This film, at it’s foundation, is deeply flawed. Awkward dialogue from most characters excluding the lead. The action is unoriginal and hard to become invested in. CGI is below usual Marvel films and story is horribly paced.

I typically get all fanboy over any/all Marvel films. And this one, based on the character, the dynamics socially and MCU related, the trailer and the early buzz, I went into this with too much expectation. If Black panther came in under the radar, maybe it gets bumped to a 7. But the landscape has been set before this and it should have known better!

Boring film overall. Lazy script. Too long a run time. Below par CGI. Uneventful fight scenes. It's not the worst Marvel MCU film to date, but it's down in the bottom 5 for me. I compare what we should have gotten out of this movie to what Dr Strange brought to the MCU. -Introduce a secondary character (to the public not Marvel fans). -Introduce a gift to the MCU that hasn't been explained in prior films (Mystic arts / Vibranium technology). -Give us a villain with a twisted perspective on the respective gift (using mystic arts for immortality/vibranium tech to lift up a culture from oppression). -Build on the MCU to get us excited for what's to come. I left Dr Strange with such joy and thrill from the ride. I left Black Panther bored and thinking, what a waste of 3 hours. I could have gotten to the same place in 1.5 hours and with far less resistance if presented to the audience in a much more fun way.

Shame... Moving on to Infinity War.

I have to say that this was by far the most boring MCU film to date. I was not expecting much when I went to theater, but the film still managed to disappoint me. This is not to say that you cannot be entertained by it, but the perceived greatness relies heavily on the type lens you have. This film, like all other MCU films, got nothing to do with reality, it is a fantasy movie. The setting is somewhat interesting, but even as a fantasy, it forces suspension of disbelief. We know from history that an isolationist state like depicted in the film would not be able to exist. It would stagnate and most likely fall to tyranny at some point. This is conveniently explained away with magic (Vibranium), which makes it slightly more palatable. The film also introduces host of new characters to MCU, which are a mixed bag at best. Some of them are quite cringe worthy, some are not believable, while others do indeed put a solid performance and have development during the film. The plot is probably the strong point of the film. Some will not like it, as it is quite different from other MCU films. However, I did enjoy the plot more than the other parts of the film.

Aesthetically the film was pleasing. However, the over reliance on CGI is noticeable and poorly done at times. The film also lacks action scenes and the few that we have are not very well done. The combination of color, CGI and editing makes some of the scenes look very cartoonish and hard to follow.

I would still recommend the film. Lower your expectation and don't believe the professional film critics. They seems to be outright lying or pandering to perceived audience. It is pathetic.

I also knew, hollywood critics would give it the Get Out treatment. Movies that portray women and blacks in a positive roll will automatically get perfect scores. Regarding Marvel movies, seriously almost all of them are overrated. Knowing nothing about the Black Panther comics, the film doesn't introduce the characters to someone who doesn't know who they are. I was lost the first half of the movie. On top of that, it just didn't make sense. How does vibranium, a metal, create all the tech advancements in Wakanda? The suit I get. Hard metal = bulletproof. But Marvel treats it like its the cure all - medical remedies, magnetic railways and future tech. Thats just lazy. If anything Wakanda could trade it and make a fortune on it boosting their economy and creating their futuristic metropolis. But thats not the case. Its kept a secret, which brings me to the message of the movie - Wakanda hiding while blacks across the world suffer. That is true, they are kinda bad for not helping their neighbors when they were being put in bondage. I won't spoil the story but its kinda like the Lion King. The visuals in this movie are pretty cool and the acting is good but the fights were just meh. I actually was bored most of the time. Just wasn't my cup of tea. Im not giving it a zero because thats just ridiculous. But for me it barely held my attention so 5 it is. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was very excited to see the movie, but it just doesnt hold up to the promising character from Civil war, I really liked the actors and casting but so few of the characters get fleshed out. It really is a big step back for marvel and feels more like a later Sony Spiderman or Xmen movie-actually A LOT like an Xmen movie with the political tone of the movie. I thought the Jabari tribe and the early scenes with Killmonger and Klaw were great, the ridiculous rhinos at the end and the vibranium mountain trains were terrible, but the movies biggest flaw was the lack of acknowledgement of the Avengers, as if Killmonger's plan wouldn't be stopped by the other Avengers. Its OK not great. Expand

