Halo 3 has its flaws, but they are greatly surpassed by its strengths. Let's start with the flaws. The single player in this game was simply... average, maybe even bad. The storyline was hard to get into and you never felt an attachment to the characters. Aside from this there were very few moments in the single player that really gave me chills or seemed "Epic". The storyline was hard to get into and you never felt an attachment to the characters. Aside from this there were very few moments in the single player that really gave me chills or seemed "Epic". Aside from the single player, which is bad, the multiplayer is great. The only problem with the multiplayer is the fact that many people in the Halo community are immature jerks who enjoy making other peoples' game experience unenjoyable. The rest of the multiplayer is flawless. Controls and weapon systems are top notch, and battles are exciting. The gameplay requires a huge amount of skill, at least compared to most FPS's. I've played many of the FPS's that people always say are more skillful than Halo (Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament III, Team Fortress 2, Gears of War 2, Call of Duty Games, and a few older FPS's.) and Halo beats many of these by a large margin. (From a skill perspective). I usually do well in matches and am considered and consider myself (atleast when I was good at Halo a while ago, before I started playing Fallout 3) a good Halo 3 player and I still run into many people who could easily destroy me. Overall, Halo 3 has a very lackluster storyline with an amazing multiplayer, but if you're looking for a compelling single player, try Half-Life 2 or Bioshock. Expand

The online multi-player is highly addictive and is very fun, though the 4-player online co-op doesn't work as well as you may want it to. Forge is a neat idea, but won't hold your interest for very long, but the saved films feature is very good. But, the campaign mode is very disappointing, and leaves you hanging at the end.

Really fun, I rarely enjoy console games. The multiplayer is about as much fun as I'm going to have with a gamepad/controller. Still, in terms of single player gameplay, it really isn't a glorious achievement in the FPS world. Solid, shiny, pretty, fun, but not really deserving of the massive hype machine that seems to have driven the series since the first title started to take off.

Not too much new here! Same game, same enemies. Some of the weapons have changed and the graphics are a little prettier-but not enough to warrant me spending 70$. I like it but don't love-it's not Bioshock!

People are giving it a 10, well. i wouldn't give it anywhere near it, or a 0. Halo 3 is massive disappointment in both campaign and multiplayer. Sure forge is good as well as recording, but the game is in fact no different. The graphical improvements aren't even that amazing.

I'd wait till its 20$ and then go pick it up.

Pretty solid campaign mode. The levels are extremely varied but you will eventually getting tired of using the battle rifle(which is pretty much what your gonna be using the whole time) The enemies dont really vary to much which makes them kinda boring. The weapons seem pretty decently balanced. the removal of a lock on rocket pretty much makes it useless in campaign. So you'll have Pretty solid campaign mode. So you'll have to get used to using the spartan laser, which at first is pretty difficult but extremely satisfying. The Theather mode keeps things fresh by allowing you to save short film clips and take photos, which if you have xbox live can be viewed by others. Multiplayer is where this game really shines. Bungie usually pumps out new maps and game variants pretty quickly so its pretty hard to get bored. The maps seem pretty fair in layout so you cant blame how much you suck on the unfair spawing points and weapon locations. Overall this is a fun game that you'll probally be popping in years from now. Its not without its flaws but im sure we can all overlook them and appreciate this game for its great points Expand

Halo 3 doesn't change the formula by much but the things it adds, like forge and improved matchmaking, are enough to make it worth a purchase. Just don't expect to have your mind blown if you already played Halo 2, as the campaign and main game mechanics are almost identical.

