Most importantly, the 3D effects weren't overdone and gimmicky. The 3D is mostly to provide depth rather than have things come out at you, and this provided a new dimension to seeing a movie. It's funny how the few people who rate this negatively mostly complain about the moral message, that's against the military, or against capitalism. One person even rated it a zero despite admittedly not even having seen the movie! Clearly, the moral message of movies does get through to even the most closed-minded people out there... This movie is outstanding, and I didn't want it to end! It was so immersive and emotional... James Cameron is back!!! Expand

Well Yes (a bit) but has the habitat ever looked this good and have the characters been so well drawn & emote so realistically (Its easy forget they are CG ). And the fact that it works well on many levels: as a love story, action movie and as the best episode of "Lost Tribes" they never made . I don't like to be entertained cheaply (usually no art house flicks for me) and money & quality oozes out of this film. It is a testament to James Cameron's ability as one of the worlds premier film-makers. Loved it Expand

The CGI is a new benchmark in cinema history, and although at times the Na'vi don't quite look real, it's a hell of a lot closer than anyone has ever come before. The 3D is expertly judged and deployed; none of that crap like spears pointing in your face every two seconds, but proper effects which are only used when needed. The plot is slightly overused, but to be fair Cameron wrote this fourteen years back when it still would have been original. So don't judge him on that. Still the undisputed King of the World. Expand

Regarding the plot, nobody else has used this term, so let me now say that this is an anti-imperialist film. A rapacious Terran culture visits an ecologically diverse and cooperative foreign world on an exploitative mission, and there is a conflict of cultures in which the film clearly takes the side of the natives. That is not a cliche because mainstream films have usually come down on the side of the people with the guns, and even when they have not they have usually failed to project a positive image of cooperatively based matriarchal societies. Yes, everything is writ large rather than subtly, but look at the rest of these comments and you can see why; not a very subtle bunch, we moviegoers, are we? Expand

For any person living in the eastern part of the United States, taking that long trek to the local movie theater probably was the last thing on your mind, while the thoughts of hot chocolate, and watching the snow was a higher priority. Yet even with the weather arduously not helping, Avatar starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, still flashed onto to silver screen with something to prove. For anyone walking into this movie without any prior knowledge other than primetime trailers, they will be dazed and thrilled with the kaleidoscopic world brought from the reaches of the universe. Which is why it becomes no surprise to hear that Director James Cameron had been waiting to produce this movie for over fifteen years, only being stopped by CGI and limitations. However, once a $500 million budget was procured and graphics were to his visionary standard, everything was golden. And golden it was. Right from first ten minutes you get the essential story: Worthington was a Jarhead that was hurt, had a brother that died and got the chance to take his place on a science expedition on Pandora, a Earth-type moon with natural inhabitants, the Navi that are not happy with what humans are doing. From there the stage is set to meet the rest of the cast, and learn that Worthington job is to run an Avatar, a human-made version of the Navi to help learn their culture and get to know them better. However there is a hitch in the scientific plans in the form of Stephen Langs character, the officer in charge of the defense and mining of an important ore on Pandora. Langs only goal is to remove the Navi so that they can mine the hell out of the planet. Thus it is the fate of Worthingtons character to be stuck in the middle, battling with his conscious. The plot flows effortlessly between a steady dose of character development, action, and humor, which guarantees that most will be enthralled with the world presented. Worthingtons character Jake Sully, who has always been a solider, keeps the motto of speak only when it really counts. This makes him a good pair along Weavers character Grace, who is the lead scientist for the Avatar program. Cameron takes a lot of what made Weavers character amazing from Aliens and brought it back here, keeping her snarky and to the point. Yet the large selling point for the mammoth was its CGI and how they incorporated it. Im not going to try and sugarcoat it here; theres a lot. About 80% of this movie is based purely on the computer renditions of the actors while they are scurrying around out in the dense tropical forests of Pandora. And while the concept of it caused a bit of a ruckus before opening, they pulled it off flawlessly. Everything from the luminescent trees to the exotic creatures in this utopian world looked and fit perfectly into place. Whats more is that the facial and body structures of each character really made you feel like they were meant to exist. Especially watching Saldanas character Neytiri and how each movement in her face looked perfectly natural is an accomplishment. In fact, in most of the Navi, you could see almost the exact actor or actress behind their characters eyes, and know that they in fact were doing those exact movements. Cameron does an amazing job bringing you a masterful story, yet at times he almost loses both himself and the viewer in what he was talking about. The fanciful plants and pictures everywhere, the almost Bay-ish humor that would spring up on occasion, (which I feel is at no fault to Cameron, rather a ploy to get younger viewers more involved) you could have the potential to forget what Cameron is trying to get across in this episodic fantasy; and thats everyone and everything has a life. You observe as the Navi savor every twig, every leaf, pray to every kill they hunt for food, never enjoying what they do. It is a concept that stems from the 90s, yet has followed Cameron and has become a bigger part of todays world, with the threats of global warming and movies like The Inconvenient Truth. While Camerons intent was not to preach and to bring about the age of utopian society with nature, he walk back to the screen with a carpet of glowing moss under his feet, and nobody heard him coming. Seeing Pandora through the eyes of an uneducated human-turned-alien is the perfect vehicle for spellbinding encounters with the landscape, creatures, and foliage of this strange world. But there's something utterly familiar about the adventure, with plenty of predictable moments to keep us safely on the rails. This didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie--even with formulaic plot points, the storytelling was well crafted and the CG characters were believable and poignant. Based on the trailer, I expected to be distracted by the shifts between CG and practical photography, but in practice it worked well. As the story hit its stride, I came to sympathize with the Navi and this emotional investment further helped suspend disbelief. Walking out, my cynical take was: "Matrix meets Titanic meets Pocahontas." But even with nods of the head and recycled material (see: credit music), the sum is much greater than the parts. Expand