Well forget that because this is the Black Panther movie we deserve. Early reactions have been the most positive for a superhero movie in years and as it stands it’s currently the most positively reviewed superhero movie of all time. How’s that for high expectations. So I must admit I’m a little disappointed, for me it has been overhyped to unrealistic expectations. Not as good as I was hoping for and still one of the better solo Marvel movies but I wasn’t blown away at any point.

T’Challa aka the Black Panther aka the new King of Wakanda played by Chadwick Boseman returns home to his technologically advanced African nation that’s hidden from the rest of the world. Because the rest of the world cannot know about the vibranium and all the futuristic machines and weapons they possess because that could cause war and Wakanda are a peaceful nation who don’t want to wage war on the rest of the world even though with all their superpowered vibranium weapons they’d win easily. Anyway enter Andy Serkis and Michael B. Jordan. Also starring Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett. The cast are absolutely perfect, my only criticism is I needed more of Andy Serkis, his manic performance was great and he seemed underused. Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira give standout performances and add that extra wow factor to the action sequences. It’s got the story even though it reminded me of The Lion King / Shakespeare on more than one occasion. Even when everything else around it is a bit over powering the story-line is solid and doesn’t become an over the top mess as is the downfall of recent superhero films. It also has a great villain, with clear motives and nothing ridiculous about him. Honestly I was very concerned when the film first started because I found the opening scene to be one of the most underwhelming scenes to start a superhero movie. That aside, the rest of the film makes up for it. The action sequences are terrific and thoroughly enjoyable even if the film itself didn’t really blow me away. Maybe it came down to all the hype or maybe it was the ridiculous CGI armoured rhinos. It’s not brilliant, I liked it but more importantly you’ll be entertained. Visually stunning and the soundtrack was excellent. Black Panther is a prime example of a good stand alone superhero movie and it’s recommended for all you superhero fans out there.

The movie, from opening to closing, is special effects whether between the actors or in the background or car chases, battle sequences, even in hand to hand combats. Talking about things like fights and car chases, why have one of each when you can have two? Also, let’s have two villains instead of one plus instead of an all-white cast with one, maybe two faces of color, here we have an all-black cast with two white faces.

As with other sci-fi movies this runs around 20 minutes too long but this, in a way, distinguishes itself by having 2or 3 more storylines, even going for Shakespearean plots here and there of kings and queens, family treachery and rivalry. All in all, at certain times it gets convoluted and you just have to shake your head and skip on to the next special effect.

Chadwick Boseman does a fine job as the Black Panther but Winston Duke who challenges Boseman and is another Black Panther at times, except for the shifting color of his costume, makes a good rival. The two scene stealers are Andy Serkis as an over the top villain and Letitia Wright as Boseman’s sister who can cracks jokes that are hilarious, that make you laugh out loud and can walk into any James Bond film as Q and steal that movie from Bond.

Also in the cast are Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Daniel Kaluuyya, Lupita Nyong’o and Sterling K. Brown. It was directed by Ryan Coogler, who also wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, with a lo0t of help- from the editors Michael P. Shawver and Debbie Berman.

Along with Letitia Wright the musical score by Ludwig Goransson are the two outstanding features of the movie.

“Black Panther” will obviously appeal to the millions of sci-fi fans and Marvel comic followers and by the same token not appeal to the rest, like me!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film presents a very solid 1st hour with many action scenes, a great presentation to the characters and the culture and a great villain, and I do not mean Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) but Klaue (Andy Serkis) who should have been the main villain in this movie and leave the character of Jordan for the sequel. Since Klaue seemed like a villain that should be explored more and the performance of Andy Serkis is phenomenal, I did not like that they killed him so fast. And I think that there is the main problem of the film, the 2nd hour of film, after the death of Klaue, the film falls, it becomes long, boring and predictable, and has moments (in my opinion) a little ridiculous.
Even so, the soundtrack (which I liked the inclusion of modern rap songs and traditional African music), the CGI and the cinematography are excellent.

