It's average. The plot is average, acting average. The 3D effects are not satisfying. The only good thing is the Na'vi facial expressions. Overall, mediocre movie.

Forgetting the many times rehashed plot, or underplot, AVATAR is the most visually pleasing film I have ever seen. This is the real "Shock & Awe."

I walked into the movie expecting a great visual spectacle with an average plot and character development. The plot, acting and character development was so bad, however, that it frankly ruined the technological experience. I would recommend seeing it in theaters just for the visuals. This movie is not going to translate well onto the small screen. and after 5-7 years, after the technology is dated, people will look back and think "this is a truly awful movie." There is nothing beyond the visuals to carry this ham-fisted outing. Once the technology is no longer new, this will definitely not stand the test of time. I would think with $250 million, James Cameron would have bought himself a script. Expand

Vastly unimaginative and boring. Plot and ideas all derivative. The much-trumpeted special effects looked like all other cgi - would have preferred it if all the aliens were made out of papier-mache. 3D utterly pointless. The 1 point here is actually for performances - the baddy, who was done with gusto, and the hero, who was mildly intriguing at the beginning when not a ten foot blue cat-thing. Any great movie always has debth to the characters - you learn their personality and their quirks, you even begin to feel emotion. You laugh when they laugh and cry when they cry. I didn't really feel any emotion during Avatar. There were many deaths in the movie and I didn.t feel any real sadness, which is odd for me. Then again, it as produced by the same person who done Titanic, which was a very good movie. This movie, however, can be reviewed just like a video game: good graphics, bad gameplay. First half of the movie is an ultimate bore-fest, having almost nothing close to canon (JC, why did you allow "unobtanium?") . Second half is where everything is taken up a few notches, giving some very good fight scenes and a Star Wars-esque battlefield. It's pure nostalgia for the whole movie, and I like that. However, the reason why I give it a 7 is the matter of why I watched it in 3d. 3d is a fad, through and through, and this movie proves it. Ironically, it was the human metals in the first half that made everything look like a fake motion blur. For some reason, I really couldn't watch the movie because of this, and, if I watched this in 2d, it MIGHT have been a good 7.3 movie. Actual rating: 6.5 (bonus points to second half of movie). I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, I'll admit that the panache with which the visuals are delivered is worth at least one or two whole points. Cameron's pacing is very good, and the film's action scenes are some of the best filmed in the decade. Still, it's not a groundbreaking film, I don't think, and the 3D was distracting, fuzzy, and ineffective. The storyline could have been great, but instead was destroyed by a limp script (the "Kansas" lines was really not needed), an overweening self-importance, and clumsy themes that really do become offensive. Cameron may not have meant this, but the film too strenuously scorned everything that is uniquely human. He tried to make us weep when trees are knocked over, but cheer when Americans are blown up. The "noble savage" plot wears thin with such a treatment, and I wondered at how incurious the Na'vi seemed. No character was genuinely interesting, and despite the melodrama, there was little to no emotion invested in the story. By the big end battle I just didn't care who won or not -- although I DID care what cool stunts would be shown next. See? So, the overall experience is fun and sparkly, as long as you can ignore the weak, sometimes-offensive message. Expand

The storyline and the characters were grossly underdeveloped. The effects were good but I was under the impression that they would be so good that the plant life and the Na'vi would look realistic. And don't get me started on the look of the Na'vi! They resembled African-Americans (braids with beads in them and wide noses as well as some of the tribe leaders' clothing which looked like a Masai rip-off) and Native-Americans (noses, long hair, tall thin like the Disney version of Pocahontas, and also their clothing) they were too lazy when it came time to designing their look. I did feel at some points like I was watching a cartoon movie and one which I would never touch with a ten foot pole. I felt that more needed to be told as far as the Na'vi were concerned, and I wanted to see more of the beautiful forests. In fact, at one point I did think that it would have been cool if Pandora had no sunlight so that during the whole film we could see the beautiful glow-in-the-dark plant life. That was my favorite part of the movie and I still hope to have a dream in which I'm surrounded by such beauty! The movie really went down-hill for me when the war started, at first it was fine but then it went on for too long and it turned the movie into another action flick. I feel like I'm the only person who thinks that James Cameron isn't very good. Sure he is good with special effects, but he's no artist who can really be innovative (like those filmmakers who don't take 5 years to make a movie that is generic in terms of storyline which is the most important reason to see a movie) and write great stories with great characters and depth. I did enjoy Avatar as a fun popcorn flick and am glad I saw it but i don't understand why so many people are giving it so much high praise! And I am horrified that it's being nominated for some major awards. I just hope it doesn't win an Oscar like Titanic did (another movie I enjoyed as a good popcorn flick and yet even as a 14 year old with crush on Dicaprio, I knew better than to think it deserved the awards it received!) or I'll go crazy. I am usually a pretty good judge of movies from their trailers but the trailer for Avatar is filled with some of the more cliched elements. The CGI effects are marvelous and the realization of the world of Pandora is very detailed and persuasive. Having read cynical accounts of the plot as "Dances with Smurfs" I was also surprised by the story which was not exactly the strength of the movie but also didn't detract too much from the movie going experience. I feel a little sorry for people who become deeply attached to this movie and wrapped up in its reality...but on the other hand, I might even consider going to the movie again in the IMAX version. One hardly knows where to begin, hmmm... First the positive, uhhm... i liked how the Jenny Craig Iroquois Space Cat Elves used a backhand draw when yanking their bows (I wonder if anybody ever did that?). The negative aspects would be predictable, condescending, rascist, sexist and mislabelled as science fiction. Just because space ships and other planets are involved does not make a movie SciFi ! There is another category known as "Space Opera" that would arguably better label this film. There is little in the way of any SCIENCE as opposed to a whopping slice of FICTION. Unobtainium (snicker) is only valuable because the movie says so alluding to it as an "energy source". (So its coal bloated up with hydrogen to make it float, imaginative but not even vaguely science.) Why would a Mech require a big knife (tip of the hat to Crocodile Dundee?). How can a "floating mountain" discharge a sizable waterfall in a climate where apparently it never rains (perhaps Mother Gaia doesn't let it rain when bigshot liberals are filming movies). Hammerhead rhino's, six legged horse's and cottonwood seeds floating about (does anyone on super wonder planet have allergies?). My girlfriend and I, both SciFi aficiandos just watched a film called "Pandorum" which the critics largely destroyed. While hardly perfect it was a Darfur Tower in stature to "Avatars" small rooming house somewhere in the west eighties. Expand