I know I'm a little behind the ball on this, but this is my first year owning a 360 (got one of the new wireless ones for Christmas), and so this is the game I happened to get for it. As a person who's played all three games, I have to say this was one of the more satisfying ones, and yet, at the same time, I didn't have as much fun with it. Keep in mind that as I'm writing this review, II know I'm a little behind the ball on this, but this is my first year owning a 360 (got one of the new wireless ones for Christmas), and so this is the game I happened to get for it. As a person who's played all three games, I have to say this was one of the more satisfying ones, and yet, at the same time, I didn't have as much fun with it. Keep in mind that as I'm writing this review, I have yet to experience it through multiplayer, and in my day, I LOVED having friends around to play splitscreen muitplayer with as we shoved eachother around and cursed in anger (and generally laughed our asses off at the hilarious kills we got). That being said, from a single-player standpoint, I though this was a really cool game. Sure, the story was a little hard to follow at times, and I did get annoyed that it seemed that you were the only capable fighter on the battle field, and yet even on normal, I found myself time and time again being killed by the simple fact that there were sooooo many people trying to tear my face off at once. Most of the time, I could handle the covenant and the flood by shooting at them until their shields went down or they just weakened, and then I slammed them in the face with the butt of my rifle. While this might work against certain enemies, I found that really you only want to do that if the baddies happen to get separated, otherwise they will gangrape you. Overall, I was alright with the ending for the most part, up until they showed that somehow the portal closed just as the ship got halfway through it, allowing Arbiter through but leaving Master Chief and Cortana behind. Now THAT'S just silly. Still, despite my griping, this game glued me to the seat for a solid three days of gameplay, and I still intend on keeping it to check out the multiplayer. For some fairly solid gameplay, a decent and gripping story of survival, and the fact that it's half sci-fi drama and half action movie, I give this game a solid 8 out of 10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tbh, the game doesn't even deserve that much critical bashing from envious PS3 players who know that you can only play Halo games on the Xbox 360. But the fact is the story line is not clearly understandable, especially the ending that left a lot of detailed questions regarding the remaining Covenant's plans. The game play however, is diverse and consistent in weaponry, the ambiance in later levels when you begin to face Flood enemies was impressive, some of the USNC soldiers especially were quite convincing when they reacted to witnessing the Flood threat. However, what the game lacks is the sense of support by the human soldiers you get at occasional times, every time I lead a squad they either end up getting killed by their own grenades or they seem to not have the common sense in avoiding an enemy by taking cover which results in me being the only one as John-117 handling all the overloaded amount of enemies in one place, hence the AI of the game acting like a mechanical clown. There are too many enemies in the in the second-last and final campaign level, for me, they were as useless as statues while adventurously driving my Warthog with another alien just enjoying the well-fitted soundtrack (that was a good idea!). On the overall, Halo 3 was a satisfactory conclusion to the long trilogy. Expand

Halo 3 was the first ever example of a complete package, 7th generation shooter. The sheer scale of this game was just incredible. As my first ever console experience of a shooter, I have to say that Halo 3 blew me away in all aspects. The graphics, environments, weapons, a map editor in Forge, the multiplayer matchmaking featuring TrueSkill, file share, the number of game modes. It's all just so revolutionary. So why can't I give it 10/10? Even though I've spent countless hours with friends playing split screen, changing the number of game setting which not even Black Ops can match, and also you get split screen online with guest account. But the one thing that makes this not worthy is simply my dislike of the combat system. There's no recoil and another contributing factor is that it's a console shooter so controls aren't as fluent as Call of Duty. Clearly this game set the benchmark for complete package games- more so than Call of Duty 4. However, the simple combat is what's stopping me from giving this incredible game 10/10. The campaign is fantastic and can be played in co-op, the split-screen and game modes and settings available for you to change... still no other shooter has come close to offering so much in a shooter other than Halo Reach. The creativity here and the impact it had in 2007 are just unbelievable though. Expand

Anyone who thinks that Halo: Reach is not much different, should try going back and playing this. First off, the campaign mode is excellent. I'm not usually a fan of campaigns but the fact that ti's co-op meant I could play it with friends and it was a lo of fun with some very memorable places and some good variation as opposed to just the same constant shooting tactics. I really like Halo driving mechanics and I'm glad it makes used to them.

The Multiplayer has some beautiful levels that even in this day an age, look very nice in HD. However, weird things like being able to fall off anywhere and it not hurt you at all feel out of place within the game, and the jumping always feels a bit to anti-grav. Even now you can still find people online to play against easily enough, but I would strongly reccomend moving on to a new better FPS game. In summary, great co-op campaign and worth playing through, but don't get it for the multiplayer mode as it hasn't aged too well in that respect.

