One of the weakest movies marvel has put out. Very poorly developed characters and very standard, generic action scenes. Nothing special or interesting about it.

Average score for an average movie.

The story was kinda boring, the characters didn't have much character, the CGI was iffy.

A culturally relevant- and long overdo- blockbuster film featuring a superhero based on a highly underrepresented minority; bravo for that. Trouble is, Black Panther just isn’t a good movie.

I’m sure some of my disappointment stems from the fact that I haven’t had the crushing experience of consuming media my entire life wherein the protagonist doesn’t resemble me, then finally seeing a mega-budget Hollywood spectacle featuring a superhero who does (I’m white). I can intellectualize it- and think it must be a revelation- but I’m not able to truly feel the same weight of the film that an African-American might.

Unable to fully absorb the film’s weight, I’m left to judge the movie solely on its merits as entertainment. I’m sure the movie loses something when those two things are divorced from one another, but for better or worse, it’s the only perspective I’ve got.

Black Panther’s acting was hit or miss, the action sequences were shot in a way that made them nearly impossible to follow (even a massive suspension of disbelief isn’t enough to get over the total obliteration of physics), and while the storyline was fairly straightforward, it’s presented in a superficial and confusing way with zero emotional impact. Also, there’s a special material that’s central to the plot and it’s beyond ridiculous. The stuff can very literally just do and be anything and everything the script calls for, it’s a bridge way, way, way too far. On the plus side, the setting was unique and impressive and the women warriors were portrayed as fierce, highly intelligent and principled. And, of course, Andy Serkis was his usual scene stealing self.

It’s a Marvel movie- and a subpar one at that- only elevated by its cultural significance (which, however, shouldn’t be the least bit minimized).

But I do not agree to all the praise that this movie received...there are tons of better superheroes flicks out there and I liked Age of Ultron version of Black Panther more

Watched Black Panther yesterday. Good movie overall, but definitely overrated.

For once, the MCU entertainment formula didn't serve its purpose in a movie where the absence of formulaic comedy would have been gladly taken.

As opposed to Thor: Ragnarok, The Avengers or Iron Man, Black Panther had several opportunities to make the jump from 'everyday comic book movie' to Sci-Fi Must - as 'Star Wars' Must, the kind of must where you can picture yourself wandering in Wakanda, a fictive country with a universe bigger to discover than all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

So what can we say about this movie? Well, obviously the missed opportunities to reach higher grounds. Which appears more and more frustrating as the movie goes on.

Is it true to the MCU? Yes, sure.

Too much? Yes, as the limit can be seen from the moment when the plot is given straight forward, just like every other MCU movie where this formulaic template follows. From then on, the magic you felt up to the second half of the movie is slowly fading away.

So much potential going to waste yet again, thanks to a cinematic universe.

If you are a Marvel fan, watch it.

If you're more into movies, don't.

If You expect politics with this one, better know your real world politics first. Wakanda is pretty much as Nationalistic as South Africa was during Apartheid. So please. Try to leave the politics out of it and see it as entertainment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say, while it is an entertaining movie, it is not the monstruous marvel most people are claming it out to be. I don't know if it was the fact that the Black Panther was teased and introduced in Civil War in a way that made me heighten my expectations, but I came out heavily disappointed.

The visuals are good, taking out some details here and there, but while I was expecting them to elaborate more on T'Challa's character, I found out it was just an empty shell when it came to character development and an engaging plot. I honestly expected a lot more than I've got, and there wasn't a single redeeming quality throughout the film that could save it. It seems that it was placed to glorify black actors that, while they have been underappreciated, it just was made in such a way that turned overall ridiculous, like a sort of 'empowerment' and 'coolness' that just wasn't there because the writers didn't bother with a well-developed script. They could have made a much more interesting story out of what they had to work with, and instead it just felt like a b-side to merely set some background for what's to come (infinity war).

T'Challa's character was bland and uninteresting, lacked a backbone and depth. A major disappointment, since he was depicted differently in CACW. Nakia was plain as well, which I found unfair for such a talented actress, and while they tried to make her more at some points, I felt like their efforts fell flat. Her kiss at the end with the king had as much chemistry as the one between Sharon and Steve in CACW. I wish they stopped pushing pointless 'romantic' relationships and focused more on the characters as complex people and their development.

