Seriously now, anyone who's read a few books can tell clearly that the storytelling was cheesy and cliche: I literally guessed the entire scope of the plot with all the main "twists" after watching the first 20 minutes of the film. The dialogue was boring and uninventive, sticking straight to the formula. The effects were decent, but I found the 3D to be kind of weak and I think Cameron should have stuck to normal film. It's not a terrible movie, but don't expect to get your heart wrenched out by the story or be shocked by the conclusion - it's exactly what you expect. Expand

The effects were gorgeous. The story is absolute garbage. My advice: see it with some chemical enhancement and some pink floyd on your ipod. Its only way you will get past the ridiculous dialogue and painfully awful story.

That has never been the case with his other movies. Despite its eye popping visuals, Avatar fails because not enough time was invested in the story. The love story between Jake and a female inhabitant of Pandora never has any depth or feeling, nor does the rest of the movie which is stretched out to an excruciating 2 hours and 40 minutes, presumably so Cameron can show off as much of his groundbreaking visuals as possible. The story and the characters were not the greatest ever. But for everyone who thinks that James Cameron should have put in the extra work to come up with a sweeping and epic story that captures the film better than this one i would like to see them direct such a monumental film with technology that doesn't exist yet and still have time for. The fact is, the screenplay is realistic. As in what people would actually say if they were in that situation. People don't usually come up with stunning new lines in real life, they use old fashioned to the point ones and that is what he has done. Visually the film is incredible. Easily one of the best looking and most imaginative films ever. The world of Pandora is as life like as the world around us and I left my second viewing even more immersed than the first. All the characters perks and expressions, all the actions and the significance. All the scenery and stunning camera work (a third of a second was put into a close up but otherwise everything was pure gold) and some of the most sweeping distance shots ever make the planet seem completely real. Like Cameron took the six year flight there, filmed it and then flew six back to release it here. No it's not as good as Titanic, although the 3D is used better than any other film to date. In consensus it lacks the sheer drama and execution Titanic had. But like i said i sure couldn't do any better. Yeah a better and more original story would have been good but under the circumstances a person can't really complain. Go and see this movie. It is easily my favorite film of the year and one of the best i've ever seen. Expand

It presents a visually impressive and well thought out world, encapsulated in a familiar story about love and acceptance. The people who rated this so poorly seem to forget that there are only so many story arcs that exist in the world. Familiar storyline aside, the movie is a visual feast - especially in IMAX 3D. The transitions from "real life" to CGI are generally so seamless that the line disappears entirely. Not far off is the day when actors are simply used for initial modeling and voiceovers. Throw in state-of-the-art 3D animation and Avatar has changed the way we will watch movies. It has done for 3D and CGI what The Wizard of Oz did for color. Was the storyline predictable? Absolutely. But if you enjoy your movies as an escape from reality, this film will immerse you so much in another world that for 161 minutes your reality will cease and Cameron's will take over. I'd give it a 10 if it was just a little less predictable, but even that doesn't take away from this cinematic marvel. See it in 3D, and IMAX at that if you can. Expand

Basically, it is "Dances with Wolves" meets "Starship Troopers". The movie is really dumb and the only thing that differs it from other sci-fi movies with no plot and lots of CGI, is the quantity and quality of CGI (motion capture and what not). Yes, Pandora looks awesome and real at the same time, it feels like a breathing, living world. However, all this magic is pointless as everything else is just too obvious and one-dimensional. Pandora could easily be the Amazon jungle, the big bad corporation could use Caterpillars instead of their mechs and it would still be the same simplistic story. The CGI serve no purpose apart from adding the oooh factor. "Avatar" is nowhere near "King Kong" or "The Jurassic Park", as in those movies the special effects were justified - to a degree they are what MADE the plot. Oh, and the last thing. There's no point watching the movie in the so-called 3D. Perhaps in a digital Imax cinema it looks spectacular, but in a "regular" cinema, the 3D version looks same as the 2D, only darker (due to glasses). Expand

