A visual treat. Pandora draws you in and takes your breath away at some moments. But a cliche and rather predictable plot, and some bad lines, leave it wanting.

Seriously not all that it was cracked up to be, the story was drawn out too long to then just rush the action seen in one last ditch attempt to pull the audience in. Overall, nothing to be rated as a top movie of all time.

The visuals are excellent. However the characters are a little two dimensional. Also the storyline, especially the ending, does not ring true to the logic of the movie. The bad guys are winning then all of a sudden the good guys start to win.

Visually it looked animated and false, at no point was i suckered into feeling it was real. CGI when its done right is seemless and un-noticedable Unfortunately Avatar just drowns you in it, never giving your mind a chance to accept it as real. Riddled with movie cliches (I actually found myself shouting at sigourney weaver as she calmly proclaims that a bullet in her stomach will ruin her day) poor characters and a story thats been done far better (dances with wolves) this film just left me feeling like I'd wasted 3hrs watching it. If it were merely a pretty picture, inspiring film makers to create new worlds when presented with the plausible impetus to do so, there would be no debate in my mind. But it's not. This movie has been respected by critics and commonplace audience alike. What did it do beyond it's visuals? It was written unwittingly, seemingly with an intent to do just that. The story inspires nothing more than a cheap nostalgic stroll to the over-spun screenplay graveyard of every Hollywood cliche. Pitiful exploits of corny one-liners, narrow characters and predictable plot twists saturate every moment of Aavatar. It is ultimately mundane in every way beyond the visual stimulus. Expand

They've both spent ridiculous amounts of money on over-hyped and extremely over-rated pieces of garbage. The difference is, at least Lucas didn't steal ideas from at least a half dozen other films that tell the same story much better. Pocahontas, FernTree Gully, Last of the Mohicans, The Last Samurai, BraveHeart. I won't bother explaining the plot because if you've seen any of the above mentioned films, then you've seen Avatar. And they didn't require flashy CGI to get their story across. Speaking of which, the CGI is by far the highlight of the movie, but even that was eclipsed by Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. And that movie is 10 years old now. The characters are one dimentional, the acting is fairly poor and the dialogue would surely make Lucas himself cringe. At least he can sleep peacefully in the knowledge that he didn't create the word "unobtainium". How the hell the actors managed to say that with a straight face I'm buggered if I know. Also, the movie makes such a blunt statement about our environmental woes and war in Iraq (we will fight terror with terror) that it is, quite frankly, an insult to the audiences intelligence. If I want to hear people make political and environmental statements I'll watch the news thanks very much. I go to the movies to escape real world issues, not to be beaten over the head with them. Cameron also stole a couple of sound effects from the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. Can you pick them? Expand

It sucks you in, making you believe you saw a good movie as you walk out of the movie theatre. After the dazzle wore off half way through the movie I started realizing how predictable the movie was, how stereotypical every character was. The mercenaries were brutal killers, the protagonist falls in love and switches to the "good side",the corporate exec. was willing to turn his head for profit. Where were the variables. I do see the side of the plot that is trying to make a point on what we have become as a society and what we have done to get here. Overall it felt like a very expensive Pocohantas. Expand

I would probably send my rating down around the 5 area had I not seen it in 3-D, since you had a sense that Cameron wanted to use it for a way to enhance the movie and not just be eye candy I'll give me credit for that. James Cameron gets all the credit for this decent movie, when all the good stuff, ie, the visual effects, were done by Weta Workshop, a company which every NZer knows the name of, and yet gets little credit for taking up the slack for the weak plot.