Shuri was so-so. I feel like I would have liked her more if they'd worked more on her, but whatever. The villain's motivations where aimless and clichéd, and I feel like everyone is trying to make him more than what he really is. A resented child in a disfunctional home who thinks it's okay to bend everyone to their will because he says so. Boring.

The rest of the characters... don't even ask me. When you make the secondary characters be as uninteresting as they managed here, despite having good things to work with, you know you're doing a **** job.

(By the way, Okoye and W'Kabi's relationship? Pointless, unnecessary, they tried to add depth to their actions by taking this shortcut. No wonder it failed).

Overall, it was entertaining, the kind of entertaining you find a movie on a sunday when you're home bored and have nothing else to watch. Eat some popcorn, watch some mindless entertainment. I think actually some movies should be made for the sake of entertainment alone, but not all of them. And honestly? This sort of crossed the line.

Anyway the plot is fine I suppose. The only character I liked throughout the film was T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) he was likable for the most part. My problem is that there was no scene that really stuck with me like all the other films in the MCU and for that it was pretty boring. The acting is brilliant however. They made the scenes a lot more believable. I did like the idea of Wakanda being technologically superior surrounded by third world poverty and the moral dilemmas it could bring up (However unrealistic) It's a lot like the comics in some ways but despite everything good, the clear political agendas really take away from the experience. This film would have been AMAZING if only people like the film for the contents of the characters and not the race of the characters. Expand

Black Panther is a good but not great superhero film. Certainly it's not superb, as the SJW critics may have led you to believe.

It's amazing to view the fictional Wakanda country in film, a technologically advanced african state isolated from the outside world and posing as a 3rd world country. Black Panther's tech and gadgets rival those of Iron Man and Batman. And certainly it's refreshing to view elements of african culture.

Unfortunately Black Panther is a film more concerned about not sparking any kind of controversy and appealing to SJWs than telling a captivating story. Marvel movies have usually been average in the storyline department (except for a few great movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier) but Black Panther suffers in this respect. It's not just the SJW undertone which I dislike. It's a story a bit too similar to Disney's The Lion King, and everything's predictable. The street car chase in South Korea is fantastic but battles are underwhelming, and the final one is a big mess. The Black Panther vs Killmonger fight is really bad. Other than Black Panther's throne there was not really anything bigger at stake, despite the efforts of the writers to add a sense of danger because Wakandan weaponry may spread out of the fictional country's borders.

Also the Black Panther movie is not really connected to the wider MCU, aside from the inclusion of Agent Ross from Civil War and the return of Ulysses Klaw from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I like Chadwick Boseman posing as Black Panther, but the movie was a slight disappointment for me. I hope his next solo movie will be better. Now he's set to come back in Avengers: Infinity War.

Somehow it's being talked about as 'important', but for all its well-intended and rather limited redress of colonialism, it's really more of the same in another form. For some reason, all the actors are forced to use an exaggerated 'nowhere we know in Africa' accent, that makes it about as progressive as an episode of 'Allo 'Allo. It's a curious Western fantasy of high-technology, magic weapons, and mag-lev trains, but also of people who are ruled just as much by violence, monarchy and tradition (while maintaining an abiding love of ceremony, mask-wearing, totemic animals, dancing, patterned fabrics and riding armour plated Rhinos). Therefore it's assumptions are largely shaped by the very colonialism it apparently sets out to critique. What it probably does reveal is a confusion around attitudes to Africa at the border of US identity politics. The resulting mess is interesting to think about, but as a film is over-long and crawls to a somewhat predictable end. However, by playing the game of positing a mythical technically superior African nation, it both reshapes Africa to be like the West, while revealing that it is the only standard it thinks anything is worth measuring something by. Even the idea of Africa bringing 'aid' to America was wasted in sincerity, rather than rye satire. Again this is because it honours the foreign saviour myth it really should have done a job of demystifying. Expand

