can't wait to see Black Panther in Infinity War strutting it out with the rest of the Avengers. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black Panther is a great movie as expected from the polished track record of Marvel movies. Black Panther has been a hit due to its depiction of a black protagonist which is a feat already achieved in movie super hero films with blade. However, it is not only about black characters it’s also about African culture and the effects of first world countries have on 3rd world countries in Africa. It brings into light racism, foreign aid and global responsibility. Unfortunately, by the end of the movie it does seem like more of a pretext to the antagonist motive for revenge than to the main themes of the film. The story itself is original twist on the social hierarchy of African countries in the world. The story starts with the main character already being a hero and successor to the throne which progresses the movie faster but does reduce the character development and this is the same for a few minor characters where they are not giving much backstory. The pacing of the film also seems to be a bit off with a lot of the start filling you in on what happened before the film and It seem like it’s back tracking on itself rather than telling a story; However, it does give a mysterious tone early on that sets up the twist in the middle of the film. I like the ending: The movie ends with the villain dying for his cause and the hero is impacted by his view and philosophy to change himself and his countries ways to better improve society and the world.
I believe that character development seems a bit lacking; but I also feel like the cast of the movie has improved the quality of the characters adding need personality. The cast has been praised for its almost all black cast of new and experienced actor mixed together: the actors I was not familiar with where still as capable as the one I was more familiar.
The costume design looks good and a mix of modern with tractional African attire and added to the setting of the film. My only critique to the production of the movie is that there was too much CGI It felt like the CGI was used even when it wasn’t needed and it detached me from the film, for example a lot of the fight scenes with black panther involved incredible acrobatics but it was all in CGI. The music for the first half of the movie was very immersive it was African instrumental music used as action music and was great. The second half of the film felt like a switch where it was action music sounding like African instrumental music or just standard action music.
My full review of Black Panther resulted in some minor critique to a small number of aspect of a great movie with a great plot and rich is in African culture. The quality of the actors and production quality is up to the standard set by Marvel movies and has resulted in a 8/10 from me.

I was pleasantly surprised with this film. Took my kids and wound up more immersed in the plot than even they were. This may be the only film of its genre that I would pay to see again. Clever, action-packed and entertaining in every way.

Is it because it has a BLACK man as the focused hero? I feel like this movie is being judged more as a social "marker" rather than pure entertainment. Kinda like if ROOTS was a superhero flick..is that it? I dunno..people white and black alike are acing like this is something they've NEVER seen before. Seriously? it's a MARVEL flick (hey li'l secret here: THEY'RE ALL DAMM GOOD!). IF this is finally the movie that sucks black people in to watching superhero flix (cuz as one black dude told me long along: see black folk don't do scifi or fantasy..we do gangsta..like Scarface and Boys in Hood, etc. Not Jedis & Hobbits!) COOL! and Welcome to the party (you were NEVER "NOT invited")

I will say that the world building around Wakanda is incredibly interesting and probably my favorite part of the movie. However, while Killmonger may be one of the better villains in the MCU as far as relatability goes, he's just another typical MCU villain in the end. Black Panther will provide you with a satisfying theater experience and is probably one of the more entertaining MCU movies, but don't go in expecting it to be groundbreaking or anything. Expand

The movie holds up well, very strong second and final act, first act is a bit weak and predictable. It's not a 10/10 by any reasonable means. Anyone giving full 10/10 scores are doing it purely out of idiotic ideology.
It's a solid movie making me want to see a sequel.