So many at this point, that it is extremely rare that I experience any sense of awe or wonder at a film. "Avatar" stepped in and changed that for me in a tremendous way. If you're expecting a brand-new, never before seen tale, you've come to the wrong movie. The story and formula are tried and true, as both James Cameron and most other prominent directors in Hollywood well know. Where this movie steps out of that mold, is in the fantastic world that James and crew have created. The sea, land, sky, and life on display here are like nothing you've seen before, and yet, are so familiar that you slide right into the feel of the place like an old pair of jeans. As for story, learning, loving, betrayal, and redemption are all on display and used to competent effect. Where this movie really shines, however, is in three dimensions. I have yet to see a movie that uses the 3D so intelligently. Used here, 3D truly puts you inside the spaces of this film, and the experience is made all the better for it. As for the technology of the creatures, plants, and the blue-skinned, three-fingered Na'Vi, every one in Hollywood should sit up and take notice. There has been nothing yet to compare with the realism of everything on display. Gollum was long the benchmark by which CG performances were measured, but in my world, this is no longer the case. The Na'Vi, in terms of movement and emotion, are the most convincing creation ever to come out of a silicon chip. When they smile, you believe it. When they cry, you feel their pain. I stand up and salute James Cameron and all the brilliant computer artists who came together with technology to create an utterly believable world, along with the plants, animals and people who inhabit it. Coming back down to earth, I must say this will not go down as the greatest movie ever made. It has it's flaws. If you've seen a James Cameron film before, you probably know what to expect in terms of story, and I can't say that this will "change the way" we watch movies forever. What I can say is this. For the sheer experience of it, for the spectacle, for the awe and wonder, this is the best film on the big screen today. Expand