"Black Panther" is so ridiculously overrated by fans and critics alike it's incredible, although I can see why. The film makes such a great statement in the celebration of African culture, that it's not hard to see why critics like it so much. However this does not a good movie make, and the fact that a large number of fans would consider those who dislike the movie "racists" is absolutely outstanding to me. The first half of the movie is so unessacary and boring, that the majority of it could have been completely removed from the film without making any difference to the main plot whatsoever. In fact, the movie technically starts about halfway into the running time, as that's when the actual story kicks in. The special effects are very average and under-par, which was rather dissapointing for me considering this is a Disney movie, who recently released quite possibly one of the most stunningly beautiful movies ever- Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The green screen is painstakingly obvious at points that it made me forget what was actually going on, and it actually ruins one of the most emotional moments of the movie for me. A lot of the acting is rather poor, and even the main cast (except one who I'll mention later) are surprisingly average. However, the movie really picks up speed towards the second half of the movie, there are a lot less unessacary jokes and the story actually becomes rather interesting. I want to watch the movie again just to see the second half, as that is the most exciting part of the production. The finale is thrilling and although the choreography wasn't great it was still amazing to watch. The second half is also when the best part of the movie comes into play- Michael B.Jordan. He puts in a stellar performance, and I was so much more interested in his character than I was with almost everyone else. He is the most developed marvel villain in a long time. Other than that there weren't very many positives, and although this movie is a fantastic celebration of culture it has many issues unknown to blinded fans and critics. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is shockingly bad, considering how late it comes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I have a lot to go through, but the short version is that if you're looking for anything other than a time-killer this will probably disappoint you.

Let's get one thing out of the way: while Black Panther is undeniably cool and sets a standard for diversity, the entire premise of Wakanda is troubled. I can't knock the movie too much for this, considering they must have wanted to stay true to the source material. But it would all have gone down a lot easier if Wakanda's timeline was shortened to a few generations. It is simply too big a pill to swallow to believe a super-advanced society has existed for millenia while Africa has been getting **** over. Your mileage may vary on this, but personally I hoped the movie would make this aspect more palatable.

The first thing I noticed was the movie's poor cinematography and awful CGI. The opening action setpiece takes place at night, and you'll just have to imagine what is happening because no amount of adjusting the picture will let you see anything. Obviously it's a challenge to portray a man dressed all in black stealthily taking out some bad guys at night. But a more gifted filmmaker would have found a way to at least imply BP's movement (i.e. muzzle flashes or moonlight glinting off the shiny parts of his suit) in the scene. This is by far the worst example, though the final battle against Killmonger is also a bit confusing. However, the movie in general has a lot of static shots that just don't bring any dynamism. The CGI in the entire movie is poor and really sours the amazing choreography. By comparison, the opening CGI story of Wakanda and the scenes in the Ancestral Realm fit those scene much better.

The story isn't awful as a whole, but it clearly needed a rewrite to focus all the elements. As it is, the movie is part origin story, part coming-of-age, part social commentary, part comeback tale--but not one element feels satisfying. It's good that the movie is ambitious enough to give each of its plotlines room to develop, but in the end nothing bears fruit in a movie that is overlong.

The acting is generally fine, at least as much as could be with the poor writing. None of the characters have much depth, so each scene relies heavily on plot to move it forward rather than any human elements that engage the audience. The only exception is Michael B. Jordan, who seemed to really get into his character's head. Unfortunately his villain makes some pretty outlandish leaps in logic by the end and it's hard to sympathize with him. The two other standouts were Letitia Wright as Shuri and Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue. Both seem to be having a lot of fun with their respective roles and light up the screen when they're on it. Chadwick Boseman, unfortunately, falls short of being charismatic, rarely stepping beyond "noble hero" territory.

Black Panther isn't the worst movie ever made, not even the worst MCU movie out there. But considering how much the MCU has matured in 10 years, it is surprisingly devoid of nuance and originality. I hope future entries in this character's story find their footing and boldness since the potential is clearly there both in the source material and the assembled cast present here.

It was a decent movie. I liked it, but the messaging was annoying.

T'Challa and pretty much all of the Wakandan's were great.

Loved the music, loved the costuming, loved the African lore, art direction, fight choreography, CGI, and most of the acting.

The story was ok, but I didn't like the tie-ins to America. They should have kept it local, in the surrounding countries, where there's real tyranny that needs addressing, even now.

Klaue was a pretty cool antagonist. His character received much more development than the main antagonist, Killmonger... which makes little sense.