Idk I couldn’t follow, story isn’t halo strong suit, but what is its strong suit this time isjust how fun it actually is to play… this felt like a modern doom game… halo as a series still has its issues of just unfun driving sections and horrible progress indicators.. though they seem to have at least tried by sometimes putting markers on the screen for you… but not nearly enough, as the I have no idea what im supposed to be doing thought hit my mind a handful of times during my 6 hours run through this campaign.. but im happy to say the rest of this game is so good, especially compared to its predicessors and reach.. the weapons this time feel so hectic and fun to balance through.. for the first time in halo history I got to know the guns and feel like my loadout actually mattered, and things do ocassinally get repeettive, but the campaign felt much more varied, I loved the level design and splash of character and life in some of these levels.. and the focus on master chief.. no character switching here..

Sadly... Some things keep it from getting a 9. I wont give a 10 because NO game ever reaches perfection. But a 8 is fair because well...

The level Cortana is complete trash in the campaign. Probably the worst mission in any halo game. Maybe even worse than some of the crappiest halo 4/halo 5 missions. Also the parts where chief hallucinates cortana in pain are a real bummer. Just put that stuff in a skipable cut scene please. It sort of makes the game boring...

Some story elements don't make any sense just like in many halo games... For example why doesn't the gravemind kill the chief and arby when he has the chance? Stuff like that is just retarded...

Multiplayer maps are hit or miss in this game. Maps like guardian are good even though it feels like another lock out basically. But then you got totally crappy maps like high ground where if one team controls the high ground they will easily win. Unfair design... Or maps like isolation, snow bound, or epitaph which are just boring as heck in design and cater to camper trash. Maps like narrows are not so bad but still suffer from players being easily able to spawn kill people and lets get real here... It's just a bridge lol. Not the greatest or most original map... Just saying. Maps like construct often result in just lift camping... Sand trap had a cool idea of drivable bases but often idiots would just drive the base into a crappy spot and lose the match for everyone lol. Maps like valhalla are good but it's just a thin blood gultch with some man cannons... Not the worst maps ever but not the greatest either...

The way they handled playlists wasn't the best for fairness either. For example if you play 2v2 and get epitaph slayer... Blue team starts by invis and shot gun while red team starts by rockets and over shield... How the heck is that fair? Red team gets a clear advantage right off the bat! similar issues with 2v2 slayer on guardian and a few other maps. Poor attempts at creating fairness yo!

It's not a terrible game at all but flawed a tad bit. Still... Good game : )

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halo 3 is a game that is far from perfect, and unlike a bottle of wine, it does not get better with time; However, it does not get stale either. After almost 11 years, Halo 3 is still the same thrilling experience that is was all those years ago. While the graphics may not have aged well, and may not have been great in the first place, the gameplay, story, multiplayer, and sandbox settings far outweigh the negative of this masterpiece.

Story: While the story may not have been the enthralling tale of hope, heroism, and loss like the marketing portrayed it to be, it was not a bland story by any means. The basic story revolves around a green armored super soldier near the end of a 3 decade long war set in the 26th century, an alien who had been disgraced by a major failure, only to be betrayed by the ones who offered him redemption, and a grizzled veteran who knows what the ladies like. The game itself sees humanity desperately grasping for a foothold in a battle up a ninety degree wall, only for them to find an Ice pick and begin scaling the wall, until they finally crest the edge of the wall to gain a glimpse of the end of the war, only for it to be snatched away from them. Overall, the story gets an 8/10 for me, while not perfect, it is a great story with some incredible characters, and sadly the occasional "Dont forget about Cortana" moment.

Multiplayer: The multiplayer of Halo 3 is by far the best aspect of it, with weapons that act as powerful tools of destruction in their respective environments, while not overpowering the alternatives. The addition of equipment was still a great choice for varying gameplay, while being less intrusive than armor abilities and spartan abilities. Overall the multiplayer gets a 10/10.