It's brave inclusion of a reworked African dialogue, accents and afro-futurism is allow for a somewhat clichéd tale of a kings defense of his throne, family and country in the face of a righteous threat. Director Ryan Coogler’s addition to the MCU received acclaim from critics and audiences alike, as well as breaking an impressive $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Perhaps key to the success of Black Panther is the way that it thrills both fans of the superhero flick but also transcends the usual bounds of the genre, in its characters, design and themes. This is a film that subverts the typical Marvel formula, something which is long overdue.
Chadwick Boseman comfortably leads the film as the eponymous hero, venerable monarch by day and suit-sporting vigilante by night. T’Challa rules the nation of Wakanda, a futuristic and technologically advanced utopia shielded by a mask as a third-world nation. T’Challa’s ex-lover, Nakia (played on expected brilliant form by Lupita Nyong’o) fights the case for Wakanda’s moral duty to share the truth of their wealth; this is one of many surprisingly complex questions which weave their way satisfyingly into the narrative. Taking this even further is the film’s villain, Erik Killmonger, a Wakandan isolated from the kingdom, calling for a revolution by black people against their oppressors. Michael B. Jordan is a charismatic villain, wonderful shades of humanity embedded within his performance, providing a fitting and scarily relatable foe for the Black Panther. A spunky ensemble (though prone to spouting exposition) completes the mix, Letitia Wright’s Shuri acting as the Q to T’Challa’s Bond and Martin Freeman delightfully Watson-esque as an obliging CIA agent.
For the most part, Black Panther is a stunning movie to witness, embracing its Afro-futurism with a colourful and vibrant design. The film feels very much buried in its cultural roots, which gives some understanding to the film’s significance. Ludwig Goransson provides a luscious and innovative score and rap numbers courtesy of Kendrick Lamar complement the action. The action sequences in the movie are also riveting; “I never freeze” pronounces T’Challa coolly in an early scene… and neither does the film itself. Pace never lags in relentless and sharp action sequences, gripping the audiences to their seats and, at some points, providing a strong emotional pay-off. The final act is certainly where the film is at its most disappointing, descending into an increasingly loud and banal CGI-fest, which, whilst not uncommon in a Marvel flick, is certainly beneath the calibre of Black Panther. Visual effects are also dodgy at certain instances, oddly plasticky and unfinished-looking. For the most part, however, Black Panther delivers soundly for popcorn moviegoers, never allowing its themes and cultural statements to overtake the pure entertainment.
One only has to see Black Panther to understand the reasons behind its sensation and the whisper of Oscars floating around. Ryan Coogler has crafted a visually staggering blockbuster, which manages to tell an engrossing story, with plenty of popcorn thrills, yet also a remarkably deep cultural message that boasts great relevance. Black Panther is without a doubt one of the most exciting and inventive Marvel outings yet.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A terrific addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This movie brings to the viewers subjects never seen before in the whole Marvel franchise. And it manages to be refreshing despite some same predictable old codes. Tackling some subjects did surprise me but it was made a certain finesse and strength that let the movie breathe without making it too serious or awkward. It gets political without making this fact the whole center of the film.

The soundtrack is the best I've ever heard in a Marvel movie. In addition to that it competes with others movie soundtracks that I may consider as perfect. Ludwig Göransson did an amazing job from A to Z with these orchestral fusions of trap and traditional drums to symbolize the subtle mix of high-level technology and old rituals that characterize Wakanda. Drums may sound a bit repetitive from time to time but I found that they evolve to some intensity in accordance with the pace of the movie. Of course how can't I mention that these pure tracks are embellished by Kendrick Lamar's typical touch and mastery. If few songs did appear in the final cut, they still remain as notable as powerful.

That pace remains a black point in my opinion since 'Black Panther' asks more than two hours to showcase multiple plots reuniting many characters in different timelines and with various objectives. More focus should have been helpful to me as the first half sees the storyline struggling to get going while the second half focuses mainly on fights that enventually interrupt the valuable and so far very interesting development of many characters.

CGI and special effects are another questionable aspect sinc I found there was few to be noticed. T'Challa's armor don't evoke much to me, starships are a bit ugly, weapons feel like toys and some scenes let us easily imagine the green screens. Fortunately these effects were very good on environment, skies and towns. Colors are not to my taste as I found the look of some artefacts too shiny some times (as the necklace) or just to plain and forgettable (as the hand of Andy Serkis).

Michael B. Jordan & Chadwick Boseman's acting skills are quite impressive, even if the last shares more his iconic face and prestance rather than actual acting skills. The presence of so many powerful and involved women is truly agreeable and definitely bring some fresh air in the MCU we know nowadays. In extension to that, the casting is really solid.

What I especially love is the evolution of characters that are moved by meaningful and meaningful values and desires, which tends to make us easily understand why they act or think the way the do.

Thank you for that and RIP Chadwick Boseman.

Enjoyed that!

'Black Panther', the 18th MCU film, is very good. I really like the world building of Wakanda, as well as the cinematography and costume design. The cast are, as expected, excellent as well.

Chadwick Boseman is terrific as T'Challa, as I knew he would be based on the glimpse we see of him in 2016's 'Captain America: Civil War'. He is the best actor here, but Danai Gurira runs him close. I'm a huge fan of Gurira's due to her performances in 'The Walking Dead' so knew I'd rate her here too, she's fun to watch - it's cool to see her weapon-wielding once again.

Elsewhere, Lupita Nyong'o is good and so is Letitia Wright; she's great in 2015's 'Urban Hymn', which I had seen her in previously. It's a fairly stacked cast, with the likes of Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, Daniel Kaluuya and Michael B. Jordan also appearing; Jordan's character isn't the best, but he himself is more than solid.

It was only after the release of that movie that I saw everyone talking about it all the time, and that I had to watch all the movies before I could start watching IW. I had to watch all the movies so that I could catch up in time before Endgame. I had heard a little bit about some random guy named Black Panther getting snapped out by Thanos, but I really didn't care because I had never even heard about this guy my whole life. So after all the movies I had watched, Black Panther was next. I wasn't really interested in seeing this movie because it seemed so much culturally different, but I thought that if I had watched Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man without having known anything about them before, so I can do the same here also.