That Ryan Coogler shows a glimpse of what could be possible with these movies just heightens the feeling of disappointment that comes from watching great potential squandered by obsequious mediocrity. Watching the movie is like watching a great artist coloring inside the lines, doing his best to push the boundaries without being able to do anything too risky or original in deference to the mandated design he's working within. With Creed, Coogler proved that he could breathe life and a fresh perspective into stagnant intellectual property, working his magic within the confines of studio product. With Black Panther, the MCU proves just how resistant it is to the intelligence and artistry of a filmmaker like Coogler. Coogler at least manages to maintain much of the film's dignity and strong sense of purpose, largely avoiding the self-reflexive slapstick and one-liners that have rendered lesser Marvel fare into patronizing pantomimes. At its best, the movie slows down enough to focus on its characters and themes, with the good, but uneven, cast doing its best to imbue personalities into thinly-written ciphers that are never allowed a full range of emotion beyond "good," "petulant," and "dignified." At its most crowd pleasing, the film pays homage to James Bond and Star Wars/Star Trek, influences that are not far from the actual comic book source material. At its worst, the movie goes out of its way to deflate any sense of suspense, tension, escalation, or subtext to the point where the plot becomes repetitive and predictable, marginalizing the promising story and trivializing what should be an epic conflict with emotional stakes. The distinctive production design, eclectic score and better-than-average cinematography goes a long way to building an enticing new world, but as the film barrels on through its checklist of studio demands, it all starts to seem like nothing more than a theme-park trinket given a fresh coat of paint and passed off as a priceless artifact. As one of the many exposition-heavy characters states in the film’s typically banal dialogue, "It's not magic. It's technology." A decade into the MCU, this now seems like a corporate mission statement, as the potential magic inherent in cinema is relentlessly drowned out by the whirring of studio machinery. Ultimately, Black Panther is an exercise in compromise representing a huge step back for Ryan Coogler but a small step forward for Disney/Marvel. If you liked the 15 or so Marvel movies that preceded this one or don't expect much from the genre except for fun-for-the-whole family spectacle, you'll probably like Black Panther. If you feel the franchise has been hit-or-miss or has lost its luster through sheer force of repetition, there's nothing here that will likely change your mind. If anything, watching Coogler strain against franchise formula will serve as a reminder of the inherent flaws in this seemingly foolproof design. Expand

But ultimately inBlack Panther was an awesome movie in general. Built out the character more than was expected, as in introducing some back story to him, and expending on a piece of the Marvel Universe that many people wouldn't know about. But ultimately in the hype and general build up towards it's release, it does fail in living up to the character that should have been shown. Without going into too many spoilers, as a King of a nation, genius, enterpeturer and all round good guy, one would expect that a person of this calibre, who has shown foreigners in the past and present much respect and forgiveness, who has shown general wisdom throughout the Marvel plot line, would actually shown their own citizens more respect and thoughtfulness. The story does seem to meter out after the first half boiling down to a generic "The sins of the father are to be laid upon the children" fiasco, while being somewhat good, it does become too clean cut. Also in my own preference, there should have been scenes in the "language" of Wakanda in the movie throughout, not just when a change of country occurred or they didn't feel like speaking the native language within the Capital of their own city, this did break the authenticity of the narrative to a degree. It's another feather in the cap of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, do with it as you like. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rather bad, over hyped.
I was putting a lot of hope in that movie, and I guess as a lot of people I was really hyped about it. But in the end, the movie was too long, boring, and with a poor scenario. Luckily the special effects and dresses were good, but overall acting was really bad...

About acting : M.B.Jordan and D.Gurira acting were good, C.Boseman was ok. While W.Duke and L.Wright were quite bad. The other were just... transparent. But I think this come more from the directing than the actors themselves. I think Ryan Coogler as a big part in this overall poor acting, the actors were probably not "push" and just easy with their acting..

About dressing : This is the best part of the movie, lot of nice dresses, colorfoul, designed, mixed, interesting.