Sandbox: Where do I begin? Lets start with the Human weapons, arguably the most boring in terms of design. The Assault Rifle is your standard automatic weapon, decent is close quarters, terrible against shields, but great on flesh. The Battle Rifle is your go to medium range weapon, the three round burst ensures quick and concise kills. The Sniper Rifle is exactly as it sounds, albeit bigger than expected. The Shotgun is a close quarters masterpiece, the only drawback being it's slow reload speed. The Rocket Launcher sees an downgrade, losing the ability to lock on to targets. The addition of detachable Machine gun turrets sees a powerful heavy weapon, that slows your Spartan or Elite considerably, resulting in a slow but powerful soldier, who is probably in need of some medical attention. Overall, without getting too far into the sandbox, it gets a 7/10. Due in part to the projectile management system, which priorities grenades and equipment over bullets.

To anyone saying that Halo 3 was over-hyped back in the day, you're not wrong. But it was the right kind of hype, the kind of hype that didn't leave too large of a gap that the game felt empty, but left just large enough of a gap that you are left wondering, what could have been.

Good finale to the original trilogy even if it is the weakest one. It felt like the arbiter was side-lined a bit and it's quite jarring that Truth and Miranda's voice actors were changed. Though despite my criticisms the game was still a really good finale to the trilogy.

Halo 3 was advertised as the ending of the Master Chief storyline. At the end of the previous title, the player is left wanting more, so the question is: Did Halo 3 deliver on that promise?
Bungie had everything going for them when starting Halo 3. There were no tight deadlines, the team knew the kind of story they wanted to tell and what gameplay worked and what didn't.

The gameplay kept betting on that power fantasy the series is known for, with all the weapons and gameplay additions from previous titles, present, yet again. Now, the player is also able to use different abilities that work as pickups, similar to weapons, that can create new gameplay scenarios, though I didn't see myself using them very often. Thanks to the story from Halo 2, in its sequel your main enemy are the Brutes, however, while menacing, they didn't feel like a big threat, since, when compared to their previous iteration, they're much weaker and their design isn't as interesting.
The soundtrack was, as always, a masterpiece and it knew the right moments to play. It felt like the culmination of every piece written before it.
The story, however, left me feeling slightly disappointed. The Halo 2 promise of an all out war on Earth was finally realized in this game, but it felt like some elements that made Halo 2's campaign extremely interesting were abandoned. The Arbiter, perhaps due to some of the fan backlash, took a back seat and felt like a cheap copy of the character we were introduced to in the previous game. The same thing happened to the previously established main antagonists, becoming nothing more than some Saturday morning cartoon villains. The level design was so good, however, that the story didn't bother me that much.

Overall, Halo 3 left me feeling slightly disappointed with its story and the expectations the previous game built, simply weren't met. However, the amazing gameplay and sandbox, mixed with the simple yet genius mission design and environments made me forget these issues. The ending was a beautiful way to send off the Master Chief until someone would need him again...

However in my opinion if Bungie really wanted to outdo themselves they would have put multiplayer on one disc and single player on another so they could give the campaign some actual DEPTH. So onto the actual review. In this installment of the Halo series, Master Chief has to finally finish the fight against the Covenant in a criminally short adventure of an average of 10 hours. The difficulty seems to be a bit... off. At the beginning some of the enemies destroyed me, but by the end one is supposed to constitute as a final boss battle was basically shooting a small, 5th grader with a gun with the power of a miniature tank. Of course I am focusing on the bad, at the moment so I'll go to some of the good. Halo 3 has good graphics, texture, very good voice acting, and moments of pure gold in the game (i.e. the Red vs. Blue reference) To finish off, Halo 3 is all right I suppose, I liked BioShock and the Orange Box more, but what the hell, right? If you just want a barely average, high speed single player action game and a fun multiplayer then Halo 3 is the game for you. If not, I suggest waiting for Mass Effect. Expand

Good game, short campaign... but 640p? It's down-rezzed, and that's disappointing. You'd think the flagship game for a company like this would at least be able to be run in full 720p at least. OK, let's be fair. Halo 3 is a very good game - but not a great one by any standards. Multiplayer actually just about saves it from being mediocre. It's not groundbreaking or innovative from a design perspective but it is undoubtedly fun - which is of course a minimum for a video game. But alas only up to a point. What is not fun is the repetitive indoor levels and the awful save system; would it hurt to have an autosave every 15 minutes or so? - Especially considering the games' already notorious instability and 'disc not readable' issues which can reduce a couple of hours of fun in the campaign to an absolutely rage-inducing waste of time! Well i am half way through the campaign and last night while playing i sat there and thought its good but not that good.... the multiplayer is pretty nice i like the upgrades they did on it compared to halo 2. Its close to the same game with twists that i think were needed esp for online. but good job overall microsoft.