You cannot have a movie designed to be heavily moralistic where one can't even muster up sympathy of the protagonists! This is the worst part of the movie. The blue people are simply unlikable- stupid and arrogant. The fact that Cameron is playing theses people up as heavily superior doesn't help at all. Visual effects are nice and all - no denying that. But while effects alone can make for a nice short viewing experience, but not for a movie. The worst part of this is that inevitably, people disliking this movie will be labeled as anti-environmentalists, being scared of the film's heavy-handed message because it 'scares them' or 'hits too close to home'. Having a good message is not enough to make a good movie. Especially if delivered in such a bland way as Cameron does. He's a joke of a director, and 'Avatar' is terrible. I sincerely hope that it does not influence all movies to come, and that great cinema will not be dead. Expand

It must be seen! It must be seen in 3D, it was the wildest experience, yes it is predictable, but felt I with the characters, believed in the world, I felt with the world. Yes it is a nearly 3-hour action movie, but it is so well done in every aspect. I hope Michael Bay sees this movie and learn a little, this is how such a film must be put together, the effects, the entire design of the world, the characters (Michelle Rodriguez kicks ass! Main character was so unbelievably cool) I'm really impressed, and I really want to watch it again immediately! (will not happen, but I would like to) I will get this movie on Blu-ray the second it comes out, but I know it will not be nearly as impressive on my 42 "TV with no surround sound or any other "sound source" than my tv, and no 3D as well. Avatar, yes it gets 10/10, so well done, so amazing, a masterpiece! It's kinda sad to know, that it's going to be so long before I can experience this movie again, and when I can, it won't be the same, it won't be the same by far! I was hypnotized. Expand

The story Although this movie's visual effects are groundbreaking for its time, I felt that the story seemed to drag a bit. There are sequences in the film that are purposley inserted in order to wow audiences using special effects. The story could have took a different route and wowed audiences in that way, giving the audience a chance to connect with the characters more. Also, the dialogue became less entertaining as the film went on, especially for the Stephen Lang character. He says all of the trademark marine shoot 'em up phrases, that you eventually feel that the character would be so much more effective if he had better dialogue. Other than that, the film's visual effects are outstanding and will have a huge impact on the film industry in the years to follow as CG animation improves. Expand

More than I expected in terms of storyline and everything I expected in terms of state of the art CGI. It's a sad trend in society that maintains that a film worthy of acclaim must fundamentally "reinvent the wheel." To be sure, that is an awfully lofty expectation and not one I plan to adopt as I'm guessing that more joy can be extracted from life if one adopts more reasonable expectations. Sure the themes have been seen before, but no art avoids the themes of previous purveyors within the same genre. I'd rather spend my time watching and enjoying this movie thoroughly a few more times than complaining about its failure to entirely reinvent the genre. To each their own. Expand

This movie was so great, only a few things were missing, which stopped me from giving it a 10. First thing is that at parts the movie felt slow paced, most parts the pace was perfect but a few parts here and there the pace was a bit slow. Also, I came and watched this movie not just to enjoy myself but also get educated about the world that Cameroon has created, but I was disappointed that I did not learn anything about the world, everything was just shown to you, you were never told any fascinating information, like why is there such a big tree sticking out of the ground+why do many of the Navi tribes live in it (maybe it is just a really large tree and its a rare species and the navi prefer living in it because it offers protection, but nor all Navis live in it because they are rare trees and not ever tribe can find one, or the answer could be more complicated than that), why are those mountains floating, why have certain creatures adapted in certain ways, why are the Navis so similar to humans, etc. Another problem was that there were really 2 events in the whole movie, the main character learning the ways of Navi and a big battle. The battle took up about 15-20% of the movie, while learning took up over 65% of the movie, while another 15+% of the movie was taken up by other things. Every single part that felt slow paced was in the learning section, they could have cut this down to a little over half of what it actually was and it would have made the movies pace perfect and they could have spent the extra time to explain the movie. Now there are few movies out there that can explain a whole universe in a single movie, a few examples are Lord of the Rings and Matrix (even though these 2 movies explained a lot of the universe in sequels most of it was explained in the original movie). I expected Cameroon to be able to do this since he is such a great director and the movie was so damn long but I was disappointed. But I am sure that the sequel (already in the talks) will explain the universe in detail to us which will make the first movie even more enjoyable to think about and watch. Thanks for reading. Expand