Visual effects : Between good and bad.. The actions were too fast and even blur on screen for the panther, and CGI was crap, really amateur. But big group action in daylight were better and pleasant to watch, even though not extraordinary.

Music : I guess it is a matter of taste, I enjoyed it but.. it was a bit too much sometime and always the same, which in the end was almost getting annoying.

Scenario : BAD. I think scenario and poor acting just ruined the movie (with directing). The movie was too long, while you can resume it in 10s. It was the typical bad people steal good people, then a bad guy try to conquest a good guy throne, then in the end the good guy win. There was a bit of political, mixing poor punchline "your ancestor stole mine", "bring in another little white guy"(I am translating from french), "I would rather die like my ancestor", so not developped at all and really cheesy. The characters were also not developed at all, except maybe Killmonger, what a waste.
And what about the joke ?? I didn't even smiled, it was just BAD. Like this one "I will eat you blabla... kidding we are vegan" like seriously ?? Was it written by a 7 yo kid ??

Conclusion : Good special effects, good dresses, bad acting, bad scenario, bad jokes and punchline, and I guess very bad directing. Resulting in one of the worst Marvel, at the same level of transformers or last iron-man. Disapointing and over-hyped.

This movie is alright. The script is kind of just The Lion King but with superhero stuff. The CGI is some of the worst I've ever seen in a big-budget production like this. Again, it isn't bad, but an 88/100 is a bit much. I'd say it's a 7/10 at best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The same film heralded, largely rightfully, as a triumph in social justice and racial equality is also tragically-written. Ironically, the villains are killed or silenced alongside the theme of black liberation, an outcome demonized enough for the most advanced black cultures in the world to slaughter one another over their weapons being used to crush the oppression that economically, socially, technologically and geographically strangles the rest of the world's black cultures, even avoiding saving the world and instead entrusting this task to a white guy inexperienced with their technology.

Disney's opportunistic marketing would seem to be largely responsible for its box office success, alongside public discontent being easily pacified with commercial purchases. This seems more plausible than an indication of Hollywood becoming accessible to minorities or less racist.

It was another dumb comic book movie and maybe not a great choice as a cultural icon of our time, though the obvious qualities of its largely-black cast and the achievement of Hollywood blockbuster diversity are intact. This was a rather average couple hours of cultural appropriation as I was told what to care about, even when the rather poorly-written-and-oft-acted alleged supervillain wasn't talking smack like someone who enjoys cold, plain oatmeal. I find it appalling that critics are heaping praise upon that performance. The female characters, and even title character, I have few complaints about, if any, as they exist in the confines of this story. They are well-acted and largely well-written.

Observe, however, as they butcher both the sequence of major plot points and the villain's otherwise understandable motivations (black freedom and vengeance), often with the cheap, lazy, typical Hollywood blockbuster writing and acting of 90% of his lines and character development. This was a below-average Marvel flick from our friends at Disney.

This movie is monumental for a couple reasons, the irony of this being commodified cultural appropriation aside. The inarguably necessary potential advancements for representation in major media a la Obama in politics (we have been simultaneously bombing these seven countries and leading all five of these wars since well before he left office) and the blatant blaxploitation.

You can't just throw Huey P. on a wall in Oakland projects, give the character gold fronts and a dead father, speak in slang, have him kill and assault a few women, not to mention hundreds of others, blacks among them by his own admission, before demonstrating his combat prowess in ritual ceremony and expect absolution, nor for the mood to be empathetic and redemptive, some much-needed homecoming nor reunion. It was a bit telling how at the climax, all the black characters are fighting each other, instead of the oppression they speak of throughout the movie. Black liberation dies with the villains. Further, the son kills his brother-cousin just as his father manslaughtered his uncle and the task of directly stopping the escape and imminent activation of Wakanda's collective ultra-advanced weaponry with a futuristic Augmented Virtual Reality Remote piloting system is given to a white guy, allowing him to operate a spaceship he has never flown in because he used to be a pilot, who then completes the task without further sacrifice beyond his previous bullet to the spine to save the Panther's sister. It felt too reminiscent of African American history, outside of media let alone inside it, to sit well, despite the paternally and historically separated son uniting with brothers and sisters in his ancestral homeland in not-Africa. Because he was an ****

