Best movie theater experience I've ever had. I thought nothing would ever top seeing the Matrix and Jurassic Park but I was wrong. This in 3D blew them both away. 5 well deserved stars.

I'm generally pretty critical of CGI but this movie felt real to me. And the complaints I've heard of clumsy storytelling and bad dialog were unfounded. Cameron's storytelling was flawless. So economical I didn't want it to end. There's a minimalism to some of the acting and script that I think balances out the sensory overload of the visuals. Perfect movie. Worth way more than the price of admission. Expand

This movie was awesome. I love this movie but something is a little familiar.. Anyone ever see Dances with Wolves? Avatar is the exact same movie with a sci-fi twist and technology upgrades. I'm telling you, the exact same movie.

In fact, I found myself wondering (and checking) to see if Cameron had a hand in making that 1990s animation. It wasn't perfect, but I felt the characters were believable and compelling. And for those who get hung up on the Vatican's recommendations to not watch it because the people of Pandora worshiped nature, well, just remember that even in the old testament, humans are told to take care of the earth -- maybe not worship it -- but certainly take care of it. Above all -- groups (and you know who you are) need to remember -- it is fiction! Meant for entertainment! Take it at that. Expand

This hurts. Not ever did I want to say anything negative about a James Cameron film, but that's where this is going. I want to start off by saying that I did not find the effects as everyone else, maybe it's because CGI with detail This hurts. Not ever did I want to say anything negative about a James Cameron film, but that's where this is going. I want to start off by saying that I did not find the effects as everyone else, maybe it's because CGI with detail and human emotion isn't such a big deal anymore. I mean we all knew it was heading this way, but this is not CGI without humans, this was mo-cap and its obvious and it should be mo-cap to achieve the Uncanny Valley. All in all we all play video games now and this was not that impressive in a world filled with CGI. Enough about the effects however, the 3D was very well done in the use of depth and being tolerable for two and a half hours, although nothing mind blowing like debris flying at you. Movie theaters still have not achieved the theme park 3D that everyone really wants to see. Now this is where the biggest knock comes and I realize that people are suckers for a good love story, but do you remember Fern Gully? Yup the animated Fox film in the '90's about the rainforrest and fairies, now imagine the fairies being 12 foot blue Native Americans and Sam Worthington is the shrunken guy that realizes that teraing doen the rainforrest is bad. Hmm....ok lets take that story and add millions more dollars to it and make it a sci-fi opus (which it isn't) and tell everyone that they've never seen anything like this. I have and I want my money back. Expand

There is no charecter that retains any sympathy at the end of the movie. The Na'vi could have been deaf and dumb and the story would have moved along at the exact same pace. The dialogue continually detracted from the Pandora "experience". And the story was so tired and cliched, they must have been watching The Wizard of Oz, Dances WIth Wolves and some generic war movie simultaniously while banging on their keyboards like monkeys. The movie Avatar is basically an overly long, expensive B-movie. The plot is not just simplistic and cliche, but lazy even... apparently audiences won't realize it's mean to bomb the holy tree unless a "daisy cutter" is involved. The movie is littered with cheap references like that, presumably to curry favor with left-wing critics who otherwise would admit the story is awful. So far as the special effects: it really should not enhance the rating in my view because they are only impressive in comparison to today's standards. In 10 years, Avatar won't look like anything special, and the movie will gradually fade into obscurity. Expand

Visuals make up for missing story, but engaged me only for about 1/2 movie. Then i got bored and little logical errors ruined reality feeling of the movie - e.g. there exists no real communication link between human and avatar - they are connected by magic in otherwise technoworld, why someone makes giant earthmoving machine with cameras that can be taken off with a rock, why early 21st century technology in a distant future, and so on. Last 20 minutes of fighting, killing and dying got me engaged again. Luckily we do not need to kill anybody for real in Colloseum these days - computer graphics are good enough, but basic joy of seeing bad guy killed are ageless. There are two new 'props' i have not yet seen in the movie - universal man-animal interface the natives use to connect with various living things and biological network storage where navi's upload their deceased for eternal storage :) Unfortunately what these things could mean for humanity does concern Cameron not. These are props to make scene. This is not the movie i will keep at home and watch again. Expand