The first thing that strikes differently about this movie is that this is not exactly a character origin story. Black Panther was already previously introduced in Captain America: Civil War where his father had died, but he was never explained as to why or how he's the superhero. This is the movie which finally explains that part. The world thinks Wakanda is a poor country while in reality it is a powerhouse of vibranium. T'Challa is a leader and the saviour of the people. The king of Wakanda gets to be the Black Panther, for which they have to take the heart shaped herb that helps them acquire knowledge from all the previous Black Panthers.

Other than the superhero himself, N'Jadaka ie Killmonger believes he is the rightful ruler of the kingdom, because of which he challenges T'Challa. From Killmonger's point of view he should be the king because he wants to take revenge fromT'Challa's father T'Chaka for killing his father. The movie spends a good deal over it, such that it allows the viewer to sympathise with him, even though his actions are clearly wrong. Finally N'Jadaka beats T'Challa in the ceremonial fight which allows him to be the Black Panther instead. There are multiple moral dilemmas faced by the protagonists, as to whether let their kingdom be governed by someone who lets his emotions get the better of him or dare to overthrow their own king.

The moral dilemma is actually a very important point in the story, since in the scene where T'Challa, Shuri and Okoye are talking about this, Okoye says it's her duty to serve whoever sits on the throne no matter how the person is. That is a stark contrast from both T'Challa and N'Jadaka, since both of them see beyond their rules to see whom and what to fight for. The Wolf Tribe led by M'Baku is ready to help Black Panther, in spite of having previously faced a humiliating defeat by T'Challa in the Black Panther ceremony. While T'Challa makes allies along the way, N'Jadaka eliminates his allies.

Although the CGI was a bit off in some places, overall it was good. Since I had no idea what I was heading for, I didn't expect to see a Wakanda having such a high technology (I didn't watch any trailer before watching the movie or read any comics). The fight scenes were also pretty fun to watch, except for the Busan one. I didn't like it for some reason which I myself don't know. The acting was also very good. This movie absolutely deserved the Oscar for the costume design. I think it has the best interpretation of the suit as depticted in the comics (only Iron Man comes a close second since it's not as comicbook accurate).

Although this movie is not one of my favourites, it did leave some huge impacts on me. First of all, I have purchased almost all Black Panther comics. Secondly I have become a lot more open to watching movies from Africa, since now I won't be afraid of not understanding anything. And thirdly, it's something I will always remember Chadwick Boseman for. Rest in peace hero, you did a pretty great job.

While it does eventually devolve into your run-of-the-mill, large-scale, CGI-fueled final battle that goes on forever (as most Marvel movies do), everything leading up to that is incredibly compelling. Thought it was solid. Chadwick is a goat and Killmonger was cool too but how is Wakanda's defenses so bad

Black Panther features plenty of special effects and a fair share of action moments but it ends up being one of the slower Marvel movies I can remember seeing. The premise of a Vibranium manufacturing site on Earth feels somewhat underscored and the movie's best villain isn't as cool as he could be. It's hard to put it in to words but I just didn't love Black Panther. It checks most items off the list of an excellent film but its execution almost seems fumbled at times. It's not boring but it's not usually attention-grabbing. One odd thing that stood out was the heavy attention paid to arming black people on Earth to fight what I have to think is white people (and any other people that might be perceived as oppressors). There are some social cues that aren't bad to consider within Black Panther but the racial justice undertone is unbecoming of a Marvel film and it has barely any nod to the Marvel universe. So Avenger shows up anywhere, no alluding to anything going on in the universe elsewhere, no significant tie to where things are going. With the upcoming Infinity Stone, that feels like a major failure to connect. It's good but I think it could have been so much better. Given the cast that it had, I'm surprised that it didn't shine - there's a lot of good talent on screen throughout. Expand

Normally I don't care for Super Hero movies. They all have pretty much the same plot. This one is no different as far as the plot goes and is predictable. I am giving it high marks for the look of the movie, however. Pretty people, prettyNormally I don't care for Super Hero movies. They all have pretty much the same plot. This one is no different as far as the plot goes and is predictable. I am giving it high marks for the look of the movie, however. Pretty people, pretty costumes and make-up, pretty places, good special effects. Fight scenes are just OK with the standard fast editing so you can't tell what's going on, and of course we have the ubiquitous boring car chase that I wish movies would stop doing. There is one flawed scene towards the beginning of the movie where the space ship flies into a bunch of trees and exposes the futuristic city. The city is completely lifeless! No cars, trains, people, other flying machines, etc. Weird. Did they run out of money for the effects? Overall a visual feast but not much else. Expand