Other notes: I dug all the dream sequences during the ceremonies as well. The costumes were fantastic. The capital city of Wakanda (or was the city itself Wakanda?) did make one wonder what a major city would look like in Africa if it weren't overtaken. The friend I watched it with had no idea that either the General and Rhino Master (no affection shown for each other besides a couple lines throughout, which also completely nullified any drama when he lays down his weapon at her demand without event) were a thing nor that Michael 'G. Boredom' and his supposed Bonnie were a thing. Her getting merc'd didn't have enough setup to work emotionally - just more wanton misogynistic violence. Choosing the REAL villain twist probably required more effort being put into Killmonger, as I thought Claue was well-setup by that time in a great a performance by Andy Serkis, as himself.

I saw a lot of talented people being wasted on a very lazy story, that tried to claim Vibranium is not only stronger than Adamantium (which it is not according to Marvel), but is the key to unlocking Star Trek level tech across the board. The overall effect is just to jump the shark and begs the question, where the hell were these guys/gals when the world was about to be destroyed the last few times? It was still a good film, but far from being the best. It seemed to be dry in comparison of other comic films such as Wonder Woman and Thor. It had an apparent political message that may have worked but still I prefer action over politics in my comic book based movies. The acting was great. The story was good. The cinematography was excellent, but it just seemed to lack something to make it click. The plot line was also predictable. Not my favorite comic book movie, but it was still worth watching. Expand

It is true that this movie is unique because of 90% of actors in this blockbuster are blacks. I have never seen such movie before and I don´t mean it is a bad idea. But only this fact can not make from movie a good movie. At least I got this feeling.
The story is stupid. Actor's performances are average. English-African accent is irritating after 5 minutes. The contrast of the rich and technologically advanced mini country in poor Africa is ridiculous. Scenes from Korea are a parody of secret agent movies. Costumes generally fit into some adult movies. Another Black panther. No, thank!

It was a shame about all the political agenda garbage they shoe horned in. It added nothing to the film and sometimes it was just lazy racist jibes, seemed really out of place for a Marvel film.

200 million budget, I don't know what they spent it on. It definitely wasn't that windows 95 CGI or the 3 to 4 tiny sets they made for the entire film.

Plus point is that Disney did another Casino based scene and it didn't suck arse. The South Korea bit was great and Micheal B Jordan redeemed himself from Fan4stic. The hard line Army General actress (don't know her name) was a show stealer for me.

One of the weaker ones so far, weakest of phase 3 by a stretch. Shame because I was hyped for it and came out really disappointed. 5/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. Everyone treats it as this cultural phenomenon. The truth is, actually, that its very mediocre. Compared to other MCU films, this is one of the worst. T'Challa is extremely boring and uninteresting in this movie. The character motivations don't make sense at all. Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger (the highlight of this movie) has good intentions and wants to treat poverty in the rest of the world. Black Panther wants to stop him. The motivations are flipped. The side characters are stale and their jokes don't hit at all. The movie does a good job of using Andy Serkis's and Michael B. Jordan's acting skills but forgets about the rest of the cast. Also, the CGI. What the **** was that **** A movie with a $200 million budget shouldn't look like someone drew it in "Paint". It is absolutely embarrassing. Expand

I really thought I was going to see something more special topics wise, but there was nothing. Marvel hyped its **** to the gods yet again. I think Wonder Woman last year was slightly better for example. Without being a masterpiece either obviously. I never fall into the hype with these basics flicks and I keep being correct about it everytime I end checking one of these super hero flicks. Entertaining. Nothing else. The scores by critics are IN THIS CASE definitely VERY inflated by what it meant as a movement more than by the (non-existent) quality of the film. Expand

"Did he freeze?"

So this is kinda late since the hype for Marvel's latest entry is slowly dying down, until 'Infinity War' hits and everything else will be history. Black Panther is a good movie, but sadly not a great one. There's a lot of great things about it and boy was it a joy to watch. The problems on the other hand aren't something to overlook.