Even the so called professional critics are love it or hate it. The most astute comment I read was (to paraphrase) "all you who have voted this movie a "10" will look back on it in 5 years will wonder what they ever saw in it." Our world (EARTH to you reviewers who are a little caught up in the box of Pandora) is so much more complex than Corporations = Bad, Natives =Good, Military = Bad, Environmentalists = Good. This movie had no depth of story or character, and nary a degree of deviation in the Disneyish plot from start to finish. As for the people commenting that they wish to live on Pandora I am truly speechless. After 2.5 hrs of staring at it in dark glasses, in all it's 3D glory, I was pretty bored. There are just so many flaws from a scientific point of vew, from a military strategy point of view, from a linguistic point of view. I can't believe Mr. Cameron thinks so little of the intelligence of his audience that he has floating mountains and named things "home tree", "tree of souls", and "UNOBTAINIUM". My brain started to bleed on that one, and no one even snickered in the theater I was in...I was shocked!!!. My other fear is that it seems in our current world, if you criticize this movie and it's "story" or "message", it must mean that you are against environmentalism and must be some war monger or corporate fat cat. There is simply no humour, no story and fairly bad acting..... (Was I the only one who wondered why the tough parapalegic marine became Australian during some voice overs? ) Only later I looked up who Sam W. was and found out he was Australian. Maybe a late overdub or two was done and the vocal coach was unavailable. You would think the director of the 2 highest grossing movies of all time would catch something like that!!!...He was probably too busy adding a few more vines or lumenescent plants to a scene. Double checking the dialogue and quality of acting just gets in the way when you are busy! The reason I gave a 2 rating over a zero is to recognize all the hard work of the CGI people who made a beautiful visual and who will never see 1/100,000th of the money that Mr. Cameron will take home. So they get a 2/2 for their part and Mr. Cameron gets 0 for 8 for his contribution to filmaking. Thank you for reading Expand

The CGI and motion capture are above and beyond yet don't completely blot out the plot and storyline like in 300. The 3D is wonderfuly implimented so as to provide a sense of depth and realism to the already amazing visuals, making it less of a projected flat image but not like traditional 3D where everything has to pop out at you which can sometimes be overbearing. The story is original in every way though some of it does seem to hint at other stories, but this can be said for every movie since everything can be compared to everything else. The music score by James Horner is facinating and provides the fuel to the already burning hot visuals and heated love story, providing emotional highs and lows that one rarely experiences when watching a film. One suggestion would be go with no opinion but enjoy it to it's fullest, leave reading critical reviews till after seeing Avatar with a clear mind. It is a must see in theaters and 3D. Expand

That's when I was certain that there was nothing that rang true in the world being created. As if James Cameron could conceive of a any alternative form of evolution. It was half-baked ideas, one after another, and characters that were simply cringe worthy. The whole cinema laughed when the aliens started a trance dance to some gaudy Enya music to make the simplistic pantheistic god do some magic. The laugh wasn't as loud as when the aliens has sex. Cameron created a big extravaganza. But the world and characters he created lacked any complexity to the point that you could simply not buy any of it. The graphics were nice. The story, by any measure, was embarrassing. Expand

I was very surprised not in just the quality of special effects and how they were conveyed into real sensuous emotion. The love and heart shown between its characters really showed through. However the real spirit of the movie transcended the special effects, or even the acting and story line. What really impressed me was the moral integrity this movie has. Watching Avatar in 3D has been a whole new experience for me. The special effects were like being the right there on the screen. 3D technology has come a long long way and I can definitely see this as being the new wave of the future for the cinematic Industry. With this being said this movie touched me. I was surprised to see myself moved to being teary eyed. I was expecting an action and suspense movie but received something so much more. Special effects alone are like candy they sometimes taste good but don't leave you with anything of real value. Avatar however had a message very poignant for the times we live in. Some might see this a one of the few flaws of the movie, that and the overall length. However I saw it as its greatest strength. Avatar mirrored in a way how western civilization has impacted North and South American cultures. How what was seen as primitive or even savage was really a culture who were in general much more in touch with their environment. However with modern technologies, and spiritual blindness (i.e. greed and prejudice) they and the environment that supports us were but nearly wiped out. Unfortunate for us this is a fair tale of sorts. This movie did not pull any punches in showing how destructive and extreme such spiritual blind spots can manifest themselves. It was for me a sad reminder of what has happened in our own history. For the inhabitants of Pandora, the foe was overcome... for now anyway. But for us the story is yet to be finished. This film inspired me to understand what this world needs the most, spiritual and by effect environmental healing. I hope in some way shape or form to be used as a powerful force in this universe to help our world at a time which so desperately needs it. This is my prayer. And by my freewill I have chosen to do whatever I can to help this come to its fruition. Expand