I already watched avatar. My parents I'm only 18 years old but film is what I want to do for living. I believe in my passion and determination plus my talent. Now all this comes to single message: NEVER TRY TO PREDICT SOMETHING. I already watched avatar. My parents doesn't know English and I love watching films BUT with them to see their reaction. I cried a lot in the film, not because it is REALLY sad but because it is almost perfectly done, saying this with my own knowledge of film. It involves the human spirit to a completely new level, where nature and human heart becomes so much important than the impressive special and visual effects. I've never watched a film like these, nobody has. Its another way of looking at movies, a new era. I'm writing an extended essay on how the ACADEMY AWARDS have shaped the film industry, its narrative, cinema language and the genres. Perhaps after watching Cameron's film my conclusion has changed, and Slumdog Millionaire is maybe not the next pattern at the Oscars. That extreme reality and human suffering: We don't believe in such way of looking at cinema, which I love and which is the reason why I'm going to watch UP IN THE AIR. I don't know if Avatar should, or will win the BEST PICTURE Oscar, but I know is one of the best films i've seen and if I could say, I can guarantee its spot in the Oscars top ten of this year. I want Avatar to win, I want this work to be recognized and be published in every newspaper in the world, because Avatar is a movie to remember and maybe a new pattern instead of Slumdog, who knows. You know, I said before in 2004 or 2005 I don't remember the exact date, but I said coming out of a theater with my mum: 'Mum, this movie will win the Oscar for best picture'. I came out from seeing Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. My dad didn't believe me, and it took the award. This time I'm saying: I wish Avatar COULD win the best picture award. Expand

The 3 is a result of the amazingly breathtaking computer generation and animation. The 3d was not very well utilized...most of the time it did not seem like it was in 3d, and could be watched without glasses. Only one part really seemed like 3d, when the sully cripple guy threw the grenade in the aircraft engine, and it bounced by your face. This was the second longest movie i've ever been to, and the most drawn out. the first 2 hours are soooooo boring i almost fell asleep, if it were not for the bright flashy bioluminescence of the plants i probably would have. These first hours were like watching the animal planet or discovery channel, just sit back and look at a bunch of plants. however, every once and a while, there is a cool plant that catches your attention. the cat na'vi people are very strange, and distracted from the movie. everything else was so different and fairy tale like, then they use blue human people with tails, and cat ears. so unoriginal!!!! there are tons of blue alien races. onto the plot: reminded me of one of those movies on the sci fi channel, your macho army commander gone mad with power, an unethical greedy ceo behind it all, nerdy scientists that try to stop army guy and a marine that wants to save the day. the dialogue was horrendous, i could predict every word that was going to come out of their mouthes...and the dry humor was terrible, the retarded kid in the theater that laughed at the jokes and come-backs did not help either. the plot can be guessed when sully teams up with army commander guy (see how bad this is? i saw the movie today and dont even know their names...) to gather info on the cat people. i will not reveal any spoilers, but the plot was very stereotypical. the last 30 minutes, the epic battle scene, was the best part and saving grace of the movie. i dont think the 2 hours of plants was worth 30 mins of action though. in conclusion this review was not meant to discourage you from seeing it, by all means go see it for the animation and try to help james cameron make some of his investment back, but buy a large tub of popcorn and drink, you will need it and may find it more interesting than the movie. Sorry Hollywood, but I am older than twelve and am not impressed by such bad filmmaking The major reason I dislike 3D movies and avoid them is that directors think that the audience needs to have stuff thrust out of the screen at them. Sorry Hollywood, but I am older than twelve and am not impressed by such bad filmmaking technique. The intent of a film should be to entice the viewer to believe in the characters, the story and the world presented on the screen; to be drawn into images and imagination you have created so that we, the audience, believe it. No 3D movie has yet accomplished this ... until now. James Cameron's Avatar is 3D done right. It draws the viewer into the forest world of Pandora making it utterly believable. The few 'thrust something into my face moments' are appropriate and not intrusive. If this is the future of 3D film-making then I can see that it truly has a future. Aside from the 3D, the film also stands out as a well constructed story and superb world building. The film borrows elements from historical and SF sources including James Cameron's own 'Aliens' movie, the SF sub-genre of alien culture stories exemplified by authors such as C. J. Cherryh, and the film 'Dances With Wolves'. James Cameron has once again raised the bar for future filmmakers. We shall see the results over the next few years. This film is possibly the best film of the decade and it won't easily be topped. Expand