Ryan Coogler is an excellent director with his previous work on 'Fruitvale Station' and Creed''. While I think he stumbled a bit with this movie since it's a much bigger movie and the studios breathing down his neck, but at least he brought a brand new superhero in style.

Chadwick Boseman is a great actor and the portrayal of T’Challa/Black Panther was pretty good. I do think he got overshadowed by everyone else, mostly from the supporting actors. After the death of his father, T’Challa goes through a dilemma when being face with taking over the throne and rule his land. However, not once do you feel his struggle and wasn't presented as a challenge. If I have to be honest, he was more interesting in 'Civil War'. Still this is just the beginning for him. Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright all three serve as supporting characters, but in reality are what glues the movie together and really hold their own in this big budget movie. Even Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman hold their own as well.

Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger is the best villain in the MCU so far. What makes him so compelling to watch isn't because he wants to take over the world or has any magical powers. Just like the Joker, you can't disagree with his arguments of honesty and truth, which is best served cold. Not saying Killmonger is up there with the Joker as the best, but pointing out an example of what separates him from bland. I'm glad Marvel is improving.

The villain problem being solved isn't just one thing, but the score as well. Taking influences from Africa cultural for it's score. Having a little touch of 'The Lion King' in the mix. I liked the technological side of Wakanda and how it blends with the costume designs which had a unique presentation. From any other superhero franchises out there, this is the most refreshing in terms of style. I'm starting to see a difference now.

For problems: The fight scenes are either too dark or anything memorable. Maybe both. The visual effects were shockingly bad and looked unfinished. There wasn't a single frame that I would call 'good'. Looking like cut scenes from an old video game. Wakanda itself didn't feel like a real place in this cinematic universe, because I'm just assuming there only used two build sets for the movie (that's not CGI), where you see characters walk around a street on repeat.

There's literally a scene in this movie where a character yells "what are those!" and I almost sunk into my seat from cringe. The plot is predictable, like most Marvel movies. There's a fake out death that last for 10 minutes, acting like they are gone forever. The reason why this doesn't work is not once do you buy into it and since it's a major character who's going to be in 'Avengers Infinity War', if you've seen the trailer.

Overall rating: Just a reminder, I enjoyed the movie a lot and I don't hate it. Heck, just forget what I just said right now. This is just another home run for Marvel and there's nothing stopping them. I mean, it's been 10 years guys, like wow.

The scene in the casino with that one dude that was missing an arm was really entertaining, and I was hoping for more action of the main characters fighting in other countries. But, they just kind of ended that abruptly and went in a completely different direction with the plot. The first villain was entertaining and had a funny personality. The second villain was stupid and his personality was just revenge. The love side plot was predictable, but not distracting to the story. They did a good job of explaining the backstory of the country and the whole deal with the father and his brother. The ending was **** and got confusing. I liked most of the characters, music, and design of the futuristic dealies. The ending was the main thing that ruined for me. I liked where it was going in the beginning, but over all... Black Panther is set a few months after Civil War, which is what I understood from the movies marketing. The movie follows T'Challa and his friends and family. T'Challa is a young prince tasked with becoming King of Wakanda after his father's recent death. This gives T'Challa a very deep moral conflict between being a good king like his father once was and making smart decisions in the ever-expanding world. The character development in this film is shaky, but I got a basic idea of the roles of each character. The CIA outsider character was extremely underdeveloped, however, with his role just being to be the guy who has no idea what is going on, but doing a few heroic acts along the way. The villain is one of the best parts of this film, with his character being developed beyond just "evil black panther". This film touches on some very real issues, such as poverty, neglect, and racism, with some subjects blown up a little more than I would've liked. The character development could've used some work, but you don't just go see a Marvel Movie just for the characters. You go to see them for the action, and oh boy is there a lot of that. The action sequences were phenomenal well executed, and the talented cast along real martial arts moves and fighting help bring these to scenes to life. I never felt disoriented, wondering who was fighting who or who was winning, which is an astounding accomplishment many movies strive for. The Marvel movie formula demands that there is a lot of crunching stabbing, and of course table-smashing. Along with the action sequences was the comedy, which was a little underwhelming, but enjoyable none the less. As far as the movie goes, it was very predictable and there was no genuine surprise in what happened next. The movie has by the numbers progression wise, with a seasoned Marvel fan being able to tell what the next step the movie will take. Overall, the movie was a rather enjoyable experience, even if it is dubbed down with a predictable plot and some shaky character development, I would still say it is worth a watch just for the excellent action scenes and wonderful art style and costume design, as well as a gripping emotional journey through the hidden land of Wakanda. On top of that, some threads went nowhere, others could have been resolved by better communication (which is a lazy tactic used far too often in a lot of films). When things were introduced, you could immediately predict when and how they would come back later in the movie as a plot point or setpiece every time. I did appreciate the more serious tone. 4/10.