Jordan did a fine job, playing the role he was dealt, but I couldn't stand the self-entitled ****

I did appreciate that they kept it more serious in tone. Hate forced humor.

Black Panther was a bit of a disappointment after a lot of flawless MCU movies.

The acting, the photography and the underlying story were fabulous.

Where the film fell down was in pacing and the writing - most characters lacked complexity and emotional depth. Oddly enough, the only characters who came across as comparatively interesting were the villains or unsympathetic ones, the cast of the good guys came across as just a bit too one dimensionally goodie two shoes.

The first half is ok, the second is not. Characters are very cool, but the pace of the movie is way too slow, thirty minutes too long at the least. Action scenes are few, and the center of the plot is a royal family feud. Not very superhero-esque.

Nothing special going on... A generic love story, one interesting and one boring villain, an apocalypse kind of story mixed with cringeworthy dialouge and bad CGI.

Now for the more controversial part; "The Black oppression myth" as I like to call it.

Hang on, I do know the history of slavery in the Americas, but it's not about that. Black Panther has a black superiority and victimhood complex. The characters of the movie joke around with words like "colonizer" and "white boy" (to make them look immature) frequently. They (the villains) aren't shy about talking of a global white genocide either.

Basically; this movie's plot is of a prince becoming king of a fantastical hidden african country with super strict border controls and tribal culture together with alien like technology...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here are some reasons why you should watch Black Panther:
1) The Cast - It is filled by some fantastic performers. It is a shame it is necessary to identify it as a people of color's representation come to fruition film to begin with when there was this much talent to deal with. I mean they have Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Sterling Brown, Letitia Wright (who got to answer one of the most empty questions I have ever heard in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rskukzUgAs), Daniel Kaluuya and even Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis, who despite being 'tolkien white guys' showed more caliber in the few minutes they had than most actors in MCEU if the same standards are concerned.
2) The Suit, The Power and The Metal - It is seriously some cool vfx work
3) You saw the trailer and you love the music 'Bagbak' by Vince Staples and you need to see the movie. I will spoil this for you, it is not in the movie and leads to the sensation that the trailer was way more enjoyable than the whole movie. That is not wholly true and if you really want to watch it, you should. And if you do watch it, write a review about it even if it is just for yourself. I have a feeling that it might be a watershed moment for your politico-personal reality.

BP is a bit like BP. It is all about moderation and it's message, mercifully does just that. Advocate rebuilding a better world instead of spreading hate on the basis of injustices that happened long past and will do us no good to punish ourselves and others over now.
Unfortunately, whole black cast and representation and women in power **** made it in the movie peripherals through the casting and what it meant to make this movie. Hearing people ask questions about race-based questions that won't affect the movies or the people in any good way is not healthy. Art is seriously not a democracy and people will not stop casting their favorites in movies, irrespective of this people of color induced messages and whatnot. If you want a story told and seen in your particular style, make it yourself and let the audiences judge it out with their views. This movie has done more to polarize its audiences, using the political climates of its targeted audiences as an impetus to publicize its popularity. While there is nothing legally or logically wrong with that, it does make me a bit sad since most superhero movies are archetypal stories that unify with a common goal.
It is not that this movie didn't try. Except it didn't stick because the character, T'Challa who gives this message of making the better choice has no way to reaching to you. Why does he believe that? Why should we believe him? Should we just root for him because he is the main character and he wears the Black Panther suit?! Probably, only because of Boseman's amazing voice and the Wakanda accent being used to say, "...I never freeze."

Michael B. Jordan's acting career definitely got a new lease of life because of Erik Killmonger(sure would have been nice to get some backdrop on how his past life with a surname like that) and his story. He speaks the truth about pain and suffering, both about the personal and the community life he's had but he also repeats a fundamentalist lie as he is biased and messed up and nobody (except in superhero lore) goes as far and as haphazardly as he does to get revenge. Weirdly, i found a parallel between Spider-man: Homecoming as I watched these two movies back to back. Tony Stark says, "If you are nothing without the suit, you shouldn't have it(the suit)." While Peter Parker rises above that assumption and comes home to the best suit of his lifetime, T'Challa seems far too much with the suit than without it, as he gets ass handed to him by Killmonger in the battle for the throne. Whether that in itself is too much of a burden to pull down the Franchise by itself is a question every viewer must decide by themselves. What the main character desperately needed was a more deeper look into his story and perhaps a bit more time to make as a big as he does. But nonetheless, I respect Boseman. He is 40 and still has worked for his first huge break (Let's be honest, even Denzel Washington only recently realized that the man he invested, monetarily but without return clauses, in has hit big).