Good game, but nothing really original in the series. There is no story at the beginning and the level design is slightly repetitive. However, combat is as polished as in previous titles. Too much hype, I guess.

Not really anything spectacular on the single player, and the Online not as fun as halo 2.

First, I've been with Halo from the beginning. The first release amazed, the second released was good with a dumb ending, but I had had a deep fear after seeing many unflattering screenshots that this release would not extend the state of the art and I'm sad to say its true. Aside from a few new weapons and vehicles and debatebly enhanced graphics the game breaks no new ground. First, I've been with Halo from the beginning. Aside from a few new weapons and vehicles and debatebly enhanced graphics the game breaks no new ground. Which is a shame for such an anticipated release with so much money behind it. Let me break it down. Graphics: 7 Not as good as Gears of War and not as good as Bioshock. The character models are average quality. For example, not as detailed as the players in Madden. Environment: 7 You'd expect to be able to interact with all kinds of things in the environment and blow stuff up. At least this is the mark of next-gen FPS today. Not so in Halo. You can knock stuff over, but you can't look inside of things, break things, use things, etc. Its a very superficial environment. Sound: 5 Oh boy. It's sad. I have a dolby 5.1 setup and the sound from Halo is very muffled and low-def. The weapon firing sounds or ok, but things like grenades sound like they are farther from you than they visually are. Little to no surround effects or ambient noise. A total lack of depth in the sound field. For the best 5.1 game sound, crisp and clean, check out Bioshock as the new standard (I'm not a fanboy, just using a real example of quality). Gameplay: 7 Same gameplay as before with a few new gadgets. No cover control (such as in GoW and Rainbow 6), no squad control, etc. Same, same, same. Story: 6 Getting a bit dated. The opening dialog is a bit perplexing. An utter lack of mind provoking elements in this story. Its a "story on rails". Not to mention, that for 3 versions of Halo the opening sequence is the cliche "the aliens have invaded our barracks" scenario. Tired! Get some new material. Overall: A very generous 7 Expand

Good game, but nowhere near the great game everyone makes it out to be! First of all it's too damn short. You only have to look at the superior graphics, such as the water effects,environments...etc and game play to relize, that it rules! It's new and fresh as opposed to old and stale....... R.I.P. I'd consider myself a 360 fanboy. Halo 3 is fun, but just feels like something is missing. I'm trying so hard to love this game. I'm not sure I can.

Nothing new here apart from a few weapons and vehicles. The multiplayer is what it's all about.

Halo 2 2 is OK. I've never been a campaign guy (I play the games to have fun with friends), so I judge all Halos on the multi-player, and that aspect of the game has not been improved. Yes, they added some new stuff in there but that alone can't carry the game (some of them are pointless too - like with the grenades). But different and better isn't the same. And am I the only one who misses the hit % stat? You can goof off the whole time and no one will be the wiser as to the 1,000 shots you wasted. All in all you could play or watch a game of Halo 2 and Halo 3 back-to-back and have a hard time knowing you saw 2 different games. I'm one of those who wanted to like it, but it disappoints. I do believe the name gives it 1 or 2 extra points in a lot of reviews. Expand

  1. It's the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.
  2. Halo 3 is the best Xbox 360 game to date. The single-player campaign and storyline are both very strong, but it's Forge and the Saved Films features that will likely go down in history as Bungie's crowning achievements. They've basically taken everything great about the series and improved upon it in every way, then added some amazing new features that we'll be using for years to come.

It's solid gameplay, immense replayability, online functionality and incredible production values will ensure its place in video game history, and it is, without a doubt, a satisfying and fulfilling close to the beloved trilogy[?].