Overall, I wished I was watching the characters in any other movie. The done before plot dragged the entire movie down. It's hard for a movie with great acting, likeable and diverse characters, and great visuals to feel boring, but Black Panther did. It showed enough promise to earn a sequel, and I hope it will build on the successes of this movie with a more interesting story.

It's like critical affirmative action and actually insulting to serious black artists in all media to overpraise such junk just to be PC. I never go to Marvel films, so maybe they are all as cheesy as this, for all I know. But this movie has pathetic production values compared to Star Wars A-list movies, for example. But at the heart of the film is simply preposterous nonsense. It's pathetic that some African Americans seem to find the movie somehow uplifting or inspiring. It will be great if the movie teaches black kids that STEM courses might be cool, so they should work hard in school. But what's with the fantasy that there's a magic African country that bears no relationship whatsoever to the real black African world? The late great black cultural critic Stanley Crouch used to talk about how African Americans need to stop being "lost" by orienting themselves strictly to the truth and reality as their only hope for actual advancement for themselves individually and for their race in America. The silly fantasies of Black Panther are a step backward into flattering fantasies of lostness, instead of a serious grappling with things within the black community holding blacks back. Expand

But I feel it was very by the books, generic and extremely predictable. Most of the humor in this movie was off, just a few really worked for me and the audience it seems. Since there was very few people laughing in the theater I was in, and that is rare for these MCU movies. The dialogue in general was also not that good, they should have made a smarter script with more interesting dialogue. It lacked nuance and personality in my opinion.

The movie had some enjoyable action sequences, but most of it was nothing that blew me away really. I feel the action with Black Panther in Civil War was better, more focused and clear. Personally I think Okoye had the best action scenes in the movie, and if I am not wrong, she even had her own theme. Her action scenes was a high point in the movie for me.

And I have to say I don't get the praise for Killmonger. For a villain he had reasonable motives for once, but I felt his character lacked any real depth too. I really hate it when they have to give us a big list of exposition to give us an idea of how strong he is, instead of showing how strong he is throughout the movie. I really think they should not have had two villains in this movie and just focused on Killmonger. And character Ulysses Klaue was wasted in this movie. I don't know much of the comics for Black Panther, but I thought he was like his main nemesis.

That being said, I still enjoyed the movie. While the dialogue was so so, the actors did a good job. I loved the world building and most of the visuals in this movie was breathtaking. Besides some iffy CGI here and there. The music was excellent and some scenes in this movie was a perfect blend of scenery and music. There was a few moments where everything truly clicked and it was cinema perfection.

Overall I think the movie is a flawed diamond as it has moments of perfection, and for the most part it is truly gorgeous to look at. But it has some rough edges that really could use polish.

So I am not sure where I would rank this movie on the MCU scale. I think it lands somewhere in the middle as it is not among my favorites, not even close. But I am excited for the future of Black Panther as I do want more of Wakanda. I am excited for his part in Avengers Infinity War.