The first reason is that it does not take away from the movie at all; at no point did I say to myself "Oh man, this is like Pocahontas [or Fern Gully or whatever]" and hence anticipated similar events. Yeah, alright, it did have elements of many different films but give James Cameron a break! The guy made a movie with absolutely phenomenal special effects (I saw it in IMAX 3D) and with a storyline which, albeit comprised of many well known movies, comes together to form a spectacle that captures the audience's attention in a way that makes you say, "Wow, what I would give to experience this world if only for a second." Furthermore, has no one thought that maybe the storyline was familiar so as not to take away from the other aspects of the movie? Plus, the familiar is a film technique used by directors so the audience feels more involved in the film. And in my opinion, James Cameron did just that. Expand

Avatar First of all I would like to say that I have never reviewed a movie on here before but am sick and tired of people thinking that a movie rating is based on how much you can insult a movie or how clever you can make yourself sound. Avatar itself is the first movie that I have ever seen that totally dragged me in. No the story wasnt anything brand new but it certainly is not boring or old. The graphics were groundbreaking and quite often breathtaking but that wasnt overshadowed by a rubbish story. The characters sometimes seemed a little typical but a fantastic performance by Sigourny Weaver at least added one major lead acting role. All in all the movie is well worth watching if you go into this movie expecting too much then thats your fault. The dumb people win out by sheer masses and will flood this area with comments like "fantastic" "amazing" etc... These are dumb people after all. They cannot possibly give good advice on films (or much else) because they haven't the werewithal to do so. Thus I encourage anyone who considers themselves to be intelligent (the type that would NEVER see a Micheal Bay picture) to read only the reviews that are under 5 stars. I give 3 because I'm a little generous and because I thought some of the action was okay. Avatar is a really big, bright, colorful, noisy and dumb movie. It is 3 parts Dances With Wolves, mixed with 2 parts Pocohontas and add a generous splash of every cliche action film out there. As a picture - it stinks (the script and dialogue could only have been written by a 4th grader). As a 3d spectacle? Yawwwwnnn.... Hardly revolutionary. After 10 minutes you'll barely notice. Anyway, if you're dumb (chances are - yes) you'll probably love it enough to post your idiotic- 1/4 baked ideas up on websites like this. Expand

