While aspects of The Real Value of James Cameron's "Avatar" All the reviews of Avatar Ive read seem to miss the real value of this visually stunning movie set on the fantastically alive planet of Pandora. While aspects of the plot are predictable, Avatar offers some powerful messages for our time once you scratch beneath the surface. For those who are not firmly entrenched in our mainstream cultures cynicism and denial the movie, Avatar, is a powerful opportunity to sharply see and feel our current situation as a species that has lost its way. As we experience the lives of Pandoras indigenous people our own predicament comes into contrast. We become visible as a species that has become trapped within its own culture and system of domination and control... cut off from what really enlivens us. It is surprising that a movie with some of the messages of Avatar could even come out of the corporate dominated homelandExpand

Cameron's imagination has to be seen to be believed. To all those who are mad that this might be an allegory to how evil white people are or how we have to save Mother Earth or how the Na'vi are synonymous with the Iraqis or Afghanis -- well, all I can say is that you're just reading way too much into it. I'm white and very conservative in my political beliefs, but I can separate that from what is meant to be a fantasy alien world entertainment experience. Almost gave it a 10 but the storyline is a little weak in places and it didn't have to be. But still, easily the best movie of the year if not the past several. Expand

Excellent special effects spoiled by a recycled storyline and even worse script. Very predictable, another American/human who saves the entire planet and indigenous people. Full of cheesy unoriginal cliches.

Don't beleive those who gave it the low scores. It was very very well made. This is the kind of movie that was so well put together that it had the ability to make you feel like you were actually on another world for 2.5 hours. I applaud the creators and all who put this film together as it is a masterpiece of cinema. Yes, there are some cliches that can be traced back to stuff done in other films, but seriously - what "hasn't" been done before ? Yes, there was the age old cowboys/indians type of conflict - but it is still relevant and definitely part of our human nature - so it is absolutely valid as a plot. And, some on here said the acting was terrible, and that there was no character development - I can't understand those comments - as this film had just the right blend of development that was needed to tell the story. One last comment - Zoe Saldana is hot as Uhura and also as a NaVi - I'd do them both. Expand

The trailers made me feel skeptical, as I just thought "this has all been done before". But I was wrong. It was far better than I expected, I'd even say that this is as good as my favourite James Cameron movie - Terminator 2. James Cameron sure does know how to tell a story, albeit quite a simple one. It has a lot of heart. The less I spoil the better. There wasn't a single boring moment in the movie. The best use of CG I've ever seen (I usually prefer things to be real rather than computer generated, but this is an exception). Also, the 3-D effects are breathtaking, really immerses you into the imaginative world he created. The action scenes thrilled me, one in particular actually made me quite emotional (and if any movie has such a powerful effect on you, you know it's good). I didn't want it to end, despite the long run-time. It's paced so well, with good plot twists and fascinating characters. This movie blew me away, and I might even call it the best movie this decade. It certainly gets in my top 5 favourites of all time. Expand

Visually the movie looks great and the world of Pandora is gorgeous. Unfortunately, since I wasn't watching it in 3d I wasn't as sucked into the world of Avatar as I would've otherwise. As far as plot goes the movie does a nice job. The characters and setting are great and the one guy having two identities keeps things interesting as he struggles to find out who he really is. Also, the story in Avatar Humans vs. Navi is different but at the same time very familiar, which I like. My one criticism is where the movie ends. (SPOILIERS ALERT) I really don't like how the Navi defeat the humans because it feels almost forced in there. A more appropriate ending would be when the Navi set off to fight the humans. As a result, of adding on the climactic battle, the movie was too long for my tastes and started to drag. Avatar is the one movie that everyone should see particulary in 3d. You will be amased at the amount of detail in Pandora and find the plot to be very interesting. If you are a parent, bring your kids because to some extent, Avatar will provide them the same joy that a Star Wars movie would. Expand

The story of Avatar itself isn't all that much to jump up and down about. The film is, however, the prettiest thing you've ever seen in a movie theater. I saw the 3D version of this film, and I can say it's worth it for the 3D version. Too many 3D films destroy their believability by making things "jump" out of the screen at you -- "WOW it's 3D!". This film does not do that. 3D is used as a tool to make the action more real -- not less. Expect incredible visuals -- but don't expect much on story from Avatar. Expand

This movie is ridiculously good. You get immediately sucked in with the visuals (especially so in 3D) and stay locked in for the story, character development, and action of the movie. Highly recommended.

I say this because all who are extolling this movie as a 10 seem to only talk about the great visuals (especially in IMAX 3D) What they don't talk about is the story. It is telling. The movie was OK at best. I am sad to say that I saw it first in 2d and then in IMAX 3d just to see if it was that much better. It was not. I preferred it in 2D. Maybe because It was new then or maybe because I could actually focus on what I wanted to. I admit I am no fan of the new 3D gimmick... Long review short. There were a few interesting concepts, like a consciousness arising out of a network comparable to the human brain, (albeit of trees), coevolution creating a world full of closely interacting species, with a physical link instead of behavioral mostly, and the idea that love may be dependent not on species so much as comparable mental capacity once bodies are a thing of the past or almost so. Sadly none of these were developed and the last I think wasn't even thought of by the film-maker. It was pretty but it was hollow. Trust the reviews not the numbers pasted on them. The 10s were wowed by pretty lights the 5s and lower were disappointed by the lack of any interesting story, political preaching or sci-fi made for people who don't like sci-fi. Expand

The plot Built to be very similar to Pocahontas, basically a big social commentary about genocide and how stupid our militaries are. If a world such as this was found it would certainly be beaten, eaten, and exploited as in the movie. The plot isn't hackneyed, but it isn't very creative, leaving plenty of room for predictability, so it's hard to like when compared to Cameron's unpredictable masterpiece Titanic *applause sign*. Where the film actually falters is the bad guy. If every character who contains interest in killing the indigenous people was to have a MySpace/Facebook profile, it would contain a brief generic history written by some staff member along with an inspirational quote something along the lines of, "'Kill everything in your way in order to achieve fiscal benefit.' ~Adolf Hitler." Also, that quote is made up but I wouldn't put it past him. Expand