Go stare in awe not only at the spectacle, that which is an absolute feast for our depraved eyes, but be in awe of a reality so evolved and connected and powerful. So beyond Kate Winslets breasts, and KFC, and the price of gas. So enlightening, you almost for a minute there look at the car keys and the car and the car park in disgust. It's nearly impossible to distinguish the natural surroundings from any computer imagery and make no mistake this movie NEEDS to be seen in HD 3D and no matter what other 3D movies (3D) you have seen so for this just blows them out of the window and into space. Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi Maybe once, just once, has "I see you" worked as an effective bit of movie dialogue, and the moment when Neyriti(Zoe Saldana) tells Jake Sully(Sam Worthington) that, well, she sees him, isn't it. The soul mining of this Na'vi hottie performed upon this former marine is pure romantic pap, but "I see you" could have transcended its pedestrian connotations, had Jake's loyalties been more vacillating. A nice guy from the start, "Avatar" could have distinguished itself from "Dances with Wolves" comparisons by making Runs Like Manute Bol less compassionate and open-minded than the Kevin Costner character. Confined to a wheelchair, Jake's shoot to kill days are over, but that doesn't mean his warring mentality needed to be over too. The human infiltration into the Na'vi world needed just one benevolent presence(the scientist played by Sigourney Weaver), not two. After all, Jake is on a science-based detail, by default. If it wasn't for his accident, he'd be carrying a gun, and dancing with money. The tepid love story gains in power only if Neyriti was employed as the catalyst for Jake's transformation into a full-blooded Na'vi. But since he comes to Pandora without a shred of prejudicial feelings toward the planet's indigenous population, our protagonist has no character arc. Turning Na'vi-nese becomes inevitable, becomes ho-hum. It's probably the main reason why the story can't keep up with the special effects. The two sides, military and science, are too black and white, in terms of moralistic complexity. When Neyriti tells Jake that she sees him, the meaning is way too literal. (Jake is a human being.) "I see you" could have been issued as a challenge to be good, in the name of interspecies love. (For the record: "I see you" worked beautifully in Wayne Wang's "The Joy Luck Club"). Expand

Visually, it was stunning but not the world-changer that I had been lead to believe that it was - at least for the public. It may be this type of world-changer for the industry. It was beautiful but failed to live up to the high expectations that I had. As a movie, I thought it was the biggest piece of anti-military, anti-corporate America, and pro-enviromentalist propoganda that I had ever seen. It was so one-sided that it hurt the film. Could he not have filled in some backstory on what drove the corporation to need the underground resource other than pure evil greed or give the military a more realistic sense other than simple blood-lust. There was no depth to these elements of the story which exposed Cameron's liberal, self-hating mindset. If he spent as much time and energy into making a great movie as he did into pushing his liberal agenda then it would have been huge success instead of the beautiful propoganda piece that was released. The most successful part of Cameron's operation was making sure the full extent of the bias of his film was not discussed before opening weekend to save the boxoffice. That will not be the case the second weekend. Prepare for the backlash. Expand

James Cameron's Avatar is one of the most important American films ever made. It pushes into the mainstream many concepts that we must embrace as a society in order to survive on a planet we are slowly destroying. To see another film James Cameron's Avatar is one of the most important American films ever made. It pushes into the mainstream many concepts that we must embrace as a society in order to survive on a planet we are slowly destroying. To see another film with a very similar theme check out Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. Human's arrive on a planet named Pandora and discover that under a village of indigenous humanoids is a rare mineral they want called "obtainium". This is the MacGuffin of the plot. James Cameron makes this an obvious joke because he wants us to know that the real motivation for the corporate and military types of the film is man's urge to destroy and kill. The concept of the film is that a few humans are given the chance to inhabit Avatars which are living simulacrums of the Navi(again Mr. Cameron is making a joke, Navi being a compression of native). The main character, Jake takes to his new body and learns all the secrets of the planet. Unlike Earth, where we can't actually link our minds to other living creatures, The Navi can actually entwine a part of their bodies with other animals and plants and share direct communication with the ecosystem. They rightly believe that all life is connected. If I have one complaint it's that Mr. Cameron has the natives call their planet goddess Eewa which reminds me of Ewoks which reminds me of the beginning of the decay of George Lucas' creative talents. The last hour of the film is standard action film and love story but done extremely well. Since this is a Fantasy the good guys win and send the military and corporate greed-heads packing. Why am I talking about this film on my Dog Blog? Because for the last half dozen years I've been trying to figure out what life is about and partnering up with my dog this last year has made me even more aware that all life is precious. I may even try to overcome my revulsion of spiders and insects and try to capture and release them when I find them in my house. The smartest person I ever met (PHD from Cambridge University) once told me about the Gaia Theory. She said earth is a living organism and we have become a disease on it's surface. Earth has had life on it most likely since the point when the surface cooled enough for liquid water to form. There is four billion years of DNA research under Gaia's belt and when we reach the point where she can no longer bear us a virus will emerge that will wipe us out. Maybe we can learn to co-exist with Gaia but we haven't gotten there yet. Expand