Don't get me wrong I'm sure the technology driving it was revolutionary, but the story is so drab and run of the mill that in the first five minutes I knew what was going to happen. It has a good message, but I fear that this plight was drowned out by loud explosions and glossed over with fancy computers. Also I did not like how in the first six minutes of the film I could tell who the bad guys were. It would have created a much more interesting conflict had the lines between good and evil been blurred as they so often are in real life. We know off the bat that the humans are selfish pigs who are occupying the planet Pandora for nothing more than a monetary greed. Over all I fear this film's quality has been blown out of proportion and the ratings skewed because James Cameron created some new fancy machine that helps us confuse great CGI with great story. A score of 4/10 represents what is now at the start of 2010; a mediocre film which showcases current computer graphics technology at its peak. In a few years this technology will be outdated and it is my belief that the film will be mostly forgotten. It is definitely not so bad that it's unwatchable but the far too long run time and simple story mean that I'd never bother watching it again. Expand

After a year and a half, the film became the highest-grossing film ever made. Now it appears with his new film, Avatar he may top that. Without explaining the plot the film was overall a masterful film which overcomes the thought of it being a traditional film. The film presents an alternate form of conquest when mankind had lost it's passion and respect, demonstrated in how the main characters and the military base they work at appears in a monotone colour scheme of dark greys and greens while the surrounding planet is vibrant in its colour. Acting wise the film had a mixed result. Sigourney Weaver came off as the best in the film with every line she said being sarcastic or semi-humor. Michelle Rodriguez on the other hand, while good in her role, served the basic purpose of being eye-candy. Sam Worthington was mixed, while he did good at delivering his lines, his narrations at parts in the film felt stiff. The special effects worked very well, after a while they become part of the movie and you forget that it is CGI. While the film was overall well-done their were faults. For the first half the film is confusing and does not seem like it will improve. it feels annoying, but improves after the main character is lost in the forest. Some parts such as the general not dying when he should die feels like the editor should have fixed this. Another problem, not related to the film was the 3D process. It used a 1980's 3D process which involved clear stripe 3D glasses and it was not needed for this film. The film has around two to three moments where the effect works, but the whole movie is in 3D so during most of the film it becomes an annoying problem, it would have been better if they has simply not released a 3D version. In the end while these faults are prevalent, the film bypasses most of these faults, expect the 3D faults, and works as an excellently written and visually beautiful film. Expand

Director James Cameron has once again gone way above my expectation. I mean great on a level that would have made this film iconic. Instead, it pandered and borrowed, and used every trick it could to distract us from the fact that the story has been told before. In fact, it was told recently in The Last Samurai, and less recently in Dances with Wolves. That is the films major flaw. There are minor ones as well. If ever there was a film that deserved a magnificent, soaring, original John Williams score that people would instantly recognize, this was it. Something along the lines of Star Wars, Superman, Raiders or Jaws. Instead we get an ignominious James Horner piece overflowing with his tiresome use of choirs and way too much borrowing from his previous scores. I can't imagine he is happy with this effort after creating FAR better music for films like Titanic, Braveheart, The Land Before Time, Willow, Aliens, Glory and probably his best work, Star Trek II. In my opinion, Hans Zimmer would have been the logical choice, considering the rip he's been on lately. At the very least, they should have given Alan Silvestri a shot. A few of the other minor flaws... Too many obvious plot devices (fog that prevents instruments from working, A tree that can conveniently transfer souls from useless human bodies to perfect alien bodies, etc) Too much overt storytelling. Can't you let the audience come to the conclusion that everything is "connected." Why did we have to have it explained to us? Some minor stupidity, like machine guns that can't hit much of anything. In fact, why couldn't they have simply used their gigantic bulldozer to destroy the tree at the end? Floating mountains? How? Anyway, I was entertained enough by the visuals to allow enough of these gripes to slip by without feeling the movie had been spoiled. It's just frustrating at how often films like this only need a little more oversight to avoid these painful flaws. Expand

Cliche, simple, and relatively bare when it comes to character development. All of this said, Avatar is still one of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. It is rather unfortunate that this movie, in order to become a blockbuster, had to be made for the typical movie goer. If it wasn't for people with overactive bladders and short attention spans, the ideas in this epic could have been more fully explored. I just hope that the sequel, if there is one, will be longer and better planned. The movie has several general underlying themes that are fairly unique and there is plenty of correlation between the goings-on in the movie and the goings-on in our own world, but those goings-on are overdone in film. This movie is a must watch for anyone who is willing to take the time to properly analyze it, unlike those jokers at the Vatican who saw the worship of a tangible spirit as little more than druidism. This movie is stunning, and the world that James Cameron and company made is one that I actually have more of a connection to than the world I live on. Bravo. BRAVO. Expand

It works, as far the effect, but is paying an extra few dollars to see it, there is no sense it added that much to the movie. This dream that 3D will make you feel like you are in the movie is not a reality here.