I am somewhat happy that Black Panther exists. I have some small bits of its comic representation and creativity involved in the art of things that vibrantium is associated with is beautiful and this movie brings that to the visual medium. I am grateful for that and for the Wakanda accents, which is so much fun to listen and to speak, it is rough and welcoming. BP is flawed and over-simplistic story given too much credit but maybe the world has been starving for this for too long. You have to watch it to make your mind.

This review contains spoilers*********

We are introduced to the technologic and advanced civilization of Wakanda very early on. Then we are introduced to it again when Everet Ross enters Wakanda. Why not start with that instead of doing it twice? Wakanda is the most technologically advanced society of the world and it is wasted when we first experience it. We as the audience should see Wakanda as a outsider like Everet Ross. 99% of the world views Wakanda as a 3rd world country. Why not take advantage of that throughout the first half of the movie? As a alternative to viewing it in Everet Ross's perspective, we could also experience it the same way as Killmonger arrives. Michael B Jordan arrives as Killmonger in Wakanda halfway through the movie thinking that no one will allow him entry unless he's does some grand deed, yet no one seems to know who he is. None of this is relevant. Again, we should experience the wonder of Wakanda through one of two people who have never experienced it.

With that being said, several of the characters stand out. Winston Duke is one of the best characters of Black Panther as well as the MCU. I love him in the beginning, and I love him when he decides to help out in the final battle. Letitia Wright is also a stand out. She is fun, and never takes anything too seriously, yet plays an important part in the finale. Now for the bad part. Lupita Nyong'o and Angela Basset never get any time to shine until it is too late. Both are fine actresses, yet they don't add anything to the plot. Forest Whitaker is absolutely great (especially in street kings), but any depth that is given to him is ended quickly. I would have loved to see him more in the MCU.

With all that's been said I would love to experience Wakanda as a outsider and not just be thrust into the plot. As for Marvel, Black Panther is just average, but it could have been so much more. It is bogged down with too many villains, as well as too many protagonists. In the final battle, It is hard to root for anyone. Maybe that is the point.

TheCGI is poorly blended and it sticks out like a sore thumb when the cast is clearly standing on the green screen during several scenes throughout the film. The plot is pretty basic as well and does nothing to be even slightly original. The cast is rather so-so as well. I enjoyed Boseman and Jordan as the leads, Freeman and Serkis played wonderful supporting parts but everyone else seemed kind of awkwardly out of place and it didn't really click well on-screen. There was no real chemistry and it shows. The action scenes were probably the only real enjoyment this film had to offer and even those were kind of boring at times and again, The CGI painfully out of place.

Honestly, This has to be one of the most overrated films in recent years. I think the fact that it's the first black superhero film to come out during the superhero film kick (not ignoring Blade) really overhyped it. And the user reviews show that IMO. You don't have a near 2 overall score drop out of over 2000 reviews if that wasn't the case. It's an alright movie worth renting but not worth owning because there honestly isn't one real stand out thing about it, Aside from the superhero being black.

Anyways. The movie is fine. Its only probably the most boring one in the entire MCU (not the worst).

Between:
1) fanboys that would love a black screen with the Marvel logo
2) critics that would love any movie with this type of cast
3) critics paid (not literally) by Disney
4) people that laugh at "what are thooooose" type of jokes

this movie was going to be overrated.

The villain COULDve been great. It wasn't. It just was better than the average Marvel villain. I get why. He had a point, so by making it a psycho (kills anybody that gets in the way and cant form any kind of relationship because he's broken and all he has is hate blablal) makes it easier to relativize the revolution ideas.

The hero could've been great. He couldve been this guy which needed tons of help to lead his people, but at least he was strong.
NOPE. He's weak and without the help of his little sister he would be dead. GREAT!

And then the scenes in the ethereal world. MY GOD. What a boring waste of time (except the last scene, which should've been the only one there).