Yeah its has similar story lines to "Dances with Wolves" and "Pocahontas" but its different at the same time. The Na'vi are humanoid in appearance but not human as in "Dances with Wolves" and "Pocahontas" which makes it different in that fact. It's a instant classic! I have seen this movie six times in theaters. Five of which are in IMAX 3D. I notice details that I regularly see other directors miss. *spoiler alert* The part in the main battle scene when Jake and the other Na'vi are trying to bring down the shuttle loaded with bombs. Jake fly's in on his Great Leonopteryx and then jumps off on top of the shuttle at which point he kills some RDA troops manning some machines guns. The scene just before he jumps of his mount onto the ship you can see a Banshee (Flying creature) that got shot, on top of the ship twitching and as it cuts scenes on where Jake jumps off his mount and onto the shuttle you can still see the Banshee twitching and then as Jake jumps over the fortifications where the marines are defending the ship with machine guns and shoots them (marines) you can see the Banshee again still twitching on top of the shuttle. Now I have seen many more details like this in the movie and it excites me to see. You have a director that is willing to pay attention to every detail such as the one I mentioned and a detail that hardly no one if anyone will notice. When I see movies I like to look at these very details to see how much time the spent into making their film look as real as possible and James Cameron did not disappoint! I mean if you are paying attention to details that small then you know the huge details that the director want you to see is going to be even better! This movie delivered everything I expect to see from a movie and then some. James Cameron in an amazing derictor, producer and writer! This Movie is a 10 for sure! Expand

I will show my age and go one further and dredge up "A Man called Horse". All run a similar theme in that the white man goes native. So what? The story has been told before; so have many others. What is important here is how the story was told and in my humble opinion, it was nothing less than brilliant. The characters were believable and lifelike (Yes, it is pleasing to see a real actor that doesn't act woodenly) The CG was almost seamless and I had to look hard to find the defects. The 3d was an enhancement to the visuals rather than a gimick and the story compelling , even if a retelling of an old theme. The art is not just in the story, but how it is told. Give me an old story well told over a new story badly told any day. All I can say is release the Blu-Ray version in 3D, this is one of the few "keepers" going into my collection. Expand

When I go and watch a film in a theatre, I love the feeling of being immersed...this takes immersion to a whole new level, not just becuase of the 3d, but the ambition and scale is simply astonishing. People have critised the story a little, and I guess in essence it takes a rather worn path. Look at what he has achived though, taking people somewhere utterly alien and beautiful, almost unimaginably so, built a compelling love story that truly works, and pleased the kick-ass action fans a hundred times over. I would have given it a higher rating but the story was really weak, and it was a bit too heavy on the tree-hugging aspect (Capitalism, man, & the military are evil and nature and the environment are to be untouched). I'm sure all the climate-change (formally global warming) nuts will give this movie a 10, and thats ok, It's visuals and action alone did not merit a 10 for me. There was never any explanation why the material in "Pandora" was so important to the military other than it was worth alot of money so the core of the story was never explained. The action and visuals were great, I really liked all of the action sequence's, stunning special effects, and creativity of the "Pandora" world. The movie was a bit long and the plot as I mentioned was pretty lame, it had alot of similarity to something like Bravehart. I saw the movie in 3D and it was good, however, after the first 30 minutes I did not even notice the 3D anymore so I would imagine that it would be just as good without the 3D. I would reccomend this movie for the visuals and action, if you are an anti-capiltalist or environmentalist you will absolutely love this movie for its tree-hugging message! Expand

This movie will remain in my memory for a long time. (The fact that I wouldn't mind watching this on a regular basis would help keep it fresh in my memory). I have seen this movie twice, the first time being in 2D. I traveled 45 minutes in bad snow to see it in 3D, but was ultimately disappointed. Not due to the movie but the fact that the 3D did not enhance the movie as much as I would have liked. This could be because I didn't drive the extra miles to an IMAX theater. I really don't think that 3D is needed to express the new world that Cameron creates. Even in 2D, I was amazed by the new scenery and visual artistry that was presented. I thought that all actors/actresses in the movie offered solid performances. However, at times Sam Worthington (Jake Sully) was a little hard to understand in his dialogue. As for plot, the movie gives everyone something to enjoy and follow along with. The plot is well developed and even gives the action junkies something to look at with the final battle scene. Even I was enthralled with the elements of romance that were presented. As I put it to a friend, "There is a great plot, great action, and a sprinkling of romance." In conclusion, I feel that it would be likened to a felony to not see this movie. James Cameron creates a beautiful new world as well as a beautiful well-developed plot.