I expected that without the gimmicky glasses the film would lose most of what people are raving about (see Beowulf) but darned if that wasn't an awesome film. I saw Titanic in '97 and though the visuals were incredible, probably the best until Avatar, I felt that the story was too hackneyed to ignore just for the sake of special effects. Avatar has come in for some of the same criticism from some viewers, but though there isn't anything really new in this plot, it's surprisingly well written, at least for a big budget action film. But of course the story only needed to not be annoying, because the real reason everyone is going to see this film is the visuals, which even in plain old 2D are enough to make Lucas's last three space operas look like something out of Ed Wood's filmography. Only Lord of the Rings has come close to creating an entire world with this level of detail, and some of the same folks are on board for this film. But they have really outdone themselves. The only negative reviews I've seen from non-critics have been from conservatives who are offended by a movie that says we shouldn't rape and pillage native peoples and pristine environments. I'm not sure that's really a defensible position, so no comment there :) Expand

Friday afternoon, a friend and I had gone to see Avatar in RealD 3D at a theatre that was near her house. We enjoyed about 45 minutes of the film when it started to skip... it stopped and started about 3-5 times before it finally froze and shut down. The crowd was outraged and we were told to leave and get "Rain Check" passes at customer service because the system had failed and the movie would not play, it would take 3 hours to fix. So with complete disappointed we got out rain check passes and decided to come back the next day after the problem would be fixed. The first 45 minutes that we did see that day was pretty cool so far, so we definitely wanted to give it another go. As we sat in our seats this afternoon (12/19/09) I sensed that something was going to go wrong, and I could tell my friend had similar intuitions. When the movie was finally about to start, they showed the "please silence your cell phones screen" and then... it stopped.... frozen... the manager came in and told us what we had feared.... it froze... again and it would take forever to fix. We left the theatre utterly pissed and completely done with the stupid theatre. Full of outrage, I expressed my anger with one of the employees. I attempted to get my money back, she of course told me it was impossible, and instead gave us rain check passes and a few extras because of our inconvenience. (sweet? bitter sweet) We decided to go to Imax instead, we figured the massive screen would make the experience all the more amazing. After driving the long way there, parking, and then running many blocks to Imax, out of breath, we were met with an enormous line and a sign that said "Avatar 3D, SOLD OUT" Blast! To cut to the chase, after running back to the parking garage, we went to another theatre owned by the same company as the other theatre that screwed up, and were able to use our passes and get in, and yes that time it worked, no screw ups. After all of this complete heck... IT WAS WELL WORTH IT!! After we left the theatre, we cared little about the shenanigans that went down in attempts to see the movie. We had completely forgotten and were only focused on the movie, and still trying to process it. I've heard complaints about the music and that it wasn't very good... it was great. It was what you'd expect of an epic sci-fi. I've also heard complaints about the story; I didn't see any problem with it either. The only problem I saw was with some of the acting, there were a few actors that didn't seem to do as good of a job as you'd expect for a movie of this magnitude. BUT, the actors in questions were not the focus of the movie and weren't shown often enough to interfere with the experience, thus it wasn't a big problem. The visual effects of this movie were completely amazing. It was hard to believe that most of what we were viewing was all visual effects. The landscapes, the creatures, they were all very crisp and clear, and very realistic. Coupled with the 3D glasses, it almost seemed as if you were there. It is almost hard for me to even describe. The concepts of the movie were not 100% original. A lot of it has been done already to some degree. But the way in which they were presented, to me, seemed totally original. There is something said in the movie that will make you understand more fully the Navi and their existence. Its something that Dr. Augustine said to Mr. Selfridge about the way the planet works and its relationship with the life on the planet. It has something to do with the goddess that the Navi follow. I would say more, but I dont want to spoil it for anyone. Despite the crap that went down before seeing the movie, I enjoyed the experience. I have no regrets, I am absolutely pleased that I went to see it, and glad that I saw it in 3D. It was amazing. Go see it. Now. Expand