Other than that, typical funny movie!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disney did a good job marketing this movie to put emotion into it. The irony in Black Panther is that it is a film about exploiting the resources of Africa, without actually going to Africa and using Disney money to stimulate any economy there. Africa is a beautiful continent, and would have been an amazing backdrop. Unfortunately, Black Panther's backdrop is a green screen. Some gadgetry did not make any sense as anything conveyed by hologram could have equally been a text message, the "sneakers" never seemed to work, and it only takes a joystick to fly a plane?

The plot? Much like Hamlet, if the King and Denmark won. Black Panther becomes the worst king of Wakanda, loses his throne to a viable competitor. His family are sore losers, and lead a revolution to stop the king from sharing the secret of Wakanda. Once they win, they then share the secrets of Wakanda...

The lesson Disney is conveying is to not battle the powers to be, because they have better weapons.

Overall, only see Marvel if there's multiple heroes in it. Only see DC if there's one.

The fact that this is up for best picture is an absolute shame and warrants an apology from the academy. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Slightly less than average Marvel movie. Same simple plot that is full of holes, canned acting, and good CGI. The action in this movie is so bipolar, going from throwing people into cars, to killing them on the freeway, a battle of submission, to slitting someone's throat and stabbing. Only for the little bit of blood being when everyone is out of suits making everything ridiculous and telling that this was intended for kids, but not written for them.
This is by far the least heroic hero Marvel has shown yet with T'challa killing people left and right with no concern or worry. The implications of Wakanda being effectively a tyrannical dictatorship that may have a happy populace (it's not possible to tell since we only really see the royals) is also kind of frightening. It will never come to that in-story, but the implications and people thinking of it being better is worrisome.
The music was okay. The set and costume design was bipolar going from amazing to silly and over the top just to be different. The inspiration it took from various African cultures was fantastic, but then there were times they threw it all together willy nilly. Things with intent and meaning now just meant African.

It's very clearly not the best Marvel film as American critics would have you believe. Expand

The characters are shallower than anything else, and they have made such an attempt to progress the antagonists so forcefully as to be unpalatable. Especially speaking of "Killmonger", just another cliche villain we're already used to Marvel movies. One of the film's biggest sins is the attempt at such a forced insertion of social struggle, which the movie simply throws in the viewer's face that does not work well on such a reasonable plot. The soundtrack is relatively good (having specifically matched my musical taste and my view by marrying well with each moment.) CGI within average. A good movie, nothing more than that. Expand

It was overrated lots but had some cool things in it but I think political agendas seems to be more important to critics than the quality of a film.

No idea why this is being hailed as something special, acting is okay but plot and script are not good at all.

The idea was interesting as was what the film was hyped up to be, the trailer looked great and the high ratings and critical acclaim promised even more.

My thoughts were that 'Black Panther' was a decent and intriguing film with a lot of very well done to great elements, but it didn't blow me away and left me disappointed after the hype. As indicated, far from hated it, didn't love it. Actually saw 'Black Panther' on opening weekend in a sold out showing (it was touch and go as to whether a ticket could be gotten), but had to properly form my thoughts for a while and was nervous seeing the very divisive IMDb reaction and the condescension on both sides (mostly negative), which has slightly died down since to feel less nervous.

Starting with the good/great things, 'Black Panther' is mostly impressive visually. The special effects were variable, but there were some spectacular ones, while it's beautifully and stylishly shot, slickly edited and sumptuously costumed. It's the extraordinary production design that was most note-worthy. Loved the use of technology, which was really cool. The music has the right amount of haunting intensity, energy, dignity and pathos, so a fine score on its own but not always utilised right in the film, a few ill-fitting moments mood-wise.

Much of the action is exciting, though there could have been more, and there is a good deal of thought-provoking script-writing with some nicely injected humour. One is immersed in the world of Wakanda, which is a fascinating world in thematic terms. The story does grip once it gets going and doesn't feel as confused and jumpy, with timeline and location changes needing to be clearer, like it did to begin with and a lot of it even when turning our everyday struggles on their heads is surprisingly relevant.