The movie has an AMAZING cast, which they totally send to waste with bad dialogue and quick deaths. It starts in an amazing way, fooling you in believing that you will see a quality movie; but it ends up being a Marvel movie, and one on the low level. It has a weak story and a villain that ends up not living up to the expectations. The actions scenes are okay, but not much; they use too much CGI on the fighting scenes and it leaves you disappointed on the quality of it. Everyone hope to see a strong statement on racism or even a good superhero introduction, but it shows us again that Disney does not knows what to do with its movies. Expand

As much as Chadwick Boseman is to be admired for his previous stellar efforts, he's in over his head here, coming across as one of the blandest action-adventure figures in some time. Of course, it probably doesn't help that he and the rest of the cast are working with a script full of cookie cutter predictability, an insufficient back story for the protagonist's alter ego, underwhelming special effects and excessive earnestness that borders on implausibility. For a movie that's been drawing raves, I expected a lot more than what it actually delivers. Expand

One on hand, the critics are raving for this movie, saying it is a "game-changer" and things of the sort, but on the other hand, we have regular people saying the movie is "decent". I, like the majority of those that have seen this film, would have to agree that it is simply...decent. I cannot disagree more with the critics when they say that this movie is "game-changing" and "revolutionary", because if you get past the nice visual effects, this film is rather dull, not to mention cliché.

Not even half an hour into this film, I found myself wanting it to end, or at least begin living up to the hype, but the unfortunate truth is that something of the sort never came around. The action was really the only thing keeping this movie afloat, that and the visual effects which seem to be the best part of this production. At times I was simply in awe of how beautiful some of the scenery was, only for that admiration to be decimated by your classic superhero-movie-moment, or, perhaps even worse, a very cheesy joke. In my opinion, the dialogue is so bad, it rivals the Star Wars prequels, and that is an accusation I would never take lightly.

So, if you're like me and have been a huge fan of the MCU, definitely see this film because you won't feel like you wasted time on this film. Keep in mind, however, no matter what the critics say, there is nothing that this film does that has not been done in nearly every single superhero film to date. Not revolutionary, simply entertaining.

I went into this movie with high expectations due it's critical acclaim...i was severely let down and i think it hurt my viewing of the movie.

I really don't understand what the critics were watching compared to what i watched. I can see this movie got only positive reviews? nothing neutral or negative? critics afraid to give the users their true review? even masterpieces like the Godfather and Lord of the rings have their naysayers!

This movie isn't as groundbreaking as the critics would have you believe. I don't understand the CGI...at times it looks pretty good then other times it looks like they ran out of budget? not consistent and really drags down the film as panther himself is mostly CGI (during action scenes).

I had Star wars phantom menace vibes during the Wakanda council meeting!

Overall the movie isn't bad but it isn't great either. The one great thing about this movie is killmonger. Michael B. Jordan is amazing bar his not so fantastic four reboot.

User scores should have more weight than critics as it seems not all critics are genuine (please see Ghostbusters 2016, Star Wars: The Last jedi 2017). That can be said about user scores as well BUT as you can see from the numbers, there are maybe a few dozen critics, so each score is weighted more and when you look at the users, those trying to sabotage or praise to high are often offset by the majority (1800+ user reviews for black panther).

I don't understand what all the hype and super praises are about. It's an average Marvel movie and, quite honestly, to say this is the best marvel movie ever sounds like way too much.

The movie is ok and here's why I think so: 1 - this plot has been exploited time and again;

2 - the villain is uninteresting and his character development (if we can call it that) feels very rushed;

3 - the movie tries to be too much for its own good: a super hero movie, a political dilema, social justice and equality. I mean, nothing wrong with all those, but the mix just didn't blend well here. Sure the message is amazing, the feminine empowerement is fantastic and the cast overall is very strong. Too bad it's wrapped in a slow-paced, mostly predictable movie.

4 - the action scenes - the few ones as the movie focuses more in story telling and slow-paced drama - are lackluster. It's a super hero movie and as such I believe people expect to see action and cool fighting/action/adventure scenes. Black Panther's moments in Civil War are much more exciting than most of this movie. Also, he looks much more powerful, interesting and on purpose there than here.

The mid and post credit scenes are awesome. Marvel never lets us down in those.

6 sounds really fair here: 4 for the social message it conveys + 2 as a movie that doesn't fit it's category and that doesn't honor the universe it comes from.