Personally thought that much of the acting was good, with a very charismatic lead performance from Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan bringing a self-loathing conflicted edge and swagger to Killmonger and Andy Serkis relishing his role with aplomb. The women are just as good, with a dignified Lupita Nyong'o, regal, no-nonsense and feisty Danai Gurira and particularly a funny and endearing Letitia Wright. While his role is small, Daniel Kaluuya is great fun in it. Direction is above competent, if not innovative, and really appreciated the film making Killmonger more than the standard Marvel villain, here one with questionable personal motives but one where one can see his point of view and empathise. Although his actions are inconsistent and don't always make sense and he could have been more threatening, generally he is one of the better Marvel villains and the most developed character in a film too full of stock ones (the titular character being the other exception).

'Black Panther' has faults however. Most of the characters are stock and clichéd, while some of the first half is too talky, the film is a little slow-going and confused to start with and some of the political elements are laid on too thick. Adding to the general feel that, even with the splashes of humour, the film takes itself too seriously and with the amount of predictability it has doesn't do enough new with a novel concept.

There are exceptions to the cast. Forrest Whittaker is wasted as a non-developed character with too short screen time, on top of the scene being rushed his final scene has no impact as a result. Martin Freeman is too fish out of water as well.

Although some of the effects are spectacular, others are very ropy. Especially in the final action scene between Black Panther and Killmonger which resembled a very early days/years video game. That scene also felt rushed, sometimes vaguely choreographed and anti-climactic, though the whole climax felt over-stuffed and too busy.

Overall, decent and interesting but was expecting more. Personally don't think it's the best Marvel film, while a long way from bad let alone terrible, for me it's one of the weaker ones. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Lots of great elements and performances (all of the female leads are outstanding), but they're all suffocated under the standard-issue Marvel endless blurry action and needless bombast.
I'd say it was a huge disappointment, but I really wasn't interested in the movie until the so-called critics did their weird-ass gushing thing. Speaking of critics -- the f**k is wrong with all of you? Seriously. Do your jobs or quit. Right now, you're all just professional turd-polishers for a multinational corporate behemoth.

I don’t get the hype. It was basically the same Marvel plot and characters except they’re African. It’s cool to see some different culture for a change but the story is fairly derivative.

Black Panther

Coogler's incense stick burns slow but has an enchanting fragrance that teases our speculations with thought provoking familiar themes. With Ryan Coogler, the director, on the realm, he has a politically correct film as the crown, it may not age well, but it definitely is the headline of the today's newspaper. The up rise in the rich culture that it sparks is unfortunately a double edged sword, as much as it is essential to shine the light on the other side of the door, it also is necessary to be nuanced in that very speech, unfortunately at a certain point it grows loud- the forced humor is probably the dullest of the franchise- and undermines the quality. Chadwick Boseman as the king, never feels like the "king".

He may have all the James Bond-alike gadgets but his body language isn't flamboyant as his competitor Michael Jordan. But then, to be honest, it is Jordan's film from the start. With a ferocious provocative performance his leadership has much more jarring impact than Boseman could ever cast. And Jordan single-handedly carves this film like his appealing figure, the film grows three dimensional when his opinions come alive, only because every other character is given a baggage, except for him, and then he too is cooked with those same ingredients.

This middle act is where the film wins all the credit and as much as gritty this very act is, the last act shucks that earned respect as it gets reduced to a fist fight in the end- the commercial aspect once again anchors the flight of another bohemian chapter of the MCU. Coogler offers enough to ponder about and enough to exhale for, the gold that it digs for, comes with a price that as an audience we are paying for unknowingly, it is not manipulative but an inadequacy to cut deep, for the time the myth, the king, the Black Panther is their reliable protector.

Giving this movie an almost perfect score is absolute non-sense. Chadwick Boseman is a fantastic actor and I liked his portrayal of Black Panther in the other Marvel movies (Civil War and Infinity War) but his role in his own movie fell flat. Not because of his acting, but he wasn't given much from the writers. The coolest characters were the villains and side characters. The Dialogue was flat and the humor was pretty much non-existent. The action scenes were OK at times but fell short because of the bad CGI and lazy choreography. The last fight scene looked like something out of 2008. I own all the Blade movies on VHS and I was happy to see a new black super hero for a change. It just didn't do it justice and Black Panther deserves better. Overall, it wasn't terrible and I would rank it right in the middle of the rest of the Marvel movies out there so far. Expand
